A BC Forest Service water bomber drops retardent on a grass fire on Cedar Road, east of Nanaimo Airport. Several fire departments, including Ladysmith and Chemainus, responded to the blaze, which qickly spread to 20 hectacres of hay fields and threatened a nearby forest. About a dozen homes in the area were evacuated, and the Ladysmith Emergency Centre was activated at the height of the incident, which is believed to have been caused by an overheated bearing or sparks from metal blades making contact with rocks during hay harvesting.
