City council declares ‘promise kept’ at completed paving project City of Cranbrook Mayor Lee Pratt and City staff stopped by to inspect the new pavement installed on Kootenay Street North on Friday as the City’s 2015 repaving program continues.

As such, Council earlier this year directed staff to identify roads that could be simply repaved, in order to maximize the amount of paving that could occur as part of the

2015 Capital Roads program.

“Both Council and I promised the citizens of Cranbrook we would do more roadwork this year and we are pleased to see this being accomplished,” says Mayor Lee Pratt.

The road work consists of removal of the

asphalt, reshaping of the road bed to ensure better water runoff and finally repaving the street. No underground infrastructure work (water lines, sewer lines, storm sewer system) is planned.

“We now have an Integrated Asset

Management Plan which identifies the condition of all roads and the infrastructure beneath them,” Mayor Pratt notes. “With this information we are able to make an educated assessment of the life expectancy of all of these assets. This will help us prioritize

which roads and water and sewer lines should be replaced first.

Council and staff are working on solutions to complete as much of this as we can each year while focusing on spending taxpayer dollars wisely.”

Gregarious Airshow ‘teaser’ heading to city this summer Gardener

Taking the heat

After through some amazing hot days of summer, an inspection of the garden can tell a story of how stressful hot weather can be. Drooping plants or dried up leaves during the day, shows how heat can take a toll on a plant. Fortunately, a good drink of water can fix the pouting plants, but it is a good reminder that plants are much like people - some can take the heat and prosper, while others need some extra TLC when it is hot.

Hot, drying sun and wind are a challenge and finding those heat and drought tolerant plants makes it easier to keep gardens looking lush, even at the height of summer. There are some plant characteristics that can indicate these plants might be happier in the hot sun than others.

Many drought-tolerant plants have silver or grey foliage, resulting from a coating of fine hairs on the surface of their leaves. These hairs reflect light and heat, and provide shade, thus reducing the amount of moisture lost to the atmosphere. Some examples of these are Artemesia-silver mound, silver brocade, or silver sage. The furry leaves of Lamb's Ear are also designed to keep plants cool and retain moisture.

Leaf size can also affect moisture loss. Many plants that have adapted to dry conditions have small or narrow leaves, in order to minimize the amount of exposed leaf surface. Thick leaves are another common adaptation. Fleshy, succulent plants, such as Sedum, are popular choices for dry locations. These are also a beautiful addition for fall colour.

Root systems have an effect on drought tolerance. Perennials with large, fleshy and fibrous roots or deep tap roots are able to reach down further into the soil to collect water and also store moisture for future use. Some of these favorites include peonies, rudbeckia, echinacea, Russian sage and salvia.

Most ornamental grasses are also drought tolerant once established. The ‘Karl Foerster’ is an alltime favourite, but we have more option to choose from. Blue Oat Grass and Elijah Blue Fescue are smaller accents that can make impacts in hard to water locations. Purple Fountain Grass is a dazzling heat tolerant annual the is very easy to maintain in a pot through the hottest weather.

It is important to remember that plants are drought tolerant only once established, not when you first plant them. Depending on the particular plant, it can be one to two years until they are fully established. In any case, it is always a good idea to amend your soil with some good compost and topsoil and add some bone meal when planting to give your plants the best chance of developing a good strong root system. Adding two to three inches of mulch around the plants can help retain moisture, prevent erosion and keep the soil cooler.

Watering deeply will also encourage strong root development. Shallow watering, on the other hand, can be a factor in developing shallow roots.

Plants will naturally reach for wherever the water is. If we water frequently and shallowly, roots do not have to reach down deep. Instead they will stay within the top six inches of the soil, making them more susceptible to drought. Watering deeply will encourage roots to grow down, sometimes 12 to 18 inches, giving the plant more moisture and cooler soil.

A drip irrigation system can help you deliver the proper amount of water directly to the roots.

Always group plants in your garden, according to their watering needs. Do not mix plants with high and low watering needs in the same planting area.

With a little bit of planning and preparation, your garden will be set for whatever summer may throw at it.

Numerous local businesses participated leading up to the event,

completing the challenge of filling a DQ cup up with donations.

The total donations from the DQ cups and Blizzard sales reached $1,703! The money raised will help support East Kootenay families with children in extraordinary medical need.

B.C. Views: Still the Wild West for elections

by Tom Fletcher The man behind “HarperPAC” says it lived and died in a few days to make a point about thirdparty advertising in Canadian politics.

When it launched, I wondered why he would choose such a deliberately provocative name. No, not “Harper,” but the acronym for “Political Action Committee,” which has come to symbolize the financial excesses of U.S. politics.

HarperPAC ran one

radio ad, accusing Liberal leader Justin Trudeau of blaming voters for his declining popularity, and suggesting that Trudeau’s “months of mistakes” are a likelier cause.

No kidding.

HarperPAC spokesman Stephen Taylor, who like Stephen Harper before him has worked for the National Citizens’ Coalition, announced the end of the project last week.

“We have contributed to a new discussion about political financing in a fixed election era that is critical to our democracy,” Taylor said. “We note that this discussion only occurred once a right-wing analog of the left’s PAC-style efforts emerged on the scene.”

Indeed, it was when HarperPAC emerged that muttering began about “dark money” in Canadian politics. Unifor, AntiConservative front LeadNow and the many faces of the Tides Foundation somehow failed to ignite much discussion in the Canadian media.

Taylor launched the bid in response to the emergence of “Engage Canada,” a union-financed action committee that he said was part of a broader effort by the left to oust the Conservatives. Engage Canada portrays itself as a brave alternative to shadowy rightwing groups such as Working Canadians, which has also run pro-Conservative ads.

Engage Canada’s latest ad plays on the union movement’s cherished “inequality” theme, selecting

statistics to portray the wealthy as making out far better than the rest of us in Harper’s Canada. (The notion that “inequality” can and should be fixed by ever-higher taxes on “the rich” staggers on, zombie-like, as if capitalism was the cause of poverty.)

Two recent developments have led to all this. Scheduled elections every four years have finally taken effect at the federal level, after a series of minority governments. And courts have repeatedly struck down efforts to restrict third-party spending in the so-called “precampaign” period as an unwarranted restriction on free speech.

The B.C. Liberal government tried and failed several times to restrict third party spending, largely in response to the million-dollar tirades of

the teachers’ union.

Former attorney general Wally Oppal used to warn about American-style influence by wealthy interest groups targeting scheduled elections.

Their strategy was not so much to keep corporate money out of B.C. politics as to keep it flowing through the B.C. Liberal Party.

This spring the B.C. Liberal majority passed Bill 20, the Election Amendment Act. Not only did this recognize the freedom of outsiders to weigh in on elections, it also did away with precampaign restrictions on registered political parties and candidates.

NDP MLA Leonard Krog warned that this sets the stage for “some mad Wild West show,” with politicians so desperate to raise money they start looking for the B.C.

The big difference between the pre-campaign ads for this fall’s federal election and the next provincial vote in 2017 is that corporate and union donations to parties and candidates have been eliminated at the federal level. That means more money available for thirdparty campaigns, but it seems to be fairly well distributed between the two sides, the Conservatives and everybody else.

Here in the Wild West, nothing’s going to change as long as the B.C. Liberals are in the saddle.

Communities in the area receive grants Communities in the riding of Kootenay East have received $1,296,364 as part of almost $75.2 million being invested into communities across B.C. to meet local needs including more policing, new equipment, increased community safety initiatives, infrastructure and service delivery priorities.

• Cranbrook has received traffic fine revenue of $171,631 and a Small Community grant of $119,360.

• Fernie has received a Small Community grant of $322,328.

• Elkford has received a Small Community grant of $263,100.

• Sparwood has received a Small Community grant of $303,730.

• The Regional District of East Kootenay has received a Regional District grant of $116,215.

With the temperatures forecast to be in the mid to high 30’s for at least the next week, it is extremely important that pets are not left inside vehicles for any reason.

If you see a dog left in a vehicle, please contact the BC SPCA hotline at 1-855622-7722. Although the SPCA does not have the authority to remove pets from vehicles, they will attend the scene and contact the RCMP if the dog is in critical distress. The RCMP is the only body who can remove pets from vehicles.

1. The corporate ratification process is complete with Pacific NorthWest LNG and their member companies, including a joint venture largely backed by Malaysian state energy-giant Petronas for the creation of a liquefied natural gas plant near Prince Rupert.

2. The government is calling back the legislature on July 13th to ratify the projectdevelopment agreement.

2015 Dodge Journey If minivans aren’t your thing and sedans lack sufficient cargo space, the Dodge Journey might be your way to travel. This midsized wagon has the interior space that many families require, but at a price that won’t blow up their budgets.

The Journey has been around since the 2009 model year, but it underwent a significant leap forward two years later with an updated interior and a new V6 engine option.

The exterior also received a modest refresh (new hood grille, bumper and lights), but the stylists at Dodge still managed to make the already attractive Journey a bit more appealing. All this was accomplished without increasing the vehicle’s list price to any great degree.

As with other car-based tall wagons (a.k.a. crossovers), the Journey is built on a sedan platform. In this case the previous Chrysler 200 (neé Sebring) and retired Dodge Avenger supplied the basic structure, but with an additional 10 centimetres added between the front and rear wheels.

The stretch means more rear-seat legroom and creates a cavernous stowage area, especially with the reclining second-row and optional third-row seats folded completely flat (unlike similar vehicles where the rear seat backs stick up a bit when folded). Ordering the optional fold-flat front passenger seat (with stowage space under the flip-up cushion) allows you to load extra-long items such as lumber and skis.

Beneath the floor just behind the front seats are two small removable bins that are useful for storing such personal items as electronics or spare shoes.

The rest of the cabin comes across as a place of high style, in particular the soft-touch (nonplasticky) dashboard with prominent touch-display controls, vehicle info screen between the round gauge pods and glove-friendly switches and dials.

Starting your Journey involves engaging one of two available powerplants. Base models come with a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 173 horsepower and 166 pound-feet of

torque. That’s not a lot for the 1,730-kilogram Journey, especially when overtaking slower traffic or transporting a heavy load of passengers and/or gear. For those duties, the optional 3.6-litre V6 is a much better choice. It makes 283 horsepower and 260 poundfeet of torque. As well, the 2.4’s fuel rating of 12.7 l/100 km in

the city and 9.1 on the highway is only a touch better than the V6’s 14.2/9.4 numbers.

A four-speed automatic transmission (yes, they still make those) handles the gear-shifting chores for the four-cylinder, while a six-speed automatic mates exclusively to the V6.

You’ll definitely need to order

the V6 when selecting the extracost all-wheel-drive. This ondemand system transfers torque to the rear wheels only when the fronts begin to slip, or when cornering at speeds above 40 kmh. At speeds above 85 km-h on straight, dry surfaces, the AWD remains essentially dormant in the interests of fuel economy.

The base Journey Canada Value Package model requires an outlay of $23,200 (including destination charges). That won’t get you everything your heart desires, but it does include dual-zone air conditioning, pushbutton start and the usual power-controlled accessories.

Depending on how you count them, there are about nine different trims in total, which obviously allows for a great deal of content and budgetary choices.

New for 2015, however, the mid-range Crossroad mimics much of the sporty R/T’s content with its blacked-out grille (but with unique platinum chrome front and side trim) and leather seat covers. However the Crossroad’s softer touring suspension means that it lacks the R/T’s ride control as well as that model’s standard all-wheel-drive.

Along with the third-row seat, available extras include a power sunroof, backup camera, rearseat video screen and navigation and premium sound systems.

Admittedly, the Journey is becoming a bit long in the tooth and a second-generation model can’t be too far off. But as an attractive, serviceable and affordable vehicle, the Journey makes an ideal travel companion.

Safety Tip:

Like other Dodge models, the interior of the Journey has a lot of roundness to the shapes as well as soft-touch materials. The dash layout is super functional. Leather, as shown here, is of course optional.

They made us feel comfortable in this time of stress and were very accommodating to the large group that had assembled.

TWI, with help from 4-H members and friends in the community outdid themselves with a lovely luncheon that was greatly appreciated by the family and everyone who enjoyed the delicious feast.

Log Quality Supervisor The Gorman Group of Companies (GGoC) has an immediate fulltime position within the Woodlands Department for a Log Quality Supervisor. Things to See & Do Hugs: To the Canadian Cancer Society for making Relay For Life an amazing event with it’s new date, time and location.

Hugs: To the marshall at Mission Hills Golf club: Don. He is the best. During Ladies night he is always helpful and friendly. He brings us (the ladies from Ta Ta Creek) refreshing drinks when it is hot. Thanks!

Slugs: To all realtors that do the following: when a realtor has a listing but another realtor or agency sells that house and the listing agent puts a sold sign on it to make people think that they sold it. Why isn’t the agent name that sold it name put on it. It only makes sense.

Hugs: Special hug to Country Hardwood Floors who came into our mothers house to evaluate her hardwood floors. The floors were a total mess from another company. They fixed the floors and the total workmanship was

more than we expected. Thanks again Hugs: To Bev from Marysville, who rescued my husband & myself on a hot afternoon from the side of the road between Kimberley & Marysville. Our car had broken down. She asked if she could help & she did. She drove us to Signal Collision where the kind people let us wait while arrangements were made to tow our vehicle.

Slugs: To whoever put top closed pipes over gopher holes at Purcell Park suffocating gophers as they pushed out of the holes. What goes around comes around buddy.

Hugs: To those alert folk who have the imaginings that “fragile rock” could become a reality.

Slugs to those negative that would damage the site without giving it a chance.

Cranbrook Telus who made my friends life and mine incredibly better today. By going above, beyond and out of her way, she got a lady in Joseph Creek connected to the outside world with a cell phone, when it looked like it couldn’t happen.

Slugs: To the taxi driver who, instead of driving my elderly mother directly to her destination, took a longer route to drive up the fare. It cost her $3.00 more than it did a couple of months ago to the same destination by the same taxi company. After booking the taxi early both times, she had to phone back each time because the taxi didn’t show up on time.

The taxi also reeked of smoke.

To the second driver of the same taxi company, shame on you for taking advantage of an elderly lady!
