Salmon Arm would not be the place we love today, if it were not for the unselfish volunteers that make our community a better place to live, work and play.

These individuals strive to create a better community by contributing countless hours of volunteer work, sometimes overcoming insurmountable obstacles and ask nothing in return. These people are true community leaders and can be found on our sports fields, in our care centres, at our food banks and at many of our local events that take place throughout our community. Many of these individuals have families of their own but still find the time to make a difference by sharing their empathy, enthusiasm, inspiration and energy.

The Community Leader Awards were created to

identify and honour the commitment and efforts that are essential to maintaining this growing community. Some of the stories you’ll read will tug at your heartstrings, others will bring a smile to your face. I guarantee every one of you will feel grateful that we have a dedicated group of community volunteers! As you read through this publication I am hopeful that you will feel inspired and be encouraged to ask yourself, “What more could I do?”

TOP HONOUR: Kari Wilkinson

with the launch of a school lunch program for children in need throughout the Shuswap area.

Wilkinson recently became the new School District 83 DPAC president and she also volunteers with the Parent Advisory Committee

HONOURABLE MENTION:

Karen Bubola

Karen Bubola grew up in the Carlin area and her parents gave her a strong example of community volunteerism.

She was in 4-H and says this all helped to mold her.

Now, as manager of the Shuswap Day Care Society, Karen Bubola goes above and beyond her daily job to make a real difference in children’s lives. She makes the centre feel like a second home and all the children enrolled there feel like they’re part of a family.

She organizes fundraisers that range from raffles and pub nights to Shuswap Pie Company sales and writing grant applications.

She has served 10 years as a member of the Early Childhood Development Committee and is also a member Okanagan College Advisory Committee - ECD program.

She has been chair of the Salmon Arm Children’s Festival Society for the past six years and the Carlin Community Association knows they can count on her to help out at their events. Bubola is also a parent volunteer for Salmon Arm Guides and also coaches soccer.

What others call going ‘above and beyond’ she calls “giving it that little extra push.” It’s just about giving back, she says, because that’s what community is.

“It just comes from the heart. It’s something ingrained. It’s important in some way or another to give back.”

at South Broadview. She does all the buying of the food for the monthly hot lunches through Askew’s and other businesses, and then helps to prepare and serve it.

Besides all this she also served on the board for the proposed Shuswap Community Arts Centre and has helped create a website for Just for Kicks Dance Studio. In the winter she is a volunteer ‘Jack Rabbit’ coach at Larch Hills.

Wilkinson says she’s fortunate enough to own her own business, which gives her the flexibility to take part in so many worthwhile organizations. Above all, she likes volunteering for events that benefit children.

“A lot of the things I’m doing are for the kids. As budgets get tighter and tighter you have to have a volunteer work force to keep our community vibrant. I love our lifestyle with the music, culture and sports. It’s a great place to live and we’re envied by lots of other communities.”

HONOURABLE MENTION:

Deborah Chapman

Deborah Chapman is the curator at R.J. Haney Heritage Village and Museum but she puts hours of volunteer time over and above her job requirements.

She has worked hard to enhance Haney Village through her connection with groups such as the vintage car clubs, local quilters groups, musicians, and many local service clubs.

Chapman is an important contributing member of two other groups that work closely with the museum, the Community Heritage Commission and the Salmon Arm branch of the Okanagan Historical Society.

She has helped co-ordinate joint projects of these groups such as the popular Tea and Tour of heritage buildings, and the development of the Heritage Registry of significant buildings, roads, and public places.

She also helped with the updating and planned reprinting of the Denis Marshall book, Salmon Arm’s Historic Routes and the People Behind the Names.

Chapman’s love of local history has made her an invaluable resource to the community. Anyone who has asked her a question about a local person, building, or event knows the lengths she will go to find an answer, but she doesn’t call this going above and beyond.

“I love my work, so it is easy to help researchers try to find the answers their questions. It is just what I do. Sometimes I am successful and sometimes, because there are no answers, I’m not. That’s the job of a community archivist.”

Above & Beyond

Kari Wilkinson is passionate about Salmon Arm and many organizations have benefitted from her enthusiasm and dedication since she moved here in 1996.

She was a board member and one of the main volunteers for the Shuswap Day Care Society for nine years and she worked tirelessly at fundraising projects.

She has been a board member and core volunteer for the Salmon Arm Children’s Festival for the past several years. Wilkinson works throughout the year to coordinate the event, helps with the setup and takedown, as well as volunteering during the day-long festival.

Wilkinson has been a Rotarian for several years. She recently won the prestigious Paul Harris award, which is given to only a select few. She provides her support and expertise in their numerous fundraising projects. She was instrumental in the partnership between the Salmon Arm Rotary Club and Askew’s Foods

Coaching, he says, is not just about understanding the game, it’s about understanding people.

“You’ve got 15 different personalities on the team and what motivates one doesn’t

motivate the other. You have to be organized, structured, levelheaded and remember why we’re here, to have fun.”

He expects 100 per cent from his players whether they’re playing a game or dry-land training. But coaching isn’t just about the game, it’s training his players to be the best they can be off the ice as well.

“I really think that the most important part is life skills - respect in sport, for teammates, the opposition, how you handle yourself in the dressing room - your character. We’re leaders and mentors more about life than anything.”

HONOURABLE MENTION: Mark Sandau play in a sportsmanlike and dedicated manner,” says Roy Sakaki, Administrator of Salmon Arm Minor Hockey Association.

This year his team competed for first place throughout the year and captured first place at the Chilliwack Midget Recreation tournament.

Sandau says the biggest pay off for him as a coach is watching the kids improve, coming together as a team and working hard to win.

Off the ice, he says the biggest payoff is hearing from his former players.

“When they see me and come over to shake my hand. They don’t call me Mark - they still call me coach.”

His sons are now young adults, but when they were small Mark Sandau decided the best way to keep them on the straight and narrow as they grew up was to keep them busy with sports and to “get in the trenches with them.”

That decision has made him a long-standing and respected coach in Salmon Arm Minor Hockey.

Throughout the years Sandau has coached at all levels of recreation hockey including Midgets for the past six years. For a couple of years he was assistant coach and trainer of a Bantam team and head coach and trainer for a Midget team at the same time.

For years all his weekends and many weeknights have been spent at the arena as he is personally motivated to help his players improve their skills and become the best they can be.

“Mark has great control of his teams, motivates them and encourages them to

For over a decade Mark Bannister’s coaching style has been a perfect example of Salmon Arm Minor Hockey Association’s mission statement, promoting respect, sportsmanship, and skill development in players of all levels and working with parents to ensure all players have a positive hockey experience in a safe environment.

Salmon Arm Minor Hockey Association Administrator Roy Sakaki says the association is fortunate to have a coach with such heart and dedication, and a positive outlook.

“He is truly an excellent role model for players, parents, and coaches.”

This past year Bannister was head coach of the Salmon Arm Midget Tier 3 team.

“His players were most respectful of his coaching dedication and performed at a consistent level, thanks to Mark’s leadership,” says Sakaki.

Bannister says it’s the players who inspire and motivate him.

“They’re a lot of fun and equally passionate,

HONOURABLE MENTION:

Tracey Kutchker

The Community Foundation of Canada recently created an initiative to measure the quality of life in Canadian communities called Vital Signs. The Salmon Arm results showed Arts and Culture were the qualities that meant the most to local residents. Tracey Kutchker, Executive Director of the Shuswap Arts Centre and curator of the Art Gallery, can take great credit for that.

Kutchker believes strongly that making art accessible and inclusive is truly a vital sign of the community. She has created 17 different projects for the arts centre that have brought people of all ages into the gallery and taken art out to the public including Family Saturdays where parents with children aged 2-12 come to make art together, art camps for teens, and a program called Shu-Go that makes tickets to arts and cultural events very reasonable for teens.

Kutchker also started a Coffee Break afternoon each month for people who want to experience the current show and discuss it while enjoying cookies and coffee.

Under Kutchker’s direction the Arts Centre outreach in the community has become very popular and an integral part of Salmon Arm including the Culture Crawl which matches businesses with artists to display their work, and WOW, Wednesday on the Wharf.

Kutchker was also the leading force behind the band shell mural in the Ross Street parking lot. She spent five years fundraising for it and designed this beautiful piece of art which eventually included more than 100 people who took part in putting together.

Kutchker says community art means a lot to her because it’s fundamental for building community.

“That’s my passion- where the public can participate while they’re doing something creative. Our community identity and experience is everyone. It’s a way to stay connected.”

Wright has represented Canada on the ParaDressage world stage on several occasions, and as a result, helped the budding Para-Equestrian program become more prominent on the national stage.

Before he retired from his teaching job, Wright sponsored the bowling team, taking them all the way to provincials. Many people in the area owe their cross country ski skills to him, as he helped instruct all people of all ages at Larch Hills.

Wright is quick to answer why he offers so many hours of his time to the community.

“I came across this quote: ‘Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. You vote in elections every few years but when you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in.’”

HONOURABLE MENTION:

Bert Revel

The Salmon Arm Fair has been going for over a century and Bert Revel has volunteered for almost half that time. He started out as a convener then became the main convener of the school section for about 25 years before becoming the fruits and vegetable convener for another 25 years. Now he fulfills the role of greeter/ ambassador for the fair.

He doesn’t take much credit for all these years of volunteering because he gets as much out of it as he gives.

“I’m a small town guy. I love seeing people and having a good long chat. I love the fair.”

He also loves singing and has been involved with the Shuswap Singers and Shuswap Men’s Chorus since the beginning and is now involved with the 5th Avenue Seniors Singing Group.

He has also been dedicated in his volunteering for the Heart and Stroke association for over 35 years and for over 26 years has been a controller/ encourager at the Reino Keski Salmi Loppet.

He also took up baking pies to help raise money for R.J. Haney Heritage Village & Museum. His award-winning pies have sold for up to $2,000. He says he didn’t learn to bake from his parents, he did it all on his own.

“I followed the recipe on the back of the Tenderflake box.” He is happy to share another secret to making award winning apple pies: “Do not put in cinnamon - then it’s cinnamon pie.”

As to volunteering, he says he does it to make Salmon Arm a better place.

“If you don’t help people, you don’t have community, it’s just a place to live.”

Community Builder

Phil Wright is a welcome and familiar sight around the fair grounds. He is president of the Salmon Arm and Shuswap Agricultural Association and is always willing to lend a hand.

He helps organize the fair grounds for the annual fall fair and Roots & Blues, and the SASCU Indoor Memorial Arena Sports Complex for events such as 4-H rallies, pony club, soccer, and archery.

For years Wright was in charge of organizing the popular fall fair parade. Wright comes by his love of the fall fair honestly. As a boy growing up in Salmon Arm Wright was active in his 4-H Potato Club.He picked the potato club over the dairy club because it was his job to clean the chicken coop and he didn’t want to spend any more time with them.

“With the potatoes all you had to do was weed them.”

I found meaningful volunteer work at the CHMA, the Salvation Army and the other agencies in town.”

Courage

In 1989 Garry Hall was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. He went through some horrible years that led to a family break down and he went through many mental health crises until his medications were finally figured out and everything was under control.

When he moved to Salmon Arm 10 years later he became part of the community right away, driving and sorting at the Salvation Army Food Bank. For many years he volunteered one day a week at the Cancer Society office and helped out at the Relay for Life.

During his early years here he was also an active volunteer at Pioneer Lodge, Roots & Blues, and the Trail Alliance.

In 2003 he took the Canadian Mental Health Association (CHMA) Peer Support Training course. He was a committed mentor but didn’t think he could organize or be a leader. Two years later Hall went out of his comfort zone by applying for the Peer Support Coordinator’s volunteer position and was the successful candidate.

HONOURABLE MENTION: Gord Bose Gord Bose came to Shuswap Search and Rescue five years ago from another SAR group in the Lower Mainland.

“What was their loss quickly became our gain and a huge benefit to the Shuswap as a whole,” says President of Shuswap Search and Rescue Luke Gubbels.

“Gord brings a professionalism and a skill set to the team that has spread to the rest of the group and he has single-handedly made us better prepared to respond to emergencies.”

Bose is the Ropes Team Leader and is certified in advanced rope rescue.

“This is a paramount skill as the ropes team is often put into service on most of our calls,” says Gubbels.

He also does a lot of inside work for Shuswap Search and Rescue. He is cur-

rently vice president of the society and he spends countless hours keeping track of multiple accounts that are necessary for the team to function.

“Among other things Gord has taken the lead on our grant applications and spends many hours on understanding the details of these proposals,” says Gubbels.

John Schutt, Shuswap SAR Media Relations, says the team appreciates Bose’s enthusiasm for whatever task needs doing.

“He has big time energy. He’s a very resourceful and energetic person and he focuses on the job at hand. If stuff needs to get done, he gets it done.”

Emergency Service

Call it extreme volunteerism. For the past 11 years Tara Stanley has been a member of Shuswap Search and Rescue and during that time she has responded to about 100 calls going out in all kinds of weather and conditions.

When Stanley began volunteering over a decade ago, she went totally out of her comfort zone. She wasn’t even an ‘outdoorsy’ person.

“I never would have pictured myself tramping through the bush - not nice trails - right through the bush and in the mud.”

Stanley is now a Search Manager, a rope team member and has Track Aware training.

Her team members appreciate her organizational skills, her encouragement, kindness, and dedication. She has earned the respect of her team, as well as other agencies because she always gets the job done efficiently. Those who work with Stanley know she leads by example and is never afraid to get her boots dirty.

She isn’t used to taking credit for herself,

Ayotte is currently the Volunteer Ecological Warden for the Mara Meadows Ecological Reserve and was mentored in this role

by John Coffee. He explains that BC Parks doesn’t fund all the ecological areas they preserve so those areas are managed through volunteers.

“Each reserve has a steward to take care of it, they’re called a volunteer warden. Mara Meadows almost boarders our property and it’s a real neat and magical place. John Coffee was an important mentor in my life.

Small Acts Transform the World

He was a teacher at Jackson and he was the warden at Mara Meadows when we moved here. He died three years ago from cancer and it’s a sad loss. He passed that torch on to me and I’m proud to fill his shoes.”

He was also a founding member of the Shuswap Environmental Action Society and the Shuswap Outdoor Learning Foundation.

He began the Shuswap Outdoor Learning Foundation with two elementary teachers, and now a lot more people are involved.

“We started putting on kids camps two years ago. A bunch of us felt there was a need to get kids outside more, in the bush.

They need bush time. If we miss a generation of kids who just don’t know this place, they will be bringing up kids without this connection. We want to make that connection. We recognize it was our childhood that made us who we are today. I credit my folks for getting me off on that tangent.”

Environmental Leader

The Ayotte moved to Salmon Arm from Ontario in 1980. Jeremy Ayotte was nineyears-old and he was already a committed outdoor enthusiast.

“When we were kids my parents bought an island in a remote area of Ontario. We spent our whole summers at Middle Island.

When we moved to Salmon Arm we lived on a small farm and cultivated the same values. It’s always been in the family, a stewardship kind of value.”

After high school Ayotte went to the University of Victoria where he got a biology degree, then he went on to the University of Northern BC for a masters in wildlife biology. But Ayotte says not all his learning came from books. He appreciates the balance between environmental stewardship and economic drivers.

“I picked up a lot of stuff outside of school. Before going back for my masters degree, I went and worked for a horse logger.

Instead of taking a strong stance against logging, I went and worked there. It was a good underlying education. The province is built on logging, it is sustainable, there is just a better way of doing it.”

He says he tells them to think of the play-

ers on the field as their younger brothers and sisters and to treat them the same way.

Last year Owens helped out at the first Twin Anchors Houseboats Shore N’ Shine Soccer Cup in July, not only mentoring but acting in one game as an assistant referee. He was, at the time, 82 years old.

“That was the last time I got involved in running a line. There was a young girl who had three or four games to do so I stepped in to give her a break. They were 15-year-old boys and they sure gave me a run.”

HONOURABLE MENTION: Julia Body

“I have a passion for theatre. It helps people discover things about themselves and allows them to come out of themselves, particularly young people,” says Julia Body.

Body says she feels a real satisfaction and excitement when she sees young people get out of their comfort zone and earn that personal satisfaction knowing they can do it.

It is her dedication as she coaches people to improve their acting skills that makes her an inspirational mentor.

Body has taught drama at various schools throughout the school district and has been an active member of Shuswap Theatre for 23 years. She has shown leadership in various ways, inspiring people to see possibilities and take risks.

“Theatre isn’t reality but it mirrors reality. It lets you think about issues. It’s an exploration of the human experience. It’s

important for young people to be able to do that in a safe and non-threatening environment, where it is controlled.”

Two years ago when Body directed the popular musical, Little Shop of Horrors, she included and mentored many young people in the cast and crew including a 17-yearold musical director. Her students appreciate the way Body always treats them with patience and respect as she generously gives of her time, in and out of class.

Under Body’s mentorship, young people have been inspired to take part in theatre and some have gone on to take drama at a post secondary level.

For Body, the reward is simple, she likes seeing what theatre can do for people.

“Teenage years are hard and when they get to do a play and people are applauding it makes them feel valuable and special, and that’s a nice thing. Something turns on in

Ralph Owens has been an important part of the Salmon Arm soccer scene for nearly 50 years. When he and his wife, Norma, and their children moved here from England in 1966 he brought his love of the game with him.

“I started playing as a kid in England. I played club soccer.”

He played on a men’s team but his involvement didn’t stop there. He became a strong supporter of soccer in Salmon Arm over the years in various capacities, as a referee, coach, and now as a referee mentor.

He enjoys helping young people learn how to officiate a game. He assists the youth referees by volunteering his time during the spring soccer season, visiting the fields as a referee mentor every Saturday from midApril to the third week of June. His vast knowledge of the game and rules qualify him as an outstanding mentor. He volunteers his time with a great eye for the game and a sense of humour, endearing him to

them - they shine when they get to be on the stage.”

CMHA serves. She is genuine and enthusiastic in all her efforts, whether it is leading a strategic board meeting or helping serve meals at the annual Christmas party.

Braby says she feels passionate about CMHA because it affects so many people.

“It’s not just the people struggling themselves, it’s their family and friends too. It has a very broad impact.”

Getting housing for people who need help is one of the most rewarding experiences, she says, because it is a basic human need, and serving meals at the Christmas dinner is the fun part.

“It’s a wonderful tradition, the board helps out with bringing the food and we socialize.

It varies from year to year but we’ve served up to a 150 meals. It’s nice to meet the family and friends of the people we work with.”

Ron Hooper has been involved with Rotary for over a decade and has been an incredible asset to the Daybreak Rotary Club since moving to Salmon Arm in 2010.

“I joined Rotary in 2003 in Jasper without full knowledge of what Rotary was about.

When I started going to the meetings I saw it really was a great opportunity to become involved in projects related to the community and youth.”

He was inspired by the work Rotarians did on the local level and by their international projects with world-wide benefits.

“What a wonderful opportunity to participate in an audacious project to eradicate polio with every club contributing to that goal. It was a phenomenal opportunity.”

Hooper is proud to part of an organization that is has an outstanding reputation on the international stage.

“There are unfortunate stories about organizations where a large portion of donations goes to administrative overhead. Rotary has a reputation as spending money wisely and a limited amount of overhead.”

For the past five years Hooper has been volunteering where he could and has held a number of positions in the club, including co-chair and chairman of club services, president for 2013/14 and now serves on the executive as pastpresident. Hooper is currently chair of the Community and Youth Services Committee and has also been involved in a number of training projects at the District level.

“Rotary is a tremendous opportunity to become involved with like-minded people. It’s a lot more than just writing cheques, it’s actually about doing things and sometimes in pretty humble ways, like setting up and taking down chairs.”

When Dennis Hill retired nine years ago, he decided he needed something to do.

“One of my neighbours was involved in Search and Rescue and I thought, ‘That kind of sounds interesting.’”

That chance conversation has been a blessing for Shuswap Search and Rescue as Hill has been a dedicated volunteer ever since, taking on some of the not-so-popular tasks. As treasurer he spends many hours every month tracking and balancing the income statements.

He keeps track of the equipment that needs to be purchased, repaired, amortized, and maintained. He makes sure there are funds to maintain the equipment, pay the lease and bills and makes sure volunteers get reimbursed when needed. He also spends hours working on grant applications. It’s not the most glamour job, but it is vital for the continued success of the organization.

What the Shuswap Search and Rescue team would tell you they really appreciate about Hill is that he does his job ‘with an accuracy and dedication that is unmatched.’

Now 76, Hill doesn’t do as much tramping through the back country on searches, but he still gets out there and does his part.

“I’m not as energetic as I used to be. I take on the role of communication in the command centre and let the younger guys run up and down the hills.”

Those who know Debbie Braby’s dedication and passion at Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) call her a ‘volunteer champion.’

During her tenure on the CMHA Board for the past nine years, Braby has held several positions and is currently the board chair. Her assistance was integral to the organization as it became a regional entity to serve the entire Shuswap and Revelstoke region.

She took an active lead developing housing services in the community. She has a talent for strategic leadership on these initiatives, and, at the same time, builds connections throughout the community.

Braby believes in the resiliency, respect, and recovery at the grassroots level to ensure services are delivered and match the needs of the individual being served. Because of her

TOP HONOUR: George Eveneshen down.

Eveneshen was president of the United Church Men’s Club for nine years and has helped with everything from helping seniors move, to odd jobs and maintenance, and helping in the kitchen.

He joined the Salmon Arm Daybreak Rotary Club and has accumulated 43 continuous years with the service club. He is a five time Paul Harris Fellow which means he personally donated $5,000 US to the Rotary Foundation which funds everything from cleft palette surgery to eradicating Polio.

Helping fight this disease means a lot to Eveneshen.

“I have a friend with Polio in Burns Lake. I thought we should do something for this, I never give up on that one.”

He helps with the food banks if people are donating food and cannot deliver it. He picks up donations from the local farmers markets twice a week.

When Daybreak Rotary decided to grow food

to help out local organizations, Eveneshen was right in there, taking a lead.

He helps plant, weed, water, harvest, clean and deliver beets, potatoes, carrots, beans, and cabbage.

“Last year we donated over 3000 lbs. of vegetables to Second Harvest, the Women’s Shelter, and the Salvation Army food bank.”

Eveneshen says he shocked to receive this nomination, but mostly he was relieved, he thought he was being asked to take on a little more.

“I thought, oh no, here goes another garden.”

Throughout the years Mary Scheidegger has been a keen volunteer, beginning with whatever activities her children were involved.

“I was the PAC (Parent Advisory Council) mom, the hockey tournament mom, the soccer mom but as my kids got I older I wanted to find something that was more than just being the mom-volunteer.”

In 2006 she joined the Daybreak Rotary Club. She liked their local and international focus and their dedication to youth.

Scheidegger is also passionate about promoting literacy at all ages and as the ‘Booklady’ she founded and ran the successful Adopt a Book program for over a decade. This is a campaign that raises funds to buy books for children and youth who witness abuse, or who are at risk. She is also a member of the Literacy Alliance of the Shuswap Society. She has also volunteered with the Roots & Blues and on special projects for the Girl Guides.

She was involved with Shuswap Women in Business since its inception. In 2009 Scheidegger was named Shuswap Woman of the Year, in recognition of her contributions to the community and her professional success.

When mental illness came into the lives of the Scheidegger family, Mary Scheidegger got in touch with Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA).

A friend suggested that she volunteer for the CMHA Board, Shuswap/Revelstoke branch.

In 2013 she was elected to the Board and presently holds the position of secretary.

Scheidegger says it’s a wonderful honour to be nominated but at the same time says volunteering isn’t an accomplishment as much as it is a way of life.

“It’s hard to make sense of a nomination like this, celebrating something I do.

It’s just what a person does. I don’t know how not to do it.”

When Eugene Casavant retired from his job as Administrator of Shuswap Lake General Hospital in 1998 he went right back to work as a volunteer with the Shuswap Hospital Foundation, an organization he helped establish in 1986.

Casavant volunteered as Managing Director of the Shuswap Hospital Foundation and spent 15 years shepherding the foundation in its goal of improving local health care.

“I think government and the structure that supports health care has its limitations. There is never enough money to go around. If you want to have a hospital with the latest technology, and you have a hospital our size, it isn’t available through the government mechanism, you have to go to the people.”

Casavant isn’t on the Board any more but he is still involved and goes to the office ‘to give a hand now and then.’

He was also involved in Rotary for over 45 years.

“It’s powerful in helping the community and helping people internationally. I like to give back to the world.”

Casavant has also been an active member of the Knights of Columbus for 54 years and has been involved in Community Futures Shuswap and in the planning of the downtown college campus.

“I feel strongly that we need to support it, it’s a way to provide training to the young people and a way for them to stay in our community.”

Casavant says he volunteers not only for the good of the community but because everyone is called to help those in need, and that’s how he would like to be remembered. “‘Whatsoever you did for the least of Mine..’ my epitaph should read something like that.”

There is a trail in Burns Lake named after George Eveneshen. He started clearing the trail along the river and it was eventually completed with the help of Rotary, but credit was given to Eveneshen for doing a lot of the work. Besides being involved with Rotary, he was also a volunteer firefighter in Burns Lake, serving as fire chief for 24 years.

When he moved here with his wife in 1989 he was determined to take it easy.

“I wasn’t going to do anything and after a few months my wife said, ‘Get out of the kitchen.’”

From then on, Evenshen has been an invaluable volunteer with Rotary, the United Church Men’s Club, the Church’s Thrift Shop and the Senior’s Drop-In Centre, and he is always willing to help his neighbours with jobs like clearing their driveways in the winter and splitting wood.

About 12 years ago he lost several fingers in a snowblower accident. His fingers were reattached and don’t work as well, but that hasn’t slowed him

His philanthropist attitude and unwavering volunteer work extends beyond soccer.

One year he was president of the soccer and baseball associations and recording secretary

for minor hockey.

“It was fun but crazy,” he says laughing.

Because he studied in Cuba as a university exchange student years ago, he saw the poverty and wanted to do something to help the youth. Three times since then he has gone back, including this past spring break, to drop off baseball equipment so less fortunate children can participate in Cuba’s national pastime.

For over two decades the SYSA has been able to count on Walters to help with whatever was needed. It so happens that coincides with his attitude of volunteerism.

“You find out what the sport needs and do it.”

HONOURABLE MENTION: Rochelle Dale

Many Canadians love hockey.

So does Rochelle Dale but that doesn’t mean she sits in front of the TV cheering on her favourite team, instead she volunteered for five years on the Salmon Arm Minor Hockey Association board and billeted hockey players for 11 years.

“I loved having young people in my home, I thrive on that. I like to be around energy. It keeps you young. My kids were three and five when I started billeting, they loved it.”

Her community volunteering for organizations dedicated to youth was driven by her involvement in her children’s lives.

While that inspired her, in the end, it was really all about the community.

“When your kids are involved, you need to be involved in the big picture. When I think back to being on the minor hockey board, It was never about ‘my’ children, it

was about where the organization is going and how is it going to benefit the most kids.”

In the past she was chair of the Parent Advisory Council (PAC) at Bastion and now is chair of the dry grad committee.

Quite aside from volunteering, her home was always the ‘koolaid’ house, where all the kids gathered on the front driveway to play.

With her children being older, her volunteerism has changed focus and now she is a director on the Salmon Arm Savings and Credit Union (SASCU) Board. Although her focus has changed, she still believes it’s important to stay involved.

“I think you have to find your niche and you need to be involved.”

Youth Volunteer

Reg Walters wasn’t a soccer player himself when he was young, he was a baseball and hockey guy. But when he moved back to Salmon Arm from Vancouver in the mid 1990s with his family, his sons got into soccer and he soon became an invaluable asset to Shuswap Youth Soccer Association (SYSA). He says the city was basically a ‘non-soccer society’ at the time but the number of youth signed up for soccer jumped within a few years from 450 to over 1,400.

“There was such a need for volunteers so I pitched in,” he says.

Walters has been a long serving referee, coach, player, SYSA board member including chair, as well as a strong all-round soccer supporter. It is well known and appreciated fact that Walters is the first to volunteer, whether it’s coaching, moving the portable nets to the fields, fixing nets or a drawer in the soccer administrator’s desk, or helping at the volunteer appreciation barbecue.

He was also one of the driving forces behind the construction of the Little Moun-

McIntyre-Paul was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal for his outstanding volunteer activity and commitment and was recently profiled by BC Healthy Communities as a trailblazer on mobilizing change.

Last fall Shuswap MLA Greg Kyllo brought the work of the Shuswap Trail Alliance and Phil McIntyre Paul to the attention of the Legislature in Victoria and led a round of applause.

“May the House please join me in thanking Phil McIntyre-Paul, Executive Director, along with Lori Schneider Wood, Veda Roberge, along with the executive and amazing volunteers of the Shuswap Trail Alliance for their hard work in providing such an amazing opportunity for residents and visitors to experience the natural beauty of the Shuswap.”

The trails have become an incalculable economic driver in the region as adventure tourism is now the big drawing card.

“These trails are extremely important for tourism,” says Salmon Arm Chamber of Commerce General Manager Corryn Grayston. “The face of tourism is changing and our observation is that people are wanting to recreate closer to nature and these trails allow them to do that. They are paramount to the success of the tourism sector.”

McIntyre-Paul says when he hears visitors and tourists admire the beauty of the Shuswap, it makes him appreciate all the more that he gets to live in a place with trails that are “ridiculously awesome.”

In helping create these trails, he says, the STA is reactivating pathways and waterways the Secwepecmc have been walking and paddling for 10,000 years and connecting that legacy to future generations.

Having these beautiful and accessible trails encourage people to explore the beautiful place we call home.

“My world is about how we relate to each other and our landscape. You can’t relate to it unless you’re moving through it,” he says.

“This is a special place and we’re privileged to live here.”

Leader of the Year

His official title is Executive Director of the Shuswap Trail Alliance (STA), but Phil McIntyre-Paul has been more accurately been described as the ‘Pied Piper of Trails in the Shuswap’ or simply ‘The Trail Guy.’ The Shuswap Trail Alliance is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year and McIntyrePaul was one of the founding members and its tireless advocate. He has spent countless hours building trails, and community. The strength of STA and the underlying reason for its successes are the strong relationships that have been forged among government agencies, local organizations, First Nations, and volunteer groups. Having worked with the Economic Development Society and Community Futures when he moved here two decades ago, he was aware that many small groups were working on different trail projects throughout the region and applying for funding. He knew that strong relationships would be the building blocks of community trail development.

“We pulled folks together - those who were struggling as smaller stewardship organizations. We pulled everyone together to align efforts and achieve some economy of scale.”

By combining efforts the STA was able to leverage grants and soon there were five new trail systems in different areas around the Shuswap, and that was just the beginning. Over the past 10 years the STA has completed over 170 projects valued at more than $1.8 million and has engaged over 200 groups, organizations, and businesses. The STA completed 11 signature trail systems, 27 trails, and eight major upgrades among
