The rain was coming down hard over the Oakdale mobile home park on Tuesday afternoon when Cheryl McIntyre’s neighbour called and told her to look at what was happening down the road.

From the front of her home, McIntyre could look right down the street to where water was flooding over Westsyde Road, down the cliffside and onto neighbouring homes in a muddy waterfall.

“It came right straight down and there was no stopping it,” she recalled yesterday.

A few homes down, Roger Guay walked down his front steps into waist-deep water.

“I went out and people’s boats were floating in the yard,” he said.

Soon after, both were being shuttled out of the park with whatever they could gather in 15 minutes as the city declared a state of local emergency and evacuated the area.

Though that evacuation order was rolled back Wednesday night, many residents were coming back for the first time yesterday morning to a neighbourhood awash in mud.

While the damage is localized — a few streets up, only a little dust on the road suggests some event might have occurred and residents mowed their lawns and rode bikes as usual — it’s dramatic.

Piles of mud scraped off the road stand kneehigh some spots, while timber on a retaining wall closest to Westsyde Road was ripped clear of their positions.

McIntyre said she’s in good shape — the mud didn’t reach her backyard and, unlike some, her electricity is working.

Speaking with Red Cross volunteers in the neighbourhood on behalf of the city, McIntyre said she’s more concerned about an elderly neighbour whose power was still out.

(City CAO David Trawin said BC Hydro was hoping to reconnect all homes by the end of yesterday, but was waiting for wiring to dry out in some units before doing so.)

Guay said other than a muddy interior, he’s faring pretty well, with no structural damage.

Other residents reported similar circumstances, though at least one trailer did appear to have been shifted on its foundation.

While the city is still investigating the causes of the flooding, Trawin said it appears some combination of the intensity of the rain and the debris swept along by water rushing downslope overwhelmed Kamloops’ stormwater system.

“The two ravines in that area catch a large amount of water. If you look at city mapping, those ravines go well up into Lac du Bois, so when that area got hit a lot of water channels through those ravines,” Trawin said.

Water swept down ravines above Westsyde Road and across Parkview Drive, carving a chan-

nel as it went and punching through at least one homeowner’s fence.

The city was still assessing how much damage the flooding caused and what repairs it will need to make to its drainage channels and areas hit by erosion.

Trawin said re-establishing its overland drainage routes will be among the first priorities, along with a temporary solution to erosion damage along the eastern sidewalk on Westsyde Road.

“There’s significant erosion in the right of way right to the edge of the sidewalk on Westsyde Road, which ends in a 10 or 15 foot drop now,” Trawin said. While the city doesn’t think the road is compromised, it will need both a quick and longer-term fix for the issue.

The city helped pump water out of Oakdale on the day of the flooding, but Trawin said it’s now up to property owners to continue cleaning up from the flooding.

Oakdale residents may be eligible for disaster financial assistance from the provincial government if insurance doesn’t cover their losses, which can be the case with overland flooding.

Westsyde wasn’t the only area of the city to see debris and erosion, Trawin said.

Barnhartvale roads also took a hit during the downpour, though without the flash flooding.

Paula Davies doesn’t know what Wheels was shot with, but the damage done to the 11-month-old brown tabby cat is clear.

Wheels’ Monte Creek owners brought him to the Kamloops Veterinary Clinic, where Davies is a vet, on Monday because he wasn’t putting weight on one of his front paws.

X-rays revealed not only had the kitten been shot, but whatever ammunition was used had destroyed one of Wheels’ front elbow joints.

“Basically, the metal is in multiple fragments, as well as

his bone is shattered in that joint,” Davies said.

Wheels’ leg will have to be amputated and the clinic is looking to the community to help give him a new threelegged lease on life.

Davies and other staff at the clinic will volunteer their time and expertise to amputate Wheels’ front leg.

They will also neuter him.

Volunteering their time to do this will bring down the cost of what would otherwise be a $1,700 procedure, but the clinic still needs to cover the $500 to $700 in anesthesia and other supply costs for the surgery.

Davies is hoping to fundraise for that bill.

And, once the kitten recovers, they are also hoping to find him a new home — indoor-only this time, Davies said.

Beyond that, Davis expects the kitten will thrive once he has met the right new caretakers.

“He’s really handsome and he’s very good-natured, so we wanted to take the opportunity to fix him rather than put him down — because that’s what the owners may have had to do if they couldn’t afford to fix him,” Davies said.

“We didn’t want to put him down.”

Midway through publication of a three-part series, a B.C. Supreme Court judge imposed a ban on publication that prevents Kamloops This Week from reporting key facts in the RCMP case against accused murderer Peter Beckett.

Crown prosecutor Sarah Firestone made an application to ban any publication of Crown disclosure — the detailed package of material, including police investigation reports, statements and interviews, provided to the accused — prior to Beckett’s trial before a judge and jury.

A date has not been set for the jury portion of the trial in B.C. Supreme Court, but voir dire hearings to determine whether certain evidence can be admitted are set for September and October.

Citing the need to protect potential jurors from information and Beckett’s right to a fair trial, Firestone said the material belongs to the Crown and cannot be used for anything other than by prosecution and defence for purposes of the trial.

“This is a jury trial,” Firestone said.

“Kamloops This Week is the only remaining newspaper in this community and this is a cover-page story.

“The Crown wants to avoid a trial in the court of public opinion before Mr. Beckett is tried by a jury of his peers.

“We’re not asking for anyone’s freedom of expression to be denied, but to be delayed.”

Justice Ian Meiklem ordered the ban and the return of Crown materials not in Beckett’s possession.

Firestone also questioned whether Beckett’s version of the events surrounding his criminal charges should be allowed to be made public, as they were in yesterday’s edition of KTW. Defence lawyer Don Campbell, however, argued that it’s important for Beckett to get his side of the story into the community.

“What’s out there right now is an absolutely scathing and one-sided condemnation of Mr. Beckett without any semblance of fairness or balance,” he said.

“His position has never been fairly placed in front of the public.”

KTW obtained Crown disclosure outlining the investigation of Beckett, accused of the first-degree murder of his wife, Laura Letts, as well as conspiracy to kill five Crown witnesses.

The ban, issued on June 30, prevents the newspaper from publishing those facts prior to conclusion of the trial.

The newspaper’s lawyer, David Sutherland, argued successfully that the ban should not include pretrial conferences and other matters not directly part of Beckett’s trial.

Was money the motive?

eter Beckett and Laura Letts led a seemingly happy, though sometimes tumultuous, life that included frequent vacations and many happy moments, but one fact is clear — Beckett stood to gain a significant amount of money in the event of Letts’ death.

This is the third and final instalment in The Real Mr. Big series. It was supposed to detail the Crown’s case against Beckett, the former New Zealand politician who is charged with the firstdegree murder of his wife in B.C. in 2010, based on an exhaustive review of investigative and Crown documents obtained by KTW. That changed earlier this week when the Kamloops Crown counsel office applied for and was granted an injunction barring KTW from publishing anything from those documents.

So, piecing together information from pre-trial hearings last year, court documents that are not covered by the injunction and information gleaned from

jailhouse interviews with Beckett and other witnesses, here is the pared-down version of the case against the man who calls himself The Real Mr. Big. We can’t tell you what started the ball rolling on a homicide investigation after Letts drowned in Upper Arrow Lake on Aug. 18, 2010.

We can tell you, however, based on the comments of Crown prosecutor Will Burrows during a July 2014 pre-trial conference, about a threat Beckett allegedly made on Letts’ life prior to her death.

Burrows said a friend of Letts told police about a conversation she had with the deceased years earlier about drowning.

BECKETT Beckett said the same in an interview with KTW. We can’t tell you what police believe Beckett’s motive was in allegedly killing Letts.

We can tell you, though, based on information that came out in a pre-trial hearing last year, that he stood to gain a significant amount of money in the event of his wife’s death.

Court heard Beckett would have been entitled to Letts’ teaching pension and a substantial six-figure lifeinsurance payout — some of which had allegedly been entered into a month before she died.

We also can’t tell you about any of the inconsistencies police claim to have found in Beckett’s version of the events of Aug. 18, 2010, or Beckett’s response to those alleged inconsistencies.

We can tell you that, prior to his arrest, police had Beckett take part in a

LETTS videotaped re-enactment of his version of events.

Another thing we can’t tell you much about is Beckett’s alleged plot to kill five Crown witnesses — both of Letts’ parents, her cousin, the lead RCMP investigator and an Alberta lawyer.

We can tell you that Beckett and the would-be hit man, his cellmateturned police agent, are accused of creating an alpha-numeric code to identify the intended targets.

We can also tell you that the police investigation prior to Beckett’s arrest was long and thorough.

That’s all we can tell you about the case against Peter Beckett.

None of the allegations have been proven in court and Beckett maintains his innocence.

A jury-selection date has not yet been set for Beckett’s trial.

There is still information about the final hours of Laura Letts’ life that investigators know nothing about.

Savona resident Elaine Haywood-Farmer said she and her husband met Letts and Peter Beckett at Shelter Bay in

mid-August of 2010.

“They took us for a ride in their boat,” she told KTW. “Everything seemed fine. He was very talkative, she was a little less talkative.”

Haywood-Farmer said she enjoyed the couple. She has family from the same part of rural Alberta where Beckett and Letts lived, so they had lots to talk about.

“We had quite good chats,” she said.

“I think we even had supper together.”

But, Haywood-Farmer said, she could sense that not everything was perfect in the Beckett-Letts marriage.

“I just thought she was more open when he wasn’t around,” she said.

Haywood-Farmer was never

interviewed by police and was not aware Letts had drowned until reading about it this week in KTW. “I just thought, ‘Wow,’” she said.

“When we were out on the boat, I said to my husband, ‘We don’t know these people very well. We could just fly out of this boat and no one would know.’”

Wheels of justice turn slow for Beckett TIM PETRUK

If things go according to plan, a jury will start hearing the case against Peter Beckett sometime next year.

If things go the way they have been going, though, that’s not likely to happen.

To say Beckett’s case has wound through the courts at a snail’s pace would be an understatement.

In four years, he has gone through four lawyers — each of which equals months in delays — and has been self-represented since 2013. Earlier this year, Beckett made a special application to receive legal-aid funding.

It was denied.

In court last week, he tried to make the same application,

but the judge said he would not hear it.

Beckett is a prolific filer of applications. He has submitted thousands of hand-written sheets of paper to the court ranging from accusations of misconduct on the part of the Crown and the judge to bizarre claims.

Some of the applications are backed by meticulously researched case law. Others read more like the accusatory ramblings of someone who is locked in a jail cell 23 hours a day.

In one application, he compared B.C. Supreme Court Justice Ian Meiklem to an obscure Australian dessert. “[The] Meiklem clan, that some say is as corrupt as much as a Lamington is with coconut,” the application read.

“Meiklems and Lamingtons are related. A Lamington is

sponge, covered in icing, rolled in coconut dust.”

Beckett told KTW he’s constantly writing.

“I write an incredible amount,” he said.

“If you were in my position, you’d have to.”

Beckett’s matter is complicated further by disclosure issues.

In 2014, he admitted in court to smuggling a hard drive of disclosure out of Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre.

He refuses to tell anyone where it is, and Meiklem responded with an order halting further disclosure from the Crown to Beckett — though prosecutor Sarah Firestone said some documents have continued to be provided to Beckett in court.

he needs to continue to receive disclosure in order to defend himself.

His trial was supposed to have started in January, with three months of hearings to determine the admissibility of evidence before going in front of a jury in the spring.

That did not happen. It was delayed after Beckett decided he wanted to make that special application for legal aid.

Now, those evidentiary hearings are slated to begin in September, but no date has been set for jury selection.

Beckett said he’s eager to get the trial over with. He also denied having any role in the continued delays.

“There’s no way in the world that the Crown can say in any way, shape or form that I delayed my trial,” he said.

If you believe Peter Beckett, he’s an innocent man who’s been locked up for four years for no good reason.

According to Beckett, he’s nothing more than a grieving widower. In a series of jailhouse interviews over the last three months, Beckett opened up to KTW to offer his side of the story.

HOT: The immediate response by City of Kamloops crews and all emergency personnel in the wake of Tuesday’s torrential downpour and subsequent flash flooding in Westsyde.

The storm rolled in quickly and left a trail of mud and debris and damage to property, but crews were on scene quickly to assess the situation.

Residents forced to leave their homes in the Oakdale mobile-home park were taken to Interior Savings Centre for their safety as the city declared a local state of emergency.

There will be complaints here and there about how the fastevolving emergency situation was handled, but from our standpoint, those in charge did the best they could do as Mother Nature raged at Kamloops.

As noted on our front page and on page A5, a cat named Wheels was taken to the Kamloops Veterinary Clinic this week after its owners found it had been shot in the right front leg.

Ottawa’s grimiest run amok

T

he Senate of Canada and communist governments both look very well on paper.

But, in their practical application, corruption becomes rampant at the expense of peasants.

They have the most secure jobs in the country.

Our members of Parliament, on the other hand, are held accountable to their local constituents every four years (or less) by federal elections. It’s easy to flush the toilet if an MP stinks.

But, Senators get to ride the gravy train until they’re forced to retire at 75 — just in time to forfeit their driver’s licences.

To justify their $138,000 salary (plus frivolous expenses), senators are supposed to oversee resolutions made in Parliament, since MPs can be tempted to make short-sighted decisions for the sake of an election campaign, rather than act in the best interest of the country.

So, to keep their minds off the desire to win an election/ popularity contest, senators are supposed to look at the big picture and forgo electoral tunnel vision. They earn the role by getting hand-picked by the prime minister.

After accepting a veiled bribe of a six-figure salary, it’s unrealistic to expect a senator to free him or herself from party affiliation.

But, to the credit of Stephen Harper, who advocates the Senate needs to reform or abolish — he hasn’t been filling many of the vacancies despite the obvious advantage and 20 seats are currently sitting empty.

If senators did think for themselves, the system would work.

But, in the entire chamber, only two parties represent 77 senators out of 85.

That leaves only six who can vote independently — and three of them have been suspended in disgrace (their hands were caught really far down the cookie jar).

In theory, the Senate prevents any rash decisions from being made in Ottawa by providing sober second thought.

It’s purpose is very relatable to alcohol, which can entice exciting brainstorming sessions; ideas that seem really clever when drinking.

Oftentimes, though, once the alcohol has worn off, those ideas turn out to be nonsense

and hopefully weren’t acted upon.

With the current state of the Canadian Senate, a 4 a.m. voicemail left with an ex would be approved without hesitation.

Senators are mostly intelligent people, but they don’t use their brains to think about anything altruistic. Voting against the team is unheard of over anything that matters. And, since the majority of seats in both the Senate and the House of Commons belong to the same party, the Conservatives don’t have much trouble shapeshifting the law.

Take Bill C-51 as a testament to the uselessness of Senate.

The bill loosened the Criminal Code’s definition of “terrorism offences” to the point where CSIS will have Gestapo-like spying powers.

With the Conservative lubricant in the chamber, it slid right through Senate without any amendments.

Then again, it can be hard to take seriously the abilities of our virtual security when a group of teenage hackers who were upset about Bill C-51 managed to take down four of the federal government’s most-used websites.

The Red Chamber was originally founded to reinforce democracy, but now it does nothing more than insult its integrity.

It’s time for the Canadian Senate to go the way of the Iron Curtain.

THESE TEACHERS DESERVE APPLES — AND MORE Editor: After 10 years in Kamloops, our family is relocating to Alberta.

Before we go, I want to publicly express my appreciation for some exceptional Kamloops teachers — two of whom, sadly, are caught up in the recently announced school district layoffs.

I do not claim to understand the politics of this, but there is something wrong when teachers of this calibre lose their jobs.

Whatever school district they end up in will be so blessed to have them, but it will be a huge loss to Kamloops if this happens.

Lauren Bell and Trevor Pendergast have both been teaching in the International Baccalaureate program at NorKam secondary.

They teach with passion, engaging and challenging their students and making them want to learn and strive to do their very best.

Thanks to them for all they have contributed to our son’s learning and success.

Two other teachers who come to mind are

Ashley Shannik and Val Shannik, both of whom have contributed greatly to athletics in our community.

They have coached teams in schools other than the ones at which they teach because they care about the kids and want to ensure students can experience all of the benefits of participating in school team sports.

Finally, I want to give an extra special shout out to Val Shannik.

She has gone so far above and beyond in helping our son succeed — even after he was no longer in one of her classes or even in her school. We cannot thank her enough.

I wish there was a structure in place that rewarded these exceptional teachers — of which I am sure there are many more in our community — but, I wanted to especially thank the ones who have directly touched our lives.

HARPER’S ACTIONS MEAN WE NEED TO STAND ON GUARD Editor: I read in a recent issue of MoneySense magazine that the Canadian government, which before now could only share your tax information with CSIS, the RCMP and FINTRAC (an agency overseeing suspicious transactions) can now share this information (and health records) with 13 additional government agencies, thanks to Bill C-51.

This doesn’t even begin to touch the topic of whose computers they can now snoop on and for whatever “imperative” reasons they may choose to use as an excuse.

The new role of a judge, it seems, is rather than issue warrants to prevent constitutional violations as before, they now can offer to CSIS and other agencies special permission to violate the constitution in instances in which CSIS feels there may be a threat to the coun-

try or its economy (in undefined, ambiguous language), with no oversight once granted, including detention without being charged for up to seven days.

Unions? First Nations Groups?

Environmentalists? Muslims? All could be deemed a threat to Canada in the eyes of the government.

Pandora’s Box has been opened, no thanks to all those fearful voters who trust the government implicitly and who trust the Stephen Harper regime is a government ruled by the people, for the people.

One nut with a gun in Ottawa and a “maybe” threat from ISIL to some shopping mall was all it seems to have taken to toss our privacy rights under the bus.

Somehow, I feel much less safe with our friend at home than with the enemy abroad.

I suspect my own computer will now be fair game as a potential threat to our democracy, perhaps especially for its owner’s definitive anti-Harper attitude.

The prime minister is morphing our country, through passage of omnibus bills, the stifling of parliamentary debate and the silencing of scientists, into something of which I am no longer proud.

Our nation has already become unrecognizable as the Canada that used to be absolutely respected throughout most of the civilized world.

Let’s stand on guard, Canada. It is the government that should fear the people, not the people who should fear the government.

Simulating poverty a sobering experience KTW reporter Jessica Klymchuk took part in the United Way’s poverty simulation, which was held recently in Kamloops.

The simulation is part of an effort to raise awareness of the challenges of getting by on low incomes.

I

had no money, no job, a oneyear-old son and was about to lose my incomesupport benefits.

My live-in boyfriend’s wages were being garnished for child support he owed for a kid he fathered as a teenager, so he was making just over $6 an hour.

Our monthly income was nowhere near

enough to cover rent and utilities.

Luckily, this month I could use my incomesupport benefits to buy the necessities — food, clothing and hygiene products.

I pawned our stereo, jewelry and TV to keep our home.

I was looking for a job but, without even a high school diploma or any prior work experience, it proved difficult.

As I contemplated whether I was doing anything right, a voice echoed in the back of my head: “This is not a game, it’s a simulation.”

The local United Way’s poverty-simulation certainly did not feel like a game, especially since there’s no correct way to navigate it.

I joined 60 participants as we were grouped into family units or singles and handed a package describing who we were and what situation we were in.

Tables circling the room represented various services — staffed

by United Way volunteers with directions of their own.

During the hourlong simulation, 15 minutes represented one week, with a threeminute weekend.

The simulation’s goal was to account for almost everything one might find in everyday life as a low-income person living in poverty in an effort to raise community awareness.

Last year, the ASK Wellness Society counted 77 people living on the street in Kamloops.

According to the BC Poverty Reduction Coalition, despite living in one of the wealthiest provinces in the country, 10.7 per cent of British Columbians live in poverty.

The province’s childpoverty rate, at 11.3 per cent, has been the highest in Canada for eight of the last nine years.

described as the working poor, as almost 50 per cent of poor children live in families in which at least one parent is working full-time.

The simulation creates situations based on real-life examples.

“We are in a beautiful hotel with great resources. We all probably had a fairly easy time getting here,” said Sheilah Pittman of Edmonton’s United Way, who has led more than 45 poverty simulations.

“We’re using paper money. So, there are definitely elements of it that are so not real,” “However, it’s very real in helping to illustrate how complex of an issue poverty is and why you need comprehensive community solutions — and you need all partners working together.”

By the end of the simulation, it seemed many people had started to develop a routine.

Perhaps they learned how to prioritize tasks,

even when every task could be considered a basic need: Will it be food or rent this month?

School or the doctor?

About 15 of us sat in a focus group when the hour was up. Everyone agreed solutions to the problems we all faced were complicated.

“You can’t just get a job and it will all be better. My kids were eight and 10 and we were relying on them like they were adults,” said participant Bob Cowden.

Immediate crisis and needs were coming from every angle, he said.

Danielle Bauhuis started the exercise with $10 as a single mother and her 17-year-old son spent most of the “four weeks” in juvenile hall for stealing.

Her 14-year-old simulation daughter, Diane Down, was pregnant and described a feeling of “quiet desperation” as a neglected child.

“Nobody talks about living in poverty,” Down

said. “Treating people with dignity is the most we can do for each other.”

The exercise has shown to connect participants to the cause on an emotional level and Pittman said she always sees people leave with a motivation to do more within their communities, be it purchasing food packages for the food bank, sitting on a task force to end poverty, making a donation or volunteering their time.

The United Way funds collaborative programs that address poverty, such as the Kamloops Rent Bank, which helps keep people in stable rental housing.

“One of the areas we work in is helping people to move from poverty to possibility,” said Brenda Aynsley, executive director of the United Way Thompson Nicola Cariboo.

“It’s collaborations like this that provide the awareness.”

Emergency crews were called to a stretch of Highway 5A south of Knutsford just after 2 p.m. yesterday after a fatal single-vehicle motorcycle crash. The BC Coroners Service is investigating the incident and the name of the deceased has not been released.

Kamloops Mounties had their guns drawn as they dealt with a situation in Brocklehurst yesterday that saw multiple roads being closed to traffic.

The Crown is asking for a Chase woman to repay about $5,000 after she pleaded guilty yesterday to defrauding the Ministry of Social Development.

Mary Kuch pleaded guilty in B.C. Supreme Court to fraud between March 2010 and May 2012, when she collected income assistance. She agreed to plea to the lesser crime after originally being charged with fraud over $5,000. The plea bargain between Crown and defence came immediately before what was intended to be a two-day trial.

Prosecutor Frank Caputo said the Crown will ask for a restitution order to the range of about $5,000 as part of the sentencing hearing.

Lawyers will argue the range of sentencing at a later date, during which details of the fraud will be heard.

Defence lawyer Don Campbell said he will argue for a discharge for Kuch, who agrees she must repay amounts illegally obtained from the ministry.

The Crown is expected to ask for a conditional sentence order and lengthy probation for Kuch.

his is it for the third-year Kamloops Players Bench RiverDogs, the last chance to win the Daley and Company Canada Day Classic, one final shot at a victory that would snap a 14-year drought for

the local midget AAA baseball squad.

“We’re playing really good ball right now, so it’s a good time to come into a tournament like this,” said Bryant Jameus, a pitcher and shortstop for the Dogs.

“To win, especially in our third year, it

would be nice to go out with something big like that.”

Shortstop Bryant Jameus is aiming to capitalize on his last chance at the Canada Day Classic.

RiverDogs manager Sean Wandler offered an explanation for the team’s inability to hoist the trophy in an interview with KTW before the 2012 tournament.

“It’s a product of the teams that we invite here,” Wandler said.

“They’re the cream of the crop out of their cities.

“We do that on purpose. We don’t want to play teams out of our league.

“That’s sort of the allure of the tournament and the excitement for the kids and myself.”

Despite a relatively young team featuring seven first-year players, Kamloops is having a strong season in B.C. Baseball Association play, holding third place with a record of 25-13, behind Chilliwack (24-8) and Ridge Meadows (32-3).

“I don’t know if we’re surprised by it,” third-year catcher Connor McKenzie said. “I don’t think we expected anything else than to be in the top eight.

“We’ve been able to hit well and, when we’re not hitting, our defence kicks in.”

Success in league play last

year did not translate into wins at the Canada Day Classic, with the RiverDogs sputtering out of the tournament after a fifth-place finish in round-robin play.

Kamloops was 14-8 on the season in 2014 heading into the Norbrock tourney.

McKenzie remembers well the crushing defeat in the 2013 final, in which Kamloops’ pitching faltered and the high-powered Blaze lit up the scoreboard.

The RiverDogs do not have an overpowering arm on this year’s pitching staff, but Wandler said the team has not had this much depth on the mound in a long time.

If the Dogs can get hot at the plate and remain stalwart in defence, which has been strong most of the season, this might be the year the Canada Day Classic Curse is broken.

“It would be an unreal feeling,” third-year first baseman and pitcher Riley Jepson said. “We got pretty close in our first year against Langley and the loss was pretty hard.

“This year, if we won it, that would be great.”

Jays fans hopes rising Tiger in hunt at

D

on’t look now, but the Toronto Blue Jays are contenders.

It’s far too early to start making World Series plans, but there’s something about the 2015 Jays that seems to point toward a better than normal finish to the season.

Don’t forget, the 2014 World Series champion San Francisco Giants barely squeaked into the playoffs, getting one of two National League wildcard berths after winning only 88 games, before running the table behind Madison Bumgarner’s arm to win the Series.

This year’s Jays are fun to watch.

Back on May 1, they were a sadsack crew, 13-15 and dead last in the American League East, generally regarded as the weakest of baseball’s six divisions. But an 11-game winning streak, some powerful hitting and some great pitching from guys like Marco Estrada (who?) and suddenly, the Jays are sitting one game back in the tightlycontested AL East and poised to not only win a wildcard spot, but perhaps the division title.

Some of the usual suspects are carrying part of the load.

Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion are pounding homers with regularity, and

BRUCE PENTON off-season acquisitions Josh Donaldson (from Oakland, for Brett Lawrie) and catcher Russell Martin (free agency) have sparkled.

Rookies Chris Colabello, Devon Travis and Kevin Pillar have made outstanding contributions. The Jays have scored more runs than anyone in major league baseball — by far — and if the pitching gets more consistent, manager John Gibbons crew might run away with the division crown.

The Jays have experience on the mound with R.A. Dickey and Mark Buehrle, and Drew Hutchinson has been a pleasant surprise, posting a 7-1 record through June.

Then along comes rookie Estrada, who put up a 5-3 record through June, and Jays’ fans’ hopes start to bloom.

The Achilles heel is the bullpen.

Toronto’s save percentage is the worst in the majors, an almost unheard-off sub.500 record.

Toronto hasn’t made

the playoffs since 1993, when they won the World Series for the second straight year (remember Joe Carter high-stepping it around the bases?).

Their playoff drought is the longest of any MLB team, but if Donaldson, Estrada, Colabello and the other ‘new’ Jays keep up their great play, the whole country might be ignoring hockey until early November.

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — Tiger Woods has rebounded from a dismal U.S. Open with a 4-under-par 66 in the opening round of The Greenbrier Classic.

Helped by yesterday’s morning rain that softened the Old White TPC course in West Virginia, Woods posted his lowest score of the season and matched his best in relation to par. It was only the fourth time he shot in the 60s in 21 rounds.

Two weeks ago at the U.S. Open, Woods had the highest 36-hole score of his pro career — 156.

He started on the back nine yesterday and shook off a double bogey on the sixth hole. He finished his round with three straight birdies.

Scott Langley was 8-underpar and held a one-shot lead over Jonathan Byrd as of KTW’s press deadline yesterday.

LONDON — With a casual between-thelegs shot, Roger Federer displayed the magic that makes him so special on Centre Court at Wimbledon.

In a vintage performance from the grasscourt master, Federer blew away American Sam Querrey 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 yesterday to reach the third round and crank up his bid for a record eighth title at the All England Club.

And, for good measure, Federer produced another highlight-reel moment to add to his collection of breathtaking shots.

With Querrey serving at 4-2 down in the second set, Federer scampered to his right along the baseline and nonchalantly flicked a shot between his legs — a “tweener’’ — for a perfect lob over the American’s head at the net. Querrey chased down the ball but hit a forehand into the net.

“It’s rare that it happens, so when you get them you’ve got to pull it off,’’ Federer said. “It was a perfect shot. I even

had a little bit of time. I had to shuffle with the legs to get in position.

I just felt like I had the time. But, you know, if you don’t win the point you do look a little bit silly.’’

Federer looked anything but silly on this day, playing the freeflowing all-court tennis that has brought him 17 Grand Slam titles.

The two players were even at 4-4 in the first set when Federer broke Querrey with a trademark cross-court backhand passing shot — punctuated with a fist pump and a shout of “Come on!’’

From then on, it was all Federer. He broke five times in all, saved both break points he faced, had 32 winners to just 10 unforced errors, and closed out the match in less than 90 minutes.

It was another quick-fire win for the second-seeded Swiss, who dropped just seven games in his first-round

victory over Damir Dzumhur “I’ve had a good run so you don’t want it to stop on the first or second round,’’ Federer said. “I guess there’s also a little bit of relief that I’m actually playing well here at Wimbledon as well.’’

Another former men’s champion also won in easy fashion yesterday.

Bidding for his second Wimbledon title in three years, thirdseeded Andy Murray was barely tested as he swept past an ineffective Robin Haase of the Netherlands 6-1, 6-1, 6-4 on Court 1 to advance to the third round.

It took Murray only 1 hour, 27 minutes to dispatch the 28thranked Haase, who beat him on a hard court in Rotterdam in 2008 but never mounted a serious challenge Tuesday.

Murray, who became the first homegrown men’s champion in 77 years when he won Wimbledon in 2013, is setting himself up for another serious title run this year.

“It was a good match from start to finish for me and obviously getting the early lead helped,’’ Murray said. “I

was very happy with the way that I played.’’

Murray tossed his wristbands into the crowd — and happened to hit Wimbledon chairman Philip Brook, who was sitting next to Prince Charles’ wife, Camilla, the Duchess of York.

“I saw her briefly after the match,’’ Murray said. “Then the Duchess opened up her bag and my wristband was in there, so he [Brook] obviously had given it to her.’’

Defending women’s champion Petra Kvitova also enjoyed an easy run into round 3. The second-seeded Czech routed Kurumi Nara of Japan 6-2, 6-0 in less than an hour on Court 1. Kivitova has dropped just three games in two matches so far.

Fifth-seeded Caroline Wozniacki nearly blew a big lead before recovering to beat Denisa Allertova of the Czech Republic 6-1, 7-6 (6). The former No. 1, who has never advanced past the fourth round here, was up 5-1 in the second set but faltered as Allertova won five straight games.

Wozniacki held to force the tiebreaker, where she converted on her second match point.

San Diego Chargers tight end Antonio Gates was suspended without pay yesterday for the first four games of the 2015 season for violating the NFL’s policy on performanceenhancing substances.

The NFL said in a statement that Gates can participate in training camp and pre-season games. He will be able to return to the active roster on Oct. 5, a day after the Chargers’ game against the Cleveland Browns.

Gates issued a statement through the team apologizing to the Chargers, his coaches, his teammates and the fans.

“In my 12 years in the NFL, I have taken tremendous pride in upholding the integrity of the NFL shield and all that it entails,’’ Gate said. “I have taken extreme care of my

body with a holistic approach and never taken any substance that was illegal or banned by the NFL. “In an effort to recover from a long season and although I was unaware at the time, I regret to confirm that I tested positive for a substance that is currently on the NFL banned substance list.’’

He said that as an NFL veteran, he should have made sure that what he was taking during his recovery met NFL guidelines.

“I have always believed that ignorance is no excuse when it comes to these issues, and I take full responsibility for my actions,’’ Gates said.

A statement from the Chargers said the team will continue to support Gates and is confident he will be ready to play when he returns in Week 5.

Just two weeks into the CFL season, Henry Burris and the Ottawa Redblacks are already closing on a franchise record.

Tomorrow, the Redblacks (1-0) host the B.C. Lions in their home opener looking for a second straight victory.

What makes that noteworthy is Ottawa won just two games all of last year in their inaugural season.

Game time is 3 p.m.

Ottawa opened its 2015 season with a 20-16 win over the Montreal Alouettes, the club’s first-ever road victory. It was a rather ordinary opener for Burris, who completed 23-of-36 passes for 263 yards and a TD but also three interceptions.

The Redblacks secured the win on Jeremiah Johnson’s six-yard TD run in the fourth quarter. It was set up

by Jovon Johnson’s interception of Montreal rookie quarterback Brandon Bridge, a native of Mississauga, Ont., who was playing after both starter Jonathan Crompton and backup Dan LeFevour suffered shoulder injuries.

Crompton is listed day-to-day with a shoulder bruise but LeFevour will miss the remainder of the season.

He is survived by his loving wife Marilyn; children Stanley, Sophia, Rosilyn, and Maymie; mother Myrtle; brothers Ian (Margaretanne) and Neil (Beverley); three step-siblings, and many nieces and nephews.

You may remember Ross as the Foursquare Church Pastor or the singing Santa bus driver who handed out “reindeer poop”. He was a man who was never afraid to break into song in public places, and who took every opportunity to lovingly embarrass his children.

His humour and wit will be greatly missed.

Albert Dale Mainprize of Kamloops passed away on Friday, June 26, 2015 at 88 years of age.

Sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his three children, and four grandchildren, daughter Mary (Rob) Hallam (Jocelyn) of Vancouver, his son Art (Shelly) Mainprize (Justin, Shane) and his step-son Alfie (Connie) Creighton (Kori).

He will be fondly remembered by his sister Audrey Darlington of Coquitlam and family.

Dale is predeceased by his wife, Winona (nee Vinson) in 2004.

He was born in Vancouver on July 8, 1926 to Lena Mary Dale and Thomas Arthur Mainprize.

Raised in Jasper, Alberta, Dale spent his youth riding horses and exploring the mountains. At 18, he signed on to the train service with the Canadian National Railway and after 38 year of riding the rails, retired as a conductor in 1981. He married Winona Vinson in 1957, and moved to Kamloops in 1963, where they raised their children.

Dale once said, “I have no regrets. I’ve lived a good life - I had a good job, a good family, and a whole lot of fun.” At Dale’s request, there will not be a service. The family will gather to celebrate his life in Jasper in September.

A special note of thanks to the doctors and medical team at Kamloops Royal Inland Hospital for their care and kindness; and to Dad’s neighbours and friends who made his final days good ones, we are forever grateful.

Harry “Sonny” Claude Faulkner died after a long battle with cancer on Tuesday, June 16.

“Sonny” was born in Blue River in 1937 and was predeceased by his wife and companion of 59 years Iris Leone Faulkner in January of this year.

MARVIN DONALD MELLER Marvin passed away suddenly, at his home in Barriere, BC, on Wednesday, June 24th, 2015 in his 77th year. Marvin was the beloved father of Don (Patty), and Cathy (Nick) . He was also the proud grandfather of fifteen grandchildren: Jeremy (Genna), Caleb, Kenneth, Matthew, Natika, Rachel, Andrew, Tiara, Rebecca, Matthias, Nathan, Jonathan, Hope, Joy and Ariana. He was the older brother to Ron (Bev) and Lorraine Meller, and older step-brother to Max and Joanne Meller.

Marv was born in 1937 to Clarence and Dagney Meller in Drumheller, AB. He had fond memories of growing up on the Prairies, both in Alberta and Montana as the oldest of the preacher’s kids. After attending Bible school, Marv turned his love of music into a lifelong vocation of piano tuning and piano restoration. He passed on his love of music to his grandchildren and taught many of them on the piano.

Marv loved the Lord and served Him in many churches over the years. He was a charter member of Westsyde Baptist in Kamloops and a deacon and member for many years at Bethany Baptist in Barriere. Please join us in remembering Marv on Friday, July 3rd, 2015. Sikh and you shall find the answers

I

f there were no such thing as Christianity, I would probably belong to the Sikh faith.

Obviously, I’m not a Sikh and have no qualifications to discuss the finer theological points of the Sikh religion.

I did take an introductory course in the Punjabi language many years ago, though, and was impressed by the Sikh greeting: “Sut Siri Akal,” which means “True Great Lord.”

It is an affirmation, when one Sikh greets another, of their allegiance to God and their shared faith.

We have an echo of that in our own language with “good-bye,” a contraction of “God be with ye.”

The Sikh faith began with Guru Nanak in about 1499.

Nanak was born to Hindu parents of the merchant class in 1469.

had a religious vision and announced there was “no Hindu and no Muslim.”

He declared he would only follow God’s path and encouraged others to do the same.

The writings of the gurus were collected by the Fifth Guru, Arjun, and compiled into the Adi Granth, or First Book of holy writings.

There were 10 gurus altogether, culminating with Guru Gobind Singh.

Gobind Singh formalized the identifying features of the Khalsa (the pure), the collective body of all baptized Sikhs, in 1699.

Baptized Sikhs are easily identified by their adherence to the five “K’s of Sikhism.

The “K’s are the physical articles of the faith mandated by the 10th Guru, Gobind Singh.

The first K is kesh, uncut hair. Like the Nazirites of Jewish tradition, baptized Sikhs must never cut their hair or trim their beards. The turban is considered a spiritual crown and a visible symbol of a Sikh’s devotion to God.

The second K is the kanga, a small wooden comb kept in the hair and used twice a day to comb out hair tangles.

It is a symbol of cleanliness and a reminder of the need to be tidy and organized in one’s life.

The kara (steel wrist bangle) symbolizes the neverending cycle of life and the link with other Khalsa Sikhs.

It is also a reminder that whatever one does with one’s hand should be in line with the teachings of the Gurus.

The kachera is the fourth K and is the special undergarment worn by all baptized Sikhs.

Originally, it was mandated so Sikh “warrior-saints” would be ready at a moment’s notice to mount their horses and go into battle to defend the faith and their community.

I was given a copy of the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh holy book, at Quesnel’s gurdwara some years ago.

As I read through it, I was struck by the similarities between it and the Psalms and Proverbs of the Christian Bible.

I came across a statement, though, that clearly illustrated the big difference between Christianity and Sikhism.

The Fundamentals of Gurmat 74 says: “God never takes birth in human form. The theory of incarnation is baseless.”

Obviously, the incarnation and the birth of Jesus Christ are essential elements of the Christian faith.

all times and symbolizes courage and a willingness to put oneself in harm’s way to defend the defenseless.

To me, the main appeal of Sikhism is the emphasis on moral virtues.

There are five primary ones: Sat (truthful living, with honesty, justice, impartiality and fair play); Santokh (contentment and freedom from covetousness, greed and envy); Daya (compassion toward others, being forgiving of the weaknesses of others and striving to relieve suffering in a practical way, such as the langar, a community meal open to anyone who is hungry); Nimrata (humility;) and Pyar (love of God).

Along with practising the five virtues, Sikhs must also strive to gain control over the Five Thieves, moral weaknesses that rob a person of

Living and dying in the Senate SUMMER BREAK SEES UPPER CHAMBER PASS BILL C-377, BUT ALLOW SINGLE SPORTS-BET BILL TO WITHER AND DIE OTTAWA — Three bills passed by the House of Commons had their fates decided by the Senate on the eve of Canada Day — one was pushed through by the Conservative majority, while the other two died without a word being spoken.

A third didn’t even get a mention, failing to come as far in the legislative process as it did two years ago.

Combined, they were the last acts of the Senate as it trudged into the summer after two years of scandal or questionable spending by 34 senators, and ethical questions surrounding one additional member of the upper chamber.

The Senate’s final vote before its summer break was a 35-22 result that passed Bill C-377 two years after senators originally gutted the legislation — an act of defiance by 16 Conservatives against their own government.

On Tuesday, only three Conservative senators voted against the legislation — John Wallace, Nancy Ruth and Diane Bellemare — while a fourth, Doug Black, abstained.

The bill requires unions to publicly disclose all transactions over $5,000, reveal the details of officers or executives who make over $100,000 and provide that information to the Canada Revenue Agency, which would publicly post the information to its website.

Conservatives argued the bill will shed light on union finances.

The federal privacy commissioner raised concerns about the scope of the bill, seven provinces said the bill is unconstitutional and numerous other labour associations have called for the bill’s defeat.

That led Senate Liberals to argue the bill’s passage would trigger a court challenge the government would lose.

Opposition leader James Cowan told the chamber during the last few hours of debate on the bill that its passage “provide ammunition to those who argue for [the Senate’s] abolition.’’

Former Conservative senator Hugh Segal, who led the uprising against the bill two years ago, had previously told The Canadian Press the passage of C-377 could hurt the Conservatives in dozens of ridings where labour unions could influence the outcome of the fall vote.

“Why somebody would decide that kind of suicidal, ideologically narrow excess is in the national or the party’s interests or the prime minister’s interests is completely beyond me,’’ Segal said in an interview last week.

In a statement on Tuesday, minutes after the final vote on C-377, Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau vowed to repeal the law

should his party form the next government.

Before the C-377 vote, the Senate allowed three other highprofile private member’s bills to die Tuesday without giving two a word of debate and letting a third become buried at committee.

by NDP MP Randall Garrison that was passed with bipartisan support in the House of Commons, effectively killing the legislation.

That move spared senators from having to vote on a bill that supporters said had been effectively gutted and stripped of any power during Senate committee hearings.

Senators were also denied the chance to debate committee amendments to a bill aimed at stripping convicted parliamentarians of their pensions, which also died an unceremonious death.

A third bill passed by the House of Commons with bipartisan support — one that would allow single-game sports betting — was left to wallow in a Senate committee and was never referred back to the Senate for further debate.

All other bills the Senate didn’t pass on Tuesday will die on the order paper.

VANCOUVER — Metro Vancouver mayors are calling on the province to find a way to fund transit upgrades now that residents have voted against paying an extra half-per cent sales tax to raise $7.5 billion.

There is “no Plan B’’ to come up with money for more buses, roads, a subway extension, a new bridge and other projects, said Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson, who heads the mayors’ council representing 21 municipalities and a First Nation.

Sixty-two per cent of Metro Vancouverites rejected the mayors’ tax-hike proposal.

“The mayors have been unanimous in stating that property tax is not an option to fund the mayors’ plan going forward. We need an alternate solution from the B.C. government,’’ Robertson said after Elections BC released the results of a plebiscite yesterday.

“It’s very difficult to work out how we might get different projects advanced, how we would access the funding from the provincial and federal governments and get those projects on track,’’ Robertson told a news conference.

over the next 30 years.

“We cannot expect to have those million people arrive here without improvements to the south of the Fraser [River] connection and I am committed to that rail project even given the disappointing results today,’’ she said.

Jordan Bateman, who was a prominent force against the tax hike, said cash-strapped residents wanted accountability and better management from TransLink, the region’s transit authority.

The No side prevailed with a campaign budget of $40,000, while the Yes side spent more than $5.8 million promoting its stance, noted Bateman, who heads the western chapter of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation.

Maple Ridge, Langley and Richmond residents voted overwhelmingly against the tax, while the highest support for the proposal came from residents on Bowen Island.

The Village of Belcarra and an unincorporated electoral area that includes the University of British Columbia were the only other jurisdictions to register more than 50 per cent support for the tax.

Residents in Vancouver voted 51 per cent against the proposal.

During the 2013 provincial election campaign, Premier Christy Clark called for a plebiscite on any new taxes to pay for transit projects and later said the government wouldn’t get involved in promoting a Yes vote.

NATIONAL NEWS Refusal to accredit law school upheld THE CANADIAN PRESS

TORONTO — An Ontario court has upheld the Ontario law society’s refusal to accredit a B.C. Christian university’s yet-to-open law school.

Trinity Western University had asked the Divisional Court in Ontario for a judicial review of the Law Society of Upper Canada’s decision, but the court dismissed the application Thursday.

The university’s covenant forbids sexual intimacy outside heterosexual marriage, which has led to similar legal battles for the university in other provinces.

The cases pit religious freedoms against samesex equality rights, with each side saying one is discriminating against the other.

Three judges wrote that the law society’s decision to deny accreditation carefully weighed the school’s right to freedom of religion versus the students’ rights to equal opportunity.

“We conclude that the respondent did engage in a proportionate balancing of the charter rights that were engaged by its decision and its decision cannot, therefore, be found to be unreasonable,’’ the judges wrote.

The key component of the case involved the university’s covenant that includes requiring students to abstain from gossip, obscene language, prejudice, harassment, lying, cheating, stealing, pornography, drunkenness and sexual intimacy “that violates the sacredness of marriage between a man and a woman.’’

The judges slammed the nature of the covenant, calling it discriminatory despite the university’s statements it is an open and accepting school.

The law society said it is pleased with the court’s decision.

The university can still open a law school, but its graduates wouldn’t be eligible to be called to the bar in Ontario.

Trinity Western said it will appeal the Ontario court’s decision.

In British Columbia, the B.C. Law Society voted not to recognize the university’s law school graduates and the provincial government revoked its support for the proposed law school.

TORONTO — The past week has seen several threats made against Canadian airliners.

The disruptions to four WestJet flights and one Air Canada plane left passengers scrambling as airlines dealt with halted operations and route diversions.

Although each threat proved to be a false alarm, police are investigating and experts are taking notice.

How do airlines typically respond when threats occur?

While individual protocols may very among airlines, McKeogh said the basic approach is the same — every threat must be taken seriously.

“As soon as they find out about a threat of this nature, they relay it to the flight in question, or sometimes all flights that are airborne, and those flights will then divert to the nearest suitable airport,’’ he said. This wasn’t always the case, however.

Airlines, he said, used to have much more discretion to assess individual situations.

“In the past, they’ve made an educated guess and maybe said, ‘No, we won’t do anything about this,’’’ he said.

“I don’t think you’re going to see much ‘No, we won’t do anything about it’ anymore.’’

If someone is caught making a threat, what legal consequences can they expect?

Christine Duhaime, a counter-terrorism

lawyer with Duhaime Law, said even an unsubstantiated threat can trigger very serious penalties.

Even a hoax can result in jail time, she said, since the perpetrator’s actions trigger real practical and economic consequences.

She said sending threats would be seen as consistent with terrorist efforts and tactics to attack critical infrastructure.

“Those attacks are either going to be real, or will surface as these did, with threats for which no real physical attack occurs,’’ Duhaime said in an email.

“They are attacks nonetheless, because they are intended to cause economic harm to the private sector, debilitate critical infrastructure and drive up costs for counterterrorism programs in the West.’’

Williams said the Canadian government’s recent introduction of tougher anti-terrorism

laws suggests anyone behind such threats shouldn’t expect to get off lightly.

“This is a very serious federal, criminal offence and I think will be treated very harshly if and when they catch the individual,’’ he said.

So what do we know about the current string of threats?

Very little.

The RCMP did not return calls seeking request for comment.

WestJet spokesman Robert Palmer said the rash of threats has triggered “rumours and speculation’’ that the airline is not willing to comment on.

“We will continue to work closely with law enforcement to find those responsible.

“Safety remains our top priority and we will continue to be vigilant to keep our guests and our crews safe,’’ he said.

oving stresses us all out.

But, for some people, it is more stressful than for others.

Most artists find moving from one studio to another disruptive, not only physically, but emotionally as well.

Pablo Picasso said, “We’re constantly moving dust from one place to another, only to have it replaced by more dust — entropy always wins.”

Perhaps he was talking about the energy and work that must go into maintaining a creative space.

There is no art without it.

Artist studios are like creative havens of joy and inspiration for the artistic mind.

The cluttered nature of the artist’s environment is filled with different shapes and colours that can divine creativity and random thought processes.

ist’s mind is hardwired.

Artists must be able to find and create a space that can physically hold their ideas and creations.

When an artist’s space is destroyed or moved, the artist will often go through a period of creative destruction or deconstruction, in which their thoughts and mental connections are pulled apart like a Lego toy and reassembled elsewhere in a different pattern.

The mind needs time to readjust.

This is when the artist will set up another space and propel their aesthetic meters to the

Collecting can be a big part of this.

It can be collecting thoughts, ideas, visual records or snippets of conversation.

All of these trivial and random pieces of life are then filed away in the mind or studio and used later in a visual interpretation of something wonderful or terrible.

It doesn’t matter, as long as the inspiration makes a connection and has meaning to the artist and, ideally, to the outside community.

It takes time for an artist to regroup from a studio move, even up to a full year. But, once the art begins again, it is always different.

The new art work, called a body of work, is seen as a good thing.

It describes growth and movement and change.

Movement is life and it is the same for art. Artists are compelled to create, it’s not a choice and it is like breathing.

If an artist cannot create, an emotional death can occur which can be followed by a physical one.

One thing is for sure — change happens.

It happens all the time and there is nothing we can do to stop the flow. There is a river of progress that runs through our communities.

There is always room and time for another breath of light and a song of creative expression.

It is the beauty of being human.

The Whistler Children’s Festival is set to return to Whistler Olympic Plaza on July 10-12, 2015 for a weekend of family-focused festivities. Young people will experience and experiment with art through immersion in a range of arts disciplines. Through fifteen free activities, more than thirty live performances, ninety paid workshops, and a crew of roving entertainers, festival attendees will be captivated, inspired and encouraged to participate in every way possible.

Lucie Lareau, senior programmer of the Whistler Children’s Festival, feels that an immersive approach to the arts is vital, as it allows for the development of important transferable skills. “We are physical beings, but we are also creative beings,” says Lareau. “Through creativity, we learn how to think critically and solve problems. Through exploration, we learn how to accept newness and expand our boundaries. Through ex-

posure to other cultures, we learn about patience, acceptance and communication.”

As Whistler’s longest-running community festival, this annual event has evolved over the past thirty-two years, most notably with a 2013 venue change from its original Creekside location to Whistler Olympic Plaza, where foot traffic increased and overall festival capacity doubled.

While its size and location have changed, its ultimate goal of delivering a culturally diverse and lifestyle-inclusive event has remained the same.

Each day of the festival will begin with a “Greeting of the Day” presented by the Squamish Lil’Wat Cultural Centre.

The lineup of live performers will include Juno-nominated Treehouse TV stars Bobs & Lolo, Whistler’s own Ira Pettle, and more than twenty upand-coming artists. Free activities will include traditional Japanese storytelling, the patio stones workshop which has been part of the Whistler Children’s Festival since its inception, and two collaborative art installations.

“Through these installa-

tions, kids will witness their contribution to two evolving pieces,” says Lareau of the collaborative art. “The focus here is on the process of creation, rather than on the end result.”

For the older kids, a new mentoring program will see two candidates become, “media for a day,” covering the festival as accredited media and experiencing an arts-based workplace setting. Under the guidance of their mentor, they’ll be encouraged to discover hidden aptitudes and even consider potential career paths.

“It’s very important that we support young people in their creative endeavours, and allow them to experiment with ideas in a safe environment,” explains Lareau. “The Whistler Children’s Festival is intended to provide this opportunity. It is a unique celebration of creativity in all its forms and colours.”

RELAY FOR LIFE MISSES TARGET, AT RISK OF FALLING SHORT OF VITAL FUNDS The Canadian Cancer Society’s 20th annual Relay For Life was shut down early on June 20 at Hillside Stadium due to a major rain and wind storm, leaving the society at risk of falling short of its fundraising goals.

“All of the volunteers and teams had put in so much work and were looking forward to another great event,” said Jenn Harbaruk, community giving co-ordinator in Kamloops.

“Our goal was to hit $75,000 this year and we were barely able to reach the $50,000 mark before being forced to shut down four hours into a 12-hour event.”

The storm that blew in at about 3:30 p.m. on Jun3 20 brought with it 65 km/h winds, lightning and a torrential downpour.

“Fortunately everybody got out safely, but shutting down early also means that we didn’t get to see the event through and raise the funds we need for cancer research and support programs to help people in Kamloops facing cancer,” Harbaruk said.

The Canadian Cancer Society offers a financial assistance program that helps pay for travel and accommodation during cancer treatment. Financial assistance is donor-driven through events such as Relay for Life.

Those who want to help the Canadian Cancer Society meet its fundraising goal can do so by donating to Relay For Life Kamloops online at relayforlife.ca/kamloops or by mail or in person at 214-141 Victoria St. Supporters can also

donate at this weekend’s Luminary Ceremony, which will be held in Prince Charles Park tomorrow from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Harbaruk said the Luminary Ceremony celebrates survivors and those on a cancer journey and remembers those lost to the disease.

Luminaries will be on sale, a table will be open for donations and attendees can take part in the Luminary Light Up and Walk.

“The need for support programs is more urgent than ever,” Harbaruk said, noting the Southern Interior region, of which Kamloops is a major centre, is the largest user of the financial-

assistance program, serving almost 50 per cent of the total 3,184 clients and using more than 50 per cent of the total $1.3 million distributed across the province in the past five years.

“Our region is the biggest user of the financial support program for several reasons,” Harbaruk said.

“We’re very geographically dispersed and patients often have to travel long distances for cancer treatment.

This is certainly the case in the Kamloops area due to our distance from major cancer treatment centres in B.C., such as Kelowna and Vancouver.

“If we don’t hit our fundraising goal at Relay, we have less resources to help our community members going through treatment.”

t is one of those perfect days — brilliant sunshine, powderblue skies and a soft breeze that carries the scent of summer on its breath.

Along with a group of friends, I board The Native, a pretty paddlewheeler moored on the Fraser River alongside the New Westminster boardwalk.

The scene along the waterfront is lively: A whiskered old man, hat at his feet, plays Up A Lazy River on his mouth harmonica.

A teenager on skates whizzes past me; a woman in a business suit, cellphone to her ear, strides along briskly; a chubby toddler poses for his parents, who coo to him in Chinese.

As we settle down on the boat, a horn signals our departure.

The captain’s voice booms over the PA system as he welcomes us aboard and the paddles begin to churn.

Our hostesses bustle around, taking orders for the bar, and a buzz of animated conversation floats across the deck as we cast off on our two-and-a-halfhour cruise upstream.

At first glance, the Fraser River is muscular — an industrial waterway shouldering log booms, tugs and barges to the lumber mills lining its route

But, the Fraser is much more than that.

It weaves through the lives of the 2.4-million people who live and work along its 1,375-kilometre route from the rugged mountains deep in the heart of British Columbia to the delta, where it empties into the Gulf of Georgia.

It nourishes a unique ecology of plant, fish and bird life, and has been a partner

in the province’s history and development over the past two centuries.

As the scenery unfolds, so does the history of the Fraser River — the old Gold Rush days, (when there were more paddlewheelers along the Fraser than on the Mississippi) are gone, but the Fraser remains at the heart of B.C’s economy, the lumber industry in particular.

Logs braided into raft-like booms lie

against the shoreline and cheeky little boom boats dance around them, nudging errant sticks into place.

Self-important tugs draw barges piled high with woodchips or sawdust — perhaps not as shiny as nuggets or gold dust but, in today’s marketplace, almost as valuable.

We move smoothly under the first of several bridges that span the river — Surrey’s Skybridge which, from this angle, looks like a giant harp with its strings aslant against the sky.

Just beyond is the venerable old Pattullo Bridge, opened in 1937.

Its orange Meccanoconstruction-like archway is a familiar sight to commuters who drive its lanes every day as they stream into New Westminster from Surrey.

Also along our journey is the century-old Fraser River Swing Bridge that still carries freight and passenger trains. We edge through it’s narrow port-side corridor.

Breaking into open water past the bridge, the river is a pastiche of impressions.

An osprey sits on a piling, its feathers ruffled by the breeze.

A speedboat buzzes past us like an angry hornet. A

goods train worms its way along the distant Surrey shoreline.

Hugging the bank, a log salvage barge, its crane outstretched like some ungainly pterodactyl’s beak, retrieves an errant deadhead.

Wild grass and alder and cottonwood trees doze gently on small islands in mid-channel and, up ahead, the Coastal Mountains smudge the sky in blue and grey silhouettes.

Powder-puff clouds drift lazily overhead.

We help ourselves to a buffet of cold cuts and salads as the gates to what was once the B.C. Penitentiary come into view on our left.

No longer a grim

fortress, this has been transformed into a romantic restaurant — Dublin Castle complete with fairytale-like columns and ramparts; Coquitlam’s Mary Hill lies further inland, its deforested slopes and jumble of tightly packed buildings a scar against the hillside.

The historic Fraser Mills lumberyard and buildings that existed along the river’s edge are folded away into the past now. In its place, I’m told, a residential subdivision may take shape in the next few years.

Past TimberWest’s log sort area, the new Port Mann Bridge looms against the sky.

We glide under its mammoth concrete arches and, just beyond its stanchions, the old bridge is a crumbling mess of concrete and steel rods.

Now in the process of demolition, it will soon be the stuff of history, of faded photograph albums and anecdotal tales told

by Fraser Valley oldtimers.

But, the Fraser River endures, an inscrutable witness to the passage of time and change — coupled to B.C.’s past and forever linked to its future.
