Soccer man prepares to take on world Special Olympics World Games loom large for Langford athlete

It’s just a practice, but the 38-year-old athlete is as vocal and energized on the field as if it’s a real game. With a hearty smile a fixture on his face, he is ready to compete in the Special Olympics World Games. “It is going to be a little overwhelming for me. I will be a little nervous, but it will be an honour representing my country,” Cheverie says. “I am just going to go over there and make my province and country proud of me and give it all I can do and just have fun and hopefully come back with a medal.” The Langford resident makes his way to Los Angeles later this summer for the biggest sporting event for athletes with Arnold Lim mental disabilities, and one of the biggest Reporting events in the world. Approximately 7,000 athletes and 3,000 coaches representing 177 countries, along with 30,000 volunteers, will descend upon the “City of Angels” for the Games, set for July 25 to Aug. 2. The competition will see the most participants in a sporting event in Los Angeles since the Olympic Games in 1984. “I am really excited. It’s my first one, so it’s going to be a good experience,” Cheverie says. “The best part of being an athlete is going out, competing and doing my best … helping fellow athletes I know, and keep competing to my ability – just having fun.” The multi-talented athlete participates in baseball, soccer, snowshoe, track, floor hockey, 10-pin bowling and five-on-five soccer, for which he was selected to the Special Olympics national team.

Jeremy Cheverie of Langford is the only Vancouver Island player who will represent Canada on the men’s soccer team competing at the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles later this month. But he’s equally adept off the field, says Special Olympics spokesperson and coach Kim Perkins. A recent high-profile award nomination is a perfect representation of who Jeremy is, she adds. “The Spirit of Sport award is presented to an athlete that exemplifies the true meaning of sportsmanship, shows dedication, enthusiasm and gives their best effort,” she says. “Without a doubt, Jeremy exemplifies all those qualities and traits. He consistently is always the most gracious athlete on the field, he congratulates all participants, even those he is competing against.” Perkins says Cheverie, who works at the Staples in Langford when he isn’t training, has been a tireless fundraiser, teammate and friend, even bringing back knowledge from high-performance training camps to

his friends in Victoria with a genuine interest in seeing others around him succeed. She says Cheverie deserves the recognition he is getting today. “Jeremy is the only athlete from (Greater) Victoria who is going to be participating in the international games this summer. We’re very proud of him for accomplishing that; it’s a big accomplishment. I have no doubt he will succeed both athletically at the Games, and personally. I think it is wonderful for Victoria to have such a wonderful person representing us there at the games.” For more information on the World Games, visit la2015.org. It shouldn’t take long to move from the voting booth to the bargaining table. The municipal employees who work at the West Shore RCMP Detachment - but are paid by the City of Langford - are heading to the negotiation stage as soon as possible to begin work on a contract. The 19 employees, who perform administrative, clerical and other duties, voted on June 15 to join Local 50 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees. CUPE Local 50 President John Burrows said they have issued

written notice to begin negotiations as soon as dates can be worked out with Langford. “We are excited to represent a new group of employees and are hopeful we achieve the first collective agreement in short order,” Burrows said. He said there has been no discussion regarding the employees at Langford City Hall. Langford Mayor Stew Young said he hasn’t heard of any issues with municipal staff at the RCMP during his 22 years as mayor, and his focus remains on adding municipal staff and RCMP members to serve the community better. The Langford staff at the detachment are under the direction of the RCMP, he said. “We pay them, but they work for the RCMP. Moving forward, we want to concentrate on adding staff

and officers to make this community as safe and as crime free as we can.” Langford chief administrative office Jim Bowden said he doesn’t believe there will be any impact from the decision by the staff at the RCMP to unionize. “We need to provide those services to the RCMP whether we’re union or non-union,” he said. Nor does Bowden foresee any changes regarding the staff at Langford City Hall. “We believe management and staff have an excellent relationship.” CUPE Local 50 also represents inside and outside workers at the City of Victoria, Victoria Police Board, the Victoria branch of the BCSPCA, Gorge Vale Golf Club, Royal Oak Burial Park and the United Way of Greater Victoria. news@goldstreamgazette.com

Homeless community will benefit from man’s decision Langford man who turned in money to RCMP turns down the public’s financial help Rick Stiebel News Gazette staff

What began as a desire to repay an act of kindness morphed into something much more for West Shore RCMP Const. Alex Berube. After a homeless man in Langford returned $2,400 he found earlier this month, Berube was on a mission to try and find the man to let him know that his act had been acknowledged with national media attention, and a fund had been set up by Mike Kelly on the social media site Victoria Buzz to reward him with an equivalent amount. “We all take our jobs personally to a certain extent,” said Berube, who spent a fair amount of his free time to trying to find the Good Samaritan. “I’m not the first guy to spend some time off-duty trying to do

the right thing. I felt it was important to let him know that people had really stepped up to help him out.” When Berube, the detachment’s media relations officer, found the man on Millstream Road last week, he was careful to convey that he wasn’t in any trouble. Berube explained to him that about $5,000 had been collected, with a significant portion earmarked for the man and the rest for Our Place Society, which offers support for homeless people in Victoria. “I was totally surprised when he turned it down and said to give it all to Our Place,” Berube said. “I suggested he think about it overnight and set up a time to talk about it at the detachment the next day.” The man, who is in his 60s and wishes to remain anonymous, is originally from Langford and has been living on the streets for a long time. Berube even offered the man his watch to ensure he had no problems with the timing of the appointment, but he politely declined. He came in the next day and talked with Berube for 30 minutes, but remained steadfast in

his decision that all of the money should go to Our Place. At the end of the conversation, he asked if there was something Berube may be able to help him with – finding a job. Berube contacted Kelly immediately to see if he could spread the

word through Victoria Buzz. “I really hope he can get a job,” Berube said. “It’s a gratifying part of our work when we can help do something for someone that has a positive impact on their life. He’s a great example of a very humble person who’s trying to pay it for-

The National Hockey League is coming to Colwood. The puck drops on Sept. 21 at The Q Centre as the Vancouver Canucks take-on the San Jose Sharks in a special pre-season exhibition game. Back in April, the Panorama Recreation Centre in North Saanich was announced as the national grand prize winner of Kraft Hockeyville 2015, receiving $100,000 to fund arena improvements and the option to host a NHL pre-season game. However, after considering a number of factors, such as seating and rink safety specifications, a push was made to find a different venue for the event. Back in April, a number of offi-

cials from the NHL, NHL Players’ Association and Kraft Hockeyville toured four locations, the Panorama, the Juan de Fuca arena, The Q Centre, and the Save-onFoods Memorial Centre. The decision was made by Kraft and NHL officials to move the pre-season game to The Q Centre and was

announced last week. “We’re thrilled to be able to host this event,” said Wade Davies, manager of operations for West Shore Parks and Recreation, which will host the NHL for a total of five days to allow for arena setup and changes to rink boards advertising and ice logos.

The B.C. Hockey League’s Victoria Grizzlies are on the road at that time, which worked out perfectly, Davies said. Even if the Victoria Shamrocks wind up hosting the Mann Cup lacrosse championship, it would be over by the time the arena needs to be turned over, he added.

Asked why the game was not slotted in at the larger Save-OnFoods Memorial Centre, Davies said his understanding of the situation was that the organizers “wanted to keep it more of a small town feel.” Exact ticket details have yet to be released, but the North Saanich Local Organizing Committee and Kraft Hockeyville announced that tickets will be distributed lottery-style for the big game and the morning practices at The Q Centre, all of which will be free. “As details are finalized,” reads a Panorama Facebook post, “the LOC will keep all the community up to date with the planned events surrounding the game.” Several related events are also being planned for the North Saanich area and the Panorama. kengqvist@goldstreamgazette.com

Belmont football scholarship returns to Pastro family Katherine Engqvist News Gazette staff

Rein Eberle may have passed away more than 12 years ago, but his legacy has not been forgotten. As an avid volunteer in the community, Eberle was passionate about youth sports, especially football. He served on the board for the Victoria Rebels (now known as the Westshore Rebels), an organization both his sons played for while they attended Belmont secondary. “He believed in football players advancing to the next level and advancing their education,” said Elise Pastro, current Rebels president. “Both Rein and (his wife) Lorna were actively involved with the Rebels.” After his death in 2003, the $1,000 Rein Eberle football scholarship was established for a graduating Belmont student. To be eligible, a student must not only be an active

player or volunteer in football and demonstrate athletic promise and superior skill, they must be continuing on to postsecondary education. Pastro said the Eberles was determined to keep a youth football league running, even with all of the complications and problems that came up. “They believed in keeping that team available for their boys,” she said of the couple. When Eberle wasn’t tossing around the pigskin, he was an active participant in education, spending 20 years as the personnel manager for the Sooke School District. This is where his path crossed for the first time with Pastro, who was an educational assistant at the time. Her younger son, Matt, was awarded this year’s Eberle scholarship, and was the second of Pastro’s boys to win the award, following brother Chris, who has played the past few seasons

with the Rebels. Matt, who turned down an offer to play for the University of Alberta next season, came back from a dehabilitating knee injury that required reconstructive surgery and cost him his grade 11 year of play to finish his grade 12 year playing for Belmont. Instead of heading off to Alberta, he chose to stay closer to home this fall and signed-on to play for the Rebels while attending Camosun College. “As a single mom this was a significant help for both my boys,” Pastro said. Much like in Eberle’s time, she added, volunteering is still an integral part of their program. “It’s everything. Some would say that I expect them to volunteer too much.” As for the players, she said, the team’s coaching staff and volunteer board members are teaching them how to be contributing members of society.

“Volunteering is such a random act of kindness that is just unmeasurable.” The players don’t just volunteer for football-related activities. They recently covered everything from selling 50-50 tickets to scorekeeping at a championship soccer game, giving parents a chance to sit down and watch their children, cheering them on to a win in the big game.

Feeling grateful to be Canadian Whether you’re relaxing alone or with family today (July 1), celebrating our country’s 148th birthday at events around the West Shore, or working to provide a service, Canada Day offers a chance to reflect on what it’s like to be Canadian. The ability to choose where you live, who you hang out with and what lawful activities you engage in, not to mention the fact we live in a generally peaceful nation, are freedoms we take for granted. Sure, daily life presents its challenges. But in Canada we still have less restrictions on movement, how we express our beliefs on all manner of subjects, and other general facets of life than residents of countries ruled by oppressive leaders. Like all of us as individuals, Canada is not perfect. We are becoming known for our less-than-stellar environmental commitments, are dealing with the aftermath of our shoddy treatment of our aboriginal people, and disagree on where or whether to place oil pipelines to the Pacific Coast. We are criticized at times for our global role to help prevent the spread of terrorist groups and are sometimes knocked for not putting enough money into international aid programs for countries far less well off than ourselves. Canadians tend to do a lot of navel-gazing, comparing ourselves to the rest of the world, especially our neighbours immediately to the south. It’s relatively easy to come up with negative examples of why we should be grateful to live in Canada – we don’t have the same level of gun violence as the U.S., aren’t in danger of being taken over by a large neighbour as with Ukraine, or in a major financial crisis as in Greece. Rather than spinning such comparisons to put ourselves in a good light, why not choose to appreciate the great people who are around us every day and make Canada the special place it is. We remember the gallantry of those who fought keep Canada and its allies free from tyranny and fear, and admire the people who volunteer their time to work with our kids or seniors. We appreciate our friends and those who stand beside us in times of personal crisis. While the word “thankful” is something we tend to hear more in October, we have a lot to be grateful for all year living in this country. The freedom to choose what we make of our lives has to be at or near the top of the list. So today, consider how you feel about living in Canada. LETTERS High density will ruin Colwood’s charm Re: Listen to public, Colwood resident implores city council (Letters, June 3) I fully agree with Debbie Cotter and her take on Colwood council’s mandate to push through the Metchosin and Painter road high-density development. They are only interested in the mighty buck and high-density living for our naturally peaceful area. The rest of the disturbing news for Colwood is Heatherbell Road, off Lagoon Road, where continued construction on Ocean Grove will start with big trucks, flaggers and delays. Then there is the three acres of land on Heatherbell, where a developer wants to build 25 houses. Last week I received a letter from Pacific Landing and they want to build another development on the Coast Collective Grounds and are apparently in the planning stages. This quiet, peaceful area is going to be a total wreck for years to come and who has to pay the price? The homeowners who pay the taxes and voted in the current council members. We need to make them aware that the amount of vehicles

on Heatherbell, Lagoon and Metchosin roads is going to be way more than this sweet, quaint area can handle. If the development on Metchosin and Painter road gets pushed through, our children, bikers, walkers and wildlife will be in constant danger. Royal Bay secondary will have Grade 12 students driving to school while younger kids will be walking to school. This area is not a high-density living area. It is too far from grocery stores, shops, activities, so we all drive and that won’t change. The air quality and the amount of vehicles on these little paths we call roads will be huge. Council pushes Solar Colwood, natural forests, natural plantings and pristine beaches, then they become selfabsorbed and hypocrites so the city can make more money. They might as well put in paved walkways, a wharf, boat launch and a pub restaurant down at the Lagoon beach to properly care for the Colwood taxpayers. Why is the communication between homeowners and council so poor? The Colwood city website is so incomplete that one can’t look anything up

because it is just not there. I called city hall and they told me that Colwood council loves high density living. Tell the Colwood mayor ‘no’ to high-density living. Tell council that our kids matter and to stop shoving their plans down our throats. Tanya Clarke Colwood

Photo didn’t represent active city seniors Re: Langford one of B.C.’s most “age-friendly “ communities As a senior living in Langford, I was interested to read this article by Mike Davies. I am happy that I can walk to most of the services I need. However, I was disappointed that the photo representing seniors was such a stereotype. I walk weekly with a group of seniors, many in their seventies with no walkers, around Langford and surrounding parks and trails and we manage five to seven kilometres. James, the only teacher remaining from Barrie’s three years at the school, said it was a “real thrill” for the students to spend some time with the Colorado Avalanche defenceman.

involved in,” Barrie said. “My father (former NHL player Len Barrie) is one of the most generous people you will ever meet, and my parents have always stressed the importance of giving back and helping out. I’m just trying to do my part.” During his address to the students, Tyson Barrie emphasized that all things are possible if you are willing to work hard and believe in yourself. He noticed the day before that although the school hockey team’s name had changed from Raptors to Eagles a few years ago, the jerseys still sported the old dinosaur logo. When he told the students that he was going to replace the old jerseys and furnish the school with some new sports equipment, the gym erupted in cheers. After the assembly, James summed up Barrie’s talk by saying the hockey star has given a lot of hope to kids to work toward their dreams. Barrie, 23, also brought the gold medal he won at the IIHF World Hockey Championships last year, adding that it was one of the highlights of his career. “Any time you get to represent your country, it’s a no brainer for me,” said the former Juan de Fuca Grizzlies minor hockey player, who plans to spend the summer in Victoria. “It was so much fun, and a great group of guys. Double Vision

The sudden onset of double vision is a frightening experience. Double vision occurs when the two eyes don’t point at the same object. Each eye sends an image to the brain which attempts to superimpose the two images. When this works we have depth perception, when it doesn’t we have “diplopia” or double vision. Some people experience occasional diplopia when they are tired or taking certain medications. This occurs because the central control of the muscles used to align the eyes is compromised. This condition, while a nuisance, disappears when the cause is remedied. Sometimes diplopia occurs for no apparent reason. Possible causes include a stroke, a tumor, diabetes or multiple sclerosis. It is important to have a medical evaluation to ensure nothing untoward has occurred. Often normal vision returns gradually. Spectacles with prism can be helpful in aligning the images until the diplopia has resolved or stabilized. If you suffer from double vision, be sure to have a thorough examination by an optometrist regularly.
