Watering lawns will be prohibited in Abbotsford and Mission starting on Friday, as Stage 3 water restrictions go into effect.

Stage 3 brings a complete ban on all lawn sprinkling; no new lawn sprinkling permits will be issued; and non-re-circulating fountains will be prohibited. Residents can still hand-water flower and vegetable gardens.

With the hot weather, average daily water demand went up 25 per cent in June compared to last year.

City staff will be patrolling and educating the public about water use reduction if they see people still watering, after which there will be a warning and then a ticket.

Abbotsford hit a new temperature record for June 27, with a high of 32.3 C last Saturday. The previous record was in 2000, at 31.1 C. Sunday cooled slightly with a high of 30.9 C. Abbotsford’s all-time high for June is 34.1 C. According to meteorologist Matt MacDonald recent overnight temperatures in Abbotsford are sitting close to 10 degrees above normal, at 16-17 C.

Home invasion on Robson

Victim was a 62-year-old woman

A 62-year-old woman who was taking out her garbage became the victim of a home invasion Friday morning in east Abbotsford.

The incident took place at about 7:30 a.m. at a home in the 3600 block of Robson Drive, located south of Bateman Road and north of Laburnum Avenue.

Const. Ian MacDonald said the woman had briefly left her home to take out some trash when she was confronted by two masked suspects.

They forced her back inside the home and restrained her while demanding cash.

Two other suspects arrived on the scene, and much of the home was ransacked.

According to the victim, the suspects were all men and were armed, MacDonald said.

The culprits eventually left the residence, and the victim was able to free herself and call police. She was taken to hospital for the treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

MacDonald said witnesses indicated that a brown Chrysler sedan was seen in the area and near the home in the past few weeks.

Investigators are now wanting to speak to anyone who saw any suspicious people, vehicles or activities in the area.

He said the response required about 12 career firefighters and 27 auxiliary.

“I know the guys worked very hard, and with the heat, it would be very taxing on them.”

The pageant prides itself in its recognition of diversity amongst women and acceptance for the transgendered community. It acts as a developmental program for young women and even has a category for married women, the Mrs. BC Pageant.

The charity for the Miss BC Pageant is the Cops for Cancer Tour of the Canadian Cancer Society. Since 2007, the Miss BC Pageant has raised over $225,000 for the cause.

City prepares for more growth Mayor addresses issues before crowd of 400 Tyler OLSEN Abbotsford News

Mayor Henry Braun focused on the future during his first State of the City address and inaugural Mayor’s Breakfast Friday morning at Tradex.

Speaking in front of around 400 people, Braun said Abbotsford will see substantial change both within the next three years of his term and beyond.

Braun said Abbotsford must embrace its role as a “regional hub” and change with the world around it.

“We are planning for what the city will look like when we hit 200,000 people,” he said, although he added that there is no time frame when that population target may be achieved.

Braun repeatedly spoke of the importance of the city’s new official community plan and promised that officials won’t approve projects that go against it.

“Whatever we do,” he said, “It will align with the OCP.” On homelessness, Braun said he looks forward to the day when every resident had a bed to go home to. He also anticipated groundbreaking within the “next month or two” on a new supportive housing project.

Braun also referenced five-kilometres of carbon fibre cable that has been laid over the border into Abbotsford, and which he said will give the city a competitive advantage when it comes to attracting companies that require high-tech facilities.

“It’s tremendous value once this is up and running,” he said.

Although the city is in the midst of long dry spell that has prompted some concern about

Lower Mainland water sources over the next 12 months, Braun noted that consumption had decreased significantly since Abbotsford voters rejected a plan to build a P3 project four years ago.

“Do we need a new water source?

Absolutely, but I think we’re 10 years away.”

Many of the items in the speech were carryovers from his election campaign, including when he spoke about the need to work better with local businesses and those working with the city on developments.

“We’re a big city,” he said. “We need to act like a big city.”

On Point Why do gays want to fly a “pride” flag at city hall?

Some bemused straight people would like to know. Mostly, those would be tolerant types, who find it puzzling that such a statement needs to be made at all. Society accepts gay people nowadays, right?

Part of the answer is illustrated by the response to the stories we’ve recently carried on the request, and council’s approval.

After less than five days, our Facebook story post received nearly 25,000 reaches, and about 200 comments, some of them so vicious – using words like “fags” and “homos” – we took them down.

Clearly, this is still a very controversial issue, with the aggravating factor, of course, that the mayor and council have shown their

support for the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) community by allowing them to fly their flag during pride celebrations later this month.

More than a few people – including locals Richard and Gerda Peachey – have voiced their opposition to involvement by city hall in what they consider to be immoral matters.

Most would argue that being LGBTQ has nothing to do with morality.

The Peacheys, feel otherwise. And you might not like their position, grounded in their stout faith beliefs.

However, they pose interesting questions. They make us stop and think. Should community facilities host events that offend some people – like lingerie football or Taboo Sex Shows? Should government approve activities or celebrations that some find immoral?

The answers may be obvious to you, but

dialogue and debate is good. It’s the mark of an open, democratic society. Unfortunately, some people feel it necessary to attack and denigrate the Peacheys for their opinion – and that’s just as wrong as persecuting gay people.

They are completely within their rights to express an opinion, and to challenge public policy decisions.

At the same time, I’d say some of the opposition voiced by Facebook commenters is downright silly, such as saying the flag perverts the “real” meaning of the rainbow, i.e. a colourful natural phenomenon, and/or message from God. Breaking news: “Gays hijack rainbow!”

Call out the colour spectrum terminology police.

Others suggest pride celebrations teach our children that the LGBTQ orientation and lifestyle is “normal.”

What it teaches them is that Canada, the

The flag represents inclusiveness. And it’s hardly in your face. Not, for instance, like door-to-door evangelism ...

Then there’s the specious argument: “Why is there no ‘straight’ flag? Straight people are being discriminated against!”

More breaking news. The straight “flag” is being flown 24/7. You aren’t treated differently or persecuted because you’re straight.

Some members of the LBGTQ community feel they haven’t achieved equality yet, and are willing to call attention to the issue with parades and flags. That carries a downside, provoking those who would prefer gays to get back in their closets and stay there.

But neither is it right that fear of intolerance should keep people silent and invisible.

So, fly the flag for a few days. March if you are inclined. Far better to be proud than fearful.

As a good friend of mine likes to say, you’re welcome in my village.

As a resident of Abbotsford, it has come to my attention that city council approved the raising of the Fraser Valley Pride Flag at city hall for the week of July 13-20.

Though an LGBTQ lifestyle is legal, this does not mean that it should be supported by the city of Abbotsford. Why should the LGBTQ community get special treatment? As residents, it is time to speak up now and let our leaders know that this is not acceptable in our community.

When leaders direct us down a path which we know is not right, we have the duty to speak up and to defend the truth that a traditional marriage is the very foundation of every healthy society.

Disgusted by letter I’m disgusted that you would publish a letter to the editor like the one on June 19 criticizing Abbotsford city council’s decision to fly the Fraser Valley Pride flag during the July 13-20 Fraser Valley Pride Celebrations.

Cities like Abbotsford and many other cities realize that humans have very diverse lives.

Whether its religion, cultural or LGBTQ issues we all have the right to be who we are.

Celebrating different cultural events groups and lifestyles is a good thing for everyone. Fear is what brings these type of letters about instead of understanding diversity and celebrating it.

A man who was found with child pornography while crossing the border from the U.S. into Abbotsford in 2011 has been given a six-month jail sentence.

video and written electronic material of child pornography, contrary to section 159 of the Customs Act. This case dates back to Sept. 14, 2011, when Ellis was returning to Canada through the AbbotsfordHuntingdon port of entry and was referred for secondary examination.

Border services officers examined his electronic media and discovered suspected child pornography. The officer seized the electronic devices and arrested Ellis.

The case was referred to the Canada Border Services Agency’s (CBSA) criminal investigations section (CIS), which identified a total of 105 written stories, nine videos, and 61 still images of child pornography belonging to Ellis.

So far this year in the Pacific region, border services officers have made 31 suspected child porn seizures, including 19 at the Vancouver International Airport.

“We are committed to preventing this prohibited material from crossing our borders and protecting the vulnerable in society,” said Harald Wuigk, assistant director of the Pacific region’s CIS. Anyone with information about suspicious cross-border or illegal activity is encouraged to call the CBSA Border Watch toll-free line at 1-888502-9060.

A man who caught a thief in action has received a commendation from the Abbotsford Police Board.

Jasbir Singh Kooner was recognized with a certificate of appreciation during the board meeting on Tuesday.

Kooner arrived at his workplace at about 6:40 a.m. on March 6, 2014 and, as he entered the main automotive garage area, he saw a person running away and realized that a break-in had occurred.

Kooner saw the thief run to a hole that had been punched out of the lower panel of one of the garage doors at the back of the workshop, and immediately opened the bay door and chased after the culprit.

He chased the suspect down a catwalk, between several buildings and around numerous businesses.

After running several blocks, the thief dropped the duffel bag he was carrying and continued to run away.

The bag contained several pieces of equipment – valued at more than $10,000 – recently purchased by Kooner’s workplace.

Kooner lost sight of the robber, but called 911 and provided police with a detailed description.

Officers were immediately dispatched to the area and were quickly able to locate the thief and arrest him.

The man is now before the courts on several charges.

“Your keen observation, clear thinking and quick response proved to be invaluable in allowing the police members to locate and arrest the thief,” Mayor Henry Braun said in

For the second straight year, an Abbotsford hockey product has been scooped up in the first round of NHL draft.

Noah Juulsen, 18, was selected by the Montreal Canadiens 26th overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft on June 26.

Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin said he was open to trading the teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first round pick but after noticing Juulsen in the stands, the decision to draft the young defenceman was solidified. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Since Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been in Montreal, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve drafted forwards in the first round,â&#x20AC;? Bergevin told media at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Fla. â&#x20AC;&#x153;[But] especially in our division, this is the kind of defenceman we need.

Juulsen was listed No. 22 among North American skaters in the final NHL Central Scouting rankings heading into the draft.

Schmidt is currently a free agent. She last played club soccer for Sky Blue FC in the National Women’s Soccer League, in 2013-14.

Most promising, though, was 20-year-old midfielder Ashley Lawrence who demonstrated she’s ready to take on a greater role in 2016 and beyond.

Other standout performances came from Kadeisha Buchanan, 19, and 26-year-old Allysha Chapman.

Buchanan, in particular, looks primed to anchor Canada’s defence for years to come. Both she and Lawrence will take the field July 11 for Canada’s U23 women’s soccer team at the Pan Am Games.

KLEISS, Otto May 28, 1935 - June 23, 2015 After battling cancer for 10 years Otto passed away peacefully in the company of his loving wife Kathy in Chilliwack General Hospital. Otto was born in Tiegenhof, Germany and immigrated to Canada in 1951.

He was able to celebrate his 80th birthday as well as Father’s Day surrounded by family and friends. He will be dearly missed by his children Beverly (Jeff), Rick (Wanda), Karen (Larry), and Vince, as well as his 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He will be remembered for his smile and his unique sense of humor.

He is survived by his wife Madeleine Hardin, his mother Jean Setters, sister Deb Setters,

his brother Barry Setters and many beloved nieces and their spouses in AB and BC. He was predeceased by his father Clint Setters. Bob never met a dog he didn’t like or a dog that didn’t like him. He was a bit more discerning with people and as a consequence had a small circle of family and friends who loved to be with this kind, thoughtful, teasing, loving man.

Marjory was born on January 12th, 1925 at home in Crossfield, Alberta to Alexander and Jane Gordon. Her siblings were Stella, Evan, Mabel, Alma and Lois. She was married on August 20th, 1948 to Vernon Bouck in Crossfield, Alberta.

They lived and worked on a farm in Carstairs, Alberta. They had 2 children, Brian Wesley and Joan Wendy. She was a Sunday school teacher in their church in Crossfield and a teacher in the public school in Carstairs. They moved to Abbotsford where they resided til death. They attended New Testament Baptist Church. Any gifts in lieu of flowers may be sent to New Testament Baptist Church at 5525 Gladwin Rd, Abbotsford, B.C. V4X 1X8.

Her greatest desire was to share the gospel of Christ with everyone she met and show His love to them.

WATERS, Karyn Karyn passed away peacefully on her birthday, June 16, 2015, at the age of 38 years. She had a strong spirit and battled cancer for more than a year to win every minute she could get with her family. Karyn is survived by her husband Chadwick, children Sebastian (8 years), Gwendolyn (5 years), and Josephine (18 months). Her passing is also mourned by her father Larry Eaglestone; sister Kelly Glass and husband Jacob; mother-inlaw Cheryl Corscadden; sisterin-law Danielle Kingma & her husband Bryan; sister-in-law Charlene Waters & her partner Cornelius Wheland; as well as nieces and nephews Mikiya, Marty, Billy, Colleen, Jules, Keira & Megan. She will also be missed by her many, amazing friends. Karyn was predeceased

by her mother Sandy in 2013.

Born in Miami, Manitoba on August 29th, 1919, Roy spent his early years in Manitoba with his eight siblings. He is survived by his sisters Evelyn and Margaret and his brother Lorne. He left school at an early age to help support the large family by working on farms and fishing on the lakes of Manitoba.

In 1941, Roy joined the Canadian Army. Upon his discharge, he settled on Vancouver Island where he lived for many years. It was here that he met the love of his life, Bernice (Bea). He and Bea were married in 1946 and would have celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary this year.

Roy was a man of many talents. He worked in mines, construction and was a vacuum cleaner salesperson. He worked as a circulation manager for many years for the Vancouver Sun, mainly in the Fraser Valley. He concluded his working career building houses on Vancouver Island.

For the past 27 years, Roy and Bea have lived in Abbotsford where they moved to be close to Bea’s sister and husband and children, Laura & Julie, who were like their daughters. Roy is also survived by many nephews and nieces to whom he was also very close.

Roy will be remembered as a man who loved people, and in turn, people loved him.

A celebration of Roy’s life will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on August 15th, 2015 at the Ramada Inn in Abbotsford.

Eric John Janzen was born in Choritza, Ukraine on July 2, 1941. As a child of wartime he had a tumultuous childhood. He and his family were evacuated from the Ukraine to Poland then to Germany and finally to the safety of Parguay in 1945 then to Canada in 1954 when he was 13. He graduated from the John Oliver High School in 1965 with distinction. He was granted acceptance to Harvard, but chose on University of British Columbia where he completed his Bachelor of Commerce and entered U.B.C Law School in 1966 and passed the bar in 1967.
