www.rimbeyreview.com Sod turning: After many months of behind the scenes planning, a skateboard park could be a reality for Rimbey by this fall, thanks to the local Kinsmen Club. A sod turning for the park was held Monday, June 22 at 2 p.m. on land on the south side of the Lions Park.

Local school children were on scene as were members of the Lions Club who donated $50,000 toward the park. Mayor Rick Pankiw manned the backhoe, while community service director Cindy Bowie stood on deck.

Sgt. Mark Groves to leave Rimbey RCMP

To many of the people in Rimbey, Sgt. Mark Groves is more than just the guy behind the badge who has a friendly wave, a nice smile, a police truck and wears a gun.

He is their friend.

But, after six years here, (Groves says this is longest post ever), he is moving up and he is moving on.

Promoted to the rank of staff sergeant, Groves will take over the reins of the RCMP detachment at Rocky Mountain House.

As staff sergeant he will be in charge of 30 officers and eight office clerks. He will be responsible for the area including Rocky Mountain House, Nordegg and Caroline as well as the O’Chiese, Sunchild and Big Horn reserves.

For Groves, who considers Rimbey his home, the move is bittersweet.

“Obviously, I’m looking forward to the challenge. I love to hunt and fish and the area around Rocky is really good for that. As well, the promotion is nice.”

But as much as Groves is happy and excited about the new challenge, he admits it is difficult to leave his policing

duties here. In fact, he and his wife Amy have decided to stay on their farm west of town and their two boys,

Treena Mielke On The Other Side Years ago, in a different time and place, I was a one of those moms who frequented arenas and gymnasiums and music recitals.

I transported skates and hockey equipment and gymnastic gear, securing the shields of bravery and inspiration over my children’s little hearts with whispered words of encouragement and love.

But, when the last child crammed her cherished CDs, her grandma’s homemade quilt and the last load of neatly folded laundry into her vehicle, resolutely turning her wheels down the one-way road leading to adulthood and her own apartment, I thought those doors had closed behind me for ever.

I was attending a piano recital, but this time, as one of the students. I actually sat at the piano and fumbled my way through a particularly lovely melody called, ‘When the River Meets the Sea.’ I had practiced ‘the song’ for about a million hours until my fingers ached and I could hear it in my head when I cooked supper, when I did the dishes, when I went for coffee, when I talked on the phone and when I finally put my head down on my pillow to go to sleep.

I grew to hate ‘the song’, but still it played on and on in my head relentlessly, like a record spinning out of control.

I have been taking piano lessons for about three years, proving only that I have much more determination than skill at the keyboard, but, still I plod along, being ridiculously happy when I master a song,

any song with minimal mistakes.

My piano teacher who is kind, and only slightly devious, said I should play in her recital. I said ‘no.’ She said, “it’s not just about you, you should do it so other old people will be inspired. Actually, I believe she used the word, “mature.” Again I said, “no”. She said, “Think how proud your grandchildren would be.”

I said, “Well, maybe.”

Anyway, before I knew it, I was at the recital, wiping my clammy hands on my skirt and lacing my fingers together to keep them from trembling. I smoothed down my skirt, which I had worn because of its flamboyant bright oranges and blues. I was hoping the skirt would portray boldness and confidence on the outside and these traits would somehow

transfer themselves to my insides, which were doing a nervous jiggle, kind of like Jell-o that had not quite set.

Well, I played ‘the song’, not well, but I played it and I dedicated it to my grandchildren because I wanted them to know that I got it.

I got that recitals can be horrible, frightening events and it doesn’t matter how yummy the snacks are later!

I got that thinking happy thoughts and smiling and breathing deeply is much, much easier if you are in the audience, not in front of it.

And I got that they are very brave people and being a kid is fun most of the time, but not all the time.

But mostly I got that stepping out of one’s safe little comfort zone, no matter how that looks, is not easy.

And there is no age limit on fear!

But, it turned out I was wrong.

I’m a grandma now and I’m back!

It’s even better this time.

In fact, it’s incredibly awesome.

It is so easy. Being a grandma means you just have to show up, slip gracefully into a chair someone, who knows you are usually late, has saved for you, look around and smile benevolently at everyone.

They all smile back. I have noticed that people return smiles to grandmas and young moms pushing strollers and people walking little dogs on leashes.

Being a grandma means I get to watch ball games, Tykwondo tournaments, cheer and gymnastic competitions, skating fun meets, hockey and swimming. And last, but not least, music recitals.

It is incredibly awesome to be the grandma.

However, this year I made a decision, which put me out of the comfort zone of just being a grandma sitting in the audience, looking all serene and knowledgeable, and, just a tiny bit smug to being an absolutely terrified participant.

The Port of Chief Mountain granted me access to the United States. The mountain roads, the rivers, the lakes, and the beauty cannot be downloaded like that latest app. The Zen gift of my motorcycle trip was beginning to fully unwrap.

I spent the day travelling south.

Mountains surround Missoula, Montana. The heat of the day radiated between the fortresses of rock and earth — nature’s microwave. Black asphalt held the fire of the sun. Snake oil would have boiled off in this heat.

I’m was glad to be off the road for the day and in a parking lot of a motel that had vacancies. My motorcycle was thoroughly hot soaked: the air cooled cylinders needed to dissipate some heat. The eyes behind my Ray-Bans were feeling scorched from wind burn.

My leathers were dry, my skin was dry, and my feet were sticky from the accumulated sweat in my boots.

Less that twenty-four hours ago, I was shaking all

over. My little run in with an Epipen and a two hour time out in a hospital seems like it happened in another life time.

The front office of the Brooks St. Motor Inn was encased in large floor to ceiling windows. It served as a viewing platform for all the happenings of the motel. From the air conditioned space, the motel’s microcosm was under loose observation.

As the clerked checked me into a room I watched as a woman fell down outside in the parking lot. She had difficulty getting back on her feet. I noticed that her walker had rolled a short distance away from her — she didn’t appear to be that old. Another motel resi-

dence noticed this trouble.

I watched him walk across the lot. The woman was still sitting on the asphalt and seemed to refuse help from the man; he wheeled the woman’s walker beside her and carried on with his business.

Home for the next two nights was a smoking room with a king sized bed. I needed to do laundry and remembered that the clerk at the front office said “there were laundry facilities available and soap was a dollar a load.” I walked back towards front office to purchase some laundry supplies. The woman I saw earlier was slumped over, the side of her head was on the hot asphalt of the parking lot, and there was

a small amount of vomit. I ran into the office.

Moments later a police officer arrived and couldn’t wake the woman. I watched as the officer radioed for an ambulance. The woman was partially revived by the medics and was taken to the hospital.

Later on in the evening, after I had eaten at a restaurant, I stepped into the front office of the motel to use the guest computer. The clerk had asked me “how long that woman was lying out there?” Just a few minutes, maybe ten or fifteen at the most. “Oh,” the clerk responded, “the police said that woman is homeless and drunk every day. I guess they’re always gathering her up from around town.”

Sgt. Mark Groves continued from page 3 “It’s a really nice community and a great place to raise kids,” he said.

When he first moved to Rimbey he said he felt a kinship to the town as it reminded him of High River, the town where he grew up.

He said the town and people in it totally met his expectations.

“I have made lifelong friends here. There are very good people here. Really, if the word got out about Rimbey, I think more families would move here.”

During his time here he has enjoyed working with organizations such as Rimbey FCSS, Rimbey Community Wellness, Gull Lake North Citizens on Patrol, Rural Crime Watch and Rimbey Fish and Game Association as well as the schools and business community.

He has also enjoyed writing the police report for the Review.

“I never can say some of the things I really want to say,” he said with a chuckle.

He recalled one incident in Rimbey where a drug dealer actually called the RCMP to complain that the cost of drugs was too high in

this town.

He said to me, “What they’re charging for drugs is just criminal.”

Groves said he really enjoyed that phone call.

He added that even the very worst weeks as an RCMP officer was often made easier in Rimbey by random acts of kindness shown to the members.

“Somebody would drop off a pie at the detachment or simply give us a word of encouragement. Those acts are very special to me.”

Groves has been an RCMP officer for more than 20 years. His posts include the Calgary Police Service where he worked as an undercover officer in the drug section, Dawson City and the Yukon.

Being a police officer is an honorable profession and one that requires physical and mental stamina.

Mostly, Groves said it’s about being fair and helping people.

“That’s why we do it.

To help and serve the community. That’s what it’s all about.”

Cpl. Carman Dutz will take over as acting sergeant after Groves leaves on July 13 until a replacement is hired.

Low numbers sign up for user-pay grass-recycling program

Although close to 500 residents signed a petition requesting the town to re-instate the grass-recycling pick up, as of press time Thursday only 14 homeowners have signed up for the user pay program.

Council deemed the petition to be insufficient, but agreed to go ahead with the request, but on a user pay basis.

Under the terms of the program residents are required to purchase an 80-litre

bin at a cost of $11 plus tax for grass/compost from the town. An additional bin may also be purchased. They also need to register with the town so a fee of $3 will be added to their monthly utility bill.

Homeowners must also sign the registration form for renters.

Items allowed in the yard compost disposal include leaves, grass clippings, mulch, flowers and plants, unscreened compost (decomposed yard waste materials), non-invasive weeds, tree and brush prunings, sod

and dirt attached to sod in small quantities.

Yard waste does not include animal feces, cardboard, plastic, soil, rocks, fencing, fabric, netting and other non-vegetated landscaping and gardening waste.

A couple of people sitting in the gallery in the council chambers at the June 8 meeting, questioned council as to why the petition was reviewed if the MGA stated it was not valid.

Acting CAO Donna Tona explained that council wanted administration to address

the petition out of respect to the 500 people who signed it, regardless of the ruling in the MGA, which meant it could have been tossed out the night it was presented.

She said the petition was not valid as it was presented directly to council and not to the CAO and it was pertaining to a budgetary issue.

However, she said council did not want to ignore the fact around 500 people wanted to see the service continue.

“We had been searching for alternatives and the

petition prompted us to accelerate out timetable.”

It was also pointed out to council that the public is confused as to what exactly will be picked up with the new program.

However, council said the issue has been advertised in the Review.

Former and present Rimbey residents gathered together last weekend for a great time of reminiscing, visiting and simply getting together.

Close to 300 people attended the 60th anniversary reunion of the Rimbey & District Old Timers’ Association held at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre Sat., June 20.

A short program began at 2 p.m. following lunch.

The class of ’65 was featured and a good representation gathered on stage for introductions and a brief message.

The Langmuir family was recognized as the pioneer family. A power point presentation on this interesting family was given by Walter Langmuir’s daughter, Darlene.

Allan Langmuir, who was born in Glasgow, Scotland, came to the Rimbey area in 1900. He married Daisy Tegart, a teacher in the area, in 1915. They set up a homestead in the Forshee area. The couple had nine children, Allan, Lillian, Alexander (Sandy), Walter, Ivor, Robert, Tom, Bertha and Edward.

In her presentation, Darlene noted that Allan Langmuir had wallpapered the Beatty House and worked on the construction of the Anglican Church, which is now at Pas Ka Poo Park.

As well as their children, descendants from Allan and Daisy Langmuir include 39 grandchildren, 87 great-grandchildren, 79 great-great grandchildren and one great-great-great grandchild.

About 53 descendants, representing four generations of Langmuirs, attended the event including siblings 95 year-old Walter Langmuir, 98 year-old Lillian Hawkings and 84 year-old Edward Langmuir.

Carol Carruthers from Rimbey, whose father was Alexander Langmuir said she was pleased so many from the family attended the event.

As in the past, the reunion proved to be an opportunity too good to pass up for many people who have made the event a priority over the years. continued on page 9

“It really is amazing,” she said.

Beierbach’s father, Ed, passed away in 2005 and her mother lives in Calgary.

“We’ve been looking forward to it.”

Ken Donnelly from Edmonton said the reunion is always something he looks forward to.

“It makes your year, it really does.”

in Rimbey, said the town became very special and dear to him during his time here.

Gladys Johnson, past president of Rimbey & District Old Timers’ Association said she was pleased with the event.

“It was very successful, and we had a very good turnout with quite a large number from the pioneer family who showed up.”

About 90 people came out on June 18 to attend the Rimbey Regional Synergy Group (RRSG) annual open house and barbeque. Display booths were busy with people connecting with local companies, county reps, the regulator, and support agencies like the Farmer’s Advocate Office and the Alberta Government’s Jobs, Skills, Training and Labour program.

The evening’s presentations started off with an overview and update from the Orphan Well Association, and then led into information from Bonavista on why industry needs to stay current on reclamation, and from Trace Associates on how they go about it. The Alberta Energy Regulator wrapped up the presentations with information on what and how the regulator monitors and enforces in relation to reclamation and remediation activities.

The panel then answered questions from the audience related to their specific situations and issues.

OAK Vernon Irvin Oak of Rimbey, Alberta passed away peacefully at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, Rimbey on Tuesday, June 23, 2015 at the age of 89 years.

Vernon will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his cherished children: Vern Oak of Red Deer; Cliff (Linda) Oak of Red Deer; Colleen (Tom) Parks of Lexington, Kentucky; Karen (Brian) Graham of Red Deer; Faye (Wayne) McQuaid of Innisfail; Rita Collins Lee (Jim) of Stauffer, Alberta; Evan (Lyla) Collins of Atikokan, Ontario; and Fern Collins (Robb McIntyre) of Fort Saskatchewan; as well as thirteen treasured grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Vernon was predeceased by his beloved wife, Genevieve in 2013; his parents, Olaus and Anne; his step-son, Dale Collins; two step-grandchildren, Nesta and Allan; and four brothers and one sister.

A Public Memorial Service in Celebration of Vernon’s Life was held at the Zion Lutheran Church, Rimbey on Friday, June 26, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Mark Schultz officiating. Cremation took place at the Central Alberta Crematorium, Red Deer. Interment followed the Memorial Service in the West Haven Cemetery, Rimbey. For the second time ever PAW (Panthers at Work) hoodies were presented by school principal Lane Moore to Kai Poffenroth and Damon Sawyer because of their significant contributions while attending school.

Class valedictorian Amy Woolf received the Governor General's Award, the highest mark in social 30 and highest mark in English 30 from presenter teacher Jason Hazlett, highest mark in math 30 and 31, from presenter teacher Brenda Von Kuster, and highest mark in Sciences from presenter teacher, Michael Sonnenberg.

Ryan Bergesen was presented the Leadership Award by teacher Jill Howe.

Savanna Spendiff, who had done work on school yearbooks, was presented the Lifetouch Scholarship by teacher Lee Varty. She also won the Cheryl Screpnek Humanitarian Award (presenter Sherry Haarstad).

Wolf Creek Scholarships for those going on to a college or university were earned by Alyssa Hyink and Vivien Schunk and the Wolf Creek CTS Scholarship for trades went to Shenoah Reban.

Presenters were Lane Moore and school trustee Pam Hansen.

Both the Bentley Ag Society Scholarship (presenters Jason Hazlett and Ag Society rep Janis Bickford) and the Bentley Seed Cleaning Plant Scholarship (presenter Lane Moore) went to Kai Poffenroth who is enrolling in Ag Management at Olds College.

Tyson Hueppelsheuser was awarded the Justin Bickford Memorial Scholarship by Steven Lush and Breanne and J'lyn Bickford.

Before presenting the athletic awards, assistant principal/physical education teacher Steven Lush, listed off numerous athletic accomplishments of the school that this class greatly contributed to.

"All year I have asked these student athletes to do one thing: Leave their legacy behind for younger student athletes to follow," he stated. "Not only were they great athletes, but they were serving as leaders who volunteered to help run over 10 tournaments this year."

The Bentley senior high students won the zone supremacy banner again this year and the senior track team won zones for the eighth consecutive year.

The senior girls won the bronze medal at the golf zone championship.

The senior high cross country team finished first at zones.

The senior boys volleyball finished first at their home tournament and second in their league championship.

The senior girls basketball finished third at their home tournament, and second in league play.

team finished fourth at their home tournament and were undefeated in league play so were league champions.

The senior boys handball team finished second at zones, and the girls handball team also finished second at zones and won a bronze medal at provincials.

He stated there were many banners still to hang.

Major Athletic Award medallions went to Taryn Heagy, Alyssa Hyink, Shenoah Reban, Savanna Spendiff, Tyson Hueppelsheuser, Kai Poffenroth, and Damon Sawyer.

The outstanding female athlete (presenters Steven Lush and Royal Purple representative Brenda Valiquette) was Savanna Spendiff and the outstanding male athlete (presenters Stephen Lush and Elks representative Lynda HaarstadPetten) was Kai Poffenroth.

Savanna Spendiff and Kai Poffenroth also won the female and male Bentley Library Society’s best all around student awards (presenters Lane Moore and Bentley Library Society chairperson Val Anderson) contingent on them going on to post secondary education.

The 'PRIDE' (school theme: Partnership/Respect/Integrity/ Dedication/Excellence) Awards, sponsored by the Sylvan Lake Rotary Club for the fifth year (presenters Lane Moore and Sylvan Lake Rotary Club representative Joyce Megson), also went to Savanna Spendiff and Kai Poffenroth.

In line for Rutherford Scholarships for 80 per cent or higher are Tyson Hueppelsheuser, Alyssa Hyink, Kai Poffenroth, Savanna Spendiff, and Amy Woolf, and for 75 to79.9 per cent are Ryan Bergesen, Lyndsey Grutterink, and Vivien Schunk.

Bentley 2015 graduates are Ryan Bergesen, Lyndsey Grutterink, Taryn Heagy, Tyson Hueppelsheuser, Alyssa Hyink, Alyssa Lautenbach, Heather McLaren, Etham Nickerson, Kai Poffenroth, Shenoah Reban, Damon Sawyer, Vivien Schunk, Savanna Spendiff, Hope Tress, Amy Woolf, Jared Zinger, and Wyatt Jensen.

Each received their Bentley School diploma and a special Bentley 100th Anniversary certificate from the town. Principal Moore and MLA Nixon presented each student with the diploma and certificate before they descended the stage. At the bottom of the stairs each was given hugs by two of the school staff and handed two roses to share with their families at the end of the dark gray carpet marked with dotted "highway" lines - Every Mile a Memory.

There was a dry grad again this year for graduates. The entire night was organized and supervised by parent volunteers.

The event provided more miles of memories for all involved.

Bentley grads travel down miles of memories

The 2015 Bentley school Grade 12 graduation exercises took place at the Blindman Valley Ag Centre on June 19.

The theme chosen by the 2015 class was “Every Mile a Memory”.

The parking lot was overflowing, not only with vehicles, but also with rain as a heavy storm passed through.

Inside the hall there were floating purple, black and silver balloons, mini-lights, black net material on the head table wall, sprays of silver trees, beautiful floral table centerpieces, and huge silver “GRAD 2015” ornaments standing on the floor.

A Power Point Presentation by Savanna Spendiff featuring the grads was shown before the supper, catered by Bob Ronnie.

were Grade 11 students Ashley Cumming and Kyle Adair. Grace was given by Caleb Schmidt from the Bentley Youth Group.

Toast to the parents was given by graduates Shenoah Reban and Tyson Hueppelsheuser. The reply came from parents Dodi Farnham and Terry Reban.

Alyssa Hyink and Savanna Spendiff extended the toast to the teachers. Jason Hazlett and Brenda Von Kuster replied.

Lane Moore introduced the graduates.

“I have been told (by the graduates) that they have heard all my speeches so I’m not going to say anything but — ”, he said, and he introduced assistant principal Stephen Lush to give the address.

Lush expressed how much he would miss everyone and mentioned each grad by recalling each individually with a memory.

Bentley class historians Damon Sawyer and Lyndsey Grutterink share memories of classmates at the Bentley graduation exercises June 19.

Town mayor Lynda Haarstad-Petten said these grads are Bentley’s “centennial” graduates as Bentley celebrates 100 years since incorporation this year.

Other congratulatory messages were given by Wolf Creek representative Pam Hansen and by MLA Mr. Jason Nixon.

has been with the class since Grade 6, delivered her speech using a form similar to the style of Dr. Seuss. She mentioned what she had learned from her teachers and said, “Learn from your mistakes.

Don't follow the crowd.” Guest speaker was Chad Beagle who had played with the WHL, and with the Bentley Generals senior hockey team for 10 years, and is now coaching in Rimbey.

Happy birthday, Canada: Members of the Rimbey Lions Club, Michelle Oberhammer and Michael Jarmoluk, recently visited the area Grade 1 students with Lions Project Pride, where students were presented with certificates and Canadian Flags. The Lions shared how important it is to help others, be good citizens and how proud we all are to be Canadian.
