The Weekend View

B.C. Views: The view from the East Coast

by Tom Fletcher I’ve just spent two weeks viewing events from the opposite side of Canada, in and around St. John’s Newfoundland. It’s the same country, but you wouldn’t know it sometimes. Here on the West Coast, “kayaktivists” paddled around a Shell offshore oil drilling platform being serviced at Seattle, striking poses of resistance for the media from their petroleum-based watercraft. Meanwhile at Bull Arm outside St. John’s, work continues on a massive “gravity-based structure” that will soon be drilling into the Hebron oilfield 350 km offshore. It will have living quarters and drill rig above and a tank with capacity for 1.2 million barrels of crude below. Offshore oil has turned St. John’s into a boomtown. With one industrial park nearing capacity on the edge of town, a second is under construction. Locals call it “Dannyland,” after its developer, former premier Danny Williams. St. John’s Airport is buzzing with flights back and forth to Edmonton and Fort McMurray, and crew helicopters shuttling back and forth from offshore oil rigs. Tourism

is picking up, with a new cross-Canada ad campaign and WestJet starting service to Dublin and London. A foreign supplier won a contract for tankers to bring oil ashore. With no media-connected environmental groups to steer the subject to far-fetched disaster scenarios, debate in the Newfoundland and Labrador legislature turned to concerns about maintaining local employment. Outside the city, parallels with B.C. become evident. Tiny towns struggle to hang on as young people choose opportunity over isolation, and the only expansion is at church graveyards. While cities struggle with high housing and recreational property costs, homes in remote areas are going for a song. Up north in Labrador, a hydroelectric dam at Muskrat Falls is under construction. Its $8 billion estimated price tag is in the same range as BC Hydro’s Site C project on the Peace River, which will part a sea of protesters and lawyers and move ahead this summer. Nalcor Energy, Newfoundland’s electrical utility, is dipping into contingencies in an effort to keep it on time and on budget. Here on the Left Coast, enviros and the Green Party rail against hydro as well as oil and gas, and of course you can’t even mention nuclear. Climate activism proceeds in a logical vacuum in these parts, as it often does in Europe. Prime Minister

Stephen Harper signed on to a farcical “carbon free in 85 years” pledge at the G7 meeting in Germany. But hey, it’s an election year, not a time for serious discussion of issues. Imperial Oil’s Kearl oilsands mine at Fort McMurray has started production from its $9 billion second phase, with the help of many Newfoundlanders. Production continues to grow, heavy oil prices have surged with paving season, and largescale liquefied natural gas export plans begin to take shape in B.C. With the legislature about to be recalled to endorse the Petronasled LNG export project, Premier Christy Clark has assembled a climate action team with representatives from industry, First Nations, local governments and a couple of professional protesters for good measure. They have an absurdly short deadline to recommend changes to B.C.’s token carbon tax, as gasoline consumption returns to pre-tax levels despite continued high pump prices. In St. John’s, another long, cold winter has finally loosened its grip after piling snow to doorknob levels. Every street in sight is being patched and repainted. The debate about new energy supplies has a more serious tone in Newfoundland. The last elected premier, Kathy Dunderdale, lost her job in the wake of winter power blackouts. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press. Twitter: @tomfletcherbc Email: tfletcher@ blackpress.ca.

Junifer Parisien and Cristina Borgogelli of Tamarack Centre presented Kim Levie, Assistant Director Community Connections Society of Southeast BC with a cheque for $2,167 for the Kootenay Child Development Centre. The funds were raised during the Kick-Off Pancake Breakfast held at Tamarack Centre during the Sam Steele Days festivities last week. The breakfast was held Thursday, June 18 and attracted 531 guests and required 14 volunteers and Mall administration employees to set-up, serve and tear down the event. Tamarack Centre would like to thank everyone who attended and a big thank-you to sponsors who contributed food, drinks, tents and volunteers: Save-On-Foods, Tim Horton’s at Tamarack, Green Door Catering, Bridge Interior, Culligan and Columbia Movie Theatre.

For some, Sam Steele Days is all about the parade, great food, games and spending time with friends and people just visiting the area. For others, it is all about the Wiener Dog Races.

A world-class dairy research centre is under construction in Elora, Ontario, near the University of Guelph. The Livestock Research Innovation Centre — Elora Dairy Facility is a partnership project realized by the university, the Agricultural Research Institute of Ontario and the Ontario dairy industry. At the centre, researchers and students will have upto-the-minute facilities where they can develop advances in dairy cattle health and well-being, reproduction, nutrition and value-added milk

ly about 45 research projects studying sustainable development in dairy farming and the role of milk in human health. Topics range from manure management to cow comfort to the effects of dairy consumption on various illnesses and conditions. Why is a cuttingedge dairy research centre notable news in Canada? For one thing, the market place demands it. Consumers are increasingly concerned about ethical livestock care and well-being, and they also want more accurate information about the impact of dairy on health. In fact, the overall dietary trend towards more proteinrich foods and vege-

An update on GMOs in North America Like it or not, the adoption of biotechnology in agriculture is standard practice these days. The cultivation of genetical-

ly modified organisms (GMOs) now extends to over 175 million hectares worldwide. In 2013, 27 countries

Friday, June 26, 2015 Kootenay News Advertiser grew GM crops; that is equal to about 18 million farmers. Topping the list, the United States has 70 million hectares of GM crops, followed by Brazil (40 million hectares), Argentina (24 million hectares), India (11 million hectares),

and Canada (10.5 million hectares). In Europe, only five countries allow GM crops,

including Spain. Since 2013, several new GM crops were introduced, including

a drought-tolerant corn in North America and Africa, a first herbicide and insect-tolerant soy-

bean in Brazil, a golden rice in the Philippines, and a corn in China. With the expansion of GM crops, the opponents of biotechnology are also increasing in number. More and more petitions are being circulated by the general public demanding that big supermarket chains stop selling genetically modified sweet corn — of all the GMOs, corn is the main food to be grown for human consumption in Canada in 2013. Besides corn, Canadians can also find some genetically modified Hawaiian papaya and American squash in their grocery stores. In the United States, extensive public awa ren ess campaigns are demand ing the reporting of genetically modified ingredients. Polls show that nearly 93 percent of Americans would support GMO labeling. In the United Sta t es, where almost all cotton, soybeans, canola, corn, and beet harvests are genetically modified, 26 states have already proposed legislation to draw this fact to the attention of consumers. In 2012, GM crops grown worldwide consisted mainly of canola, cotton, corn, and soybeans.

Congratulations to Highland Dance students of Liela Cooper who have been nominated to attend the North American Highland Scholarship Competition in San Diego in October. These dancers were nominated to attend this prestigious competition based on their marks of “Honours” in their Grade examinations given by the British Association of Teachers of Dance (Glasgow) this year. Besides the actual competition itself, the girls will also participate in a 2 day Highland Weekend of workshops given by the best instructors from Scotland, sight-seeing and a Ceilidh (Scottish word for dance) to finish off a wonderful, fun filled weekend. OBITUARY

Vidamour, Robert Douglas "Corky" October 4, 1931 - June 15, 2015 With sad hearts we would like to announce the passing of our Father, Robert Vidamour, better known as "Corky" on June 15, 2015, at the age of 83. Dad was born in Bull River on October 4, 1931 to Helen Watson and Reginald Vidamour. He married the love of his life, Margaret Barnhardt, from Wycliffe in 1953 and they remained in the Cranbrook area where they raised their three children. He worked hard in the logging industry, owning and operating small mills for some of that time. If hard work equalled money, Dad would have been a millionaire 10 times over. When Dad retired he spent a lot of time researching his family history and as a result he found family in Guernsey C.I. and was united with his half-sister Deidre Cousineau and her family in Quebec. In 1997, Robert and Margaret travelled to Guernsey, to meet his distant relatives and discover his roots. Dad was so happy to have found and be welcomed into this previously unknown part of his past. He loved playing cards, especially cribbage and was famous at the Seniors Hall for his (one in 216,580) 29 hand! Robert was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, (Margaret), his daughter Janine, two half-brothers Doug and Harold Howg and his half sister Deirdre Cousineau. He will be fondly remembered by his children, Chuck, Jeanette (Ken), Mark (Avis), and his grandchildren, Jevin, Lucas, Colin (Giselle), Alexandra, Justin and Brett his cousin Ruth Drescher, Tom Vidamour and his many nieces, nephews and friends. A gathering to celebrate his life will be held at the family home. 2053, Jim Smith Lake Road, Cranbrook on July 4, 2015 at 2 pm. Memorial donations may be made in Robert's memory to The F.W. Green Home, 1700 4th St S, Cranbrook BC V1C 6E1 Condolences may be left for the family at www.markmemorial.com Mark Memorial Funeral Services in care of arrangements (250) 426-4864

What a way to kick off summer – Sam Steele Days Parade 2015 Photos brian coombs

Yes, it was another successful Sam Steele Days Parade. Besides floats and visitors from other parts of the country and from the U.S., the perennial favourites were on hand to share the magic. (Pictured, clockwise) The Abreast in the Rockies Dragon Boat Team came out in full force. Even the smallest riders got to take part in the parade. The ever-popular Walk a Mile in Her Shoes group, raising funds for the Women’s Resource Centre. A large collection of former Sam Steele Ambassadors. Finally, the 2015 Sam Steele Ambassadors’ float and the most recently crowned ambassadors. Visit www. kootenayadvertiser.com for more parade pictures.

the logging industry in the Columbia Valley, amidst environmental concerns from organizations across the province. Wilks spoke in the House of Commons in Ottawa last week to respond to NDP critics who had presented concerns about the impact of forestry on the ecological preservations of animals, plants and trees in B.C. “According to negative nattering by some, in the interior of B.C. and in Kootenay-Columbia in particular, there is not much good news for the environment,” Wilks told The Valley Echo. “Forest practices are unfairly decried and the loggers bear the brunt of the criticism, which is why I spoke up for them nationally.” The Interior Lumber Manufacturers Association (ILMA) is a coalition of 14 logging companies based in 13 communities across the southern interior of B.C. According to Wilks, those companies are the mainstay of the economy in the Columbia Valley. “Most of these companies are small and many are family-owned,” Wilks said. “All are the cornerstones of their

communities. Caring for the environment is front and centre.” Wilks was adamant that concerns from opposition politicians about the disregard for environmental regulations by logging companies that are instead solely focused on profit are grossly over-exaggerated. “All of the ILMA members meet or exceed existing forestry regulations,” Wilks said. “It is not just part of gaining social licence, it is the way they think business should be done.” Tim Ryan, Chair of the B.C. Forest Practices Board, an independent watchdog for logging operations across the province, somewhat agrees with Wilks. Ryan said that in the last five years, companies in the Columbia Valley have been fairly successful in respecting environmental regulations. “We find that companies meet the forest laws,” Ryan said. “There are, however, a couple areas that need improvement.” One of the major causes for concern from the Forest Practices Board is fire safety. The board has completed several audits in the last two years and has found that some companies in the valley have not been prepared in the case of wildfires. “By prepared, I mean having the proper pumps, hand tools, tanks and taking the necessary caution to do daily assessments,” Ryan said. Another concern is the damage left by the implementation of forestry roads. Ryan said unsafe building conditions can lead to the eradication of many plants and trees. “This demonstrates that we have got to remain diligent and focused with respect to meeting the laws and regulations that the government has laid out,” Ryan said. Ryan said that while environmental regulations are typically met by companies in the valley and across the province, the strength of those regulations may be a growing problem. “We are hearing from the public that some of the forestry laws adhered to out there are not effective or stringent enough, so we need to test those things,” Ryan concluded

3 Facts You Need To Know About...

Invasive Species Month

1. Invasive species of flora and fauna are one of the most serious threats against our natural environment. I have fought hard for many years to ensure that the East Kootenay gets the funding we need to combat the spread of noxious weeds and I will continue that fight along with the EK Invasive Species Council which does good work. 2. Today, we are facing a new threat from a different kind of invasive species - zebra mussels. These insidious little creatures infested the waterways of where I grew up in small town Ontario. They ruined all the wonderful places where I used to swim, fish and duck hunt. We cannot allow zebra mussels to get a foothold in the East Kootenay. 3. We were the first region in BC to get a mobile wash station for boats, thanks to funding from CBT. But last year, 12 contaiminated boats were intercepted and this year, 2 so far. Please, if you take your boat outside BC or if you know of boats from eastern Canada or the US, make sure it is washed extensively. To learn more, visit www.bcinvasives.ca.

Area fire prohibitions in effect again Effective at noon Pacific Time on Wednesday, June 24, Category 2 open fires will be prohibited in the Southeast Fire Centre to help prevent humancaused wildfires and protect public safety. This prohibition will remain in place until the public is otherwise notified. The Category 3 open burning prohibition that was put in place on May 22, 2015 remains in effect. Specifically, prohibited activities include: * The burning of waste or other materials. * Stubble or grass fires of any size over any area. * The use of fireworks, sky lanterns, burning barrels or burning cages of any size or description. * The use of binary exploding targets. * The use of air curtain burners (forced air burning systems). A map of the affected area is available online at: http://bit. ly/1dMzbdA This prohibition does not ban campfires that are a half-metre high by a half-metre wide or smaller, and it does not apply to cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes. To learn about the differences between campfires, Category 2 open fires and Category 3 open fires, please visit: http:// bit.ly/1GlhE9l These prohibitions cover all BC Parks, Crown lands and private lands, but do not apply within the boundaries of a local government that has forest fire prevention bylaws and is serviced by a fire department. Please check with local authorities to see if any other burning restrictions are in place before lighting any fire. Anyone found in contravention of an open burning prohibition may be issued a ticket for $345, required to pay an administrative penalty of $10,000 or, if convicted in court, fined up to $100,000 and/or sentenced to one year in jail. If the contravention causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person responsible may be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs. The Southeast Fire Centre covers the area extending from the U.S. border in the south to Mica Dam in the north and from the Okanagan Highlands

and Monashee Mountains in the west to the B.C.-Alberta border in the east. It includes the Selkirk Forest District and the Rocky Mountain Forest District.

The secret to a healthy lawn

For many people the foundation for any aesthetically appealing yard begins with a green healthy lawn. In the summer months maintaining a healthy lawn can be a challenge. This is due to having to combat both the heat of the summer as well as those pesky weeds that appear to run rampant once the weather turns nice. One very important component to achieving your desired lawn results that is greatly underestimated is proper fertilization. Fertilizing your lawn provides it with the sufficient macronutrients to grow thick green blades and develop a healthy root system. Having a healthy lawn will enable it to combat weeds and will result in less of a need for weed killers to be applied. It will also be better able to deal with the extreme changes in temperature. Lawn fertilizers vary by the different levels of macronutrients that they have in them. Most are differentiated by a three digit sequence on the package. Those numbers represent the percentage of the three primary nutrients which are Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potash. Occasionally a fourth number will also be listed and that is the percentage of Sulphur in the mixture. Nitrogen is responsible for many components of lawn growth. Among those various roles, one of its most important is in stimulating shoot growth which aids in spring green up and helps promote recovery from injury and environmental stresses. This is why a fertilizer higher in Nitrogen is recommended for early Spring. The second number is Phosphorus which is often associated with healthy root development but in truth, plants use it for many important growth processes. Potash is represented by the third number and is also important for overall health and strength primarily through the colder months. For Spring and early Summer one of our favourite mixtures is a 24-10-10 with 7% Sulphur. This is a great lawn food to really wake your lawn up from winter and getting growing great. In the later weeks of Summer a great fertilizer to use is a triple sixteen, which is 16-16-16. This is lower in Nitrogen but still provides a sufficient level of macronutrients. When applying the fertilizer, smaller doses more frequently is the true secret to a healthy lawn. This will allow the lawn to feed regularly. It will also not experience the shock of a one time nutrient overload with a long period of receiving nothing. Spread the fertilizer onto dry grass as this allows the fertilizer granules to fall to the base of the lawn near the soil. Once a light and even coat is applied water the lawn thoroughly to avoid any potential of burning. It won’t be long afterwards that you will notice visible changes for the better!

forms well and the continuous tweaking has resulted in improved fuel economy. If you were to attend any of the major manufacturer media launches, you would hear journo after journo complain about the audacity of carmakers who use CVT. In the old days, CVT deserved its poor reputation with power lags, high revving, uneven gearing and unedifying and unexpected lurches forward! The technology has evolved. And, the fact is the average consumer has no problem with it, liking the smoother transitions. My first test route was in the Whistler area and showed off its hill climbing skills and the smoothness of the ‘dreaded’ CVT. It’s no gazelle but it is sure-footed and the CVT did not fail even when the driver behaved like a lead foot! I found the ride to be smooth and highway passing no challenge. Cornering at sensible speeds keeps the vehicle firmly planted. It’s darn quiet too. Then I spent a week tooling around

the city putting it through its shopping paces. Parking on the street was a little challenging but I’ll put that down to impatient drivers behind, not prepared for the Murano’s wide swing needed to get into that tricky spot. On the supermarket lot, it glided into spaces forwards or backwards with ease. It’s a fine long-distance vehicle but would serve well as a commuter where longer distances are the norm. I can see it being used in the suburbs but it’s a bit large for the centre of the city. The Murano is not too thirsty for its size – 11.2/8.3 L/100 kms. That’s about two litres per 100 klicks better than its main rivals. Prices: Murano S FWD, $29,998; Murano SV FWD, $33,698; Murano SV AWD,$35,698; Murano SL AWD, $39,098; Murano Platinum AWD, $43,498. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Show in Frankfurt in September this year (September 17 to 27). Two years after the Infiniti Q30 Concept debuted at the 2013 Frankfurt show, the production version of this segment-spanning compact car will be revealed at the show this year. Infiniti is in the final stages of preparing the launch. Dynamic testing and ultimate validation is currently taking place across the UK and throughout mainland Europe where development of the vehicle has been completed at the company’s Engineering Centre in Cranfield, in northeast England, since 2014. The Q30 will go on sale in Europe towards the end of 2015 with other markets to follow subsequently. More news on the Infiniti Q30 active compact will be released closer to the Frankfurt show in September. The road to production for this much-anticipated car has been rocky though not for what might be expected reasons. Its design and engineering development has the fingerprints of four-times F1 Champion Sebastian Vettel all over it. When his ‘hands-on’ association with the car was revealed, it was not merely a stroke of marketing genius but the racer’s renowned smarts meant his input would be extremely valuable. Then Infiniti President Johan de Nysschen announced the car alongside Vettel, who was wearing his Infiniti-Red Bull F1 team shirt for the occasion. Since then the president has headed over to GM to run Cadillac and Vettel has joined the Ferrari F1 team. After chatting to Vettel, there’s no doubt in the mind of yours truly that he will want to get a turn at the wheel of a Q30 production car to see just how much of his advice was accepted. Sadly, for Infiniti they won’t be able to trumpet his participation in Frankfurt this fall. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

JULY 12

Explore Horse Barn Valley, 10am.Meet at the Matthew Crk. Rd. turn-off for a ramble into this little-known area adjacent to the Nature Park. This is a fairly easy 4km hike with a couple of stops. Come prepared.

Hugs: I’d like to send a huge hug to the honest person who found the $40 I left at the self checkout at Superstore. Instead of pocketing the money for themselves, they turned it in to the front desk. I am very thankful for your honesty!! It sure brightened my day! Slugs: To the inconsiderate drivers on the Cranbrook to Kimberley corridor who drive the whole distance at 80 km in a 100 km zone, piling up lines of vehicles behind you. Do you ever check your rearview and side mirrors and think about pulling over to let the lineup through? You then proceed to drive through Marysville at 80 km in a 50 km zone. Don’t you understand how speed limits work? Slugs: SLIMY SLUGS to whoever walked into my garage and helped themselves to my “ridgid 18 volt compact radio” complete

with battery that was sitting on the back of my quad. This was on Friday, June 5th, between 2:15 and 3:45 p.m. Please return to the home you stole it from!! Hugs: HUGE Hugs to June who found my daughter’s wallet at KFC and personally returned it to our house!! I am sure it took her out of her way and maybe delayed supper but we are very thankful she took the time. We will definitely pay it forward. Hugs: To the WONDERFUL WOMEN of Pennington’s retail store, some of which have served our community 14 years since store opened. Always a wonderful, welcoming and supportive team! Each of you deserve to find great new jobs. One less local service, fewer choices and most important... more local jobs lost to online and out of town retail consumption. Hugs: A big thank you to Rob and Darcy at Rite-Way RV for

always trying to accommodate all of their customers during this busy season and for the excellent work you do Rob. It is such a pleasure doing business with you! Hugs: For the nice man at Superstore on May 22 who helped two senior women put their bags of potting soil & manure into their truck. Slugs: People who insist on wasting good clean water to wash their sidewalks & driveways. Slugs: Huge slugs to the “so called” committee that spent tax payers money to “beautify” the Cranbrook main strip...What happened? Do we need more empty business buildings up for sale or lease, more car lots, and many more ugly sea cans that should never have been allowed...NOT !!!!

If you have a Hug or a Slug...we’d like to hear it. Simply email us at shannon@kootenayadvertiser.com with your short quips, compliments or complaints. We will print the anonymous submissions for all to see. Be honest, but all we ask is you keep it tasteful. Hugs and Slugs will be printed as space allows, if we miss yours check back next week and you will be bumped to the start of the list. You can also drop by a written submission to our office at 1510 2nd Street N. or call Shannon at (250)489-3455 or 1-800-665-2382

The extensive survey is being carried out by the Elk Valley Child Care Advisory Initiative (EVCCAI), a group that aims to understand child care availability, affordability, and accessibility in Elkford, Sparwood, and Fernie. The EVCCAI and the Elkford Women’s Task Force (EWTF) obtained funding from the Columbia Basin Trust to hire an experienced consultant to conduct this survey, which runs until July 5. The results will be presented in the fall, and

Sharon Strom, of EVCCAI said: “We want to paint a picture of the current child care situation, and understand if child care issues create barriers to employment in the Elk Valley, and how our communities can work together to resolve them.” Kim Bauer of EWTF added: “Availability, affordability and accessibility of child care affect people from all parts of our community – not just parents. We would like to hear from grandparents, other family members, employers and friends.” Surveys must be filled out by July 5 and will take between five to 25 minutes to complete, depending how much detail is given.
