Local author pens book detailing operations of agency Proceeds from Cameron Kennedy’s book to fund Kenyan pre-school

W

hen Cameron Kennedy travelled to Afghanistan with A Better World Canada (ABW) founder Eric Rajah in 2007, he had no idea that the many notes he took would eventually come to formulate the foundation of a book.

Kennedy’s collection of notes, first-hand encounters and various interviews with organization founders and community members paints a vivid picture of the 25year legacy that is A Better World Canada (ABW).

The book is titled Journey of Hope, Celebrating 25 Years of A Better World Canada.

It explores in depth the past, present and future of the organization, with a focus on projects in Afghanistan and Kenya where a majority of the ABW projects remain.

“Since I’d started writing about A Better World, I thought it was a very interesting organization. Its approach to international development was certainly nothing that I had seen before. If there was a book to be written about it, I wanted to be the one to do it,” Kennedy said.

“I knew I wanted to do a sort of a roundup of the history of the organization, as well as take a look at the future of the organization and see where it was going to go. A Better World does most of its projects in Kenya so it was decided early on that we would focus heavily on Kenya and Afghanistan.”

In 2007, Kennedy travelled with Rajah to Afghanistan to check up on some of the projects that had been ongoing in the area. Again in 2011 Kennedy travelled to Afghanistan and in 2013 he took a trip to Kenya.

During these trips, Kennedy visited many sites where ABW had been involved, either working on projects to completion or removing themselves after a period of time, depending on the situation.

Kennedy said in the time between 2007 and 2011, ABW had shifted its focus to almost entirely educational-based projects.

A Better World worked closely with Azalea Lehndorff’s 100 Schools Project to support girls’ education in Afghanistan.

While in Afghanistan, Kennedy was very impressed and impacted by Lehndorff’s work ethic and the work that she was doing in partnership with A Better World Canada.

“In Afghanistan, I was impressed by Azalea’s ability to get things done – she’s very motivated and has a way of being able to persuade people to get things done.

with itself was pretty remarkable. There was a big drive for education and the people wanted to be educated, especially the girls who weren’t allowed to be educated under the Taliban,” he said.

Kennedy’s experiences in Afghanistan between 2007 and 2011 proved to be extremely helpful in writing the book because it allowed him to see first-hand the impact on the community, as well as where support was still lacking. These experiences, along with his 2013 trip to Kenya, helped to guide the honesty in the book about what was working with ABW and which projects were not.

“I guess one of the images that stuck out for me was from 2007 and we visited one of the schools where ABW had provided some desks in 2004. We visited some of the classrooms and the kids were in biology class but had no teacher,” he said.

“I think that was a common problem in a lot of the schools. Even if the infrastructure was there, and people had a place to go to school, whether they had a qualified teacher or not was a whole other story.”

Kennedy said that from the very beginning he wanted the book to be as honest as possible and include both the triumphs and failures of ABW. Travelling with Rajah was a way for Kennedy to bring authenticity to his book and to immerse him in all that A Better World was.

“Eric has never been one to shy away from the failures, which is refreshing as a journalist. You’re so used to talking to people who are trying to minimize or whitewash what went wrong and Eric’s always been very honest about the things that worked and the things that didn’t,” Kennedy said.

“I tried to balance the good and the bad.

I think there are certain sections of the book where a lot more could have been written that I didn’t include because it was sort of happening as the book was being written and if I had kept writing I would never have gotten done.”

Going along with many of the project themes that ABW orchestrates, Kennedy has asked that all proceeds from his book go to fund the Tulwap Early Childhood Development Centre (a pre-school) near Kericho, Kenya.

He said this was important because he witnessed the grave differences between the opportunities and experiences his own children have in school versus those in countries like Afghanistan and Kenya. He wants the children benefitting from these projects to benefit at the highest level. “(The pre-school in Kenya) is what kept me motivated. I knew that if this book

Brian Malley denied bail pending appeal

BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express Convicted murderer Brian Malley, who appealed his conviction in April, was denied bail pending his appeal which will be heard this fall.

Malley, 57, will have his appeal spoken to in the Alberta Court of Appeals on Sept.

15th. On Feb. 24th he was found guilty of first-degree murder, causing an explosion of an explosive substance likely to cause serious bodily harm, death or serious damage to property and sending or delivering to a person an explosive device in relation to the death of Victoria Shachtay in 2011.

Malley was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years – an automatic sentence for a first-degree murder conviction. He was also sentenced to

serve four years concurrently with the life sentence for the explosive charges he was convicted of – two years for each charge.

In Justice Jean Côté’s decision on June 16th, he stated the danger of Malley jumping bail or misconducting himself while on bail is moderate, but not strong, however, he also noted the offence is extremely grave. “Short of treason in wartime, or multiple killings, it could not be much worse,” his notes read.

During the appeal, a number of letters in Malley’s support were also submitted for consideration.

“I have read the volume of letters about the appellant’s generous nature and character, which letters support bail. Most come from the appellant’s wife and her circle,” stated Côté. “I do not find very helpful the letters of support, especially as

most assume that the appellant is entirely innocent. Yet the letters’ authors do not state that they have personal knowledge about this crime. Nor is it obvious that they would.”

Meanwhile, Malley’s charges stem after an explosion occurred inside Shachtay’s Innisfail residence in November 2011. The incident occurred after a package disguised as a Christmas gift was delivered to the home which RCMP confirmed was the source of the explosion.

Malley was arrested in Red Deer on May 25th, 2012.

Shachtay, 23, was disabled and in a wheelchair from a car collision that happened in 2004. She was also a single mother to a then seven-year-old girl.

Investigation showed Malley had known Shachtay for a number of years and acted

as her financial adviser. Shachtay received a settlement of $575,000 after her accident.

A $200,000 loan was also taken out on behalf of Shachtay. All of that money was gone within four years. Malley also supported her from his own personal account in the amount of $44,000.

During the course of the six-week long trial, 50 witnesses testified and 100 exhibits were entered.

After the verdict was handed down Crown Prosecutor Anders Quist said this case was one of the most cold-blooded that he has ever encountered.

“The evidence shows him having worked on this bomb from July of 2011 to Nov. 25th of 2011. To carefully and methodically put those pieces together over that time with the intent to kill – that is pretty cold.”

CITY COUNCIL BRIEFS CHICKEN BYLAW UPDATE City council was presented with an update on the Chicken Bylaw during this week’s meeting. The bylaw was given second and third reading on July 7th, 2014 to allow urban chickens in Red Deer.

According to council notes, one of the regulations included in the bylaw was that the maximum number

of licenses that could be issued would initially be 65, with a potential increase on an annual basis.

As of June 11th, 2015, all 65 licenses had been issued, council was told.

It was confirmed there were too many on the site – the situation was immediately rectified. The second complaint was in regards to concerns on the construction of the coop, and the noise of the chickens. Inspectors found the owner had complied with the bylaw requirements so no further action was needed, council was told.

Throughout the pilot project prior to the bylaw, site visits were conducted with 30 of the 35 registrants, which included a tour of the coop areas. In February of 2014, the City sent letters to all persons living within 100m of all project registrants as well.

During the pilot project, a total of 1,850 letters were sent out to those living within 100m of homes with urban chickens. Of those, 478 were

returned.

Of those, 287 were in support of the bylaw regulations, 170 were not and 21 were undecided.

HERITAGE RANCH POND NAMED City council gave the green light to name a pond at Heritage Ranch ‘Mitchell’ Pond after Barry Mitchell.

The Municipal Features Naming Committee received the request from the local branch of Trout Unlimited.

On Dec. 18th, 2013 the local chapter of Trout Unlimited Canada put forward to request in honour of Mitchell – a local man who dedicated his life’s work to fresh water angling and watershed conservation.

According to council notes, Mitchell, “Dedicated his life’s work for over 40

years to protecting and restoring our freshwater ecosystems and was awarded the Order of Big Horn Awards to recognize outstanding contributions made to fish and wildlife conservation by private individuals, organizations and corporations.”

Mitchell passed away this past February. “Mr. Mitchell took it upon himself to be a pioneer in fresh water development and fish habitat,” said Councillor Ken Johnston, noting his support for the pond naming.

With the exception of Councillor Lawrence Lee, council supported the name change request. “More appropriately, it should be even a bigger body of water – a different body of water – that represents his life and historical significance,” said Lee of the designation.

OPINION Protecting our seniors Elder abuse is one of the most horrendous crimes plaguing society today.

The thought that many seniors are abused in a number of ways – physically, financially, psychologically, emotionally – and that few of these situations are ever reported, is heartbreaking.

Seniors deserve our care and respect. They’ve worked hard through their lives and it’s unimaginable that some of them are forced to endure their final years in fear. They are often facing so many challenges as it is – illness, increasing frailty, isolation, not to mention the deaths of long-time close friends. It’s a vulnerable season of life, and a time when they should feel safe, valued and protected.

According to the Alberta Government, elder abuse is often committed by someone known to the victim, such as a family member, friend, or caregiver. Approximately 25% of crimes against older adults are committed by family members, usually a spouse or adult child.

June 15th was World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Organizations from around the world, including governments, community agencies, educational institutions and professionals in the field of aging hold events to raise awareness of elder abuse.

Any senior can become a victim of elder abuse regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, income or education. There is limited data about elder abuse in Canada, and throughout the world. A key reason is that many cases go unreported. However, various studies indicate that between 4–8% of older adults in Canada

are likely to experience abuse.

Shame or guilt may stop a senior from revealing their abuse.

Sometimes victims simply do not have the capacity to report it. Whether a victim is unable or unwilling, some of the barriers to revealing abuse include fear; love for the abuser; lack of understanding or impairment; unaware of resource options or acceptance of abuse or neglect as normal behaviour.

Risk factors for abuse include history of spousal abuse, family dynamics, isolation, troubled relatives, friends or neighbours, inability to cope with long-term caregiving, institutional conditions, ageism and lack of knowledge about the aging process and society’s acceptance of violence and health and mobility issues.

Common signs include confusion, depression or anxiety, unexplained injuries, changes in hygiene, seeming fearful around certain people, and fear or worry when talking about money.

Alberta’s population, like the rest of Canada’s, is aging.

As of March 2011, there were about 410,000 seniors in Alberta but by 2031, when the last of the baby boomers reach 65 years of age, it is projected that there will be more than 923,000 seniors – meaning about one in five Albertans will be a senior.

The Alberta Elder Abuse Awareness Network web site facilitates the sharing of knowledge, resources and tools about elder abuse amongst people who work with seniors in Alberta. Visit www.albertaelderabuse.ca.

Reflecting on the horror happening in Hispaniola Imagine if Canada passed a law where anyone born after a certain year that was not of Canadian ancestry was suddenly stripped of his or her citizenship and had to reapply for citizenship, regardless of them being born in Canada.

Next, imagine all of those people being deported to countries where they don’t speak the language and have little or no remaining ties to the culture. As well, add in high levels of racism from the recipient countries towards people from Canada.

What you’re imagining is the current crisis happening to people of the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

As of May last year, anyone born after 1929 that is not of Dominican ancestry could be stripped of his or her citizenship and has to reapply for citizenship. This month was the deadline to secure (nearly impossible to access) docu-

Most of the people are Haitian, and the Dominican government stated this was an immigration cleansing. New York-based legal officer Cassandre Theano made a statement to parallel the current crisis in the Dominican to the ethnic cleansing of Jewish people in Nazi-occupied Germany prior to World War II. Many of the affected people have no ties to Haiti anymore, do not speak the language and are not being welcomed by the nation. Although the Haitian earthquake in 2010 pushed many refugees into the Do-

minican, thousands and thousands more people have been living in the country for generations.

These people call the Dominican home and now it will be taken from them.

Haiti does not have the resources to handle the immigrants and the volume of people being brought into the country will likely cause a refugee crisis.

Given the past history of racism in the Dominican towards Haitians and the brutality that was the Haitian occupation of the Dominican, people are worried and rightfully so.

The Dominican government is sending an incredibly large population to an immensely poor country that has no infrastructure or ability to receive such a population. The act is dangerous and irresponsible and is being condemned by leaders around the globe.

I have become close with a woman whose remarkable family has some deep

ties to a village near Puerto Plata, on the northern border of the Dominican Republic. We will be travelling to this village together in October with a group of volunteers to assist with a feeding program.

She is extremely worried for her loved ones. She put me in contact with her brother-in law who is in the village near Puerto Plata who has been updating me on the status and atmosphere of the area.

Bill Reimer, my contact in the Dominican said things have been very quiet in the village, which is almost as alarming as actual conflict. He said many of the people in the village are unsure of their fate and people are doing the only thing they can do – waiting.

cause the government is corrupt and has created a near-impossible system of accessing these documents.

For months people have been looped through an application process where ultimately less than 1,000 of the 250,000 ex-citizens have received new documentation.

June 17th was the date stated by the Dominican government for when they would begin the deportation process. Signs like the government purchasing a large amount of busses and sending large military presences to towns pointed towards what looked like mass round-ups of the excitizens.

An announcement came on June 21st that the Dominican government would be holding off deportations for 45 more days.

I’m disgusted and scared and the journalist in me is screaming for a plane ticket so I would feel less helpless. I’m nervous for my

friend and their family. Her adoptive children are from the Dominican Republic and from Haiti, so I see this issue as something that affects people in my community.

Here’s a brief reminder of the history between the Dominican Republic and Haiti - the Dominican government sponsored a genocide in 1937 that actually raised the water levels in the area because so much blood was spilled. It was entirely guided by racism towards those of Haitian descent. As well, during the Haitian occupation of the country, it was noted around the world as a brutal and hostile time period.

Things are not looking good for many people in Hispaniola. With such a history of violence between the two nations, one can only presume that this will end poorly.

The Red Deer man who was convicted of sexually assaulting a City senior in 2009 has had his dangerous offender status upheld by the Alberta Court of Appeal.

In 2012, Jesse Toews, 31, was deemed a dangerous psychopath, according to Justice Monica Bast. He was given an indeďŹ nite sentence at that time.

He was convicted of aggravated sexual assault against a local senior who was 77-years-old at the time. The incident happened in 2009.

An indeterminate sentence does not specify a length of sentence rather it is based on an inmate’s conduct and the likelihood of reoffending or conducting further violence. “There was a particular piece of evidence in the hearing regarding whether or not Mr. Toews should be considered a psychopath,â€? said Bast, at the time of her sentencing in 2012. “After reviewing the materials, it is my ďŹ nding that he should be considered a psychopath. “The unprovoked attack on a woman was brutal, coerced, savage and cruel,â€? said Bast. “I believe he poses a threat and that is based on evidence of Mr. Toews’ proven history. And I believe that there is substantial risk that he will reoffend. Treatment will be possible, but it’s merely a hope for the future. “My ďŹ nding of a dangerous offender status has been met.â€?

She added that is would not be realistic for Toews to

live in a halfway house or to be on a peace bond. “If he was not under 24-hour supervision it wouldn’t protect the public.�

Red Deer defense lawyer Arnold Piragoff who has represented Toews throughout his case asked Bast to make a recommendation that Toews be allowed to serve his time at a psychiatric centre in Saskatoon. “My client would like to receive treatment. He doesn’t want to go to jail and he has told me that he wants to be a better person when he gets out,� he said.

Bast said it would be inappropriate for her to make such a recommendation. “There could be a better place for Mr. Toews. I am not going to recommend that he goes to any particular place,� she said.

After the sentencing hearing Crown Prosecutor Anders Quist was pleased with the outcome. “This was a horriďŹ c attack, in broad daylight on an elderly woman. It’s good the court treats serious offences seriously,â€? he said. ““He will get periodic reviews and the parole board.â€?

He added the witnesses that testiďŹ ed during Toews’ trial were key. “We really appreciate the guts of the elderly victim as well as the others who testiďŹ ed during the course of this case.â€?

Meanwhile, the decision made by the Alberta Court of Appeal concluded that Bast was correct in all of her ďŹ ndings and in her sentencing. The appeal was dismissed.

Canada Day festivities at Bower Ponds

BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express Canada Day in Red Deer will be back this year at the traditional celebration site of Bower Ponds, hosting vendors, entertainers and a booming fireworks display.

From 11:30 a.m. until after 11 p.m. on July 1st, citizens are encouraged to head down to Bower Ponds to enjoy various ethnic food vendors, dancers, drummers, singers, comedians and more.

All ages welcome, however, pets are not permitted.

“It’s a lot of fun and it’s a great day. Ev-

eryone can sit on the grass and listen to some great music or watch the performers,” said Cultural Heritage Society Manager Delores Coghill.

“It’s just a really fun and relaxing day.”

She added about 10,000 people come to Bower Ponds throughout the day on Canada Day. The list of vendors at the ‘International Food Court’ includes dishes from nations such as Germany, France, Denmark, El Salvador, Ukraine, India and more.

Entertainment begins on the main stage at 11:30 a.m. and features various dance groups and styles, musicians including

Hospitals’ Lottery needs support Officials with Hospitals’ Lottery, a fundraiser of the Red Deer Regional Health Foundation, have extended the ticket deadline to June 28th in an attempt to sell out the Lottery. “Our Lottery has sold out the past three years,” said Cynthia de Boer, project officer for the Lottery. “Each year we work to create something new and exciting for our purchasers, and this year is no exception, but ticket sales are lagging and we are anxious for a sell out.”

Funds raised are scheduled for cardiac enhancements at the Hospital, relating to upgraded patient monitors.

“The number of patients requiring cardiac care is ever-increasing.

“It’s essential that healthcare providers not only have the best quality equipment, but enough equipment to satisfy the needs of every patient.”

The Red Deer hospital serves the Central Zone of over 470,000 people, with most cardiac cases landing here for treatment.

“We’re concerned,” said de Boer. “We are the only agency funding equipment at the hospital and with most hospital services already functioning at maximum we need to provide these enhancements. We are making a plea to the public to support us. We like to say that everyone who buys a ticket is a winner because everyone at some point requires the services of this hospital.”

New executive director at The Lending Cupboard

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express There’s a new executive director at The Lending Cupboard, the Red Deer-based not-for-profit society that lends out medical equipment at no cost across Central Alberta.

Dawna Morey began her new post with The Lending Cupboard on June 1st.

The organization, which was founded by Jaqui Joys in 2006, operates through support from Alberta Health Services and private donations. Joys also established AJ’s Loan Cupboard in Medicine Hat after losing her husband Alan to cancer in 2002.

According to The Lending Cupboard web site, there are about 7,500 pieces of medical equipment onhand, and staff process an average of 650 loans every month.

Clients served throughout Central Alberta, from July 1st, 2014 through to earlier this month number 3,223 people and counting, said Morey, adding the fiscal year con-

cludes on June 30th.

“In 2014, we lent out 1,127 pieces of equipment specifically for help with hip and knee replacements,” she said. Inventory pieces run the gamut from crutches, hydraulic lifts, canes and bath lifts to hospital beds, wheelchairs, bed rails and walkers. There are pieces suitable for children to seniors, sports injuries, those recovering from illness or surgery, end of life care, children, youth and adults and senior citizens.

“We’ve had clients who have taken a hospital bed so their loved one can be at home surrounded by family.”

Meanwhile, Morey is no stranger to the non-profit sector. She has served as executive director of various non-profits over the years, and has supported several local organizations plus others at the provincial and national level through her own consulting firm.

She is thrilled to have joined the Lending Cupboard, and is excited to see the full

potential of the organization realized in the coming years. “We have grown to be an organization with more than 70 volunteers,” she said.

“It’s also grown to the point where it has a substantial operating budget and there are paid staff as well as volunteers. Therefore, there are systems that need to be put in place and I’m excited about being able to do that. I’m also excited about how engaged the board is, too. And I’m also excited to see the community know more about this organization.”

To that end, she’d also like to form more partnerships throughout the community as well – for example, with local service clubs. “I also plan to be out at the Red Deer Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours, and I plan to make presentations at the service clubs, too.” Visits to local seniors’ facilities and other stakeholders will be scheduled as well.

Better signage for the organization, which is located at 5406 43 St., is also in the works as well.

Morey has also told the board that she sees such potential and need for The Lending Cupboard.

“There is a story in every piece of equipment borrowed,” she said. “Whether it be a person recouping from hip or knee surgery or a family member spending the last days of their lives surrounded by loved ones in their own homes, The Lending Cupboard plays a critical role in that experience.

“This organization thrives because of the incredible team of staff and volunteers that makes it possible to provide supports to people in their communities. That is powerful. For each piece of equipment that we lend out we can actually say that people are making a difference in other people’s lives.

“It is marvellous to see how things have evolved since Jaqui first laid the groundwork for her vision. We hope to continue to do her proud.”

100 Men Who Care of Red Deer supports CAANS

The Central Alberta AIDS Network Society (CAANS) will be receiving a cheque for $10,000 thanks to the generosity of 100 committed men.

100 Men Who Care is a networking and fundraising group who meet four times a year to generate awareness at the same time as raising a large donation for a local charity.

Three charities or nonprofits each present a fiveminute piece at the meetings and people vote to see which organization takes away the donation.

“The three charity choices tonight were fantastic. We had the Central Alberta AIDS Network So-

ciety (CAANS), the Ronald McDonald House - which we all know is a fantastic recipient – and we had the Notre Dame High School Grad service project for cystic fibrosis. The money would have gone there if not to CAANS, who took the donation of the evening,” said founder of 100 Men Who Care Jest Sidloski. “It went well and people stick around. The great thing about this is not just about giving the money to the charity - I wanted to think about what else we could do,” Sidloski said.

“Some places do it in a concert hall or something but I thought about having a social element with something as simple as a beer and a place for the guys to hang out after and network. That is just as important to me because we can continue changing Red Deer for the better.”

Although only one of three groups walks away with a monetary donation, the other two charities or non-profits benefit by having a platform to share their ideas to people who have committed to being engaged in the community.

Sidloski said he would love to see the project grow beyond 100 people, as their meeting location allows for up to 250 and more contacts means more change in the community.

“It’s called 100 men and I’m perfectly happy stop-

ping there and donating $10,000. That’s incredible and I’m happy with that – however, you can always grow. We would like to see more people take part in it.

Every time it gets put in the paper, or is shared on social media more and more people come to us,” he said.

“It’s not just about $10,000 or us giving. The equally important part of this is the networking.

You’ll see men hang around for an hour and if you listen to the conversations – they’re about Red Deer and charities or groups and they’re collaborating on how else they can help.”

These groups are able to facilitate a way for people who are passionate about social change to network with people that they maybe never have. It opens doors for community relationships and partnerships.

“The men there want to help – they are there for that reason.

“We’re finding that guys come up after and look for contact information for those groups to see how they can help. Nobody leaves empty handed – yes, someone leaves with a financial donation but the other groups leave knowing that 100 socially interested people are going to be invested in spreading that message.”

Local celebrations of St. Jean Baptiste Day Today is St. Jean Baptiste Day, the feast day for the patron saint of Canadian francophones. The day has also taken on strong, secular symbolism and is the major nationalist holiday in Quebec (La Fete Nationale). Francophones have been an integral part of the history of Central Alberta.

Many of the early fur traders, explorers, freighters and missionaries were French-speaking. In the early 1880s, a group of settlers from Manitoba established farms, a sawmill, ferry, threshing business and other ventures along the Red Deer and Blindman Rivers, east of Red Deer.

A number of these settlers were French-speaking Metis. In the fall of 1908, the Peres de Ste. Marie de Tinchebray, in collaboration with the Filles de la Sagesse (Daughters of Wisdom) built a large mission centre on the top of the North Hill.

DAWE Church, St. Mary’s College for young men who were planning on seeking the priesthood, and a small cottage hospital.

The francophone population of North Red Deer was further bolstered by the establishment of the Great West Lumber Company on the north bank of the Red Deer River. Many of the employees of the company were from the Frenchspeaking parts of Quebec, Ontario and the northeastern United States.

However, another Central Alberta community with a francophone population was Sylvan Lake.

The number of Frenchspeaking people living at the Lake was large enough that the original Sylvan Lake Times newspaper was published half in French and half in English in 1913.

A number of families came out from Quebec, and were therefore familiar with the St. Jean Baptiste tradition. These included the Armeneaus, Dallaires, Vasseurs, Rousseaus and Monettes. Several of the families who settled at Sylvan Lake had come out from France. These included the Archambaults, who started the Post Office and ran a hotel, the Ballus Loquets, Raymonds, and the LeSauniers. Rounding out the mix were Belgian and Swiss families such as the Rosses, Gerards and the Thevenez.

By 1912, it was evident the number of Catholics had grown to the extent that a church was needed.

Moreover, with the freewheeling pastimes often associated with a summer resort, Father Henri Voisin, head the priests of Ste. Marie de Tinchebray, wrote that, “The time had come to enliven the completely materialistic atmosphere by the salutary presence of a church.”

Our Lady of The Assumption Roman Catholic Church was consequently

built on a piece of hillside land donated by Alexandre Loiselle. Father P.J. Chauvin, one of the Tinchebray Fathers, was the first priest.

He was frequently assisted in his duties by Father Voisin and other members of the S.M.T. order.

With the outbreak of the First World War in the summer of 1914, a great many of the French and Belgians rushed back to the homelands to defend them against the invading Germany armies. Their families soon followed them overseas. Later, many more men enlisted in the Canadian military and left for active service in the War. By the later part of the First World War, Father Henri Voisin estimated that a full third of his parishioners had left, almost all of them permanently.

The community was shattered. For a great many years, Our Lady of the Assumption Church remained only a small fraction of the size it had enjoyed before the War. Hence, St. John Baptiste celebrations were limited

DON’T DRINK & DRIVE Gearing up for a safe season on roads, waterways and trails Through Campaign 911, MADD Canada and Allstate Insurance Company of Canada encourage Canadians to keep roads, waterways and trails crash free all summer long.

MADD Canada and Allstate Insurance Company of Canada are reminding everyone about the risks of operating any motor vehicle while impaired and the important role every person can play in preventing impaired driving.

“The spring and summer months are a time when millions of Canadians travel to and from cottages and campgrounds, enjoy time on the water, spend warm evenings on the patios of neighbourhood bars and entertain family and friends at backyard barbecues,” said MADD Canada National President Angeliki Souranis.

“Unfortunately, long weekends and summer months are also a time when the risk of impaired driving increases. We can all play a role in reducing that risk.”

Help prevent impaired driving: Don’t drive a car, boat, ATV or any other vehicle while impaired; Don’t get into a vehicle

operated by someone who is impaired; Call 911 if you see a driver you suspect is impaired.

MADD Canada’s 2015 Campaign 911 program, reminds people about the dangers of operating any motor vehicle while impaired and encourages people to report suspected impaired drivers and impaired boaters to police.

The program runs all year round, but MADD Canada promotes it heavily over the spring and summer. The 2015 Campaign 911 program is sponsored by Allstate Insurance Company of Canada and Maritime Ontario Freight Lines Ltd. “Allstate Canada is proud to work alongside MADD Canada in this effort to make our roads and communities safer,” said Allstate Canada President and Chief Executive Officer John O’Donnell. “The summer months see some of the most severe collisions on our roadways and sadly, many of these involve impaired drivers. Everyone can play a part in preventing impaired driving crashes this summer. Plan ahead for a sober ride home when you’re going to be drinking, or call 911 to report any suspected impaired driv-

MADD Canada Chapters and Community Leaders join their local police and other partners to promote Campaign 911.

Through signs, billboards, public service announcements and other materials, the partners inform the public about road safety, the possible signs of an impaired driver or impaired boater, and tips on what to do if you spot one. It was also recently North American Safe Boating Awareness Week. While most people know the dangers of driving a car while impaired, many do not think about the dangers

of alcohol consumption on the water or the danger of operating a boat while impaired. Yet, alcohol plays a role in 40% of the estimated 150 recreational boating deaths that occur each year. Alcohol diminishes judgment, reduces motor skills, slows reaction times and accelerates hypothermia. MADD Canada extended its Campaign 911 program to the waterways in 2010.

With generous funding and support from Transport Canada, we have worked with police services, regions, municipalities and marine organizations to place 424 Report Impaired Boaters – Call 911 signs at harbours, marinas and boat launches across the country.

An additional 400 signs will be placed in 2015 and 2016.

TRAVEL New to cruising? Tips for making the best choice Oh the greenhorn. The newbie. The average couple that is new to cruising.

We see them weekly. Young, old, single, married with four kids, on a budget (or not) they are all somewhat the same.

As they stand outside pondering the deals on our monthly promotional board, they walk in sheepishly full of curiosity.

They wonder, ‘What’s the deal with cruising?’ This is when we smile, ask them if they’d enjoy a coffee.

Let’s sit down and maul over some questions.

The world of cruising can be daunting for the newbie.

Where do they start? Well it starts with some research and we hear many questions and try and make sense of what may seem to be a cumbersome ordeal to get through. There are numerous variables but here are five questions that we receive the most. Now to the seasoned cruiser they may seem trivial, but for all of us who have been there done that, you have to start somewhere.

Is it all-inclusive?

Nope. However, there are certain lines that are all-inclusive. It’s only a matter of time when they mainstream it. The following is what you receive with your cruisefare: accommodation, all meals (seated in main dining and buffet style), non-alcoholic beverages with meals, onboard activities, all entertainment including stage production shows!

The following is not included in your cruisefare: gratuities (ranges from $12$15pp/pd), specialty dining, alcohol, excursions, and casino.

There are many deals on to promote the added expense. Many times you may be able to receive complimentary gratuities or drink packages for free. The value in purchasing a cruise vacation vs. a land allinclusive is endless. You cannot even compare the two vacations.

Where’s the best place to be located on a ship?

Do you feel it move? Yes! You feel it move.

To be upfront though, it is absolutely not comparable to the boat you may have went out on that bobbed up and down in the waters off of San Diego while trying to catch a glimpse of a whale on your excursion.

These are enormous ships, which are equipped with state-of-the-art technology to keep the bobbing up and down to a minimum.

ON THE SEA – There are endless options to choose from when seeking the best cruise ship experience.

In the end, mid-ship is where you’d like to be. You are located in the centre of it all and you would be located in the area where you’ll have less movement.

The second best is the aft (or back) of the ship. The benefits there are you can enjoy the possible views of dolphins playing and jumping in the ship’s wake.

Last is the forward (front). There you have anchors, and you may feel slightly more the dips and bobs of the ship. However, just a heads-up, some love the forward.

The feeling of the ship moving actually produces a better sleep for many.

Are all cruise lines the same? No! Absolutely not!

Each cruise line is tailored differently dependant on the clients’ needs and expectation. Parents taking their three active teenagers on a cruise certainly would want to consider Royal Caribbean because

of the endless activities like wake boarding and zip lining.

The foodie couple who enjoy endless choices for dining may consider Norwegian.

When should I book?

This is a common question with even the seasoned traveler. We can’t stress enough that the sooner is the better. For example, Alaska, although some newbies believe that Alaska itineraries are all about the older demographic, it is the wrong outlook.

ENTERTAINMENT Annual Gospel Music Celebration set for Centrium Several top Southern Gospel groups to be featured at popular event

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express Gospel music fans will soon be streaming to the Centrium to hear some of the finest artists in the genre today as Canada’s Gospel Music Celebration runs July 9th-11th.

Events will be held at the Centrium, kicking off Thursday. The box office opens at 4 p.m. as does the exhibit hall, with concerts running from 6 to 11 p.m. This summer marks the 16th year the festival, which has run under different titles, has been held in Red Deer.

Wayne Dyck has been overseeing the event for the past 10 years.

He said this year will see the return of past favourite groups with a sprinkling of new faces as well. Last year, each evening attracted about 4,000 people.

“Red Deer is an excellent spot for this kind of event,” said Dyck.

“It’s easy to get to, it’s convenient – it’s not a really big city, but it’s got all of the right mixes of features for the people who come to the celebration. Westerner Park has also been a wonderful venue, because it suits this event to a ‘T’.

The people there are exceptional and the hospitality is great,” he said. “It just seems to be a natural fit for this type of event.”

Featured performers this year include the Collingsworth Family, the Mark Trammel Quartet, the Booth Brothers, Legacy V, The Young Street Vocal Band, Three and Company, Greater Vision, Triumphant Quartet, Sweet Saturday, the Amundruds, Penny Loafers, the Ball Brothers, Roset, The Banksons, Potters Clay, Double Portion and the Daae Family.

“We realize it has a large entertainment factor but we are really driven more by the style of the harmony-type music,” said Dyck. “We try to create an uptown, camp-meeting feel to it and we lean heavily to ministry and

a church service environment as well.

“It’s driven by a lot of tradition, too,” said Dyck, who also performs with the Young Street Vocal Band which is based on the west coast. “It’s about the strengths of our heritage. We are also driven by our vision of maintaining this Gospel music.”

Other highlights include the Showcase Spectacular called ‘A Tribute to Hymns’ on July 10th at 1 p.m. in the Centrium.

This special event will join Gerald Wolfe with Kim Collingsworth at the piano.

Another Showcase Spectacular runs July 11th at 1 p.m. in the Centrium. This one is called A Collingsworth Homecoming.

“Since their first engagement together as musicians for a church camp in Petersburg, Michigan in 1986 until now, the ministry God has given Phil and Kim has expanded and flourished. Their passion has become a full-time livelihood that involves their entire family,” notes the web site.

Dyck said it’s always a good time to catch up with artists, such as the aforementioned Collingsworth Family, who will be featured at this particular Showcase Spectacular.

“They’re grandparents now, so people also like to hear them tell their story and bring folks up-todate on how things are all going.”

Morning chapel runs Friday and Saturday at 9:30 a.m. with Leon Throness in the Parkland Pavilion with musical guests Legacy Five on Friday and the Booth Brothers on Saturday.

Ron Booth Sr., Ronnie and Michael’s father, immersed his sons in Southern Gospel during the time he sang with the Rebel’s Quartet and other groups. They sang with their father as ‘Ron Booth and the Booth Brothers’ until 1998 when Ron Sr. left the road.

Ronnie and Michael renamed the group and continued on as The Booth Brothers.

Road Hammers featured at Westerner Days Country rockers The Road Hammers are gearing up to perform during the annual Westerner Days, with a show slated for July 17th. Doors open at 7 p.m. with showtime set for 8 p.m. on the ATB Financial Main Stage.

This is a free concert with gate admission.

Founded by Canadian Country singer/songwriter Jason McCoy in 2004, The Road Hammers’ fired-up shows and blend of ‘southern fried rock and country soul’ have earned them a reputation as one of the highest energy bands in Canadian country.

The idea was born out of McCoy’s desire to develop a project where he could sing a style of music which formed him as an artist, while paying tribute to the men and women who call the highways of the world their home.

The band’s self-titled debut disc was released in 2005, followed by The Roadhammers II in 2009.

Their latest disc, Wheels, was released last year and the energy doesn’t waver for a second, from the

scorching opening title track to a superb, rollicking cover of I’ve Been Everywhere.

Mud is pretty tough to resist as well complete with its slamming guitars and impeccable harmonies as is the aptly-titled Hillbilly Highway featuring guest Colt Ford.

McCoy, whose first solo project was released in 2005, found kindred spirits in Clayton Bellamy who hails from Bonnyville, who also provided the soulful fuel that kicks the Hammers into overdrive and Chris Byrne whose high harmonies and solid bass lines are both the foundation and finishing touches which define the sound that is The Road Hammers.

For McCoy, an interest in music came early. At 16, he won a talent contest which took him to Nashville to record an album, and was put in touch with songwriter Ray Griff.

He kept writing, sending his work to MCA Canada which signed him in 1994.

He cut a few songs in Nashville, which landed on a compilation. Some of the

tracks charted at radio, and MCA gave the green light for a full-length disc.

Bellamy’s latest solo disc, Five Crow Silver, hosts an array of special guests on the record including Bobby Keys (The Rolling Stones, The Who, Eric Clapton), Tom Wilson (Blackie and the Rodeo Kings) and Garth Hudson (The Band).

Meanwhile, Westerner Days kicks off in Red Deer next month and officials promise this year’s events will include fun for the whole family. Westerner Days takes place July 15th19th with the annual pancake breakfast at Bower Mall on July 11th. Fairgoers can purchase a Ride All Day pass as well as a MEGA Pass, which is new this year.

The MEGA Pass is a multi-day pass to get patrons into the fair grounds.

It does not include rides or parking. Cost for the pass is $30. The Ride All Day pass is $34 and includes gate admission and unlimited midway rides for any one day of the fair. This pass does not include parking.

All concerts are free of charge with gate admission and seating is available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Tips for successful weight loss in men Today I have got three fantastic tips for weight loss which we use in our studio with clients every day. These tips have got the best results for the least effort for our guys, so we advise them to all our male clients. Have a quick read below and see what results you can get for yourself.

1. Limit processed carbohydrates - we have found that most just simply men don’t want to count calories or start weighing food. Therefore, simple steps are the way to go. One of the most effective weight loss methods to start with is reducing processed carbohydrate foods. These include bread, pasta, cakes, biscuits and the like. You don’t have to avoid them completely, but limit them to once or twice a week. I’ll not bore you with the scientific details, but these foods are one of the biggest causes of belly bulge around today.

2. Eat whole natural foods - whole natural foods include chicken, beef, fish, vegetables, fruit, eggs and nuts. They should roughly look like their original state. For example - chicken fillets are great, chicken nuggets are not. Natural foods are fullto-brim with healthy nutritional ingredients.

To help you with your meals, a third of your plate should be filled with a healthy meat, and the rest should mostly be vegetables or fruit. This is a very simple tip, but very effective for weight loss.

3. Combine weight training and cardio - a combination of weight training and cardio is perfect for losing weight. The two forms of exercise have different effects on the body. When you use both together, you are in weight loss heaven. Cardio can be anything from running outside, to using a gym machine inside. For weight training, you don’t need to go overboard, a set of dumbbells will suffice if you cannot get to a gym. I have made a simple workout to get you started below.

Preventing the dangers of burnout in caregivers Here’s a possible Trivial Pursuit question, ‘What’s the fastest growing unpaid profession in North America?’ I admit I wouldn’t have known the answer. But, according to the Family Caregiver Alliance, more than 65.7 million Americans, that’s 29% of the population, provide care to a family member, loved one or friend who is ill disabled or aged. But when does such labour of love trigger burnout anger in the caregiver?

A report from Johns Hopkins University states, “The average unpaid, or informal, caregiver is a 46 year old female with a full or part-time job who spends about 20 hours

But for those caring for a loved one older than 65 the average age is 63. Unfortunately, one-third of these caregivers are also in poor health.

energy made on some caregivers triggers a reaction, similar to the last straw that finally breaks the camel’s back. This crisis occurs when they have neglected their own health for too long.

Caring for others is also a dangerous job.

For example, in one study caregivers, age 66 and over, had a 63% higher mortality rate than non- caregivers of the same age.

The physical task facing caregivers can be overwhelming.

But according to experts it’s the mental toll that is more likely to bring caregivers to their knees. They suffer from loneliness, anxiety, fear of the future, depression and at times anger at the person they’re caring for.

It’s small wonder that they require more anti-depressants and anti-anxiety drugs than the general population.

So how can caregivers cope with physical and mental stress day after day? First, it’s vital that they don’t put their own health at the bottom of the list. This is a sure formula for Burnout 101.

Family members must keep a wary eye on the caregiver and realize there’s a crisis in the making if they notice them reaching for alcohol, having difficulty concentrating, suffering from insomnia or having thoughts of suicide. This is a time when other family members must share the burden.

Caregivers who remain silent and un-

complaining are quicker to suffer burnout.

It’s important for them to ‘let it out’ with a family member, friend, clergy or a counselor.

It’s also prudent for them to get some form of exercise daily. And to find time during the day for something they enjoy, whether it be reading a book or watching a movie.

Caregivers must be ready for emergencies.

This means trying to plan ahead for the dangers that could occur in the community.

For example, you may live in an area that is prone to sudden snow storms. What will happen at subzero temperatures if electrical power shuts down for days?

Others who reside in tornado regions need to plan an escape route and how to handle someone in a wheelchair. Moreover, even with a plan of action, you won’t get far if the car hasn’t an ample supply of gas.

Care giving involves so much work and stress it’s no wonder the handler suffers Burnout 101. The bad news is this problem is going to get worse with an aging population.

So far I’ve been lucky that I or family members have not had to face this added stress, another factor that may have added to my longevity!

SPORTS Four Nations Cup set for Red Deer next week

BY JENNA SWAN Red Deer Express Rugby fans from far and wide will gather in Red Deer on Canada Day for the 2015 Four Nations Cup, a world super series between the national Canadian, U.S. British, and Kiwi women’s rugby teams.

Two rugby matches will be held at the Titans’ Rugby Park in Red Deer County as part of the series, which will also host games in Calgary and Edmonton over the course of a week.

Organizers invite Central Albertans to celebrate their heritage as well as the Canadian national rugby team by wearing red and bringing out their Canadian flags, as they face off against their age-old rivals – the U.S. national women’s rugby team.

“If you go to a national level soccer or rugby game anywhere else in the world, people are going to fully dress up to support their nation,” said Bill Bowd, head coach of the Titans’ women’s rugby team.

“In North America it isn’t always like that, but we’re hoping that with it being Canada Day people will show their support and help us bring out the patriotism.

“If you go to a rugby game in England, there’s not a fan in their parks who doesn’t have a hat, shirt, jersey or flag with them to support their team – they really show their country pride and what better day to show our pride than on Canada Day.” The Four Nations Cup will kick off in Calgary on Saturday, June 27th at the Calgary Rugby Park where Team Canada will meet the New Zealand Black Ferns. A few days later all four teams will make the trip to Red Deer for Canada Day where the evening will kick-off at 4 p.m. with England and New Zealand taking to the pitch first.

The game will be followed by the battle for North America, with the second game of the day’s double-header kicking off at 6:30 p.m.

“England, Canada, the U.S. and New Zealand are four of the eight best women rugby teams in the world,” explained Bowd.

“This is the highest level of women’s rugby you can make it into and you are going to see some incredible athletes doing some incredible things.”

Bowd said tents and benching have been added to the field to provide for visiting fans with a concession also available.

He added the reasoning for the game coming to Red Deer was due largely in part to Graeme Moffat – a former coach of the

The evening’s first local win came from Anatolli Chmut, 26, originally from Kyiv, Ukraine – currently training out of Kensei MMA in Red Deer. The rookie fighter took down Edmonton based Travis Christensen after a menacing barrage of inside hooks at 1:41 early in the first round from Chmut.

Williams landed a strong, well-executed arm triangle choke forcing Gonzales to tap out at 2:11 in the first round.

Brent Harvie (3-1) out of Kensei and Jesse Fox (4-6) out of Arashi-Do were the next local fighters to hit the octagon going head to head with both fighters returning after a number of years absence from the cage.

The two-round battle ended with a win for Harvie after securing a deep triangle choke on Fox landing him the win via submission.

The last local win of the night came out of the Wolfgang Jannsen vs. Curtis Demarce match up.

Jannsen, who trains out of Arashi-Do, was up against Edmonton-based Demarce.

The fight went the full three rounds as the two experienced fighters put their skills and endurance to the test.

Jannsen executed a strong control of the cage against Demarce and continued to do so throughout the night.

Despite a few good hooks from Demarce (14-12), who was the veteran fighter in the cage, Jannsen ended with a unanimous decision from the judges landing him 5-1 record.

Event organizers said overall the fighting championship went well, with their team already building hype on social media towards the championship’s 10th card coming up this September.

I think that all is going to be OK but it doesn’t hurt to be a little cautious when it comes to spending – the exception to this is when you are spending money on your home for income or sale potential.

Many of us live in a home which is too large for our needs or have extra space that may be just what someone is looking to rent. Garage spaces, garden plots and even general storage are in high demand.
