Kyah Wiget Education Society would like to congratulate all of the Moricetown graduates and recognize their achievements! We are very pleased to have three iCount and 13 University College Entrance Program graduates. We are very proud of each and every one of you and of the diversity of your interests, talents and aspirations. As students, you have learned that education requires commitment, dedication and focus which you have clearly

demonstrated. You have highlighted that a bridge between First Nations culture and academic learning contributes to long-term success for our community. Equally important is the guidance and support from family, friends, teachers and community which has contributed to your success. We wish you all the best and will continue to support you as you embark on your future paths. Diane Mattson, Administrator, Kyah Wiget Education Society

Principal’s Message

Anthony Onderwater

The students chose as their graduation theme, Psalm 103 and especially verse one “Praise the LORD, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name.” (NIV 1984). In this Psalm we express and sing, with King David, an exhortation and encouragement to our souls to praise God. To help stimulate that praise David reflects on the incredible riches of God’s gifts, on the work God has done in history, and on the nature of God. Verse one is a wonderful expression of a desire to live life as an endless paean of praise to God. The praise moves from

Jodi Fennema

Juliana Stoffels

Nelson Kanis

Michael Vanveldhuizen

what God has done for David personally, to what God did for the nation and finally to God’s sovereignty over the world. Graduates as you go onward into post-secondary life our prayer is that you will indeed praise God unceasingly, that you will, like David, see the many reasons to praise Him. May you also in turn encourage, not only your own soul, but the souls of those you come into contact with to be holy because He is holy. Derek Stoffels Principal

Ebenezer Valedictorian Good evening ladies and gentlemen. Thank you all for coming to celebrate this day here with us; friends, family, and the teachers here are looking especially excited. No doubt happy for us. Guess What?! We made it! I don’t think we ever thought we would be here! Thirteen years is a long time! I know a lot of parents are thinking, “You think that’s bad, you just wait.” Like 13 isn’t long enough to wait. Anyways, out of all those years do you know what the hardest thing to write was? …. Other than GTP? This speech. Do you know why? The previous grad classes stole all the good metaphors! “Life is a rose, life is a journey, or life is stepping stones, etc.” All graduates want to be different, and in that way we are all exactly the same. I did find one however, so here is the story of the grad class of 2015. Once upon a time, in 1997, 11 beautiful children were born. They were blessed to grow up in good Christian homes. From the time they could understand, they were taught about their loving, just and powerful Father in heaven. When they reached the privileged age of five, nine of these kids were grouped together in kindergarten. They had three other classmates at one point, but these other students ended up leaving. They also had two additions. A loud addition was added in grade one, and then one vibrant addition in grade five. These 11 kids didn’t get to choose what types of characters they had to spend 12 years of their life with; they got what was given. And what a force they were to be reckoned with. From the mysterious types, to the flamboyant types, from the quiet types, to the ones who need to be taught the definition of the word quiet. From the hardworking to the “…what class have I been in for the past 20 minutes?” From the hilarious ones to the gullible ones, and from the punctual ones to the procrastinators. They were quite the diverse group! They grew up together, played together, learned together, laughed together, fought together, got up to no good together, and most importantly, they grew together in Christ. As they grew they were educated in science, math, language arts, penmanship (show of

Breanna Berends

hands of the people who still handwrite? Me neither.), all so that they would reach the pinnacle of their life. Grade six graduation. What a special and important day this was for these 11 grown up kids, and what an exhausting road it was! Seven years! Little did they know that they were going to go from kings and queens of elementary to the little kids of high school, and had to start the whole process over again. In grade seven, they hoped that their grade 12 graduation would be the climax, of their seemingly endless story. If you haven’t guessed it yet, those charming kids are us, and we are here before you all six years later, alive and well. As we neared our final years of school we have come to realize that we are only done part one of our story. It’s called the Prologue. Our education in school was the foundation needed to continue part two in the real world, living as prophets, priest and kings for God, while looking forward to part three; eternal life on the new earth with God. And we thought 12 years was long! We want to take some moments to thank some very special people in our lives, placed there by God. First, our parents. You didn’t get to choose who you got, and worse yet, you had to like us! Our teachers, they got paid to deal with us, but you just got … us. And if we were really bad at school, the teachers could just send us home, for you to deal with. So thank-you for loving us, for disciplining us and teaching us in the way of Christ, and for helping us develop into who we are today. We like to think you did a good job. Second, our pastors and teachers. Thank-you for putting up with us; even when we were impolite, late, rude, obnoxious, and downright terrible. We, also, apologize for any stress caused. We realize you didn’t have a choice in what kind of characters you got placed with, either. Thank-you for teaching and challenging us in the way of the Lord in your own way. You were a major tool that God used in the molding of who we are today. Even when we didn’t act like it, we really did appreciate ... most lessons. Most importantly, we would like to thank our Father in Heaven, the Author of all our Stories. Thank-you for making us your children and loving us as such. Thank-you for the characters you have put in our lives and will continue to place in our lives, molding us and shaping us according to your perfect plan. We are sorry for when we fail, for we know we are sinful and we pray that you will lead and guide us in the next chapters of our life. We know that there will be many more trials, big and small; please help us accept whatever may come, and as it says in Psalm 103:1, let “all that is within me bless His holy name. Thank-you

Bulkley Valley Christian School Principal’s message

God’s blessings to all those graduating from BVCS and the other schools in the beautiful Bulkley Valley. June is a bittersweet month for teachers, parents, and students. It’s a time to reflect on the educational journey of students who have contributed in very significant ways to our school. This comes with a certain degree of sadness with knowing that these students will not be back in September. But it’s also a time of celebration, as these students begin a new stage in life. For the staff at BVCS, our prayer is that the wisdom

and knowledge you have gained in the past 13 years – from BVCS, from your family, and from your churches – will assist you to live a life pleasing to the Creator. Furthermore, our hope is that you can experience the pure joy that comes from delighting in the goodness of God’s world, and that you will find a way to use your many talents and gifts to serve others. When you started school in September of 2001 Smithers was very different. • School District #54 had Chandler Park Middle School for their Grade 7 and 8 students and BVCS had two campuses. Elementary was behind Tim Horton's and the current campus was just for High School. • SuperValu (Extra Foods) was owned by the Goodacre family and smoking in restaurants and bars was still allowed, in a designated areas. • There were no squash courts at the BV Regional Pool, although the vision wascoming together.

• •

Highspeed internet was just a dream for the High Speed Working Group of Smithers. Haida Gwaii was known as the Queen Charlotte Islands and security at the airport, for a few more weeks, was much easier to get through. Lower tuition fees and Post Secondary funding were hot topics for the provincial government, but you could buy a 3 bdrm starter home for $56,500. There were no opening night movies. Rush Hour 2 was played at the Roi Theatre September 15, more than a month after the premiere August 3.

When you started kindergarten in September 2001, these were the issues of the day. • Neglected and Abandoned animals were becoming a big problem. Concerned residents formed the Hazelton Animal Care and Control Committee in October to tackle the problem, with the goal of building a shelter. • The SCI Carnaby mill closed, causing distress to many, as the clock ticked on their credit line. August 27 the Hazelton Economic Action Team held a demonstration at the Kispiox Forest District office and at the mill site. September 20 contractors blocked the Provincial Government building in Smithers. The ongoing lumber trade

Many of you now face big decisions about where your next chapter will take you. Amid the din of transition, I encourage you to take time to reflect on what you have just accomplished. It is no small feat. Remember too that you come from a special place, a community full of great people who have your back. Remember that you belong. Keep in touch. We are all so proud. You will likely encounter many forks in the road of life, and face some difficult decisions and trying circumstances. It is important to remember that life will throw curveballs at all of us, and it is most important to face adversity with courage and resolve. District of New Hazelton On behalf of the District of New Hazelton, I would like to offer congratulations to the graduating classes of 2015! What an exciting time in your lives as you go forward into the big world that awaits you beyond high school corridors. There will be tough times – find someone special to help you through them, fun times – enjoy them, times when you fail – it happens to us all, learn from it and become a better person, and most of all, exciting times – revel in them!!! Take this opportunity to grow and become a better person. Choose your friends by the size of their hearts and step up to the plate for them when times are the toughest. There will be times in your life when bullies may threaten, stand up and don’t back down, you are a better person and now is the time to show it! Take time to stop and smell the roses, life begins to go faster the older you get, the time to enjoy it is now! Congratulations once again, graduates and remember ... Take action! Every story you've ever connected with, every leader you've ever admired, every puny little thing that you've ever accomplished is the result of taking action. You have a choice. You can either be a passive victim of circumstance or you can be the active hero of your own life. – Whitford Gail Lowry, Mayor

An effective cover letter should be concise, conveying an applicant's work history and goals in a few paragraphs or less. The following are some additional ways men and women can craft effective cover letters. • Address a specific person when possible. When responding to a job posting that listed a specific contact, address your cover letter to that person rather than beginning the letter with, "Dear Sir or Madam" or "To Whom It May Concern." Personalize each cover letter you write so the hiring manager does not get the feeling that you are sending out cover letters en masse. Make sure names are spelled correctly and job titles are accurate. • State your purpose early on. The purpose of your letter, which is to state the job you're seeking, should be made clear early on. Hiring managers often handle the vetting process for a host of positions at their companies, so the earlier the hiring manager knows which position you're applying for the better. Hiring managers may become frustrated when applicants don't make their intentions clear or do so in the final paragraph instead of the first. • Explain why you are a qualified candidate. While it's good to note your work history, your resume will do the bulk of that legwork. A cover letter is your opportunity to show how your work history makes you a qualified candidate for a specific position. Remember to be concise but relate a specific example that illustrates how your work history would help you thrive in the position for which you're applying. • Exhibit some knowledge about the company to which you're applying. An effective cover letter should help you stand out among your fellow applicants, and expressing some knowledge about the organization can do just that. The goal here is to illustrate how you and the organization are a good fit, so you don't need to go overboard or be too specific. But hiring managers are likely to be more impressed by applicants who do their homework and show a knowledge of the company than applicants who submit a form cover letter where the company is scarcely mentioned. • Be cordial in your closing. A cover letter should close with a cordial request for an interview or a friendly way of indicating you look forward to a company's response to your application. In addition, thank the reader for his or her time and mention you would be delighted to answer any questions he or she may have. An effective cover letter can go a long way toward making a strong first impression on a prospective employer. Men and women should look at their cover letters as their first opportunities to connect with a company and write their letters accordingly.

Congratulations Grads of 2015!

All the best in your future plans and may you be blessed in your success.

When you started school in September of 2001 the Twin Towers in New York were still standing, Haida Gwaii was still the Queen Charlotte Islands, smoking in restaurants and bars was being debated, and high speed internet was a dream. September 11, 2001 the world changed forever with the terrorist attacks. You probably remember well exactly where you were and what you were doing when you heard, even though you were so young. Immediately the world stopped. Air traffic was grounded everywhere for days. September 13 Smithers welcomed their first plane in the aftermath, with only 15 passengers on the fully booked flight. The second fully booked plane to land had only four of the passengers. Many were choosing not to fly in those rough times. You've watched the security measures at airports change over your school career as the world tried to recover. History was made October 9 and 10 when the BVTF held a province-wide strike vote on collective bargaining for the first time. During your education you would see the debate about the government-enforced stipulations on bargaining rage on. Still today teachers fight to have class size

limits part of the deal. School District #54 started the year scrambling for gas for their buses as they were a victim of theft. The West side of Lake Kathlyn, with Kroker, Glacier View, Horlings, Silvern and Pinecrest Road, was added to the bus routes. The Dze L K'ant Friendship Centre held it's first Aboriginal Education Parenting Workshop November 7-9. The Smithers Library got a facelift and Chandler Park Middle School was where you expected to spend your Grade 7 and 8 years. If you lived in Telkwa, you were under a boil water advisory. Water continues to be a concern for Telkwa. Safeway had just separate from the Zellers mall into a new building, and we were getting used to not having Jeans North and Wayside Foods convenience store. Mayor of Smithers was Brian Northup and Sharon Hartwell was mayor of Telkwa. Dennis Mackay was our MLA. And Stephen Harper was an Alliance Party Leadership Candidate who would speak at the Aspen in Smithers January 4, 2002.

Make sure your resume doesn't cost you a job

Writing a resume is an aspect of the job hunt that can stoke your nerves. Men and women may pour over job timelines and skill summaries for hours in an effort to ensure they have included the right mix of information to get noticed. Though resume writing has changed considerably over the years, some conventional wisdom about resumes still prevails, and how closely potential applicants adhere to these rules goes a long way toward determining if they earn a chance at an interview. • Me, myself and I: While the resume should showcase your professional accomplishments, it also should showcase how your skills relate to the job you're applying for. This way the company understands you have researched the position and are in tune with what they're looking for in an applicant. • One document for all responses: A resume is not a static document. It needs to change depending on the job you're applying to. Although there will be certain information that can remain the same, update the skills and other information based on each position. • One page is best: Applicants were long told to keep their resumes concise, limiting the document to just one page. However, if your experience is extensive or one page cannot contain a long job history, don't

be afraid to submit a two-page resume. • Failing to be selective: You need not include your entire job history on a resume, especially if certain past positions you have held are completely irrelevant to the position for which you are applying. Don't be afraid of job gaps, either. Many of today's recruiters understand that the changing economy can make it challenging to maintain steady employment. • Overembellishment: Do not embellish your skills. Always be open and honest on your resume. You may be asked to prove you can perform certain tasks, and if you cannot back up what is included on a resume, you will have wasted your time and the time the interviewer spent discussing his company's opening with you. • Imperfections: A resume is a reflection of you, so one with typographical errors or a poor layout is never acceptable. Ensure your resume is as professional and error-free as possible. Have a friend or a proofreader look it over before distributing. • Paid positions: Internships or volunteer work are perfectly acceptable to include on a resume, particularly for younger applicants who may not have a wealth of professional experience. Include a mix of information on the resume that will reflect your versatility.

We are proud of our grads and all who have worked so hard to achieve this milestone

Graduation Celebration! | 31

After 13 years of school life, which have included: entering school for the very first time, sharing lunches and snacks, discovering homework, attending sports events, plays, or musicals, participating in Christmas concerts, learning about lockers and lock combinations, going on field trips, explaining report card marks, meeting assignment deadlines, studying for exams, trusting your teachers, making lifelong friends, and making your parents and family proud, you are about to go on stage and graduate. You are entering a new stage of your life, where you are in charge. It will not be easy but we feel confident that you have the skills to be successful and the abilities to choose a career and lifestyle that will suit your needs. We congratulate you for your school successes and wish you the best of luck in the future. Remember that your family, friends, and past teachers, will always be there to help you through “life’s bumps”. Enjoy Grad and the summer but please be safe! Les Kearns, Chairperson of the Board of Education School District #54 (Bulkley Valley)
