West Coast Trail Guardians celebrated FIRST NATIONS: | Parks Canada, three coastal first nations honour 20-year partnership of enriching the West Coast Trail experience for global travellers.

Guardians keep the trail clear, offer first aid and information to travellers, but most

importantly share their culture and history of the land.

“The agreement is more than what is says on paper,” says Huu-ay-aht Chief Derek Peters, whose late father Spencer was the signatory on the original agreement.

“What this agreement does is

acknowledges the territory and the nations that live in the territories. That’s a really respectful thing.

It allows us to educate the world about who we are and we get to meet the world.”

Karen Haugen worked with Parks Canada for 12 years before joining the Huu-ay-aht earlier this

The guardians do much more than keep the trail safe, says Haugen: they enrich travellers’ experiences.

“They arrive to make a 75-kilometre adventurous hike but they leave with pieces of Canadian history by hearing about the land from the traditional guardians.

“It’s not the bridge system or the beauty they remember, it’s that personal connection that makes it the most memorable visit to our country.”

Kevin Peters can’t stop grinning when he talks about the last 15 years he has spent as a First Nations Guardian of the West Coast Trail. ‘“It’s fun. You meet a lot of cool people, the work is very interesting,” said Peters, a member of the Huu-ay-aht First Nation who oversees the 25 kilometres of Huu-ay-aht territory on the trail.

Peters and dozens of other guardians, both past and present, were celebrated at a ceremony Friday at the Alberni Athletic Hall.

Friday’s ceremony was poignant for former guardian Edward Johnson of the Huu-ay-aht First Nation.

“The trail was a huge part of my life,” said Johnson, who was a guardian from 1998 to 2009. He works in Port Alberni now, and lives in Nanaimo.

He told a story about conversing with his cousins, who were driving to Lake Cowichan, where they were taking the sixweek-long guardian training course. He was waiting on the side of the road for the crummy to arrive to take him to his forestry job, cork boots in hand.

“This conversation was happening at 5:30 in the morning...I had a choice to make,” he recalled.

“I took the jump.”

Bernadette and Keith Wyton of Port Alberni are holding a slideshow and fundraiser to help rebuild a school in Nepal that was destroyed in the earthquake that hit the country in April, killing 8,800.

The Wytons visited the Himalayan country in February and March, spending three weeks in Kathmandu. They will show slides from their experiences this Tuesday, June 23 at 7 p.m. at Abbeyfield House, 3839 Eighth Ave. While in Nepal the Wytons visited a school hostel in Lubrak, in the Mustang region. The school houses about 100 students who come from remote villages around the region; it is unique in that there is a hostel attached to it, providing housing for the students.

“People in Nepal take education really, really seriously,” Wyton said.

A brand new spot to curl up with a book and a cup of joe is about to open in Uptown Port Alberni.

Located next door to Steampunk Cafe, Artemis Books has opened its doors after months of preparations.

“It’s obvious—a bookstore and a coffee shop are symbiotic,” said Steampunk Cafe owner Kevin Wright.

Artemis Books will be operated by Paul Groeveneld but owned

by Wright, who’s been right in the middle of preparations, from spray painting the ceiling panels in a steampunk style to deciding on the layout.

“I’m trying to bring some more culture to the Uptown area and

this is what the book shop is all about,” says Wright.

To Wright, whose Sprout business concept lays out how the often large, empty retail spaces in Uptown can be utilized, this is an opportunity to show what can be done.

“I believe that this is what an entrepreneurial spirit is all about— taking the risks, seeing the potential and actually moving forward.”

For Groeneveld, his reasoning for operating the bookstore was simple.

“I like books,” he said. “I had a positive experience working in a bookstore previously and it was time to do my own.”

Groeneveld, who grew up in Port Alberni, has always had a passion for

reading and education.

“I like promoting education and knowledge and books are one of the best ways to do that,” he said. “I think everyone should read.”

While he’ll be exploring the possibility of e-books in the future, Groeneveld himself likes to keep it old school.

“There’s something to be said for taking a book and flipping a page... I just like books.”

And Artemis Books will have a lot of them.

From kids books, mass market fiction to recipe books, Groeveneld plans to keep an eclectic selection.

“It will be a bit of everything. We’ll have books of interest to local people, for example local history stuff, books for hikers,” he said.

“We’re not going to

specialize in any one thing, Port Alberni is too small for a specialized bookstore.”

But Port Alberni isn’t the bookstore’s only target.

“It’s not just Port Alberni we’ll be marketing to, it’s also the West Coast. So anything that has to filter through Port Alberni and go to Nanaimo, we want them to preferably stop here instead.”

Getting people their books as quickly and easily as possible is the reasoning behind another service Artemis Books will offer: online ordering that will remove the hassle for customers.

Biomass company talks port business A new value-added wood biomass business is moving in to Port Alberni.

CanTimber Biotech will hold a public information session about its establishment within the Port Alberni Port Authority terminal facilities on Tuesday, June 23 from 57 p.m. in the upper lounge of the AV Multiplex, 3737 Roger St. With the introduction made by the City of Port Alberni economic development department, the port authority has negotiated a longterm agreement for CanTimber to create and operate a new

‘CanTimber was looking at a number of different communities... to set up shop.’

– Pat Deakin environmentallysustainable, valueadded wood-product business that will create upwards of two dozen direct full time jobs in Port Alberni, according to a port authority press release.

The public is invited to learn more about CanTimber and its

operations at the information session on June 23.

CanTimber will explain how their business will capitalize on the current wood waste left behind from logging operations (much of which is openly burned) by transforming it into a variety of valueadded products in an environmentally positive process.

“CanTimber was first introduced to us last summer by Pat Deakin through the positive partnership of community economic development the Port enjoys with the city,” Dave McCormick said.

Songs of summer in the key of sweet LORI WELBOURNE

Y

ears ago I shared my regrets of not learning a musical instrument and encouraged my kids to take lessons.

They were both keen on the idea and I recommended the guitar because of its portable versatility.

One of my friends who was with us at the time said I should put them in piano because it would give them a broader knowledge of music, helping them learn other instruments.

“Maybe,” I said, having no idea if that were true. “But you can’t play a piano in the park.” Little did I know that five of them would be showing up in Kelowna parks one day.

The first evidence I saw of this was in a recent video posted on Facebook in which my talented friend James Elser was playing one of the custom painted uprights in front of City Park and singing Paul Simon’s “Love Me Like a Rock” as people gathered around.

Halfway through the five-minute video a bystander spontaneously sits down beside him and starts playing one handed, eventually singing as well. That young stranger turns out to be Eric Disero, a gifted musician from Wild Son, a popular Kelowna band.

The man filming them was Andrew Barton, the videographer friend of James who had just told him about the Pianos in Parks program. Since James was eager to play one, and Andrew had new film equipment he wanted to try, they decided to film a performance on the spur of the moment.

As soon as the

video was posted to Facebook it started getting shared and within five days it had been viewed more than 29,000 times.

Since then James has played the other four pianos that are located across from city hall, behind the courthouse, near “The Spirit of Sail” fountain and by the Rotary Centre of the Arts.

“There is something deeply rewarding and ethereal that feeds the soul when you play for the community,” James said. “Like at seniors homes or for preschool children. I love playing for kids because they just dance, and sing and are in the moment.

Like the song I did with Eric – I just enjoyed being in the moment.”

Of course James isn’t opposed to getting paid for his music and providing for his family either.

He didn’t start off with those feelings though. At the age of 13 his mother put him in piano lessons and forced him to learn.

He hated it for about a year until his eighth grade art teacher played the movie “Ragtime” and showed him how much fun it could be.

“Brian encouraged me to learn songs I liked,” he said. “The theme to Hill Street Blues was my first ‘real’ song.”

As an adult he took a lengthy hiatus from music until he met some members of a band called the Rusty Nails. Andrew Barton was one of the original members.

“They’re from all walks of life, they’re not professional musicians,” James said. “ It’s an amazing group of people that love to play music, laugh and be together.

If it wasn’t for their encouragement and love, I wouldn’t be playing today. I am forever in their debt for showing me how

to have fun and enjoy music again. And that’s what I want to do for others—share the fun of music.”

The pianos placed around Kelowna inviting anyone and everyone to play for free inspires that

sentiment as well.

“There’s so much talent in the valley,” James said. “And Kelowna has such a diverse offering of venues for musicians to express their art.”

“I applaud all the people that got behind this and made it happen,” he said.

“They along with the people at KeyStone Music, Disney Interactive, City of Kelowna and Festivals Kelowna have done a great thing for our city.”

And while this refreshing concept may be new to us, public piano programs such as this exist in many cities around the world—and the free spirited trend is growing.

“The music community is getting stronger,” James said. “ And people can help reinforce it by listening and giving support. Some musicians just want

to be listened to and others need to get paid because it’s their livelihood. Either way they need an audience and the opportunities to play.”

James will be doing just that when he performs again this year at Westside Daze on Sunday, June 28 at 7 p.m. behind the Johnson Bentley Pool in West Kelowna where so many talented musicians and performers will be taking the stage.

My kids will not be among them since their interests shifted completely away from music and landed squarely on sports.

But that doesn’t mean they won’t play chopsticks on one of those funky pianos as soon as they see one.

And they, like me, will enjoy the musical abilities of those wanting to share.

Twice the company has been a nalist for a prestigious Commercial Building Award. Last year, it was nominated for the rst building in the multi-phased Sproat Lake Landing project.

Our community is named after Pedro the Alberni, a captain of the company of volunteers of Catalonia. In 1790 this captain lived on Vancouver Island. Already in those years terracotta ware was made to be used in Catalonian households. Today it is sold in Port Alberni and nowhere else in Canada.

You might have noticed a colourful new building on Gertrude Street, which is in fact an older home, now under renovations to provide Pot Luck Ceramics with a new location here in town. It was time to make the business more accessible to all people in the Alberni Valley and to extend the opening hours.

By the end of the month Pot Luck Ceramics will close the door of the barn in Cherry Creek and the business will move permanently into the Pot Luck Cottage on 4473 Gertrude Street.
