You may need to get tenants’ insurance for your belongings, and of course it’s always a good idea to budget for unexpected expenses.

Now that your budget is set, you need to choose the type of housing you want. Do you want a small apartment, a room in a students’ residence or a shared lease with some friends? Each option has its advantages and disadvantages. Renting with roommates saves money, but you’ll want to find reliable people you can negotiate with about sharing the chores and having quiet times for studying. Student residences come furnished and don’t require a 12-month lease, but they can be noisy and very small. Your own apartment, on the other hand, is ideal for studying, but it’s definitely more costly.

Think about the distance between where you’ll be living and school or work. Is there a grocery store nearby? Parking? A bus stop? Moving out of your parents’ home requires a good deal of thought and planning. Don’t rush into anything if you want to start off on the right foot.

Graduation ceremonies and other events that mark the end of a school year are rife with tradition. Students know it is important to receive their diplomas but may not have a full understanding of why that piece of paper can help open so many doors.

Diplomas date back to some of the earliest schools, but were also conferred upon land owners in ancient times by kings and other authority figures. Some military personnel were also given diplomas to signal land grants that were not subject to taxes. Nowadays diplomas take on a different meaning and vary depending on where one lives in the world.

Graduates who complete a specific course of study are issued diplomas. Diplomas were once written on Italian sheepskin. Although “diploma” translates to “folded papers,” paper was not always an economically viable medium for diplomas. In fact, animal skins were used as recently as the 1950s.

Receiving a degree or diploma can be a point of pride in families where older members may not have had the same educational opportunities as younger members.

Many people move to North America for the educational opportunities, and a diploma can symbolize taking advantage of those opportunities.

According to the or-

ganization Do Something, roughly 20 percent of first-time college students come from parents who have a high school diploma or less. Around 80 percent of students who enter high school now earn a regular or advanced diploma.

Dropout rates are on the decline, and a growing number of high school students continue on to two- or four-year degrees.

Canada is second only to the United States in the high school completion rate of its working-age population. Statistics Canada says that enrollment in Canadian universities continues to increase. Enrollments are now approximately 5 percent larger than they were just a few years ago.

Community colleges are benefitting from this influx of students.

Various statistics from the 2010-2011 year point to more than eight million Canadian students enrolled in community colleges at that time. Community colleges enable students to take core curriculum credits at a less expensive institution and then move on to a four-year school later on to expand on their coursework. This presents a viable option to students who are looking to keep education costs manageable.

or more years with diplomas and degrees is that they realize how competitive the job market can be. Graduates have a distinct advantage over other candidates.

Some companies will not even consider a job candidate who does not possess some college education. Other employers pay more depending on the level of education the job candidates completed.

Some students, how-

ever, will insist that failure to have a diploma isn’t a barrier to success. For example, Richard Branson, the billionaire entrepreneur who owns Virgin Group, did not graduate high school.

But such people are an aberration. Typically, earning a high school diploma and a bachelor’s degree is a key ingredient to landing a good job and enjoying professional success.

1. USE SUNSCREEN Protect your skin by using a waterproof sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, especially between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Apply the sunscreen 30 minutes before exposing your skin to the sun, and reapply every 2 to 3 hours or immediately after swimming. Don’t forget to wear a hat and sunglasses.

2. BE VIGILANT AROUND POOLS Most cases of drowning could have been avoided. Fence your pool in properly, install latches and spring-loaded hinges on any gates, and ensure that any object that could give access to the pool (such as a ladder or pump) is not located on the outside of the fence. Always keep an eye on children and never swim alone —adults can drown as well. Familiarize yourself with resuscitation techniques, including CPR. 3. WEAR A BIKE HELMET According to studies, the risk of brain injury from a road accident can be reduced by 85 percent simply by wearing a well-adjusted bike helmet that meets safety standards. A welladjusted helmet should cover your head; the front should be at a distance of approximately two finger widths from your eyebrows; the straps should form a V under your ears; and you should be able to slide a finger between the strap and the chin.

4. DRIVE CAREFULLY Speeding, alcohol, and fatigue are the main causes of road accidents. Be sure to adopt safe driving habits when you’re behind the wheel, for your own safety as well as that of your passengers and other road users. Pay particular attention to the many pedestrians and cyclists on the roads during the summer months. If you don’t feel able to drive, don’t.

5. STAY HYDRATED It is vital to drink lots of fluids during hot weather. Symptoms of dehydration vary, but can include dry mouth, dark, strong-smelling urine, dizziness, difficulty concentrating, or headache. Be sure to drink a lot, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Always keep a bottle of water handy, especially if you are exercising or if it’s very hot. Avoid soft drinks.

6. AVOID HEAT STROKE Heat stroke is dangerous for your health. Those most at risk are children, seniors, and people working in the hot sun. The main symptom of heat stroke is dry skin that is hot and red (because the body is dehydrated, it stops producing sweat). When it is very hot, stay in a cool place or in the shade, drink lots of water, and wear loose, lightweight clothing.

7. BE PRUDENT ON BOATS Always wear a personal flotation device (PFD) on a watercraft — the majority of boat-related drowning victims were not wearing a PFD. As when driving on the road, avoid mixing speed, alcohol, and fatigue. Also, be sure to have the necessary operating permit for the type of watercraft you are using.

8. PROTECT YOURSELF FROM INSECTS Mosquitoes, bees, wasps, flies, and ticks — insects are inevitable during the summer months.

Even though their stings are not dangerous (unless you are allergic or the insect is carrying a disease or a virus), the after-effects of a bite are always unpleasant. Protect yourself by wearing light-coloured clothing with long sleeves and legs, by avoiding perfumes, and by applying an insect repellant containing DEET (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide).

Youth and Impaired Driving Road crashes continue to be leading cause of death among teenagers.

The statistics for motor vehicle crashes and impairment-related crashes among young drivers are alarming.

• Young people have the highest rates of traffic death and injury per capita among all age groups and the highest death rate per kilometer driven among all drivers under 75 years of age. More 19-year-olds die or are seriously injured than any other age group.

• Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among 16 to 25 year olds, and alcohol and/or drugs are a factor in 55% of those crashes.

• 16-25 year olds constituted 13.6% of the population in 2010, but made up almost 33.4% of the impairment-related traffic deaths.

Studies conclude that young drivers are over-represented in road crashes for two primary reasons: inexperience and immaturity. Although young people are the least likely to drive impaired, the ones who do are at very high risk of collision.

When you were a kid, you probably dreamed of being a teacher, musician, firefighter or astronaut, at least for a while. And now?

You’ll soon be graduating from high school, so answering the career question is paramount.

One thing is certain: you want to continue your education.

However, this important decision entails asking yourself loads of questions that aren’t always easy to answer.

Community college, university, choosing a trade or attending a specialized school: there’s a whole host of possibilities for those who wish to pursue post-secondary studies. While some people are excited about the prospect of studying at university for a few years, others prefer to get ready for the work force right away with a training program

that teaches a trade or technical skills.

You’re still unsure about what you want to do? Sometimes it’s really difficult to know which path to choose, which in turn means you don’t know which kind of program you should apply for. If you need help, you could talk to a counsellor to find out which type of training or study program best suits your personality and your interests.

Talk to the school to find out if you have all the prerequisite courses before you apply. You’ll also have to research your funding options. Are you eligible for a scholarship? Are your parents planning to support you wholly or partially? Will you have to get a part-time job and work during your studies? And don’t forget: it’s important to

have a plan B in case you’re not accepted

into your program of choice.

How to help kids prepare for college life they arrive on campus is that their life is suddenly much less structured and their amount of downtime has increased considerably.

Unlike high school, which keeps many kids in class or involved in extracurricular activities from the early morning through the late afternoon, college affords students much more free time, which is theirs to use as they see fit. Some kids dive right into on-campus activities, while others struggle to use their free time to their advantage.

Parents can teach time management skills such as how to establish a schedule so all of that free time does not go to waste. This schedule can be adjusted on a weekly basis depending on coursework or extracurricular activities. Once kids learn to manage their time effectively, including using breaks between classes to review notes from a recent lecture or upcoming class, they’re likely to get the most out of themselves academically and find they have more time to pursue extracurricular activities as well.

Many of this year’s high school graduates will be leaving home for a college campus in the fall. Such a departure is often bittersweet for kids and parents alike. Young men and women typically look forward to the freedom and independence that college life can provide, but those same men and women know they will miss the familiarity of home as well. Parents, too, have mixed emotions when kids head to college, as their sadness over a child leaving home is met with the pride they feel that the child they raised is setting out to make their own way in the world.

Few moments in life involve such significant change as the moment when a young man or woman first arrives on a college campus.

Part of the trepidation many kids have when leaving for college concerns how they may or may not develop a relationship with their new roommate. Many schools assign roommates months in advance of the school year, giving kids ample time to make contact and make arrangements about whom is going to bring certain items, such as a television or coffee pot or even furniture if the room can fit any. Parents should encourage such contact so kids can get a feel of who they will be living with and lay the groundwork for a friendship before they even step foot on campus. The feeling of knowing someone on campus can greatly reduce the anxiety many kids feel when they arrive at school for their freshmen orientation.

Don’t let alcohol and drugs cloud your child’s future There’s nothing more touching than seeing your teenagers on the most exciting day of their lives, walking across the stage to receive their high school diploma or heading out for their formal. They radiate such self-confidence, and their futures are bright with promise. Don’t let drugs and alcohol lead them away from that, toward tragedy.

It’s normal for kids to want to celebrate these rites of passage to the maximum, but the role of parents is to ensure that nothing goes wrong. Parents have to do what they can to ensure that their kids’ lives are not ruined by

a car accident caused by a young driver under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

What to do to prevent a tragedy? Discuss the dangers with your teenagers whenever possible, especially as their big day approaches.

Emphasize the fact that drug or alcohol consumption could spoil this memorable evening and that the consequences could even be fatal. Ensure that event organizers have planned security measures to prevent any substance abuse.

Offer to be your teenager’s designated driver throughout the evening, even if that means staying up

until after dawn. It’s becoming more common for parents to get together and offer a safe driving service to youngsters after the formal. If you promise not to complain, no matter where you have to go, no matter what time it is, your teenager might very well accept this winwin deal.

Other options might be to hire a limousine service for them or rent them a hotel room within walking distance of the formal’s location. After all, the most important thing is to make sure that everybody gets home safe and sound, diploma in hand!
