Tianna’s tangles

n Street performer Miranda Allen, known by her stage name Tianna the Traveller, escapes from a series of ropes and chains at the Shuswap Farm and Craft Market on Friday, June 12. Allen grew up in Revelstoke and is touring the B.C. Interior before heading to the world’s largest fringe festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. Allen will return to the farmer’s market to perform her 45-minute show on Tuesday, June 23.

Residents will soon get a chance to see what the design for the upgrading of the Trans-Canada Highway at the west end of Salmon Arm looks like.

B.C. Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone addressed the Salmon Arm Chamber of Commerce Tuesday morning. There he announced that a public information meeting is set for Wednesday, June 24 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Prestige Harbourfront Resort.

“I encourage you to participate if you still have thoughts and concerns,” he told his audience.

He said the ministry’s intention is to four-lane from where four-laning ends west of Salmon Arm, over a new Salmon River Bridge and through Salmon Arm. He said it’s a $120 million project.

Whether it’s done in one, two, three or four phases will depend on how much the federal government will cost share, he said, noting the two levels of government are currently in discussions.

Following his presentation, Salmon Arm Mayor Nancy Cooper asked if there is anything city council can do to help bring in the federal government.

Stone said he wanted to emphasize the federal government is in discussions with the province.

“I don’t want the message to come out of this room I was pointing the finger at the federal government,” he said. “We’re all in this together.

Stone said the provincial ministry is working on all the design work, which isn’t done by the federal government.

“The western approaches, we’re getting very close... We’re doing a tremendous amount of work to make sure these projects are shovel ready.”

He said it would be helpful if city council continues to reinforce with the MP and other federal government reps how important the project is.

Rodger DeMille said he is the title holder on the DeMille’s property and asked why no one from the ministry has consulted him properly.

DeMille said he is particularly concerned about land being taken out of the Agricultural Land Reserve.

Stone said he will make sure staff reach out to him.

“Absolutely you have my commitment on that.”

Several other people at Stone’s presentation asked questions.

Warren Bell said the federal government has set aside funds for flood-plain mapping and noted Salmon Arm’s data is very old.

He asked how high a priority if would be for the reconstruction through Salmon Arm to include a flood-plain analysis, noting a number of citizens think it

“I would tend to come from the same place you’re at,” he said, adding he is pleased the federal government is undertaking the work and he thinks there’s a role for the provincial and local governments.

He said the province is trying to find a balance between modernizing and practical limits on funding.

“Your suggestion regarding the Salmon River Bridge is a good one.”

One woman asked about trucks speeding down the hill into town from the east, possibly carrying dangerous goods.

Stone said the province doesn’t have the resources to put high level enforcement at every stretch of highway in B.C., but does try to target the highest priorities.

“But your feedback is valued. I will ask CVSE (Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement) to take a look at the approaches here.”

Other questions included the topics of line painting, pot holes, cycling corridors and driverless transport trucks.

Stone said a federal government regulation introduced a few years ago means the paint used now doesn’t last.

He said the province and other jurisdictions are trying to find a solution.

Regarding pot holes, he said he thinks ministry staff were going to address them in spring and early summer.

“I’ll definitely take that back,” he said.

He said the province is going to invest in cycling networks, starting with one in the Okanagan “in a matter of weeks.”

He said funds will be spent on sweeping road shoulders and a cycling tourism signage program.

Chamber president Jim Kimmerly asked about driverless trucks being tested in Nevada.

Stone said four states are seriously evaluating them but “you will not see driverless vehicles in British Columbia in the next five years.”

Time to use new ways

Economy: Chief stresses importance of sustainability.

A new way of doing things.

This was a theme of sorts for the latest Moving Forward Together Workshop held at the Quaaout Lodge on June 10.

Keynote speaker Chief Robin Billy of the Adams Lake Indian Band spoke on integrating Secwepemc knowledge and traditional wisdom with today’s community planning.

“We really have to change the way we do things,” he said, after speaking of the Mt. Polley Mine disaster, the recent fuel spill off Vancouver, deforestation, water pollution of area lakes, the push for more oil and gas pipelines and climate change.

“In a real sense we hold our laws within ourselves,” he said, noting the stories that have guided the Secwepemc people for thousands of years emphasize environmental responsibility.

“It’s our choice to dump bilge water in the lake. It’s our choice if you’re going to build a cabin to build a composting toilet...”

Billy talked about his own background.

“I grew up on the land as a young child, picking berries. I was taught to hunt, gathering roots... knowing the importance of traditional foods for health.”

“Growing up in that kind of lifestyle leads you to protect the earth,” he said.

After high school in Chase he went to the University of Manitoba where one of the programs he enrolled in was begun by former

National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations, Phil Fontaine.

Elders across Canada participated, sharing knowledge of land, principles, values and practices around land management.

Returning with a science degree, Billy worked with the Kamloops Indian Band as environmental coordinator, where he developed a new environmental assessment process.

He talked of the history of the Secwepemc territory, and the effects of settlers and government policy, including the breaking of historical agreements over land and the Indian Act. He hates the term ‘lazy Indian.’

“I’ve always worked hard and we were legislated out of the economy.”

He spoke of the evolution of case law in B.C., pointing out that a lot of First Nations are fighting for land title and rights.

“A lot of people will have to start accepting the facts, we’ve never signed a treaty or gave up land. We have a role to protect our territory.”

He said an economy based on sustainability could mean many things, from eco-tourism to sustainable forestry. He referred to the Site C dam planned for the Peace River, a “big sexy project,” noting B.C. is falling behind the whole nation in terms of wind development, for instance.

“Flood off a lot of agricultural land, flood off sacred sites – there might be a better way...”

Amy Greenwood with the Fraser Basin Council helped convene the youth engagement part of the workshop.

“We were really impressed by the level of participation,” she said, noting about 18 young people and young adults from ages 16 to 24 took part, including two youth facilitators, Natalya Melnychuk from Sorrento and Brock Endean from Chase.

One of the key items identified, Greenwood said, was the need to establish a formalized “youth council” or

youth advisory group to help identify more effective ways to engage youth in important community discussions and decision-making processes.

She said the main themes for youth were: • developing alternative transportation rather than private cars so more youth can connect with each other; • creating open spaces and meeting places where youth can come together; and, particularly from First Nations youth, • making it possible to learn more about traditional practices from more elders.

Of all the 94 recommendations contained in the federal Truth and Reconciliation commission’s report outlining the history and effects of residential schools on aboriginal people in Canada, the most important relate to education.

In its call for improved education for aboriginal peoples the commission is not alone. Studies over the years have pointed to the gap between educational opportunities for aboriginals compared to others.

While much has been done (in B.C. the gap is closing between the percentage of aboriginal youth graduating from high school compared to other students), the overall result remains that a considerable number of Canadians are improperly prepared for the complex nature of modern society.

Education is the great leveller of any society. From a common base of reading, writing, math, geography, knowledge of a country’s history and its peoples comes the opportunity for individual achievement and ultimately, success.

Former Assembly of First Nations leader Shawn Atleo said as much in 2012: “When our young people do complete high school, they’re twice as likely to get a job. When they graduate from university, their earnings triple.”

How to change the way things are now will continue to be the subject of debate and study. But to waste the potential of hundreds of thousands of Canadians cannot continue.

Fishing adventurer a worthy catch We got our first television set back in the early sixties. My two favourite shows were Have Gun Will Travel, a weekly western adventure series starring Richard Boone as Paladin, the knight without armour in a savage land, and Ted Peck’s Tides and Trails, a show about hunting, fishing and the great outdoors. He used to end his show by saying, “tight lines and straight shooting.” I couldn’t wait for either of those shows to come on.

Of course, there was also the Ed Sullivan Show, which came on Sunday evenings.

I particularly remember being glued to the television set on the night of February 9, 1964 – along with an estimated 70 million other people – waiting for the Beatles to make their first appearance. My life changed forever that evening.

Over the years there have been a few pretty good westerns on TV, but none ever stood up to the knight without armour in a savage land. I’m not sure if any of the shows from back then would stand up to today’s

The GreaT OuTdOOrs James Murray standards, especially when it comes to the sets and scripts. They were pretty simple and cardboardy back then. There have also been a lot of fishing and outdoor shows on television over the years. Almost all of the them have been produced in the U.S. and fall into the what I would call the “good ol’ boy” category.

Most of them are hosted by guys with names like Lefty Crawdad or Marlin Jones.

It’s an endless parade of guys catching one bass after another – guys who insist on kissing fish on the mouth and laughing like – well, they sort of remind me of the movie Deliverance. There is even a cable

channel now solely devoted to fishing shows. If they aren’t hosted by guys with outfits that make them look like racing car drivers, they are hosted by women who are constantly squealing throughout the entire show.

Yes, I admit I’ve watched them – once.

Having said all this, there are a couple of fishing shows I don’t mind. They’re on the Cottage Network. They are both hosted by the same person, a fellow from Quebec by the name of Cyril Chauquet. One is called The Fishing Adventurer and the other is Wild Catch. It’s sort of hard to tell but, to me, it appears to be the same show with two different names.

Be that as it may, it/they are pretty good shows. He travels all over the world fishing for all sorts of exotic fish.

(Some of the best shows were filmed right here in Canada.) What I particularly enjoy is all the background and travel information that he adds to the show.

Instead of going out with big fancy charters, he usually goes out with locals in their pangas. Half the time

it seems their outboard motors die or he loses ‘the big one’ just before he gets it to the boat. Either way, he’s a pretty likeable sort of guy and it/they are pretty downto-earth fishing shows.

I don’t mind watching the occasional fishing show, although I must say I’d rather be out fishing in real life.

When it comes right down to it, we’ve got some of the best fishing on the planet right here in the Interior. A lot of those guys who have fishing shows want to come here to fish for rainbow trout in our lakes, and salmon and steelhead in our world-class rivers.

Maybe one of these days, Cyril Chauquet will phone up and say he wants to go out fishing with me in my 12-foot aluminum car topper or, better yet, maybe he’ll say he wants me go come along with him when he is going to fish for rooster fish in Le Pas, Mexico, or tuna off the coast of Nova Scotia or the Azores. I’ll make sure my cell phone charged and somewhere in with my tackle box just in case.

From the hill Colin Mayes I am providing constituents with the following paragraphs of a letter sent to the Mayor of Vancouver from our federal Minister of Health: “Marijuana is not an approved drug or medicine, and Health Canada does not endorse its use. There is serious health risks associated with smoking marijuana, especially for youth. That is why the Government of Canada wants to stop youth from smoking marijuana. The evidence is clear that when youth smoke marijuana they have increased risks of developing mental health issues, including psychosis and schizophrenia. We also know that regular, long-term marijuana use in youth can harm concentra-

tion, memory, and the ability to think and to make decisions, and it can also produce paranoia and anxiety or nervousness.”

“Legitimizing and normalizing the use and sale of marijuana can have only one effect: increasing marijuana use and addiction. Indeed, according to the Canadian Drug Use Monitoring Survey, although youth marijuana use has dropped by almost 45 per cent since 2004, 20 percent of youth smoked marijuana in 2012 compared to 70 per cent who drank alcohol. Legitimizing and normalizing marijuana could mean more than tripling its use by youth.”

Band benefits from services The Columbia Shuswap Regional District board agreed to extend the agreement for services to the Little Shuswap Indian Band.

Services will include recycling and refuse disposal, milfoil and weed control, emergency preparedness, eco-

nomic development, tourism, film commission, 911 emergency dispatch and the North Okanagan Columbia Shuswap Regional Hospital District on both taxable and nontaxable lands.

Anxious journey to birth Baby needs surgery: Mother must stay in Vancouver.

Salmon Arm’s Brianna McLellan and little unborn Ollie have already made Ronald McDonald House in Vancouver their home, although it wasn’t expected to be necessary quite so soon.

Ollie, the son of Brianna and Chad McLellan, is due to be born on July 21. He suffers from a hernia – a congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

It is diagnosed in just one in 2,500 babies per year. Ollie’s diaphragm hasn’t fully formed, so his abdominal organs have pushed up into his chest cavity. His little heart has been pushed to one side and there’s little space left for his lungs to grow.

However, that hasn’t stopped Ollie from growing.

Brianna’s sister Deidra Staley reports that Ollie, who is currently breech, measured 44 weeks at Brianna’s 33-week appointment.

“He’s already such a little trouble maker,” Staley joked.

As well, Brianna has developed polyhydramnios or excess amniotic fluid, which is a trigger for pre-term delivery, she explained. Consequently the doctors at BC Women’s Hospital wanted her in Vancouver right away.

“She give us updates regularly, and is mostly in love with the cleanliness and comfort of the RMH. My mom and Brianna’s daughter are there with Brianna, as she isn’t allowed to be alone. Chad and the boys took a trip down there this past weekend and they all had a great visit.”

Ollie is the baby brother of Bryson, Carter and Peyton who are 11, 9 and 5.

Staley adds: “She is definitely feeling ‘over pregnant’ and everyone is very excited to meet Ollie. His presence is known... He isn’t making a very quiet entrance into this world.”

(NC) The World Health Organization (WHO) has released its first report dedicated exclusively to drowning, titled Global Report on Drowning: Preventing a Leading Killer.

Among the findings: drowning is one of the 10 leading causes of death for children and young people in every region of the world. In Canada, it’s the second leading cause of preventable death for children under the age of 10.

Globally, an estimated 372,000 people drown each year in what the WHO describes as a serious but neglected public health threat.

While the impact from drowning is significant compared to other public health challenges, there are no broad, organized global strategies for prevention.

• Keep them shaded – As many beaches lack natural shade, make sure you bring yours with you. This means hats and sunglasses for the entire family and a nice big beach umbrella to rest under when the sun gets too hot.

• Keep them protected – An absolute must for a day in the sun is sunscreen.

For the best protection, put sunscreen on before heading out into the sun, and reapply it at least every two hours. If you are swimming, towel-drying and sweating, you will need to apply sunscreen more often. Salmon Arm Minor Hockey Association has been awarded the Bantam Tier 2 2015-2016 provincial championships which will be held in Salmon Arm starting March 13, 2016.

Nutrition tips to help shift workers LiviNg WELL

Working shifts can upset your body’s “internal clock” and overall health. When you work shifts, you may find it hard to know when and what to eat so here are 10 nutrition tips for shift workers.

• Eat your main meal early if on a later shift. If possible, eat your main meal before you go to work and have a small meal and healthy snacks during your shift. Eating large meals at night can cause heartburn, gas, or constipation. It can also make you feel sleepy and sluggish.

• Preparation is key.

Eat more protein and lower glycemic carbohydrates.

Not surprisingly, night shift workers often struggle with feelings of drowsiness. Protein foods like tuna, eggs, lean chicken, roast beef, baked beans, split pea soups, soy nuts, low fat cheese strings, cottage cheese, and peanut butter increase alertness.

High glycemic carbohydrate foods like bread, potatoes, and cereal have a sedating effect.

• Avoid fatty, fried or spicy foods. Foods such as hamburgers, fried chicken and spicy chili may lead to heartburn and indigestion.

• Avoid high glycemic carbohydrates such as cookies, candies, snack foods, sugary sweets and sweetened beverages. Too much sugar isn’t good for anybody and it may be even more damaging for night shift workers. These foods spike blood sugars then cause a crash which

Fire danger rating rises

Fire crews are still mopping up a wildfire believed to have been person caused near Gof Course Road in Anglemont.

The fire was reported late in the afternoon on June 10. Two rappel crews and two response officers or supervisory personnel responded.

Melissa Klassen, fire information officer, says the fire grew to half a hectare in size, and was burning in standing timber and showing rank two and three behaviour.

“With rank two, you see open flame on the ground surface and

becoming organized,” says Klassen. “Three starts climbing trees and candling.”

On the scene until late in the evening, three crews were back early the following morning, working in from established guards on the perimeter to cool things down.

On June 15, a rap attack crew returned to the fire scene, and Klassen said it’s no longer a concern.

While there have been no other fires of note in the Salmon Arm Zone, as of June 17, the wildfire danger rating was at high in Chase and Sicamous, and extreme in Salmon Arm, Enderby and in

Looking ahead, Klassen says some precipitation is expected over the next 10 days, which would help with the fire danger rating.

If that doesn’t happen, she suggested a campfire ban may go into effect before July.

“Right now, all across the fire centre, (the rating) is moderate to high, but it’s looking more overwhelmingly high and we’re having more pockets of extreme pop up, and

if we don’t receive any precipitation, we’re going to see that increase substantially in the next week,” said Klassen. “If that trend continues, if we don’t see any kid of cooling patterns over the next, there could be the potential for a possible campfire ban before July.”

Temperatures are expected to drop to 23 C on Saturday, but rise to 28 C on Sunday.

An open fire ban is currently in place in the Kamloops Fire Centre.

The Chase Fire Department was shined, polished and filled with excitement last weekend as the First Annual Lobster Fest got underway. The Chase FireFighter’s Association celebrated the event Saturday, June 13.

The association members spent weeks organizing the event, which saw 108 lobsters making their way from the ocean of Nova Scotia to the dining tables at the Chase Firehall.

With an almost soldout crowd, not a lobster was spared. Local firefighters, wearing their finest dress blues served the meals, while guests toured the department.

Participants were able to see a live auto extrication demonstration, see some of the tools in action, and even win prizes including tennis rackets, lobster and survival kits.

A silent auction provided guests a chance to take home even more goodie.

The Chase Firefighter’s Association appreciates the community’s support.

WEATHERHEAD, OLIVE Olive Weatherhead, an only child, was born to Edwin and Ellen Weatherhead on May 4, 1924 in Nelson, B.C. where they resided for 2 years and then moved to Calgary where her father passed away when Olive was a young girl. There was some very difficult times for Olive and her mother over the years. Olive never married.

Her mother lived with her until her passing. Olive lived in Edmonton, Alberta for a number of years where she worked for the Bank of Montreal and later International Harvestor. They later moved to Salmon Arm and later to Vancouver Island. Olive spent her later years in Campbell River, Courtney and Comox where she passed away on May 23rd, 2015 at Eagle View in St Joseph’s Hospital. Olive had cousins in Australia and England whom she never met but corresponded with over the years and had a close relationship with. Olive’s other family was her friends that she made over the years. She cherished these friendships and many times commented that God had always looked after her over the years and brought good people into her life. Olive always spoke her mind but she had a way about her that drew people to her. She loved music and entertainment night at the nursing home was a highlight for her. She could often be seen on the floor keeping time with her walker. Olive always liked to keep up on current events in the world. She could always tell you what places you needed to see while visiting out on the island.

She leaves to mourn her passing; cousins, Robert and Margaret Batchelor of Wokingham, England, Rhonda and Larry Batchelor of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, and Clarisse and Mathew Flynn of Berkshire, England. She will be missed and fondly remembered by her friends from Alberta and Vancouver Island.

A memorial service was held for Olive on June 3, 2015 in the Church of St John the Divine in Courtenay, BC. A graveside service will be held at Mount Ida Cemetery, Salmon Arm on Thursday, June 18th at 11:00 am, with Bishop James Cowan officiating.

F. G. “PAT” SHIRLEY January 23, 1924 to December 12, 2014 A Celebration of life service for Pat will be held from the chapel of Bowers Funeral Home on Sunday morning, June 28th, 2015 at 11 a.m. with Jack Bowers the Funeral Celebrant.

Pat was a true pioneer of the Salmon Arm area, following his father’s passion for helping the community with his countless years with the Salmon Arm Fire Department.

Pat was also presented with an honorary life member designation from the Volunteer Firefighters Association of British Columbia and a 40 year fire service exemplary service medal from the Federal Government of Canada.

He was also a long time member of the Vintage Car Club of Canada and an original member of the Shuswap Chapter.

Pat was a great historian of Salmon Arm with vast knowledge of places, people and the automobiles they drove. He maintained records of his own and assisted many others with clarification of days gone by.

Pat was pre-deceased by wife June in 1993 and is survived by son Jim (Lorna) of Salmon Arm, daughter Pam (Glen Van Horne) of Campbell River and son’s Brad (Jane) and Greg (Debbie) of Salmon Arm, 8 grandchildren, 6 great grand children and great companion Sharon Thorpe.

MILLS, NANCY ROBERTA

It is with indescribable sadness that I must inform Southern Vancouver Island that: NANCY ROBERTA MILLS (born 02 May 1952) died at Cowichan District Hospital on March 7th, 2015 of an unsuspected, untreated cancer which she was unable to overcome with the resources she had available.

She fought longer and harder than any of us knew or suspected and if we knew, we could have offered more and better support.

Nancy hated to bother anybody even when she needed help.

In school, Nancy was the shy, wimpy kid who the brats and bullies picked on, however it turns out she turned out better than all of them, because she grew up to be beautiful, intelligent, talented and KIND. It was my good fortune to share forty years of events, places and friends with her, especially music, musicians and other exceptionally talented artistic people.

Nancy’s father, Clayton Mills was an marquetry perfectionist, an electronic technician and an appreciative organist. Nancy’s uncle, Don Kerr, was the local postmaster and a well-known musician and choir director. Nancy, Clayton, and Don, all possessed fine keyboard instruments, and in their honor it is proposed to present a free memorial keyboard concert which will be announced in the future.

All will be welcome, especially people with a connection to the “older” music of their youth and loves.

I would sincerely like to thank the many people who have offered me their condolences and support.

LARRY EDWARD GREENING February 14, 1957 - June 4, 2015 It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of our brother Larry on June 4, 2015 at Royal Inland Hospital, Kamloops, BC. Larry had suffered a stroke at the beginning of March and for the last 3 months was determined to recover.

After complications and medical issues, he passed away with his family at his bedside.

Larry had a big heart but liked to present a gruff manner at times. His sense of humor and mischievous ways often showed through.

Larry was born in Edmonton on Feb. 14, 1957. As a family, we moved to Salmon Arm in 1963 and lived in South Canoe. As a young adult, Larry worked on oil rigs in Alberta, became an apprentice mechanic but chose to move to Slave Lake to work before he completed the apprenticeship. He moved back to B.C. and worked for Mac Tools before going into business in Salmon Arm with his friend, Cheryl, in the Hemp Store. Eventually he bought and became the sole owner of JJ’s Hemp Hollow. He was a hard worker and was in the store 6 days a week, he rarely took a day off. He enjoyed visiting with friends and customers daily at the store.

He took two very memorable trips; in the 1980’s he went on an extended motorcycle trip with his brother, James, all through the United States. More recently, he took his 5th wheel trailer and went to the Baja and Phoenix to see a NASCAR car race with his friend Olga.

Larry was loved and will be missed by his familySister Ida (Stuart) Woods, nephews Philip and Craig; Brother James, niece Kari and nephew Jeremy; one aunt, and many cousins and friends.

Thank you to Chelsea and Glenn for their support and help. Thank you to his relatives and friends who called, sent cards, and to those able to visit.

Larry loved his pet dogs over the years. Anyone wishing to make a donation in his name may do so to your local SPCA. The Celebration of Life will be arranged at a later date in the fall.

Shuswap Day Society is sad to announce that as of June 30, the Shuswap Young Parent Program located at 2600 20th Street NE will close.

The society has had to make the difficult decision to close the program due to ongoing low enrolment and the financial strain the program was experiencing each year.

The society would like to acknowledge School District #83 for their support over the past 14 years and for allowing us to use their property and house for the program.

“The society is very pleased that many young parents, who participated in the program, have graduated and developed positive parenting skills.

We’ve had many positive success stories and we are proud to have supported so many young parents,” says Karen Bubola, general manager.

The society will be selling toys, equipment and furnishings from the day care centre. A large garage sale will be held in July. (exact date to be determined) Please contact Shuswap Day Care @ 250-8326192 for more information.
