The Affolter brothers like to think of themselves as the Coen brothers and Warner brothers combined. The Slocan Park-raised sibling quartet, founders of YouTube channel Comedy Blender, believe there’s strength in numbers, and that’s why all four of them — Nathan, Jon, Heath and Thomas — left home to attend film school. “We’ve been doing this our whole lives since we were teenagers, messing around with Mom and Dad’s camcorder,” Nathan told the Advertiser, in the days before the Leo awards in Vancouver last weekend. The Affolters were nominated for

Best Web Series for their their stop-motion and hand-drawn animation Food Flix, going up against bigger budget live action productions. It was only the latest in a number of awards the siblings have picked up recently, including Best Animated Series at the Vancouver Web Fest and Best Toon at the San Fransisco Web Fest. In the Affolters’ YouTube videos, anthropomorphized fruits and vegetables gather in a theatre to watch satirical short films. The sets are made of recycled goods, and the shorts are a mixture of stop-motion and 2D animation. “Two of us trained in live action, and the other two in animation, so we usually have a mix of both,” said Nathan. In the third episode, “The God-

farmer,” sinister bananas riddle an apple-version of Sonny Corleone with machine gun bullets while he attempts to crawl to safety. “That was one of our biggest showpieces — it’s got the most shots, gags, crazy stuff,” said Nathan. He said they started Comedy Blender last year to support their pitches and build an online audience. “People in this industry want to know who’s interested in this. We’re working on building our audience, exploring different ideas and working within our budgetary and time restrictions. Right now we’re aiming to have something brand new on Comedy Blender once a month.” Food Flix ultimately did not take

home the Best Web Series award, losing to Mythos, but the brothers were thrilled regardless. “A lot of these people we were up against are people we know from working in BC film and TV. Just to be nominated was awesome,” said Nathan. “Our real passion and goal is to one day get a TV show or film picked up, and to play the creator role. Thursday, July 2 The Lure of the Local is the theme for a special reading by accomplished author and former Parliamentary Poet Laureate Fred Wah on Thursday, July 2, 7 p.m. at the Nelson Public Library. Wah won the Governor-General’s Award for Poetry and the Howard O’Hagan Award for short fiction for his literary memoir The Diamond Grill, about his Nelson childhood, among other awards. The free reading is a kick-off to Wah’s workshop with Elephant Mountain Literary Festival as writer-in-residence. Annual car show revving up for June 20 Sheri Regnier West Kootenay Advertiser

Adding to the eye candy of gleaming chrome and polished custom colours is the chance to bust a groove on the dance floor during the 7th annual Smoke n’ Steel car show. “Cruizn’ the Columbia” is slated for June 20 in Trail’s Gyro Park from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Following the open car show, courtesy of the West Kootenay Smoke and Steel Car Club, the group is hosting its first ever dance that includes live music with familiar faces, lots of door prizes, a midnight snack and a cash bar. Doors open at 8 p.m. in the Trail Memorial Centre gym, with music by the Kootenay All Stars featuring Gary Stewart beginning at 8:30 p.m. The notion to extend the day for the show’s 130-plus entrants was driven by a simple fact – with so many guests in town as well as local car devotees, the club decided it was time to give them something to do at night. “People drive for hours just to get here for a four-hour car show,” said Donny Steep, the club’s dance organizer. “There’s not much for them to do after that. So we thought we could add something to it, try a dance, and keep people in town.” Tickets are available now and until 3 p.m. the day of Cruizn’ the Columbia, said Steep, noting tickets will not be sold at the door because of insurance and liquor licencing restrictions. Another aspect the club considered, which is why supper is not being offered with the

One-hundredth in a series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names How did the Boundary get its name? It’s after Boundary Creek, but why isn’t the region named instead after the Kettle River, the much larger body of water to which the creek is tributary? It appears mineral claims staked along Boundary Creek made it a byword for the region. The earliest known mention of “Boundary Creek district” is in the Ainsworth Hot Springs News of Sept. 21, 1892: “[G]reat developments are promised in the Boundary creek district, where there are very rich deposits of copper and silver-lead …” The first use of “Boundary district” is in the Nelson Miner of Sept. 30, 1893: “The reports of the Kettle River gold strike have not yet been verified as yet, although there are many in the Boundary district who accept them as gospel.” The first known mention of “Boundary country” is in the Nelson Miner of Jan. 25, 1896: “The development of this property will be an excellent thing for that section of the Boundary country.” By 1897, the Boundary Creek district was defined in Mining in the Pacific Northwest as “the area between the mouth of Rock Creek on the west and the north fork of the Kettle River on the east, between the [US border] on the south and the source of Boundary Creek, 12 miles north.” How did Boundary Creek get its name? Greenwood’s Kim Kinakin posed this question recently, pointing out that many areas along the US-Canada border could be called Boundary Country and Boundary Creek doesn’t straddle the border, but starts well north of it, crosses into the US near Midway, and then flows into the Kettle River not far south. Kale, Cucumbers, Lettuce Ready Now! W.G. Cox drew this map of the Midway area in 1860, which Kim Kinakin enhanced to make some of the writing more legible. It shows American Town, a long forgotten byproduct of a dispute that also gave Boundary Creek its name. is in the Victoria British Colonist of Jan. 3, 1861 which also reveals an alternate name: “The usual route taken by the Dalles’ traders to reach American Creek, after ascending the Forks of the Okanagan is to take the Hope trail from that point to Tonasquet City or Rock Creek — a distance of about 25 miles. Thence, they descend the Colville or Dease’s river (as Anderson’s map calls it) to American Creek, which, by the way, is better known in that region as Boundary Creek.” The first mention of American Creek was just a few days earlier, in the Colonist of Dec. 28, 1860, while the last was in the New York Times in September 1861. How the creek was named was revealed in a letter from Robert Stevenson, a former

customs collector at Osoyoos, published in the Colonist on Nov. 19, 1891. He repeated the comments in the San Francisco Call in 1896, but near as we can tell, they’ve never been mentioned since. Stevenson wrote: “In September 1860, I was gold mining on Rock Creek when the American Engineers and the British Engineers, then locating the 49th parallel and putting up the monuments, met near Boundary Creek, the British Engineers coming from the west, I think, and the Americans from the east. Well, as I said, the parties themselves met, but their surveys did not by over 300 yards! continued on page A14

William G. Cox in 1860 and published in the Boundary Historical Society’s 13th report, supports Stevenson: it shows American Town, as well as English Town to the northeast, and “Boundary or Fifteen Mile Creek” with the notation “Gold – gold – gold” along it (but completely omits the Kettle River).

It also shows both parallels — the correct one and incorrect one — nearly 400 yards apart. Judging from the map, American Town existed just southwest of the intersection of Dominion St. and Thomet Rd. in Midway. In 1891, Stevenson said “no trace exists of the place except the remains of some stone chimneys.”

East shore summer school offers an amazing setting The East Shore of Kootenay Lake will be alive with educational opportunities to stimulate the senses this summer with three amazing weeks of classes for the whole family. In partnership with Selkirk College, the East Shore Summer School will be running four camps out of the beautiful Crawford Bay School starting July 21 where participants can learn, play, paint and share with a variety of great teachers and artists. “The East Shore of Kootenay Lake is a spectacular setting and in the summertime we have many part-time residents and visitors,” says Laverne Booth, the Selkirk College Community Education & Workplace Training (CEWT) Program coordinator based out of Crawford Bay. “Grandparents, children, families and individuals will find a place to get inspired in the three-week art and language programs we are offering this summer.” The camps get underway on July 21 with the four-day Shokunin camp. These master classes for adults provide the opportunity to be mentored by the best instructors the Kootenays have to offer. Included in the choices are creative writing with Luanne Armstrong, spontaneous art with Zora Doval, historical writing with Sean Arthur Joyce, popular theatre with Lucas Myers and Krista Lynch, wildlife and nature photography with Jim Lawrence, music and sound with Greg Lostracco, and visionary painting with Danielle Tonossi. “There are few rural areas in Canada where there is such a wealth of experienced

and accomplished instructors,” says Booth. “We are thrilled to have such an amazing line-up of mentors in what is an eclectic offering of classes. Spending four days with these instructors is a terrific opportunity.” Bringing a family feel to the week will be the chance for parents to sign their children up for the Kids SMART Camp (Science Movement and Art) which runs simultaneously. Kids between the ages of six and 12 will have the chance to take part in a variety of activities with art educator Rielle Oswald. The week of July 27 to 31 switches gears to the Medley Arts Camp which is an opportunity for families to explore a number of options together or select individual pursuits. The courses in the Medley Arts Camp include: harmonic voice, children’s choir and theatricks with Bessie Wapp; dance fusion, hip hop jazz, party dance with Slava Doval; samba band and ukulele with Ben Johnson; guitar basic and adult basics with Rita Deane; landscape painting with Shirley Wyngaard; art stations and youth art with Rielle Oswald; marimbas and ukulele intro with Jacqueline Wedge; visionary art with Zora Doval; and Kindermusik with Ellie Reynolds. “We believe that great holidays can happen close to home and we invite families from the region to join us to camp, stay at one of our guest accommodations or visit friends,” says organizer Lorna Robin. “A boy from Nelson who attended Medley Arts Camp last year said was the best week of his life!” For family members not participating in

Medley there are many options on the East Shore to keep you busy like golfing at Kokanee Springs Golf Resort, great biking and hiking trails, canoeing and kayaking, visiting the artisan shops and galleries, or simply hanging out on the beach. The final offering on the East Shore takes place between August 3 and 7 when the Global Gesture Language Camp takes over the Crawford Bay School and community. Open to all ages, small family groupings will take part in language immersion in French, German or Spanish with a range of activities such as cooking, community explorations and signing in world sign language. The Worldsign Communication Society will teach each language group to sign songs in their language which will then allow them to lead songs and activities at a campfire windup celebration on the Friday night. “This camp will bring people together in wonderful ways,” says Booth. “It offers something truly unique and special for a summer camp. Many young children are being raised in French, German and Spanish these days. This camp is an opportunity to bring the whole family and friends to speak together for four days.” The East Shore Summer School is grateful for funding and support through a wide variety of individuals, organizations, local governments and Selkirk College.
