Mayor On behalf of the City of Williams Lake, welcome to the 89th Williams Lake Stampede! Our Stampede is the second-largest Stampede in Canada, and it is known around the world. There is excitement, entertainment and activities for everyone in the family to enjoy, whether you are a Stampede veteran or you are taking in your first rodeo. You will have the pleasure of watching many of the World’s top cowboys and cowgirls in action from events ranging from bull riding to calf roping. On behalf of Council, we owe a huge debt of gratitude to Stampede Association president Fred Thomas and the Board of Directors, who work hard all year, every year, to produce a spectacular Stampede. We are very appreciative of your hard work and dedication. A big thank you also to all of the sponsors and volunteers that continue to make the Williams Lake Stampdede a world-class event. These community members consistently step up to the plate to provide an incredible event showcasing Williams Lake and its ranching history. I invite everyone to take in the many events and activities throughout the weekend, including the Stampede Parade, rodeo events, Canada Day celebrations, Street Party, outdoor pancake breakfasts and Rotary Steak Out, dances, and more! Our home is your home this weekend - enjoy!
Walt Cobb
Good luck to all the cowgirls and cowboys in the rodeo competitions! We know you will have a memorable experience in our community, and we hope to see you all back again next year!
CRD Chairman Welcome to Williams Lake and the Cariboo Chilcotin! On behalf of the Cariboo Regional District Board of Directors and staff, I am pleased to welcome you to the 89th Williams Lake Stampede Rodeo. We wish all of the 2015 competitors the best of luck. Our region is an integral and beautiful part of British Columbia which is known for its hospitality and friendliness. The Cariboo Chilcotin has deep roots in western heritage, ranching and rodeo. It’s an attribute our residents are proud of, and visitors are drawn to. The lure of the “Old West” and quality of life, sets our region aside from any other in BC. We hope you enjoy the action packed excitement of Williams Lake Stampede and while you are here, we encourage you to take some time to experience some of the adventure, and opportunities that our region has to offer. To the many volunteers who have made this event possible, we would like to take this opportunity to extend our gratitude for making this event a success year after year. It is with this kind of support that we can continue Building Communities Together.
Al Richmond
Enjoy the show and your stay in the heartland of BC; the Cariboo Chilcotin!
MLA, Cariboo Chilcotin I am thrilled to welcome you to the 89th annual Williams Lake Stampede! It is one of my favorite events and a great source of pride to the Cariboo-Chilcotin region. Every year thousands of local residents and tourists descend on Williams Lake to take in this world famous rodeo. The rodeo reflects our cowboy heritage and history which is so important to the region. In fact, the Stampede is still held on the same grounds as the first rodeo in 1919 when the railroad was built. As an important stop on the rodeo circuit, it is a summer staple for many families. The rodeo draws in locals and tourists alike with its wide range of fun activities and events such as the Cowboy Hall of Fame at the Museum of the Cariboo in Williams Lake. I would like to thank all of the volunteers and sponsors who make this wonderful event possible. I would also like to recognize Stampede President Fred Thomas and the organizing committee for all their hard work. Without your time and dedication, this event would not be possible.
Donna Barnett
Enjoy the stampede, be safe, and have fun!
MLA, Cariboo North and Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development Welcome to the 89th anniversary of the Williams Lake Stampede! As I write this welcome to you, I am taken back to all of the great events that have been held over the years that celebrate the pioneers of our community and the region as a whole. We should all be proud of the Cariboo-Chilcotin history and the cultural influence the Williams Lake Stampede continues to have on each of us. The culture of the Cariboo is found all around us at stampede from the cowboys, to the riders; the ropers and the performers. That same cultural is in my very own roots, my grandfather Harold Hartley, a lifelong cowboy, was one of the founders of the Quesnel rodeo club and was their first President. I take immense pride in this heritage and culture and know that all of the visitors and residents watching the stampede and enjoying the festivities will leave the events with a better insight about the strengths and values of the Cariboo. Thank you to all of the volunteers and Stampede family who make sure this event carries on – my hat goes off to you! Best wishes and good luck to those competing this weekend – your hard work and dedication to your sport does not go unnoticed!
Coralee Oakes
Enjoy this 89th year of Stampede in Williams Lake! Cowboy up!

How To Watch A Rodeo
Saddle Bronc Riding
Rhythm is the key in this event. The rider spurs from the animal’s shoulders in an arc-like motion toward the back of the saddle in time with the bronc’s actions. The cowboy rides in an “Association Saddle” designed and constructed specially for this event while holding onto a braided buck rein. He wears spurs with dull rowels and chaps of light leather. The length of the rein is important. The cowboy must adjust his grip carefully to maintain balance and avoid either being pulled down over the front end or launched out ‘the back door’. To qualify, the rider must have his boots over the break of the horse’s shoulders until the horse has completed his first jump out of the chute. He will be disqualified for touching any part of the animal or equipment with his free hand, losing a stirrup, or getting bucked off before the end of the eight-second ride. The higher and harder the horse bucks and the better the cowboy spurs-the higher the score.
Tie-Down Roping
Tie-down roping is the most technical event in rodeo. It takes hours of practice to perfect the skills of both the roper and his horse. At the start of the run, the roper must remain behind the barrier until the calf crosses the scoreline. Breaking the barrier adds ten seconds to the roper’s time. After roping the calf, the cowboy must run down his rope and throw the calf by hand. If the calf is down when he reaches it, he must allow the calf to get up and then throw it. The roper then ties any three legs with a pigging string (a shorter rope he carries between his teeth until it’s needed). The tie must hold for six seconds after the roper remounts his horse and during that time his rope must remain slack. The work of the horse is crucial for a fast time. He must rate the speed of the calf, stop on cue in a single stride and then hold the rope taut while the roper runs to his calf. A solid, true working home is difficult to find and commands a high price.
Ladies Barrel Racing
One of rodeo’s most popular events, the Barrel Race requires the rider and her horse to complete a cloverleaf pattern around three barrels. The time starts when the competitor crosses an electric beam of light (start / finish line) and the time is completed when she recrosses the line after completing the pattern. Talented riders on fast, athletic horses that can blaze through the pattern while keeping all three barrels standing are the key to success. A five second penalty is assessed for a barrel being tipped over, effectively knocking the rider out of the money.
Bareback Riding
This event is the most physically demanding in rodeo. The cowboy inserts his gloved hand into the suitcase handle-like bareback riggin which is made of leather and is cinched around the horse. The stress on the riding arm is intense, absorbing most of the horse’s power. The rider will be disqualified for failing to keep his spurs over the break of the horse’s shoulders until the first jump out of the chute is complete, for touching the animal or equipment with the free hand, or for getting bucked off before the end of the eight-second ride. Riders try to spur the horse on each jump, reaching as far forward as they can with their feet, then bringing their spurs back toward the riggin. While they look wild and out of control, the great bareback riders are anything but - keeping their bodies in the middle of the horse’s back while working their spurs to advantage for the entire eight seconds.
Steer Wrestling
Timing, coordination and strength are prerequisites for a steer wrestler. To begin with, he must remain behind the barrier, which is a rope stretched across the front of the starting box, until the steer crosses the scoreline, giving it a prescribed head start. If the cowboy breaks the barrier, ten seconds are added to his time. The horse is trained to run beside the steer and then run on by as the steer wrestler reaches for his steer. The steer wrestler catches the right horn in the crook of his right arm and then must hit the ground with his legs extended forward in order to bring the steer to a halt. Using his left elbow and forearm as leverage under the steer’s nose, he ‘bull-dogs’ the steer to the ground. The steer must be flat on its side with all four legs extended before the official time is awarded. The second mounted cowboy is the hazer and it’s his job to keep the steer running straight, allowing the bulldogger to get down on the steer. Power, control and speed are required from both men and horses as they cover about 150 feet in four seconds from a standing start.
Team Roping
Two contestants, two horses, two ropes, one steer and one barrier rope. Team roping requires close cooperation and timing between highly skilled ropers, a header and heeler. As in other timed events, the team ropers start from boxes on each side of the chute from which the steer is released into the arena. The steer gets a head start depending on the length of the arena. When the steer reaches its advantage point, the barrier is released and the header takes off in pursuit, with the heeler trailing slightly behind. If the header breaks the barrier before the steer completes its head start, the ropers are assessed a ten second penalty. Once the header makes his catch he turns the steer to expose the back legs to the heeler. The heeler then attempts to rope both hind legs. If only one is caught, there is a five second penalty. The clock is stopped when there is no slack in the ropes and the horses are facing each other.
Bull Riding
The most dangerous event in rodeo and the toughest eight seconds in sport. The bull rider inserts his gloved hand into the handhold of a fiat, braided rope which is passed around the girth of the bull, around behind the rider’s wrist and into the palm of the hand one more time. A weighted cowbell hangs on the underside of the rope allowing it to fall free when the ride is completed.. During the ride, the cowboy must keep himself close up on the handhold to prevent his arm from straightening and jerking his hand loose. He will be disqualified for failing to have a bell attached to his rope, touching the bull with his free hand or bucking off before the end of an eight-second ride. Riders are not required to spur, as staying on these strong, athletic, loose-hided and often cantankerous animals is difficult enough. But if the cowboy is able to use his feet, he can improve the mark from the judges. Pick-up men are not used in this event as a bull would just as soon fight a man on horseback as one on foot. The rider must depend on the courage and daring of bullfighters to distract the bull and allow that cowboy to escape to safety. 89 TH ANNUAL WILLIAMS LAKE STAMPEDE ~ JUNE 26 - JUNE 29, 2015 PAGE 6

The Wild Cowgirl Race - by Monica Sellars
The Wild Cowgirl Race was inspired by every girl who thinks they have a fast horse (including me). I had decided from the inspiration of these women that we needed a race just for us crazy horse girls that love to feel the power of an amazing athlete giving you everything they have. It is an amazing feeling that you can get only when you are out there going as fast as that horse can. I had brought the idea of an all women’s flat race to the Stampede Association after the Pony Express Race, that I had competed in for the last two years, was taken out. As this event grows we will get to see some of the fastest horses in the Cariboo ridden by some of the wildest cowgirls from the Cariboo. 2014 was the first year of the Wild Cowgirl Race. This race’s very first winner on day one last year was our newly crowned Williams Lake Stampede Princess Matina Durfeld riding her Palomino “Kokanee”. I am excited to announce that we are doing it again this year! There is also some changes being made to make it even better! I am excited to see all of the new racers. So if you think you have the fastest horse in the Cariboo come and try to prove it!

Welcome to the 89th annual Williams Lake Stampede! My name is Michelle Ball and I am the 2014-2015 Williams Lake Stampede Queen. It has been an hounor to represent the City of Williams Lake and our World Famous Williams Lake Stampede this past year. Travelling far and wide alongside Stampede Princess Matina Durfeld, we were able to travel to many parts of BC, Alberta for the Calgary Stampede and Edmonton for the Canadian Finals Rodeo, not to mention visiting our neighbours South of the board in Omak and Spokane Washington! Throughout my travels I had the privilege of meeting many new people, gaining an abundance of knowledge, and acquiring memories that will last a lifetime. It gave me the opportunity to form friendships that would not otherwise be presented to me. I was especially honoured to meet a very special lady in Calgary who gave us an invitation to her own rodeo in Spokane, Miss Katherine Merck now the 2015 Miss Rodeo Washington. We may be miles apart but our friendships from the rodeo road will always continue to grow. I would like to say a special thank you to Clusko Logging for their generous support for the season. Thank you to the Stampede Association for giving young ladies such as myself the opportunity to mature and grow as individuals, while participating in events that we are able to enjoy while sharing our knowledge of our community and rodeo. Of course a special thank you to my family and friends for always supporting me along my journey, not to mention the Stampede Queen directors and local sponsors for being positive supporters during my reign.
Michelle Ball
2014/2015 Stampede Queen
Its an honour to be passing over my crown to this years queen and extending a job well done to the competitors! Always remember to never give up on our dreams. I hope you enjoy your weekend here with us and gain memories for years to come! It came as quite a shock to me when Alexis Forseille sent Michelle and I the message letting us know that we needed to get started on writing our “Farewell Speeches”. My year as Stampede Princess went by so fast, that it feels like just yesterday I was submitting my contestant form for the Williams Lake Stampede Queen competition. Running for Stampede Queen was a dream that I had since I was a little girl, and last year that dream came true. Although I can’t say being Stampede Princess was a predictable duty, it was definitely worth it. During my reign I got to meet so many different amazing people from directors and volunteers, to rodeo competitors, other rodeo royalty, and of course, rodeo fans! My experiences throughout my year were nothing short of memorable and I have learned values I will keep in my heart forever. I would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who helped me throughout my time as a contestant and Stampede Princess; my sponsors, Rene and Karla Lecerlc from Minton Creek Ranch, my mom, my Grossmami, and all my friends and family. Your support means the world to me, and I couldn’t have done it without all of you.
Matina Durfeld
To my Queen, Michelle, we’ve had a great year of ups and downs and amazing experiences. I’m happy to say I’ve made a friend for life in you and I wish you all the best with your future endeavors. I look forward to watching the new contestants grow into themselves as they continue the honour of representing our city, and my home, Williams Lake.
2014/2015 Stampede Princess God Bless.

My name is Stephanie Warnock and I was born and raised in Williams Lake. I have an undying love for the country lifestyle of the Cariboo. I got my first horse by trading my motorbike for her at age 8. I bought my current horse Trooper as an unbroken 2 year old when I was 15 years old. He is my greatest pride as I broke him to what he is today all by myself. I have a genuine love of horses, the rodeo, and a desire to be involved in this lifestyle. Stampede Queen is a position that gives back to the community in the way of countless volunteer hours at events and I am up for the challenge and demands of this offering of my time and energy.
Stephanie Warnock Miss Minton Creek Ranch
My name is Cheyleigh Sand, I am 17 years old and was born and raised in Williams Lake. I am currently in Grade 12 at Lake City Secondary School and have worked part time at Warehouse One for nearly 2 years. I love my animals, especially horses and dogs. I have three small dogs at home; their names are Belle, Sophie and Baby. My hobbies include horseback riding, relaxing at the lake, watching my favourite YouTube videos, listening to music and spending time with my family and friends. My family has taught me the importance of volunteer work in our community and I have volunteered for several different community organizations starting when I was about ten years old. I love being part of community events and seeing so many people’s hard work all come together for the enjoyment of others. I hope to one day work in the Film and Television industry and travel to many different parts of the world.
Cheyleigh Sand Miss Daybreak Rotary
My name is Paige Brinoni. I am 18 years old. I have a passion for learning and sharing knowledge about horses, our community and the Famous Williams Lake Stampede. My family has a long history of community and involvement. Since 1990 my great grandfather Ralph Overton has been a life time member of the Williams Lake Stampede. My parents and grandparents routinely volunteer for community and school events and have encouraged their children to give back to the community. At four I started dancing ballet and have danced for 12 years. I participated in Fine Arts Festival and performed Shakespeare and poetry pieces. I was involved in school through leadership, mentoring, and sports. I started riding at age two and received riding lessons. I have earned tons of experience helping train horses and working with children in horse camp programs.

Miss Titchener Contracting
I enjoy working with children and have volunteered with the Canada Day Celebration, street parades, Boys and Girls Club, mentoring, leadership, the CDC swim and horsing around, and other multiple community events. I am excited to participate in this year’s Williams Lake Stampede and feel that the skills and friendships I build here will help me become a more confident young woman, helping me reach my goals throughout life. The Williams Lake Stampede Association (WLSA) is excited to unveil its new brand in time for the 89th Annual Stampede. Designed in the style of a traditional cattle brand to represent the connection to the roots of rodeo, the working ranch. Rodeo is unique in many aspects, one of them being that it was born on the cattle ranges of North America as a competition of everyday skills between ranch cowboys and cowgirls. Many of the events we see at today’s rodeos still represent daily tasks on the modern ranch. A brand is still used to identify the livestock of different ranches. Our new brand not only signifies our connections to the past, but also identifies the Williams Lake Stampede. Over this past winter a contest was held, inviting artists to submit designs for a brand worthy of representing “the greatest show on dirt”, the Williams Lake Stampede. From the many outstanding submissions, the brand seen here was chosen to help identify the Stampede as we move forward. While the artist who designed our brand wishes to remain anonymous they have a strong connection to many local events, and are still actively involved in ranching and its way of life.

Bob Breitkreutz - by Gaeil Farrar Bob and Shirley Breitkreutz can’t count the number of hours they have volunteered for the Williams Lake Stampede Association, but its all been time happily spent. “We’ve had a lot of fun in here over the years and worked with lots of great volunteers,” Bob says. Bob, who is receiving a lifetime pass this year, has served two terms as Stampede president, and four years as treasurer. He also served several terms as vice-president and concession director during which time he was one of the driving forces behind construction of the office and concession building behind the chutes. Bob actually started volunteering with the Stampede Association because Shirley had become a Stampede volunteer in the mid-1980s. By 1990 friends were encouraging Bob to get involved as well. Before that his job as a feller-buncher logging contractor kept him away from home a lot.
Gaeil Farrar photo
Shirley started out pre-selling rodeo tickets and Stampede merchandise and working in the office for a few years before moving over to the concession where Bob joined her as the grill cook. Cooking was no problem for Bob because he grew up in a household with three brothers who had all been taught to cook early on by their mother. In those days the concession behind the chutes was a cook trailer rented from the Lions Club for the Stampede weekend. A refurbished stock trailer supplied with electricity housed the fridge and freezer and other produce and supplies. While it might have been a makeshift solution to supplying food for cowboys and volunteers on the run, it was a spic and span operation because most of the volunteers in those days were hospital and health care employees, Shirley says. Construction of the office and concession building started in 1999 and was completed in 2001. It was a huge job involving professional builders to set the foundation and frame up the building and many volunteers to do all of the interior finishing. “It was a lot of work,” Bob says. “We started in the fall and finished four days before Stampede.” The concession was completed about the same time as the association was developing the Stampede campground, so they decided to open up the infield concession to the general public. “We were cooking for rodeo competitors and volunteers anyway so we started inviting the public to come and join us,” Bob says. Since then use of the concession has grown steadily to accommodate five or six events during the year. Bob ran the concession for many years but stepped down as a director a few years ago turning over the job to Kelly Braaten. As a director, Bob says there are jobs to be done all year long. These days Bob and Shirley continue to help out with the concession. They are well prepared ahead of time so people don’t have to wait long for service. It’s never dull. The Stampede has some pretty dedicated volunteers and without them it wouldn’t happen.

behind the Grandstand, Saturday June 27th and Sunday June 28th From a small boy walking around his parent’s living room to the present day Rob has always had a song streaming through his head. In the mid eighties his desires outweighed his fears of performing in front of an audience and he has never looked back. Although working mostly in the country vein, he has honed his craft as a singer over the years which have allowed him to become well versed in a wide variety of musical styles. From a haunting country ballad to a powerful rock song he always delivers with pure passion and high energy. Along the way he has had the great pleasure of entertaining audiences big and small, from large festival crowds to the more intimate settings of a house concert, not to mention the many night clubs, arenas, dance halls and pubs between BC and Newfoundland. Throughout the years he has garnered many fans along the way both young and old and always enjoys spending time with them. Although having many different incarnations of the band over the years, Rob has always attracted high quality talent to accompany him in his musical endeavors which has always kept him in high demand. At present he continues to tour throughout Western Canada attracting new fans wherever he performs and always delivers a top notch show. You won’t be disappointed as there is always something for everyone.

Stampede Poster
www.williamslakestampede.com
This year’s poster named ‘Bullfighter’ was done by artist Marlene Pegg of Quesnel, BC. It is a salute to those who courageously put their lives at risk to protect the lives of others, all for the love of rodeo. The image captures the intensity, agility and split second thinking required of the bullfighter to keep these athletes and performers alive and safe. It’s a three-cord, eight second dance designed to thrill audiences young and old. Marlene Pegg was born and raised in Wainwright, Alberta and moved to the Quesnel area in 1989 where her and her husband and children ranched the Pelican Lake Ranch. She also worked as a horse trainer most of her life. In 2008, she began to work more seriously mainly in acrylic and pencil. She is now retired from ranching and horse training but her passion for these things lives on in her hobby that has turned into a full time profession. Marlene’s business is called ‘Marlene Pegg Western Artist’.

Volunteers of the Year
www.williamslakestampede.com
Jack and Marge Butler - by Gaeil Farrar
Jack and Marge Butler find volunteering with the Williams Lake Stampede Association a great deal of fun. They enjoy the work and the company they meet while painting and cleaning bleachers, and doing other odd jobs leading up to the big event. Marge has been a volunteer for 10 years and Jack has been a volunteer for nine years. “Time flies so fast you think its only a year or two,” Marge says. “My mom got us involved. She is 87 now and still volunteers, sweeping and scrubbing the same as we do.” All the stands have to be swept and washed and painted and the toilets have to be cleaned before the big weekend. And there are also odd fix-it jobs to do. “I’m kind of a handyman fix it guy,” Jack says. “Fred (Thomas, Stampede president) always has little jobs for me up there.” For a Gaeil Farrar photo couple of months before Stampede volunteers meet at the Stampede Grounds on Monday evenings between 6 and 8 p.m. for work bees. There are painting crews and cleaning crews and repair people at work. “There’s a good bunch of people who come here,” Jack says. “Our little bunch works up in the stands.” Marge adds: “After the work we gather in back for hotdogs and coffee and visiting.” Jack says a lot of the high school students from ranches around the region come down to help out. “Close to 200 people work on the grounds for a month and a half,” Jack adds. “It’s hard to keep something like this up if you don’t work at it.” Both Jack and Marge were born in Williams Lake, but raised in the Chilcotin, Jack in Tatla Lake and Marge in Riske Creek. With roots deep in cattle country it is just natural that they gravitated to volunteering with Stampede. Marge is the daughter of Irene and Delmer Jasper and grew up on the family hobby farm with a few cows, horses, chickens, pigs, turkeys and sheep. “You name it we had it,” Marge says. Her dad worked as a grader operator for the Ministry of Highways and was a rodeo competitor and her mother worked for years as a school custodian. Jack is the son of Leonard and Hilda Butler and grew up on a small ranch at Bluff Lake. While both Jack and Marge rode horses in their youth neither one of them has been on a horse for many years. They both attended high school in Williams Lake which is now Marie Shape Elementary and stayed in the old school dormitory which is now the school board office. Ironically, although they were both raised in the Chilcotin, they never met growing up which may be understandable since Jack is nine years older than Marge. They met at a dance held at one of the local pubs. They been together for 33 years and have one daughter Shawna Swanky. Until retiring a few years ago Marge worked 37 years for TELUS and Jack worked as a heavy duty mechanic, heavy equipment operator and truck driver on various projects around the region. When they aren’t helping with the Stampede preparation, Marge and Jack keep an active outdoor lifestyle. They both enjoy hunting, fishing, wild berry picking, and growing a big garden.

Tough Enough to Wear Pink
www.williamslakestampede.com
The Williams Lake Stampede started the TETWP campaign in 2007 and it continues today. Since its inception, the Stampede Association has contributed over $35,000 to various programs and/or people in support of Breast Cancer, or cancer itself. Some of the organizations we have supported since 2007 are the local Cancer Society in purchasing wigs, shampoos, and prosthetics for people within our community. We supported the Cariboo Hospital Trust Foundation in the purchase of a new mammogram unit for our local hospital. In addition, we have helped several people within the community to assist them financially as they travel to and from Williams Lake to receive their treatments.
Angie Mindus photo
To raise these funds, the Williams Lake Stampede Association donates $1 from every ticket sold on Sunday to our sponsorship choice of the given year. Additionally, over the years we have raised funds through the sale of pink bracelets, TETWP ball caps, and a donated afghan from Terry Crosina which we raffle off. Over the last few years, the Cariboo Regional District has run their own campaign as well and have donated their proceeds to our cause of the given year.

Coldwell Century Ranch Charlie and Pat Coldwell are still operating the ranch at Jesmond that has been in their family for 100 years. Originally the Mountain House Ranch, it was purchased in 1914 by brothers Harry and Robert Coldwell and A.J. Drinkell. While Robert and Drinkell served overseas in World War One, Harry and his wife Louise were deemed “essential workers” and stayed behind to raise cattle and other agricultural products for food. The Mountain House was a working ranch as well as stopping place for the BX Stage from Clinton to Dog Creek and beyond. In 1919 Harry became postmaster and was asked to rename the ranch. He decided on Jesmond, the name of a community in England near his birth place. Harry willed the ranch to his son Pete who was born in 1914 and grew up on the ranch. Pete and Joyce Coldwell raised their eight children on the ranch. In 1992, their son Charlie took over running of the ranch when
Pete and Joyce retired to Ashcroft. Ownership of the ranch was transferred to Charlie in 1993 after Pete’s death. He and his wife Pat still operate the ranch and run at least 100 head of cattle and 25 horses.
Tommy Desmond ~ Working Cowboy Thomas F. Desmond was a life-long cowboy. Born in Kamloops, in 1927, he grew up on the family’s dairy farm and orchard. He left the farming life to go work as a cowboy at the Diamond S where he had a friend who was cow boss. He worked at the Diamond S Ranch and Alkali Lake Ranch then tried guiding in the Spatzizi for one summer then returned to work at the Circle S Ranch at Dog Creek as a full time cowboy. Tommy married Marian Pinchbeck and they began their married life working side by side moving cattle from the Dog Creek Ranch to Gustafsen Lake cow camp, a full day trek through 30 miles of swamps and creeks. Tommy managed to drag an old washing machine the 30 miles to make life easier for Marian and their growing family of four children. After 20 years as a working cowboy and cow boss on ranches the Desmonds were able to purchase the Purjue Ranch at the top of Pinchbeck Hill, where they spent the rest of their lives, later adding the neighbouring Felker Ranch to their holdings.
Greg Sabatino photo
As well as operating his own ranch, Tommy rode for the Mission Ranch. He was in the saddle every day until his health began to fail. Tom died September 13, 2006 and Marion continued to operate the ranch until her death in 2010. 89 TH ANNUAL WILLIAMS LAKE STAMPEDE ~ JUNE 26 - JUNE 29, 2015 PAGE 30

Bob Kjos ~ Competitive Bob Kjos has spent his life on the back of a horse working and competing. He has caught wild horses and broke them, he has been an outfitter and is an author. Bob, his wife Maxine and their two children came to northern B C in 1966 from Alberta when they purchased the Toad River Lodge, Mile 422 on the Alaska Highway. With the lodge came 100 head of cattle. They took up a 380 acre homestead across the Toad River, cleared and broke the land to gain title. Over the next years they worked hard to develop a ranch and a home in a beautiful mountain setting. Eventually all the land was broke and Bob could grow enough feed for 100 head of horses and the cattle on the ranch. He jokes that he had the most northern cattle ranch in B C at that time. They also had a huge hunting area and were able to run a successful outfitting business as well as ranching. Bob had his own pack outfit at age sixteen. They sold the Toad River Ranch and moved to Fort St. John and started raising Corriente cattle. Then Bob started team roping and saddle bronc and qualified for the NRA finals 18 times and won the Team Roping Championship four times. He hosted team roping events and supplied roping cattle to the Northwest Rodeo Association’s rodeos in the area.
When Bob was no longer able to rope or fly his airplane, he began painting and writing the story of his life in the saddle. After ten years he was able to get all his stories down on paper and now his book “Horseshoe In My Hip Pocket Lucky Again! “is in its third printing. Bob and Maxine are now retired on their ranch in Montney, just northwest of Fort St. John.
