Local youths are bringing forward 100 Kids Who Care Participants encouraged to donate $10 each towards various causes

T

hanks to the influence of 100 Women Who Care and 100 Men Who Care groups, a new project is in the works which will allow youth and kids to make their own contributions to the community.

One hundred (people) who care groups are a quick fundraising method that aims to bring together 100 people, each with the intent of donating $100 to a chosen charity. The youth group will follow a similar format, but kids will bring $10 to each meeting and the meetings will occur twice a year versus four time a year.

“It’s modelled off of the 100 Women Who Care that’s in the community already.

We just want to get as many kids involved as we can. The idea is to bring $10 to the meeting, and we will meet twice a year, maybe more depending on interest. We’re going to get $10, and when you bring that, you can bring a nomination for a charity that you’d like the money to go towards,” said Jesalyn Reimann, 17, one of three youth who will lead the group forward.

“At the meeting, you will vote which charity you’d like the money to go for that time. One hundred per cent of the money will go to the charity and we want to get as many kids involved as we can.”

In the format of 100 people who care groups, members vote on charities, people explain a bit about them and sometimes members of the organizations are invited to speak on behalf of their charity.

For the 100 Kids Who Care project, numerous charities will be invited to set up booths to spread awareness during the event.

It becomes more like a fair format, where kids can come to learn about different projects that are happening in the City. It’s also an outlet for those programs to maybe pick up some new volunteers,” explained Christine Slaymaker, a member of 100 Women Who Care, who brought the idea forward to her dance pupils.

“It’s kind of going to extend past a meeting and a group – there will be learning opportunities to so the kids can find out about what’s happening in the community.”

For the girls who are heading the project, this serves as an opportunity to demonstrate the impact that youth can have in the community. As well, they wish to show other youth that kids do have a voice and that voice can be heard.

“Being 17, people don’t really give you a voice. I want people to recognize

that I can have an impact in the community. Even just donating $10, you feel a sense of accomplishment as an individual because it’s a part of something but it’s your individual contribution. Once you give that $10, it reminds you that you have value in the community too,” said Jenaea Reimann, 17, Jesalyn’s twin sister.

“It’s nice to be part of something bigger than yourself,” she added.

Between Jesalyn and Jenaea and Neelam Singh, the program is starting

to bloom. All three girls have been selected to lead through their leadership roles in their dance community and their eager desire to see the community reap the benefits of whatever funds they can raise.

“I feel like people our age don’t necessarily get a huge voice in our community just because of how young we are. I thought it was a great way of showing our voices even more and a great thing that we could be a part of.

I’m looking forward to the experience, but also the impact we can make. One

hundred kids can make a big difference in our community,” Singh said.

“I’m only 15, so being able to be a part of something as amazing as this makes such a big difference. You don’t have to do it on your own – there is a bunch of people who want to do it with you, and you’re all striving to meet the same goal. I think it’ll be great to see what we accomplish in this group of people.”

A man charged with impaired driving causing death has made another appearance in Red Deer Provincial Court.

Chad Ryan Connatty, 30, faces numerous charges after a collision on May 20th in Red Deer that resulted in the death of a 44-year-old Springbrook man. He has been charged with impaired driving causing death, operation of a motor vehicle while driving with a blood alcohol level over .08 causing death, impaired operation of a motor vehicle, blood alcohol exceeding .08 and driving while disqualified. He has also been charged with possession of marijuana.

Connatty is currently also before the courts on two other matters.

Red Deer RCMP responded to a collision between a Ford 150 and a motorcycle May 20th at 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of 19th St. and 30th Ave. Witnesses attempted to

administer CPR to the driver of the motorcycle until Red Deer EMS and firefighters arrived. EMS staff worked hard to save the victim, a 44-year-old Springbrook man. He was pronounced deceased at the scene and his next of kin was notified. His name will not be released at the request of the family.

The collision occurred when the truck, which was driving northbound on 30th Ave., attempted to turn left onto 19th St. and collided with the motorcycle, which was driving south on 30th Ave. The victim was wearing a helmet.

An RCMP collision analyst attended and the intersection was blocked off for almost three hours while RCMP conducted their investigation.

Connatty was arrested at the scene for impaired driving causing death and was taken into custody.

Lifestyle NDP releases first Speech from the Throne

BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express The New Democrat Party made their first Speech from the Throne on Monday.

Alberta’s new government opened the legislative session with action to renew democracy and restore stability to health, education and other vital public programs, NDP officials said.

The Speech from the Throne, read by Alberta’s Lieutenant Governor Lois Mitchell, announced Bill 1, An Act to Renew Democracy in Alberta, which will end corporate and union donations to political parties.

“Past governments were too dependent on funds from a narrow range of donors with deep pockets, and too far removed from the interests of ordinary people. We will tilt the playing field back in Albertans’ favour, so their interests will always come first with government,” said Premier Rachel Notley.

Bill 2 of the session will be An Act to Restore Fairness to Public Revenue. It will include an increase in corporate taxes for profitable firms, and the reintroduction of a progressive income tax for earners at the highest income levels.

“This Bill will ask those who have benefited most from the boom times in Alberta to now contribute a little more so that our schools and our healthcare can be

spared from chaos and reckless cutbacks,” said Mitchell.

Corporate tax will be increased from 10% to 12% while small business taxes will remain the same at 3%.

Progressive taxes will also be introduced to Albertans making more than $125,000 a year.

Under the new tax structure, Alberta will continue to have the lowest provincial taxes in Canada, added Mitchell.

“We’re asking those who benefited the most from the boom times in Alberta to contribute just a little bit more to help keep essential services strong. This was a commitment we made in our campaign, and it will ensure that Alberta can continue to invest in the public programs Albertans rely on every day,” said Notley.

An interim supply bill – Bill 3 - will be introduced to roll back health, education and human services cutbacks Albertans voted against in the recent election, and provide stability to key public services, including the public health and education systems, and supports for children, families and Alberta’s most vulnerable citizens.

“This bill will ensure that hospitals can continue to care for the sick, that schools have what they need to educate our children, and that the most vulnerable are protected,” said Notley.

A full budget will be introduced in the fall.

In addition, it was also announced Notley and Official Opposition Leader Brian Jean have jointly proposed a special legislative committee to review Alberta’s elections, whistleblower and conflict of interest legislation.

“Albertans expect the rules governing their elections to ensure that the political process is all about citizens, and not about special interests. They have the right to know that every citizen – including those in the public service – is free to speak out about issues in government.

And they expect clear rules governing conflict of interest,” said Notley.

The committee will be comprised of nine government MLAs and eight opposition MLAs. “Wildrose proposed a careful review of these issues as a key element of our agenda for this new Legislature. I’m pleased to join the premier in proposing this long-overdue review and renewal. We will have a lot more to propose and there will be many issues on which we disagree with this government. But, as I told the premier when we met last week, where we can work together we should, in the best interest of all Albertans. It is hard to imagine a more important issue than protecting and renewing our democracy,” said Jean.

A motion will be presented to establish the committee during the spring 2015 sitting of the Legislature, requesting a report within a year.

Following the speech, Jean said it contains positive measures but lacks key details to address the looming fiscal crisis facing Alberta during a time of economic uncertain-

ty. “We are encouraged by a commitment to work with the opposition to ban corporate and union donations.

Wildrose has long believed political parties should not even appear to be under the influence of special interests,” he said. “But given the serious fiscal situation Alberta is facing, it’s disappointing that there was zero mention today of addressing wasteful government spending. With the most expensive government in Canada, Alberta cannot just tax its way back to prosperity.”

On Friday, Wildrose called for the full budget to be presented to Albertans no later than September, but there was no mention in the throne speech of even a firm timeline or date.

“The NDP should not expect a blank cheque to authorize billions of new spending without giving Albertans a clear picture of the province’s finances and a full picture of when the budget will be in place,” said Jean.

Other elements missing from the throne speech include almost no details on how to reform the delivery of healthcare and no mention at all of agriculture and other significant industries, he added.

“This throne speech was in many ways a promise to have a more detailed throne speech and budget later, and that is disappointing,” said Jean.

“Albertans want clarity on the economic policies and priorities of this government. In our uncertain economic times Albertans want predictability and stability and unfortunately the throne speech did not provide this.” efawcett@reddeerexpress.com

Local man named CEO for 2019 Canada Winter Games

Scott Robinson was named chief executive officer for the Games during a press conference last week.

Robinson was selected from 33 applicants. He will step into his new role this August.

“The opportunity I have been given here is some-

thing that I accept with great pride and passion and certainly I am very humbled,” said Robinson.

“I feel very honoured and it’s a huge opportunity for not just Red Deer but for Alberta.”

Robinson joins the Games team following 23 years with Hockey Alberta, including 10 years as executive director of the Hockey Alberta Foundation. A Red Deer resident for more than two decades,

Robinson was actively involved with the Red Deer Bid Committee as well as the Transition Team that was working with the Canada Winter Games Council and the City of Red Deer to transition from a Bid Committee to a Host Society.

“It’s a slow planning process. Over the next six months to a year we are really going to be in the planning stages and moving things along that way,” he said. “This is really our

Cari, who was on hand for the announcement, said both her and Ron are

excited to continue to be part of the Games. “I’m thrilled and ecstatic to be back home in Red Deer. Red Deer was ready to host the Games and Ron and I are ready to do whatever we can to work with the board and hopefully create Games that are spectacular, full of defining moments not only for our nation of Canada, our province of Alberta, the community of Red Deer and surrounding regions, but for every single person that is going to be participating in those Games. We are committed to do whatever this community needs us to do,” said Cari.

It was also announced that former MLA Mary Anne Jablonski has also joined the board.

A host community can expect to accommodate 3,600 athletes, coaches and managers; 1,500 technical representatives and officials; 450 media and broadcast personnel and 25,000 visitors over the 17-days of competition. OPINION Honouring our fathers It’s a mystery why Father’s Day simply doesn’t stir up the attention that Mother’s Day does. Every year, flowers are sent, phone calls are made, jewellery is purchased and dinner reservations are made in sweeping amounts and numbers to celebrate our mothers – and rightly so.

Come Father’s Day, there aren’t as many ads in the paper for brunches. And there isn’t as much hoopla surrounding the day in general.

That’s a shame, as good fathers deserve to be recognized just as much. The day itself was launched early in the 20th century to complement Mother’s Day. According to Wikipedia, after the success obtained by Anna Jarvis with the promotion of Mother’s Day in the U.S., some wanted to create a similar holiday for other family members and Father’s Day was the choice most likely to succeed.

It was founded in 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd from Spokane and its first celebration was on June 19th, 1910.

Her father, Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, was a single parent who reared his six children in Spokane. After hearing a sermon about Jarvis’ Mother’s Day in 1909, Dodd told her pastor that fathers should have a similar holiday honouring them.

Although she initially suggested June 5th, her father’s birthday, the pastors hadn’t enough time to prepare their sermons and the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday of June.

It did not have much success initially. A bill to accord national recognition of the holiday was introduced in Congress in 1913. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson went to Spokane to speak in a Father’s Day celebration and wanted to make it official, but Congress resisted, fearing that it would become commercialized.

President Calvin Coolidge recommended in 1924 the day be observed by the nation, but stopped short of issuing a national proclamation.

In 1957, Senator Margaret Chase Smith wrote a proposal accusing Congress of ignoring fathers for 40 years while honouring mothers, thus “(singling) out just one of our two parents.”

In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson finally issued the first presidential proclamation honouring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Six years later, the day was made a national holiday when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972.

It was about time. Fathers play a key role in the raising and development of children, and their role is often not recognized as much as it should be.

Of course, not all fathers are exemplary examples, but many are. This Sunday, take the time to show your dad you care and appreciate the contributions he has made to your life.

After all, none of us would be here if it weren’t for our fathers.

Dismayed with the recent passing of Bill C-51 To get right into it, the fact that Bill C-51 was passed in Senate disgusts me. It is invasive, manipulative and creates all too much opportunity for government agencies to abuse and disregard the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Back in January of this year, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced his ‘anti-terrorism’ legislation proposal with Bill C-51, with the first reading being done on Jan. 30th. On June 9th, that bill was passed in Senate (44 votes in favour, 28 against) and is currently awaiting royal assent from Governor General David Johnston.

The broad and circumventive wording of this bill is alarming. It was the most recent addition to a number of bills affecting privacy and security guidelines in Canada, alongside

MENDONSA Bill C-13 (immunity from lawsuits to companies that voluntarily offer information to government) and Bill S-4 (allows companies to voluntarily share information with each other).

The effects of this bill are broad and will change the information sharing standards across Canada.

It grants government agencies the ability to more easily share individuals’ information and by amending over a dozen existing laws in the Canadian Criminal Code.

ernment introduced this legislation under the explanation that this bill will help keep Canadians safe under threat of terrorism.

However, the wording of the bill also changes the current standard of agencies being able to arrest someone on the grounds that an act of terrorism ‘will be carried out’ to ‘may be carried out.’

I get the idea that it’s supposed to be proactive, but in order to do this, the government will receive the powers to bypass the fundamental freedoms of, ”Thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication.”

As a reporter, a writer and a reader I am curious to see when all of this censorship will trickle into media. I’m annoyed because

people already have a hard time trusting newspapers and news outlets so this is going to add even more of a challenge if people begin to be censored on content published online or in print.

Freedom of association is also threatened because if at some point in your life, you associate with someone eventually tied to a terrorist act, your information can be dragged up and shared on the grounds that you yourself may also be a terrorist.

I don’t appreciate the broad definition of terrorism to such as extent that protestors or outspoken online dissent could lead to a charge or label of terror. Also, if people could stop throwing the word ‘terrorist’ around every opportunity, it’d help prevent fear-mongering tactics like

those that pushed this bill towards Senate.

Is it sounding extreme enough yet?

Government agencies will follow more closely the personal lives of citizens through information sharing, slack privacy standards and extending the powers of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) - which is reviewed periodically and by the (severely underfunded) Security Intelligence Review Committee (SIRC).

Really the only part of this bill I find acceptable is the ability for agencies to monitor youth who are posting radicalized statuses, photos or other media on the Internet. I think it’s a great way to prevent a tragedy among a population that is easily susceptible to influence.

Generally, the bill is an

unnecessary scare tactic that Harper and his team created to bring more power to their already overprivileged government.

I am appalled and surprised that Justin Trudeau hopped on board after proclaiming the bill needed to be re-written.

I am upset that the Government of Canada, where people are supposed to be free and expressive, has turned towards such extremes that in all reality aren’t needed.

The proposed legislation creates even more of a power imbalance and should alarm people.

It should be pulled as an option and thoroughly re-written to address the vague umbrella captioning. Better yet, it should be scrapped along with Harper’s regime. kmendonsa@reddeerexpress.com

City passes important population milestone

BY JENNA SWAN Red Deer Express Members of the community gathered last Thursday afternoon in City Hall Park alongside Mayor Tara Veer, City council members, and City staff where it was announced Red Deer has reached a milestone population of 100,000 citizens, making it the first mid-sized city in Alberta to do so.

“Our final count from this year’s municipal census has Red Deer at a population of 100,807,” said Mayor Veer. “This is a transformative, defining, game changing moment - our City is taking our rightful position not only provincially, but nationally with all that we have achieved in terms of our leadership, profile, and contributions in sports, education, tourism, arts and culture, social and environmental sustainability, and as an economic engine and regional hub.”

Mayor Veer added the these opportunities and possibilities are made a reality by the continued growth of the City with the official census reporting a 2.2% increase in population from 2014 with the strongest growth occurring in the areas of Timberlands

and Vanier with 529 and 425 new residents respectively.

“The foundation of our community is based on people engaging in community building - at this juncture in our City history we are building on the successes of the past and making the possibilities of the future a reality,” said Veer.

“We have everything that a large city has to offer, but continue to keep the strong community life that we all desire – Red Deer is 100,807 strong.”

The milestone in shared community history was one Mayor Veer was proud to announce, detailing the community of Red Deer’s strong history which goes back more than 100 years and long before the official incorporation of the City to the Cree, Blackfoot, and Métis people who were later joined by European settlers.

City Manager Craig Curtis stated the City is currently the size of Calgary in the post-war era and with current growth rates he anticipates Red Deer will reach 200,000 in less than 20 years.

Gaetz United Church celebrates 90 years

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Red Deer Express The Gaetz United Church celebrated last week by ringing the church bell a total of 90 times, one for each year since the United Church was established in Canada.

On June 10th, the community came together with cake and a BBQ to celebrate the event as they joined hundreds of United Churches across the country in making a joyful noise – in Red Deer’s case, 90 tolls of the historic bell.

“Across the country, United Churches have been invited to make a joyful noise, or ring church bells or hand bells. Literally from coast-to-coast, starting this morning in Newfoundland & Labrador at 10:30 a.m., bells started ringing after that all the way here to us in Alberta.

“It’s just a way that we can each in our own time zones celebrate the time of 10:30,” said Minister Jeff Rock.

“Ninety years is a lifetime and we like to think it’s a beginning. It’s really just a flash in the pan of the longer Christian history.

We’re a thriving, exciting downtown congregation here in Red Deer. As Red Deer’s downtown is redeveloping, we’re finding ourselves re-birthing,” he added.

“We share a lot of history with Red Deer, we’re 25 years older than the City. Leonard Gaetz and his brother Isaac founded this

congregation in 1887. A lot of history is in this community.

“This year marks the 128th year of the congregation. It’s been 90 years of us being a United Church, when the Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregationalist churches came together.”

The bell has a special significance to the church and only adds more rich history to the community.

The original church building burnt down in 1955 and at this time the bell was sold to a neighbouring Hutterite community. It was sold at some point to another Hutterite colony and then to another.

“After it was sold and re-sold and resold, it was eventually lost in time. As part of the 1887 centennial of the church, Norma Martin (and others) decided it would be a good project to find the bell.

“They set out to do so, and after much research they found that the bell was at a Minburn Colony east of Edmonton and so they asked if could we buy the bell back.

The colony needed it but offered to give it back if a replacement could be found.

“In 1990 the bell was returned and installed.”

The church has gone through many historic changes and significant events since its inception and is a cornerstone of Red Deer’s history. kmendonsa@reddeerexpress.com

No one knows for sure when the ďŹ rst aboriginal peoples arrived in Central Alberta. We can only guess the arrival occurred near the end of the last Great Ice Age when the continental glaciers had melted back to allow human habitation along the edge of those huge ice sheets. However, there are those who insist that these Old Ones have always been here, well back into time immemorial.

There are no written records. There is only rather spotty archaeologic evidence, usually involving the stone tools used by these ancient hunters and gatherers. One of the best archaeological sites for determining the length of human habitation in Red Deer is located at the top of Piper’s Mountain in Rotary Park. In 1984, archaeologists found evidence of campsites and animal butcher sites that were several millennia years old at the top of the hillock.

Some of the earliest written records can be found in the journals of Anthony Henday, an English explorer and fur trader who worked for the Hudson’s Bay Company and visited this area in 1754. He found a First Nations’ culture that was at the height of its wealth and power.

Central Alberta was the part of North America where the horse and the gun were ďŹ rst combined.

Guns and horses provided a boost in hunting. Consequently food, shelter and clothing became plentiful.

early 1880s, warfare had broken out amongst the First Nations.

By the later part of the 19th century, the bison vanished. In the early 1890s, the Red Deer Indian Industrial School was built west of the City.

The school was a terrible place. At one point, it had the worst mortality rate of any First Nations residential school in Canada. The school closed in 1920.

However, the lives of many the aboriginal peoples of Central Alberta remain ones of discrimination, as well as economic and social challenge.

Therefore, National Aboriginal Day gives us a chance to reect on the aboriginal culture that was the hallmark of Central Alberta and all the terrible events and experiences which have followed, once those aboriginal peoples were largely displaced from their homelands from time immemorial.

Hence, the First Nations found by Henday in Central Alberta – members of the Blackfoot confederacy who collectively called themselves ‘Soyi-Tapix’ or ‘the Prairie People’ – were rich, powerful and feared. The chiefs’ tent was large enough to accommodate more than 50 people.

LANE CLOSURES FOR THE 55 STREET IMPROVEMENT PROJECT Lane closures have started on a section of 55 Street as year two of the 55 Street Improvement Project is underway.

On June 13th, the westbound lanes on 55 Street closed from 48 Ave. to 46 Ave. with single lane traffic open in each direction. Later this week, the eastbound lanes will close and single lane traffic will switch to the other side of the road.

Beginning June 27th, both eastbound and westbound lanes on 55 St. from 48 Ave. to 46 Ave. will completely close (including sidewalks), and beginning July 1st, 55 St. from 46 Ave. to the top of Michener Hill will close.

These closures will last until early September. At all times either the intersection of 45 Ave. and 55 St. or 42A Ave. and 55 St. will remain open for residential access.

Trails on either side of 55 St. directly east and west of the creek will also close June 27th.

Contractors are upgrading underground utility services, including water and sanitary sewer, which are at capacity and approximately 60 years old. They will also be repairing 55 St. which was identified for maintenance and repairs by the City’s Roads in Need program. New sidewalks and a new multi-use pathway will also be added along this stretch of roadway.

Commercial construction was up in May over last year by an estimated $2.1 million.

Contributing to this increase was a permit issued to Datum Contracting & Millwork for a

new Arby’s restaurant located at 100, 6880 50 Ave. with a cost of $1.8 million.

Also contributing to commercial permit values was a permit issued to Dan Waters Construction Ltd. for renovations to the C.A.R.E. offices, located at #200, 5000 50 Ave. with a construction value of $380,000.

WASKASOO NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN AVAILABLE FOR VIEWING The draft Waskasoo Neighbourhood Plan is available for residents and other stakeholders to review and make comment on at www.reddeer.ca/waskasoo.

In collaboration with the Waskasoo Community Association over the last year, the City has prepared a draft Neighbourhood Plan to guide development and redevelopment in the neighbourhood for the next 10 to 25 years.

The plan will guide new or existing owners wanting to upgrade or redevelop their properties in the area. Captured in the plan are the historical homes, tree-lined streets, variety of public service facilities and abundance of green space that comprise this neighbourhood. The plan outlines a vision and strategy, as well as details on the neighbourhood’s demographics, history, environment, as well as amenity and infrastructure improvements.

Consisting of an Area Redevelopment Plan and a Community Plan, the draft aligns with the community’s desires, the City’s Strategic Plan and several other plans and strategies.

The plan will go to City council and a public hearing will be held before it receives final approval in the fall.

Canadian Blood Services seeks further support

BY JENNA SWAN Red Deer Express Newly-elected Red Deer North MLA Kim Schreiner visited Canadian Blood Services last Friday where she met local long-time blood donors and wished to thank donors for rolling up their sleeves.

Her visit also marked the kick-off of National Blood Donor Week, which aims to thank donors for their continued commitment and to encourage new donors to consider making an appointment.

Schreiner noted while on her way to the blood clinic that day she witnessed a minor fender bender in front of her.

She noted if the accident had been worse, perhaps a

victim might have needed blood - adding it reminded her of the importance of blood donation.

While she isn’t a regular donor, she was in the Canadian Blood Services system when she arrived and stated she had donated in the past and hopes to continue again on a regular basis.

During the time she was giving blood, Schreiner met with local blood donor Ron Regehr who has been giv-

ing blood since he was 17 and has donated 38 times.

Regehr stated he felt continued blood donation was a way for people to be able to give back to their community in a big way.

“There are people encountering a need for blood constantly whether it be through accidents or surgeries and other situations where if they didn’t have blood given to them they

would not survive,” said Regehr.

“So it’s absolutely important on so many levels in our medical system to have that stock of blood there for when they need it.”

Judy Jones, associate director for Canadian Blood Services said the importance of long-term donors could be seen in people like Regehr who continually support the system, adding

he is also good at getting new donors through the door. “Life gets busy and sometimes you can’t find the time to donate, so the best thing you can do is encourage others to come in,” said Jones.

POLICE BRIEFS POLICE LOOK FOR IDENTITY THIEF Red Deer RCMP continue to look for public assistance to identify a woman who used stolen identification to receive fraudulent loans at several payday loan companies.

The suspect used identification from a purse that had been stolen from a parked vehicle in January of 2015 in Red Deer.

In June, the victim of that theft began to receive payment demands from a payday loan company in Red Deer and learned that her stolen identification had been used by an unknown

woman to take out a loan of almost $1,500.

Tthe same female suspect took out another loan at a cash company in Ontario, producing fake documentation such as pay stubs and banking information at both locations to back up the stolen identification.

RCMP ask anyone with information that will help identify this suspect to contact the Red Deer RCMP at 403343-5575.

RCMP INVESTIGATE TWO FRAUDS Red Deer RCMP are looking for public assistance to identify a man who defrauded two Red Deer senior citizens of thousands of dollars in the same week by impersonating a bank ‘securities’ officer who needed them to help catch a thief.

Earlier this week, Red Deer RCMP reported that on June 3rd, an 84-year-old woman received a phone call from a man claiming to represent the TD Bank located at the Village Mall.

He told the victim her account was being tampered with and instructed her to withdraw money and meet him in the parking lot at the Village Mall the same day. In this scam, the suspect typically spins a story whereby the victim is led to believe they are helping to catch a thief, and swears the victim to secrecy. In this case, the victim was defrauded of over $3,000.

Red Deer RCMP have since received a second complaint where a 90-year-old woman was defrauded of almost $6,000 in a similar scam on June 9th.

In this case, the scammer asked the victim to meet him in the parking lot of the Chapters store in south Red Deer.

In both incidents, the scammer went by the first name ‘Thomas’.

Based on similarities between these incidents, at this time RCMP believe both scams were perpetuated by the same person and are urging the public to assist in identifying the suspect.

The suspect is described as Caucasian, about 6’ tall with a slim build and thinning hair. He was wearing a light coloured shirt and khaki pants. RCMP ask anyone with information that will help identify this suspect to contact the Red Deer RCMP at 403-343-5575.

RCMP urge everyone to educate themselves and the vulnerable people in their lives about common telephone frauds. If you suspect that someone you know is being targeted, don’t criticize them for being naïve.

If someone is asking you for money, ask a lot of questions, ask to see identification, and do your own research to confirm that the person, business or charity is legitimate.

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre reports criminal telemarketers can be relentless in hounding people – sometimes calling five or more times a day to wear down their victims’ resistance.

RCMP further urge people to treat their personal information with care – never give out personal information over the phone, and shred old bills and statements.

Red Deer RCMP are investigating a theft from the 67th St. Wal-Mart on May 15th.

An aboriginal man and woman left the store with a large number of electronics without paying. The woman went to the electronics department and stated she had a purchase order. The clerk gave her iPads, tablets and computers. A total of 79 items were stolen, worth $3,700. RCMP urge anyone who encounters these items or has information that will help identify the suspects to contact the Red Deer RCMP at 403-343-5575. ENTERTAINMENT Regina singer brings original styles to City June 24th

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express Described as an ‘old soul, baritone, beatnik-folk singer/songwriter’ hailing from Regina, Keiffer Mclean is set for his first Canadian west coast tour. He performs in Red Deer at The Velvet Olive on June 24th.

Mclean had a very successful 2014 with the release of his debut full-length CD Drama in the Attic.

The album is a strikingly lush and original listen that received recognition from the 2014 Canadian Folk Music Awards garnering him a nomination in the ‘Young Performer of the Year’ category.

For Mclean, 21, a leaning towards music came early on. He started off taking piano lessons from his grandmother now and then, and then along came a guitar and that pretty much hooked him. During those teen years, a gift for songwriting also started to surface along with his baritone voice. It’s like several talents were forming at the same time, seamlessly merging as he approached his 20s and made the decision to follow a path to music full-time.

“I always knew that I wanted to do something in the arts,” he said. “I was really into photography and the visual arts, and then I found music, and I knew that’s what I wanted to do. So right out of high school I started performing.

“And as I was growing up, a lot of my influences were middle-eastern and African,” he explains, adding that his father played percussion for a belly dance group, and his mom was a belly dancer. His aunt also played lots of Bob Marley during those formative years too. Mclean said many of the influences he heard during those years have seeped into the material he performs today.

In high school, he joined the choir pretty much as a joke. But soon the skill he displayed vocally proved to be anything but.

“My friend and I were pretty immature at the time,” he laughs. “So I ended up a singing a bit, and I got really into it.”

Ultimately, as mentioned, much of his skills overall as a musician started to come together with the discovery he had a knack for songwriting. “I didn’t want to take lessons for guitar and my vocabulary on the guitar was limited. So I figured the best way to learn the guitar was to write – I thought if I kept writing new things, that would also give me direction. The writing aspect also came into it because I knew that if I was going to do music, I didn’t want

to be only doing covers. Also, my voice is a little bit deeper than a lot of the stuff I was listening to, so I wrote to accommodate my voice. And then I just fell in love with writing, I suppose.”

For Mclean, the songwriting process is different every time a new tune comes to be. “I really make it a point not to limit myself in the process at all. When I started songwriting, it was to explore my guitar, explore my voice and explore my lyrics. So every time I write a song, it’s like a meditation and an exercise where I’m trying to go somewhere new with my thinking process.”

So really, it’s never a strict formula of writing music first, or coming up with the lyrics right off the bat. It’s far more of a mysterious, organic journey.

“The song is already kind of there – that’s how I like to look at it. You are kind

of just digging for it in a different kind of way.”

It’s primarily a solo effort as well – Mclean isn’t one to typically collaborate with others when it comes to crafting new material. “I’m quite an introverted writer – I’ve only experienced the writing process with one other person and that was my best friend at the time. I find it hard to cowrite. Songwriting is so personal.”

Often groups of people will come together in the songwriting world to create new music – a notion Mclean said he just wouldn’t be comfortable with. He can’t imagine blending so many differing perspectives into a single tune that would work well, unless it was about something comparatively objective.

When it came time to prep for Drama in the Attic, Mclean recalls having numerous songs to select from. “Generally I have 40 to

50 songs on the go at any given time. Generally, those songs connect to each other – like a stream of songs. It’s kind of representing a larger span of my life rather than just a day or week or something like that.”

The tunes that landed on the disc were selected primarily via their themes and keys.

“They all kind of tie into each other through a larger stream of consciousness and similar subjects I feel.”

Meanwhile, inspiration flows from virtually any source. “Anything – whatever ‘has’ me in that particular day or particular moment. And it can really vary – sometimes it’s music, other times it’s something weird,” he laughs. “It’s really just all over the place.

“Songwriting to me is like mapping out your mind – it’s like a medium for that.”

Red Deer Players offers powerful punch with Twelve Angry Men

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express There is plenty of raw emotion and compelling drama firing up the Scott Block Theatre stage currently with Red Deer Players’ superb rendition of Twelve Angry Men. The production runs through to June 20th with curtain at 8 p.m.

Directed by Lori Lane, the play concerns the deliberations of the jury of a homicide trial. At the beginning, the men have a nearly unanimous decision of guilt, with a single dissenter of not guilty, who throughout the play sows a seed of reasonable doubt.

That little seed grows as the men rehash, re-enact and dissect the details of testimony they heard throughout the course of the trial. The picture grows cloudier – and the question of ‘reasonable doubt’ cannot be

ignored any longer. But it’s by no means an easy path to a unanimous decision. Personal judgments, opinions, prejudices and past experiences spill over into the heated discussions and we see quite vividly the real reasons why some of the men hold so staunchly to their views regarding the guilt of the accused.

Lane has done a remarkable job in guiding what must have been a most challenging production to stage. It can’t be easy working with a large cast, and drawing out such a range of intensity as the play’s momentum builds. But Lane has done it, and it all works very, very well.

Of course, the cast has lived up to the demands of the script as well. Albert Azzara, as juror number 10, can always, always be counted on for a superb turn in anything he is featured in. In this play, he shows a powerful dramatic edge as compared to

his usual comedic side and does an exceptional job.

Also outstanding is Nigel Lane as juror number 3. This man is on a mission, initially, to convict the young man, pretty much no matter what. Nigel is terrific – a mix of deep anger and deep pain, the reasons for which eventually surface. With 12 men in the show, there are limitations to how much various actors can contribute – but suffice it to say there isn’t a weak one in the bunch. They all have to be ‘on’ all of the time as not one of them ever leaves the stage for the duration of the show. Every expression, movement, every

grimace – you name it – is there for audiences to see. And the men as a whole nail those challenges, again and again.

Twelve Angry Men was first made as a 1954 teleplay by Reginald Rose for the Studio One anthology television series, and was aired as a live production on Sept.

20th, 1954. The drama was later rewritten for the stage in 1955.

The play is indeed a story of drama and intensity, which has fueled its status as an enduring film and theatrical production.

It’s a clever story, and grabs a person’s attention from the get-go and pretty much doesn’t let go. Congratulations to all involved for staging a powerful production that really works on so many levels.

“There were so many people who didn’t get the opportunity to see it the first time,” he said. “I said, let’s come back and give them a treat and make it a little bit bigger this time around.

“We’ve added a bunch of numbers, and we have another special guest coming with us –there will also be a few new costumes, and a photo op with me as Liberace at the end,” he explained. “We are also doing a bit of backstage stuff so people can have a little tour of the show before the show – that way, they can come into the dressing room and see what it’s like backstage to see Liberace as he prepares before the show – a VIP kind of thing.”

Labelle, who has been teaching and directing in the Edmonton area for the past five years, is a rec-

ognizable name to local audiences, as he has been involved in many local productions over the years.

Meanwhile, the concept for the show surfaced last year. It’s been an imaginative journey ever since as Labelle has delved into Liberace’s legendary, flamboyant world.

Known for his over-thetop costumes, stage sets and bigger than life personality, Liberace’s storied career stretched from the 1950s until his death in 1987. Labelle’s show captures songs from various periods of Liberace’s journey. And back in January, Labelle recalls being overwhelmed at the response he received in Red Deer.

One elderly lady, who was blind, spoke to him after the show about how pleased she was with his performance.

“She had seen Liberace back in her younger years, and she came up to me afterwards and said, ‘That was absolutely the most beautiful treat I’ve ever had’. She felt my hands, my rings. She said, ‘Thank you for bringing Liberace back to me’. I was like, that is why I entertain!”

Things people do in summer that make them fat Every year we see it over and over again - things get quiet in the gym, people cancel personal training or boot camp or stop coming in general because they are ‘too busy’ and ‘outside a lot and active so don’t need the gym’. Guess what? We see them come back every September having gained 5-15 lbs of unhealthy body fat too! Every year.

I do not disagree that summer is busy and that we are outside more, but we also do give things that make us fat in summer.

1) As I said, people stop coming to the gym or working out consistently. Being active outside is a great addition to your regular focused gym session, but it will not replace it. Gardening is great, but it does not replace boot camp, it’s not even close.

Softball, golf, paddleboard etc., are all wonderful activities but they do not have the completeness and the intensity of a good

2) Summer means food that may not serve your goals, and a ton of excuses for eating off plan. Sure, hot dogs, burgers, ice cream and perhaps a beer are all fun to have once in a while, but if you couple that with a reduced gym schedule, it is a one two punch that will have you gain pounds! Summer seems to be a free for all excuse to eat whatever is offered and not worry about it. Potato salad is yummy but that half a plate will pack in more calo-

ries than you could ever burn. Barbeques every weekend are great, but if you think of it as a free for all to eat as much as you like, you will have to deal with the added pounds in fall.

3) Alcohol may help you loosen up a little and wine can be good for you, but summer seems synonymous with excessive alcohol and that leads to all sorts of issues.

Remember that alcohol is seven calories per gram (protein and carbohydrates are four cal/g and fat is nine cal/g). Alcohol is nearly the same as fat for calories, so that big old glass of beer might as well be a glass of butter. That’s fine once in a while, but if being lean is your goal, several beers a day because ‘it’s summer’ won’t serve you. And the big thing is once you have a few, your food decisions will likely change too - for the worse.

4) Going to bed later because the sun is up so long, and snacking. Those extra few hours of awake time can lead to snacking over and above your regular routine and that too, will pack on the pounds.

5) Eating out more because of so many things - outdoor patio restaurants, to avoid cooking in your over heated home, to meet up with friends after a ball game, etc. In addition to affecting your wallet, all those restaurant meals are designed for taste which always means fat and sugar.

As always, I am not saying you cannot enjoy summer and indulge a little here and there, but when summer becomes an excuse to not take care of yourself through regular good habits like exercise, and eating well, then you will pay for it later.

Do you really want to be a millionaire?

What would I do if I wanted to be rich? I’d start a class action suit against food companies for their role in creating ‘the perfect storm’, the three major epidemics in this country. After all, a judge has recently created the ‘perfect guidelines’ for a win/win situation. He ruled that smokers can be rewarded for ill health or death. Of course, it’s not their fault they ignored health warnings for 50 years about smoking!

But since obesity causes more deaths than smoking, why shouldn’t food companies also reward us for our ill health?

Faced with a class action suit, food companies wouldn’t have a leg to stand on in court. Consider the junk they’ve been selling

Moreover, your ophthalmologist is worried that due to diabetic complications you may eventually lose your sight. To add more insult to injury, diabetes has caused such hardening of arteries (atherosclerosis) that renal failure is a distinct possibility. You can plead with the judge the suffering may entail renal dialysis or a kidney transplant.

You may say to yourself, “How did all this happen?”

But you know damn well how. Your doctor repeatedly told you long before you hit the scale at 200 pounds that this excess weight would most likely cause Type 2 since other family

members also suffer from this disease. But in spite of his warning about the need to exercise and diet, you ignored his advice.

However, the fact that you were warned about health problems isn’t the point. Life has become a living hell because food companies continue to add excessive amounts of calories to packaged foods. Or they have made prepared food so appealing that will power can’t resist it.

For instance why are supermarkets foolishly selling 14 ounce steaks when smaller ones would satisfy.

Do they expect all of their customers to have degrees in nutrition? And why do they tempt you to purchase desserts loaded with hundreds of calories. It is

dishonest, deceptive marketing, the ultimate culprit that has ruined your health. Someone has to pay for it.

In fact, if getting rich is the motive, why stop at food corporations? After all, because of excessive drinking your wife and children left you. Think of the alimony you’re paying every month!

But this problem was not self-inflicted. It was the damn liquor companies that should have realized you were becoming an alcoholic.

One could go on and on blaming various aspects of society for our own self-inflicted problems. So this $15 billion verdict against several tobacco companies is the wrong health message.

In 2015 North Americans would have to be living on Mars and have half a brain not to know that tobacco kills. I’m no friend of these companies, but they should not have to reward people

for lack of discipline. Nor make them rich for irrational reasons.

If anyone should be sued, it should be the government which for years allowed tobacco to be sold legally while it reaps the reward.

If tobacco were introduced to the world today, it would be immediately banned as a hazardous substance. It contains 4,000 chemicals of which 40 are known to cause cancer in humans!

This is another example of an illogical ruling by a court. But it is sad that society has reached a stage where individual responsibility is forsaken. Those who abuse their bodies with tobacco, drugs and alcohol cost us billions of dollars a year. This is bad enough, but to reward them for their folly is utter madness.

Jesse Fox ready for comeback this Friday night

BY JENNA SWAN Red Deer Express It’s been 10 years since Jesse Fox (4-5-0), co-owner of Havoc Fighting Championship, stepped into the octagon for the first time.

Although he and fellow co-owner Ryan Machan own their own octagon for the Havoc championships, it has been nearly four years since the last time Fox took to the cage for a fight following a seconddegree concussion that left him unsure if he’d ever return to the ring again.

The date was Nov. 11th, 2011. Fox was in the ring against Allan Munroe (5-50) – a seasoned fighter out of Independent MMA. It was but a short 35 seconds after they touched gloves before Fox found himself at the mercy of Munroe’s mighty reach.

“The doctor said there’s a good chance I went into that fight with a minor concussion, so when I got hit once I went to sleep in the first punch of the night,” he said.

Concussion’s are common amongst MMA fighters and are defined as a head injury with a temporary loss of brain function.

Concussions cause a variety of physical, cognitive and emotional symptoms, which may not be recognized if subtle.

Fox was unsure if he would ever return to the ring.

“It was an eye-opening experience and it was scary. I could still train a little bit but I would shake my head and get a headache. I would get depressed because I couldn’t be training like I wanted to be and that made me not want to do anything.

“I stopped training for a while and then it just got worse. I got in a really bad car accident where a guy ran a red light and t-boned me – it injured my shoulder and knee and that was essentially it for my MMA career until now.”

Despite being unsure if he would ever fight again, Fox will be making his highly-anticipated return to the cage on June 19th in the Havoc octagon against local fighter Brent Harvie (2-1-0) out of Kensei MMA. “I’m 32, and I was con-

templating packing it in because the training is so grueling,” said Fox who trains five days a week on top of a full-time job and helping his wife raise their two children, as well as helping Machan run Havoc. “But it’s fun and the last two months have been incredible – I’m happier and I get to punch guys in the chin again.

“It was one of those things that if I didn’t fight again at least a few more times then I know I’ll be 50-years-old one day sitting

there and telling myself I’m an idiot.”

Fox said his love of MMA was born from watching the debut season of The Ultimate Fighter, a TV show which arguably fostered a generation of UFC fans as the audience watched UFC legends Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture coach two teams of fighters.

Fox began searching for local gyms and came in contact with Gary Vig of Arashi Do Martial Arts.

Fox said he is eager for Friday’s fight stating he knows Harvie well and knows he is a great fighter.

Home designs for your home-based business Last week I had the joy of visiting my best friend in St. Johns Newfoundland, it was wonderful being back on the coast and experiencing the unique vibe culture and seriously relaxed vibe! While trekking around Cape Spear we toured an old lighthouse which was staged with relics of a long forgotten, simpler time when people had little and worked very hard for their possessions. Walking through that working home I had two thoughts – 1. I wouldn’t want to haul up and down those steps every day. 2. This could very well be one of the original home-based businesses!

My girlfriend runs her own home-based business in St. Johns and was an exceptional tour guide in between her business calls and emails.

The amazing thing is that we can now conduct business in our vehicles or standing on the coast watching the crashing waves at Cape Spear.

She has a designated office space which

The variety of home business start-ups are mind-boggling, I have visited clients who are running day homes, interior design businesses, import/export and many others who offer spa services and crafting right out of their homes.

Every business has its own challenges when it comes to designing the perfect space for conducting day to day transactions.

If you have a business that brings people into your home on a regular basis, it is nec-

essary to create a separate space for your clientele that is professional yet does not interfere with daily life. If you are bringing a client in for massage therapy then you will want a tranquil space that isn’t adjacent to the kitchen where your family will gather for meal times!

Sometimes you have to give up the space in your home to accommodate your business.

The first job I had as a designer was with a (very) small design firm which was ran out of the home. The homeowner/designer had converted her basement to a showroom which had perfect access from the front door making it easy for clients to come in and visit us.

The drawback was that every window covering, fabric and wallpaper that was ordered had to go into the garage until it was delivered to the clients.

This meant no vehicles could be parked in her garage when work was busy as it

was stuffed full of orders! The sacrifice was worth it as she enjoyed working out of her home and being around when her girls came home from school.

Your workspace may flow with your house or it may be completely separate depending on the needs of your business.

It may even have a completely different design style if you truly want a separation of work and home.

Creating a different design colour scheme may help you mentally transition from home to work as you go about your day.

To all of you entrepreneurs working from your homes every day, I salute you.

It isn’t always easy to give a part of your home over to your business but I’m sure the rewards of not having to commute everyday and to sometimes work in your bathrobe are worth the sacrifice.

Ten per cent - credit mix – ideally you should have at least one credit card with a minimum limit of $2,500 along with another credit card or a fixed loan such as a vehicle.

They need something to base your credit score on so if you have paid out a loan then make sure you still have two others reporting for you.

You can write into either Equifax or Transunion for a free copy of your credit report at any time.

This can take a few weeks though so there is always the option of going to the web sites.

For $23.95 plus GST you will get an immediate copy of your credit report including your credit score.

And there you have it, your credit score demystified.
