At their chief’s gathering June 2 the energy company met with 30 First Nations from more than 50 traditional houses who also say ‘yes’ to partnering with ESE. After a day of presentations from top global environmental, pipeline and energy experts, participants heard from key leaders and chiefs as to why they were supporting ESE. Chief Louie said he will continue to focus on the protection of the land as a way to support moving resource development projects forward in B.C. encouraging both the B.C. and Alberta governments to engage in a more meaningful and respectful way. “I’ve researched it and there are more than one billion cars in the world sold each year, 17,000 commercial airlines and just about 50,000 ships running product. I look at all these things and think, no matter who you are, oil depends on these things. Everything in your car is made with oil, every plastic bag and plastic bottle. It’s not going to stop so, how can we do this to make it safe. If it’s going to happen it’s going to happen so is there a safe way to allow it to happen?� Chief Louie said.

At the gathering, developing an environmental model for all users of natural resources was discussed and how no one should provide a blanket endorsement on

resource development.

However, hundreds of aboriginals, including Geraldine ThomasFlurer of Saik’uz First Nation in Vanderhoof, are still not fully convinced and would like to see the changes Chief Louie speaks about. “If we’re talking about creation of environmental laws, that’s what were fighting for so anything that is going to put our laws out there we are definitely in support of it. That doesn’t mean I’m in support of Eagle Spirit but definitely in support of enforcing our laws.�

From the beginning, Eagle Spirit has actively met and engaged with First Nations along the proposed pipeline route initiating First Nation input.

Their approach has been to give aboriginal people the opportunity to address environmental concerns and to accommodate proportional economic value in the projects equity. “But these things are not about money it’s about the environment reform in B.C. and [Eagle Spirit] told me if the environments not safe were not doing anything,� Chief Louie said.

Eagle Spirit has proposed that the environmental model needs to be developed by aboriginal people.

Chief Louie expressed his interest in their approach to developing a world-class environment model. “The Eagle Spirit proposed model may afford our communities and others with a timely opportunity to confirm our support for an initiative that promotes our roles as environmental stewards‌a role that is often ignored by government and industry,â€?

Chief Louie said in a press release.

Nechako Valley junior crushes provincial-wide records at high school track championship Rebecca Watson Omineca Express Nechako Valley Secondary School grade eight student Simon Nemethy accomplished what he set out to do at this years provincial track championship.

The 48 annual provincial high school track and field races were held in Langley June 4 to 6 on three of the hottest and driest days seen this summer.

“It was really hot the whole time but I had lots of fun. It feels really good I broke two records and broke my brothers record,” Nemethy said.

Beating out competitive students from 114 different high schools, Nemethy came first in both the 1,500 and 3,000 meters races setting new provincial-wide records and personal best times.

“For Simon to be the number one guy

from B.C and he’s from this town is just awesome,” NVSS track and field coach Brian Nemethy said. “Obviously I’m so proud of him. The times are quite fast, it wasn’t an easy win, and he smashed those records really well. Not to mention he’s a hockey boy that just likes the running but clearly does well at it. I’m just so happy for him.”

The junior high schooler athlete beat the old 1,500 metre time previously set

by Ross Wiens at 4 mins 31 seconds with a new record breaker and personal best time of 4 mins and 29 seconds. Nemethy also beat the 3,000 metre race time previously set by his older brother and now senior, Alex Nemethy, by eight seconds.

The former record held by Alex was 10 minutes and two seconds. Simon ran it in nine minutes and 54 seconds.

Simon is now gearing up for upcom-

ing club track meets and says it will be different since the distances get shorter.

“Instead of 1,500 metres its 1,200 metres and instead of 3,000 metres its 2,000 metres, so my new goal is just to break my times from last year,” Nemethy said.

Seven students from Nechako Valley took part in the province-wide track and field tournament. The requirement was placing top two at the regional track and field meet that was held last month in Prince George. “I’m really proud of the entire team. Seven of them went down and we had lots of personal bests. Individually they did well and quite a few of them broke NVSS school records again.

They worked so hard and because they are in competition with people faster, they just keep getting better. It shows what good competition can do,” coach Nemethy said.

Little rain was observed in the Nechako reservoir area over the past week and the upcoming seven day forecast is showing to be relatively dry. According to Rio Tinto Alcan as of June 17, if the current trend in reduction of the reservoir inflow continues, the spillway discharge will be reduced to approximately 300 m3/s on Wednesday. This will result in the flow of the Nechako River at Vanderhoof to be between 400 m3/s and 500 m3/s by next week.

Hats off to responsible pet owners Michele Taylor Caledonia Courier Pet owners were out in numbers between June 13-15, taking advantage of the veterinarians, veterinary technicians and volunteers who were in Fort St. James for the Canadian Animal Assistance Team’s (CAAT) Animal Health Care Clinic at the Fort Forum Arena.

CAAT does a great service for remote communities that don’t have easily accessible veterinarian services. This volunteer led program brings veterinarians and technicians to remote communities and provides spay and neuter services and is run solely on donations.

Teams arrive and set up a temporary clinic right in town - the arena in our town’s case - and set to work performing a variety of veterinary services such as spay and neuters, vaccinations, micro-chipping and education on population management for adults and dog safety for children.

According to the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies, British Columbia comes in second behind Ontario with 40 humane societies and SPCA shelters across the province. According to its statistics 172 humane societies and SPCA shelters in Canada took in over 103,000 cats and over 46,000 dogs in 2013.

Adoption rates were very similar at 47 per cent for cats and 45 per cent for dogs and of those animals taken into shelters in 2013, 38,000 cats and 8,000 dogs were euthanized.

The weekend clinic provided 38 spay or neuters on Saturday, another 45 Sunday and was expecting to see at least another 45 to 50 on Monday.

A pet is a big responsibility, and can be an expensive prospect should something unexpected happen. It was great seeing pet owners being responsible for their animals and taking care of their pet’s health at the clinic. Hats off to the team of volunteers from CAAT and the Fort St. James Humane Society for providing this service to our pet owners - often free of charge – and encouraging people of all ages and from all walks of life to care for their animal’s well-being.

Flow level in the Nechako River at Cheslatta Falls and Vanderhoof will likely remain near the current level for the next few weeks.

Some precipitation is expected over the next several days. The 5 to 7 day forecast is signiďŹ cantly wetter than it was yesterday.

There could be up to 40 mm of rain falling in the reservoir area early next week.

If the current trend in reduction of reservoir inow continues, ow in the Nechako River will be reduced in the last week of June.

Please note that the ow from Nautley River from the Water Survey of Canada gauge (shown above) is not accurate due to back pressure from the high water level in the Nechako River.

The Fraser Lake Elementary-Secondary School is now accepting proposals for its concession and school meal program.

The successful applicant must be able to work closely with the school meal coordinator in planning and delivering meals. The proposal must include a sample one-month original menu that would meet 1/3 of a student’s daily requirements according to the Canada Food Guide. The program will start the first full week of school (Sept. 8, 2015) and continue each day that school is in session. Please base your package on an average of 70 meals per day. In addition to the meal program, the successful applicant will be responsible for providing the food and beverages for sale to students and staff. The proposal must include a list of foods, beverages and snack items for daily consumption and their fixed price (must comply with Healthy School guidelines).

The concession will start the first full day of school (Sept.

8, 2015) and continue each day that school is in session.

Proposals must be delivered to the school by 12:00 noon on, Friday, June 26, 2015. The lowest package price may not necessarily be accepted. This proposal may be extended, under the same terms and conditions, by mutual agreement for more than one year.

YMCA celebrates Healthy Kids Day On Sunday, June 7 the YMCA in Vanderhoof joined over 1,000 communities across Canada in celebration of Healthy Kids Day. This national day is dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of kids.

To mark the inaugural event in Vanderhoof, organizers decided to host a family-friendly picnic in Ferland Park and invited the community to come out and celebrate the day and engaged in healthy activities.

“Go outside, spend time together, laugh, run around, eat your fruit and veggies, soak up a bit of sunshine, smile, get a bit crafty now and then… really it’s the basics to healthy living, a lot easier than some may think and good not only for the kids, but for everyone. I am thrilled to see so many families out enjoying the day together,” Kristin Webster, YMCA Recreation Coordinator and event organizer said.

The staff and volunteers at the YMCA filled Ferland Park with bubbles, bouncy castles, arts and crafts, face painting, healthy snacks, prizes and a good ol’fashioned watermelon eating contest.

Big congrats to our winners Kassittie Kennedy and Dawson Knackstedt who ate 11 slices of watermelon in two minutes!!

The YMCA would like to thank all of their volunteers and the families that came out to join us on Sunday as well as the District of Vanderhoof for their support as well as the Vanderhoof and District Co-op and Independent Grocer for the donation of all of the fruit kebobs and watermelons for the event.
