PEDAL POWER

Find your favourite course

The Fraser Valley is home to some first-class riding trails. Whether you’re a beginner, leisurely peddler, or an experienced mountain biker, there is something for everyone. Sumas Mountain, located only 15 minutes from downtown Abbotsford, is an ideal destination for a full spectrum of trail options. The mountain offers a wide range of adrenalin-inducing downhill descents. For those looking for something flatter, a gentle – but long – ride along the Fraser River in the Matsqui Trail Regional Park might just be your speed. The trail fol-

lows a well-maintained dike with views of the river and farmland. The nearly 14 km stretch is part of the Trans Canada Trail. Abbotsford’s scenic country roads also provide excellent routes for short- and long-distance riders to get out on the road. Downes Bowl is also a great option. It’s a beginners’ trail in the heart of Abbotsford, near the AgRec Centre on 32470 Haida Dr., and provides a wide path with moderately steep sections and several bridges. Nearby at Abbotsford Exhibition Park is a world-class outdoor BMX track.

PAMPER YOURSELF

Relax. Unwind. Breathe. Stop by one of Abbotsford’s spas and indulge in some TLC. Try out one, two or several services to melt away your cares and distractions. Get pampered in a luxurious relaxation lounge and private treatment room. Most spas offer services for men and women, including

massage therapy, hair removal, pedicures, makeup application and microdermabrasion.

A massage and a body treatment is a good combination or a massage and a facial.

Spas typically specialize in a number of treatments, including deep tissue massages, facials, hair removal, manicures and pedicures. Be sure to ask about special packages.

To get the most out of your treatment, make sure you prepare for your spa visit.

You can also combine services.

Arrive early at the spa so you are not rushed. You will also have time to enjoy the sauna or steam before your treatment. When the treatment is over, don’t rush off. Instead, take time to slowly reintegrate and make the most of your experience.

Drink plenty of water before and after services to maximize the benefits of your spa treatments.

REACHING FOR CULTURE Immerse yourself in arts and culture at The Reach Gallery Museum. Located at 32388 Veterans Way, the museum is a centre of cultural innovation in the Fraser Valley where residents and visitors can discover local history while engaging in new and creative energy. A unique blend of celebrating the past with a celebration of the creative future, it’s a must see for any visitor to Abbotsford. Jay Hanscom’s works on Milkshakes and Gasoline will be on display from May 21 to Sept. 6. Hansom’s newest body of work is full of contradictions as he revisits childhood memories though a contemporary blend of paintings, drawings and bold textural elements. In The Conversation – on display until Sept. 6 – Ontario artist David Newkirk pays homage to his artistic influences including Pablo Picasso, Diego Velázquez, and Willem de Kooning in a series of large-scale abstract

paintings. In Port Mann, Kelowna artist Jane Everett presents audiences with large-scale drawings of the Port Mann Bridge, capturing the moment when construction of the new bridge is underway but the old bridge still exists. The works will be on display until Aug. 2. In the fall, the gallery will host the 2015 Fraser Valley Biennale from Sept. 25 to Oct. 4. The exhibition will feature work from local artists. The Reach Gallery Museum Abbotsford is both a centre for community use and an inspirational artist destination. Its outstanding design will draw people together to experience the past, interact with the present and dream of the future. For detailed information about upcoming exhibits and more, visit thereach.ca

ABBOTSFORD’S GO-TO GUIDE 2015 / THE NEWS

It starts with Scouts.

HOT SHOWS AT THE COOL AC Experience the excitement Abbotsford Centre is the venue to check out for popular concerts and events. Carrie Underwood, John Mellencamp, Kiss, Maroon Five, Train, and Reba McEntire have all graced the AC stage as well as Elmo and performers of Cirque du Soleil. There were four sold-out shows last year, while TobyMac broke an attendance record with more than 7,000 fans. The fastest sellout was Florida Georgia Line, with tickets gone in about

eight minutes. This year, the centre has already welcomed back WWE Live and Harlem Globetrotters, and Chris Tomlin played to a sold-out show in April. Coming up, Emerson Drive and Aaron Pritchett will be headlining the Canada Day Kickoff Concert on June 30 at 6 p.m. and the World Baton Twirling Federation will be holding both its 2015 International Cup and Grand Prix at the AC in August.

Although the AC can seat 8,500 people, the venue can also host more intimate, smaller concerts or theatrical events with 2,000 people in attendance. With a full-service catering kitchen and staff, the centre can also be reserved for galas, conferences, conventions, and parties. Located at 33800 King Rd., near the University of the Fraser Valley, the AC is also home to local leagues, including the Abbotsford Minor Hock-

ey Association, Abbotsford Female Hockey Association, and the Abbotsford Centre Hockey League, an adult recreational league. It’s a great venue with lots of parking, plenty of bathrooms, quick concession lineups and the facility is easy to navigate with young children. Tickets are affordable and the seat selection makes it up close and personal so that no seat is a bad seat.
