Chamber pays tribute to Black Press founder Greater Victoria entrepreneurs, dignitaries and others filled the ballroom at the Westin Bear Mountain Golf Resort and Spa last week to enjoy a wonderful dinner, hear an award-winning media entrepreneur tell his story, and round off the night with an intimate performance by tenor Ken Lavigne.

Dinner with David Black, a May 19 fundraiser for the West Shore Chamber of Commerce co-hosted by the Goldstream News Gazette, saw the Black Press founder offer his take on the media business and the success his company has seen

since he bought his first newspaper, the Williams Lake Tribune, nearly 40 years ago.

Black, whose focus has shifted of late from media, also captivated the crowd with an update on his plan to build an oil refinery on the Northern B.C. coast, as a way of preventing tankers from transporting diluted bitumen from the Alberta oil sands through coastal B.C. waters.

Lavigne, accompanied by a talented trio of musicians, followed up the guest speaker with a punchy, wide-ranging set that prompted the audience to give him a pair of standing ovations.

For general manager David King, Galaxy’s inventory of 620-plus used vehicles – worth upwards of $10 million – allows it to match clients with their desired vehicle in a way similar to new car dealerships.

“We’re like a new car dealer that doesn’t sell new cars,” he explains.

While Galaxy happily accepts trade-ins, this is not a company in the business of refurbishing tired, older vehicles.

With few exceptions, its general rule is to avoid selling vehicles older than 10 years, or those with more than 175,000 kilometres.

It also spends approximately $750 per car in refurbishing costs, which includes a 155-point pre-sale inspection, far more intensive than the industry average of 42 points, King says.

“Each dealership operates as if they have 600 cars, and at the end of the day, they’re all Galaxy cars,” he says. “What sets us apart is the ability to marry the pre-approval of a client with a vehicle.”

And that speaks to the other key driver of the company’s business, and further boosting its many referrals and return customers.

A major underpinning for the company, like most car dealers, is its long-standing ability to arrange financing for its diverse customer base, from those with credit or income challenges to those with solid credit history.

Building even further on that long-standing business relationship are Galaxy’s skilled mechanics, technicians and service advisors who work together to ensure customers can service their vehicle where they bought it, enjoying their new wheels for years to come.
