British health and household products manufacturer Reckitt Benckiser Inc. has bought up more than 8,000 hectares of farmland from Prince George south to Quesnel, planting the land with trees and vowing to keep the forest

on the land for 100 years or more.

Local governments are concerned that long-time farming and ranching land is being lost, and farming communities will be weakened as a result. Letnick said previously that a 2011 requirement for the Agricultural Land Commission to ap-

prove covenants for long-term reforestation of farmland would be required before such lands could be used as carbon offsets for the European carbon market.

LANDFILL BAN ON RECYCLABLES

CENTRAL CARIBOO LANDFILL TRANSFER STATION BYLAW NO. 4950 Residential garbage from the City of Williams Lake is taken to the Central Cariboo Transfer Station, and then hauled to the Cariboo Regional District's (CRD) landfill located at the Gibraltar Mine site.

The CRD is advising residents that starting July 4, 2015, a landfill ban on recyclables will come into effect. Recyclables generated in the home can be categorized into “Curbside Recyclables” and “Drop-off Recyclables”. Neither of these categories of recyclables can be put into curbside garbage bins.

Curbside Recyclables: Packaging and printed paper materials can be disposed of in curbside recycling bins, glass, Styrofoam or plastic bags do not belong in recycling bins – these items can be recycled at the Central Cariboo Transfer Station recycling depot on Frizzi Road.

Police busy The weekend of May 22-24 saw Williams Lake RCMP attend several disturbances, an impaired driving, an assault and two domestic incidents.

According to Staff Sgt. Del Byron, police arrested a prolific offender Friday after a victim complained that he was assaulted in his home by a suspect who was refusing to leave.

The suspect was arrested, charged with assault and released on a Promise to Appear.

Police were also called to two domestic incidents over the weekend, one on Fri-

day night and another Sunday evening.

One person was charged with assault in the first complaint while the other matter is still under investigation.

On Sunday, May 24 at about 2:51 a.m.

RCMP stopped and arrested a male driver after he allegedly showed signs of impairment and refused to provide a breath sample.

Byron said officers had observed the driver crossing the centre line on Highway 97 headed north in the southbound lane.

Downtown Williams Lake was bursting with activity Sunday morning when the Lakers Car Club hosted its 21st Annual Show and Shine — part of the club’s Spring Round Up, which began Saturday and finished up Sunday with the show.

Unfinished home saved from being destroyed by fire Monica Lamb-Yorski Staff Writer Quick actions by the owners of an unfinished home on Jacobson Road saved it from being destroyed by fire Monday, said Big Lake Volunteer Fire Chief Joel Bruneski.

“We were called in at 6:06 p.m. and by the time we arrived the homeowners had managed to knock the fire down,” Bruneski said Tuesday. “They used at least seven portable

fire extinguishers that they grabbed from surrounding houses and they managed to pull the burning material away from the building.”

Firefighters responded with the department rescue and engine, accessing a “rough” lane to go directly into the site.

The department’s tender stood back in case it was needed, but ended up turning around, Bruneski said.

rived, the fire was “pretty much out,” so firefighters helped tear the fire apart, assess hot spots with a heat gun, and mop up.

“We also waited for the RCMP to arrive and aided them with their investigation,” Bruneski said, noting the cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

Bruneski said there was very little damage to the house, noting there was a small lake nearby so there were no water issues.

Letnick looking at options for farmland Continued From Page A1 But a Reckitt Benckiser spokesperson confirmed the company isn’t attempting to claim or trade carbon offsets, so it won’t be seeking a covenant from the ALC. That leaves Letnick looking for another

way to stop the loss of farmland.

“What I’ve been advised is that while they’re not claiming for offsets, they’re using it in their publicity to show that they are doing something that’s environmentally good to offset the negatives that they have back at home,” Letnick said in an interview Monday.

The company’s stated plan to keep the farmland in forest “flies in the face of the [Agricultural Land Commission] Act and the intent of the act, and we will need to look at our options,” Letnick added.

According to Reckitt Benckiser’s website (www.rb.com/our-responsibility/trees), the

company’s B.C. planting project is part of a program to make its global operations carbon neutral for the period 2006-2017.

More than seven million trees have been planted and the goal is 10 million trees by next year.

“RB does not intend on registering any covenant on

Accessing the waterfront at Dugan Lake has become much easier thanks to the development of a new trail at the popular recreation site.

“The accessible trail head starts at the dock with really great signage and follows along the lake below all the camp sites,” said Cariboo Regional District director Joan Sorley. “When we officially opened the trail Friday, the park facilitator told us many people are coming out just to walk the trail.”

The trail was built in partnership between the Williams Lake Indian Band, the CRD, Northern Development Initiative Trust (NDIT), Cariboo Chilcotin Beetle Action Coalition (CCBAC) and the provincial government through the BC Community Recreation Program.

Approximately one kilometre long and featuring a packed, crushed gravel surface, the trail’s accessibility is being appreciated.

Willie Sellars said they brought a group of Elders out to walk along the trail and they really appreciated the trail as well.

Dugan Lake is situated among rolling hills in a spruce-lodgepole pine forest, offers a BC Forest Service campsite and is a great spot for viewing wildlife.

An accessible dock on the low mobility trail also allows visitors to cast a line into this popular fishing lake.

The trail has a gentle grade with one steeper section. An accessible outhouse, accessible

dock, three benches and a kiosk at the trailhead with information about the trail are also available for users’ convenience.

Sellars also described the trail as a perfect example of partnerships.

“Through these relationships we have delivered something that will help bolster the already growing trail network and contributes to more trails in the local area,” Sellars said. “Providing another tourism option will also further diversify our economy and give people more of a reason to visit our area,

take in the views and experience the Cariboo.”

In 2006, the CRD board passed a resolution to work toward developing the CaribooChilcotin as a world leader in accessible outdoor recreation and tap into niche tourism markets for persons of low mobility.

Other wheelchair accessible sites within the CRD include Tatlayoko, Kersley, Cottonwood Historic Site, 108 Mile/ Sepa Lakes, Lac La Hache, Horsefly Salmon Spawning Trails, Gavin Lakeshore Trail,

and most recently the 99 Mile Accessible Trail which was officially opened last fall. There are currently seven other accessible wilderness trails being developed by the CRD, some of which were funded through the Community Recreation Program.

City hires new director of development SHOE LUST Monica Lamb-Yorski Staff Writer The city has hired a new director of development services who will cover some of the work previously done by manager of operations Geoff Goodall.

“As director of development services, I am in charge of planning, building and development engineering,” Leah Hartley said.

Into her third week on the job, Hartley described the city as an excellent organization and Williams Lake as a very friendly community.

“I’ve received a nice

welcome so far from everyone,” she said, adding her family loves outdoor recreation and will enjoy the four seasons in the Cariboo.

Hartley has worked in B.C. as a planner since the 1980s.

Her resume includes positions with the City of Vancouver, a private firm, the Okanagan Regional District and most recently for Island Trust at Saltspring Island.

“Most of my roles have been in senior planning, management planning and meetings of elected officials,” Hartley said of her previous postings.

Young people stepping up to the task

he newly elected Alberta government is unique in a number of ways.

It will have a 12-member cabinet, compared to the Conservative’s 20. Half the ministers will be women. In fact, almost half the NDP caucus are women.

It is also a young government, the average being 40, down from 53. Three newbies are in their 20s. One turned 20 on election day.

B.C. has 20 ministers. I don’t know their average age but eight are women.

When a large number of young people were elected from Quebec in the last federal election, critics doubted they’d be up to the job.

French By all accounts Connection they are at least Diana French as effective as the older MPs. It will be interesting to see how this young/new Alberta government makes out. *** Speaking of young people, you often hear complaints that they don’t get involved in community affairs.

They don’t volunteer to sit on the boards of non-profit organizations and there are precious few in local politics. Maybe we’re looking in the wrong places. This last weekend a passel of younger persons participated in the Capital One Race for Kids raising money for the Boys and Girls Club. It was a challenging event. In teams of four, the participants had to follow clues to find the 10 checkpoints, then perform a task at each one.

The tasks included building a tower from raw spaghetti and marshmallows, picking up a balloon with the Jaws of Life, and hitting a target with a fire hose while dressed in fireman’s gear. The race was timed of course at one point the contestants had to run up Johnson Street.

Three of my granddaughters participated.

They thoroughly enjoyed it. The event raised a goodly amount of money all of which stays with the local Boys and Girls Club.

Hats off to the organizers, it must have taken a humungous amount of time and effort to get this show “on the road.”

How to deal with debates The Conservative Party has said it will not take part in the TV debates organized by a consortium of television stations, thus finally breaking apart the monopoly on TV debates that has been held by the Canadian televison networks for the past 45 years.

That’s a good thing. But manipulation by the Conservatives as to which debates their leader, Prime Minister Stephen Harper, will appear in is not a good thing.

While Harper is already committed to appear in several debates, there is far too much manipulation involved in this whole exercise.

This is coming from a government that has taken manipulation from the prime minister’s office to a new level.

political parties and the media are not the ones to organize how political dialogue takes place during an election. Nowhere is this more true than in the organizing of debates where party leaders, who wield an inordinate amount of power under our system, discuss issues with each other.

It would be better if Elections Canada took over administration of debates, based on guidelines that were agreed to by all parties. While the points of agreement would likely be minimal, that is actually an advantage. A debate should not be so proscribed that it loses spontaneity or turns potential voters off. The advantage in having it administered by the national election agency is that no one involved in organizing it would have a political or advertiser-driven agenda.

Debates between political party leaders are an important part of democracy, and are very important milestones during an election campaign. The federal debates need to be lively, catch significant voter attention and be scrupulously fair to all.

ou may not be familiar with the term ‘social enterprise,’ but you’ve probably supported one at some point in time. Social enterprises are businesses that are committed to making a difference in people’s lives and in finding innovative ways to help solve social, cultural, economic and environmental challenges.

This month B.C. celebrated Social Enterprise Month. Social enterprises throughout B.C. are making a difference in our communities and neighbourhoods each and every day.

Social enterprise ideas, unlike conventional business ideas, typically result from a desire to solve a social need; similar to how many nonMLA profit and charity Musings organizations find Coralee Oakes their beginning.

They operate like a business, producing goods and services for sale and earning revenue. They may range from farmers markets to jobs for those with disabilities, to thrift stores, to businesses that provide skills training or even affordable housing.

Social enterprises also address environmental issues, reduce poverty, provide services and products to underserved communities, and develop social and cultural capital – stimulating economic activity and revitalization.

In Cariboo North, the Xats’ull Heritage Village near Williams Lake is an example of a social enterprise. It provides Aboriginal themed tours where guests can overnight in pit houses and teepees, take an Aboriginal storytelling workshop or experience in an authentic sweat lodge. Xats’ull Heritage Village is creating jobs and economic opportunities for the Xats’ull First Nation while providing visitors an opportunity to experience First Nations culture first hand.

Changes ahead at the Burger Shed Editor: Everything comes to an end. So is with me and the Burger Shed.

Ten-and-a-half years I have served you burgers, hot dogs, chicken burgers and lots of other stuff and all with my crazy jokes.

But I have sold the Burger Shed and the trailer to Elena Borland and her husband Ron. They will run the business like I have and they will be assisted by my old time great hard working staff Marilyn and the young great guy Hunter.

They both are great personalities

To all my help in the past years very many thanks.

I will train Bob for the next four weeks to be like me on the grill, so you can be sure to get a great local burger just like how I make them.

The Williams Lake march was held in conjunction with other March Against Monsanto rallies held on six continents and in more than 450 cities, with hundreds of thousands of individuals taking part.

While the issues of the world can often seem overwhelming and can therefore cause a person to turn a blind eye, it’s important to remember that issues such as deforestation, pollution, poverty, inequality, and even cancer are linked to common problems and can be stopped by taking a stand against them.

We can all make a positive difference: choose local and organic foods, avoid packaged foods that don’t bear a Certified Organic or

Non-GMO Project Verified symbol, write letters to your member of Parliament and to Health Canada, sign online petitions, and help out causes such as March Against Monsanto.

Plans are underway for local events later this year, but volunteers will be needed to make things happen.

Former Tribune staffer Africa-bound Monica Lamb-Yorski Staff Writer Carleton University journalism graduate and former Tribune summer student Tara Sprickerhoff is off to Africa for an internship with an international organization committed to fighting poverty and food insecurity.

Beginning in June, she will spend four months working with Farm Radio International at its local office in Accra, Ghana.

“I’m excited to get started,” she said while home for a visit in Williams Lake.

“I don’t know what I will do afterwards, but when I applied to Carleton I knew the school offered a variety of internships and thought it would be a great opportunity.”

The 23-year-old grew up in the lakecity and graduated from Columneetza secondary school in 2011.

“I will be the only non-African working at the local office in Accra,” Sprickerhoff said.

“Farm Radio’s head office in Ottawa will prepare information packages and scripts with the latest research on farming methods for me to

Other major issues Sprickerhoff will cover in her broadcasts will be to raise awareness about the nutritional benefit of growing yams and the importance of gender equality.

Farm Radio doesn’t have its own radio stations, but works with more than 500 radio broadcasters in 38 African countries.

“Radio is very

popular in Africa,” Sprickerhoff said. “It costs $15 or less for a radio that can go anywhere.

“There are even radio listening circles in Africa.”

During her third year at Carleton Sprickerhoff studied a semester-long radio course.

Part of the course involved a two-week internship at CFRA in Ottawa and one of the highlights was covering Remembrance Day. “I love radio because there is so

much power in having someone tell their own story,” she explained. “You can hear their emotions.”

Besides, she loves playing with sound, she smiled.

“Radio is always in the present tense and punchier. You write the way you say it.”

In fourth year the journalism students broadcasted a show every Wednesday afternoon for the university’s radio station.

For the show Sprickerhoff prepared five-minute mini documentaries, voicers that were one minute 30 seconds, taped talks which are clips of people talking, and some question and answer pieces.

“We called the show Mid-Week because it was on Wednesday.”

Thinking back to when she first thought about what she wanted to do when she grew up, Sprickerhoff recalled telling her Grade 7 teacher she wanted to be a journalist.

“He said I should be a doctor. I’d flip flop thinking I’d be an actor or a teacher but I always came back to journalism.”

She grew up listening to CBC radio in her home and in Grade 4 her teacher Mr. Taylor at Nesika elementary did current events every single day.

“We’d listen to the top news story and then he’d ask who, what, where, when and why.”

Sprickerhoff said she plans to keep a blog while she’s there.

Farmers Market growing strong Monica Lamb-Yorski Staff Writer Two and half years ago Lindae Hilton moved to Williams Lake from Vancouver to escape the rat race and now divides her time between part-time work and managing the Friday Farmers Market at Boitanio Park.

“I had been toying with the idea of leaving Vancouver, but didn’t know where I would move to,” Hilton said.

Then in 2010, during the Olympics in Vancouver, she visited the Cariboo Chilcotin Coast display and was intrigued to check out Williams Lake.

“I spoke with staff at the display and that was my impetus to drive up that Easter to look at Williams Lake for myself,” Hilton said.

She also wanted to ensure the basic amenities were available and discovered they were.

“For those reasons I decided to come here, plus it’s only a six-hour drive from Vancouver,” Hilton said.

Her part-time job sees her at the Academy of Learning Tuesday and Thursday evenings helping students with computer training and setting them up for exams.

“I like the job because it keeps me cur-

rent with computer software,” she smiled.

As for the Farmers Market, it’s one of those stories about how things unfold.

Within the first few months of moving to town she met her sweetheart.

He’d been here for 25 years already and his wife had recently died.

“His first profession was a farmer back in Saskatchewan,” Hilton explained. “Some time last year I decided I would try growing herbs — parsley, mint, cilantro — those types of things.”

A few weeks later she started selling them at the Farmers Market alongside her sweetheart’s produce.

Then in October she attended the market’s AGM. At the meeting Vonny Johnston said she didn’t want to be the manager any longer, so when the group met again in March, Hilton put her name forward.

“It’s physically demanding to set out the signs, traffic cones, sound system, tent and tables but I’m used to that,” Hilton said. “I worked in the film industry before.”

As she looks forward to the season, Hilton is hoping to attract more vendors and customers.

On opening day two weeks ago there were 20 vendors, with one signing up at noon.

The cost for a spot is $10 each time, in addition to the $10 annual membership fee.

Hilton would like to invite artisans to set up in the park to promote their talent.

“They wouldn’t have to pay,” she said of the opportunity. “I envision an artist sitting on a chair with an easel painting, doing portraits or caricature, something like that.”

After seeing some of the student work at Art Walk last year, she’s hoping some

students might be interested to participate.

In order to play CDs or have live performances, the market will need to pay about $400 for a licence to Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN), so Hilton has set up a donation jar in the park to help make this happen.

The Studio Theatre’s production of Proof will be first up for the Central Interior Zone Drama Festival taking place at the Studio Theatre this weekend.

Proof by David Auburn will be on stage Friday, May 29 starting at 8 p.m. sharp with doors opening at 7:30 p.m.

The play concerns Catherine, the daughter of Robert, a recently deceased mathematical genius in his fifties and professor at the University of Chicago, and her struggle with mathematical genius and mental illness.

Catherine had cared for her father through a lengthy mental illness. Upon Robert’s death, his ex-graduate student Hal discovers a paradigm-shifting proof about prime numbers in Robert’s office. The title refers both to that proof and to the play’s central question: Can Catherine prove the proof’s authorship?

Intergenerational project wraps fourth year Gaeil Farrar Staff Writer Cataline elementary students and their buddies at the Seniors Village wrapped up their fourth annual intergenerational project last week with farewell speeches, and refreshments.

As part of the intergenerational project students in grades 4 to 7 take their morning classes at the Seniors Village for four weeks in the fall and three weeks in the spring.

Students learn their regular curriculum, volunteer for a variety of services and spend one-on-one time with a senior buddy.

Sometimes seniors also come into their classroom to share a song, poem, card trick or give a mini-lesson on topics such as magnetism or a history lesson.

The crib tournament the students played in this term was yet to wrap up as the seniors had beaten all but one of the students in the games.

In the afternoon the students head back to their regular classrooms at Cataline where they write in their journals what they have learned about and from, their senior buddies. Both sides seem to enjoy the interaction.

Last year Mary James says she was able to play games with the students but this year her eyesight has deteriorated to the point where she is legally blind so she very much appreciates the students’ help to play card games.

“It’s a wonderful program,” James says. “I can’t see. I couldn’t play games without the students.

They add and subtract for me.”

Jessie Voth says she has had four buddies over the years and loves them all.

“I think it’s a wonderful program for the children and for us,” Voth says. “When they are young and active it is good for the kids to see the other end of life which is not so bad and they keep us young.

They put life into the building.”

In speaking to the students Voth offered a word of advice: “Save your money now and prepare for old age.”

Senior Verna Dennis, who has two buddies this year, says: “I’ve had such a happy time hanging out with the students, sharing with them and learning about all their problems. I really, really enjoy it.”

Dennis’s buddy Dillon Alberts, Grade 6 says: “We talk and hang out and have a good time” Dillon says they also garden together. “We get lots of education from Verna and stories about her past and have a really good time.”

Dennis’s other buddy, Jerica Parker, Grade 5 adds: “We play lots of card games, one called

Cataline elementary school is hosting its annual Streets of Learning Thursday, May 28 starting at 4:30 p.m. The halls and gymnasium will be filled with student work and there will be a silent auction of some the children’s pieces.

Refreshments and dinner will be available at the Outdoor Café Patio.

Over the years, senior Jean Yablonski says she has had six student buddies and has loved every one of them.

Yablonski says her first buddy recently came back to visit her.

“Children are our most valuable asset and it has been a pleasure to have the program here,” Yablonski says.

Yablonski’s buddy Reese Rivet, Grade 6, adds: “I think it is a lot of fun, really cool.”

In praising his senior buddy Isaac Lauren, Grade 6, says: “You are like a grandma to me now. I will be coming back to visit for sure ... One more thing Donna, I love your stories.”

Lauren’s buddy, Donna Schoonover, was thrilled with his comments.

“I am a grandmother for the first time,” Donna says. “I am a great aunt and soon to be a greatgreat aunt but I’ve never been a

Teacher Stephen Dickens says the students may sound redundant in their praise and thank-yous but in marking their journals over the years he is amazed how much the

students learn from their visits with their senior buddies.

“The students truly have grown because of their visits with you.

There is lots more going on in their heads than you may realize.”

Firefighters’ open house The Williams Lake Fire Department open house takes place Sunday, May 31 at the fire hall on Hodgson Road from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. with a barbecue, children’s activities and the firefighters’ challenge.

The 3064 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps Rocky Mountain Rangers will hold their 15th Annual Ceremonial Review Sunday, May 31 starting at 1 p.m. on the grounds of the Williams Lake Regional Airport.

This is the culmination of the cadet training year where local army cadets showcase their skills to the public, says training officer Lieutenant William Sheridan.

The reviewing officers will review the cadets and help distribute honours, awards and trophies to hard working cadets for the 2014/15 training year.

Following the inspection cadets will demonstrate such skills as radio communications, physical fitness training, marksmanship, and music.

Major Lewis started out as a cadet in 1972 and became an army officer in 1977. He has been a strong advocate for the Canadian Cadet program for four decades and this fall he will be awarded the Order of Military Merit from His Excellency David Johnston Governor General of Canada. Major Lewis is also Aide de Comp to Her Worship Judith Guichon Lieutenant Governor of B.C. O’Neil is a supporter of the cadet movement who has volunteered in the community with various organizations and will present the Legion Medal of Honour to a deserving cadet.

The event is open to the general public free of charge but due to the venue at the airport spectators will need to provide their own seating.

Compost bins recharged Chris Hornby Special to Tribune/Advisor We are now in full swing at the Potato House. Things are just buzzing.

Our new co-ordinator is Oliver Berger, who spent the winter snow-boarding 30 ski hills in Alberta and making films about his boarding experiences.

All the new compost boxes have been built and are filled with new soil and leaves in order to start accepting your compost waste.

The Potato House is the only heritage house composting depot in B.C. and also has a community garden.

We have 13 growers planting gardens on the site this spring.

While many of them have planted a garden at the Potato House for four years, there are also several first-time gardeners this year.

We try to purchase

and plant organic seeds.

Some items planted include New Foundland beans, chard, beets, squash, bok choy, onions and local heritage potatoes.

There are also Prince Edward Island sunflowers for the birds to feed on in winter.

Our famous rhubarb is now being harvested.

The apple trees and lilacs are in bloom making for some great photographs.

And the rose bush has leaves.

The Potato House is a friendly, busy place as people drive by to deposit their compost which helps to reduce waste going into our landfill and helps to keep our planet green.

We have official compost buckets available at the Potato House for $10.

They are handy for business lunch rooms in the downtown area, daycare centres, pre-

schools, and people living in apartments and mobile home parks who would like to get involved in composting and help to make more valuable soil for the garden.

Our recent hot dog/ veggie dog sale was a great success thanks to Carol Thiessen, Angel Moore, and all of our customers, plus SaveOn employees.

Pop by anytime, chat with the knowledgeable gardeners, dump your compost, enjoy seeing our garden grow and hear the bees hum. It is relaxing.

Potato House memberships are $10 a year for a senior or students and $20 a year for an individual, $30 for a family and $100 for a corporation.

The 44th BC Forest Service Trap Shoot was held at Alexis Creek’s Chilcotin Rod and Gun Club Range on Saturday, May 23 under an ever changing spring sky.

It was another great turnout with 70 shooters comprised of 14 five-person shotgun trap and skeet teams, and individual .22 calibre rifle shooters.

Once again, Quesnel Quality was the highest scoring trap and skeet team and awarded the Jack Lynn Memorial Trophy.

The Quesnel Quality team were Terry Street, Gord Wall, Ted Traer, Andres Street, and Adam Veleyj, who scored 107 out of a possible 125 points.

George Ostoforoff was the Top Gun, missing only once out of 25 attempts. Jenna Brink and Yvette Sabo tied for the female Top Gun, both with 17 out of 25.

nie Oakley trap shoot line, winning the Kevin Frittenburg Memorial Trophy.

Jeff Austin triumphed on the second Annie Oakley line.

The .22 calibre rifle shooting winners, listed first to third, were; Connie Haley, Sammy Carlson, and Patty Murphy for the women and, Bailey Cail, Seamus Murphy and Darby Cail for the youth.

The Money Shots from Alexis Creek prevailed in a hard fought battle for the lowest-score trophy, and Mark Hamm was the 179th fastest gun.

Everyone enjoyed the fun, good food and friendship.

First place went to I-B-Pro-Fun!’s team of Kelsey Callander, Christy Smith, Lisa Hutchinson and Shannon Thom, who completed the race course in one hour and 30 minutes.

Second place was I Hurt So Good’s Carol Anne Dikur, Colleen Lord, Jhed Gerrior and Ryan Lord.

Third went to the Tenacious Warriors’ Amelia Chauvette, Stacy Wong, Mark Gracia and Mason Wong.

More than $20,000 was raised for the first annual Williams Lake and District Boys and Girls Club Capital One Race for Kids, held Saturday.

The event saw 13 teams of four traversing the city by foot to several checkpoints to complete a number of zany challenges in a race to the finish line.

Challenges included firing a charged fire hose at a target, painting a team portrait, shooting pool while wearing drunk goggles, riding a tricycle around a market course, shooting a Nerf gun at a target while handcuffed, digging for pieces then completing a puzzle, among several others.

WLDBGC operations co-ordinator Stefanie Hendrickson said they couldn’t be more pleased with the response from the community, following the race.

“It was awesome,” she said. “We’re getting fantastic feedback. I was asking teams what their favourite checkpoints and least favourite

Falcons become double bronze medalists Greg Sabatino Staff Writer The Lake City Falcons became bronze medalists for the second time this year when they competed at the B.C. High School Girls Rugby Championships in North Vancouver last weekend.

In April, the team brought home bronze from the seven-a-side provincials. Now, they can add a 15-aside third-place result to their resumes, capping off one of the most successful seasons in lakecity high school rugby history.

The Falcons doubled Shawnigan Lake, 10-5, in the bronze medal match at the championships. Head coach Morley Wilson said Grade 12s Tasha Johnson and Anna Bracewell provided leadership allowing them to pull off the victory, while Grade 11s Emma Pfleiderer, Laura Pfleiderer, Carleigh Walters and Skye Forcier all played tremendously throughout the weekend.

Grade 10s Gina Davis at fullback and Carrie Lange at outside centre and prop added much needed depth, he said, with Grade 9 Emma Feldinger providing an impressive showing.

Lake City, who entered the tournament as the No. 3 ‘AA’ seed in the province, laid a 51-0 punishing on Houston (No. 6), to open the championships.

“We dominated in both possession and territory control throughout the game,” Wilson said, noting Feldinger, Johnson, Bracewell (2), Emma, Laura (2), Madison Blusson and Vittoria Durfeld scored tries in the contest.

Next up was a semifinal rematch with Abbotsford from April’s seven-a-side provincials.

“This is the same team that beat

us 7-5 last month at sevens,” Wilson said. “Abbotsford started out strong with a lot of pressure on our defence, but at the 10-minutemark Tasha ripped a ball out of an opponent’s hands and sprinted 90 metres to score between the pipes.”

Both teams would trade tries throughout the match, before Abbotsford squeaked out a 17-12 win with just a few minutes remaining.

“It was one of the most physical games of the entire tournament,” Wilson said. “The last 15 minutes [we] applied most of the pressure but could not score.”

In the bronze-medal game Laura, the team’s scrum half, opened

the scoring for Lake City, before setting up her sister, Emma, for a try. Shawnigan added a try in the second half, but the Falcons held on for the win.

“Shawnigan Lake has a long history of excellence in the game of rugby,” Wilson said. “As a private school they have players from all over the world.

“There was lots of physical play in the last 15 minutes by both teams.”

Also of note, both Bracewell and Johnson have been named to the B.C. under-19 team and will be representing the province this summer in Saskatchewan.

The Williams Lake Men’s Soccer Association is still accepting registration for its 2015 outdoor season.

The last day to register is June 1. Games run Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings at the Esler Sports Complex.

Wednesday, May 27 Mountview Fun Run

Mountview and Cataline elementary schools are working together to put on a fun run for students today (Wednesday, May 27).

The event will see about 100 students from both schools participate in a three or five kilometre run.

Both routes will take children on Dog Creek Road and then to Gunanoot.

Motorists are asked to slow down and watch for children in the area from 2:15 until 3:30 p.m.

The staff and students have been training for the last six weeks for the event, which was organized for students in response to the cancellation of the KidSport Classic, which attracted many school participants.

Thunder Mountain Speedway opening race day Thunder Mountain Speedway opens with its first race of the season featuring the Wescar Late Model Series.

There will also be bone stocks, pro minis and street stocks competing in a double points weekend. Qualifying begins at 5 p.m. with racing to start at 6 p.m.

It was another successful weekend for the Lakers Car Club in Williams Lake, who hosted its 21st Annual Spring Round Up Show and Shine.

Williams Lake FC claims title at Penticton May Long Classic A team of Williams Lake women marched home with a victory from the 54th Annual Penticton May Long Classic May 16-18.

Sandy Young and Cora Kelly both found the net for Williams Lake FC as they beat the host, Penticton, 2-1 in the tournament final May 18.

Keeper Jeannie Garrard also played a role in the win with a clutch, diving save to help Williams Lake defend the lead in the final.

Prior to that Williams Lake downed the Side Line Caesars, 3-2, with two goals from Katie McMahen, in-

cluding a header, plus another from Young.

Next, Williams Lake beat Coquitlam, 3-0, with Lindsey McCoubrey scoring twice and Young adding another.

In their third game of the weekend, Williams Lake continued its unbeaten streak, knocking off Richmond, 4-1.

Young continued to provide offence for Williams Lake scoring twice, while Leah Watt and Ashley Callander added singles in the win.

Following the final the tournament MVP was awarded to Michelle Thamerus.

He will be dearly missed by his loving wife Judy, his children Jodee (Grant), Ron (Shelley) and Justin (Char), his doting sisters (Denise, Toots and Diane), his 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, as well as his devoted cow dog Sky. Ron was an avid hunter and rancher, and loved sharing a good story with his numerous friends. He had time for everyone and will leave a void in the lives of so many.

Ethel Dolores (Dee) Spencer Briggs Thomas, our spunky mother, grandma, and great-grandma passed away the 20th of May 2015 at her home. She was 87.

The child of Christine (Tissie) and Herbert Spencer, she grew up in Williams Lake, BC. She married Fred Azer Briggs in Williams Lake, and they were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they raised six beautiful children. After our dad passed away, Dee She is survived by her 5 children, Robert (Julia), Luanne (Scott) Savage, Mark (Christine), Kay (Rick) Berry, and Curtis (Cristie) Briggs. 29 grandchildren, 57 great-grandchildren, and two on the way. Dee was preceded by one son, Christopher Fred Briggs, her sister Kathleen, her brother Robert, her husband, Fred, her parents, step-father, Naussau Sutton, and our step-father, Reed.

Gwen Mullett passed away peacefully and was called home to be with her lord, while surrounded by family on May 20, 2015.

Survived by her children Ruth (John) Shaw, Susan (Wayne) Erlandson, and Jack (Lorna) Mullett and families, and sister Betty Pollard.

Predeceased by her husband Jack Mullett Sr., sister Jean MacIver, brother Louis Rogers and infant son Mark Mullett.

Georgie Fairholm It is with much love and great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Georgie Fairholm, at home with her daughters by her side.

Georgie is predeceased by her parents Mervyn and Ruth; brothers Ted and Malcolm; sister Olivia. She is lovingly remembered by her daughters Ruth (Brett) and Rita (Rodney); grandchildren Amy, Aaron, Ashley, Adam, Matthew and Jessica; sister Joyce; brothers Brian and Hewett and their families.

Mom spent her life in BC and Alberta, returning in retirement to the Cowichan Valley to enjoy the company of her friends old and new.

Mom loved people, and her career with the BC Liquor Distribution Branches in Duncan and Williams Lake was a joy that afforded her the opportunity to meet new friends.

Her family would like to thank the medical team ... her friends as she considered them ... Doctors M. Ibrahim, W. Pewarchuk, V. Masuda, S. Allen; the wonderful women on the CDH chemo wing; and the VIHA Home Support staff. We are grateful to have had you in her corner. We wish also to express a heartfelt “Thank you” to those closest to Mom: Joyce, Linda, Dian and Brett. Your friendship enriched our Mom’s life.

Ferguson, Patsy May

July 21, 1928 - May 23, 2015 The family of Patsy is saddened to announce her peaceful passing at Williams Lake Seniors Village.

Mom was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandma. She is survived by sons David (Joanne), Pat (Kathy), granddaughter Alex (Matt), great grandson Cory, granddaughter Krista, and great grandsons Ronin and Koan.

After her children were grown and moved on, Mom started volunteer work and became a member of the Cariboo Memorial Hospital Board, later as a executive, and was elected as president in 1989. She also spent many years bowling, and spent countless hours knitting, crocheting and doing cross stitch work, much of it donated to various causes.

She spent her retirement years traveling with her husband Frederick who passed away in 2008 after 60 years of marriage.

A special thanks to Carol Leckie, a long time friend for Mom and Tuesday lunch buddy. Carol spent countless hours with Mom- thank you!!

Mom always said she didn’t like to see anyone sad so at her request, there will be no service. Donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society.

As Mom always said when we left her home, “Love you, bye for now.”
