Police offers examine the scene of a serious, four-vehicle crash that closed a section of 16 Avenue near 227 Street on Wednesday morning.

Four people were taken to hospital — two in serious condition — after a four-vehicle collision that shut down 16 Avenue on Wednesday morning.

Two people were taken to hospital by Air Ambulance and two others were transported by ground. The injuries sustained are serious but not life-threatening, said Langley RCMP.

By Thursday, two victims had been released from hospital.

Around 9:30 a.m., a small pickup truck travelling eastbound had stopped to make a left turn into a driveway.

Another vehicle stopped behind the pickup truck.

The second vehicle was rear-ended by a dump truck, starting a chain reaction which pushed the small pickup truck into the oncoming lane. Once in the westbound lane, the pickup was struck by an oncoming SUV. The road, which is a major east-west thoroughfare, was closed between 224 and 232 Streets for most of the day as the investigation into the crash was carried out.

Anyone who witnessed the collision and has not yet spoken to police is asked to call Langley RCMP at 604-532-3200.

All three men are from Surrey, known to police and are not residents of the home where the shots were fired.

Two men are 22 years old and one is 29, said police.

“These two men have not been overly co-operative with police,” said Langley RCMP Cpl. Holly Largy.

Police have no suspects and very little information to go on.

Pipeline will mean extra costs for municipalities

The expansion of the Trans Mountain pipeline will mean over $93 million in extra costs for taxpayers in Langley, Surrey, Coquitlam, Abbotsford and Burnaby, according to a report filed with the National Energy Board (NEB) late last month.

The study by Associated Engineering, now posted on the NEB website, was funded by the five municipalities.

Projected over 50 years, the report concludes the added cost of building municipal infrastructure around the new pipeline “exceeds $93,000,000.”

Coquitlam would bear the biggest expense, $28.5 million, followed by Burnaby with $17.6 million, Surrey with $17.1 million, Abbotsford at $17 million and the Township of Langley would have the smallest added expense at $12.8 million.

That reflects the extra cost of installing new and replacement “buried utilities” like water pipes, sanitary and storm sewers as well as roads, ditches and creeks in areas where the pipeline is located.

National Energy Board regulations for working around petroleum pipelines require the communities through which the pipeline passes to follow strict rules when they carry out day-to-day maintenance tasks and construction projects.

That often means “altering methods of design and construction to accommodate the pipeline,” a memo in the report states.

“The communities affected by the existing pipeline have been responsible for the additional costs associated with these activities since original construction, and are concerned with the additional financial strain that may be included with the addition of a second pipeline,” the memo adds.

The report says while Trans Mountain pipeline owner Kinder Morgan has acknowledged there will be disruption during construction of the new pipeline, “there has not yet been acknowledgement of additional costs incurred by each mu-

The report discloses there have been several occasions where Kinder Morgan “has caused delay and cost to the Township” because of the existing pipeline.

It lists three examples; one where Kinder Morgan complained to the NEB about Township paving activities; one where the company reported the Township for failing to get a permit to clean a ditch 180 metres away from the pipeline; and one where it

complained because the Township was replacing a tree damaged by a car accident near the line.

The report says because Kinder Morgan installs its pipe at shallow depths, this “forces municipalities to install their utilities under the pipelines to meet KM vertical clearance requirements, requiring additional effort and cost for trenching, shoring, corrosion protection, site footprint, finishing and dewatering.”

It also means the pipeline might have to be buried deeper, at the expense of the

municipality, when a road next to it needs widening, the report says.

It suggests the added costs to municipal taxpayers could be trimmed through a number of measures, including burying the pipeline deeper and more consultation with municipal engineers.

Township Mayor Jack Froese said the report was raised with Peter Watson, chairman of the National Energy Board, during a Tuesday meeting involving Froese, Watson and senior municipal staff.

Avian flu officially declared to be at an end in B.C.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s (CFIA) declaration that British Columbia is considered free of avian influenza was welcome news to provincial agriculture minister Norm Letnick.

After the federal agency issued an allclear following a 90-day intensive surveillance period, Letnick issued a statement praising the CFIA, industry and local authorities for their quick action.

“I am grateful that the response plan developed by industry and government was

successful in eliminating this outbreak.

This could not have happened without the hard work and dedication of those working tirelessly on the ground. It is because of them B.C. poultry producers are now able to resume normal operations.”

Letnick was also pleased that the United States has signalled it will allow Canadian poultry imports and hoped other trading partners will do the same in the near future.

“This declaration is an important signal to global markets that British Columbia’s

poultry industry is open for business” Letnick said.

He said the ministry is conducting a review for “lessons learned to apply to any future events.”

Since the H5N2 virus was detected at a broiler/breeder farm in Chilliwack and a turkey farm in Abbotsford in early December, more than 245,000 birds were killed with carbon dioxide gas and then composted in a bid to keep the deadly virus from spreading.

There were several outbreaks in the Langley area, resulting in the destruction of 53,000 table egg layers at one farm and 11,800 broilers/breeders at another.

As well, 85 birds at a small non-commercial operation in Aldergrove were destroyed.

The H5N2 bird flu virus was described as a Eurasian-North American hybrid that is especially deadly to birds.

It was the first time this type of avian flu virus has been seen in North America.

“We’re concerned about the costs down the road,” Froese told The Times.

Froese said the hour-long meeting was at the request of Watson.

They mayor said he was pleased to hear Watson say the federal government is preparing a law that would make pipeline operators “absolutely liable” for up to $1 billion in clean-up costs if there is a spill, more if the company is found negligent.

“I think that’s a good thing,” Froese said.

Langley businessman Randy Caine wants to know which Canadian agency told Mexican authorities he was a drug dealer, after he was denied entry to Puerto Vallerta.

A Langley man says he was refused admission to Mexico for being a drug trafficker, despite winning an absolute discharge on that precise allegation in court.

Randy Caine and his wife Maureen were met by Mexican police when they flew to the resort town of Puerto Vallarta in March, planning to stay at the time share they own in a nearby town.

It wasn’t exactly a vacation.

Maureen Caine’s mother had just died and the couple wanted some quiet time away from home.

Caine told The Times they were stopped by a Mexican federal police officer as they exited the jet.

“They were waiting at the bottom of the stairs,” Caine told The Times.

“They had my picture. I never even cleared customs.”

Caine was separated from his wife and taken to an interrogation room where he was told that he’d been flagged as a “security threat.”

When he asked what kind of security threat, he was told it was for being a drug trafficker.

Caine demanded to know who had flagged him.

He said he was told “you need to

been issued and a further search of the internet only found some news articles about Caine’s legal battles over marijuana laws.

Since then, Caine has filed multiple requests with different Canadian government agencies under Freedom Of Information laws to find out exactly who was responsible for making what he described as “false and baseless” allegations to the Mexicans.

He is concerned that other countries may have been given the same incorrect information.

“We’re at a point in our lives [my wife and I] where we would like to travel,” Caine said.

He would also like to expand his chain of Hempyz Gifts and Novelties store into other countries.

One of the agencies, the RCMP, has responded by telling Caine his file is so big, they will need extra time to go through it.

A May 25 letter to Caine from Patrick Fox of the RCMP Access to Information and Privacy Branch said the police force would need more than the statutory 30-day time limit to comply with his request “due to a large volume of records and because meeting the original time limit will unreasonably interfere with operations.”

The Mexican police put Caine back on the jet he arrived on, but his wife was not allowed to join him, even though an empty seat was available.

She was forced to fly back three hours later.

Caine said the experience was especially traumatizing for his wife of 39 years, who was still grieving her loss.

Caine was charged, but not convicted, of drug trafficking in July of 2011 when his legal medical marijuana dispensary in Langley City was raided by the RCMP. The charge was dropped in June of 2013.

Under a plea bargain with the federal prosecutor in the case, Caine pleaded guilty to less serious violations of exceeding the amount of marijuana he was allowed under his Health Canada licence and of storing it improperly, and was granted an absolute discharge on both counts.

Under Canadian law, an absolute discharge is not considered a conviction.

Caine said when he arrived at Vancouver International Airport, he asked a Canada Border Services Agency officer to run a check on his passport.

Langley Board of Education unanimously voted in favour of closing the Lochiel school site and moving the U-Connect program to Simonds Elementary.

The vote was held at a special meeting of the board on Tuesday night.

Trustee Megan Dykman abstained from voting because she has a child attending U-Connect.

The decision means that as of July 1, the south Langley school site will officially close down as an operating facility.

As of Sept. 1, students and teachers in the U-Connect program will attend Simonds Elementary.

District staff plan to provide a transition plan to parents and students.

There hasn’t been very much opposition to this move because it’s a “win-win situation,” explains school district spokesperson Ken Hoff.

“Simonds is a very small school in population so this will boost their numbers and the U-Connect is wanting to grow so now it can do so,” said Hoff.

The virtual schooling program is proving popular and successful for students who don’t fit into the traditional classroom setting.

Last year, the board approved the program’s expansion into Grade 10, but the goal is to offer add a grade each year so it becomes K-12.

Students are home-schooled, with online support by educators. The students also attend class about once a week.

With the Lochiel site closed, the district can look to sell it and put those funds towards a new high school in Willoughby.

Surrey firefighter Jay Easton, a Langley resident, died as a result of injuries from a motorcycle crash in Maple Ridge on May 20.

Man dies of injuries A Langley motorcyclist involved in a crash in Maple Ridge on May 20 has died from his injuries.

Jay Easton, a 45-year-old Surrey firefighter went into cardiac arrest on Tuesday, June 2 and died.

He was in a collision with an SUV driven by an 89-year-old at 227 Street and the Haney Bypass.

Easton, a member of the Surrey Fire Department since July of 1996, was airlifted to Royal Columbian Hospital, but the injuries were believed to be non-life threatening at the time.

On the Surrey Fire Fighters Association website, Easton is described as selfless, with a caring nature and goodwill towards his co-workers and actively involved with the fire department.

The auditor-general’s report into spending in Canada’s Senate is very disturbing reading — not because of horrible things done over time to a group of people, as was the case with generations of First Nations children — but because of the ongoing air of indifference to taxpayers and accountable spending.

No less than 30 senators, including recently-retired senator Gerry St. Germain, who lives in this area, were cited for improper expenditures. While some are taking issue with the A-G’s findings, the standards he believes should govern spending are pretty basic.

A-G Michael Ferguson stated that senators should not be billing for personal trips. They should not be charging for taxis, meals and gifts which have nothing to do with official business, or billing taxpayers for non-Senate business.

They should be keeping detailed and accurate records of all their spending, personal and Senate-related. Any claims for reimbursement should be submitted promptly, and posted online so that the taxpayers who ultimately pay the bills can see how their dollars are used.

Senators should not have the last word on what is considered acceptable spending, or action following investigation of their spending. They are paid by taxpayers, and taxpayers expect that those doing public business, whether in Ottawa, Victoria or Langley, are as careful with their money as individuals are in day-to-day activities.

The reckless approach to using taxpayers’ dollars by a significant number of senators, and the possibility that criminal charges may be laid against some of those who have been audited, has caused a shift in public opinion.

Many people are now backing the NDP pledge to eliminate the Senate.

There is certainly a better case for doing so than ever before. The Supreme Court has basically shut the door on Senate reform, given that it requires unanimity from all provinces.

Abolition also requires unanimity. However, provincial governments could be pressured if there was a national plebiscite question on whether to abolish the Senate, as part of October’s federal election.

Many voices have called for such a vote, and it seems an appropriate way to move forward on this issue.

Such a vote would not be binding in any way. However, if significant majorities in each province backed abolition, there would be significant pressure on both the incoming federal government and provincial governments to agree to abolition by amending the constitution.

That may be the only answer to dealing with this mess.

It’s that time of year again, when you make sure the air conditioning is working in your car and maybe even consider installing an automatic car starter — if you don’t already have one — to cool down the interior before you get in, because you just know, “it’s going to be an oven in there.”

With the heat comes the annual warnings about leaving pets in your car. Not heeding these warnings can lead to tragic consequences, yet we continue to see parked vehicles with furry friends cooped up inside — usually a dog.

Sure, most people leave their windows down a crack to allow for air circulation, but studies have shown that doing so doesn’t help much to prevent dangerously high temperatures in an enclosed space.

Dogs play an important role in people’s lives. “Man’s best friend” is a commonly-accepted moniker for a reason, after all.

Many take their dog everywhere, as they would young children or other people who can’t be left unaccompanied at home. Some see their dog as a member of the family too important to leave alone at home.

But for whatever reason, some people still feel it’s acceptable to put that “friend” in a dangerous situation that could leave them with heat stroke in a matter of minutes, or worse, kill them.

Mulcair a ‘man of the east’ Editor: There seems to be a lot of hype now, not based on facts and reality, that Thomas Mulcair might have a chance at becoming Canada’s next prime minister. This would be the same scenario as taking back a former spouse from a previous divorce to recreate the nightmare.

This would be a exact repeat of the old days of previous prime ministers Pierre Trudeau, Jean Chretien, and Paul Martin.

Those were the days when the country of Canada ended at the border of Ontario and Manitoba. Those three prime ministers ignored the western provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and B.C. Federal funding for infrastructure projects was T H O M A S non-existent.

The problem with this was that the above three prime ministers all lived in eastern Canada, but enjoyed collecting our taxes.

A change of government brought in a prime minister, Conservative Stephen Harper, who was from Alberta.

The four western provinces were once again recognized as being a part of Canada. In B.C. alone, Harper gave federal funding $365 million for the South Fraser Perimeter road, $33 million for Highway 97 from Winfield to Oyama, and $17 million to the Evergreen line, now under construction, just to name a few examples.

That is the result of electing a prime minister who lives in the west.

Electing Mulcair would once again mean the country of Canada ends at the border of Ontario and Manitoba.

With Mulcair as prime minister, it would finish the talk of Quebec ever separating from Canada. Mulcair would say talking about separatism is a crazy idea.

Presently, Mulcair is against the pipeline from Alberta to B.C., but still wants a pipeline to go from Alberta to Montreal, Quebec, where oil then can go by tanker from Montreal via the St. Lawrence River to the open seas of the Atlantic Ocean. A oil spill is nothing in comparison to royalities.

This way, Mulcair could collect on royalities for the province of Quebec. There are suckers born every day. Once a sucker, always a sucker.

Mulcair falls into this category. He fails to recognize that the NDP recently were elected to run the Alberta provincial government only due to vote splitting. Only M U LC A IR 25 NDP seats were won on the NDP name alone, and the balance were a result of vote splitting by the Conservatives and the Wild Rose.

Mulcair fails to realize that in the October, 2015 federal election, there is no Wild Rose party, and these votes will go to the Conservatives. The latest polling shows the Conservatives with 54 per cent of the federal vote in Alberta. Mulcair proves to us in his photo-ops that he does not do any research before making comments on a topic.

It’s amusing that retired Langley Advance editor Bob Groeneveld continues obsessive jabs against Harper. Hey Bob — relax, try to let it slide and enjoy retired life. Langley has traditionally been a conservative electorate for years.

The NDP, Liberals and Greens are desperately trying to make Harper look bad with false allegations of the government being “Anti-Science.”

Big media is also playing the “group think” innuendo game repeating the “Muzzled Scientist” mantra. Only one problem,

the premise is all wrong.

No doubt it’s going to be about global warming and climate science, with the big Paris Summit coming up. The big unions, like the 60,000-member Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada, and other unions are also partisan and agitating against Harper.

It’s obvious the enviro-activists want to use public scientists at taxpayer expense for the purpose of promoting their causes.

It’s really bureaucrat scientists ludicrously attempting to establish government policy to suit their own political agenda.

“Environment Canada forbids scientists from speaking publicly on issues such as climate change,” according to the

Canadian Press.

Well, I should hope so. You can’t have public employees releasing or announcing contentious ideology-influenced information (whether propaganda or not) in all directions.

The U.S. has the Hatch Act, which is specific legislation to limit political activities of federal bureaucrats.

So-called public scientists and bureaucrats with some science background who work for us taxpayers in structured government departments should report within the established chain of command. Anybody who has a job knows they can’t go over their bosses’ heads and pronounce company policy to suit

their own personal agenda.

It’s natural protocol that government departments assign the work and control the process of that work, and determine the worthiness of information release and who is authorized to publicly release it.

It’s normal worldwide that government scientists have less freedom to speak publicly than independent or university scientists.

We should be thanking the Harper Conservative government who are supposed to be managing our business responsibly, not wasting tax dollars catering to endless climate change propaganda.

Poppy campaign funds City fire department outfitted used to help equip LMH with oxygen masks for pets BLANKET WARMER, LIFT DONATED The Langley branch of the Royal Canadian Legion has donated $13,000 from the proceeds of their annual poppy campaign to purchase two vital pieces of equipment for Langley Memorial Hospital; a blanket warmer for the Critical Care Unit (valued at $7,500) and a sit-to-stand patient lift for Extended Care (valued at $5,500).

Being admitted to a medical facility can be stressful.

Not only are patients often faced with the uncertainty of their health and well-being, they’re also forced to spend time away from the comfort of their home.

To help make their treatment and recuperation as comfortable and relaxed as possible, heated blankets and linens are provided to ease stress and provide necessary medical care.

Heated blankets and linens are used in numerous applications throughout the hospital and blanket warmers are found on almost every patient unit — from emergency, delivery or recovery rooms to critical care units and residential care facilities.

Medical blanket warmers are a necessary tool for increasing a patient’s body temperature and decreasing blood loss.

They can also result in fewer surgical site infections and shorter stays. Mobile Sit-toStand patient lifts are used in a variety of units throughout the hospital and are specially designed for people who have difficulty in standing up on their own from a seated position. They can be easily moved between locations, rooms and users.

Mobile lifts are a necessary and highly-used piece of equipment for residential care facilities where patients require a varying degree of mobility assistance to carry out their daily routine. Lifts can be

adapted for each raising or lifting operation to the capabilities of the individual patient and can be adjusted to accommodate patients of most sizes.

Components, such as padding, can be added for those who are sensitive to underarm or leg pressure. They are a cost-effective solution where it is not possible to install a ceiling lift system.

Thanks to Mountain View Veterinary Hospital, Langley City and Township and Abbotsford fire departments are now outfitted with pet oxygen mask kits.

On Tuesday, Mountain View Dr. Renee Ferguson was at the Langley City fire hall to provide firefighters with the kits and to train them on how to use them on dogs and cats.

Collectively, the Township of Langley, Abbotsford and City of Langley residents have approximately 83,000 pets.

The kits and the training will help emergency workers save them in the event of a fire.

Father’s Day Golf Skills Challenge

“This campaign has really captured people’s attention, we’ve had information requests from Vancouver, North Vancouver, Campbell River, Kelowna and Prince George from people wanting to get Pet O2 Masks on their local fire trucks,” said Ferguson’s husband, Matt.

The Fergusons came up with idea to hold a fundraiser in April, offering pet nail trims by donation. The goal was to raise enough money to outfit the Township trucks.

The fundraiser was so successful, with the support of the community, that within two weeks, they had reached their goal.

With the extra funds, they bought kits for surrounding fire departments.

The annual 3rd Canadian Army Veterans (CAV) Ride for the Fallen returns to Langley on Saturday, June 20 with a memorial service at Langley’s Derek Doubleday Arboretum.

The event, held each June for the past six years, pays tribute to Silver (Memorial) Cross families — Canadians who have lost spouses, sons and daughters during active duty.

Five of those families will be in attendance at the Langley event, said Ride For the Fallen founder and president of 3rd CAV ROME unit, Barry Drews.

From its inception, said Drews, the day has been meant as an opportunity for Silver Cross family members to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

But the public is also invited to come to Doubleday Arboretum to welcome the riders and pay their respects. Drews expects they will arrive around 12:30 p.m., but advises anyone who wants to attend to arrive early.

Township of Langley mayor Jack Froese will attend and Langley MP Mark Warawa will fly in from Ottawa to attend the event, said Drews.

When he first came up with the idea for the ride, the intent was to create Western Canada’s version of Ontario’s famed Highway of Heroes.

Since the sign was unveiled during the 2012 Ride for the Fallen, the initiative has expanded across Canada. Currently, the only province that does not have its own designated Highway of Heroes is Prince Edward Island, said Drews.

He expects that will change by next year.

‘Poverty comes with many faces,’ says shelter director DEMAND FOR GATEWAY OF HOPE SERVICES AT RECORD LEVELS,CONTINUING TO GROW

Demand for help — whether it comes in the form of a meal, a bed or a hot shower — is on the rise in Langley — and it shows no sign of slowing.

Last December, the Salvation Army’s Gateway of Hope distributed more than 550 Christmas hampers to singles, couples without children and to seniors struggling to make ends meet within the community.

That is a record number for the shelter.

And so far in 2015, the number of people looking for help is continuing to grow, said Jim Coggles, Gateway of Hope executive director.

As summer approaches, Gateway of Hope has experienced significant increases in the number of people accessing some of its key services, he said. “We’ve seen a marked increase over the last two and three months in the number of people coming to our daily community meal. “Rising from an average of 100 meals served for lunch or dinner daily, now we’re serving as many as 150. “In fact, one Sunday dinner this past month saw a record number of 180 meals served out of the warm and welcoming community kitchen, which the four local Rotary Clubs helped financially to create five years ago when Gateway of Hope was constructed,� said Coggles.

People of all ages and varying levels of lowto no-income or need are welcome.

Although there have been some new faces in the crowd recently, the shelter is also seeing many regulars, who might normally come two or three times a week, now coming more often because they’re having a

tough time getting by. “Our staff connected with one young couple who both recently lost their jobs and, consequently, their home.

They’re now living in a tent and coming to us for hot meals and showers — literally, just to survive,� said Coggles. “Our beds here are full and we’re doing whatever we can to help.�

Gateway of Hope’s community meal isn’t the only program experiencing high demand these days. The income tax preparation pro-

gram offered by Gateway’s Community and Family Services Office has processed a record number of tax returns this year for individuals and families who qualify for this needed service.

The numbers have climbed from an average of 270 returns over the past few years to over 360 this year. “This is significant, because most of the men and women coming to us for this service are not necessarily homeless, though a number of them are certainly at risk,� said

Coggles.

They’re either living on a limited pension or income assistance or they are the working poor — living below the margin, he added.

And this group of vulnerable community members seems to be growing. “The reality is, poverty comes with many faces; the visibly homeless person on the street; the senior living on a greatly restricted income; the individual with a physical or mental health condition on income assistance, or the sin-

gle mom trying to care for her family on minimum wage. There are people all around us who are struggling just to survive.�

But there is something the community can do to help, said Coggles. People can donate or volunteer and then they can ask others to help out as well.

Many of the critical

services Gateway of Hope provides rely entirely upon community funding, so financial support is vital not just at Christmas, but all through the year.

Volunteers help in a variety of ways, too, accounting for almost three quarters of the workforce.

Celebrity softball game to raise awareness about sexual abuse Brother when he joined Big Brothers Big Sisters at the age of nine.

His abuser was later convicted for abusing two boys in Kamloops. But Bhatti never told anyone about the abuse and instead es-

caped reality by using heroin. He found himself living in the Downtown Eastside because ‘that was a place I wasn’t being judged and where I felt comfortable.’

Nearly nine years clean, Bhatti has made it his mission to spread awareness and provide support to other survivors. He started his own non-profit ‘Survivors Supporting Survivors’ group.

He is now a certified interventionist and is helping abuse survivors and addicts get the help they need.

Following the game people can meet the stars and get their autographs by donation as well as participate in a silent auction and raffle prizes, including a 55-inch TV donated by Langley Chrysler, $700 bike from Cranky’s and a Jose Canseco bat.

There are an estimated 50 ball teams playing in the Aldergrove Days tournament that goes all Saturday and Sunday.

Bhatti figured with this many people at the park it will be a great opportunity to raise awareness about sexual abuse and to raise money for Sophie’s Place, the first centre of its kind in B.C. to provide wrap-around services to children who suffer trauma like sexual abuse.

Bhatti continues to advocate for children who have experienced sexual abuse. After hearing from a victim of abuse in Newfoundland, Bhatti will be biking across that province, July 25 to Aug. 8, spreading awareness and funds to help sexually abused children.

Currently Newfoundland has no victim services and the nearest help for kids is in Ontario, said Bhatti.

“Every province should have a centre like Sophie’s Place,” said Bhatti.

Here in B.C., Sophie’s Place offers compassionate services under one roof and was the only one of its kind in the province.

It quickly became clear that environmental stewardship in Langley is an issue which people are passionate about.

“It is our responsibility to be good stewards of the land that we are so fortunate to live in. Thank you to all Langley residents who take pride in our community by working to protect the environment,” said Warawa.

In a new development, nominations will now be accepted year-round.

People can nominate a Langley youth, adult, business or organization. Nomination forms are available online at markwarawa.com and leps.bc.ca and will be accepted until May 6, 2016.

Individual winner St. Pierre has worked to preserve the Yorkson Creek watershed,

and for the past 10 years, has organized the Young Naturalists afterschool program at James Kennedy Elementary School, which teaches children about nature.

Gavin and his sister Aubree, aged six and four, won in the youth category for caring for the environment through picking up garbage on their street.

Seyem’ Qwantlen Business Group has

embarked on a number of initiatives in Kwantlen First Nation territory to enhance and bring awareness to local species at risk and critical habitats.

Ward’s drill-powered board idea gaining speed GARY AH U J A Ti me s Spo r t s

Tony Ward is not your typical boarder.

“For years, I have had long boards and that sort of thing, before they were in en vogue,” he said.

But he is an idea guy, someone who prides himself on developing innovative ideas.

A few years ago, Ward was trying to develop an electric skateboard, but that idea has since gained traction.

So Ward, a 43-year-old who has spent his entire life in Langley, shifted gears.

And what he came up with has started to turn some heads.

“I have always had quirky ideas and just came up with the idea of a drill-powered skate board,” he explained.

“I just thought it would be fun to try and then I tried it,

and it kind of worked.”

This was about two and a half years ago.

And what he has come up with since is the Kranx Powerstik.

The Kranx Powerstik sees riders attach a cordless drill to their skateboard.

The boarders hold the drill in one hand as they navigate their path.

It allows the boards to reach speeds of up to 23 km/h, Ward explained.

The speed depends on the drill, the board, the wheels and the weight of the rider, he added.

Ward has partnered up with Jon Kroeker — the founder and president of Ktech Manufacturing Inc., a machining company on the Langley/Surrey border — to launch their project.

Green Champion Award for Minchuk

A City of Langley manager has received national recognition for his work in promoting sustainable development.

Gerald Minchuk, the City’s director of development services and economic development, received the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) Green Champion Award — Individual Category — at the Canadian Municipalities Awards of Excellence ceremony, held on Sunday (June 7)in Edmonton.

The FCM Green Champion Award recognizes a municipal staff or elected official who has demonstrated leadership, innovation, and commitment to sustainable development within their municipality or region.

“I am honored and delighted to be the recipient of the 2015 FCM Green GER ALD Champion Award,” said MINCHUK Minchuk.

“It is truly a privilege to work for the City of Langley, and I am very fortunate to be able to work in a dynamic team-oriented workplace, surrounded by dedicated employees and a City Council who are committed to making a positive difference in our community.”

Presenting the award to Minchuk was Green Municipal Fund chairman, Ben Henderson.

It is a dream come true for Jadon Cohee.

Cohee is set to suit up for Canada’s U19 national team at the FIBA world championships in Greece.

“I am honoured,” he said on Wednesday afternoon from Toronto, following a short practice.

“It truly is a blessing to be able to represent my country, to wear that Canadian uniform.

“It is something that I have dreamed about.”

Cohee, who is from Langley and starred at Walnut Grove, was one of 19 players who took part in the team’s training camp from June 6 to 10. From that list, a dozen players were chosen.

“He came in a lot more confident and he backed it up with his game,” said Canadian coach Roy Rana.

“He was very, very good from start to finish and earned his way onto the team.”

Cohee also tried out for the team last year but failed to make the final roster.

“You could have argued he could have made it last year, but there were a lot of guys at that position and we had to make some tough choices,” Rana said.

“This year, he clearly separated himself.”

The team leaves for Europe on June 11 in preparation for the world championships, which begin June 27 in Heraklion, Greece.

Prior to that, the team will head to Spain for some exhibition games.

And Cohee said he learned a lot in his freshman year.

“When I got (to Seattle), I used to get killed every day; I just wasn’t good enough,” he said.

Up until that point, Cohee admitted he had primarily gotten by on his one-on-one skills and his superior athleticism compared to the competition.

But the Seattle coaching staff worked him hard every day and the improvement showed.

“I learned how to run the pick-and-roll, when to shoot, when not to shoot, how to make reads, how to defend,” Cohee said.

“I just got a lot better (and) as the season wore on, I started to get more minutes.”

That was another adjustment as it had been a long time since Cohee didn’t play a starring role on his team.

Growing up, he played up an age group at the club level and then in Grade 10 played on the senior squad for Walnut Grove where the Gators made provincials all three years, finishing second in 2012 and winning the title in 2013. He finished as the

third all-time leading scorer at the B.C. provincial high school championships. “(This) was the first time I was ever on a team where I wasn’t the go-to-guy,” Cohee said.

“But it’s basketball and you want to win, so you have to do what you have to do (to help the team).”

“It’s not like I didn’t get my shots, I just didn’t shoot in volume like I would (before),” he added.

Cohee started six, but primarily played the sixth man role for the Redhawks over the team’s 34 games.

He finished the season averaging 18.4 minutes per game while averaging 5.7 points and 1.6 rebounds.

But while it may have been an adjustment, Cohee said he figured out pretty early that he had the talent to play at the Di-

And it was this experience which helped him crack the Canadian roster.

“I knew coming in after a year of playing Division 1, that I had an advantage because I had been playing against great players all year,” Cohee said.

“Before I went (to the Canadian camp), I told my parents and my (Seattle) coach that I would make the team.”

“I think a year of college ball certainly helped him mature both physically and mentally,” Rana said, adding that Cohee brings versatility in his ability to play either guard position.

“He can shoot the ball, he is

unselfish, good length defensively. He has bought in and is only going to make us better,” Rana said.

Canada is ranked third in the FIBA men’s age-group rankings and are in a group with Australia, Tunisia and Italy.

There are 16 countries competing at the championships, which run until July 5.

Following that Cohee will return home and then begin preparation for his sophomore season in Seattle.

He hopes to crack the starting rotation next season for the Redhawks as well as become one of the top players in the conference.

Honours for Snap Around Jackie

A Langley horse owned by an Aldergrove family has won the Horse Council B.C. 2014 horse of the year, non-competitive award.

Snap Around Jackie, who was born in Terrace but raised and lived in Langley her whole life, was presented the award on May 30 at Chilliwack’s Heritage Park.

The horse is owned by the Hum-

phrey family of Aldergrove, who traded for her in exchange for a 1981 Ford truck. Snap Around Jackie, a quarter horse mare, began as a rodeo horse — barrel racing, team roping, breakaway roping and grand entry — before entering the world of reigning, and then at the age of 18, switching to a career as a vaulting horse.

The mare passed away in November.

Blaze fielding bantam prep team Langley wins three of four The Langley Blaze are looking for bantam (ages 13 and 14) players for a new prep team.

The year-round program will begin in September and is open for players in Langley, Aldergrove, Cloverdale and Maple Ridge.

The team will play out of McLeod Park and use the Blaze indoor facility during the winter and the program will also be

tied in to the Langley Secondary baseball academy.

They will play a schedule against other Premier prep teams, as well as some competition against Washington state squads. There will also likely be tournaments in Arizona and California.

Two honours for Jang A handful of Langley golfers earned honours at the latest stop on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour. The golfers were competing over the weekend at Swan-e-Set Bay Resort and Country Club in Pitt Meadows.

And Redwoods’ Andy Jang won both the long drive competition and the comeback award winner (for the best sec-

ond day improvement) for the bantam boys division.

Emily Xu (Redwoods) won the U15 girls long drive, Willis Lee (Wolfpack Golf Club) won the comeback award for the juvenile boys division, and Fort Langley’s Jackson Jacob (Northview Golf Course) won the bantam boys’ closest-tothe-pin competition.

A pair of shutout victories helped the Langley Blaze win three of four games over the weekend.

The U18 baseball team was up against two of the top teams in the B.C. Premier Baseball League and when the dust had settled, Langley split with the first-place North Shore Twins (17-5) while sweeping the North Delta Blue Jays, knocking them from second to fourth place (12-6) in the standings.

The Blaze (19-8) are tied for second place, a half-game behind the Twins.

Langley lost 12-2 in the opener on Saturday at McLeod Park before bouncing back with a 7-0 win in game two.

Langley will look to build on its threegame winning streak when they host the Okanagan Athletics (17-11) in a four-game set this weekend at McLeod Park.

••• It has been a tough start to the season for the Langley Senior Blaze.

The Blaze split with the Burnaby Senior Bulldogs on Sunday, losing the opener 7-3 before winning game two 11-5. But the team could not build on that victory, falling 7-2 on Monday to the Coquitlam Angels.

The end result is a 1-3 record in the Pacific Metro Baseball League standings.

Langley also had an exhibition doubleheader in Abbotsford on Saturday against the Kamloops Sun Devils— a rematch of the 2014 provincial championships which Kamloops won — with both teams winning onerun games. Kamloops won the opener 4-3 in extra innings before Langley rebounded with the 6-5 win in game two.

The Blaze — who played in Burnaby last night — host the Kelowna Jays in an exhibition game at McLeod Park on Saturday night.

Cycling charities to benefit from GranFondo Proceeds from next month’s Prospera Valley GranFondo will benefit children and youth cycling charities in the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland.

Now in its fourth year, the non-profit mass cycling event attracted 1,200 riders in 2014. This year’s event is July 19 and once again, begins and ends in Fort Langley.

The proceeds from this year’s ride will be split between three youth cycling organizations: Cycling BC’s iRide, a free program to educate kids on fitness and bike safety; DEVO, a youth development cycling program; and Global

Relay Bridge the Gap, which helps young riders bridge the gap financially between junior and elite riding levels.

Three routes are being offered for this year’s GranFondo: the 48km PrestoFondo, the 88-km MedioFondo and the 160-km GranFondo.

And the first of those three, the London Drugs Ride for Hope PrestoFondo, is raising money for Canuck Place Children’s Hospice.

The first 75 participants to register from this distance who commit to raising $250 will receive a custom ride jersey as well as a reduced entry fee of $75.

Driving with winter tires longer than you should, especially on dry pavement, can cause them to wear out faster, meaning you will be replacing them sooner.

At this point, I once again took over driving without the hassle of re-setting my seat preferences; the settings were conveniently programmed into the seat position memory. Once back on the road I really put the pedal to the metal – the acceleration was brisk and delivered plenty of power. With that much power, typically comes a hefty bill at the gas station, and not because of all the ice cream sandwiches purchased there.

However, a comparison check shows the RDX offers fuel efficiency is rivalled by very few luxury SUVs. Given the often-steep gas prices we see these days, the RDX’s fuel economy on average is 10.6 litres/100 km, allowing motorists to enjoy summer drives guilt-free.

The pleasure of cruising the coastline was amplified by the views offered from the RDX’s raised stance. Driving as the sun dipped below the horizon meant it was time to open the moonroof. The

moonroof is easily operated with a onetouch power mechanism along with a visor that actively reduces the vibrations and noise associated with having a window open, allowing for a smooth and noise-free ride.

Last, but certainly not least, I had long been awaiting my parents’ arrival with the anticipation of finally properly learning how to parallel park. Much to my surprise, the Acura RDX provides all of the tools required to successfully complete this complex and sometimes dangerous (when I’m behind the wheel) task. Loraine Yvonne (Sigalet) Davis Born Sept. 28, 1943 in Summerland and moved to the Sperling area of Langley in 1948, Loraine was the eldest of 7 children of Walter and Dagmar Sigalet. She was a dedicated sibling, helping to raise her brothers and sisters while working on the family farm. Loraine was an avid gardener, a fantastic cook, very creative, freely sharing her wealth of knowledge to anyone interested. Loraine passed away April 25, 2015 after a long illness. She is survived by her loving husband of 33 years, Jim Davis, her step children Sid (Darlene), Carol, Janice (David), step grandchildren Ryan, Wesley, Laura, Rachel and Patrick.
