Kimberley couple wins by playing the Extra on a Lotto Max draw

PHOTO SUBMITTED

Kimberley residents Dana Haggar and Rhonda Carr-Haggar took home $500,000 from the recent Lotto Max draw.

Career opportunities

When Dana Haggar purchased his wife a Lotto Max ticket as an anniversary present, he ďŹ gured it would be a small gesture. But the gift turned out to be a grand one, with Dana and Rhonda Carr-Haggar winning $500,000 on the May 22, 2015 draw – all because Dana said ‘yes’ to the Extra. Dana, who is still in shock, says he is thrilled with his decision to purchase a Lotto Max ticket as a present for his wife. “A small anniversary gift turned into a very big one when I purchased a winning Lotto Max ticket with the Extra for my wife,â€?

smiled Dana. The Kimberley couple was enjoying their morning coffee when Rhonda decided to check their numbers on bclc.com – that’s the moment when their lives changed. “I saw that I had matched one, two, three and then four of the numbers,â€? exclaimed Rhonda. “I could not believe it!â€? The couple says they will continue to play the game that made them $500,000 richer. “Our licence plate contains the letters WNR, which I now believe stands for winners,â€? said Rhonda. “I will deďŹ nitely continue to play Lotto Max with

Wasa Trikids hit the finish line. From an elite event of standard distance the Wasa Triathlon, in the Kootenays of B.C., has transformed into one of the most family friendly festival weekends in Western Canada. The event has grown over the last 20 years from 90 competitors to over 1000 participants with nearly one quarter being young triathletes aged between 4 to 15 years old. Race director, Charlie Cooper says “the event attracts families from all over B.C., Alberta and North West USA. The growth in recent

Photo submitted

years has been led by the number of young triathletes coming with their families. We are proud to cater for all ages with the first event day being dedicated to support our younger competitors”. On Saturday the 13th June, the Trikids Triathlon will again see a large group of smiley kids crossing the finish line for a well-earned medal. Cooper explains that all young competitors will get to enjoy the same race experience as the adults: professional announcer Steve King, loads of volun-

teer support, drink stations, electronic timing, the exciting finish chute lined up with spectators, a catered lunch and a groovy t-shirt. “We want these young triathletes to love the sport, experience the competition but above all it’s about participation and having a fun weekend with the family” says Charlie. Many Albertan families use the Wasa triathlon as a camping weekend, enjoying the long summer mountain days and impressive setting. For mums and dads there is some serious racing to be had on the Sunday with the sprint and standard distances both for individual and relay teams. The scenic shores of Wasa Lake attract amateurs and elite triathletes to compete in this swim-bike-run event. First-timers in the sport also target this event as a must-do to kick off their season. It’s not only the picturesque mountain scenery and pure air that attracts competitors says Charlie, the prize money is good too, with $4,300 to be awarded to the top 5 finishers in the women and men categories. The quality of the competition every year makes Wasa’s standard course one of the most

competitive and fastest. All TriKids receive some good orienteering

and preparation to make it a fun, memorable and safe experience. Many

parents report young ones sleeping with their medals and proudly

wearing their Wasa event shirt to school!

Fairmont Lions donate to diabetes centre Last Saturday under a bright blue sky a full slate of 144 golfers hit the links at the annual Fairmont Lions Coy’s Golf Fun Day. The tournament now in its 26th year is one of the more popular golf events in the Fairmont area and its charitable purpose has made a difference to many charities over the years. This year’s event was no exception with the Fairmont & District Lions Club making two exceptional gifts. The first was a $5,000 do-

nation to the Family Resource Centre in Invermere and the second a $4,000 gift to East Kootenay Foundation for Health. The EKFH donation is being directed to the regional Diabetes Wellness Center for the purchase of an IPro monitor and sensor. IPro evaluations use continuous glucose monitoring and records glucose levels 24 hours a day for three days and provide healthcare providers with insights into how diet, medication

and daily activities affect glucose levels. Interior Health’s Diabetes Wellness Programs run throughout the East Kootenay. Thanks to the efforts of the Lions Club, the sponsors who supported the tournament and those who participated in the event there is additional support for people living with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. EKFH presently stewards over 30+ funds in trust for all areas of health care including acute, community integrated services, residential care, lab services and diagnostic imaging. The Weekend View

Another successful Relay for Life

The annual Relay For Life was held last weekend and Relay participants managed to bring in just under $63,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society. “The participants loved both the new venue, and the reduced 6 hour time. Rotary park offered all we needed for the event – shade, sun, water park and playground for the kids, ample room for our participants, multiple walking routes for folks to choose from, and greater visibility to passers-by,” said Lori Stevenson, Team Lead, Community Giving with the Canadian

Cancer Society. “One Little Ginger, (a relay team) has designated their funds raised to go to brain cancer research, which will trigger a matching gift from Brain Canada. That matching gift will push us just past our fundraising goal for the event. She added that the tattoo fundraiser, at Sink’n’Ink Tattoos raised more than $2000 for the cause. “As usual the citizens and businesses of Cranbrook were extremely generous, and we are very grateful for their overwhelming support,” said Stevenson.

10 Neat Things by Top Crop Garden, Farm & Pet

What irrigation can do for you

1. Irrigation increases what you can grow. Whether it’s the lawn or starting a drip system for a garden or pot, irrigation can solve a lot. If you are tired of being rushed in the morning, setting up sprinklers, or tired of coming home after a 34 degree day to a wilting hanging basket, irrigation solves these problems. Plants under more consistent watering environments will thrive and you will find it easier to excel at growing. 2. H2O Delivery. In the last 4,000 years, many water delivery systems have been created, starting with early water-powered wheels. In the mid 20th century, the invention of diesel and electric motors made accessing ground water much easier. Today, we have fully automated and computerized systems that are programmable and make watering as easy as pushing a button. 3. Running through the Sprinkler. The most visible method of water delivery is a sprinkler or overhead irrigation. This includes anything from the sprinkler in your garden that kids like to jump through in the heat of summer, to wheel line irrigation systems used to water crops on large farm fields. 4. A Slow and Steady Drip. Trickle or drip irrigation is a delivery method that drips water onto the soil, close to the plant, at a low rate - anywhere between 2 to 20 litres per hour. This system consists of the main irrigation line and a web of small diameter plastic pipes, fitted with a variety of small outlets called emitters or drippers. 5. Close to You! Unlike sprinkler irrigation where the entire surface area is wetted, drip systems apply water close to the plants so that only the parts of the soil in which the roots grow are watered. With drip irrigation, water is applied more frequently than with other methods - sometimes even daily. This creates a high moisture level in the soil that allows plants to flourish. 6. All Lined Up in a Row. Drip irrigation is most suitable for row crops, including garden vegetables and soft fruit, or tree and vine crops, where one or more emitters can be provided for each plant. Drip irrigation is good for various soil types, but drip rates and frequencies might have to be adjusted. On clay soils, water must be applied slowly to avoid surface water runoff. Sandy soils need more water emitted to ensure the ground is moist enough. 7. Hanging by a Dripper. Drip irrigation is also an effective way to water hanging baskets as they typically need a lot of water. When plants are flowering and it is hot outside, baskets will often need to be watered at least once a day. An automated system with a timer can help you make sure they get enough water. 8. Can’t Take the Pressure? Drip systems can be tied into an existing underground irrigation system, a garden tap and in some cases even a gravity supply, such as a rain barrel, can be used. Drip systems are designed to run at a relatively low pressure of 20 to 30 psi, meaning that depending on the source, you may have to install a pressure regulator to prevent emitters from popping off. 9. Don’t get Plugged Up. Emitters for drip systems come in various shapes and sizes, from the small flag emitters to larger long-path emitters. Even drip line and soaker hoses can be part of your system. The opening on emitters is relatively small, so you will need to install a small filter in your system. This will prevent debris from entering the system and potentially clogging up your emitters. 10. Plants need Food and Water. Besides providing your plants with the necessary moisture to thrive, you can also use the system to distribute nutrition by installing a fertilizer injector. Adding it to a drip system is a great way of managing your feeding, ensuring each plant gets the same amount of fertilizer and limiting the waste.

Teck consults on Coal Mountain phase 2 by Katelyn Dingman - The Free Press Elk Valley residents gathered at Hosmer Community Hall on Thursday, June 4 to re-

anything that our working group hasn’t.” Thus far, the valued components in the project’s AE include assessing air quality and climate; environmental noise and vibration; terrain, surficial geology and soils; hydrogeology; surface water hydrology and surface water quality. Coal Mountain Operation General Manager Ed Morash noted that similar to every mining project in the valley, water quality is likely to be the biggest issue. Morash, however, emphasized that the Coal Mountain Phase 2 project is essential, as the original mining site is predicted to be complete by 2017. “The life of mining at Coal Mountain has gotten to be quite short,” he noted. “We have less than three years before the reserve on that mountain is depleted.” With approximately 300 employees working at the original site, maintaining Teck’s workforce is essential for Morash. “It’s about longevity of jobs and having the ability to take that workforce and to take that resource and move it over see Coal Mountain page 9

to Coal Mountain Phase 2 and continue employment for those people.” Nic Milligan, Manager of Community and Aboriginal Affairs, reiterated Morash’s remarks, adding, “Coal Mountain Phase 2 represents the future of our Coal Mountain operation. Our hope is as we work through the regulatory process, we will have

Coal Mountain Phase 2 to develop and those employees will transfer over there.” Despite Morash and Milligan’s concerns over the longevity of jobs in the valley, they both also emphasized the importance of community engagement in the project and understanding certain areas of disturbance. The Teck employees stressed the need for

public consultation. “It is very important for us as a company to understand the communities concerns as we develop our project,” Milligan said. “We recognize that these communities support our operation. We want to hear what people have to say about our project

and ensure that we use those concerns to guide our project plan.” Although the Coal Mountain Phase 2 project is currently only in the pre-application stage, the public consultation allows the EAO to identify issues and values important to the community in ad-

dition to increasing an understanding for local circumstances — both essential components of the EA process. The first public comment period will take place until June 24, and the public is encouraged to submit comments to www.eao.gov.bc.ca

Property Tax Notices for the City of Cranbrook have now been mailed to all property owners on record. If you have not already received your notice, please contact City Hall at (250)426-4211 so that a copy may be forwarded to you. Taxes are due on July 2, 2015, after which time a 10% penalty will be added to any unpaid current taxes. Home Owner Grants may be claimed even if current taxes are not paid in full. Penalties apply to Home Owner Grants not claimed by July 2, 2015. If you are participating in the pre-authorized payment program, please note that the prepayment amount on your tax notice includes the May 15th and June 15th payments. As your prepayment amounts were based on an estimate there may still be a balance owing. To avoid a penalty, please review your Tax Notice carefully and make sure you pay any outstanding balance prior to July 2, 2015. To help you avoid the last minute rush, we accept post-dated cheques. We also accept Interac Debit Card payments. Payment may also be made by telephone/pc banking and through most financial institutions. You must still claim the Home Owner Grant at City Hall or online via the link on the www.cranbrook.ca website.

Municipal Pension Retirees’ Association Meeting, Executive 10am, Regular meeting 10:45am, Guest speaker (Rick Lockhart, Pharmacist (shingles vaccine) 11:30am. No host lunch Noon.

Slugs: To the courier in Cranbrook, who consider that a phone call with a busy signal is a requisite call to your home to let you know that you have a package to pick up. Of course there is no message left and then they return your package to sender, so angry with them!! They don’t even understand how wrong this is. Slugs: To the person who picked up my car and house keys at Hot Shots and never bothered to return them there, hope you know they cannot be copied. Hugs: To the nice gentleman, who came up to the till at the ABC on Friday evening and paid for 3 ladies dinner. He said he was paying forward and does this once a month. It was a complete shock to us and unbelievable. I had never

had anything like this happen before A big thank you to whoever you are. Slugs: To the person who left their beautiful Golden Retriever in the car parked in the C.I.B.C. parking lot. When I drove up the dog had his head out of the window hoping to get some air. It was noon and the temperature was 20 degrees. I went into the bank, gone 9 minutes and when I came out the dog was laying as far back as he/she could to get out of the sun. Ok, windows down or not your dog is not comfortable inside your hot car. Every summer in Cranbrook I see this over and over.STOP IT !!! Slugs: To whomever decided to make the crossword in the Advertiser such small and unclear printing that it is

almost impossible to work. Hugs: To the customer service guys at Home Hardware who helped me out with my hummingbird feeder. You two are the epitome of great customer service! Slugs: To whoever took away the concrete bench from the Abbott Gardens bus stop on Kootenay Street N. Hugs: To the lady who put on a wonderful Easter Egg display in the foyer of the Cranbrook Public Library. Hugs: Hats off to Ron, Todd and Curt at Rocky Mountain Pump Service for the fast, courteous and thorough service with several visits to our house to make sure everything was 100%. It’s hard to find good satisfying service like this anymore. Thanks Guys!

If you have a Hug or a Slug...we’d like to hear it. Simply email us at shannon@kootenayadvertiser.com with your short quips, compliments or complaints. We will print the anonymous submissions for all to see. Be honest, but all we ask is you keep it tasteful. Hugs and Slugs will be printed as space allows, if we miss yours check back next week and you will be bumped to the start of the list. You can also drop by a written submission to our office at 1510 2nd Street N. or call Shannon at (250)489-3455 or 1-800-665-2382

At this point, I once again took over driving without the hassle of re-setting my seat preferences; the settings were conveniently programmed into the seat position memory. Once back on the road I really put the pedal to the metal – the acceleration was brisk and delivered plenty of power. With that much power, typically comes a hefty bill at the gas station, and not because of all the ice cream sandwiches purchased there. However, a comparison check shows the RDX offers fuel efficiency is rivalled by very few luxury SUVs. Given the often-steep gas prices we see these days, the RDX’s fuel economy on average is 10.6 litres/100 km, allowing motorists to enjoy summer drives guilt-free. The pleasure of cruising the coastline was amplified by the views offered from the RDX’s raised stance. Driving as the sun dipped below the horizon meant it was time to open the moonroof. The

Audi: teaching computers to think like drivers digital-tech company based in Santa Clara, California, to create a vehicle computer the way human brains process

new information. To understand the concept, think of the car’s way of learning as being similar to that of child. Caregivers teach a baby to identify things perceived with senses: a circle, a square, colors. Object edges are very important in this process. The edges form meaningful, distinct shapes, which the brain starts to recognize. A fire truck is red, has a certain shape and wheels, but at first, the baby might think all trucks are fire engines. Then the child learns to differentiate between different kinds of trucks. The car technology enables pixels to be generated by camera images, in a similar way to how the human eyeball transfers images to the brain. The Audi processor, about the size of a tablet PC and powered by NVIDIA’s Tegra processor, analyzes every frame of video that comes in, and it senses edges which it groups into shapes. It learns that the shapes are objects then learns to differentiate those objects. This artificial intelligence enables the Audi processor to detect, for instance, features such as eyes, a nose and mouth, and it figures out that they all fit into a face. It also allows vehicles to detect and identify other vehicles. All of this information goes into a database to foster future advances in such recognition. The system serves as one of the important bases of intelligence for piloted driving. With every kilometre travelled, the car gets smarter. But it takes more than terabytes of such data to make for successful autonomous driving. The data has to be processed very quickly: 30 video frames a second. The information must be transmitted, recognized, processed, analyzed – and provide a reaction – almost in-

MINI: a new kind of driving glasses MINI is bringing a completely new meaning to driving glasses. At the Shanghai Auto show, the BMW sub-brand has offered first sight of its revolutionary eyewear. “MINI Augmented Vision gives an insight into how intelligent connectivity between a MINI car and eyewear into which relevant content is projected might work in the future,” explained Dr. Jörg Preißinger, project-manager MINI Augmented Vision, BMW Group research and technology. Using see-through technology, the eyewear projects information in the driver’s direct field of view without concealing other traffic. The technology will enable drivers to enter destination details outside of the car then transfer the information to the onboard navigation. The navigation will then display from the current location to the vehicle or from the vehicle to the final destination. Direction instructions in the shape of coloured arrows will appear projected on the road ahead at the turns. Current speed and posted speed limits will be projected into the driver’s field of view above the steering wheel, without obscuring the road ahead. A small icon shows in the eyewear when a message is received and the SMS/message can then be read out by the “car”. Now this is an amazing feature: A virtual view through parts of the vehicle (such as Apillars and doors) makes visible external areas or objects concealed by the car’s body parts!

OUTER SPACE Creating an outdoor oasis

Trees make the perfect statement Are you looking to add a wow factor to your yard or landscaping design? Trees can be used to make perfect statement pieces. Whether adding a tree to an existing yard or starting from scratch, trees can be used as the basis for the remainder of the yard. When deciding what tree you want to plant, the possibilities are truly endless. From fruit bearing trees to uniquely sculpted topiaries and everything in between, there is something for every yard. The secret to plant-

ing successful growing trees is to give them the best possible start you can give them. It is crucial to pick the right tree for the space, which means think 10 years ahead. Nothing is more frustrating than having to remove a tree when it gets too big or invades too far into something like power lines or the neighbor’s yard. When trees are newly planted and smaller, that is when they are the most susceptible to problems. Proper planting starts at the base

with the soil. You want to ensure that your tree has proper soil that will help establish a healthy root system. We are always asked “how big of hole should I dig?” The answer to that is “the bigger the better.” This is especially true if your existing soil is poor quality, as much of our area is. Another key factor to consider is bone meal and a liquid transplant solution. Bone meal is a slow feed for the roots and the liquid transplant solution is a quick acting root supplement. And, as

with every new plant, a consistent water supply is crucial for the first few years of the tree’s life. In our area, another key element to success is staking material. By securely staking a tree, it helps stabilize the roots from windy days which allow them to attach and develop more readily. This is crucial in our windy area. When considering what type of trees to plant, take in a couple of considerations. Fruit trees are a great addition to a backyard.

They even have varieties of fruit trees with several different kinds of fruit on them, for small yards. In our area, we can pick from apples, pears, plums, and cherries, just to name a few. Now, if you are considering planting a specimen tree for beauty, take into consideration what colour of blooms and leaves you may want. Hawthornes and Royalty Crabs are always a beautiful addition for a front yard. As with any deciduous tree, be sure to take in what height

and spread you may want. As well, there are trees that do better in shady conditions and different soil types. There are a lot of options out there, so talk to a nursery expert before planting. Now, if you are wanting green all year, you may want to consider an evergreen. From spruce trees and cedars, to upright and crawling junipers, the choices are many. As well, some options are a much better consideration if deer are an issue. The key to successfully growing

evergreens is to plant properly and ensure you water well into the fall. Nothing is prettier than Christmas lights on evergreens in the yard in winter. That being said, a mixture of evergreens and deciduous trees is also a nice option. Trees are a good investment for any yard. Be sure to talk to the right people to get good information and take the guess work out of it. And remember: “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago; the next best time is today”

Edo Japan eyeing expansion into Cranbrook Edo Japan, known for its signature Teppan style cooking, is one of the best-kept secrets in Canada’s quick-service restaurant industry. The once mom and pop kiosk, which started with a single store in Calgary in 1979, has since transformed into a highly profitable business with more than 100 locations across Canada. Edo Japan’s focus is on providing consumers with a ’Simply Better’ experience through their excellent customer service, fresh and healthy food offerings, and inviting restaurant environments – a mandate set in place by President and CEO Tom Donaldson when he took over the business in 1999. With a profitable franchise business model and a strong emphasis on franchise relations, Edo Japan has experienced great success in their growth across Canada. Edo Japan was recently named the Bronze winner of the 2014 Canadian Franchise Association (CFA) Awards of Excellence in Franchising. Edo Japan has also been honoured as a CFA Franchisees Choice designate for the past 4 years in a row. The true strength of a franchise system lies in the mutually-rewarding relationship between a franchisor and its franchisees. Being a Franchisees’ Choice designee is an honour and a vote of confidence because the high rankings in franchisee satisfaction come directly from the franchisees themselves. Edo Japan is excited to begin offering their services and delicious meals in new regions as they continue to expand in the Canadian marketplace. Famous for their signature Teriyaki sauce, made fresh daily, Edo Japan also boasts a full service menu that includes a wide variety of made-toorder sushi, noodle and rice dishes, soups, spring rolls and kids meals. Always a top priority for this Canadian company is connecting with customers on a personal level and getting involved in their surrounding communities. Edo Japan’s recent ‘Simply Better’ campaign invited customers and fans to share what moments made their days ‘Simply Better.’ With one goal in mind, putting a smile on someone’s face, Edo Japan made a number of those moments come true. With additional community-focused programs, like their ‘Simply Better’ holiday giving campaign, Edo Japan is also committed to giving back to those in need and frequently engages in partnerships with local organizations like local food banks across Canada. It is with great enthusiasm that Edo Japan looks forward to serving customers in exciting new markets and letting their legendary service and fresh meals speak for themselves.

There are many ways to say thanks to your dad

Nowadays we tend to see most special occasions from a commercial point of view, and Father’s Day is no exception. But during your search for the perfect gift, be sure not to lose sight of the true nature of this day. Father’s Day is a celebration of the most important man in your life and all he gave to his family over the years.

It may be that for you, highlighting Father’s Day is a way to acknowledge the important role your dad has played in your life since the day you were born. He was your coach, your marriage counsellor (sometimes unsolicited, but still), your Prince Charming or your superhero, and he worked all his life (along with Mom)

to offer the very best to his family. He celebrated your successes with you and always listened to your problems, often relegating his own to the background. Of course, you definitely appreciate all this, but how many times have you actually said so? Make the most of this special June Sunday to say a simple “thank you” to your Dad for all he has given you. Gifts are a rather ephemeral way of expressing your affection, but a few sincere words will remain forever etched in his memory. Whether your father is on the other side of the planet or in the same house as you, take a moment to remind him that without him, you wouldn’t be where you are today. After all, isn’t that the real purpose of Father’s Day?

About that present...

It’s the same story every year: on Fa ther’s Day, what on earth do you give to a man who already has everything he needs? The key to the perfect gift is to buy something that your

father would like to have, but probably wouldn’t buy for himself; it has to be something that would be a real treat for him. Here are a few tips. The handyman dad If your father loves working with his hands, ask questions about his most recent projects and pay attention to what he says. He may mention a tool or gadget that would have been useful, but that he doesn’t have. This could be the perfect opportunity! The techie dad Technology fans usually

have very definite preferences when it comes to their devices and tend to buy for themselves the most current models. In other words, it’s risky to give the latest gadget as a gift. Instead, think about something unusual, along the lines of a Bluetooth speaker for the shower that he can connect to his smart phone! The epicurean dad Does your father enjoy a delicious meal and a good bottle of wine? Of course, treating him to a bottle of his favourite drink or a restaurant meal is always

a safe bet, but maybe you should try to be more original this year by focusing on useful and fun accessories. For example, instead of giving him his usual shortlived bottle of whiskey, you could opt for a beautiful set of whiskey stones to cool his favourite libation. You know your father best, whether he’s sporty, fashion conscious or an avid reader. Whatever his interests are, the important thing is to give him a gift that shows you’ve thought about him; after all, that’s what really counts.
