Trip down memory lane with City bands’ reunion Gaetz Avenue Dance Band and Sam join for special shows

I

t’s a great rock ‘n roll story, and a terrific Red Deer story as well.

Local music fans are invited to kick off summer with a rock ‘n roll bash to remember – two Red Deer bands from the 70s are joining forces for a 40-year reunion party.

Rockin’ in the Old Days! - featuring the Gaetz Avenue Dance Band and Sam - is set for June 26th-27th at Fratters. The music starts at 8 p.m.

“We had our last full-on reunion in 1995 at the Red Deer Lodge, and we said we had so much fun, we’d ‘do it again real soon’,” said drummer Harley Hay, one of the original members of the Gaetz Avenue Dance Band. “That was 20 years ago!”

He added every single original member of Sam featuring singer/ songwriter Richard Harrow, and six of the seven original members of the Gaetz Avenue Dance Band (1971-1975) featuring frontman Thomas ‘The Voice’ Alexander will be onhand for the event.

Rounding out the Gaetz Avenue Dance Band are John Lacey on trumpet, Dave Parfett on Hammond B3 organ, Mike Gueffroy on sax and Gary Thompson on bass. Not able to make the coming show are guitarist Al Grondin and Al Garber on trombone.

Hay is also featured in Sam, which includes Richard Harrow on vocals and guitar, Lynnette Roder on vocals, Ron Mah on guitar, bassist Paul Robinson and filling in on drums will be Don Wells. There will be special guests as well.

Both Hay and Thompson are thrilled about the coming shows, and really have a blast remembering those early days when the Gaetz Avenue Dance Band in particular was in hot demand far beyond Red Deer.

“In about 1970 or so, we were all coming off of being in several different bands and didn’t really know what to do,” said Hay, who recalls sitting down with Lacey at the A&W one night to chat about launching a new band. Pretty much fresh out of high school, they both knew several guys who

After pursuing a few other sounds, styles and even monikers, The Gaetz Avenue Dance Band was eventually formed, bringing together talented musicians from different genres. There was an immediate chemistry and the right blend of talent – the guys knew there was something special about this team.

And it wasn’t long before fans and important contacts in the biz started taking note.

“It was tremendous. Those two years – 1974 and 1975 – we traveled so much,” said Thompson.

Things were good here at home, but the Gaetz Avenue Dance Band’s popularity elsewhere in Canada was virtually exploding. “We traveled from Manitoba to Vancouver and then down to Washington.” This was indeed a full-time gig for the guys at the time, too. “We were going for the big time.

“More than two or three months of those two years, we would play as often as 26 jobs a

month,” he added. “We would be at the University of Regina and have to be, the next day at noon, in Edmonton at NAIT to play a noon-time affair.

“Then we’d be at the University of Alberta that night. Then we’d be off to Fort St. John.”

Then they’d tear down at around 1 a.m. and head to a provincial park on the Manitoba border for yet another gig. Needless to say, this kind of whirlwind schedule takes a toll – even when a person is in their late teens and early 20s.

“We played every high school in Edmonton and Calgary that was ever built and still stands today,” he said with a chuckle.

“And Kelowna was really the city that adopted us.”

Vancouver and Point Roberts, Washington were frequent stops at major clubs as well.

But eventually, the guys came to a bit of a crossroads.

“I think we were also facing a change in the world overall – disco was coming in,” explained Hay. “And also, the issue of Canadian content was really coming

in as well. We were a cover band – we only recorded about three original tunes at Tommy Banks’ studio in Edmonton. So a lot of bands were going down that road, and it became a different situation.

“I think we also just got tired – physically and mentally tired – of being on the road. And we could see the writing on the wall with the disco and all of the other changes coming.”

Thompson also pointed out that a couple of major promoters in Vancouver were showing strong interest in the band, but they pointed out that the guys would have to be based at the west coast. “One of them said, we’d like to take you guys on. But you need to get out of where you are – you need to be in Vancouver.

“I won’t speak for anyone else in the band. But I can tell you that when those words were thrown at me I thought I don’t want to leave home,” he said with a smile.

But there were no real regrets.

The guys headed home, settled down and followed their own paths to various careers and of

course the raising of families.

“I think Gary is right – I think Vancouver was the turning point,” said Hay. “I wasn’t really keen on leaving here either – I had some other plans; I wanted to go to film school. And I was getting a little tired of being on the road.

“I think at that point we just looked at each other and said, ‘What do we really want to do?’ I also think we were caught in the middle of changing times, and with the age we were at – we had to make a decision about our future.”

The love for music, of course, continued. And in the meantime, they are utterly thrilled to join forces again for the coming shows.

“It’s just really an exciting thought to put this together,” said Hay. “Mostly, I’m excited about seeing our friends onstage and in the audience and remembering those dance hall days.

“And we still have the chops!”

Agency represented at national harm reduction conference

BY JENNA SWAN Red Deer Express ‘New Perspectives on Illegal Drugs’ was the topic of interest at this year’s Alberta Harm Reduction Conference held last week in Edmonton.

Jennifer Vanderschaeghe, executive director of Central Alberta AIDS Network Society (CAANS), attended the conference along with 11 staff members, three volunteers, and three community members with a history of drug use and members from at least five other Red Deer agencies.

Vanderschaeghe explained highlights of the conference, which explored viewpoints on the legality of drugs.

“The logic of what drugs are legal and what drugs are illegal is fundamentally flawed,” stated Vanderschaeghe.

“We have some drugs like sugar and alcohol that are legal and cause substantial health issues.

“Then you have drugs that cause very little damage that are illegal.”

She used crystal methamphetamine as an example, explaining the drug – which is commercially produced - will be illegal if created in a home, however when created by pharmacists in a lab, it will then be marketed to children to reduce behavioural issues in the form of Adderall.

While traditionally harm reduction has been related to HIV and Hepatitis C – over the years issues such as Fentanyl use, overdose prevention, criminalization and legalization of substances, sex work laws, access to methadone, pregnancy and drug use and the education of youth have become increasingly important issues in harm reduction agencies across the province.

While at the conference Vanderschaeghe and her team heard from Dr. Kenneth Tupper from the School of Population and Public Health, University of British Columbia.

One thing that hit home for Vanderschaeghe was when Tupper stated, “Getting police to teach drug education is like getting a nun to teach sex education.”

“He showed that programs like D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) don’t work and that fear-based methods of drug education only perpetuates the notion that only bad people use drugs. He looked into drug education and said that instead of fear we should be using knowledge.

“Teaching from a fear base or from a point where you say that if you use drugs it will screw up your life. When you do drugs and you don’t become addicted right away and the world didn’t end you’re going to think it’s okay and that you were lied to.”

She explained this means harm reduction agencies and health professionals must now start to look into the real reasons why people are addicted to drugs, with statistics showing 80-90% of people who have used illegal drugs are not addicted – why then are the other 10-20% becoming addicted?

“There are receptors in our brain that drugs attach to and make us high - but we don’t all have the same amount of these receptors, so we looked at what are the clinical reasons why some people will get addicted and others won’t? Ultimately people use drugs because they feel good - they continue to use drugs because that may be the only feeling good they get.”

The CAANS team also heard from Dr. Carl Hart, a neuropsychopharmacologist out of Columbia University, who delved deeply into the roots of addiction.

“Most people think that A+B=C,” said Vanderschaeghe.

“You have people using drugs then this is the behaviour you will see, but its actually much deeper than that – you need to look at the dose they are taking, the route of administration, are they smoking or injecting meth, snorting or injecting cocaine, smoking or eating marijuana?

“The user experience is also included in how much are they using, or have they been awake for two days doing it – are you using alone, are you using outside, are you having to hurry because you’re using in a place you shouldn’t be using?

“Using drugs overwhelmingly doesn’t necessarily mean addiction and a lot of times people think that drug users should just quit using drugs but the reality is it’s never that simple, you can’t take away a coping mechanism and not put another in place.”

Vanderschaeghe stated by judging people and making people feel bad about their drug use it is in turn forcing them to lie to you, which would increase the stress around the issue and actually cause them to use more.

“By confronting them then you are forcing them to lie and not share their full life with you because at this point then you are being toxic, so you need to be there to support people,” she said. “Our job as a harm reduction agency is to build relationships so that people trust us and at least there is one person in their world who supports them and won’t nag them - our job is to be there for them.

“We motivate them to be safe around drug use and sexual health, but that comes second to building that trust with our clients.” jswan@reddeerexpress.com

Lifestyle Lacombe veteran honoured with national recognition

BY SARAH MAETCHE Red Deer Express Five years — five years is enough time for governments to change, families to bloom and long enough for a life to completely change.

Five years is exactly how long Ralph Prins, 95, spent serving in the army during the Second World War. He recently received a certificate of recognition from the Government of Canada for his five years of service with the Dutch Army.

Prins returned from his service in the Caribbean on Jan. 22nd, 1946, exactly five years to the day from when he left Lacombe.

“It was right up to the hour,” said Prins. “The same train that came from the west, that’s when I left and when I came back.”

Prins was born in Holland. At 19 years of age, he fled the country in 1939, in anticipation of the German invasion as threats of war in Europe became heightened. He came to Canada and landed in Lacombe, not to avoid conscription, but to avoid the war itself.

By the time Prins actually arrived in Lacombe, the Second World War had begun.

The Dutch Army was actively recruiting some of the young men who had come to Canada as immigrants into the army.

Prins was quick to enlist and was soon on a train heading to Stratford, Ontario for basic training. He left Lacombe on Jan. 22nd, 1941.

With around 300 recruits, Prins completed his basic training and was quickly deployed as part of the Princess Irene Brigade.

Some recruits ended up being stationed in England or in South America. Prins was deployed to Curaçao, an island in the southern Caribbean Sea, just north of the Venezuelan coast, to defend the oil refineries in the area.

Curaçao and the neighbouring island of Aruba were thought to be strategic targets for the Germans, as oil refined in the area was supplying the Allied efforts in Europe.

British troops were also stationed on the small island. Eventually the Americans joined the Dutch and British after the attack on Pearl Harbor in the end of 1941. Before that, the outlook was grim.

“Everybody thought, now we can see the end,” he said after the Americans joined the Allied forces. “There were lots of people then. It changed everything.”

Such was the case for Prins, who was on guard duty on Feb. 17th, 1943, when a German submarine did creep up to the island in an attempt to damage the oil refineries.

“That night I spotted a submarine,” said Prins.

“You could see it in the search lights.

So we phoned them up.

We said that we spotted a submarine, just off the coast.

“He said ‘Oh, yeah and how many chimneys did it have?’ And I said, ‘There were no chimneys on the boat,’ He asked a couple of stupid questions like that you know and then hung up.”

Prins and his fellow guard were told to stop playing around and get back to work, as the area hadn’t seen any action, let alone a German submarine, for years.

Prins called three times about the submarine sitting just off shore, but his superiors still thought he was joking. After a while, his guard shift concluded and he headed to bed.

“I was sleeping, and at three o’clock, that’s when they got shot at,” he said.

“Then they believed. Before they thought it was baloney, but it was true.

“They got shot at. Not only Curaçao but at Aruba as well. Aruba was also attacked. You could see on the horizon, several flashes from the guns.”

The raid to destroy the oil facilities on the islands failed and the German submarine was successfully taken down by the Dutch shore guns before escaping.

During the war, mainly during furlough, his time off, Prins managed to travel and see many parts of the world. “It was very interesting,” said Prins of his experience. “I was a single boy so I took it with a smile.”

Prins managed to travel extensively through the Caribbean and the United States, mainly by hitching rides with the U.S. Army and Air Force.

“It was kind of interesting,” said Prins. “We made many miles on the ocean.”

As with many with the young men who joined up with the Canadian Army or British Army, each soldier had a different experience, depending where they were deployed. After the war ended, Prins returned to Holland to be discharged. It was there that he met his soonto-be wife.

Prins returned to Lacombe in 1946 and close to a year later, his bride followed, traveling on the very first ship of war brides coming from Europe to Canada.

“It was a freighter all right,” said Prins of the ship his bride traveled on. “It was a pretty good sized boat but still quite small.”

Eight war brides were on the ship, embarking on a journey to Canada to meet up with their new husbands.

Prins married his bride on April 30th, 1947 and they lived on a farm just outside of Lacombe. They were married for 60 years and raised seven kids, four boys and three girls.

Eventually Prins retired from farming and now lives in a senior facility, still calling Lacombe, the area he first set eyes on 75-yearsago, home. news@lacombeexpress.com

OPINION Brain injury awareness June marks Brain Injury Awareness Month – a time when organizations work hard to bolster both awareness and funding for programs and research.

As there are many months designated to a number of illnesses, diseases and conditions, there is a chance that the fact this month being set apart as Brain Injury Awareness Month could be missed by some – but as mentioned, a growing emphasis on awareness is key to prevent that from happening.

To that end, staff, volunteers and clients of the Central Alberta Brain Injury Society (CABIS) hope the public can become better informed about the complexities of brain injury. The Society has been helping individuals and families deal with the effects of traumatic or acquired brain injury since 1991 – free of charge. Brain injury can, of course, happen to anyone. And the consequences can range from minimal to critical and deeply impactful. Everyone emerges from what can amount to weeks to months to years of treatment with different results – there is marked recovery for some, and yet others can struggle to see even minimal changes.

According to the Brain Injury Society of Canada, Brain injury occurs suddenly, without warning. “In an instant life is changed, forever. Everyday we participate in activities that produce endless risks for sustaining a brain in-

jury; events include a car accident while driving to the grocery store, a fall from a bike, or a blow to the head.”

The Society also points out it is estimated thousands of Canadians incur a traumatic brain injury each year. “They will have a normal life expectancy but will require special care. A majority of bicyclists who die each year die of brain injuries. Most of the serious brain injuries can be prevented by wearing a helmet.

Brain injury affects a significant number of people each year and the numbers are reaching epidemic proportions.”

Of course, there have been strides in the treatments for brain injury – but awareness is also where things need to change in today’s societies. Locally, there are some opportunities to connect with the staff, volunteers and members of CABIS - a picnic runs June 24th at Rotary Park from 5 to 8 p.m.

Club CABIS is a social drop-in session which meets the first and third Thursday afternoon of each month between 1:30-3 p.m. as well. CABIS also operates with no government funding and must rely on donors plus grants and the generosity of the community via fundraisers - these include a silent auction set for June 19th-21st at Parkland Mall, plus the Wellness Ride which runs Aug. 15th.These means of giving are just a few ways the public can offer their support to an extremely important cause.

The real costs of informal care giving in Canada One in every three workers in Canada is assisting a chronically disabled person – many of them seniors – with transportation, household maintenance or day-to-day tasks, according to a recently released federal report.

BERNIER The 6.1 million employed workers who are providing such care, free of charge, to a family member or friend are more likely to experience interruptions at work and to arrive late or even be absent from work. Many are less available than they would otherwise be to work overtime, travel for work or advance their careers.

The impacts of informal care giving commitments are felt in the Canadian workplace and reduce productivity.

They translate into 2.2 million hours of reduced workplace time every week and cause an estimated $1.3 billion productivity loss annually, says the report.

With the anticipated growing numbers of seniors requiring care, the costs of unpaid care giving and reduced productivity will likely expand over the next two decades.

What should we do about them?

It only makes sense that employers should be the first to recognize and support informal care giving.

Some already offer flexible arrangements (e.g., compressed work weeks, work from home, unpaid and even paid leaves) to employees with care giving commitments. Not all employers are equally

supportive, and many Canadian workers with care giving responsibilities are paying the price: reduced income, career limitations and exit from the labour force.

A year ago, the federal government established the Employer Panel for Caregivers, which consulted with employers to help them find ways to better support their employee caregivers. The consultation assumed that unpaid care will remain the main source of long-term care in this country.

It found that while employer support to employee caregivers may foster workplace engagement and retention, there might not be a business case for many employers to voluntary engage in it.

In other words, moral appeal and compassion for employee care givers will not translate into a massive, spontaneous move-

ment in the Canadian workplace to address the issue.

It is becoming increasingly difficult for Canadian policymakers to ignore their own essential role – beyond that of offering limited and sporadic supports – to address the issue.

Confronted with a similar situation, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand have, in recent years, adopted national care giver strategies. At home, Manitoba and Nova Scotia are leading, but efforts across the country remain fragmented and inconsistent.

Canada can do better.

A national strategy needs integrated policy instruments to support care givers and their employers.

First, Canada’s workplace legislation, which is primarily a provincial jurisdiction, needs to ensure minimum standards to protect workers with care

giving commitments. Second, we also need a comprehensive set of financial instruments – possibly a combination of private or public programs – to better protect the workers’ incomes and their employers’ productivity losses. Third, more substantial coverage of home care, nursing care and supportive services for the disabled is an essential component that would benefit everyone.

Policymakers still need to recognize the undeniable costs of unpaid care giving. So the real question is: How should these costs be shared?

Care givers are already contributing a lot: a study estimated that if governments had to pay for care giving provided free of charge by people 45 and older in this country, it would have cost about $25 billion in 2009.

Some argue governments should compensate

care givers.

I don’t think they should.

But governments do need to ensure that while providing unpaid care giving, workers never incur catastrophic income losses or lose their jobs as a result.

Financial and in-kind supports are critical, especially when care giving commitments extend to several hours a week over a long period of time. This should be covered by public programs.

Only a coherent national strategy will allow Canadian workers looking after a spouse or relative to better focus on their work, their employers to better focus on their mission and disabled persons to get the care they need.

Support a critical part of the transgender experience

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express Sometimes Hollywood helps to shine a light on an issue that some in society would prefer not to consider.

Those going through, and having gone through, sexual reassignment surgery, are in many ways in the spotlight these days with celebrity Bruce Jenner and his transitioning process to womanhood.

Red Deer resident Dana Moran, 63, underwent sexual reassignment surgery in 2005. After years of struggle and self-doubt, he consulted with an Edmonton specialist who was satisfied Moran was eligible for reassignment.

“Being transgendered is becoming more of an open topic now, better understood and more widely known about,” she explained during a recent interview.

“If you take a step back and look at things - for a long time, being gay was not acceptable and now being gay has become much more acceptable.

“Now, trans-gender is following along that trail.

And with people like Bruce Jenner and Chaz Bono and TV shows like Transparent and Orange is the New Black, it’s putting transgendered people in the forefront and showing they often are not what the ex-

pectations of the general public may be.”

Misconceptions are plentiful. “One of the big ones is that if you are transgendered, you have to be gay.

Which actually gets quite confusing,” she said, describing situations where a partner concludes they are transgendered but that they still love his or her spouse.

“The actual orientation of who they care about hasn’t changed,” she said, adding studies have shown there are different parts of the brain that organize sexual orientation and gender orientation.

“The biggest problem with marital relationships when someone decides they are trans-gendered is the input from friends, relatives and the general public,” she said.

Other misconceptions are that once a transgender process is complete, the person, for example a man to a woman transition, will want to take up a whole new slate of female-oriented activities. Not so.

“The things you like to do remain the things you like to do.”

Regardless of the progress made about shining more light on the transgendered community, she is troubled about the violence aimed at the community in general internationally.

“It’s often not reported to the police, and that person

sometimes doesn’t want their family to know. There are in Edmonton and Calgary, LGBTQ alliances with the police departments which tend to help.”

Moran also attends events marking the International Transgender Day of Remembrance in November.

“There are services for the transgendered people that have been murdered over the past year.

“That numbers about 350 – that’s the ones that we know of,” she explained.

“These are people who have been identified as being transgendered people.

They are selectively targeted, and the killings are almost all extremely violent.”

For Moran, beginning the process included counseling, hormonal therapy and living as a woman for one year prior to the operation. Adjusting to the anatomical change wasn’t that hard. There was some post-operative recovery time during the 10-day stay in Montreal, then she was home.

Looking back, she knew as a six-year-old boy there was something different about how she felt about things. “You feel like something isn’t the same (for you) – it’s not that it isn’t right – it’s just not the same.”

It’s hard for folks to understand, she said, but

part of the problem comes from the desire many have to compartmentalize so much about life. “Everything has to fit in a box, and if it doesn’t, they don’t understand it,” she said.

“And there are so many ways that being transgendered affects people.” Some people can live the lifestyle of being transgendered but not opt for surgery, for example. For others, the desire for change is much stronger.”

At the time, there was funding available for the surgery and Moran has never regretted her decision.

“It’s a part of you. It’s like teaching a left-handed kid to write with their right hand. You can force them to do it, and maybe he will do it. But that’s not the child.”

Born in High River and raised in Edmonton, Moran recalls not liking the typical games or activities other boys seemed to like.

And as a youngster approaching adolescence, he continued to define himself more as a female.

In her early 20s, Moran said she didn’t experience much harassment growing up when a preference for being a girl was surfacing.

Home, on the other hand, wasn’t quite as smooth and Moran, who explained that she was abused during that time as well, ended up running away at one point and in a foster home.

MOVING FORWARD – City resident Dana Moran, who underwent sexual reassignment surgery about 10 years ago, said support is critical as a person makes such a personal journey.

In her early 20s, she tried to build a masculine identity. Moran even married and fathered two sons.

But although Moran, a former government worker, was meeting society’s expectations of what she should be like, it was a miserable season. The marriage didn’t last and Moran was left to figure out the next step.

These days, Moran said she has found a place of peace.

“I’m at the point where a lot of transgendered people get. And I’ve been at this point for quite awhile – I just want to be myself, go places, do things and I don’t want any problems – I don’t

want any hassle.”

Meanwhile, the Central Alberta AIDS Network Society has a support group for transgendered people.

Support groups can be a huge help, said Moran, who estimates there are about 25 people in the local area that have undergone sexual re-assignment surgery and several hundreds of others who would potentially identify as transgender.

POLICE BRIEFS ROBBERY ON GASOLINE ALLEY On June 8th, at approximately 11:29 p.m. a lone male entered the Hideout Bar in Gasoline Alley.

The male had a knife and demanded money from the employees to which they complied. When the male left the business, he sprayed pepper or bear spray throughout the upstairs office contaminating the area as well as the employees.

The male is described as being 5’ - 5’4”, dark skin with an accent. The male was wearing blue jeans with a black hoodie, ball cap and face mask.

This is the second case since 2009 in which Employment Standards has pursued charges under the Employment Standards Code. In November 2014 an employer was charged for alleged offences involving a 14-yearold worker. That case is currently before the courts.

THEFT OF ELECTRONICS FROM WAL-MART Red Deer RCMP are investigating a theft from the 67th St. Wal-Mart on May 15th.

An aboriginal man and woman left the store with a large number of electronics without paying. The woman went to the electronics department and stated she had a purchase order. The clerk gave her iPads, tablets and computers. A total of 79 items were stolen, worth $3,700.

MORE CHARGES IN HUMAN TRAFFICKING CASE A number of charges for violations of Alberta’s Employment Standards Code have been laid against three businesses operating along Gasoline Alley in Red Deer.

The charges stem from complaints originally received in 2014 from seven temporary foreign workers employed at the Econo Lodge Inn & Suites. They include failure to comply with a notice to provide employment records; obstructing an officer in the exercise of their duty by advising employees not to cooperate and/or give false statements; falsifying employment records and giving false/misleading information to an investigating officer and failure to keep employment records as required.

The charges were sworn and laid on May 27th against the numbered companies operating as Econo Lodge Inn & Suites, Holiday Liquor Store and Winks convenience store, as well as corporate directors Varinder Sidhu and Ravinder Sidhu.

Following the initial complaint and investigation that involved the RCMP, Alberta Employment Standards determined that more than $83,000 in earnings was owed to the employees. The employer subsequently paid the outstanding earnings plus more than $8,000 in Order of Officer fees. The employees involved have found other work.

The maximum penalty for these offences is $100,000 for a corporation or $50,000

RCMP attended immediately with Police Dog Services, who followed the suspect’s track to the Michener Centre area before losing the track. Police also received a number of reports that the

suspect was seen running from yard to yard in the Carter Close neighbourhood.

The suspect is described as Caucasian, in his early 20s, about 6’ or 6’1” tall with a skinny build, very defined cheekbones and no facial hair. He was wearing a darkcoloured flat brimmed hat, a dark-coloured hoodie and blue jeans.

POLICE INVESTIGATE ARMED ROBBERY Red Deer RCMP are investigating an incident where a man was robbed at gunpoint as he walked in a residential area shortly before midnight on May 23rd.

The 26-year-old Red Deer man was walking in the

left unconscious in a nearby dumpster. He regained consciousness the next morning when a waste management company emptied the dumpster into their truck.

As a result of their investigation into this incident, RCMP believe the assault and robbery may have taken place in the alley behind Albert’s Family Restaurant and Lounge just off of Ross Street and 47th Ave. RCMP continue to investigate, and are looking for witnesses who were in the area.

edges, pumps, stilettos, and high-heeled sandals could all be seen walking along Taylor Drive last Thursday afternoon. This may not be an unfamiliar sight to some who watch the path – perhaps what was the most unusual was their occupants, a group of more than 200 men.

Many of the men were clad in dresses, kilts, and even kitty suits to go with their high heels as they participated in the fourth annual Walk A Mile in Her Shoes: The International Men’s March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault & Gender Violence.

The event raised $50,000 this year in support of the 16 different programs and services offered at Women’s Outreach, which is up from last year by a little under $20,000.

“We had an increase in awareness this year, with many new teams joining,” explained Darcy Ouellet, funds development officer at Women’s Outreach. “I think the increase was likely from the event just becoming more and more wellknown.

“Programs like our domestic violence unit and our safe visitation and monitored exchange program for families have a large impact on our community and the benefits of these programs are endless.”

Ouellet explained Walk A Mile is a great opportunity for men in Central Alberta to raise awareness in their communities about the causes, effects, and remediation to sexualized violence and with the event being so fun it helps to open the lines of communication to be able to talk about gender relations and sexual violence.

“We had someone say through Twitter that there is nothing sexier than a man in high-heeled shoes raising money for women, and I hope to see the event continue to grow as it has over the last four years.”

Walk A Mile was founded in 2001 by Frank Baird in support of the Valley Trauma Centre in Van Nuys, California having been inspired by the ageold adage, “You can’t really understand another person’s experience until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes.”

Schools receive donation for breakfast and snack programs

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Red Deer Express Eleven Red Deer schools will benefit from a generous community donation of $17,500 from Build a Kid to Cure/Golf a Kid to Cure, a local non-profit agency.

The money will be used to supplement and improve breakfast and snack programs throughout the district. Administration and staff at the schools in the Red Deer Public School District communicate amongst each other and with the board to generate funds for these programs yearround. “There absolutely are needs that are out there. Schools are raising money on their own to be able to do these programs, or seeking help. The reality is that in the past, a lot of teachers were dipping into their own purses and pockets to do this.

The fact that the community has come forward is really, really valuable. We’re really able to make a difference,” said Bruce Buruma, director of community relations for the Red Deer Public School District.

“I think we start to see some of the signs that our economy faces. Families have some tough choices that they need to make, and often times that first priority is making sure their kids have food and snacks but there are some kids who are going without.

“Every parent is trying to do the very, very best that they can. They all want their kids to have these things, but sometimes that’s just not the case,” he continued.

Build a Kid to Cure/Golf a Kid to Cure is a non-profit agency that works with home builders and agencies to build homes at a

low cost, sell the home and then donate the profit towards local community projects that better the lives of children.

Chairmen of the Golf A Kid to Cure board David Wild was present at Normandeau School, where a cheque was presented to the district last week. He said that helping kids is at the heart of the organization and that they were pleased to be able to contribute to the Red Deer Public School District.

“All of our funds go to help the children of Central Alberta. (Breakfast for Learning) is a program that nationally our company has supported,” he said. “The stats show that kids who get a good, solid breakfast are going to perform well, they’re going to learn more and they’re going to get into less trouble. You put it all together and it’s a win-win situation for everyone.

Everything we do feels good because we’re giving back to a community that needs help,” Wild said.

He added, “The schools are where our children are starting and learning, and it’ll make it better for all of us down the road if they’re learning the right things and are able to really retain what they’re learning.”

Human brains require glucose to be able to perform. When children skip breakfast, their bodies have a hard time generating the fuel they need to retain information learned in school. The breakfast programs throughout Red Deer serve hundreds of children.

Snack and lunch programs are also an integral part of the Red Deer Public School District. Buruma said in addition to the

breakfast program generated through community and private donations, organizations such as Loaves and Fishes and The Salvation Army also contribute to the schools’ feeding programs with lunches and weekend meals.

“We also have over 200 lunches some days that are delivered by Loaves and Fishes.

We phone them up and say, ‘This student needs a lunch tomorrow, can you bring it in?’ It comes in with that student’s name on it, they come pick it up and then they get to eat with all of the other kids. Those

are the kinds of things that they do for us, and they’re very responsive,” he said. “The Salvation Army fills backpacks with nutritional food and sends them home with the students to tide them over for the weekend.

They may get breakfast, lunch and snacks through the week but what happens on the weekend?”

The emergence of the United Church of Canada June 10th is a very important date in Canadian and North American Christian history.

On June 10th, 1925, the United Church of Canada came into formal existence under the terms of a federal act of parliament.

It was the legal amalgamation of the Methodist, Congregational and (most of) the Presbyterian churches in Canada.

Formal and informal cooperation between Protestant churches had been taking place for a long time in Canada, particularly in western Canada.

When a frontier area was initially settled, usually the first public building to be constructed was a school.

Religious services of various denominations were often held in those early schoolhouses.

Eventually stand-alone churches were built.

However, distances were great and ministers were in very short supply.

Many fledgling communities relied on summer student missionaries, often nick-named ‘sky-pilots’ to conduct the services.

The structure and content of the worship services generally depended upon which denomination provided the student missionary.

As the communities grew, churches of the various denominations were built, particularly in the towns and cities.

DAWE However, resources remained scarce. Hence, different churches would often alternate as to which one provided the Sunday services.

Cooperation agreements were often negotiated when establishing mission fields.

For example, in Central Alberta, the rural communities of Willowdale, Valley Centre and Edwell built Presbyterian churches, while Springvale and Horn Hill built Methodist churches.

Anglican churches were built at Hillsdown and Pine Lake.

The mainstream Protestant churches were further drawn together by the great social causes of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The biggest crusade was the push for Prohibition, which came to fruition across North American in 1915-1916.

Other multi-denominational cooperative organizations included the Lord’s Day Alliance, which successfully lobbied governments to make the Sabbath a universal day of rest.

While many of the early

arrangements had been informal or regional, after the turn of the last century, communities began to formally merge their religious services.

In 1916, the local Methodists and Presbyterians created the Ponoka United Church.

By the early 1920s, more than 2,000 similar congregations had been formed across western Canada.

Meanwhile, discussions of nation-wide cooperation moved ahead.

In 1902, Rev. W. Patrick, a Presbyterian, proposed that the consideration be given to the creation of a national ‘United Church’ at the General Conference of the Methodist Church in Winnipeg.

The reaction was immediate.

Some people cheered the proposal as an idea whose time had come. Others were vehemently opposed, or else suggested that some sort of loose ‘federation’ be considered.

By 1908, the national Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregationalist church leaders had moved ahead and drawn up a draft Basis for Union. The Methodists and Congregationalists quickly ratified the proposal.

The Presbyterians had a general membership vote on it, and they too approved the document by a margin of more than two-thirds However, as discussions

and debates continued, opposition amongst the Presbyterians grew.

In a second vote, the number Presbyterians voting ‘no’ grew enormously.

Among the key dissenters again church union was the eloquent Rev. Walter G. Brown of Knox Presbyterian Church in Red Deer.

Despite the increasingly acrimonious arguments, the enabling legislation, which mainly dealt with the transfer of property

rights, had little trouble passing the federal parliament on June 27th, 1924.

Any provincial legislation that was required easily passed the various provincial legislatures as well.

Hence, on June 10th, 1925, the United Church of Canada came into legal existence.

Because of the strong opposition of Rev. W.G. Brown and others, few Presbyterians in Central Alberta joined the new church.

The most noticeable difference in Red Deer was that Leonard Gaetz Memorial Methodist Church changed its name to Gaetz Memorial United Church.

Retired Canadian forces member walks across Canada for PTSD Cpl. Kate MacEachern raises awareness

BY SARAH MAETCHE Red Deer Express Just one more step further.

That’s what wounded war veteran, army Cpl. Kate MacEachern tells herself each day during her march for awareness.

“We are over 700 kilometres into the journey now,” said during a local stop last week.

MacEachern and her team left Nipawin, Saskatchewan on May 1st to partake on a march to raise awareness for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), under the banner The Long Way Home.

“The first week we had snow and very, very cold temperatures,” she said. “But it was all what we expected walking into this.”

MacEachern was wounded in 2007 and suffered a traumatic brain injury as well as spinal cord damage.

“I had a very long recovery process due to the nature of the injury,” she explained.

“Eighteen months after the injury itself, when I was still in the physical healing process, I ended up having a stroke, which was caused by a blood clot caused by the initial injury, which left me paralyzed on the right side.

“I started the healing process again.

It was basically two steps forward, three steps back. With any significant injury, it is not always an easy road.”

In 2010, MacEachern was diagnosed with PTSD, which was something she at first ignored.

“I didn’t believe there was any way I could have PTSD due to the stigma, that we are now fighting, that it’s only a battlefield injury, it’s only soldiers that have PTSD,” she said.

MacEachern faced unrelenting guilt and almost lost her battle in 2011. Through the assistance of her friends and family, she turned things around with a new outlook and mission.

“Once I came out of it, I realized there are a lot more people like me out there,” she said. “There’s civilians, soldiers, first responders, you know anybody out there that went through something similar or something that looks entirely different.”

From a suggestion from her grandmother, to put on her boots and walk across the country from New Brunswick to bring

awareness to PTSD, and that’s exactly what MacEachern did four years ago and she hasn’t stopped since.

“There are so many people in this world that talk the talk and have suggestions and opinions,” she said.

“But very few of them are actually doing anything to try and make a difference.

“When the injury first happens, when you get out of the hospital, when you get home from overseas or you get home from a fire call, or police call, or a search and rescue call, when your gear comes off or you are back home safe in this country, that’s where your journey is just starting.

“That’s when it gets hard. That’s where people need to pay attention and realize that people need support and more than that, they need to be okay with accepting that something has changed. It’s not wrong, it’s just different.”

The most challenging part of the journey for MacEachern is dealing with emotions.

“From when you wake up, like anything, you prepare physically for what you are going to face,” she said. “You tape, you use band-aids, you do this and that — you don’t have those for your emotions. An average day is not average.

“Your heart gets broken, refilled, broken, refilled 15 times in one day. So you take that, and multiply it by 85 days and it’s a lot to carry, but it’s 100 per cent worth it.”

Through the Long Way Home, MacEachern is raising money for four organizations that involve equine therapy and post traumatic service dogs.

She is also joined along the road by the N.A.S.H. project, an organization that rescues neglected and abused dogs and horses with the vision of rehabilitating them as service and therapeutic animals.

By foot and by horse, MacEachern and her team will be crossing three provinces over three months, traveling over 2,700 kms.

MacEachern left Ponoka last Monday and was in Lacombe, then Blackfalds last Tuesday and in Red Deer on Wednesday.

Her final destination of the western Canada leg is Chilliwack, B.C. where she is expected to arrive next month.

Be mindful when parking downtown With the return of summer activities downtown parking is limited and drivers are asked to be respectful of residents in the area and to be mindful of where they park.

At the Red Deer Market, parking enforcement will increase to deter people from parking in restricted areas.

Obeying the signs and not parking on private property will help visitors avoid being ticketed or towed.

For drivers requiring disabled parking there are allocated stalls at the en-

trance of the market for pass holders.

Market-goers are also encouraged to bike or take public transit.

Every Saturday, a supervised bike corral, located in front of the Red Deer Arena, is available for cyclists visiting the market so your bicycle can be locked up while you shop.

Transit also has a dropoff location along 48 Avenue across the street from the event.

Throughout the summer, Red Deerians should be prepared for limited parking downtown and consider

alternative transportation methods.

“We have multiple events occurring at the same time, and combined with people playing tennis, going to the skate park, visiting the Red Deer Arena and enjoying the Blue Grass Sod Farms Central Spray & Play, parking is definitely at a premium,” said Barb McKee, recreation superintendent.

“We ask that motorists be respectful of residents in the area and to not park on private property or block residential driveway or garage access.”

CentreFest looks for increased community support

BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express CentreFest is in desperate need of community support to continue operating after this year; without it, they are in danger of having to axe the festival.

A GoFundMe account has been set up for donations under ‘CentreFest Needs Your Support’. Organizers hope to raise $15,000 to seed support for future festivals.

“We still need to raise some funds,” said Janice Shimek, festival director.

“This year’s festival will be a go, but what it means is that if we go without any more fundraising support, next year’s festival is not going to be in a very good financial position.

“Funds that should be set aside for 2016 – we will have to use all of those funds for this year’s festival, which is not something that we want to do.”

This year’s CentreFest will take place July 25th-26th in downtown Red Deer.

She added as Central Alberta’s largest street performer’s festival, CentreFest brings a little adventure to the City.

From sword swallowers to gut-busting comedians to fire breathing acrobats, this festival is an event that nearly 30,000 people witness every year.

“We get numerous comments from people every year who have come to the festival and bring their families down that there is nowhere else they can go throughout the year and it doesn’t cost them a

small fortune,” said Shimek.

“We thought maybe we should look at something where individuals who have enjoyed CentreFest – if they want to see the festival continue, maybe they would consider donating that $5, $10 or $20.

“We have had individuals who have donated $50 because they said they absolutely love it.”

She added if Red Deer lost the festival, it would be really unfortunate.

“This is a one-of-a-kind festival – you do not see these performances anywhere else,” she said.

“I think anytime we can have arts and culture in our community it is a good thing. I think we need to foster the arts and we don’t do that enough.

“To lose a festival like this would be really sad for the community as a whole,” she added.

CentreFest invites the community, businesses and other organizations to partner with CentreFest to continue to produce this spectacular event for decades to come, she said.

Whether it’s $1 or $1,000, every bit helps, Shimek said.

Meanwhile, Dylan Brown, owner of local tattoo shop Art and Soul Tattoo is auctioning off three $100 gift cards besides donating personally to the cause as well, said Shimek.

AHS launches ‘Patients First Strategy’ Patients and families must be welcomed partners within their health care teams, and be engaged in improving and managing their own health and wellness, according to an Alberta Health Services (AHS) strategy paper, released this week.

The Patient First Strategy, developed following consultations with Albertans, identifies priority actions needed to further embed the principles of patient- and family-centred care in a consistent and standardized way throughout the organization.

“Patient- and family-centred care is about putting the experiences, priorities and trust of patients and families first,” said Vickie Kaminski, AHS president and CEO. “There are already many examples of excellent patient- and family-centred care practices across AHS and our partner health care organizations.

“With the Patient First Strategy, AHS is taking another step toward establishing a culture of com-

passion, caring and collaboration, and ensuring that this occurs in every AHS health care encounter.”

Sarah Hoffman, minister of health, said the Patient First Strategy represents a responsive approach to health care delivery across the province.

Priority actions outlined in the strategy will empower patients and families to be active members of their health care teams by encouraging them to ask questions and raise concerns, and while respecting patient and family values, needs and preferences.

It will also improve communications at all levels to ensure care plans are fully understood by all parties and pertinent patient information is shared among all members of the care team and enhance a team-based approach to care that provides patients and families comprehensive and seamless health care experiences.

“Research shows that a patient- and family-centred approach to care reduces the length of time patients

spend in hospital, improve patient experiences, and lead to better patient outcomes,” said Deb Runnalls, co-chair of the Patient First Steering Committee.

Patients and their families; AHS staff and physicians; and AHS health care partners and stakeholder groups — including the Aboriginal Wisdom Council, Health Advisory Councils, the Children and Youth Advisory Council, and Strategic Clinical Networks — provided input into the Patient First Strategy through formal and informal feedback sessions and surveys.

Kaminski pointed out there are many AHS facilities who have fully embraced the principles of patient- and family-centred care.

Local student lands gold at Skills Canada Competition

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Red Deer Express École Secondaire Notre Dame Grade 12 student Eric Koster recently beat out competitors in the National Skills Canada competition for gold in his category of secondary electrical installation.

Since Koster won gold, if he is able to do the same next year at a post-secondary level, he will be sent to Abu Dhubai, United Arab Emirates for an international competition. He swept golds in his category for Regional and Provincial competitions for two years in a row.

“I really like just seeing the finished product, and knowing that you did a good job. It’s so satisfying. Another thing is with the circuitry, because you can’t really label wires that well, when the item finally turns on you know you did it right. It’s like all the pieces in the puzzle come together,” Koster said.

“The main reason I decided to try for Skills again this year was because last year I went through to provincials and I wanted to do it again. I needed a bit more training so I apprenticed over the summer and did some work training after school this year.

“It ended up working out pretty well for me.”

Skills competitions consist of various trade and technology categories in which secondary and post-secondary students compete to finish tasks in an allotted amount of time. The events occur regionally, provincially, nationally and internationally to promote youths in trade and

In national competitions like the one Koster competed in, over 500 students from across Canada are present, with over 40 categories. The goal of the competitions is to provide a hands-on, practical experience and to raise awareness of the trade and technology fields in the community.

For Koster, provincials were seemingly easy, but he rose to the challenge of the national competition and came out on top.

“For provincials, what they do is give you an empty three-sided booth, with a workspace that extends out. In the booth, you have to put up a panel, wire some residential things and some commercial things – that’s where the conduit comes

in. It wasn’t that hard, and way easier than nationals,” Koster explained.

“At nationals, they gave us the same time limit as provincials, but with double the workload so it got a little rushed near the end. We did the panels, a heater and a four-way switch, which is a bit of a step up. It’s not that complicated. For the boxes, there is only one way you can do it and you can’t go over your wire cells, and a lot of kids went over their wire cells because they didn’t take the time to figure it out.”

He said although there is pressure, he felt confident because once he got into his work he maintained a focus. As well, Koster had the previous experience of grabbing the gold at provincials last year,

so there was confidence in his work.

Koster said one of his biggest inspirations is his teacher, Mr. Leigh Smithson.

“My teacher probably influenced me the most. He put a lot of effort into making his class fun and trying to get kids to participate. It was really hands-on, there wasn’t a lot of book work in comparison to most classes. He really understood what he was teaching, and we weren’t just reading about it or watching him do tasks. That helped a lot.”

If Koster is able to reach the national level competition next year, and is successful in placing first in his category, he will be invited to travel to Abu Dhubai for an International Skills World Competition.

In the event Koster is successful, he would receive approximately $100,000 for international travel to three countries for competition training, as well as a personal instructor for a year to help him develop his understanding of European electrical standards. “The thing is, if you’re going to worlds it’s all European, so you have to do 240 volts, instead of 120. The international standard is European, so you’ve got to learn all the European codes and how their stuff works because it’s all in different voltage. You’re switching would be different – it’s interesting. Your wire sizes and everything are different.”

Currently, Koster is working towards his apprenticeship. He hopes to attend Red Deer College next year to complete the apprenticeship and receive his journeyman ticket for his trade. kmendonsa@reddeerexpress.com

DISCOVERY CANYON OPENS Discovery Canyon opened for the season this past weekend.

This year the opening was delayed by a week to complete maintenance and repairs.

This favourite summer destination is located in the River Bend Golf and Recreation Area, and is the perfect place for cooling down on a hot summer day.

It includes a natural river-fed bubbling stream used for tube floating, there is also a spray pool and a small beach area. The River Bend recreation site also has picnic tables, a playground area and a concession stand, and washrooms for public use.

Tubes for floating down the stream are available for rent with a small deposit.

Weather permitting, Discovery Canyon is open until the September long weekend. As a note to users, the water used is untreated river water and the area is unsupervised with no lifeguard on duty.

To access River Bend recreation area, use the detour route on Range Road 271. The regular access road 272 is closed for construction.

CITY INSPECTING BACK LANES FOR VIOLATIONS Back lane grading is underway and residents are asked to remove any personal structures that are encroaching onto City property.

From spring until September, crews grade 235 km of gravel back lanes to ensure the condition and elevation remains at design standards.

Re-grading back lanes is necessary to maintain adequate drainage to prevent potholes and allows crews to identify spots in need of repair. Back lanes are access points for underground utility lines, emergency access, garbage pick-up and provide access to residential lots.

by Mark Weber dition of back lanes and issuing notices to homeowners with items on City property. The notice will include a deadline to correct the violation and non-compliance could result in a fine.

Common back lane violations include structures such as sheds, garbage enclosures, fences, garages and paved driveways that extend onto City property; materials dumped in the back alley such as sod, dirt or gravel; overgrown trees or shrubs that overhang into the back lane less than 13.5 feet high.

“We want homeowners to look in their back lane to ensure no materials, trees, shrubs or structures are extending past their property line,” said Greg Sikora, manager of public works.

“Anything that is dumped or extends in the back lane makes it difficult or impossible for equipment to drive back there, can cause water pooling, impede drainage ability, cause potholes and ultimately decreases the functionality of the lane.”

Landowners who are not sure where their property line ends should contact a licensed land surveyor for a Real Property Report.

RDC STUDENTS AMONG NATION’S BEST Red Deer College Trades and Technology students took home two gold and a silver medal at the 21st Skills Canada National Competition earlier this month.

The bubbly sound of laughter and giggles echoed high above the ninth annual Central Alberta Children’s Festival, which was held downtown in Recreation Park this past weekend.

With as many as 6,000 people gracing the gates of the majestically transformed park each year, the event is truly a wonderland for children of all ages.

Organized by Family Services of Central Alberta, the festival aims to provide a safe and affordable event in which families can grow, learn and play together.

Executive Director of Family Services of Central Alberta (FSCA) Judy Scott explained the festival was founded on the principle of helping families to find the time to play together in an increasingly busy world.

“We as a family services agency see families struggling to take the opportunity to engage, play, connect and have fun – life is so busy and we’ve really become a 24/7 society even more so over the last nine years that we’ve been doing this.”

The diverse multi-cultural tents also widen horizons and enrich the lives of children through artistic activities.

Local organizations work together in partnership with the festival to host as many as 40 event tents which creates an atmosphere of performers, artists, businesses, service clubs and cultural groups coming together to provide a place for children to be children regardless of their social or economic circumstances. jswan@reddeerexpress.com

ENTERTAINMENT The Vat features ‘prog’ rock-styled tunes with Bend Sinister

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express Known for wielding a penchant for ‘infectious melodies mixed with soaring guitar and crushing B3 organ’, Bend Sinister plays The Vat on June 15th.

Their latest disc, Animals, was released in early 2014.

And the couple of years prior to that were steady with the release of their American debut Small Frame. During that time, their touring brought them to such events as Canada Music Week and Breakout West.

“We did a pretty big year of touring through Canada, the U.S. and we also did part of Europe with that album (Animals), and now we are in writing mode – working on new material for a new release,” explained singer/ keyboardist Dan Moxon.

A swing through Europe also saw the guys opening for a Los Angeles-based band, and the response to Bend Sinister was extraordinary. “Here, it’s harder for something to catch on if it’s different. But I’d love to go back there and find a label for more representation.”

Meanwhile, it’s good to be home and focusing on crafting material for coming projects.

“This year is a bit of a year off from heavy touring, and we are just sort of playing a few shows and more focusing on the writing and rehearsal aspects of things; hanging out three or four times a week to write new songs.” The next project will hopefully drop by spring or summer of 2016.

Animals was produced

by Grammy-nominated Joe Marlett at Signature Sound in San Diego. There’s not a dull moment to be found anywhere, as the guys

swing from shades of various genres seamlessly. It’s strikingly original to be sure. Of course, there are more conventional moments that work well – You Remind Me courses along effortlessly in fine, polished pop/rock fashion, and Through the Week begins as a relatively simple but compelling ballad, building in momentum throughout.

But for the most part, the blending in of other structural elements throughout the project, musically speaking, makes for quite the sonic experience.

Moxon describes Bend Sinister as a kind of pet project for him since his high school days. “We really got going and started rehearsing around 2000.

“We really started touring Canada in 2005 when we put out our first real full-length album,” he said. “We just kept going with it – there’s been a revolving door of players over the years but the line-up we have currently has been there for the last few records.”

As pointed out in the band’s bio notes, Moxon’s ‘soft-spoken and warm demeanor belie the frenetic stage antics and vocal gymnastics that have made him one of the most unforgettable front men in the Canadian indie scene.’

His songwriting draws from a wealth of influences. And the rest of the band is just as dynamic. Rounding out Bend Sinister are drummer Jason Dana, guitarist Joseph Blood and bassist Matt Rhode.

Although often categorized as a ‘prog’ band, the group strives to be more than just guitar solos and technique.

“I think ‘prog rock’ is too specific – it really type-

For the next CD, Moxon said the guys are aiming to be a bit more adventurous by bringing in a number of guests to collaborate with.

“We want to bring in other people and write a batch of 30 or so songs and get them down to the best 12 – it’s about getting out of your comfort zone a little bit and having friends come in and write with us.”

Ultimately, Moxon rel-

ishes the recording experience. “By the time you are in the studio, you have a pretty good sense of the song. So it’s really fun to see how it will all fit together,” he said. “You get that gratification of being able to layer it, and put it all down.”

Fratters to feature the Classy Chassys June 13th

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express There’s rockabilly and then there’s what’s known as ‘hard rockabilly’. And that’s precisely the style that Saskatoon band the Classy Chassys serve up via their latest EP Rebel Heart.

The guys are touring western Canada with their ‘white hot brand of rockabilly madness’, and are set to perform at Fratters on June 13th.

Fans will love the cuts from Rebel Heart, and those who have never heard the band before could very well be blown away from the fired-up energy that explodes through the speakers. With Class opens the project in true, driving rock/rockabilly fashion.

The title track follows with a bit of a mellower tempo, but still coasts along with an engaging, sunny 50s kind of feel.

But the Classy Chassys’ are by no means trying to copy the folksier rockabilly sounds of the 1950s.

This is a gutsier, tougher, leaner sound – absolutely unique within the myriad of sound-alike pop treacle hitting the airwaves currently in abundance.

Ultimately, the goal is to tap into a few of those old-style sensibilities of rockabilly to be sure. But as mentioned, it’s more of a foundation than a defining label. Indeed, the Chassys’ influences of rock and roll, punk, blues, jazz and more combine to create a high energy, hard-hitting sound.

They cite influences as diverse as the Stray Cats, B.B. King, Meat Loaf and

Green Day to The Beatles, Roy Orbison, Billy Joel and the Blues Brothers.

And with an emphasis on an explosive live show, guitarist/singer Matt Joyal, upright bassist Dan Neumeier, saxophonist Kenny Martelli and drummer Luke Saretsky prove that this ‘just ain’t 50s music anymore’.

“We all basically met in high school,” said Saretsky, discussing the band’s formation. The members had all been playing in other bands prior to teaming up as the Classy Chassys in 2007. “Matt, Kenny and Dan all had a band throughout high school, and we kind of formed this one afterwards.”

Elements from those other band experiences were blended into the defining tones of the Classy Chassys, including the overall driving rock feel. “We still have those classic rock elements.”

Meanwhile, the sounds of rockabilly certainly have their charms, what with the big double bass and intrinsic energy that pretty much just defines so much of their tunes.

“Looking back to Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley – they had those same kinds of roots, right? So this brings back some of those original elements of rock.”

After releasing their debut CD Ain’t No Thang in 2013, the Chassys joined forces with Danny Craig of Default to produce Rebel Heart .

“We met up with Danny Craig through our friends in One Bad Son,” he said.

They headed off to Vancouver last summer for some recording sessions,

Joining forces with Craig proved to be a smart move on the Chassys’ part, as the resulting EP showcases not only the rockabilly influence but also captures the urgent rock feel they were aiming for.

Taking the songs on the road has been a blast as well. “We try to bring a really high-energy show – we always say if you aren’t breaking a sweat onstage, you aren’t trying hard enough.”

Saretsky’s own musical aspirations came along quite early; he has quite a legacy of musical appreciation and performance in his

own family. Early country leanings later broadened to a penchant for rock.

With the Classy Chassys, he’s certainly found his niche. “We want people to hear a new, fresh sound,” he explains of the guys’ shows with brim with originality. “We want to bring a new style of rock. We hope people will come out to dance, party and just have a great time.”

The band will also be joined by Gunner & Smith for the Red Deer show.

After spending much of last year on the road with almost 100 shows across Canada and the U.S., Saskatoon’s Gunner & Smith frontman Geoff Smith is gearing up to tour as a solo artist.

Starting in 2010 as a solo project by Smith, the band evolved into a multi-

member indie country rock ensemble described as one that, “Traverses the rocky line between post-prairies balladeering and gritcovered rockers for those given to heavy highway drives and long, expansive thoughts.”

Gunner & Smith fluctuates between full band and a solo endeavor; and after releasing a couple EPs they released their first full-length CD He Once Was a Good Man in February 2014. As pointed out on the group’s web site, much of the credit for Gunner & Smith’s success can be given to lead singer/man-

“2014 was all about trying to get our album out to as many people, in as many places as we could,” he said. “We are hoping to take what we’ve been learning from this last year and put it into our new album.”

Singer Olivia Smith performing in City show

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express Former Red Deerian and gifted vocalist Olivia Smith will be performing in the City June 12th at the First Christian Reformed Church.

The concert begins at 7 p.m.

“I am coming to Red Deer for a concert to help with sponsorship for my first opera this summer, and also for a tour to New York,” said Smith, adding that admission to the concert is by donation, and any help would be appreciated.

At 16 years of age, Smith already has a spectacular voice. And with a terrific opportunity before her with Opera Kelowna, her future as a powerhouse singer seems to be that much more of a sure bet. Smith and her family relocated to Kelowna from Red Deer last summer. The decision

to move there followed a holiday to the city, and a meeting with Kelowna singing instructor Alexandra Babbel, a world-renowned soprano.

“I sang for her, and there was role in the opera Le Nozze Di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro),” recalls Smith.

Babbel was impressed with what she heard following Smith’s audition to become a student, and she offered Smith a role of Barbarina in the production which runs this Aug. 14th-15th.

In the meantime, Smith has already been sharing her gift with the Kelowna community via Opera Kelowna via events such as Christmas and Valentine’s Day concerts.

Smith is well-known to local audiences here in Red Deer, having performed with Central Alberta Theatre, the Kiwanis Music Festival and various other community events as well.

Her voice is indeed magical, and from

the time she was about seven years old, she knew that she wanted to be a performer. For about eight years, she studied with Cheryl Valentine in Red Deer. And interestingly, she first had set her sights on country singing.

But her parents wanted her to pursue classical training to begin with.

Over time, she grew to love the genre, and today, it’s clear that studying classical music has provided her with a foundation that opens doors to nailing any number of styles.

Another highlight this spring will be that aforementioned trip to New York City that Babbel has planned for several of her students. Performances there will include shows with the Brooklyn Children’s Choir. CAT presents annual one-act play festival

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express It’s that time of year again for local fans of community theatre to gather for Central Alberta Theatre’s annual one-act play festival, running June 11th13th and 18th-20th at the Nickle Studio. Curtain for the performances is at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are available at the Black Knight Inn Ticket Centre or at the door.

Another new feature this year is a presentation of local visual art which will be on display in the Community Savings Studio and in the lounge – gallery doors will open at 6:30 p.m.

Adding the works of art enhances the festival ‘feel’ of the overall event, organizers say.

As with past years, the

one-act festival is defined by its sheer variety in terms of the types of plays offered, said Maureen Sak, administration and production manager for Central Alberta Theatre.

“It’s basically several small ‘bites’, because they are all very short plays,” she said, adding that they average about 10 minutes each.

“One of the things is that often, because the plays are short, there is a lot of ‘punch’ to them” she added. “I think that’s because when you do something in such a short period, it has to be vivid and ‘right there’.”

Another plus this year is that two of the plays have been written by local residents – Sharon Lightbown and Lorraine Stuart, she said. “We ask everyone

(with CAT) every year if they would like to submit something that they have done – I would love to see it eventually get to a point where it’s all local material.”

She also pointed out that there are quite a few new young actors coming onboard this year, which is good to see within the CAT community.

Meanwhile, play highlights this year include The Secret Origin of Mojo Man, which was written by Walter Wykes and is being directed by Anya Paulsen.

The play explores the concept of hidden super powers. According to Wikipedia, Wykes is known for writing intense roles and dark subject matter.

dreamlike or nightmarish atmosphere that reflects the sometimes senseless nature of the modern world.”

The First Fireworks was penned by Alex Broun and is being directed by Laura Geelen. It’s about the special shared events that ultimately bind us together.

Often referred to as ‘the Shakespeare of short plays’, Broun has been described as the world’s most performed 10-minute playwright, with more than 100, 10-minute plays produced in over 1,500 productions in more than 40 countries around the world. And according to Wikipedia, his plays have been translated

into many languages.

Crazy Convo was written and directed by the aforementioned Lightbown, and illustrates how what seems like the simplest communication can indeed go wonky.

Chocolate was written

by Frederick Stroppel and is being directed by Deb O’Brien, and explores what a person can communicate with just one word.

And as mentioned earlier, A Few Bucks Short was written by Lorraine Stuart, who is directing the piece as well. It’s about how harmless pranks aren’t always so harmless after all.

The Save was written by Dano Madden and is being

directed by Craig Scott.

A mysterious stranger comes to watch a little league baseball game and interrupts two moms who are cheering – but who is he, and why is he there?

According to DanoMadden.com, the synopsis also reads, “Worried for their children’s safety, the women try to have the stranger removed, only to realize that the game they take for granted offers peace of mind and simple reassurance to this troubled war veteran.”

‘Fall City Fall’ to play Slumland Calgary’s Fall City Fall are hitting the road with Edmonton’s Slum Lord for the ‘No Parents, No Rules Tour’ that will see them embark across Canada from B.C. to Quebec in support of their latest album, 2013’s Victus.

They will also be promoting new material from their follow-up set to be released later this year. They play Slumland Theatre here in Red Deer on June 18th.

The band also plans to give fans exclusive free download cards during the tour at the door of each concert for a new single that will be heard only live and later released online.

“There have been a lot of hardships within the past year for us as a band, but they’ve helped us grow and put us in the right mindset,” said vocalist Keenan Pylychaty.

Like most bands, Fall City Fall began humbly in 2008 as a small project between three best friends in their hometown of Calgary.

With duel-vocalists, Nathan Zorn and

Pylychaty leading the pack, guitarist Jordon Storey, drummer Nathan Pope and bassist Andre Urquidi have mastered their crafts, complimenting the vocals with technical riffs and hard-hitting melodies.

Picking up steam, they began to collect a loyal fan base as they continued to play shows for friends and family.

They quickly became known for their energetic performances and continued to book shows all over Canada.

Releasing their first EP, 1629, in 2010, the band had finally created the finely-tuned, perfected sound they had been searching for. Revealing their blend of low growls, mid-screams and clean vocals, they had married progressive, hardcore and alternative to form a subgenre of metal that leaves crowds speechless in the best way.

Hungry for more, they delivered the Dead Saints EP, solidifying their spot as one of the most prolific hardcore bands to hail from Calgary.

Organizers gear up for ALS fundraising walk

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express The annual Red Deer Walk for ALS is set for June 20th at Great Chief Park.

Those interested in taking part are encouraged to head down for registration at 9 a.m. with the walk to kick off at 10 a.m.

Funds raised will go toward client support services in Alberta and national ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) research.

According to the ALS Society of Alberta, ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease) is a progressive neuromuscular disease in which nerve cells die and leave voluntary muscles paralyzed. Everyday, two or three Canadians die of the disease.

ALS can strike anyone. It most often occurs between the ages of 40 and 70 but can also occur in older and younger adults, and rarely in teenagers. ALS is usually fatal within two to five years of diagnosis.

The symptoms and the area of the body first affected can vary from person to person.

Typically ALS involves muscle weakness, fatigue, wasting, stiffness, loss of tone, cramping, twitching, and hyper- and hypo-reflexion. The onset of the disease may occur in nerves associated with muscles of the upper or lower limbs, the throat or upper chest area.

In rare cases, the muscles involved in breathing are first affected. These symptoms can result in decreased coordination in the hands, tripping and falling, weight loss, and difficulty swallowing, speaking or breathing.

The upcoming walk marks the 12th annual, said Michelle Parker, co-chair along with Deborah Hansen of the annual Red Deer Walk for ALS. About 250 attended the event last year.

And it’s proven to be a tremendous success. Parker said that over the past several years, in the neighbourhood of $100,000 has been raised at each walk.

That goes a long ways in both promoting awareness about ALS and in providing additional funding towards research into finding a cure.

Of course, awareness of ALS reached unprecedented heights with the incredibly popular Ice Bucket Challenge last year, which saw people from all walks of life have an ice-cold bucket of water poured on their heads in a bid to raise funds for ALS research across the globe.

“Communities came together for a com-

mon cause without even being emotionally attached to it – they just jumped onboard and realized how important it is.”

In 2014, more than 260,000 Canadians dumped a bucket of ice over their heads and made a donation through the Ice Bucket Challenge.

It’s was also important as knowledge of the disease in general isn’t always very well known. And as generations come and go, fewer people know who Lou Gehrig – the famed baseball play who died of the disease in 1941 – even is.

“The Ice Bucket Challenge helped to grow awareness – people were talking about it more than ever, and people who have never known anyone affected by ALS were talking about it,” said Parker.

Meanwhile, according to ALS Society

of Canada, it’s a costly disease with direct and indirect costs of between $150,000 $250,000 over the course of the illness.

Funds raised in the Red Deer walk also support those in the nearby region with ALS as well. “We do have families that come from Three Hills, Drumheller, Delburne and Rocky Mountain House so we are stretched right across the central area of the province.”

Parker first got involved with the ALS Society about 12 years ago. A friend’s mother had passed away from ALS, and at the same time, Parker found she had some extra time on her hands that she wanted to devote to a community cause.

“My friend said, ‘Would you be interested in helping us with the walk?’ I said sure no problem. And I’m still here,” she added

with a laugh.

“The reason for it is that I’ve met so many families who are just so special. If you go to the walk, you are usually either a family member who has lost someone to ALS or you know someone who is currently going through it.”

There is a powerful sense of connection amongst those who gather each year for the event, she said. “You don’t even have to say it – you just feel it.” Besides the fundraising part, it’s also really a wonderful opportunity for folks just to get together and enjoy the day. “We just want families to know they aren’t alone. We try to build a real sense of community.”

Could calcium pills really be killing us?

Is there anything sacred anymore? For years researchers have stressed that people are not getting sufficient calcium to build strong bones and prevent osteoporosis (brittle bones). But now a research report claims that calcium supplements increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Nevertheless, a largely unknown vitamin can prevent this tragedy.

Dr. Ian Reid and his colleagues at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, studied 14,000 women who were taking 1,000 mg (milligrams) of calcium daily.

They report in the British Medical Journal that these women showed a 31% increased risk of coronary attack, stroke and death.

This means 14 extra heart attacks, 10 more strokes and 13 more deaths over a two- to five-year-period

Why does this happen?

Dr. Reid says that people look on calcium supplements as a natural remedy.

But that is not the case as the supplement has a different effect on the body than dietary calcium. His studies show that when people take calcium pills, their blood calcium level shoots up for four to six hours to the top end of the normal range. This may result in calcium being deposited in coronary arteries. It does not happen with

dietary calcium since food is slowly absorbed.

This is shocking news as, unlike some supplements, there’s never been a major controversy about taking calcium. So should North Americans stop popping calcium pills?

Not so quick, says Dr. Dawson-Hughes, director of Tuft’s University Bone Metabolism Laboratory, in Boston. She points out that there were 143 heart attacks in the calcium group and 111 in the placebo group not taking this supplement. Not a huge difference.

Hughes adds that the most glowing error was not including studies where calcium was taken along with Vitamin D. For instance, the Women’s Health Initiative, a major New England study, showed taking calcium along with

Vitamin D had no effect on the risk of heart attack or stroke. According to Dr. Dawson-Hughes, on no occasion should calcium be taken without also taking Vitamin D, as this vitamin is crucial to putting calcium into bone where it should be.

But does taking Vitamin D solve the problem? Not so fast again, says Dr. Kate Rheaume-Bleue, an expert on natural health remedies. In her book Vitamin K2 and The Calcium Paradox, she reports calcium must remain in the bones just as gasoline belongs in the tanks of our cars. And that there is a safe way for both sexes to take calcium supplements to prevent osteoporosis without succumbing to heart attack.

Unlike most physicians, Rheaume-Bleue says it’s not saturated fat and cholester-

ol that cause heart attacks.

Rather, the culprit is a lack of the little known Vitamin K2. She agrees that Vitamin D is necessary for the intestinal absorption of calcium.

But once in the circulation, D lets calcium, like a raging bull, run wild, allowing it to be deposited in the heart, thus causing an increase in coronary attack.

She says Vitamin K2 fights the nation’s number one killer by putting calcium into bones and teeth where it belongs and keeps it out of arteries. For instance, if calcium enters the wall of the aorta, the largest artery that carries blood to the rest of the body, this causes increased risk of rupture and sudden death.

Most people get adequate amounts of Vitamin K1 present in leafy vegetables, green tea and soy beans.

But many lack K2 because its major source is steamed and fermented sticky soy, not an enticing breakfast meal. The second best source is cheese.

All researchers believe it’s best to get calcium from dietary sources. But if a dietary deficiency exists, don’t stop calcium supplements as it’s now possible to protect bones from osteoporosis and your heart from calcium infiltration.

Rather, make certain you take 3,000 milligrams of Vitamin D along with 100 micrograms of Vitamin K2.

It’s available in most health food stores.

Kinettes are building strong community networks

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Red Deer Express The Red Deer Kinettes offer a place for women to network with each other, become involved in community events and to develop relationships in the community.

The Kinettes are a division of Kin Canada, like the Kinsmen Club.

The members help out the Kinsmen with a variety of activities and responsibilities.

The ladies of the Kinettes are a vital part of the Kinsmen Dream Home project as well as leading their own fundraising projects.

“It’s fun just being part of the group – it’s such a great group of women. Every year there are more and more people joining. It’s fun to know that you’re doing something for your community, and helping out,” said Kinette Melissa Janes.

“One of the most fun things for me is the senior light tour we do at Christmastime.

We rent City buses and pick up seniors from lodges and manors in Red Deer and Sylvan and we take them around the City showing them the lights. Then we take them to the Westerner and serve them coffee and hot chocolate and there’s a group that sings carols for them. They absolutely love it.”

The annual lights tour is one of many community projects that the Kinettes get involved in. They are active volunteers with the Kinsmen Dream Home, dedicating their time to volunteer hours inside the dream home to greet guests, sell tickets and manage the ticket sales.

“With the Dream Home, we manage ticket sales from outside locations. We also run the download pages so that people can purchase tickets online, and then we download and send them out. It just helps the Kinsmen focus more on being out there in the community, and we do a little bit more of the background work for them there,”

explained Janes.

Recently, they celebrated an annual spring gala.

The galas vary each year with themes but never stray from being an enjoyable evening. Currently, the Kinettes have begun to take part in their biggest annual fundraising event, which is selling a 50/50 raffle to support the Central Alberta Sexual Assault Support Centre.

Janes and a fellow Kinette came together with the idea to support the much-needed service through this annual community fundraiser.

“We kind of both came to the idea of reaching out to the sexual assault centre outside of each other. We both thought of organizations that we’d want it to go to, and we both independently decided that that’s where we wanted it to go.

“As women, and as health care professionals, we think it’s really important support-wise for victims as well as educa-

tional for the whole community.”

The Kinettes are currently selling tickets for the raffle, with contact information available through reddeerkinsmen.com/ kinettes. The tickets will also be available in person during Westerner Days.

“We have a facebook group and our web site, and emails work as well. We try to be pretty responsive, and we’ve got a couple different people in charge of those things so you get a response fairly quickly,” she said.

Janes added the club is always welcoming and encouraging new members.

“It’s fun to be a part of and it’s a good way to get to know your community and the people that are interested in helping it.

You get to know people that are of a similar mindset. A lot of people know about the Kinsmen but when you say Kinettes, they don’t know what it is so we’d like that information out there.” kmendonsa@reddeerexpress.com

SPORTS Young Red Deer goalie sets sights on Rebels’ net

BY JENNA SWAN Red Deer Express The bright overhead lights buzzed softly behind the sound of hockey sticks slapping one another as skates scraped across the ice of the Penhold Multiplex.

Two teams, one clad in burgundy and the other in white hustle around the rink – both teams wear the WHL logo and both teams are full of teens from across western Canada who hope to one day wear a Red Deer Rebels jersey.

In the net for the burgundy team, standing tall at 6’4” and 174 lbs is Dawson Weatherill, 16, – an elite hockey prospect and the only Red Deer native.

Weatherill, a former Hunting Hills High School student spent the last year playing for the Notre Dame Argos in the Saskatchewan Midget ‘AAA’ Hockey League. The young recruit began playing for the elite hockey program out of Athol Murray College of Notre Dame, following a cut from the ‘AAA’ Optimist Chiefs prior to the 14/15 season.

Following his cut and having been on the Rebels’ radar for quite some time thanks to the team’s goaltending consultant, Taylor Dakers, it was arranged for Weatherill to join the Notre Dame Hockey Program, one which the Rebels felt would be suitable for one of their top goalie prospects.

The young WHL draft pick’s journey began with the Rebels when Dakers noticed a particular skill set matched with a menacing size while working with the young athlete out of World Pro Goal – a cutting edge training facility in Calgary focused on making goaltenders more efficient.

“I’ve worked a lot with Taylor and World Pro to become a whole new goalie over the last couple of years - they’ve given me a brand new style and one that fits my size and that helps me be able to play the game I want to be able to play.”

Dakers took an interest in the young prospect and along with the Rebels staff watched as he honed in on his skills.

Weatherill was later drafted in the 2013/14 season and invited to last year’s prospect camp, making the camp over this past weekend his second.

“A few weeks before the draft they started to show some real interest in me as an athlete and it came around to the draft and I was selected and we’ve been in touch with one another ever since,” explained Weath-

The program at Notre Dame is recognized as one of Canada’s leading hockey development programs, with dynamic integrated programming which focuses on high performance training, specialized instruction, fitness, mental preparedness, and virtue-based character formation as well as academic accountability.

Weatherill said he was thrilled to have had the opportunity to play for the Argos, who produced a number of NHL players including Vincent Lecavalier, Brad Richards, Jordan Eberle and Barry Trotz –

head coach of the Washington Capitals.

“We’ve kept an eye on him and really watched him fill out since his last year of bantam,” explained Dakers. “His stance and the way he moves have vastly increased and we saw him take the necessary steps to improve his game.

“We want him as our starter and I think he is going to be a key component to our team – with his size, speed, and athleticism the sky is truly going to be his limit, it’s just going to come down to how badly he wants it.”

Having grown up watching the Rebels play, thanks largely in part to his parents Brad and Michelle Weatherill – with whom he credits his love for hockey and thanks for driving the eight hours to watch him play this year – his ultimate goal is to be able to play on home ice one day. “To be able to play for such a great organization in front of my family and friends would be great - even if I didn’t live in Red Deer it would still be my top choice,” explained Weatherill. “Even if I don’t get the chance to play for the Rebels this season then I hope to be able to come back to home ice again maybe for the Chiefs if I get the opportunity.

Fresh out of the hockey academy and with the Rebels’ prospect camp wrapped up, Weatherill is off to Toronto to join 17 other elite prospect goalies at a Team Canada camp and will continue to work with Dakers year-round in hopes of suiting up in a Rebels jersey this season. jswan@reddeerexpress.com

Renegades’ coach happy with season start

Coach of the Women’s Renegades major soccer team, Paul Merigeau, used four words to initially describe the team’s first home game of the season on Sunday – “It was hot out.”

The scorching UV rays from the 27C weather left the 18 girls on the roster happy they had a multitude of water as they took on one of the best teams in their league, the Victoria Soccer Club out of northwestern Edmonton.

The Renegades battled both halves of the game but were left defeated in a 4-0 shut out at the end of the clock.

“They scored late in the first half for the first time and really ground us down in the second half,” explained Merigeau. “But they are a really good team – their top player, Heather Lund, is the top scorer in the league and she scored

two of their goals and set up the other two.”

Merigeau said although his team, which he’s been coaching since 2004 with a five-year break, didn’t win the game he was thrilled with how the young team performed.

“The girls played well and we did score a goal but unfortunately it was called back for offside,” he explained.

“I’m quite happy with how the season is going and excited to see how the team comes together.”

It hasn’t always been easy for Merigeau to field a team but the dedicated coach spent the winter recruiting players and feels he is ready to help the team reach their full potential.

While teams such as Calgary and Edmonton have a million or more people to choose from with their surrounding cities, the Renegades are often comprised of a large breadth of players from Central

Let your individuality shine in your home decor Recently, I attended a celebration for a young friend who is graduating from high school.

It was an extremely fun evening filled with gowns and glamour and took me back a few years to my own daughter’s graduation and how proud I felt seeing her receive her diploma and how grown-up she looked in her formal wear. It reminded me of how exciting her wedding day will be – if that day is ever going to be a reality!

The hundreds of new graduates performed their grand march around the auditorium and we were treated to a view of varying dress styles and colours.

To sum up the long march in just a few words I would have to say that bodices adorned with jewels or sequins melding into flowing tulle skirts seemed to be the ‘go to’ fashion statement of the grad class of 2015.

These dresses made me sit up and take notice!

They were not the most glamorous and certainly didn’t have the massive skirts that had just brushed past but they were unique and extremely distinctive.

It was those dresses, and the guy in a tux and bare feet, which captured my attention and made me smile at these young trailblazers who used this event to let their individuality shine.

It is easy to design a home if you throw

The challenge and (I believe) higher satisfaction comes when you find that total ‘score’, that one-of-a-kind look or piece that stops you dead in your tracks and sends your imagination flying.

lated documents – not just those of the clients, but also those from the appraiser and the realtor – as the property itself must meet certain standards and guidelines.

The pre-approval process should be considered a prescreening – a first step only.

It does involve review and analysis of the client’s current credit report; it should also include a list for the client of all documents that will be required in the event that an offer is written and accepted.

Clients should also come away from this initial process with a clear understanding of the maximum mortgage amount they qualify for, along with the various related costs involved in their specific real estate transaction.

Equally important: with the completed application your broker is able to lock in rates for up to 120 days.

Why won’t a lender fully review and underwrite a pre-approval mortgage?

Lenders do not have the staff resources to review ‘maybe’ applications – they have a hard enough time keeping up with ‘live’ transactions.

The job you have today may well not be the job you have by the time you write your offer. If more than four weeks pass, all of

the documents are out of date – by lender standards – and a fresh batch needs to be ordered and reviewed. The conversion rate of pre-approvals to ‘live transactions’ is less than 10%.

It is this last point that makes it so difficult to get an underwriter to completely review a pre-approval application as a special exception.

The bottom line is that a client’s best bet for confidence is the educated and experienced opinion of the front-line individual with whom they are directly speaking - and that’s their mortgage broker.

This individual will not be the same person who underwrites and formally approves the live transaction when the time comes.

This disconnect between intake of application and actual underwriting of a live file makes having a ‘subject to receiving and approving financing’ clause in the purchase sale agreement so very important.

Perhaps the most significant factor in undermining the solidity of a client’s preapproval is the relentless pace of change of lending guidelines and policies – changes implemented not only by the federal government but also by the lenders themselves.

approval for a certain mortgage amount rendered meaningless just a few days later through changes to internal underwriting guidelines.

Often these changes arrive with no warning and existing preapprovals are not grandfathered.

It is absolutely worthwhile going through the pre-approval process before writing offers, and in particular before listing your current property for sale or accepting offers.

This will give you a good idea of your maximum mortgage amount as well as securing a rate for you. It is a worthwhile endeavour.

Just be aware that aside from the key advantage of catching small issues early and securing rates, a pre-approval is not a 100% guarantee of financing.
