Council backs zoning amendment ARNE PETRYSHEN Townsman Staff

Council got behind an zoning amendment that could eventually see a storage business opened at 300 1st Avenue South. The location is currently not zoned for that use.

amendment to the zoning bylaw to add a new use — Covered self-storage including the storage of recreational vehicles and boats to the C2, Highway Commercial Zone. The request was specific to Swanson’s property at 300 1st Ave S. It is

Council’s decision went against the city staff recommended that it not give first reading to the zoning amendment bylaw. The application comes from Kurt Swanson of KL Swanson Enterprise Ltd. Swanson was asking for an

currently designated Highway Corridor Commercial in the Official Community Plan. Swanson said the reasons behind the application are as follows: the loss of the current tenant and difficulty of replacing said tenant with a

similar business; no need for change to the building footprint; traffic disruption will not be an issue; a reduction in environmental impact; demand; market difference.

Volunteers raised over $2,700 this past weekend as part of a fundraising effort to provide relief for Nepal, which was hit by a massive earthquake in April. The Bake for the Quake sale, hosted by the Bumble Tree on Saturday, saw lots of foot traffic as people came out to buy some treats and support the cause. Tricia McLeod, who is spearheading the Nepal fundraising campaign, is still collecting donations that she will send directly to people in need in Nepal. To donate to the Nepal campaign, contact McLeod at 250-417-7655 or email at triciamcleod@shaw.ca. Wildfire risk down due to last week’s rain C AROLYN GR ANT

While there have been many more fires to this date this year than last in the Southeast Fire Centre — 47 in 2015 compared to 16 in 2014 — there is also reason for optimism. That reason is recent rainfall and no lightning. “There are a lot of factors that go into the number of fires, but one of them was that it was quite dry earlier this year and dead grass had no chance to green up because the nights were still cool,” said Jordan Turner, information officer for the Southeast Fire Centre. “But we’ve received quite a lot of rain recently and fire risk is greatly decreased. That’s why we lifted the Category 2 open burning ban last week.” Category 2 fires are those involving fireworks, burning barrels and burning waste in piles under 2 metres by 3 metres. “Right now, you’re allowed to burn as long as you take proper precautions and have the right tools on hand,” Turner said. Earlier this year, Turner said that the coming summer fire season risk greatly depended on the amount of rain received in June. “It’s hard to say whether we got enough rain and it is already drying out some. But there is more rain forecast. And no lightning makes a big difference.” There were no new fire starts in this region over the weekend.
