he Time Machine program in my MacBook Pro refused to back-up my hard drive to my Seagate external hard drive.

Since the hard drive in my MacBook Pro was 500 GB and the Seagate external back-up drive was 1000 GB I assumed that the external hard drive was full and tired of shuffling around trying to find room. I went online to check the price, size, and availability of external hard drives.

Guess who had the best price? Walmart.

Yes, Walmart here in good ‘ol Port Alberni had a sale on a Seagate two Terabyte USB 3 external hard drive for $98. I went

and bought one, came home and now had to transfer the info from the old Seagate to the recently purchased Seagate.

I unplugged the old external Seagate and plugged the new hard drive into my Mac. I then went into my applications

folder, clicked on the Utilities folder and chose the Disk Utility application and re-formatted the new drive, selecting the option for Mac OS Extended.

I then proceeded to open the Finder

window, in the sidebar I clicked on the icon for the new drive. My choice was Get Info from the File menu while I made sure that “ignore ownership on this volume” at the bottom of “Sharing & Permissions”

section of the Get Info window is deselected (unchecked). Then I chose System Preferences from the Dock.

I clicked on the Time Machine icon and slid the Time Machine switch to Off. Now it was time to copy the info from the old hard drive to the new hard drive. I went to the Finder window sidebar and clicked on the icon of the old hard drive.

I then opened a new Finder window, went to the sidebar and clicked on the icon for the new hard drive.

Now both the old and the new hard drives were side by side on my screen. Then I

simply dragged the “Backups.backupdb” from the old hard drive to the new hard drive. I entered my administrator name and password and OK to start the copying process.

After the copying was finished I opened the Time Machine preferences window. I selected the new hard drive and then clicked on Use Disk. The Time Machine back-ups will now be saved on the new hard drive. That’s it—easy peasy.

••• While we were in England we purchased two seniors rail passes for about $50 each—admittedly a bit pricey but now we could get 33.3 per cent off any train fare in England. So off we went on the wonderful English trains.

We went to Skipton for the huge all-day market and took a cruise on the canals in a long boat.

ruce Jenner, the man who became an American national hero during the 1976 Olympics, when he won a gold medal and broke a world record in the men’s decathlon event had a different kind of victory last week: he finally revealed himself to the world as a woman.

The cover and photo spread showing his new identity in Vanity Fair magazine titled “Call me Caitlyn” hit the Internet on June 1, along with a request to be referred to with female pronouns rather than male.

The media quickly honoured her wishes.

A Twitter page for Caitlyn was set up the same day and broke Barack Obama’s record for the shortest time to reach one million followers, achieving the mark in four hours and three minutes.

Not everyone reacted with kudos or acceptance though.

story is getting.

For the former I’d like to explore the reactions. For the latter, I chalk that up to Bruce Jenner being a member of the most famous reality TV family, the Kardashians, of which millions are tired of hearing about.

Considering her new name is spelled with the letter C rather than a K like the other six women she’s related to, Caitlyn may share that sentiment on some level.

I don’t watch the popular program, but I’ve been following this particular story since the media started speculating about Bruce Jenner’s gender reassignment.

Photographs taken over the last couple of years suggested that the famous athlete was taking on more of a feminine appearance through cosmetics and surgery. That was confirmed in a recent exclusive interview she had with Diane Sawyer.

Knowing Bruce Jenner as an Olympic champion since my childhood, I found this transformation intriguing. Especially since I have a friend who’s secretly been

a cross dresser for decades.

To protect his identity I’ll call him John. Married with children, John and his wife are from religious, conservative families. For that reason and others he has gone to great lengths to hide his love for dressing like a woman, restricting himself to only indulging when he travels out of town.

When he came to Kelowna a few years ago from Vancouver, my girlfriend and I met up with him at a hotel and for the first time I met his female

persona. She was lovely, and beyond happy in her beautiful dress, high heels, wig and makeup.

The transformation took hours, and during that time our friend was like a kid in a candy store, enjoying every moment of the process with our mutual pal, who helped.

His impulse to dress like a female started when he was a young boy who felt trapped in a body of the wrong gender. As a child he hid his desire to be a girl, and as an adult he has continued to

hide his cravings to be a woman. When he momentarily shared this side of himself with his wife early on in their relationship she expressed revulsion.

Not wanting to lose her, his family, or his reputation in the business

community, John has tried repeatedly to put an end to these strong feelings, but he hasn’t been able to. His secret persists and anxiety over its possible discovery intensifies.

Bruce Jenner felt these same pressures and stress, with millions watching and the paparazzi documenting as much as they could.

Becoming Caitlyn at the age of 65 and finally realizing her lifelong dream of being a woman has her now feeling like her authentic self.

“Bruce always had to tell a lie,” she explained in her Vanity Fair interview.

“He was always living that lie. Every day, he always had a secret, from morning until night. Caitlyn doesn’t have any secrets.”

Living with this decision isn’t easy though. According

to a recent U.S. National Transgender Discrimination Survey 41 per cent of trans or gendernon-conforming people surveyed have attempted suicide—a staggeringly high statistic.

I hope Caitlyn’s experience will inspire John, and anyone yearning to live their truth, to not be afraid of what others think, to do what makes them happy, and to stay strong throughout.

Sharing her story, as others before her have done, can only help to break down the barriers created by judgment and intolerance and build a foundation for the kind of respect and acceptance we all deserve as humans.

Magic and art are two things that go hand in hand, but in the world of The Unwanteds by Lisa McMann, it’s taken to a whole new level! But when he travels to the Death Farm with all the other Unwanteds, Alex is in for a surprise; there is no Death Farm. Instead, there is the magical world of Artimé.

There, children are taught to embrace creativity, and learn how weave magic into their art. But life is not all sunshine and lollypops for Alex. Bonds are hard to break, and Quill is being set up for the ultimate magical battle between brothers.

I loved the imagination used in creating the world of Artimé. I never would have been able to think of half the inventions that abound in The Unwanteds. Flying tortoises, giant ebony warriors, and fatal paperclips all play vital roles in the fight to decide the fate of Artimé. And Alex isn’t just fighting to save his life; no, he’s fighting to save imagination.

Gloria Joan Zwarych (nee Robinson) Born August 10, 1930 in East Vancouver Died May 31, 2015 peacefully in her home in Port Alberni Gloria will be most remembered for her years of teaching in Port Alberni, gardening and her love of family.

Predeceased by her parents (Thelma Freer and Joseph Robinson) and her sister Faye Tate. Gloria is survived by her brothers Don and Alvin Robinson, her children Wendy and Roger Gregoire, Wilda Zwarych, Brett Zwarych, grandchildren Tana & Rob Cole, Kirstin & Nana Lyle, Tarek Lyle, Danielle & Jonathan Emmett, Jeremy and Crystal Gregoire, Brayden Zwarych and Katie Zwarych, great-grandchildren Jory, Rylan, Holden & Zaya Cole, Austin, Rhonde & Amari Lyle, Hannah Lyle, Fiona & Joshua Emmett, Berlyn & Jules Gregoire, her great-great-granddaughter Mila Cole, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
