The Trail Historical Society has kindly offered photos and stories related to the history of Trail.

A

s the City celebrates the 90th anniversary of the Trail & District Public Library this year, both the TDPL and the Trail Historical Society are preparing for the new Riverfront Centre, which will combine both facilities into one exciting and vibrant gathering place.

In the June 1960 issue of the Cominco Magazine, the library was featured as a place of wonder, exhibition, learning, and survival.

While little information exists from early library days, we are fortunate to have the article below, offering a glimpse into the history of the facility and its impact on the community.

“Three years ago (1957), the Trail Public Library served a modest 580 registered members. Now the figure is well over 5300 and 1959 book circulation reached a record high of 81,000. Reasons for this sudden and spectacular rise in popularity are not hard to find. In 1957 the Library became public property and, early the next year, moved to spacious new quarters in the Trail Memorial Centre. Since then, business has been booming.

Chaired by Alderman Joe Palyga of Trail, today’s Municipal Library Board is spending between $5000 and $6000 for new books and well over $200 for periodicals this year.

The 20,000 volumes already on the shelves are under the supervision of Librarian Jean McCallum.

The Library dates back to the years following World War I when the Canadian Legion Building became a Victoria Street landmark.

Facilities for Legionnaires and their families included a supply of reading material. The end of World War II, however, brought new space demands and the Legion built temporary quarters for the Library near the foot of the Smelter Hill stairway. Then, in 1957, Library operations were the large, modern quarters in the Memorial Centre provided by Trail District Recreational Projects Society planners.”

At the time, the Trail Public Library was considered one of the finest facilities in BC. In just a few more years, the library will evolve once more in order to provide outstanding service to our community.

New director at gallery

FROM PAGE 1 He commuted from the village to Trail for 24 years before retiring from Cominco.

Now, he runs Joe’s Art Gallery on a 26-acre property located just outside Salmo on Highway 3.

“We’ve been open for about four years now,” said Joe. “And over 300 people have signed our guest book.

People from Switzerland sent me a letter saying it was a nice place. And I’ve had people in from Vancouver Island to New Zealand.”

Besides running his gallery, Horvath often visits VISAC, teaching watercolour pencil drawing workshops the third Saturday of each month.

The interactive sessions focus on sketching techniques, and are open to beginners, advanced artists and everyone in between.

“Doesn’t make any difference (level of art) because I have the layout for everybody,” said Horvath.

“Even if you miss something one day you can make it better the next time, that’s why it’s advancing.”

He encourages all level of talent to give the class a try, because learning how to draw gives a sense of accomplishment and boosts self esteem.

“You come in and sit down and you will learn something the first workshop,” he explained. “If you do something that was no good one year and keep coming back – you will see how far you can come (the next) year.”

The drop-in fee is $25 for a three-hour morning lesson, but Horvath donates all proceeds back

to the gallery.

“I give my time to VISAC,” he said. “Anything we make is for them, something like a fundraiser.”

Horvath’s show is the last of the season, but a first for new gallery artistic director Kristen Renn.

Originally from the U.S., she has an extensive history in art culture extending from Seattle, San Francisco and Salt Lake City.

Renn now hails from Rossland and brings youthful energy and vision to the non-profit space.

“We are in a transition of a new exhibition this week, and the passing of the torch is going smoothly,” said Renn, referring the Ursula Abresch’s retirement from the position.

“I think the VISAC has created a really good pillar and bone of infrastructure within Trail,” she said.

“Ursula has really raised the bar bringing in different, interesting exhibits. At first this was a place for people who do have an interest in the art world to collaborate and feel a sense of belonging,” Renn added.

“Now I feel they are more interested in spreading the culture instead of just maintaining it. That is my hope with the gallery – to bring in new people and support new artists as well as the established ones.”

River to remain high

Beach goers may find a little less sand to perch on at Gyro Park this weekend. And that could remain the trend this summer.

Under dry conditions, the operating agreement with the U.S., being the Columbia River Treaty and Non-Treaty Storage Agreement, call for more water to be released from the Arrow Lakes Reservoir.

Snow pack in the Columbia River Basin on both sides of the border is very low and current forecasts indicate that 2015 could be the fourth driest year on record, says BC Hydro's Jennifer WalkerLarsen.

“The current June forecast predicts the water supply for the Columbia River Basin from April to August will be about 70 per cent of normal,” she explained.

She said 2014 was an average

water year, and discharge flows from Hugh L. Keenleyside Dam and Arrow Lakes Hydro were about half of what they measure this year.

At the beginning of May, discharge rates from the dam and Arrow Lake Hydro measured 481 cubic metres per second (cumecs).

Since then discharge flows have been on the incline, with the last increase noted to be 1,104 cumecs to 1,586 cumecs from May 30 to June 2.

Higher discharge flows mean higher river levels downstream, Walker-Larsen explained.

“When combined the outflows from the Kootenay River, Columbia River levels at Birchbank are now about four feet higher prior to last weekend's flow changes.”

With another flow increase projected for Saturday, Walker-Larsen asks people to exercise caution near the shoreline.

Relay For Life walkers brave the elements to support the cause

Even with thunderstorm warnings, this year’s Relay For Life was a success, say organizers.

Jenn Smith, Community Giving Coordinator with the Canadian Cancer Society, said that although the weather wasn’t cooperating at Saturday’s 15th annual Relay For Life, teams still managed to walk and raise nearly $30,000 for cancer research.

“Right now, we are sitting at $28,809.86,” she said. “We had 14 teams out there and all but one had tents set up. So it was a great turnout as far as our participants and teams go. The weather was the bad part.”

With the rain and lightning looming overhead, some events had to be moved up to make sure everyone could participate.

“The rain held off for a bit, and everyone got to the park, but when the thunder and lightning warnings came, that cleared some people out,” she said, adding that the Luminary Ceremony, a chance for friends and family to remember those who have been lost to cancer, didn’t go quite as planned. “We didn’t get to do the full ceremony and we were really sad about that. But, we checked with the teams and we

put the luminaries out early. That way, anyone could walk along and remembers before the weather came to a head. We were happy that we could do at least that for everyone. We kept the luminaries out until the end at 10 p.m.”

The annual fundraiser has been getting smaller over its last 15 years in Trail, but Smith says the people who come out to fundraise, or just support the relayers, are invaluable to the cause.

“We were really excited to see how many people we had out, but of course, we would like to see more,” she said. “But, the people who showed were the ones who wanted and needed it to work out. We had some new teams, so there were some new faces this year, and overall, we were happy.”

Next year’s Relay For Life is already in the works, just days after Saturday’s event.

“We already have a new theme picked out for next year,” said Smith, adding that she hopes to see the event slowly grow over the next few years. “It is still being tweaked, so I don’t know if organizers want to reveal it quite yet. We are working on it right now. We are always looking forward to getting people to volunteer with us and give us new ideas to keep it exciting for the community.”

PEOPLE B.C. student’s grad dress made from old homework auctioned for girls’ education THE CANADIAN PRESS Forget silk or sequins: paper was the material of choice for Erinne Paisley who transformed old homework into a statement-making grad dress.

The Victoria student had planned to buy a normal dress for her recent high school graduation. But as the event drew near, her thoughts turned to girls who didn’t have access to education and what she could do to bring awareness to their plight.

“I thought it would be a great time to try to redirect the energy and attention of graduation back to an organization and a movement that’s trying to provide the same opportunity to girls,” Paisley, 18, said in a phone interview.

Using old math notes and plenty of tape, Paisley worked with her friend, Emily Faris, for more than seven hours straight assembling the final product, which also included straps fashioned from black satin.

“I thought using my homework would be a very visual and real representation of everything I’ve had the opportunity to put into my education, and everything I’ve received from it, and how valuable and how powerful an education really can be,” said Paisley, who

Jerry was born in Nelson on August 4, 1952, to parents Joseph and Marie Schuepfer. For many years, until his retirement in 2009, Jerry worked as a welder for West Kootenay Power/Fortis. Jerry loved his dogs and all other animals, going for firewood, going to the gym, socializing with family and friends over a cup of coffee, cruising on the Arrow Lake and being Santa for family and friends.

He was predeceased by his dog Teka, his parents Joseph and Marie, sisters Lorraine Soucie and Rita Driscoll and father-in-law Eli Jmaiff.

Left to mourn his loss is his loving wife Teresa; Abby and Mindy; brother Gilbert (Blythe) Schuepfer; mother-in-law Mabel Jmaiff; brother-in-law Rob (Janet) Jmaiff; nephews Jeff (Delia) Schuepfer, Jason (Jana) Schuepfer and Joe (Erin) Driscoll; nieces Catherine Gamez and Amber and Chris Jmaiff and several great nieces and nephews.

She also included the website for the Malala Fund on the creation and donated funds she would have spent on a proper dress to the cause.

The Malala Fund is aimed at helping to empower girls through education. It was cofounded by Pakistani education activist and Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai, who survived being shot in the head by the Taliban while returning from school.

Paisley has set up an online auction for the dress on GoBid.ca to raise money for the charity. As of Thursday afternoon, the highest bid was $600.

Paisley admitted the creation was uncomfortable to wear and she wound up changing into an “emergency dress” when she sat down for dinner and it started to rip slightly.

Paisley said she’s received an incredible response to her custom creation.

“At first, most people were confused or curious and definitely approached me asking what it was about, which is great; because a conversation was started that definitely needs to be had.”

Kelowna woman tracks down biological dad who is an Elvis impersonator in Thailand

THE CANADIAN PRESS A Canadian woman says tracking down her biological father was always on her mind until a threeday social media campaign helped identify him as an Elvis impersonator working in Thailand.

F o r t y - s i x - y e a r- o l d Melonie Dodaro said she’d longed to know more about her father and had made many fruitless attempts to find him in the past.

But the social media consultant from Kelowna recently decided that it was now or never to put her professional skills to use in the hunt.

Dodaro created a video identifying her dad and started a Twitter campaign using the hashtag #FindCeesDeJong, which was the only name she had for him.

Three days later, Dodaro says she learned that he’d changed his name to Colin Young, spent decades travelling the world as a musician, had made many unsuccessful efforts to connect with her, and had finally settled in Thailand with a wife and two young kids.

Dodaro says plans are in the works for her to travel to meet him and her two stepsiblings, aptly named Elvis and Priscilla.

Dodaro was no stranger to the power of social media, but said the experience of solving a decades-long mystery was like nothing she’d ever come across on the job.

“I posted it on Saturday morning just after 10 a.m., and, basically, by Tuesday morning at 10 a.m., I was talking to my dad on the phone,” she said in a telephone interview.

Dodaro’s curiosity about her paternal ancestry dated all the way back to childhood. She said her mother never hid the fact that the man who helped raise her was not a biological relative and willingly shared the few bits of information she had on the man who was.

Dodaro said her mother and father dated for a few months in 1968 while living in Brampton, Ont., but went their separate ways before realizing there was a baby on the way.

By the time Dodaro was born, her mother was engaged to someone else

and the man she’d known as Cees DeJong had relocated to Australia.

DeJong received a letter informing him that he had a daughter and soon tried to connect with her, but Dodaro’s mother had now married and changed the family name.

He tried again in 1985, even spending a few days in Toronto to dig through records, but drew a blank.

During that time, Dodaro herself had undertaken her own search armed with only a few scanty details.

She knew both his name and nationality, but said that information proved more of a hindrance than a help.

“His name was the most common Dutch name,” she said. “It was literally the equivalent of John Smith in North America.”

Dodaro eventually resigned herself to life without a connection to her father, but decided to tackle the search one more time at the urging of a friend.

After consulting with her husband and 27-year-old son, she made her sparse knowledge public in a video, a blog post and a tweet that

soon went viral.

Before long, a Dutch newspaper had picked up the story and generated a flood of tips. Eventually, Dodaro said a man who was friendly with both the reporter and DeJong himself helped connect the dots and put father and daughter in touch for the first time.

Dodaro described the wait for the phone call as “the longest 10 minutes of my life,” but said the two immediately set about making up for lost time.

Dodaro said she was initially taken aback by her dad’s current career, but said she enjoys knowing that her son’s musical talents were inherited from his grandfather.

She said she and her family are hoping to head to Thailand in August to cap off what she describes as a “truly surreal” experience.

“Part of me is still in shock,” she said. “I wake up and I’m like, ‘was that a dream? Is this real?’ I jump out of bed and I’m checking my phone, checking my emails, checking my Facebook and saying, ‘oh, yes, it is real!”’

National Pre-election ads makes mockery of spending limits: senator THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA - Federal political parties are being challenged to publicly disclose how much taxpayer-subsidized money they’re spending on advertising during the unregulated pre-election season.

The advent of fixed dates for federal elections has turned the months leading up to the Oct. 19 national vote into a spending free-for-all.

Sen. Dennis Dawson says that makes a mockery of the strict spending limits imposed during election campaigns, which are meant to reduce the influence of money and level the playing field for all parties.

Dawson, who sits as a Liberal senator, had hoped to compel parties to disclose how much they spend on advertising in the three months before an election is formally called, and to have that count against their campaign spending limit.

But two attempts to pass a private member’s bill to that effect have gone nowhere.

So Dawson is now calling on the parties to voluntarily disclose how much they spend on advertising in the three months before the writ is dropped for the October vote.

Canadians have a right to know how much is being spent trying to win their votes, he said in an interview.

“If you’re going to be buying them, at least tell them how much you paid for them.”

Dawson is also calling on the parties to promise, as part of their election platforms, to put an end to “Wild West” pre-election spending - what he considers a “perversion” of campaign spending rules caused by the imposition of fixed election dates.

“When you didn’t have a fixed election date, you didn’t waste your money because you didn’t know if the election was going to be held six months later or a year and a half later. So there was a sort of self-discipline,” he said.

“Now that you know that the writ will be dropped in September, you’ve seen them all start spending over the last few days, few weeks, and you can only imagine that it’s just going to get worse.”

Last week, all three main parties released new television ads. None of the parties would reveal how much is being spent on them.

However, the Liberals said their latest offering constitutes the party’s largest ad buy ever, outside an election writ period. And the NDP said it was spending in “seven figures” for their ad.

Debate over minimum wage hike heats up as consultations begin THE CANADIAN PRESS CALGARY - John Batas, the owner of Michael’s Restaurant & Pizza in Calgary, is blunt in his assessment of the Alberta government’s plan to raise the hourly minimum wage by nearly four dollars in three years - which would make it the highest in Canada.

“I think going from what it is to $15 is ridiculous,” he says, adding that the move would result in higher prices and possibly fewer hours for staff or even layoffs.

“Our food costs are high already. Now you’re going to add our labour up high.”

His views foreshadow the criticism the province’s NDP government will face as it kicks off consultations this month with businesses and advocacy groups on how to increase the minimum wage, which now sits at $10.20, to $15 by 2018.

Labour Minister Lori Sigurdson is expected to announce next month what kind of wage hike will take effect in October.

Small business concerns about minimum wage increases are not new, but in Alberta they may be more pronounced than usual.

The increases come at a time when the province’s economy is grappling with low oil prices, and rising food costs is another factor

that could exacerbate pressure on fast-food outlets, a sector that would feel the sting of minimum wage hikes more than others.

Amber Ruddy, a senior policy analyst at the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, said she’s looking forward to speaking with Sigurdson and expressing the concern members have about rising wages.

“Entrepreneurs generate wealth, they take risks, and they make these upfront investments in their business,” Ruddy said.

“Let’s not punish them by hiking up the wage cost.”

But not all businesses are worried.

Patty Nowlin, co-owner of the Sunnyside Natural Market in Calgary, says she’s been paying staff more than minimum wage for quite some

time and its come with benefits.

“What we find is our retention is fantastic, so we save a lot of costs in interviewing, hiring,” says Nowlin. “And of course we have happy, engaged employees, which means really great customer service and good productivity.”

As of March, 2.2 per cent of Albertans made minimum wage compared with 7.6 per cent across Canada, according to the Alberta government.

But an estimated 383,900 workers, or 20.5 per cent of employed Albertans, earned less than $15 an hour based on July 2014 Statistics Canada numbers, meaning many in the province would see their wages increase if the government follows through on its minimum wage promise.

he UN’s annual World Water Development Report, published in March, warned that unless the balance between demand and supplies is restored the world will face a “global water deficit” of 40 per cent by 2030.

Two weeks ago, protestors in hundreds of cities in 38 countries rallied against agricultural research giant Monsanto’s genetically modified plant seeds (GMO). What do these seemingly disparate events have in common? The first issues an urgent call for action crucial to the future of mankind. The second denounced one the most promising ways of avoiding that impending crisis.

The UN report states that, “making water intensive sectors more efficient” is the only way of restoring supply demand balance.

The most water intensive sector, by a huge margin, is agriculture. Not only do Monsanto’s drought resistant seeds need less water, but they also require less fertilizer, thereby reducing the weed nourishing runoff that pollutes lakes, rivers and streams.

The world scientific community is strongly supportive of genetic seed

technology. The American Association for the Advancement of Science states, “biotechnology is safe”. The French Academy of Science agrees: “All criticism against GMOs can largely be rejected on scientific criteria.”

The national science academies of Germany, India and China as well as Britain’s Royal Society share the same view.

And the World Health Organization states, “No effects on human health problems have been shown as a result of the consumption of GM foods.” This statement comes after trillions of GMO grown meals have been eaten over the past 15 years.

The March against Monsanto website alleges that studies show genetically modified foods “can lead to health conditions, such as the development of cancer tumours, infertility and birth defects.” Despite overwhelming scientific evidence to the contrary, millions of people believe this groundless propaganda, bringing to mind lyrics from Stevie Wonder’s hit song, “If you believe in something that you don’t understand . . . that’s superstition.”

people have become convinced that GMO foods are dangerous? The answer to that question came in a shocking January 2013 speech by Mark Lynas, founder of the anti-GMO food movement. “We employed a lot of imagery about scientists in their labs cackling demonically as they tinkered with the building blocks of life.

Hence, the Frankensteinfood tag. This absolutely was about deep-seated fears of scientific powers being used secretly for unnatural ends. These fears spread like wildfire . . . This has been the most successful campaign I have ever been involved with.”

Lynas’s redemption came when he finally decided to look at the science. He learned that GMOs require less fertilizer, thereby reducing

nutrient rich runoff that causes fish-killing, oxygenstarved dead zones in weedchoked watercourses. He learned that pest-resistant seeds reduce insecticide use. And crucial to the UN report’s prime objective of reducing water consumption, he found that drought resistant plants lessen unsustainable depletion of water aquifers, rivers and lakes.

Contrary to his own Frankenfood label, he found that GMO research is actually safer and more precise than traditional plant genetics that “mucks about with the entire genome in a trial-and-error way.”

Unfortunately, these startling revelations from the creator of the anti-GMO movement have come too late to reverse the runaway Frankenfood religion with millions of converts around the world. Rather than convincing his congregation to abandon their misplaced faith, his personal redemption has only turned him into an apostate in the eyes of his former followers.

Given that GMO offers the most promising way of avoiding catastrophic global water and food shortages, one would think that environmental and

food-aid groups would embrace GMO foods as a major advancement in humanity’s journey. Yet, sadly, most have bought into the Frankenfood myth.

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that agricultural use consumes 70 per cent of global water withdrawals. The UN also projects a global population increase of more than one billion people by 2030. The collision of these two statistics means that, unless major reductions in agricultural water use can be achieved, dire shortages of both water and food affecting billions of people are inevitable.

The most severely impacted will be in SubSaharan Africa and the Indian sub-continent. It’s not surprising that the recent anti-GMO rallies were overwhelmingly concentrated in North America and Europe. You can be sure that none of the protestors were impoverished Africans or Indians who will bear the brunt of worsening water and food shortages.

Now I understand what is wrong at City Hall. The City Fathers do not like kids.

If the project is for young people, then forget it.

If thousands spent on keeping the Old Bridge closed were spent for a skate park, we would have a skate park.

Give it another 20 years when some of the City Fathers have moved on.

Or maybe, just maybe, when the airport problems are solved the City Fathers might build a skate park at the end

of the airport runway, and then run city buses out twice a day for the kids with their skateboards.

It’s a no-brainer but, forget it, it is still for young people.

I am reminded of an incident about three years ago when I decided to check and see how the kids were doing after the Old Bridge was closed.

Greece’s debt now amounts to 175 percent of Gross Domestic Product. No other developed country has ever reached that level of debt in peacetime without eventually defaulting. But the EU goes on feeding Greece just enough money to prevent a default – and 90 percent of that money goes straight back to German, French and other European banks in debt repayments.

There is no way that Greece can ever repay its debts. Either its creditors cancel at least half its debt, or it must eventually default.

Anything else is simply stretching Greece’s agony out.

Indeed the Greek economy is already so badly damaged that there is some question as to whether the government could now raise enough income from domestic sources to maintain essential services after a default.

The Greeks have suffered a great deal of hardship already to stay in the euro, and they seem prepared to suffer some more.

The European Union is prepared to cut them enough slack to keep them from defaulting, because its members fear the future of the euro itself if it becomes clear that countries can actually leave. However, the EU will not make enough concessions to put Greece on the road to recovery.

So this unbearable status quo will continue for a while – and eventually the Greeks will say “enough”. But it will still be five minutes to midnight for some months, and quite possibly even into next year.

The Attributes of a Disciple Matthew Chapter 5 begins with the gathering of a great crowd. On seeing them, Jesus responds by climbing up the mountain and sitting down. Matthew recounts how Jesus’ disciples separated themselves from the crowd and climbed the mountain after him.

Jesus begins his teaching by addressing them.

We might ask ourselves, what was it that separated those first disciples from the rest of the crowd? Jesus addresses that question by saying: “Blessed are the poor in spirit... those who mourn... the meek... and those who hunger and thirst for righteousness.”

It wasn’t in what they possessed that separated them from the crowd, but in what they did not have. They climbed the mountain in search of something that was missing in their lives. They came to Jesus in the hope of finding what they were looking for.

But this is not the only reason they came to Jesus. Jesus continues by saying: “Blessed are the merciful... the pure in heart ... and

the peacemakers.” These were the things that attracted the disciples to Jesus; the things they were looking for. Ultimately, they saw each one of these attributes in the person of Christ and the mission for which he was sent. In their attraction to Christ, these attributes begin to take shape in their lives too.

By climbing the mountain, the disciples break away from the crowd down below.

This would have caused some tension, some hardship. Jesus acknowledges this last fact by saying, “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’s sake... who are reviled and persecuted... on my account.”

He knows their lot will not be an easy one, that the crowd will hold them to account for separating themselves from them. For this reason, the disciples will share in the suffering of their master. But Jesus leaves them with a promise. “Blessed are you,” he says, “for your reward is great in heaven”. And, even now, “you will know God” and ‘’you will be children of the Most High”.

omeone challenged my use of the term “physician assisted dying”, describing it as mealy mouthed. I had used the term while commenting on the Carter decision, which deals with assisted suicide. In retrospect, my choice of language was a bit wimpy. I was doing what people have been doing for millennia, opting for a euphemism instead of speaking plainly.

Euphemisms have been around at least since biblical times when to uncover a man’s foot was an idiom for making sexual advances. Today, as in the 10th century, people “sleep togethlouise er”, and everyone knows the intention behind an invitation Everyday Theology for a “nightcap”.

In classical times, “curled up”, “gone to sleep”, or “on a journey” were euphemisms for death. Now, we “pass away”.

Depending on the circumstances, we might even experience a “negative patient outcome.”

The human body and its functions are a rich source of euphemism.

The English language has over 2500 words for the body’s “private parts” and numerous phrases to describe natural functions. Before it was polite to say that a woman was pregnant, or for a pregnant woman to proudly display her “condition”, she was “with child”, “in the family way”, or (my personal favorite dating from Victorian times) had “a bun in the oven”.

While some euphemisms help us navigate our way around embarrassing, painful or taboo subjects, others help us save face or elevate our position.

Euphemisms often obscure reality FROM PAGE 8 Corporations that want to bolster their bottom line “downsize” and respected managers get “the golden handshake”. Someone who is unemployed is “between jobs” or “making a career change.”

Secretaries and janitors have gone the way of the dinosaurs with “administrative assistants” and “sanitation engineers” stepping into fill the void. Perhaps one day, “pedagogical mentors” will replace teachers.

Then there are those euphemisms that fool us into thinking we

are clever and enlightened. “Monogam-ish”, a term recently coined by sex columnist Dan Savage, falls into this category. To be monogam-ish is to be mostly faithful to your partner, while embracing affairs as a normal and healthy part of a committed relationship.

The media encouraged debate on the validity of monogamy and invited people to describe their experience of being monogam-ish. But if we are to be truthful, monogam-ish is nothing other than plain old-fashioned infidelity once we remove

the smokescreen of language.

Equally dangerous are those mealy mouthed phrases that sugarcoat the unpalatable and disguise inconvenient truths.

“Collateral damage” sanitizes the loss of human life, and “enhanced interrogation techniques” masks torture.

And what about “physician assisted dying”, the term for which I opted? At one time, we talked about “mercy killing”, and more recently, “assisted suicide”.

But since we have no appetite for state

sanctioned murder, we have found increasingly more complex ways to describe a questionable action.

“Medical aid in dying” and “physician assisted dying” camouflages the truth, desensitizing us to the reality of killing.

Euphemisms are The Emperor’s New Clothes of language, obscuring reality, swindling our conscience and leading us away from truth. So while indirect speech allows us to talk politely about awk-

ward, embarrassing or painful subjects, it can also, to quote George Orwell, “make lies sound truthful, murder respectful and give an appearance of solidity to pure wind.”

Flower pots can attract beneficial insects

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Even a little effort a potted plant, say, on an apartment balcony - can mean a lot when trying to help restore declining pollinator populations like bees, bats, and butterflies.

“Every contribution is worthwhile,” said Victoria Wojcik,

research director for the Pollinator Partnership in Toronto, Ontario. “You’re making a better environment for pollinators, no matter how small.”

Butterflies and other pollinators don’t need large areas for foraging but they do need a flower, she said.

Pollination is needed by at least 80 per cent of the world’s crop species. Wind does the job for numerous plants, notably grasses, while many others are served by a variety of animal pollinators.

Kari Houle, an extension educator with the University of Illinois suggests a number of pollinatorfriendly annuals for container use: alyssum, cleome, flax, lantana, snapdragon and zinnia, among them.

Select different flower sizes and shapes to match pollinatorfeeding habits.

“Butterflies like places to sit,” Wojcik said. “Hummingbirds like bugle-shaped plants.

Fragrant, sweet-smelling flowers attract night-flying creatures like bats and moths.”

Certain flower colours are pollinator magnets. Bees seem to like bright whites and yellows, while butterflies appear drawn to reds and purples.

More tips for attracting pollinators to pots: - Use succession planting to provide pollen and nectar from early spring to late fall.

Spring is an important season - especially for overwintering honeybees - because their food stocks of honey are low, and springblooming flowers are harder to find. That could mean tolerating dandelions, a favourite pollen source.

- Place containers in full sun and shelter them from high winds. Include water in the menu by adding a birdbath or dripping faucet.

- Choose doubleduty plants, like colorful edibles. “Herbs are a big one, especially rosemary and chives,” Wojcik said.

Here comes summer

W

ith summer approaching, gardening chores change from planning and dreaming, to doing and digging.

Many of you have undoubtedly taken advantage of the early warm weather and have already planted gardens.

Volunteers from incrEDIBLE trail, planting 16 very colourful containers that will live on Rossland Avenue across from The Colombo Lodge and near to Kate’s Kitchen. The location is significant for several reasons. The produce from the vegetable plants will be harvested to benefit Kate’s Kitchen and also Trail’s other two food banks/kitchens, the United Church and St. Andrew’s Anglican Church. Rossland Avenue desperately needs a facelift. Hopefully, these planters will inspire some of the owners of the buildings on this avenue to repair and paint.

This is a major thoroughfare in our city that does not reflect the people of this town well.

A third reason for choosing the Rossland Avenue site was a desire to engage the people who would benefit from the produce. connie Working with the Salvation Army, we hope to identify individuals who get meals at Kate’s Kitchen incrEDIBLE trail and would be potential gardeners. The idea is to help them help themselves by tending these containers.

This project is a fine example of what a few people with big ideas and extra energy can accomplish.

These planters are the result of a dream to stock food banks with healthy produce and at the same time engage the community. The dream as it has been answered is much bigger than the dream as it was originally conceived.

We hoped to place 11 planters along Rossland Avenue at that empty site. We have placed 16! Who is this “we” who has accomplished so much? It started with incrEDIBLE trail looking for a way to expand. The seed money was going to be from grants. But as the idea took on a life of its own, 11 planters became 16. A grant became that plus individuals and businesses that purchased planters for donation. That was wonderful.

But the dream kept being watered and it kept growing and producing. Along comes Alpine Landscaping, Warren Bond, Trail Area Health and Environment, and volunteers. The volunteers showed up with plants, seeds, hand tools and heart. They were old, young, male, female, and knowledgeable about gardening and amateurs.

Planters were filled with dirt, amended with additives like manure, planted and watered.

Because this site hosts a bus stop, school children are getting a little extra attention and some gardening education from talking carrots and hot chili peppers. These children are eager learners and delightful to be around.

You are invited to enjoy the planters, but the produce is earmarked for charity. One of our future goals is to realize a community garden where lots can be rented for a growing season.

Also as we move into summer, the Garden Contest is coming around the bend. Start sprucing up your private gardens. Prizes are cash awards.

Mad Trapper Shoot aims to raise funds

The 11th annual Mad Trapper Archery Shoot is taking aim at another successful event June 20-21 at Secret Creek Ranch.

Bow-and-arrow enthusiasts will wind their way up Bear Creek Road to participate in the annual shoot that raises money for non-profit groups and this year the proceeds will go towards the Trail local of BC Special Olympics.

“It’s important that we sell tickets and get people here participating, all the funds are going towards the Special Olympics, a great cause,” said Mad Trapper organizer Jay Mykieten.

“We are very careful of who we pick, so we ask around and we think about it, and toss it

around, toss it around, and that’s who we came up with.”

Last year 75 archers participated, as the Mad Trapper Shoot teamed up with the KBRH Critical Care Campaign and raised over $10,000.

“A lot of guys that usually come, couldn’t make it last year, so I’m hoping for 100, that’s my goal this year,” said Mykieten.

The Shoot is a great event for the whole family with mini-cubs categories for shooters up to eight years old, Cubs ages 9-12, Youth from 13-17, and Adult categories.

Participants will shoot at 40 targets on Saturday and 20 Sunday with a variety of classes including Men’s and Ladies cross bow, Men’s freestyle and unlimited, Men’s bowhunter, ladies bowhunter

and unlimited, and Men’s and Ladies’ traditional.

About 50 3-D targets will be strategically placed in the forest and pastures of the ranch’s 18 acres, including a small pond with a flatbottomed boat that must be paddled to an area where the archer takes dead aim at a 3-D alligator.

The fundraiser is notorious for its great prizes and this year is no different with top raffle prizes including a ladies crystal watch and rainbow sapphire necklace and ear rings, a trip for two to Las Vegas, a 50-inch TV, a pair of skis, a crossbow, a guided fishing trip, a Steve Yzerman jersey, and many more.

One of the highlights is the steak dinner on Saturday, June 20, that is open to the

public, but tickets are limited and should be purchased before hand.

For adults, the cost for the weekend shoot is $35, youth 13-17 is $20, for cubs ages 9-12 and mini-cubs up to eight years is $10 and $5 respectively. Archers can also sign up for a one-day shoot.

Tickets for the Mad Trappers annual draw can be purchased at PharmasaveTrail, Playmor Power Products, Integra Tire, Performance Fitness, RHC McDonald Insurance and Magaw Motors in Fruitvale.

Former Smokie coach returns to Penticton Penticton Western News Former Trail Smoke Eaters coach Bruno Campese will take the reins of the Bantam Prep team at Penticton’s Okanagan Hockey Academy (OHA).

Being with family and the chance to work with the OHA has brought the Nelson native back to Penticton.

“I have known the program well,” said Campese. “My son (Matthew) attended for two years. The quality of the people and staff is exceptional. To be around those guys on a daily basis will be fun.

Get back into coaching. Lots of factors pulled me back.”

After eight years with the Prince Albert Raiders in the Western Hockey League, he chose not to return in midMay. It was a difficult decision with the effort Campese put in with the Raiders.

“I had the chance to go back and chose not to for several reasons,” said Campese, who was the Raiders head

coach from 2007-11 and was general manager from 2008-15.

Okanagan Hockey Group vice president Dixon Ward made the announcement May 29 that Campese was named the head coach of the OHA Bantam Prep team.

“We are very excited to have Bruno Campese join our organization,” said Ward in a press release. “We have prided ourselves on the quality and expertise of our hockey staff and the addition of Bruno only increases that level. With his wealth of playing, coaching and management experience at the junior A and Major Junior level, Bruno will be able to provide our young athletes with the knowledge and experience that they will need to move to the next levels.”

Along with working with the Raiders and Vees, Campese was an assistant coach with the Calgary Hitmen after spending two seasons as the head coach

of the Smoke Eaters, and he looks forward to a return to coaching.

“It’s probably the next best thing to playing,” said Campese, who was a goalie for the Penticton Knights from 1979-81 “I’m really excited to get coaching and back on the bench. To coach that group, an elite group, is going to be fun.”

Campese was selected in the 12th round, 249th overall by the Boston Bruins in the 1982 NHL Draft. He played one season with Northern Michigan University and two seasons in the Western Hockey League. He won the Memorial Cup in 1983 with the Portland Winterhawks where, incredibly, he went 21-9-0 with a 5.47 goals-against average.

Some of his teammates from the Memorial Cup winning team include Ray Ferraro, Terry Jones, Richard Kromm, Cam Neely, Ken Yaremchuk, Alfie Turcotte, Jim Playfair, and John Kordic.

The Greater Trail Stingrays will be making waves this weekend as they host their annual swim meet at the Trail Aquatic Centre.

The Stingrays will see an energetic crew of young swimmers take to the water to race against seven other swim teams from around the Kootenays.

“The club is looking good this year,” said Stingrays coach Samme Beatson. “It is smaller than previous years as some of the older swimmers have moved on, but we do have some new younger swimmers who are very keen on swimming.”

The formation of the competitive TRAX Swim Club has absorbed some of the Stingrays athletes, yet the Stingrays Club continues to thrive and be competitive because of its fundamentals.

“The Stingrays always offers a fun and worthwhile summer activity that I believe will always be relevant,” said Beatson. “Running alongside the TRAX club has proven to be less of an issue than anticipated for a few reasons. The Stingrays is a summer swim club that welcomes kids who play different sports during the winter season and still be competitive in swimming. It is a fun place to learn the fundamentals of swimming for beginner swimmers at any age.”

The biggest obstacle to the Stingrays growth of late has been the City of Trail’s Residency Program and Sports Pass policy that has caused more than one headache and has restricted athletes, including Stingray swimmers from Rossland, from competing on a level playing field or pool as it were.

“Paying the TRP fee for Rossland swimmers has become quite difficult, but our club has a temporary solution this year that will help Rossland families get their children in the water.”

The Stingrays will run a program in the Rossland Swimming Pool starting next week that will be similar to the Trail Program and allow swimmers to attend the swim meets in the region.

“It is unfortunate, however, that young athletes from Rossland do not have the same opportunity to train within their greater community and use the best suited facility for competitive swimming in the area,” added Beatson.

Beatson invites the public to the Trail Aquatic Centre this weekend to watch local athletes compete on Saturday and Sunday.

Dear Annie: My daughter, “Chloe,” who is not quite 18, dated “Ted” for two years.

Things started out fine. Even though neither her father nor I approved of the relationship, we never told Chloe. After two years, she admitted to me that Ted was emotionally abusive, calling her names, pointing out every flaw she had. She was never good enough. If she was happy, she was too happy.
