City of Cranbrook Mayor Lee Pratt presented Johnston with the Sustainable Community Builder award on behalf of City of Cranbrook council. The annual award is given to an individual, group, club, agency or society that has contributed to the social, arts/cultural, economic and/or environmental sustainability of Cranbrook.

It includes $500 to be donated to a registered charity of Johnston’s choice. He chose to donate the funds to Habitat for Humanity Southeast B.C. to go towards a second house build in Cranbrook.

“Gord has been and I’m sure will continue to be a very active citizen in Cranbrook,” says Mayor Pratt. “His dedication and commitment to this community is recognized by many.

On behalf of Council and the City, I want to congratulate Gord. He is very deserving of this award.”

The Ktunaxa Nation and the Cranbrook Home Depot are once again teaming up to raise money for homeless and at risk of homeless people in the Cranbrook area.

Starting on May 28th and lasting until July 2nd, every $2 donation at the Cranbrook Home Depot goes to Operation Street Angel through the Orange

Door Project. Last year, the Cranbrook Home Depot was one of the top three in terms of donations given versus store transactions in all Canada and had donations raised matched by Home Depot of Canada.

This year, Home Depot of Canada will once again match the donations raised at the top three stores.

This is the second year

in a row that the Cranbrook Home Depot has chosen Operation Street Angel as the beneficiary of its Orange Door Project. Last year through this partnership, over $15,000 was raised with the proceeds being used to renovate Operation Street Angel’s new location at 46-17th Avenue South.

EKFH’s East Kootenay Regional Hospital ICU Redevelopment Campaign has received another major gift thanks to CANFOR. CANFOR’s East Kootenay Operations is dedicating $9,000 from its charitable giving program to support the hospital foundation’s fundraising effort to fully equip the only ICU unit in the region.

“We are pleased to be able to dedicate a portion of our profits toward giving back to the communities we are a part of. Access to quality health care is an important part of where we work and live and the new ICU will be

an incredible addition to our regional hospital,” explains Kevin Horsnell, General Manager Operations.

The new ICU is anticipated to be commissioned in the spring of 2016 and will have 6 beds versus the present 4 beds. The ICU is supported by four specialized physicians (internists) and a team of nine specially trained registered nurses.

Water gardening 1. Garden like an Egyptian. Water is a wonderful element to add to a garden landscape. When you install your first water feature, you will likely find you have started a new passion. The first fountains and pools for residential gardens were constructed over 3,000 years ago in ancient Egypt.

The designs were not so different from the water features we have in our gardens today, although the plumbing has certainly improved.

2. My Pond is My Castle. Ponds are great homes for all sorts of animals. They can be home to fish of course, but they also attract birds, butterflies, even amphibians and small mammals that are looking for a drink. A new pond - even a small garden decoration - can become a valuable habitat within a few years.

3. Where to start? The simplest way to go is a pot. A larger pot makes it easier to maintain water levels. A water bowl is fantastic way to get started that anyone can try. It does need to be topped up with water, but a water bowl is less maintenance than a hanging basket. These come in plastic and ceramic to meet everyone’s budget. This is a way to get hooked on to this different form of gardening and plans to start a small pond will begin.

4. Space a problem? No problem. Not everyone has the room for a large pond. Pond liner comes as small as 5 feet wide and can be custom designed to any size. In small area or large, a water feature can be made to fit.

5. Think before you Dig! Before putting in a larger water feature in your yard, you should decide what function it will serve and what features you would like to see. A larger pond should be located where you can see and hear them, away from large trees that will drop leaves into the water and in a location that will get six hours of sunlight.

6. Going Pondless. If a large pool of water is not what you are looking for, a pondless waterfall can be a great alternative. It combines the sounds of a waterfall and the beauty of a stream without having a pond attached. There are special kits available that include all the necessary components and make the set-up even easier.

7. Water your Plants. Water plants are hardy, undemanding, and gratifyingly pest-free, making them one of the easiest forms of gardening.

There are three basic types of plants from which to choose: emergent, surface or submerged.

Emergent or marginal plants, such as water iris and arrowhead, are planted around the outer edge of a pond. They give vertical accent while their roots absorb free nutrients from the water, thus aiding in a decrease in algae. Canna lilies and Colocasia are show stoppers plants in a water garden.

8. Floating at the Top. Surface or floating plants are necessary in order to physically block sunlight from entering the pond, thus reducing algae growth. Some examples of these are water lilies, water lettuce, and the water hyacinth.

9. We all Need Oxygen. Submerged or oxygenating plants scrub the water of remaining free nutrients, help to reduce algae growth and provide oxygen and food for pond fish. Included in this group are ceratophyllum and hippurus. These plants make your pond even lower maintenance.

10. Here, Fishy, Fishy! Fish add life and a whole new dimension to water gardening. The crucial thing when stocking a pond with fish is working out how many fish your pond can comfortably accommodate. The basic recommendation is to allow one square foot of pond surface for every one inch of fish excluding the tail. Have fun with your fish. They add the magic to having a water garden that lights up the lives of kids and adults.

Peter MacKay announced his resignation Friday May 29. As Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, MacKay visited Cranbrook Saturday May23 at the request of MP David Wilks.

“I accepted David Wilks invitation to visit Kootenay Columbia because of my high esteem for David and his tireless efforts on behalf of his constituents and all Canadians,” said MacKay. “David makes a significant contribution to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights.”

“However, what’s really remarkable is David’s private members bill that enables protection of children across Canada,” said MacKay. “It’s outstanding that for a private member’s bill to pass, but almost unheard of to achieve that in the first term of a Member of Parliament.”

Wilk’s new law protects children and holds criminals accountable.

It amends the Criminal Code (kidnapping of a young person) by ensuring that cases involving the kidnapping of children by strangers are treated with the severity they deserve. It imposes a mandatory minimum penalty of five years imprisonment on those convicted of kidnapping a child under the age of 16.

B.C. Views: Is BC a Third World backwater?

by Tom Fletcher We might call ourselves Super, Natural or even The Best Place on Earth, but how is B.C. viewed around the world?

Ever since U.S. billionaires and their environmental clients decided more than a decade ago to supervise our society, the impression that British Columbia is a primitive colonial backwater in need of “saving” has only been reinforced.

In late April, the province and coastal aboriginal leaders announced completion of marine planning areas for Haida Gwaii and the North and Central Coast. U.S. activists knew about the announcement weeks before the legislature press gallery did, and a documentary crew was sent up to advance the narrative of the saving of the “Great Bear Rainforest.”

Within minutes of the announcement, the World Wildlife Fund website trumpeted the creation of the “Great Bear Sea,” continuing the penchant of outsiders for renaming large parts of B.C. to fit their marketing strategies.

Unlike the “Great Bear Rainforest” land use deal of 2007, the Sierra Club, ForestEthics and Greenpeace were not represented.

McMillan’s role in directing U.S. foundation money to B.C. has prompted him to declare himself “a principal architect of the Great Bear Rainforest project,” although in the early years he and his staff (currently 24 people) stayed behind the scenes while Sierra, Greenpeace et al took the credit.

At the event, two aboriginal leaders gave a nod to the real funder of the ongoing effort to “save” the B.C. coast, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.

Gordon Moore is a cofounder of Intel Corp., maker of most of the world’s computer processor chips, now spending his vast fortune on the Amazon basin, B.C. and other “threatened” places.

Other Silicon Valley and Seattle billionaires helped finance the original effort, and a strategy document surfaced in 2008 describing their plan to de-market the Alberta oilsands by creating a blockade against energy exports on our Pacific coast. That campaign has featured a fake cancer study and grossly exaggerated greenhouse gas claims compared to U.S. coal and oil production.

The effort has since expanded to natural gas, with false horror stories about “fracking” finding a receptive global audience.

B.C. Interior and replant them with trees. Contrary to my description, “RB Trees for Change” isn’t participating in the dodgy European carbon credit market.

They’re just doing it for global marketing purposes, covering pioneer-cleared farms of our colonial backwater with forest for 100 years so they can advertise their soaps and cold pills as carbon neutral.

Another 10,000 hectares of B.C. “saved” from destruction by benevolent foreign interests!

Back to reality. B.C.’s Auditor General issued a report last week calling on the province to do more to prevent the “cumulative effects” of industrial development.

A familiar example of this is the struggle to maintain caribou herds in northern B.C. The B.C. government mustered a response from the multiple ministries that have worked on this since 2010.

Among other things, they noted that 90 per cent of B.C.’s vast area is now covered by regional land use plans created to manage cumulative impacts. A whopping 37 per cent of B.C. is designated as parks and protected areas for environmental and cultural values.

Maybe that’s still not good enough, but it’s better than anything I can find in Europe or the U.S. That’s particularly true of California, home of Hollywood, Silicon Valley, a pipeline spill, heavy oil refining and gridlocked freeways.

College of the Rockies President and CEO, David Walls, presided over the College’s 39th convocation ceremony on Friday, May 29.

In his address, Walls commended students for their courage in pursuing education as a means

to transform their lives and encouraged them to continue to be lifelong learners into the future.

The ceremony began with the presentation of academic medals. The Lieutenant Governor’s Silver Medal, awarded to a student who has ex-

celed in a vocational or career program and who contributed in a positive way to life at the College, was presented to Chantelle deJersey.

Chantelle completed the Certified Dental Assistant program and plans to continue to remain and work in Cranbrook.

The Governor General’s Bronze Medal, considered to be the greatest honour that can be bestowed upon a graduate of a two-year program, is awarded to the student who has achieved the highest academic standing upon graduating from a two-year diploma or associate degree program. This year’s recipient was Kyler Robertson. Kyler graduated from the Business Administration Marketing program and has recently returned from

studying in the Dominican Republic on a scholarship where he was able to complete some of his College of the Rockies courses online.

Kyler will be returning to the College to complete the Bachelor of Business Administration program.

Hannah Van Der Roest was the recipient of the President’s Award of Excellence.

This award is made possible through donations from College staff, faculty and management and is presented to a first- or second-year student, planning to complete a four-year degree at the College or elsewhere, who has achieved the highest cumulative grade-point average.

Hannah studied sciences at the College earning a 3.8 (out of four) grade-

Terry Fox Run organizer is needed for city “I’m not a dreamer, and I’m not saying this will initiate any kind of definitive answer or cure to cancer, but I believe in miracles. I have to,” the words written by a true Canadian hero. Terry Fox had a single dream: a world without cancer.

He sought to reach out to every corner of Canada, and beyond, when he embarked on his Marathon of Hope. Terry Fox ran the equivalent of a marathon a day for 143 days straight, on one leg, to raise awareness for the need for research funding. When his own cancer spread, he was forced to stop running.

The heroic Canadian was gone, but his legacy was just beginning. This year marks the 35th annual Terry Fox Run and Cranbrook is seeking a motivated, compassionate volunteer Run Organizer to continue Terry’s legacy in your community.

For the past 30 years, Cranbrook has hosted a Terry Fox Run. Perennial Perfection

Perennials are a great addition to any garden landscape.

Perennial simply means a plant that continues to live year after year despite changes in the seasons and weather conditions.

This differentiates them from annuals that only live until the first frost in the fall. When planting a garden many people tend to favor annuals due to their bright colors and wide variety. However, even with our sometimes harsh

weather conditions we are still able to grow a wide array of unique and vibrant perennials that will survive year after year. If taken care of properly, through correct watering and fertilizing, perennials can be a long-time fixture of your garden landscape and be a great investment in your yard.

One of the new perennials that we are super excited about is the Oriental Poppy “Snow Goose”.

This will be a hit

with anyone who loves poppies. What makes it unique is that it blooms early, lasts a long time and requires very little care. This particular variety has huge, white, semi double flowers. It has glossy petals of white with deep pinkish, purple blotches. It reaches a mature height of 24 inches tall and deer do not like to eat them!!!!!

Another favorite is the Iris Germanica “Gingersnap”. If you are a beginner

gardener, any iris is a good plant to start with because they are hardy plants.

These reach heights of 27 inches, so they make for a good vertical plant for any sunny garden with good drainage. This new variety is exactly the color of the cookie and makes for a nice contrast in any garden. Just remember, don’t plant them too deep or they won’t bloom.

If you are looking to add a perennial with a strong scented plant to your

yard, then look no further than the Dianthus First Scent “Burgundy Blush” & “Lilac”. These beauties arrived here from England and are known for their spicy fragrance, compact growing habit and long season of bloom. June is Invasive Species Action Month To get British Columbians active in preventing and stopping the spread of harmful invasive species in our province, the BC government has officially declared the entire month of June as Invasive Species Action Month. Invasive species threaten BC’s environment, economy and society, including human health, but stopping invasive species is possible if we take action now to prevent, detect and manage invasive species.

“Stopping invasive species is possible if we change our behaviours and take action together,” says Gail Wallin, Executive Director of the Invasive Species Council of BC (ISCBC). “Increased prevention, detection and improved management of invasive species can provide significant economic benefits to the province, businesses, industry, and citizens.

We are highlighting actions everyone can take each week this month, with easy things you can do to stop invasive species from spreading in the water, in plants and agriculture, through firewood, through sports equipment, and by keeping unwanted pets out of the wild.”

To promote Invasive Species Action Month, a new website has been set up at www.bcinvasivesmonth.ca, and the public is encouraged to post to social media using the hashtag #ActionOnInvasivesBC. British Columbians will find information about how to prevent and stop the spread of invasive species in their gardens, parks and forests, through sporting and camping activities, in lakes, rivers and oceans, and in their cities, towns and across the province. There are links to events and activities being held by the Invasive Species Council of BC, regional invasive species committees, local governments and stewardship organizations across BC.

Each week of Invasive Species Action Month, ISCBC will highlight specific areas where British Columbians can take action. The first week launches a new campaign, Don’t Let It Loose!, will educate about the harm of releasing unwanted pets and aquarium plants into the wild. The second week will focus on PlantWise, educating gardeners and those in agriculture, ranching and horticulture about preventing and stopping the spread of invasive plants in BC. The third week is focused on aquatic invasive species, with special campaigns around Clean Drain Dry to encourage boaters to take responsible actions to prevent the spread of invasive mussels and aquatic plants. The fourth week will focus on outdoor recreation, reaching out to campers and outdoor sports enthusiasts to remind them to Burn it Where you Buy it for firewood and Play Clean Go to remove debris from outdoor equipment to prevent spreading invasives.

Many of the events during Invasive Species Week will allow citizens to participate in hands on and concrete actions, such as field days, weed pulls, native plant restoration sessions, garden tours, and meeting with invasive species groups at farmers markets around BC. ISCBC is also offering webinars and new resources for educators and the public. “With the warm summer season just around the corner, June is the perfect time for British Columbians to take action on invasive species,” adds Wallin.

Kimberley set to host its first Medieval Festival in the Platzl

By Robin Knight Driving into Kimberley, a large sign welcomes visitors, and proclaims Kimberley to be the city of festivals.

And once it truly was.

But over recent year the city has let the festivals go and the position on staff of someone to co-ordinate and support the festivals. But this year Michelle and Eric Forbes of the Kimberley City Bakery decided that it was high time to bring festivals back to Kimberley.

“Kimberley has Julyfest, Thursday night markets, and first Saturdays,” Michelle Forbes stated, “but we decided that it was time for something new something the likes of which Kimberley has never seen before.” The ‘something new’ is a Medieval Festival complete with an authentic Viking Village which will be brought to Kimberley’s Platzl and downtown July 11th and 12th. The enthusiasm with which people have been gravitating

towards this concept has exceeded Forbes’ expectations, and several groups have come forward to offer to help and be a part of this event.

“The Sons of Fenrir are the main event,” Forbes clarifies. “They were the inspiration for this event. When I saw them carrying out full battles at the Calgary Highland Games, I knew that this was something that Kimberley was ready for.” The ink barely dried, Forbes has started setting the

For the third year in a row the Bull River Shooters Association hosted the BC Provincial Championship in lieu of its annual invitational match over the Victoria Day Weekend at our range near Ft Steele. 53 small bore rifle(.22 cal) shooters and 27 high power rifle(6mm +) shooters came from all over BC, Alberta, Northwest Territory, Montana and Washington.

Competitors shot from an unsupported standing position and targets are 40 – 100 meters away for .22’s and 200 – 500 meters for high-power rifles.

Thanks to the efforts of club members the range and grounds were in excellent shape and Mother Nature gave us fine shooting weather all weekend. New friendships were forged and old rivalries were rekindled, supported by a fantastic BBQ Saturday night. Some families enjoy the annual weekend as a reunion of sorts, travelling to visit and compete against each other. We were saddened to learn at the start of our weekend of the passing of our dear friend Rob McKeeman.

Rob was our club Secretary/ Treasurer the past few years and was a keen competitor and friend to all. He was the BRSA Top Gun in 2014. His smile and kind words were missed all weekend. At the start of competition we asked Rob to watch over us for the weekend, and I’d like to think he had a hand in the fine weather we enjoyed!

The students enjoyed an interpretive walk led

by Marcus, who told them how the Blackfoot would come together to hunt and gather for the winter months. He also shared with the group a story about the Blackfoot creator, Napi, his dog and the famous large boulder outside of Okotoks that explains

the history of Okotoks in the Blackfoot culture.

The lesson the students learned from this story was that once you give something away, you can’t simply change your mind and take it back.

A collaborative photo exhibit project in the main building tied in to a photography lesson from earlier in the semester. The purpose of the exhibit was to bring back the voices and culture of the First Nations People who were photographed. As with much of photography, the photographer’s goal is to capture their feelings about the people, scenes and events depicted in their photographs. By recognizing this, the project hopes to explore these people and events to see more than what each photographer has presented with his or her images.

JOHN DOUGLAS (DOUG) MCDONALD: It is with sadness and a sense of peace that we announce the passing of a great man, father, grandfather, and greatgrandfather. John Douglas (Doug) McDonald passed away in the early morning on Monday May 25th at the Elk Valley hospital surrounded by his family and friends.

Doug was born in Okotoks, Alberta on July 3, 1920 and attended school in Roosville and later, in Fernie B.C. He then went on to work throughout his life on the McDonald Ranch with his father, brother and, in later years, his sons. Doug married Jessie Britney on July 4, 1945 who predeceased him in 2007.

When Doug started ranching and farming fruit, he supplied local stores in Fernie until he began to build the sawmill business and eventually developed the Phillips Creek Hydro plant or, “Mac Hydro.� This development supplied and continues to supply power to sawmill and houses on the ranch. Other achievements included being one of the original founders of the Fernie Ski Hill, a school board trustee, and a director of the ILMA, Waldo Stockbreeders, and the BC Cattleman’s Association.

Doug was also a loyal supporter of the 4-H programs in the area and often purchased a steer at the sale. He regularly attended church in Eureka, Montana and in Grasmere and was a very strong Mason, often travelling to many events with his brethren.

Doug loved music and spent many hours entertaining at dances and family gatherings playing his violin. In his later years he played his violin at church services in Eureka nearly every Sunday.

Doug is survived by many family members including his younger siblings, sons Barrie (Judy-Lou), Glenn (Ramona), Ian (Mary-Ann) and daughter-in-law Peri-Dawn. He had ten grand-children and, six great-grandchildren.

The funeral service for Doug will be held Monday June 8th at 11:00 AM at the United Church in Fernie, which is located at 2012nd Avenue.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Gizeh Shriners of BC & Yukon, Transportation Fund, 3550 Wayburne Drive, Burnaby, BC V5G 3K9.
