There’s just something about the property at Royal Roads University.

When you turn off Sooke Road in Colwood onto the well-maintained grounds of the school, you feel as though you’re somewhere special. Somewhere old. Somewhere sacred, maybe.

With the school celebrating its 75th anniversary – 55 years as a military college and the last 20 as a full-fledged public university – chancellor Wayne Strandlund knew he needed to do something to help recognize that atmosphere and add to it.

“I’ve always loved the property, its heritage and its history,” he says. “It’s just a wonderful institution for Victoria. The fact that I’m now the chancellor and the chair of the board of governors is just kind of a culmination of my relationship with it.”

That connection began in 1963 when it was still a military college. It seemed to him that the 75th anniversary was a good time to try and do something special for the property and institution that he’s loved for so long.

Signing Day event Monday.

Canadian Junior Football League teams across the nation sign many members of their squads on June 1, after concluding spring training camps and players attend other camps to explore their options.

“This guy’s the joker in our deck of cards,” said Rebels head coach J.C. Boice, his arm around freshlysigned running back/slot receiver Jordan Worth, a 2015 Belmont secondary grad.

“Do you know what that means?

The joker is the card that will win or lose a hand. That’s you,” Boice told the young man. “Are you up for that?” he asked rhetorically.

It’s clear Worth is, in fact, up for that, as are the rest of those who signed on Monday.

Teams can sign as many players as they want, but must narrow their rosters down to 65 as of Sept. 15. Any signees cut from the squad after that date are free

to sign with other teams, but may not play until the following year based on national rules.

The Rebels Cheer Team, now with Mini (aged six to nine) and Junior (aged 10 to 14) squads, added an energy to the showroom that rivals that of Subaru’s WRX rally cars. After the first wave of players inked their deals, coowner Dave Saunders, along with father Bob, announced that their family’s foundation was giving

Beacon Hill relics passed along to cadets Artifacts held by last commanding officer of old-time Canadian warship presented to Langford cadet corps Don Descoteau News Gazette staff

The military is largely about tradition.

So it was rather fitting last weekend that the 263 Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps Beacon Hill commanding officer accepted the commissioning pennant from Second World War-era frigate HMCS Beacon Hill, its Victoria-constructed namesake, from the son the last CO of the navy ship.

Retired commander Rod Hughes presented the pennant, along with some other mementos from the ship collected in a wooden box, to Lt. Cynthia Lawless in a special ceremony Sunday during the corps’ annual ceremonial review at its hall in Langford.

The pennant had been presented some years ago to retired rear admiral Bill Hughes – he passed away in 2013 – and son Rod felt it was fitting that the cadet corps receive this very special collection of naval artifacts.

The gifting of the artifacts was special for Lawless, who got to know Bill Hughes a few years back through the longtime Canadian navy man’s work reviewing cadets, and his spearheading of a stained-glass window campaign for St. Paul’s Garrison Church in Esquimalt.

“He was very generous and passionate about staying connected with the corps,” she says.

Not only did he invite members of the corps for the dedication of the stained glass piece, Lawless says, Hughes made a significant financial contribution to the group for its annual top cadet award, which is given annually in his name.

“It’s rather bittersweet. The reason why we’re getting the commissioning pennant is because he’s no longer with us. That’s what makes it a little more heartfelt and connected. It’s a circle of connected things and it’s wrapping all that up. A piece of him remains in the cadet hall.”

The hall already has a number of artifacts from the Beacon Hill, which was in service from 1944

to 1957. They include a wooden battle board, the ship’s bell, a picture and a cast of the ship’s crest, and a few smaller items.

The presentation from Rod Hughes was just one of a number of awards given on the day.

Chief Petty Officer First Class Taylor Cartwright was the most decorated cadet, earning the Hughes/Beacon Hill award as top cadet for the year, the Lord Strathcona medal, plus the Division Music, leadership and best .22 rifle marksmanship awards. Not only that, she earned recognition for near perfect attendance.

Other top individual award winners were: Petty Officer First Class Cam Welch, Royal Canadian Legion Cadet Medal of Excellence; Petty Officer Second Class Erin Lawless, for the Navy League Medal of Excellence and Duke of Edinburgh bronze pin; Chief Petty Officer Second Class Brian Lawless, for the Duke of Edinburgh gold pin, and CPO2 Kershia Younger for the Sea Cadet Service Bars. editor@goldstreamgazette.com

CPO Bernays steered the ship, despite the bridge being engulfed in smoke and flames.

He even ordered two junior sailors to clear, trapping himself in the blaze while he executed all helm orders as they manoeuvred for position against the U-boat.

The Assiniboine eventually rammed and sank the enemy U-210 and CPO Bernays was awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal for his courage.

Spiritual connection to land key consideration for project Continued from Page A1

“The minute that I turn onto this property, something changes,” Strandlund says solemnly. “I don’t know what it is about the place, but my mindset, my attitude, my health – it all changes. And what’s doing that? It’s the spirit of the property. And what better commemoration of that spirit than a totem pole?

“We’re on heritage land here.

It’s heritage land in many ways.

Not only are we on the historic land of the Songhees band, the Esquimalt band and the Becher Bay band, but it’s also DND land … it’s also a national historic park. I think it deserves something special to recognize and celebrate all of that.”

So he turned to local Coast Salish carver Tom LaFortune to produce a piece befitting both the land and institution. The artist scoured the property itself for the ideal fallen cedar. It was removed and placed down in the boat shed on the lagoon and LaFortune got to work on his vision.

He designed the pole to represent both the land itself and the nature of the property’s use, he says.

At the bottom of the pole will be a frog, which is traditionally a spirit guide and protector, LaFortune says. Above that will be a welcome figure, hands outstretched welcoming visitors to the land. Then comes a perched owl, representing knowledge and wisdom, like that which is

Three rings separate the owl and the eagle, which will be perched on top overseeing the land and people. Each ring represents 25 years of the school’s history.

Once the basic form of all the figures are in place, LaFortune says, it will take roughly a month to six weeks to complete the 25-foot carving.

“The wood came from the site, the carving is being done on the site, it will be erected at the top of the hill to welcome people to the site, and it is the first pole to be put up on the site,” says Royal Roads president Allan Cahoon.

“I think finding the cedar here, and carving it here, and being here by the water is significant.

It’s a spiritual process, so creating the environment that is appropriate and supportive of that is important to us,” he says, adding he thinks it’s important to the people of the area, as well.

Strandlund hopes this is the first of many totem poles to go up on the property, “but that’s up to

the president and the university, and everyone else charged with caring for this place. You can’t just come in and start dropping totem poles all over the place,” he says, laughing, looking over at Cahoon. “I’ll do my best to encourage it, though.”

“But what are we here?”

Strandlund asks, rhetorically.

“We’re stewards. And there are many stewards. I’m just one steward. The band’s a steward, the DND is a steward, Colwood is a steward,” he says, noting it’s up to all of them together to take care of the land.

Another reason LaFortune is carving the pole on site is so the public can watch it take shape, he says. He welcomes visitors to swing by the shed anytime to see his work. Just stay on University Drive when you enter the property off Sooke Road and follow it right down to the water.

Watch for an announcement in the next month or so for when the totem pole will be installed at its permanent location on the property and begin officially welcoming visitors to the land. mdavies@goldstreamgazette.com

Reconciliation we can all do After six years, countless tears and thousands of emotional accountings of residential school experiences, the national Truth and Reconciliation Commission report came down this week.

Rather than making broad-based, sweeping recommendations that are more a state of mind, the report makes nearly 100 specific action points aimed at such things as helping aboriginal people recapture their culture, educating the general population about the country’s aboriginal heritage, and creating government policies and programs designed to enhance our understanding of the importance of that heritage and the distinctiveness of Canada’s aboriginal people.

The phrase “cultural genocide” was used to describe the systematic removal of aboriginal children from their homes and families and the residential school system’s abhorrent strategy of “taking the Indian out of the child.” It was an attempt to sever the cultural connection that saw aboriginal elders and heads of families pass on their language and other traditional heritage to younger generations.

In the 1960s, leaders in Quebec sought to have their province’s “distinct society” – its majority French-speaking population, unique culture and civil law tradition – officially recognized by the government of Canada. Two attempts to entrench such uniqueness in the Constitution, the Meech Lake and Charlottetown accords, failed, as have subsequent referendums on separation.

Nonetheless, Quebec and its uniqueness in this country are today recognized as an integral part of Canada’s heritage and cultural makeup.

The same recognition must be afforded Canada’s First Nations. Fortunately, work has begun, little by little, to acknowledge aboriginal distinctiveness in Canadian life. We see it on the West Shore, where schools have offered aboriginal education initiatives for some time. The student population at Shoreline middle school, for example, contains a significant number of young people from the Songhees and Esquimalt nations. As such, their unique culture and heritage is acknowledged frequently and celebrated with the entire school on a regular basis.

Righting past wrongs will take more than simply throwing money at the problem of residual anger and shame over residential school abuses. It will take further inclusionary practices and action by individuals just as much as by governments.

Rather than asking, “What does this have to do with me?” or stating, “It wasn’t my ancestors who did that,” we all need to ask ourselves, “What can I do personally to change the way I feel about and interact with aboriginal people in my community?”

It starts with systemically re-imagining the relationship between aboriginal and non-aboriginal people on a personal, individual level. It’s about treating all people as fellow human beings, free of judgment, with respect and compassion.

It’s something we can all do, regardless of what government policies may be enacted in the wake of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s work.

Another perspective on trapping Re: More than meets the eye with wildlife traps (Gazette, May 27) I read with some interest your article about wildlife traps.

I would like to provide you with further information and another perspective on the concerns expressed by Ms. Burton.

The property she refers to is one large shared area of multifamily rental housing (townhouses and apartments) in a large park-like natural setting. In addition to people and their pets, it is home several species of birds, squirrels and raccoons etc.

Despite being asked by the property managers not to feed the wildlife, some residents continue to do so. This has resulted in increasing numbers of raccoons and squirrels who have become bold and exhibit intimidating behaviours.

Some of these animals need to be trapped and relocated if possible and people need to stop feeding them so they can rely on the bounty of nature available to The Goldstream News Gazette welcomes your opinions and comments.

Public sees through corporate speak Events in Canada over the past month or so have shown not only that change is possible, but that people won’t stand for having corporate interests put before their own.

When plummeting oil prices late last year threw Alberta into financial crisis, people rightly asked, “Where’s the money?”

They could see that an oil producer like Norway was able to weather the price drop thanks to forward planning, higher costs to industry to exploit resources and an oil fund worth close to $1 trillion.

Leading up to the election, the government that ran Alberta for 44 years refused to consider raising industry taxes or reviewing royalty rates, instead offering a budget with new taxes, fees and levies for citizens, along with service cuts.

The people of Alberta then did what was once thought impossible: they gave the NDP a strong majority. Almost half the NDP members elected were women, giving Alberta the highest percentage of women ever in a Canadian provincial or federal government.

On the other side of the country, voters in Prince Edward Island followed B.C. provincially and Canada federally and elected their first Green Party member, as well as Canada’s second openly gay premier. Remember, homosexuality was illegal in Canada until 1969.

In my home province of B.C., after a long struggle by elders and families of the Tahltan Klabona Keepers, the B.C. government bought 61 coal licences from Fortune Minerals and Posco Canada in the Klappan and Sacred Headwaters, putting a halt to controversial development in an ecologically and culturally significant area that is home to the Tahltan people and forms the headwaters of the Skeena, Stikine and Nass rivers.

The Tahltan people and the province have agreed to work on a long-term management plan for the area.

David Suzuki with Ian Hanington On the same night as Alberta’s election, people of the Lax Kw’alaams band of the Tsimshian First Nation met to consider an offer by Malaysian state-owned energy company Petronas of $1 billion over 40 years to build a liquefied natural gas export terminal on Lelu Island near Prince Rupert, at the other end of the Skeena River, an estuary that provides crucial habitat for salmon and other life. The 181 people attending unanimously opposed the offer.

Two nights later in Prince Rupert, band members also stood unanimously against

the proposal.

On a broader scale, change is occurring around the serious threat of climate change.

Even well-known deniers, including U.S. oil billionaire Charles Koch, now admit climate change is real and caused in part by CO2 emissions. But they argue it isn’t and won’t be dangerous, so we shouldn’t worry.

Most people are smart enough to see through their constantly changing, antiscience, pro-fossil-fuel propaganda, though, and are demanding government and industry action.

We’re also seeing significant changes in the corporate sector.

The movement to divest from fossil fuels is growing quickly, and businesses are increasingly integrating positive environmental performance into their operations.

Funds that have divested from fossil fuels have outperformed those

that haven’t, a trend expected to continue.

We can’t expect miracles from Alberta’s new government, which has its work cut out. After all, it would be difficult to govern Alberta from an anti-oil position, and the fossil fuel industry is known for working to get its way.

Although NDP leader Rachel Notley has spoken against the Northern Gateway pipeline proposal, she isn’t opposed to all pipeline and oilsands development, and she’s called for refinery construction in Alberta. But she’s promised to phase out coal-fired power, increase transit investment, implement energy efficiency and renewable energy strategies, and bring in stronger environmental standards, monitoring and enforcement.

I’ve often said things are impossible only until they aren’t anymore. The past few weeks show how people have the power to bring about change.

Ford is opening its portfolio of electrified vehicle technology patents to competitive automakers to accelerate industry-wide research and development of electrified vehicles.

In 2014, Ford filed for 400-plus electrified vehicle patents – more than 20 percent of the total patents the company applied for last year “Innovation is our goal,” said Kevin Layden, director, Ford Electrification Programs. “The way to provide the best technology is through constant development and progress. By sharing our research with other companies, we will accelerate the growth of electrified vehicle technology and deliver even better products to customers.”

currently offers six hybrid or fully electrified vehicles including Ford Focus Electric, Ford Fusion Hybrid, Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid, Ford C-MAX Hybrid, Ford C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid and Lincoln MKZ Hybrid. In total, Ford has more than 650 electrified vehicle patents and approximately 1,000 pending patent applications on electrified vehicle technologies.

Ford believes sharing its patented technologies will promote faster development of future inventions as all automakers look toward greater opportunities.

“As an industry, we need to collaborate while we continue to challenge each other,” said Layden. “By sharing ideas, companies can solve bigger challenges and help improve the

industry.”

As part of Ford’s increased focus on new and innovative technologies, the automaker is set to hire an additional 200 electrified vehicle engineers this year as the team moves into a newly dedicated facility – Ford Engineering Laboratories – home to Henry Ford’s first labs in Dearborn. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.

by Jeff Atamian with a top speed approaching 300 miles per hour, runs a quarter-mile in the low six seconds, but produces a blaze of fiery exhaust for an after-dark spectacle.

The boat races see regular demo cars haul real boats around the track, with predictable mayhem ensuing. The evening also includes the regular demo cars and trucks, bombers and mini figure 8s, as well as Capital City Drifting club.

Gates open at 4:30 p.m., qualifying starts at 5:30 and racing gets underway at 6:30.

Last weekend’s race card saw the stock cars, mini-stocks, late models and WILROC lites sprints take to the track, where the crowds were treated to another Saturday night of burning rubber and checkered flags.

David Reside posted the stock car fast qualifying time of 18:840 seconds, but fell to Jim Steen in the trophy dash.

Chris McIneney came in third in that race, but went on to take the checkered flag in both the heat race and stock car main event.

Ryan Patterson took fast time honours in the mini stocks with an 18:906-second lap, and went on to win the main event.

Alex Mouner won the heat race and Matt Szauer crossed first in the trophy dash event.

In the late-model class, Wade Bland was both fast qualifier (16:761) and winner of the main event.

Brandon Carlson came in second in the main after winning the second heat race of the night.

Darrel Midgley won the first heat race.

In the WILROC sprint class races, Mike Haslam took top time in qualifying (16:182), but could only manage a fourth-place finish in the main event.

That race was won

by Dave Emmerson.

Second place went to Jeff Montgomery, while Guy Barrett was third. Emmerson and Montgomery also took their respective heats, while Jeff Bird won the trophy dash. mdavies@goldstream gazette.com

The first race features a free 600-metre full-speed sprint knockout challenge at the Langford race track June 5 where two athletes from each 4-racer heat advances to crown the eventual champion in the short, super-fast events at the Western Speedway.

Day two features a technical road race featuring steep hills, quick descents and challenging corners on a 10-km loop with an elevation gain of up to 4,000 feet, both starting and ending at Hans Helgesen school in Metchosin on June 6.

“The combination of healthy, fun activities for families and opportunities for cyclists of all calibers, including the next generation of BC’s and Canada’ future cycling stars, is why PISE is involved, “ said Pacific Institute of Sports Excellence (PISE) CEO, Robert Bettauer. “We really want to highlight all aspects of healthy living which is so wonderfully accessible in our community through cycling.”

Metchosin motorists have been advised to watch out of cyclists and expect delays at Hans Helgesen elementary and along the Rocky Point, Liberty, Labonne, Barrow and Kangaroo roads from 7 a.m. to approximately 2 p.m. on June 6.

The event culminates with a scenic ride from Bastion Square, past the Parliament Buildings on June 7.

Q: SHOULD I GET PRE-APPROVED FOR A MORTGAGE? There are advantages and disadvantages to getting a mortgage pre-approval, and it’s important for buyers to know a few of each before pursuing this option.

The benefits are that preapprovals can accurately measure your qualifications and find out how much you can afford to borrow, they guarantee rates for a specific period of time, and they’re free, no-obligation arrangements between you and a lender.

Pre-approvals, however, only provide a rate guarantee, not a guarantee that you will be approved for a loan on a specific property, or even for a specific amount. Because appraisals of property aren’t done at the pre-approval stage, and appraisals are mandatory for securing a mortgage, there’s a possibility that you could be pre-approved but unable to get the actual mortgage once you find a property you want to buy.

It’s also important to note that if your credit situation changes between the preapproval and your purchase, your pre-approval could be voided. If you miss a credit card payment or even change jobs, your pre-approval could be immediately worthless.

Greater Victoria’s scorching real estate market is putting an even greater emphasis on potential buyers being ready to close the deal.

The Victoria Real Estate Board reports a total of 905 properties were sold across the region this May, a 26.8 per cent increase over the 714 properties sold in May 2014.

“May was another great month for local real estate. It’s been a very active month for sales and listings, and we continue to see consumer confidence in our market as people continue to purchase properties,” said Victoria Real Estate Board president Guy Crozier.

“We’ve not seen this many sales in May since 2007 when we saw 963 properties sell in the month.”

Oak Bay realtor Cassie Kangas said the potential for a quick sale is yet another reason for buyers to be pre-approved and ready to close the deal.

“Knowing the house you’re looking at may have an offer the first day, you need to have everything ready. Could be the difference between getting it or not,” said the realtor with DFH Real Estate.

Kangas points to a house that had come on the market on a Saturday morning. She took her clients to see it that same afternoon.

“We were in the house when the realtor phoned me to say ‘My clients are on their way to the office, there’s already two offers,” she recalled.

“We hadn’t even looked in the basement yet. You have to be prepared, because if you’re not you’re not going to get it.”

Having financing in place is just one of the areas where realtors can assist their clients in buying or selling their home.

“The big thing is that every house is different, and there is information you need when selling your house.”

Kangas said she regularly needs to come up with information on items such as building permits, zoning and bylaw information.

“We need to have so much information. People who try to sell their houses by themselves don’t

She said permits can be a major issue that can have serious ramifications on the sale of a house.

“People do work without permits or they just don’t know what kind of permits are required,” she said. “If someone does come and inspect your house for some reason and they realize you have done all this work incorrectly, they can make you take it out.”

She said checking for possible oil tanks on a property is another issue that should be investigated before a sale, along with going over strata

documentation. Kangas advises going over a strata’s rules, bylaws, 24 months of minutes as well as any depreciation reports.

“There could be an assessment coming the next year for $60,000 and you’re on the hook for it. You have to read that stuff,” she said.

Kangas said it’s important for realtors to have good relationships with local governments as well as those in the banking and legal fields in order to address any issues that may arise.

“There’s stuff that buyers have no idea they should be asking and there’s stuff that sellers have no idea they should be disclosing. We’re here to know all that.” editor@goldstreamgazette.com
