“Every bead tells a story.” Karen and her staff of five discover, develop and deliver experiences. Bead Trails is a scavenger hunt for adults (and kids) that encourages visitors and locals alike to explore the Okanagan as they collect beads and memories from businesses in the nine communities currently on the trails. In 2016 they will be looking at expanding to Vancouver Island and beyond.

Studies examine national trends among female entrepreneurs

Close to one in eight working women in Canada today are selfemployed.

According to a 2009 study by Statistics Canada and Status of Women Canada, nearly one million women or 11.9 per cent of those with jobs were selfemployed.

This is a significant increase from 1976, when 8.6 per cent of working Canadian women were self-employed.

More than 1.5 million Canadians work at businesses owned by women, according to a 2012 study by the BMO Financial Group.

The national study also revealed that 71 per cent of women in Canada would like to start their own businesses and 83 per cent said access to role models or mentors would be important to their business success.

At small- and mediumsized businesses, more than 570,000 people work in businesses owned by women.

Of those in businesses with some level of ownership by women, the number rises to 2.6 million people.

According to a recent study numbers of Canadian women entrepreneurs are still growing but the numbers are not increasing at the same rate as in previous years.

Women who own

businesses are younger and have fewer years of management or ownership experience compared with male business owners.

In addition, women entrepreneurs in Canada are more likely to choose to start and run small businesses in the retail and service sectors.

While the gap is closing, women entrepreneurs do not make as much money as male entrepreneurs.

In Canada, women business owners tend to be less likely than male business owners to venture into international trades.

Women in business also tended to perceive more barriers to doing business than men in business.

Helping youth find a path to success (NC) Gone are the days when success was granted to anyone with a strong work ethic and the right post-secondary education.

Today’s youth face a much different and more challenging reality as they encounter bleak predictions about their prospects in the job market.

While coming of age was once a celebration, now Canada’s youth are consumed with the concerns of getting a job, paying off debts, and sustaining financial independence.

This is the twenty-first century toolbox, and what brings all these tools together is optimism.

The RBC Youth Optimism study asked 2,400 Canadian children ages 10 to 25 what excites them and what worries them today and for the future.

The study focuses on attitudes towards themselves, their

pleasures, and their opportunities.

The results show that between childhood and late adolescence, hope and happiness nosedive and the impact often follows them into adulthood.

Equipping Canadian youth with a positive attitude and sense of optimism is a collaborative effort.

Parents, educators, and all levels of government are responsible for shaping the foundation for our children’s future.

The Youth Optimism sur-

vey encourages parents to engage in conversation with their children about how they are feeling, what is bothering them, and what they are dealing with.

Every day presents opportunities to help young people learn resilience.

When a child sees not being invited to a party as proof that no one likes them, mom or dad can lead them through a reality check.

A teenager deflated by a poor report card can be prompted to ask important questions such as should they have studied

harder, and do they need additional help.

your trust so that they can gain access to your computer systems or defraud you in some other way.

Some cyber criminals even try to impersonate the government for this exact reason.

You can protect your business against social engineering by following a few simple rules: o Review and stay up to date with social

networking sites’ privacy policies (most are updated frequently) and adjust your personal privacy settings appropriately. o Ignore requests on social networks from people you don’t know. o Never reveal your precise location online. o Be suspicious of any phone calls, visits or email messages from

individuals asking about employees, their families and sensitive business matters. o Never respond to emails requesting private information, and never click on links from unknown sources.

Statistics examine women’s presence in Canada’s labour force Status of Women Canada has compiled statistics on women in the Canadian labour force.

The statistics, compiled in 2014, show trends and conditions based on data from across the country.

In 2014, women represented 47.3 per cent of the Canadian labour force.

This is an increase from 45.7 per cent in 1999 and 37.1 per cent in 1976.

Across Canada, 61 per cent of women 15 years of age and older are in the labour market, compared to 70 per cent for men.

Women were most likely to be employed in sales and service occupations at 27.1 per cent; business, finance and administration at 24.6 per cent and education, law and social, community and government services at 16.8 per cent. Men were most likely to be employed in trades, transport and equipment operators and

related occupations at 25.5 per cent; sales and service occupations at 18.7 per cent and management occupations at 13.9 per cent.

The unemployment rate for women was 6.3 per cent in 2014, compared to 7.0 per cent for men.

Women are more likely than men to be in parttime work of less than 30 hours a week and casual work. In 2013, nearly 70 per cent of part-time workers in Canada were women. This statistic has remained the same for the past 30 years.

Women tend to work in the services sector, with 55 per cent of all services sector jobs occupied by women. Only 22 per cent of jobs in the goodsproducing sector were occupied by women.

Only 14 per cent of registered apprentices were women, and the

majority were in trades such as hairstylists and cooks. A 2011 study showed only two per cent of carpentry apprentices, 1.9 per cent of plumbing apprentices and 1.5 per cent of heavy equipment apprentices were women.

Since the early 1990s, women’s average annual earnings have been roughly 71 per cent of men’s average annual earnings, however the hourly wage gap has declined during this period.

In Economic Action Plan 2013 and 2014, measures have been included to increase opportunities for young women to enter careers in sciences, technology, engineering, mathematics and skilled trades.

The measures include federal investments and financial support for those entering these fields.

by John Arendt Property values in Summerland rose over the past year, according to the latest figures from B.C. Assessment.

According to the assess-

ment figures, released on Friday, the average assessment in Summerland was $438,000, based on a July 1, 2014 valuation date.

This is an increase of 5.29 per cent from a year ago, when the average assessment was $416,000.

The average assessment figure for Summerland is considerably

higher than for other communities in the South Okanagan, Similkameen and Boundary region.

In Penticton, the average assessment was $383,000, while in Osoyoos, it was $364,000 and in Oliver, it was $314,000.

Individual assessment notices have been sent out. Jason Sowinski, dep-

uty assessor with B.C. Assessment Okanagan, said most homes in the South Okanagan will see modest changes of within five per cent of last year’s assessment values.

In Summerland, assessment values were higher than in the rest of the region.

Sowinski said communities from Penticton

to Vernon saw the most robust increases.

“Summerland is well positioned,” he sad.

The only Okanagan communities with higher average assessment values than Summerland are Coldstream, Kelowna, West Kelowna, Lake Country and Peachland.

On Saturday, she competed in Mobile, Ala. Early in the race, Cornett-Ching’s car was damaged after contact with another racer.

“With no outside wall in the corners I slid down an embankment,” she said. “It took three attempts to get back up to the track because the ground

was so wet from rain the days before. I could hear the crowd from inside the car when I finally made it back on track.”

Despite the setback, she completed the race, finishing 14th.

“I am impressed

by Sarah’s calmness in the car,” Blanchard said. “Her demeanour allowed her to listen and try different techniques behind the wheel that helped the

handling of a damaged race car.”

Blanchard looks forward to CornettChing’s racing season this year.

“Sarah is ready for the challenge,” he said.

“The team has been to these race tracks, and everyone here is determined as she is to support her success.”

Cornett-Ching has been racing since she was 12. She would

like to compete at the top level of Nascar, the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, in the future.

She said the ARCA circuit will be a new experience for her.

“This whole year is going to be a huge learning curve for me, its a new style of car different from what I’m used to racing,” she said.

A family of five Syrian refugees will arrive in Summerland on March 26.

M o h a m m e d Hussam Albetar and Nadya Alsagher, with their daughter Bayan Albetar and Razan Albetar and their son Ghassan Albetar are being sponsored by Summerland United Church.

They are among

10,000 Syrian refugees the government of Canada is taking in over the next three years.

Elected officials are welcoming the family to the community.

“We certainly welcome them with open arms and hope they enjoy the Summerland experience,” Mayor Peter Waterman said.

“I think it’s an idea place for a family

with children. There are tremendous resources in the community.”

“On behalf of the government of British Columbia, I am thrilled to welcome Mohammed and Nadya, their daughters Bayan and Razan and son Ghassan to Summerland in the beautiful Okanagan Valley,” said Dan Ashton, MLA for the riding of Penticton.

Over the past two weeks, volunteers from the church have worked to set up the house where the family will live.

John Arendt It took seven games of intense hockey action and determination for the Summerland Steam to win the playoffs against the Kelowna Chiefs.

The best of seven series ended with a 2-1 win over the Chiefs at the Summerland arena on Saturday evening.

The victory came in front of a record crowd of 450 people.

Both Summerland goals were scored by Jack Mills, who had broken his orbital in the playoff game against Kelowna on Feb. 24.

Mills was named home star of the game on Saturday.

The playoff series had been defined by strong play from both teams.

Earlier, the games had included a 10-4 domination and a come-from-behind 7-6 overtime victory for the Steam.

Gregg Wilson, co-owner and general manager of the Steam, said the team improved as the series continued.

“I think we got stronger as we went along,” he said.

“Our boys never quit.”

“This is a group that can get the job done. They know it and everyone around them knows it,” he said.

He added that the Summerland and Kelowna teams both worked hard throughout the playoff series.

“No matter what happens tonight, neither team should leave the Summer-

land Arena hanging their head,” he said.

“Both have performed valiantly.”

The Summerland Steam have been in playoff action in the past two years, In the 2012 to 2013 season, the team fin-

ished fourth in regular season play and lost to Kelowna in six games in the playoffs.

Last year, the Steam were first in their division in the regular season, losing to the North Oka-

nagan Knights in a seven-game playoff series.

The win on Saturday means Summerland has advanced to the division finals against the topranked Osoyoos Coyotes.

In regular season play, the Coyotes finished solidly in first place in the Okanagan/Shuswap Conference: Okanagan Division of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League while the Steam had a strong second-place finish.

The Coyotes finished with a record of 42 wins, seven losses, two ties and one overtime loss while the Steam finished with 28 wins, 19 losses, two ties and three overtime losses.

Throughout the course of the exhibition and regular season play, the Coyotes have been undefeated against the Steam.

The two teams faced each other twice in exhibition play and eight times in regular season action.

Two of the games ended in ties while the rest were wins for the Coyotes.

Despite the strong showing by Osoyoos, Wilson expects a strong showing from the Steam.

“Anything can happen in playoff games,” he said. “It should be a heck of a series.”
