Aldergrove bells to ring for missing women Aldergrove Star

Throughout the centuries, churches have rung bells for many reasons. To celebrate, to warn, to mourn.

The Anglican Church of Canada is marking 22 days between the closing of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission for residential schools on May 31 until National Aboriginal Day on June 21.

A variety of events are planned and St. Dunstans in Aldergrove is joining other churches in ringing bells for the 1,181 missing Aboriginal and Indigenous women.

This is a call for all Canadians to remember the women and also

a call to the government to investigate their deaths.

“For almost a century, the Anglican Church of Canada worked with the federal government to run a total of 36 residential schools for Indigenous children. While some participants may have had nobler intentions, the underlying colonial aim was the destruction of Indigenous cultures by taking children from their families, driving many parents and children into social dysfunction and addiction.

Many of the students who attended the schools suffered emotional, physical and sexual abuse,” General Secretary Michael Thompson said.

“We cannot undo the harm that

was done but we can work to promote relationships between our cultures and to change the future for this country.

“The call from the Primate and bishops to ’22 Days’ of prayer, listening, witness and commitment is part of our commitment to take seriously the recommendations of the TRC, and the responsibilities that are handed along to us as their work concludes,” Thompson said.

On Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m. during June, when you hear the bells, take just a moment to hold the missing women in your heart and mind.

Township ponders rural garbage pickup

Langley Township is considering expanding garbage pickup to include 5,000 rural homes that currently must transport their own trash to waste transfer stations.

As part of a general review of solid waste management, Township staff is conducting a mail-out survey of rural property owners to determine the degree of interest in “the expansion of municipal curbside garbage and organics collection to rural properties,” a memo to council from the engineering division states.

The survey, of owners of single-family detached homes in the Township who do not currently receive municipal garbage and Green Can service, can also be filled out online at speakup.tol.ca

(the property number from the mailed-out form is required).

Homeowners who complete the survey by June 12 have a chance of winning a three-month “Go Active” family pass to the Township’s recreation facilities, with a $300 value.

The Township has also planned two public information sessions, the first was held on Tuesday, June 2 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Aldergrove Athletic Park Field House at 29 Avenue and 267B Street, the second will be on Thursday, June 4 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the George Preston Recreation Centre at 20699 42 Ave. The current fee for municipal residential curbside garbage and organics collection is $24.39 a month, while it now costs a minimum of $15 to truck a small residential garbage load to the

Aldergrove facility.

That’s because Metro Vancouver added a $5 transaction fee to all residential garbage loads in April.

Metro also charges a higher minimum fee for small loads during peak times at the Surrey, Coquitlam, and North Shore transfer stations of $25.

The regional authority has also banned organics, including food scraps and yard trimmings, from the transfer stations and landfills.

As part of the Township solid waste review, staff have also been field-testing every-other-week garbage pickup and cart-based automated garbage and organics collection at 268 properties in urban and suburban areas.

A staff report to council with recommendations is expected in early summer.

The Village of Cache Creek has turned to crowdfunding platform blackpress4good.com in order to raise money to assist in the aftermath of Saturday’s disastrous flooding.

“Lots of people were working on different fundraising projects,” said Cache Creek Councillor Wyatt McMurray, “and we decided that it needed to be focussed and under one umbrella.”

He and several others began researching various crowdfund-

ing platforms, and Carmen Ranta suggested a B.C. platform, which is based in Vancouver.

Blackpress4good.com crowdfunding is powered by Fundrazr, and promoted via local community newspapers.

A committee was formed at the Council meeting on May 25, and the fundraising initiative received the approval of council.

The committee will set criteria as soon as possible, such as how to apply for some the money raised.

The committee will also decide who the recipients will be. More

than 100 residents have been displaced from their homes, some of which could not be saved, and many people have lost almost everything.

Due to the nature of the event, most people have been told their losses are not covered by insurance.

“This is purely for Cache Creek residents who’ve been affected,” said McMurray. “It’s not to pay for lampposts or park benches. One hundred per cent of the donations received will go to people in Cache Creek. None of it will go to the Village.”

Aboriginal Achievement Awards Students of Aboriginal Ancestry and their families gathered together with elders and distinguished guests to be honoured at the Aboriginal Achievement Awards on Thursday May 21st at Walnut Grove Secondary School.

The annual awards are a partnership between Kwantlen First Nation and The Langley School District. 135 students from all of the District’s Middle and Secondary Schools received awards including 33 Golden Eagle Graduates from the Grad class of 2015.

Award winners were led into the evening by their Aboriginal Support Workers and were met by Kwantlen First Nation Drummers who sang the Paddle Song. Golden Eagle

graduates were blanketed before entering the gymnasium and were given teachings about the honouring by Kwantlen First Nation Education Co-ordinator Cheryl Gabriel. Fern Gabriel of Kwantlen First Nation gave the traditional opening to the event which was hosted by MCs Luke Dandurand and Kayla Sakamoto. After being announced by Superintendent Suzanne Hoffman, Golden Eagles were presented with a pendant by Kwantlen First Nation Chief Marilyn Gabriel and then met their principals as they crossed the stage. They were then honoured once again by all drummers in attendance with an honour song.

Dairy farmers Ralph and Sonja Anderlini are warning the public about a cougar in south Langley after one of their young cows was killed early Sunday morning.

The 800-pound heifer was found dead in a pasture on 18 Avenue off of 216 Street, near Campbell Valley Park. “We could tell it was a cougar because of how the cow was killed and the conservation officer confirmed it,� said Sonja.

In 13 years of farming in the area, the Anderlinis have never lost any of their livestock to wild animals. “The heifer was killed 150 feet from the house and pool deck,� she said. “We really just want to make south Langley residents aware this happened and that there is a cougar in the area.�

The Conservation Office Service confirmed that it is a cougar and they have set up live traps in the area.

They are saying they don’t believe this cougar is a public safety risk.

This is the only killing of livestock that the COS knows of in Langley.

The Anderlinis think there may have been a cougar passing through their part of Langley a while back when their mares started screaming in the middle of the night. They don’t think they have coyotes near by.

Despite the sad death of the yearling, Sonja doesn’t want people to fear going

to Campbell Valley Park or anywhere else in south Langley. “Be aware of your surroundings and know what to do if you do see a cougar, but don’t let this stop you from living life,� she said.

Cougars rarely go after horses, but it is advised to keep smaller livestock like goats, llamas and sheep inside at night.

Local woman gears up for Cops for Cancer

A woman with deep and long ties to this community is giving her best efforts to the cause of helping youngsters who are dealing with cancer.

Debbie Morley-Lamothe is a corrections officer in her mid-50s who has signed on as one of the 22-person Cops for Cancer Tour de Valley team.

The team will be riding some 900 kilometers over nine days, Sept. 24 to Oct. 2, from Tswwassen to Boston Bar and back.

Every year the team of police and corrections officers cycles through the Fraser Valley, visiting many schools and businesses to raise money and awareness for pediatric cancer research, as well as support programs and services for children, through the Canadian Cancer Society.

The team also raises funds for Camp Goodtimes, a program for children and families living with cancer, and team members also volunteer their time to assist with the summer program at Camp Goodtimes.

While the Tour de Valley team’s goal this year is to raise $465,000 overall, each team member commits to personally raise $5,000 each for the cause.

Each team member is also committed to physically train for the ride over the six months prior to the ride.

Editor: My heart was saddened and my fears heightened when I realized that with his majority government Stephen Harper had whipped his cowed and broken MPs into passing Bill C-51. Sadly, the Liberal support of this bill, offering the pitiable excuse that if they should be elected, they would “change” the legislation, was even more unsettling.

In a recent discussion, a friend remarked, “Oh, Canadians don’t need to worry, because our Charter of Rights and Freedoms supersedes C-51.” Regrettably, that is not true. This legislation allows CSIS to obtain a warrant, granted at a secret meeting, permitting them to break the law and contravene the Charter Rights of Canadians.

Focus should be on planning Editor: “Are another million people really coming?”This is an extremely timely question. The anticipated growth of the Fraser Valley appears at best to be a crap shoot.

Government documents readily available online which reference the future of the valley are, for the most part, concerned with transportation, in particular the east to west corridor. There is scant attention to north-south roadways and uppermost, to people.

The forecast for transportation is founded on a plan hatched and implemented 15 years ago. This plan is woefully inadequate, as there is little or no inclusion of population.

In Aldergrove, there are two housing developments moving forward with an anticipated 200-plus units. Out here in the boonies that means 400 cars or trucks into the Fraser Highway corridor, with access to Highway 1 at 264 St. The development was not considered in any traffic forecast of the past six years.

A recent trip to the Willoughby area of Langley revealed an explosive, continuing growth in housing units.

Debating the timeline for the addition million people expected for the valley is moot. Residential planning is the uppermost consideration. Helter skelter developments with no pre-planned infrastructure should be the central focus of any city or township.

In my community, it appears a hunger for the tax base is the driver, with little or no consideration for the existing population and the newcomers’ anticipated needs to raise a family.

Roads are heavily subsidized Editor: I write in response to reporter Jeff Nagel’s story on the Fraser Institute’s critique of the mayors for failing to consider emerging transportation technologies in their transit expansion plan. In it, report author Kenneth Green argues dynamic, personalized transport may meet many goals of transit expansion supporters but with less cost and less public subsidy. It’s unfortunate an institute that holds itself out as a leader for free market thought makes such a basic error in neglecting the massive baked-in road subsidy.

If Mr. Green truly wants a less subsidized transportation system, then I would expect him to speak out against big government road building and in favour of privately owned and operated streets.

There is no way a private operator would rent 1,000 square feet (space required for vehicle and high speed stopping distance, not including freeway medians, clear zones etc) for the price of $0/ hour, as municipal governments are asked to do today.

As collective owners of the space on the other side of the curb, why do we accept a rate of $0 (for moving vehicles) or almost zero (for stationary parked vehicles)?

If they truly want small government and low taxes, they would be shouting the virtues of walking and biking from the hilltops.

Is B.C. a Third World backwater? Great Deli!

VICTORIA – We might call ourselves Super, Natural or even The Best Place on Earth, but how is B.C. viewed around the world?

Ever since U.S. billionaires and their environmental clients decided more than a decade ago to supervise our society, the impression that British Columbia is a primitive colonial backwater in need of “saving” has only been reinforced.

In late April, the province and coastal aboriginal leaders announced completion of marine planning areas for Haida Gwaii and the North and Central Coast. U.S. activists knew about the announcement weeks before the legislature press gallery did, and a documentary crew was sent up to advance the narrative of the saving of the “Great Bear Rainforest.”

Within minutes of the announcement, the World Wildlife Fund website trumpeted the creation of the “Great Bear Sea,” continuing the penchant of outsiders for renaming large parts of B.C. to fit their marketing strategies.

of 2007, the Sierra Club, ForestEthics and Greenpeace were not represented. Instead, Tides Canada CEO Ross McMillan sat beaming in the audience.

McMillan’s role in directing U.S. foundation money to B.C. has prompted him to declare himself “a principal architect of the Great Bear Rainforest project,” although in the early years he and his staff (currently 24 people) stayed behind the scenes while Sierra, Greenpeace et al took the credit.

At the event, two aboriginal leaders gave a nod to the real funder of the ongoing effort to “save” the B.C. coast, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.

Gordon Moore is a co-founder of Intel Corp., maker of most of the world’s computer processor chips, now spending his vast fortune on the Amazon basin, B.C.

and other “threatened” places.

Other Silicon Valley and Seattle billionaires helped finance the original effort, and a strategy document surfaced in 2008 describing their plan to de-market the Alberta oilsands by creating a blockade against energy exports on our Pacific coast. That campaign has featured a fake cancer study and grossly exaggerated greenhouse gas claims compared to U.S. coal and oil production.

The effort has since expanded to natural gas, with false horror stories about “fracking” finding a receptive global audience.

Last week I wrote about the plan by British manufacturing conglomerate Reckitt Benckiser to buy up farms in the B.C. Interior and replant them with trees. Contrary to my description, “RB Trees for Change” isn’t participating in the dodgy European carbon credit market.

They’re just doing it for global marketing purposes, covering pioneer-cleared farms of our colonial backwater with forest for 100 years so they can advertise their soaps and cold pills as carbon neutral. Another 10,000 hectares of B.C. “saved” from

destruction by benevolent foreign interests!

Back to reality. B.C.’s Auditor General issued a report last week calling on the province to do more to prevent the “cumulative effects” of industrial development. A familiar example of this is the struggle to maintain caribou herds in northern B.C. The B.C. government mustered a response from the multiple ministries that have worked on this since 2010.

Among other things, they noted that 90 per cent of B.C.’s vast area is now covered by regional land use plans created to manage cumulative impacts. A whopping 37 per cent of B.C. is designated as parks and protected areas for environmental and cultural values.

Maybe that’s still not good enough, but it’s better than anything I can find in Europe or the U.S. That’s particularly true of California, home of Hollywood, Silicon Valley, a pipeline spill, heavy oil refining and gridlocked freeways.

Federal funds for homeless initiative

Abbotsford will receive federal funds to support a new coordinated intake and referral system for those who are homeless in the community.

The city will receive $400,989 in funding over three years from the Homelessness Partnering Strategy (HPS), announced Abbotsford MP Ed Fast – on behalf of Candice Bergen, minister of state for social development – at The Reach, Saturday, May 30.

The project will create the intake system using best practices from other cities. The city will

also work with social support agencies.

The project is intended to provide a foundation on which Abbotsford can launch a housing first approach and provide a template for other similar-sized cities to do the same.

Housing first is a concept that focuses on getting homeless people under a roof as soon as possible, providing stability before addressing other potential issues such as mental health or drug use.

He said the provincial government has recently provided support for shelter, the city has taken on a significant role to address the issue, and now the federal government will provide funds.

The aim of the intake centre is to identify the highest priority needs and prioritize clients for housing first intervention, said Fast.

The last few years have “highlighted the fact that Abbotsford is not immune to the challenge of homelessness. We’ve had some high profile attention paid to Abbotsford.”

But not all were supportive of the announcement.

An act of Brotherly love set to take local stage

They took first place at the fifth and final Langley Has Talent competition earlier this spring.

But anyone who missed their prize-winning performance will get another chance to see Her Brothers play live, when they take to the stage at Chief Sepass Theatre in Fort Langley on Friday, June 12.

The band, comprised of three Aldergrove brothers — Gabe, 23, Josh, 21 and Levi, 15 — performed Locked Out of Heaven, Uptown Funk and Happy for the crowds at Christian Life Assembly.

During the two nights of competition, they wanted to play upbeat and engaging songs that would be immediately recognizable to the audience.

This time around, however, the brothers will play original music from their debut CD, She, which was released last January.

It’s music, they hope, that, in addition to captivating their audience, will get people talking about an important issue that is near and dear to their hearts — women’s rights.

“We want to create an experience that leaves people having a different conversation than when they came in,” said Jonathan Penner, the siblings’ father.

That conversation usually begins with a discussion about the band’s name.

“It’s an unusual enough name that people will ask. I love that question,” said Gabe, lead singer of Her

Brothers.

In its simplest form, the answer has to do with their youngest sibling, 12-year-old Tiana.

For Gabe, Josh and Levi, being Tiana’s older brothers comes with the responsibility of ensuring their little sister is given the right message about how she deserves to be treated by all the men in her life, now and in the future.

“As her brothers, we create her social norms,” said Gabe.

The band hopes to inspire men to stand up for, encourage, and become positive male influences in the lives of women who either don’t have a voice or simply can’t speak for themselves.

From that perspective, they say, the name Her Brothers just made sense.

The three are just normal guys, they say. And all of them have had their heads turned a time or two by a pretty girl.

But during a visit to southeast Asia, Gabe saw an extreme version of what many women are forced to endure at the hands of men. The treatment of women and girls that he witnessed — specifically sex trafficking — gave him pause.

What if that were his own sister, he thought.

As musicians, the brothers knew they had the perfect vehicle for getting their message out.

“Women have been standing up for years for their own rights, when men stand up for that equality, something unique happens,” said Gabe.

“I think it transcends equality,” said Jonathan. “It’s about uplifting and actually celebrating women.”

“She” carries that message through, with song titles like Beautiful, Love Over Hate and Family Tree.

Gabe wrote or co-wrote every song on the disc. He also plays guitar, bass, drums and keyboards, sings, writes and produces.

In fact, all the Penner siblings are self-taught, multi-instrument musicians.

Josh plays guitar and bass, Levi plays drums and keyboards. He also sings, writes and does graphic design.

was passed down to the siblings’ by mom, Teresa, who sings and plays guitar and by Jonathan, who sat in with his sons on keyboard when they competed in Langley Has Talent.

Although they are all accomplished musicians in their own right, it is probably Levi who has left both his older brothers most in awe of his innate musical ability.

Several years ago, Gabe and Josh were jamming with a friend. Gabe was on lead guitar, Josh on bass.

They were playing a Ramones song, recalled Gabe, but their friend, who was on drums, couldn’t quite get what the brothers were looking for.

When the drummer got up to take a break, Levi who had been sitting and listening, decided to have a go.

He sat down at the kit and nailed it in one take.

He was six.

Another day, Gabe wandered downstairs to find his youngest brother playing All By Myself on the piano.

“I said, ‘Where did you hear that?’”

Levi shrugged and replied that he had no idea.

The teenager counts his parents as his greatest musical influence — in large part because they’ve always asked him to examine his choices.

“Whenever I create something (their question is) what’s the purpose?” said Levi.

“They’re always pushing me forward — it’s always ‘why,’ not ‘what.’”

“Not pushing, like one of the Honey Boo Boo parents,” Tiana interjects.

“But encouraging,” she adds, once the laughter has died down.

“When I’m listening to a song, dad asks, ‘What is the meaning of that? Why are you listening to it?”

And why enter Langley Has Talent?

Although Her Brothers entered LHT to compete, the event also presented an opportunity for the band to meet other artists and potentially arrange collaborations.

The band was looking into the possibility of welcoming another Langley Has Talent act to the stage at Chief Sepass on June 12. Details were still being worked out at press deadline.

Otter Co-op sees continuing growth

Otter Co-op reported continuing growth in retail sales last year at the annual general meeting held May 28.

Despite challenges in the market, the co-op’s sales are closing in on $200 million, membership is up at 53,000, and $4.45 million is earmarked for patronage refunds to members.

Members also approved proposals by the board to expand voting opportunities for members across the province. The board is exploring options such as advance polls at the co-op’s outlets so that members do not have to travel to the AGM at D.W. Poppy Secondary school to elect board members.

The membership added one new face to the board at this year’s elections, Brian Thomasson, a retired educator and past board member of Aldergrove Credit Union. Susan Dodd and Larry Jantzen were reelected to the board.

Co-op board president Dick Mayer told the members that while there were problems, such as cross-border shopping, construction delays and the oil price debacle, it was still a successful year.

Skills on scooters and bikes will be featured at Saturday’s fifth annual Bike Jam.

Grab your two wheeled machines and come on out to Aldergrove’s annual Bike Jam! Bike Jam 5 is happening on Saturday, June 6 from 12-3 p.m. The local sponsors provide free lunch, a free draw for a Norco BMX (worth $369) and a Havoc custom scooter (worth $349), and other great prizes.

“This has become an Aldergrove tradition that continues to expand to include riders of all ages. It’s great to see kids as young as two years old ripping it up on the simple courses we lay out.

We encourage everyone to bring out the whole family, whether they can ride or not, to watch what our local youth can do,” says Heath MacKenzie, one of the event organizers.

The Bike Jam has grown to include a large scooter segment. This year Havoc Pro Scooters (www.havocpro.com) is bringing out their team to wow the community with their world class talent.

Paddling dragon boats sight unseen Aldergrove Star

A group of visually impaired students took to the water last week to learn the fine art of dragon boat paddling.

For the second year in a row, the Fraser Valley Dragon Boat Club (FVDBC) took blind students out on Harrison Lake to give them an opportunity to try a sport that is surprisingly well-suited to visually impaired people.

In this sport, sight can be a hindrance,” says Scott Farrell, FVDBC president. “We get excited, we see boats on both sides of us, we can lose concentration and look over. When you’re visually impaired, this issue it taken away.”

On shore, the differences were obvious between the sighted volunteers, teachers and siblings, and the 16 visually-impaired students from across the Fraser Valley. They held their canes or clung to trusted companion’s arms. They listened carefully to instructions about how to hold the paddle before being guided down to the beach to the two waiting dragon boats pulled up on the sandy shore.

Once everyone is in the boats, it didn’t’ seem to make a difference who is sighted or not. Instead, the

distinction was between the skilled volunteers from FVDBC and the non-skilled students, guardians and a reporter who sloppily made their way across the water, enjoying the sights and sounds and trusting the proper paddling to others.

The two boats ungracefully splashed and giggled their way along the Harrison waterfront, vying for first in mini races that raised the merriment to a new level. Smiles came as readily as the splashes from the water.

Harjinder Saran, 15, from Aldergrove, beamed as she held the paddle and listened to her seatmate’s coaching. Saran, who has been legally blind since birth, came for the second year in a row to the outing and says she liked it more this time since she knew what to expect and could just enjoy the experience.

“I liked that everyone had to work together, because it teaches us teamwork,” she says.

She says the fact you don’t have to see to paddle effectively is good and, just like everything in her life, “You just have to find a different way to do it.”

A four-goal first period gave the Langley Thunder a lead they would not relinquish as they won their first game of the Western Lacrosse Association season.

The Thunder led 4-1 after one period and 7-2 after 40 minutes en route to a 9-6 win over the Coquitlam Adanacs at the

She says the reaction she heard from students was great and they are already looking forward to next year’s outing.

“I heard the students compar-

ing how wet they got from the paddlers, as though greater wetness was a badge of superior paddling ability,” she remarks with a laugh.

The students even came up with a way to modify the activity for visually impaired people.

“One kids suggested that drum heads can be tightened and loosened to create different sounds. He thought the problem of not knowing which drum beat belonged to “your’ boat would be solved by tuning the drums. I thought that was a pretty good adaptation for the blind!”

Farrell says the great thing about dragon boating is the team building and inclusivity of it. There are blind teams, but also organ transplant teams, cancer survivor teams, young and old teams - it truly is a sport for almost anyone. He was pleased with how the event last Thursday, May 21 went and says they would love to see it grow even more next year.

“I thought it went fabulously; our volunteers really stepped up to make it a success,” says Farrell. “We had more kids than we did in the past so it’s growing and I’m really happy about that. It would be wonderful if we could fill our third boat with visually impaired children next time.”

Family grateful for Jumpstart support

Chelsea Borrowdale is a national champion in the steeplechase and one of the most accomplished swimmers for her age group in the province.

But were it not for the Canadian Tire Jumpstart program, she may never have made it this far.

Michelle Borrowdale was a single mother of two young kids, ages four and six, and new to Langley.

The family was involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters Langley and it was through that organization they learned about the Jumpstart program.

After getting approved, the money was used to pay for soccer and baseball for Connor while Chelsea joined the Langley Olympians Swim Club.

Chelsea had plenty of success and promise in the pool.

“Sports start out cheap if you are just in the having fun category,” Michelle explained.

“Of course the better you get, the more meets you go to and once you get better, you go to meets that aren’t in your province and you start travelling. Not cheap.”

Both kids were benefactors of the Jumpstart program up until last year, after beginning at ages four and six, respectively.

Chelsea turns 16 at the end of June and Connor is 18 and set to graduate high school next month.

Both teenagers are grateful for the support of the Jumpstart program.

“Plain and simple, it just gave me an opportunity to play a sport that I loved,” said Connor, who is now a golfer and hoping to play the sport at the university level next year. “I was and still am super

Chelsea — who is in Grade 10 — aims to land either a swimming or running scholarship to a U.S. university, knows that without this help, she may not be at the level she is at.

“Jumpstart has helped up tremendously. Without it, I wouldn’t be able to afford and do the stuff that I do, especially going away for big meets,” she said.

“It was money from Jumpstart that helped get us there. That is the reason I can go to big meets and that is why it makes you better.”

It may seem that swimming is an inexpensive sport, but racing suits can cost hundreds of dollars apiece, and then there are the out-of-town meets to test yourself against the best.

Chelsea said that in addition to money from Jumpstart, she also benefited from others in the community who would give her their old racing suits. It is part of the reason she joined the humanitarian club at Walnut Grove Secondary.

“I feel more connected to the community and motivated to help

out and volunteer,” she said.

“The community has helped me and my family so much I wanted to give back.”

Michelle, who works as a special education assistant in the Langley School District, sings the praises of the Jumpstart program.

“It is a great way to get your kids involved in sport if you can’t afford the fees. It gives you an idea of the things they might like and it gives you those opportunities,” she said.

“I don’t think we would have done swimming if I didn’t have the help from Jumpstart.” rrr Through the month of June, customers at Canadian Tire can donate $2 to Jumpstart and donors will receive a red ball or puck.

Last year, 700 kids in the Langley area were helped by the Jumpstart program, and since it began in 2005, 3,624 local kids have benefited from the program, and across Canada, 944,710 children have been beneficiaries of the program.

The program is for children between the ages of four and 18 and the money is used to assist with the costs associated with registration, equipment and/or transportation. To apply for funding, visit www.jumpstart.canadiantire.ca/.

public notice Be Wild Animal Aware The Township of Langley is full of wildlife habitat, and residents share the area with animals including bears, cougars, and coyotes.

While residents throughout Langley do not need to be continually on alert, there are a number of actions that can be taken to deter wild animals if they are spotted in your area.

Parents are encouraged to educate their children on what to do if they encounter any of these animals, especially if they play by themselves in areas that wildlife frequent or have been seen in the past.

WARNING Langley has a large deer population

To help people coexist with creatures that are simply trying to survive but can be dangerous if provoked, the following information is offered:

Bears: are looking for food - don’t let them learn it can easily be obtained from humans. If you encounter a bear, do not run. Act big and loud, and back away slowly to a safe place.

Cougars: can have kittens throughout the year, and family groups can be seen at any time. Cougars survive on natural food sources found in the wild, primarily deer.

Cougar attacks on humans are highly unlikely. However, if you encounter a cougar, do not run. Pick children up immediately and talk to the cougar in a confident voice.

Act big by waving sticks and branches, and back away slowly while still facing the cougar. If it attacks, fight back.

Coyotes: have the largest population of potentially dangerous wildlife in the area and can be seen year round, even in residential areas.

Maintain eye contact, pick up small pets or children, and slowly move to an area of increased activity.

In Residential Areas: Reduce the smell of food by keeping barbecues clean.

Keep pet food inside. Garbage is the biggest attraction for bears so keep it secure and inaccessible to wildlife.

Do not leave garbage cans out overnight: keep them in the house, a locked garage, or secured outbuilding that cannot be broken into by large, smart bears. Put them out only on the morning of collection. If you are worried about odour, keep garbage in the freezer until collection day. Do not use bird feeders, as they attract bears and the birds do not need seeds when other natural food sources are available. This is the time of year to be extra vigilant with small pets, especially cats, in areas where coyotes are around.

Protect your investment by keeping fences secure and free of damage that predators can use for access.

Coyotes burrow, so ensure surrounding netting goes deep into the ground. Use electric fencing to deter bears from blueberries and beehives, and pick berries and fruit as they ripen. Be vigilant with livestock and keep them secure. Farm animals are usually killed at night, so bring them inside in the evening.

It is an offence to attract wildlife into a residential neighbourhood.

Those who do not take steps to deter bears and other wild creatures can face a fine of up to $575.

McPhee wins bantamweight belt Aldergrove Star

Show and tell will be extra special for Langley’s Alisah McPhee.

The Abbotsford middle school teacher won by unanimous decision over Peggy Maerz on Saturday (May 23) night at the Rumble at the Rink boxing card in Nanaimo.

The victory earned McPhee the Canadian Professional Boxing Council’s Western Canadian bantamweight belt.

“My students are going to be excited to see this for show and tell,” she said to the ring announcer following the bout.

The fight went the full eight rounds with both combatants connecting repeatedly.

McPhee — who fights out of the City Boxing Club in Langley — said she tried to keep her chin down, stay compact and keep moving laterally.

“I didn’t want to get into a brawl,” she said. “I didn’t want to stay in tight; I knew that’s where danger happens for me. I wanted to make sure that I could keep my range and do what was working for me because it was frustrating her.”

The 34-year-old McPhee improved to 4-1-1 in her career, which began in 2012.

She said the win feels really good because it was a fight she knew would be difficult, and was.

“That’s what this sport is about, getting in and being challenged and I love the challenge,” McPhee said.

The team will then travel to South Korea to prepare for the World Universiade Games, which run July 2 to July 11 in Gwangui. Canada is in a pool with Thailand, Turkey and Zimbabwe.
