Keep your dog We really need to be our dog’s protectors. There’s so much in this world that can scare them.

As a puppy, this is where we can really make them feel comfortable to everything that’s going on around them. This is the time when you can prevent a lifetime of anxiety which leads to fear and biting behaviors.

Before four months of age is when you want to start exposure to hundreds of sights, smells, sounds and people keeping in mind that you protect them from being scared during these experiences. A great place to begin is a puppy kindergarten social (see our website sunrise vet.ca).

Remember these two rules that our grandparents knew and you’ll avoid 90% of bites.

1. “Let sleeping dogs lie” The number one reason for a dog biting is when we startled them when they’re asleep.

2. Don’t mess with your dog’s food once you’ve delivered it to them. We often want to show our dogs who’s the boss and take away their food bowl while they’re eating. I know how I would feel if I waited 20 minutes for my meal and my server snatched it back up from me while I was getting my napkin ready. I would feel anxious and I’d probably bite.

Do this instead. Put the dog food bowl on your counter, take 5 or 10 kibbles in your hand, make your dog sit and look at your eyes by holding the kibble at chin level. Once they’re looking at you

Protecting your calmly feed them 10 to 20% of their dinner this way. Have them wait put the bowl down and say “OK” and turn and walk away.

In fact throw the bowl away and get dog food puzzles that they have to work through to get their kibble. This will give them hours of interesting work. Remember our dogs were made to work. This is why they want to please us so much.

If your dog is experiencing anxiety, fear, hiding, sounds sensitivities, difficulty in the car, barking at strangers or other dogs, showing aggression, get them help. At Sunrise Veterinary Clinic Dr. Stacey Gastis (that’s me) loves to help pets with these difficulties.

Training will not help with these anxieties, they’ll only make it worse. What will help is understanding why your dog is feeling the way they are, what triggers it, and how to change your dogs experience so that they are calm during these episodes. This can be done and not with much difficulty.

Being the boss, being the Alpha dog will only make matters worse! It will scare them more, what we need to do is to

help them be calm.

When looking for any dog trainer sit in on a class without your dog and do a quiet interview seeing if they are kind and compassionate towards the dogs. Stay away from those who use harsh corrections like aggressive pulling of leashes or yelling to scare into submitting.

Do these things. Your doggie will thank you for it.

Feline weight management Feline obesity is a growing problem, one that can lead to numerous health issues such as diabetes & heart disease (both costly to treat). Buddy’s ongoing battle with the bulge….

‘Buddy’ joined the Balanced Paws Team in May of 2013, weighing in at 30 pounds of feline, not the best mascot for a holistic Veterinary clinic. Apparently Buddy is one tough feline and up to the Boot-Camp challenge. In Buddy’s first year with us we managed to get his weight down to a svelte 23 pounds of feline.

The revised Buddy-Boot-Camp for year number 2: Diet: Buddy is still on Purina OM (overweight management) a high protein, low carbohydrate kibble. Buddy thought the raw food was quite uncivilized and would have none of it. That has not changed he still flicks it across the room with distain.

Food dispenser: The Food dispenser,

(rather than free choice feeding) was initially very helpful as Buddy had to work very hard expending may calories to get his kibble. Now however, he is quite adept with the dispenser and can fling it clear across the room and at times even spin the lid off.

He is quite a clever feline.

Exercise: When Buddy first joined us he could climb only about 2 stairs, huffing & puffing. He is now in much better shape which I must say is a bit of a problem. We keep up with his swimming in the summer months; routine on leash walks at the Airpark which does create a bit of a feline spectacle; Laps around Balanced Paws clinic either chasing Jack Russell Terriers (they are his favourite) or asking for free food. All in all

Buddy's story, chapter two much better stamina.

Bathing: Initially Buddy got a bath every couple of weeks, really he was so stinky & dandruffy he was hard to have around. With his recent weight loss Buddy has taken over most of his cleaning & hygiene duties. He can now see his feet and reach them to clean and he has discovered he has a tail. Still a bit tough getting to that lower back & bum area……

As I mentioned his newfound agility is as issue as Buddy is a thief and a carbohydrate junky.

He routinely steals sandwiches, cinnamon buns, opens cupboards & steals liver treats, all of

which work against the diet. Sigh, we love you Buddy but you are a work in progress.

Benefits

Associated with Spay/Neuter in Dogs A very legitimate concern, pet overpopulation, has been the primary driving force behind 30 years of national and local spay/ neuter campaigns.

Dog owners in North America are also advised to spay/neuter their pets for health reasons. A number of health benefits are cited, yet evidence is usually not cited to support the alleged health benefits.

When it comes to deciding at what age a companion animal should be sterilized, the standard for most spay/ neuter campaigns has been sooner rather than later. This is especially true in the case of adoptable abandoned and rescued

pets that wind up in shelters and foster care.

Recently, however, some animal health care experts have begun to question whether early sterilization is a good idea for every pet, and a growing body of research is pointing to early sterilization as the common denominator for development of several canine diseases.

An objective reading of the veterinary medical literature reveals a complex situation; the evidence shows that spay/neuter correlates with both positive AND negative health effects in dogs, and suggests how much we really do not yet understand about this subject.

This article will not discuss the impact of spay/neuter on behaviour, which is also an important consideration for a pet in the family and the community.

On balance, it appears that no compelling case can be made for neutering most male dogs.

On the positive side, neutering male dogs: - eliminates the small risk (< 1%) of dying from testicular cancer reduces the risk of non cancerous prostate disorders - reduces the risk of perianal fistulas - may reduce the risk of diabetes 9 data inconclusive) On the negative side, neutering male dogs - if done before 1 year of age increases the risk of bone cancer. (This is a common cancer in medium and large breeds and some other cancers).

- increases the risk of hypothyroidism -increases the risk of obesity - increases the risk of orthopedic disorders Spay/neuter of immature dogs delays the closure

of the growth plates in bones that are still growing, causing those bones to end up significantly longer than in intact dogs or those spay/ neutered after maturity. This results in a 14 fold increase in unnatural proportions and joint angles, associated with increased incidence of hip and knee diseases.

For female dogs the situation is more complex.

The number of health benefits of spaying may exceed associated health â&#x20AC;Ś On the positive side, spaying female dogs - if done before 2.5 years of age greatly reduces the risk of mammary tumours, their most common malignant tumors - nearly eliminates the risk of uterine infections, which otherwise would affect about 23% of intact females - reduces the risk of perianal fistulas - removes the very small risk (< 0.5%) from uterine, cervical, and ovarian tumours.

Body Language Recognizing some common canine stress signals makes supervising the interactions between kids and dogs much easier.

If your dog shows one of these signals, it is time for you to intervene and suggest an alternate activity. Just because your dog is showing signs of stress, doesn't mean that she's on the verge of aggression. But all behaviour deteriorates under stress--our own and dogs'--so it is important for us to be able to recognize when our dogs need a little help.

Remember that you need to analyze not only your child's intention, but also the dog's perception of every interaction. For example, hugs are intended kindly, but few dogs enjoy them.

Turning Away Often owners think a dog turning away is “blowing them off” and they intensify their demands on her, which is exactly what the dog was trying to avoid.

Half-Moon Eye When a dog is calm and relaxed, you don’t usually see much white around her eyes. The “half-moon” refers to the white arc that is often seen when a dog is stressed and trying to hold it in.

He’ll let our youngest haul him around like a sack of potatoes, and he even performs tricks. He’s just a really good-natured, cooperative guy. - Until it comes to giving him a pill.

Fortunately for Mickey Blue Eyes, we haven’t had a battle of wills for some time. But anyone who has ever tried to give an uncooperative animal a pill will appreciate the art, science and skill of pet medication.

Many clients bring their pets’ prescriptions to a PCCA certified compounding pharmacy because the medication needs to be custom made in a safe environment with carefully inspected and assayed ingredients.

An individual animal may need a dosage that’s not met by a manufactured medication. For example, although they’re the

same species, the weight of a German Shepard is significantly different to that of a Chihuahua. A twentyfive year old mare may require a very different dose than a filly. Imagine the difference between a lizard and a goat!

A compounding pharmacy can also make it so much easier for a cat to take a medicine if it’s flavoured with yummy fish oil. Think Good Nutrition For Healthy Animal?

Every day, there is at least one story in the media that talks about the benefits of good nutrition, a well-balanced diet, exercise, and various supplements that can do this or that for one’s health.

Seldom do these stories talk about the nutrition of animals, however.

Yet, significant resources are spent by animal feed producers all over the country to research and formulate feeds that help animal owners address the nutritioan needs of their animals.

For those raising livestock or poultry intended for human consumption, you should pay special attention to the ingredients in your feed.

You may also want to consider using non-GMO feeds, which are steadily growing in popularity with consumers who are concerned about the genetic modification of food ingredients.

You should also take into consideration the stage of life and activity level of your animals to determine an appropriate feed for them.

Reading labels on domestic pet food is also very important. While there are many lines that also have food for different life stages, there is much variation in the recipes for different brands.

Be sure to read the ingredients and recommended serving size, so you can

make accurate comparisons as not all animal feed is created equally, and basing your buying decision on price may surprise you.

A recent comparison of brands revealed that the bag of dog food from the grocery store recommended 8-9 cups of food for a Labrador retriever.

A premium brand, with more protein than carbs, recommended only 3 cups of feed for the same dog.

Without reading the bag

carefully, however, many consumers are tempted by the price point and don’t realize that they really need to use three times as much of the lower cost dog food as the premium brand.

What seems to be a big price spread is really not so big when you consider the recommended serving size difference. And, that doesn’t take into consideration the mix of ingredients with the premium brands often having higher protein

ingredients than the lower-cost, carb-heavy brands.

The bottomline is to read the labels carefully, compare products on more than price, and ask questions of at your animal feed store so you can be sure you get the best food for your animals’ health…and your own (in the case of farm animals raised for food).

8th Annual Pet Lovers Lane Strengthening the On Saturday, June 27th Simms Millennium Park will once again be transformed into the Pet Lovers Lane Trade Show.

All pets are welcomed, and the majority seems to be friendly leashed dogs.

There will be games to play, speakers to learn from, music to dance to and many prizes to be won.

A good idea is to walk your dog through the Park before the exciting day. Practice your basics of sit, stay, come, walk on a loose leash.

You and your dog will have a stronger relationship bond if you practice at the Park before all those wonderful distractions appear.

On the day of all the fun - remember that dogs communicate primarily through body language. If your dog is held on a short and tight leash, your dog's ability to communicate effectively and safely is greatly reduced. Keep that leash loose.

The usual doggy greeting is nose-to-tail and they will walk around in a circle - first one way, then the other. You should also be walking in circles as you follow your dog being very careful to keep that leash slack but also out of the way.

On-leash greetings are safest for most dogs if kept to 3-5 seconds. Tell your dog how good s/he is and

avoid adding stress to the greeting by saying things like "be nice". Praise raining down from the human end of the leash goes a long way in keeping the stress of a greeting to a minimum.

After the 3-5 seconds, call your dog away. Tension on the leash creates tension in the dog, so avoid pulling your dog away but rather call, wait and move slightly

away - chances are your dog will follow you, and you can then be proud of the bond you have with your dog!

Equipment such as the halti, prong/pinch/choke or shock collars are very dangerous for both the dog wearing them and the greeting dog. The halti can prevent effective communication and the other collars inflict pain and also increase

the chance of injury to the greeting dog's face.

Avoid dogs wearing this equipment as the human/ dog bond is most likely lacking and the chance of a happy, successfully safe doggy greeting is greatly reduced.
