ALL FOR LESS THAN A PREMIUM PRICE! My husband and I decided to re-face our kitchen cabinets. We got a quote from a big box store and a cabinet re-facing company. Their price was out-to-lunch! A friend of mine referred me to Mike at Premium Cabinets. He came to our home, did the kitchen lay-out, helped us pick our colour and door style, crown moulding, and new handles. We also had them build us a pantry wall cabinet, and they also installed granite counter tops. We love our kitchen, and Mike! Pat & Bob, Kelowna

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY does your body good
Go play outside! There’s nothing better than lots of fresh air to reenergize young bodies. Encouraging your children to get outdoors and play is a great way to preserve their good health or to get them in better shape. Aside from bike rides, long hikes in the fresh air, or even roller blading and playgrounds, there are many other activities that could entice your children to leave their cherished video games for long enough to go outside. Usually, it’s just a question of tapping into one’s imagination. If your children are younger than ten years old, a treasure hunt is sure to be a hit. To create the hunt, make full use of all the natural elements in your backyard. Timing how long it takes them to go through the course will encourage them to run faster and improve their times. A home grown Ironman race is fun for slightly older children. Of course, instead of running and biking tens of kilometres, you can organize sprints. This can be done even in dull To keep your children healthy, encourage them to play outside in all kinds of weather.
spring weather. In summer, a swimming segment can be included as well, featuring a jumping competition in the local pool. If you don’t have the time to organize this type of activity, there are some readymade classics for you to try. Encourage your children to play hockey or basketball with the neighbours. Skipping ropes and hopscotch are old play-yard favourites that deserve dusting off and being taught to the younger generation. If you can’t seem to come up with any other good ideas, you can always rely on the creativity of your children. If your boys and girls want to run around the yard playing superhero or chasing each other with magic wands, so much the better, as long as they’re moving! So, say goodbye to TV and video games: the great outdoors is calling.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITES IN KELOWNA BICYCLING Kelowna is seriously cycle friendly with more than 240km/149mi of bicycle lanes on city streets, greenspace bike paths and mountain biking trails. MISSION CREEK GREENWAY Mission Creek Greenway is the longest and most popular cycling path in Kelowna. Ride the easy gravel Phase 1 trail beneath cottonwood trees along the banks of an important Kokanee Salmon spawning stream. Phase 1 runs 7.3km/4.5mi from Mission Creek Regional Park to Okanagan Lake. MOUNTAIN BIKING The KVR Trail, which is part of the Trans-Canada trail, is the best-known ride near Kelowna. Gentle grades on this former rail-bed make it an easy ride for everyone. Ride the 12 km/7.5mi section between the former Ruth and Myra Stations and marvel at the 16 wood-frame trestles, two steel bridges, and two tunnels it required to rim Myra Canyon. Many of these structures were destroyed in the 2003 Okanagan Mountain Park fire, but have been reconstructed. Riders in search of more extreme action with steep climbs, jumps, and stunts can check out terrain at Okanagan Mountain Park, Gillard Trails, and Crawford Trails in Kelowna. Across Okanagan Lake in West Kelowna, Powers Creek, Smith Creek and Rose Valley are popular spots, as are Knox Mountain and McDougal Rim. Ask at the Kelowna tourist visitor centre for bicycle route maps. Staff can also provide directions to popular bike paths and mountain biking areas, and information on cycling tours. HIKING Varied landscapes, panoramic views, and historic sites make for infinitely interesting hikes around Kelowna. In the city, walkways follow the shoreline of Okanagan Lake, run along the cottonwood-lined riparian zone bordering Mission Creek, climb the flanks of Knox Mountain and run through pocket nature preserves. South of the city, hike the tough trails of Okanagan Mountain Provincial Park. Across the lake in West Kelowna, explore pathways with a different perspective. KELOWNA TRAILS Trails around Kelowna lead to lookouts, waterfalls, historic irrigation flumes, abandoned homesteader’s cabins, unique volcanic formations and the deep forest. Most are designed for day hikes, although there are longer overnight routes like the High Rim Trail that stretches 50km/31mi from Kelowna through Lake Country to Kalamalka Provincial Park south of Vernon. MISSION CREEK GREENWAY Mission Creek Greenway is the longest and most popular trail in Kelowna. Phase 1 of the trail is an easy gravel route running 7.3km/4.5mi along the banks of a significant Kokanee Salmon spawning stream from Mission Creek Regional Park to Okanagan Lake. The 9.2km/5.7mi Phase 2 trail has more challenging sections and follows the creek eastward from the Mission Creek Regional Park into Gallagher’s Canyon. KETTLE VALLEY RAILWAY (KVR) TRAIL The KVR Trail, which is part of the Trans-Canada trail, is an easy high-country walk. The 12km/7.5mi section of the trail between the former Ruth Station and Myra Station features reconstructed woodframe trestles, two steel bridges, and two tunnels. Bring a camera to capture the valley views. BEAR CREEK PROVINCIAL PARK Hike the easy trail among the cottonwood trees along the creek at Bear Creek Provincial Park. Continue up into the ponderosa pine grasslands above the canyon (more challenging) for excellent views of Bear Creek Falls and a panorama of Okanagan Lake. Total distance 5km/3mi. Continue up into the ponderosa pine grasslands above the canyon for excellent views of Bear Creek Falls and a panorama of Okanagan Lake WEST KELOWNA TRAILS West Kelowna offers tremendous variety of terrain. Walk the flat pathway around the rim of Gellatly Bay to Gellatly Nut Farm, Canada’s first commercial nut farm and now a regional park. Explore forest and grassland trails in Rose Valley, Glen Canyon and Kalamoir Regional Parks. Climb the heights of Mount Boucherie, an extinct volcano, and take in the panoramic views. PRACTICAL POINTS Dry grasslands are habitat for western rattlesnakes – exercise caution. Black bears are found at lower elevations and on the sub-alpine slopes. The wilderness area of the Monashee Mountains is grizzly bear habitat: hikers should carry bear spray and make enough noise to have their presence known.

KELOWNA BEACHES & PARKS KELOWNA: Cedar Creek Park This long and narrow pebble beach is well known and quite unique to the Okanagan. Picnic tables are available and portable washrooms are on site. Cedar Creek is Kelowna’s only dog friendly waterfront park. Gyro Beach Arguably one of Kelowna’s most well known beaches in Kelowna, Gyro is a favourite hang out for families and the younger sun-lovers. Snack venues, a rope swing, volleyball courts, playgrounds, inflatable waterpark, watersport rentals, picnic areas and washroom facilities provide summertime fun for every age. Hot Sands Beach - City Park Located at the centre of the Kelowna’s downtown core, City Park and Hot Sands Beach are always buzzing with excitement and activity. Enjoy the park’s long sandy beaches, volleyball and basketball courts, grassy fields, playground, waterpark, skateboard park, and washroom and changeroom facilities. Take a stroll along the boardwalk and check out the many local vendors and buskers, or chow down on a tasty burger and ice cream at the snack bar. During the summer months, live music is often scheduled on the Parks Alive! stage and the occasional movie under the stars takes place in the common field. With on-site rentals and surrounded by downtown Kelowna’s many restaurants and retail stores, you will never run out of things to do and see at City Park & Hot Sands Beach! Kinsmen Park Tall leafy trees and large grassy areas, give Kinsmen Park the perfect amount of sun and shade. Dip your feet into Lake Okanagan, have lunch at one of the picnic tables, play a round of tennis or enjoy the on-site playground while taking in the Okanagan heat. Kinsmen Park is fully equipped with washrooms for your convenience. Rotary Beach Park Rotary Park has designated swimming areas, change rooms, playgrounds, picnic areas and shade trees. Known for its kite boarding and wind surfing, Rotary is the ideal spot to enjoy your favourite water sport. On-site rentals as well as fine dining and plenty of accommodations nearby make this beach a hot spot for tourists and locals alike! And if it’s a windy day, this beach is a popular spot for kite-surfers. Bring your camera! Sarson’s Beach Park This neighborhood beach sits off Lakeshore Road on the corner of Hobson and Sarson Road. Its smaller size gives the park a homey feel. A playground is located on site, and in addition, picnic tables, designated swimming areas and washroom facilities are offered. Strathcona Park Located next to the Kelowna General Hospital, Strathcona Park has designated swimming areas, picnic tables, public washrooms and a playground for the young at heart. Surrounded by tall oak trees, its large grassy area provides the perfect setting to curl up with a good book or relax with friends and family. Sutherland Park Located at the corner of Broadway Avenue and Ellis Street, Sutherland Park sits at the base of Knox Mountain and is perfect for those who love to be active. In addition to the grassy fields and kid friendly playground this park is equipped with tennis courts, washroom facilities and is only two steps away from the many pedestrian and bike trails Knox Mountain has to offer. Swimming at Sutherland Park is not recommended due to poor water quality. Tugboat Bay - Waterfront Park Located at the heart of the city, Waterfront Park has unbeatable views of Lake Okanagan, sandy beaches, beautifully landscaped gardens, washroom facilities, paddle boat rentals and boat launches. Observe Kelowna’s diverse wildlife that inhabit the Rotary Marshes located at the north end of the beach. Take a stroll, or enjoy the delicious restaurants, located along the boardwalk which follows the waters edge all the way to City Park. If you’re lucky, you may even catch some local talent on the Island performance stage. WEST KELOWNA Bear Creek Provincial Park The swim area is narrow, marked by buoys and covers over 400 metres of coarse sandy beach lakeshore. There are also grassy areas, picnic spots and change rooms in the day use area of the provincial park. Gellatly Nut Farm This historic nut farm also has a swimming beach! Large shade trees, a small rock beach with a gradual slope into the water, grass and a playground nearby make this a perfect off the beaten path swimming beach to enjoy. Marina Park This park has a pebble beach, a grass area, a covered picnic facility and a playground. It is perfect for those with small children as both the park and beach areas are fenced in.

Camping with all the comforts of home Do you love being out in the wilderness but don’t particularly appreciate camping in the wild? Then, luxury camping is for you. Here are a few tips on how to enjoy its pleasures. GLAMPING The phenomenon of glamping — luxury camping — is increasingly common. Yurts, teepees, gypsy-inspired caravans, and highend trailers: comfy camping is gaining ground. Some hosts provide bedding, while other locations are more oriented toward the conventional camping crowd; for those spots you’ll need to bring an inflatable mattress with you. Place upon it your open sleeping bag, then add sheets, blankets, and pillows, and you’re all set. TASTY MEALS Even though hotdogs and sandwiches are standard camping fare, there’s nothing to prevent you from concocting more sophisticated meals. Just
remember that the cooking of gourmet meals when camping requires a bit of forethought. Prepare meats and vegetables in advance, and bring a few frozen meals that can be stored in a cooler, which is now your fridge on the go. For your breakfasts, plan on making pancakes with maple syrup; eggs and bacon; muesli and fresh fruit; or banana bread with yoghurt. For your lunches, enjoy tuna rolls; bagels and smoked salmon; or a hearty soup. For your suppers, prepare steaks with tinfoil packets of diced potatoes and onions; cheese fondue; pesto pasta; grilled chicken with rice, corn on the cob, and salad. Make sure you bring a couple bottles of your favourite wine. Yummy! Now all you need for your trip into the woods is the company of some loved ones or friends!
Filling the cooler: some tips for summer camping Are you getting ready for a camping vacation? Here are some tips for making the most of your cooler. BEFORE LEAVING HOME • Use a large, well-insulated cooler with a lid and a drain plug. • Store foods in airtight containers or zip-closure storage bags. If necessary, double-layer the packaging. • Freeze prepared foods and drinks before you’re due to leave. This will help to keep the cooler cold during your camping trip. • Buy blocks of ice, as they’ll last longer than ice cubes. • Place meats and dairy products next to the ice. • Store drinks in a second cooler. AT THE CAMPGROUND • The cover of the cooler should be kept tightly closed at all times; open it
only when necessary to keep the blocks of ice intact for as long as possible. • Keep the cooler in a shady area, away from the sun. • Try not to drain the water out of the cooler as the ice melts; the cool water will continue to help keep the food cold. • Store the cooler in your vehicle overnight or when you’re away from the campsite; this keeps it away from wild animals, some of whom have figured out how to open coolers! Even if you have a camping stove, it is possible to cook on a campfire as well. Just be sure to check current restrictions about campfires first. Don’t cook the food in the flames, but rather on a grill, over hot coals. Portioning out the food into aluminum foil packages and cooking it over the coals is another fun way to cook when camping.
