Pool open: The Rimbey Aquatic Centre has two new assistant managers this year. Hayley Lush, an experienced senior lifeguard, who has worked at Rimbey Aquatic Centre previously will be responsible for opening the pool during the week and also teach Red Cross swimming lessons.

Mark Hawkings, a graduate from Rimbey High School, who is also a lifeguard, will look after staff scheduling and will work mostly evenings and weekends.

Council may reinstate compost pick up for the residents of the Town of Rimbey

Rimbey residents may have their compost pickup reinstated, but it won’t happen immediately.

A surprise motion

by Mayor Rick Pankiw at last Monday’s meeting to reinstate the pickup program was tabled after public works director Rick Schmidt said it would be impossible to move ahead on it at once.

“I can’t do anything right out of the chute,” he said. “The truck needs repairs and we need to get pricing for a place to store the compost and the bins for the residents.”

In his motion, Pankiw said council has researched several options for composting.

“One possibility would have the residents purchase a small garbage can with a hole to drain out the moisture. These cans could be dumped into the truck by public works and the compost hauled to our recycle centre where we could dump it onto the pad that we used to use for garbage and have our skid steer push it into the compost bin below.’

“This would reduce the time it takes for public works to open the bags,” he said.

Using a garbage can would be more environmentally friendly than using garbage bags, he said.

Council agreed communication with the public was lacking when the decision was made to cancel the compost pickup.

The mayor thanked the residents for voicing their opinions, noting council was never opposed to composting, which is why they put the bins at the recycling centre.

At a previous meeting, Rimbey residents presented a petition signed by 570 town residents to council asking that the compost pick up be re-instated.

Along with the petition, several concerns regarding the program were read by Shirley Pobuda on behalf of Coers, who was unable to attend the meeting.

The sun was like a hot brick of molten gold, slowly pouring itself out of a faultless blue sky.

In other words, it was really hot, much hotter than is usual for the month of May where such benevolent heat from the sun is usually doled out in stingy little amounts.

I was surprised, but not unpleasantly so. I admired my daughter’s cool wrap-around sunglasses, momentarily wishing they were wrapped around my eyes protecting my very undesigner-like crows feet from taking over my whole face like a horrifying maze.

But, they weren’t and I quickly made the choice, no doubt the correct one, not to waste time lamenting the fact that I had no sunglasses. I chose, instead to mentally check off ‘feel the

hats, jackets, lunch, sippy cups, snacks, extra shorts, sunscreen, bug spray, sandals, three movies, juice boxes, blankets, colouring books, crayons, music and, of course, the three boys!

I looked at it all and was amazed.

My daughter glanced at the rear view mirror and saw that her little world was in order and put the wheels of her SUV in motion. The older boys were watching a movie and the baby was placidly sucking his soother. The howls and wails which would erupt from his tiny self would not come until we were fooled into thinking he would simply nod off to sleep like little dolls and good babies do by the motion of the moving vehicle.

He did not!

We had hardly gotten underway when my daughter’s phone beeped. “You

forgot your purse,” her husband texted.

“Oh, I did not,” she said somewhat haughtily! “It’s in that bag under the strawberries and the juice boxes and the books and the diapers.”

“Of course,” I murmured. “That’s where I’d put it, for sure.”

We drove. The baby howled and only quit crying when grandma practically stood on her head to retrieve his soother from the last place he had thrown it.

Ha, ha, ha! Grandma’s funny! I thought longingly of the gym where I only had to perform sit-ups and leg lifts and pushups. Easy stuff!

But, of course, right on cue, the baby quit crying as soon as the wheels stopped turning and he was lifted out of his car seat.

It turned out to be a day complete with generous

helpings of fun, laughter and happy sun burst surprises. Later, we sat at an outdoor café having supper.

The sun, still warm on our skin, was fading into the softness of twilight.

It was then, in the falling shadows, that I saw her.

She wore blue jeans and her shoulder length dark hair was pulled into a careless ponytail. A little boy, one hand on the stroller, trotted along beside her. An old man, dirty and unshaved, watched them, his face full of longing and sadness.

“You are so lucky,” he said to the young woman, who dismissed him and his words with a polite smile.

The image fades and I’m back in the present, but just for a moment I remembered the old man and his words.

I was young, then, too young. I really didn’t get it!

But I do now!

Sometimes, but not always, I’m mature like that and can flip my thoughts on a dime.

On a bad day, however, I might not be so quick to do the gratitude thing and find myself coveting those darn sunglasses all day.

But, not today!

Today, it was relatively easy to slip up the illusive sliding scale of happiness to pretty close to the top simply because of the little people I had in my company.

I was with three little boys, all of whom call me grandma, except for the baby, of course. The baby has only just turned one, and doesn’t call me anything as of yet, but I know that he knows I am his grandma because when I pick him up he puts his little arms around my neck and buries his head in my shoulder and then he pats me.

Would he do that to just any grandma like person? I think not!

Anyway, the children, the children’s mom and me, the grandma were all at the children’s festival in Calgary.

We came for the day, so my daughter packed lightly.

Three car seats, one stroller, diapers, wipes,

I had followed her through a job change and through the new job’s location change. It was a relationship built on trust, honesty, and repetition that last for several years. Invitations were received to attend her birthday parties — she even started bringing her car to me at the shop for

regular servicing. A bond was formed. However, I was discombobulated when my hair dresser decided, last year, that she had enough and hung up her scissors.

What that meant was, she had taken a job as an instructor at the MC College in Red Deer and stopped working as a conventional hair stylist.

What followed was total follicle anarchy: bad haircuts from clipper massacring walk-in-noappointment-required hair studios. My hair and I had become lost souls, dishevelled and disorganized, appearing in the streets like a bad Billy Idol doppelganger. Was I to start shaving my head again? Or worse grow it out without maintenance? Could I find

respite? Could my mane regain civility?

It was mystical fortune had shed light into a corner between the Rimbey Co-op hardware and grocery store.

A scared place was found within my kingdom’s own boundaries and I was already known on a first name basis when I entered. Where there is styling clays, jells, and sprays there is hope. It was in this corner that I was awarded fresh confidence after traveling through the dark world of second rate hair dressing and found a new place to get my hair cut.

It came time again — to receive another haircut and without thought I moseyed over to the Co-op to make an appointment. I felt off and sensed a change when

I pulled into the parking lot. While idling through the parking stalls, my conscious had this overwhelming feeling that some exterior force was guiding a perplexing realignment. A flash of insight came upon me — the angle parking in front of the Co-op has been abolished and replaced with the boxy parking patterns of Wal-Mart.

The jumble of change was not limited to the discovery of a new hair stylist and the parking lot structure of the Co-op. A new neighbour has emerged on my avenue and I was informed with a very official letter from the town.

Within the letter a location description was provided with attached photographs of a mobile home

that was to be moved onto my avenue. I must have appeared frantic and insane, from the perspectives of my current neighbours, when I stumbled into the streets clutching the letter and wearing only sweat pants seeking the location of 4601-51st Avenue. Luckily much critical thought determined that the empty lot that once held the green trailer (of reckless and sinful activity) was to be location of my new neighbour.

The letter from the town stated that a “fee of $250” would have to be submitted with any written appeals to the development permit. I am not against a new neighbour. I am, however, against poor haircuts and paying any sum of money to get my words heard.

Council highlights for Mon., May 25 meeting

Mowing contracted to Lions Club At its regular meeting Mon. May 25 council agreed to contract the Rimbey Lions Club to mow the ball diamonds at a cost of $15,000. The funding is to come from recreation reserves. The program will be re-evaluated next year.

Skateboard Park to go ahead Council has directed administration to sign a contract between Rimbey Kinsmen Club, the Town of Rimbey and New Line Skatepark Inc. so the skateboard park can be built. The Kinsmen Club has raised $135,000 cash and has in-kind donations of $187,000 and has made a progress payment of $35,000, leaving $91,000 owing. Council agreed to back the Kinsmen to pay outstanding funds if required. “It will be nice to have something like this go ahead,� said Coun. Paul Payson.

A maximum of $290,000 from special projects and any additional funding from recreational reserves would be used by council, if needed.

Funding discussion postponed Council agreed to postpone discussion regarding the donation of $500 to the Rimbey Exhibition Association for their 50th rodeo on July 10, 11 and 12 until the July 27 regular council meeting.

Health and Fitness Day declared Mayor Rick Pankiw proclaimed June 6 as national Health and Fitness Day in Rimbey.

Declaring the first Saturday in June to be National Health and Fitness Day will further encourage Canadians to participate in physical activities and contribute to their own health and well-being.

More than 160 runners signed up for the full marathon, 750 runners are scheduled to take part in the half marathon and the 10 k event has been sold out since March.

Marsha Lush from Bentley has competed in the 10K since its inception at the Woody’s event four years ago. This year she came in fifth out of 305 female runners, seventh out of 131 women in her age category and 28th out of the 448 runners who competed in the run.

“I have been running since I was a kid and I run an average of four times a week anywhere from five to 10 km at a time.

Running has many benefits. It strengthens muscles and bones, improves cardiovascular fitness, is a stress reliever and assists in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

The Woody’s race is well organized and scenic as it encompasses Red Deer city trails, she added.

Also competing in the 10 k from Bentley school were Myrna Robinson, Kelsey Ruttan and Jill Howe.

Mike Sonnenberg and Travis Wessener competed in the half marathon.

This year’s event included a kid’s race which gave youngsters a chance to complete the last 1.2 k of their marathon quest on race day. The marathon also included a relay race where two runners team up to complete the full marathon course.

This year organizers set up ‘tent city’ a special place along the route where a number of local vendors and sponsors can showcase their business, upcoming races and other promotional items.

Grade 11 and 12 students from Bentley worked at a water stations along the race and the Grade 12s’ won best water station.

For months now I have stood idle to the gossip, rumormongers, coffee shop claims, Internet slandering and most recently an article in the Review.

This week, Rimbey RCMP Detachment responded to over 40 calls for service including stolen vehicles, break and enter, thefts, frauds, domestic disputes, drugs, mail box theft and vandalism, impaired drivers and many other serious matters.

RCMP charge man with multiple thefts Last week, we reported on investigations relating to stolen vehicles in our area.

On Friday, Rimbey Mounties made an arrest and charged a local 26-year old man with multiple charges relating to these thefts, including a $60,000 motor home that was recovered west of Highway 22. When police took him down, he was found to be in possession of a large amount of methamphetamine while working on a truck that he had stolen from the Airdrie area. In addition to the criminal charges for auto theft, he is also charged with possession for the

purpose of trafficking illicit drugs.

Man faces huge fines A local man currently on bail and awaiting court for breaking into a residence last May was observed driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee in Rimbey. The attentive officer stopped the 24-year-old driver for a traffic offence and requested his documents. The man was found to have never had a driver’s license and also had no registration or insurance.

These fines alone total over $4,000. Not surprisingly, the officer also seized illegal drugs from the vehicle that was impounded. The accused will appear in court on July 3, 2015 to answer to the new charges as well as the old.

Female charged with possession of new illegal drug Your local detachment was extremely busy this week working tirelessly on reducing the illegal drugs in the community. Several search warrants were authorized by a Judge in relation to drug investigations. Not only did police seize meth this week, disturbingly a local 20-year-old female was arrested and charged for possession of illegal drugs.

When she was captured, she had a new drug in her possession called “shatter”.

Shatter is a new drug in

Canada and the USA that is a highly addictive, potent drug made from marihuana. Shatter is the end result of a chemical process which draws the THC out of marihuana and puts it in a highly concentrated toffee looking product. It sells on the street for the same price as cocaine in most areas. This is the first time it has been seen by police in Rimbey. In addition, the accused was in possession of a collapsible baton, similar to the one police officers carry for protection. This young lady and her 23 year old boyfriend were also charged with break and enter and other criminal offences. Both accused persons are very well known to police.

Vehicle impounded An officer patrolling near the school observed a local 21 year old male driving a family sedan with a young lady and her 5 year old child in the passenger seats. Police stopped the driver as he is known to not have a driver’s license.

Not only has he never had a driver’s license, he had no insurance. The man has been charged and Children and Family Services notified. The vehicle was also impounded.

Two Bentley School students, who caught the eye of scouts at a zone tournament, have been selected to represent the province on the Alberta Handball Youth Team.

Grade 12 students Alyssa Hyink and Grade 10 student Ian Lush were notified May 25 that they had been chosen for the team.

Practices began last weekend and will continue throughout the summer.

The team will fly to Hamburg, Germany to compete August 12 to 22.

After the competition in Germany, practices will continue into the fall and winter. The team will then compete in Reykjavik, Iceland Dec. 26 to Jan. 5.

Lush and Hyink were scouted by the Alberta Team Handball Federation at a zone handball tournament held in Wainwright April 17 and 18. Tryouts were held May 23 and 24 at the University of Alberta’s education gymnasium.

Coach Steven Lush is proud of his athletes noting, “They have done extremely well.”

Lush has been coaching handball for 18 years. During his tenure as coach at Bentley School, the school has won four provincial championship banners and two bronze awards. They have also hosted a provincial championship.

The Canadian National Handball Team will compete in the Pam Am Games in Toronto July 10 to 26. The two top place finishers will compete in the next summer Olympics.

Terry Hoganson appointed as Bluffton School principal Terry Hoganson has been appointed as the new principal of Bluffton School, effective at the beginning of the 2015-2016 school year.

Terry was born and raised in Whitehorse, Yukon. After completing high school he continued his education at Red Deer College before completing a Bachelor of Education (Physical Education Major and History Minor) at the University of Alberta. Terry moved to Calgary, Alberta in 2001 to start his teaching career at Rundle Academy, a private school for kids diagnosed with an academic learning disability. In the fall of 2012, Terry moved back to Central Alberta to become the assistant principal at Ecole Lacombe Junior High School. Terry has been involved in athletics all his life and looks forward to coaching a new group of athletes in Bluffton and getting involved in all the other amazing extra-curricular events that happen in the Bluffton community. He is in the process of completing his Masters of Education with Gonzaga University.

If you don’t want to be disgruntled don’t break the law.

In your critique, you claim knowledge of traffic enforcement issues yet unwittingly deliver two contradictory paragraphs making the letter unintentionally humorous. How does two warnings for you, three for your high profile buddy, a ticket for parking on the wrong side in Gull Lake and a ticket for a 70-year-old speed demon equate to a vast majority observing the 50K speed limit? Did three people somehow get warnings for doing the speed limit? Where are the law-abiding citizens? Furthermore, does the article intend to infer that you have precise knowledge of how fast citizens of this town drive? Have you taken time to man radar?

I also feel your comment regarding protecting and serving was lost in translation.

The officers should be thanked for saving us from your farm resident friend while hiding in the bushes.

Imagine what a welcome that would have been had she hit someone’s innocent child while exceeding the speed limit? I find it increasingly disturbing that the of-

ficers are outlawed when it is the individual that makes their own decision to break the law while it’s the officer’s job to enforce it. The officers didn’t make her speed, they simply caught her.

In closing my synopsis of your letter is as follows: A moral, ethical person who sat on council and recently sought another elected position in this town attempts to discredit the peace officers and administrators while soliciting the mayor to make a sharp about turn on his vision, effort and integrity as an elected official, to make the blooming town of Rimbey a better place to live; all so you and a select group of citizens can get traffic warnings forever.

These are simply exigent requests to continue a community of endless reminders and cheek turning to broken laws. The same laws that are the foundation our society is built upon and essential to a strong community.

If you want to be a leader in the community then lead by example. Obey the law and show these officers that they would be welcome in this community because they are doing their job.

Bentley school performs spoof on play ‘Rapunzel’

A total of 45 Bentley school students from grades 1-12 were involved with the Missoula Children’s Theatre performance based on the classic Rapunzel story in the Bentley high school gymnasium.

The Missoula Children’s Theatre (MCT) has been coming to Bentley school for many years. This year the tour actor/directors for MCT were Ted Drury and Morgan Maul-Smith.

Elementary school administrative assistant Jacquie Ruud has helped bring in and coordinate the event for a number of years. It is paid for with funds from Milk, Hot Dog, Subway Days, Popcorn Days and the Hot Lunch program that students purchase she indicated.

Auditions were held May 4 after school and continued all week. Auditions are open to all and some students audition each year MCT comes.

The Korey and Brenda Von Kuster family hosted the tour directors for the week.

The Saturday afternoon May 9 performance was well attended.

“The afternoon performance seems to work better for many people (than an evening performance),” stated Ruud.

She also noted, “MCT has been coming to Bentley School for over 20 years. Many students have performed every year, Grade 1-12.”

Of special note was the wonderful job local Grade 12 student Domenica Schunk did as accompanist throughout the entire musical production.

All costumes, props and the background as well as additional lighting were brought by MCT. The backdrop was colorful and unique. Interestingly, it could very easily transition between the top of Rapunzel’s tower and action at ground level by simply sliding curtains across and turning the “tower”.

The characters of Rapunzel and the prince were shared between two actors.

There were a number of mushrooms, wood elves, pixies, gremlins, ogres, the three bears, three Billy goats gruff, and unicorns. There was also a troll, a beaver, a potato and two ears of corn, Fun Gus and Madame Gothel who had control over Rapunzel, and Maurice and Monique who were Rapunzel’s parents. Three students also helped as assistant directors.

The ‘frivolous frolic through the French countryside’ lasted just over an hour.

Costumes were packed up after the performance and ready to move on to the next location. Such organization and scheduling is difficult to match anywhere.

field said the game saw the skills of all-star players in the north division pitted against all-star players from the south division.

The north division allstars, which included six Rimbey players, coach Bramfield and assistant coach Jared Robertson came from behind 25–16 to win the game 60-35.

“We made half time adjustments,” said Bramfield.

“The boys did a good job. It is a strong team.”

The all-star rooster includes Rimbey players Kyle Goodspeed, Travis Hunt, Lane Franklin, Bryce Sargeant, Cory Cech, Carson Lukocs, Doug Buist and team captain, Randy Maconochie.

Rhett Bramfield is the team runner.

Doug Buist, who made

three interceptions during the game, was named the most valuable player and Carson Lukocs scored two touchdowns.

Bramfield said this year marked the first ever all-star provincial game and he is confident it will become an annual event.

He said the teams practiced together during the weekend before coming together for the game held on May 18.

Now the all-star game is behind them and the Spartans are already on the practice field, gearing up for an exhibition game against Breton in Breton on June 12.

The Rimbey High School football team has proved themselves to be a force to be reckoned with on the field.

For the last two years they have been provincial winners and have not lost a game in that time frame.

But Bramfield doesn’t believe in focusing on past successes, but wants the Spartans to look ahead and continue to be a champion football team.

Next year the Spartans will lose all-star players Randy Maconochie, Doug Buist and Lane Franklin as the boys are now Grade 12 students.

However, Bramfield said the team will forge ahead and new players are always adding force and strength on the field.

“We plan to be competitive again. We’ve had a good run, but now it’s all about what’s in front of us.”

Teacher at Bluffton school retires A chapter is closing at Bluffton School, when the end of June arrives and Mary Colclough moves into retirement.

Miss Mary Dunn began her career in the Grade 5 classroom at Rimbey Elementary School in 1978 and then following her marriage to Beauchamp and taking some time off with the birth of their twin daughters Denielle and Sarah in 1984, Mary made the move to Bluffton School in 1989 to begin a much respected Resource Room Program.

Mary’s classroom has been in a variety of places over the years, from the hallway boot room – where kids tore in and out during recess time and boots and shoes littered the floor, to teaching in the kitchen where every Thursday on Hot Dog Day the delicious aroma of boiled wieners was the ambience Mary and her students got to enjoy! No matter the location, the kids treasured their time working with Mrs. C There were incredible stories of success coming out of that classroom! Another huge project Mary perfected was the “Kids Conference”.

This was an amazing effort of organization and coordination that left students and staff in awe of her multi-faceted planning ability. Mary has taught every grade and subject matter possible and has spent her last couple of years working as a Teacher/Librarian at Bluffton School. There have also been countless volunteer hours spent cataloging and organizing books so our students and teachers are able to enjoy our small school library.

Now Mary and Beauchamp can look forward to spending time with their new precious granddaughter and of course they are very busy volunteering and working with various community groups.

Thank you, Mary for your years of commitment and dedication to Bluffton School.

Amendment to Land Use By-Law 7-08-LU The Council of Ponoka County has been asked by Darren Weening to amend Land Use By-Law 7-08-LU as follows: Reclassify approximately 38 acres of the SW 7-42-1-W5 from Agricultural District to Country Residential (Hobby Farm) District to allow for subdivision of the rezoned area (1 new parcel to be created).

Before considering the by-law, Council will hold a Public Hearing at which any person claiming to be affected may ask questions or make comments. This hearing is scheduled for 10:15 a.m. on Tuesday, June 9, 2015 in the Council Chambers of the County Administration Building.

Rimbey and District old Timers’ Assoc. to hold 60th anniversary celebration

Sixty years ago a few community minded residents who wanted to see an old timers’ association get off the ground decided to get together and make it happen.

The primary purpose of the association was to maintain strong ties with people from near and far.

The group nominated William Gwinn as president and Mabel Mellis as secretary. Irene Wright was the treasurer. The membership fee was $1.

The organizational meeting was held in the town office and Gladys Johnson, past president noted that the reunions were to be held on the last Monday in June at 2 p.m.

“That was written in stone,” she said with a laugh.

It was also moved and carried at the organizational meeting that any person who was in the west before 1920 be classified as an old timer.

On April 1994 the definition of an old timer was amended to include anyone who likes to meet old friends, share old memories, make new friends and share new experiences.

Murray Ormberg, who is currently president of the Rimbey & District Old Timers’ Association has modified that definition, somewhat.

“If you’ve been in Rimbey for 24 hours you are classified as an old timer,” he said.

Ormberg, with the help of past president Gladys Johnson and committee members is in the process of organizing this year’s homecoming, which marks the 60th anniversary of the Rimbey & District old Timers’ Association.

It is to be a gala event, with a huge birthday cake and a map of Rimbey as it was in 1955 taking in Ferguson Feed Service and the Rimbey Hospital.

Throughout its 60 year history, association committee members have remained committed to bringing people together at the reunion by providing a weekend of visiting, reminiscing, fun and sharing.

The first reunion held in 1955 attracted 97 people.

The 37th year the event was held, 136 people regis-

tered, seven of whom were from outside of Alberta.

Mrs. Spinks, 97, was the oldest lady present and ninety-two-year old Clyde Wilson was the oldest man.

In 1994, one hundred and eighty-five people attended the reunion held Monday, June 27.

That year the pancake breakfast was held at the

Grand Hotel. Ragna Olson of Rimbey and Mrs. Martin from Rocky Mountain House, both 87, tied for being the oldest ladies present.

At 94, Clyde Wilson was the oldest man.

Last year the Rimbey & District Old Timers’ Association Reunion proved to be another popular event punctuated with lots of laughter,

hugs and even as few tears as old friends, many of whom had been long separated by time and distance, got together.

Close to 250 people registered for the event.

Last year the class of 1964 and students who attended Rimbey schools prior to that date were recognized. The Donnelly and

VanHunbeck pioneer families were highlighted.

This year’s reunion will be held on Sat., June 20 at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre with the doors to open at noon. A light lunch will be served from 12:30 to 2 p.m. and a short program will then begin.

This year the class of

’65 will be featured and the Langmuir family will be recognized as the pioneer family.

Supper will be served at 5:30 p.m. at the community centre followed by dancing with Elmer & Friends.

On Sunday, a pancake breakfast will be held at Pas Ka Poo Park from 7:30 to 11 a.m.
