The First Nation lawyer was the Yukon’s first aboriginal Crown prosecutor. Born and raised in Whitehorse, Atkinson is a member of the Tr’ondek Hwech’in First Nation.

During her candidacy announcement on Tuesday, Atkinson laid out some of her top concerns if she were to represent the Yukon in the House of Commons.

She cited Bill S-6, currently before Parliament, which would amend the Yukon’s environment and socio-economic assessment process. “It (would) bring further uncertainty and harm to Yukon’s economy,� she said, adding it would dismantle a regulation custom-made for the Yukon.

She also cited Bill C-51, the Harper’s government anti-terrorism bill currently awaiting second reading in the Senate. “There are some new necessary provisions, but the threats to free speech and civil liberties are truly ugly,� she said.

Atkinson appeared with some friends, family and NDP members at her side during her announcement.

It’s been an intense start for Atkinson, who only received confirmation she could run for the NDP nomination last Thursday. “I’ve been a member of the NDP for the past month, because it’s been difficult for me in the past to consider being political,� she said.

Atkinson, who has been practising criminal law for the past 15 years, is now a legal aid defence lawyer.

During the last federal election Conservative candidate Ryan Leef won the Yukon riding over Liberal candidate Larry Bagnell by fewer than 200 votes. Both plan to run again in the fall election. “I need to get my face out there so Yukoners know they have a choice,� said Atkinson when asked about the fact some NDP supporters may decide to vote Liberal to avoid vote-splitting.

In 2008, Bagnell won by a little less than 2,000 votes against then-pharmacist Darrell Pasloski.

An NDP candidate was last elected here in 1997, when Louise Hardy

received 28.9 per cent of the vote.

Atkinson says she has the support of Audrey McLaughlin, who served as Yukon’s NDP MP for three terms from 1987 to 1997 and served as the federal NDP’s leader for much of that time. “Historical things have happened in our country recently,� said Atkinson, referring to the surprise election of an NDP government in Alberta last month.

But before Atkinson can face Leef and Bagnell, she will be facing another NDP nominee: Victor Kisoun. The Yukoner announced his candidacy at the end of last year. The federal NDP’s district association hasn’t yet decided when its members will pick a candidate.

The next federal election will be held on October 19, 2015.

“Today, we had a minor incident on the site that involved a small spill (literally one drop) of a liquid odorant known as methyl mercaptan.

This spill resulted in a strong smell of rotten eggs being noticed around the site.�

Gases like propane and natural gas are odourless. The chemical is added so that you can smell a gas leak. “It appears a tiny amount of the mercaptan was accidentally spilled while it was being added to the odorizing system,� Patterson said.

The site was temporarily evacuated

and the fire department was called. “It’s important that you understand this was not an LNG leak, and there were no injuries or environmental impacts as a result of this incident,�

Patterson said.

Yukon Energy’s nearly $43-million project will replace aging diesel backup generators with ones that burn natural gas.

The first truck of LNG arrived at the site last week. Everything is expected to be up and running by the end of June.

The cancelled tender was made public Monday on the government’s website.

It initially looked like Health Minister Mike Nixon would answer questions about the tender’s cancellation, but late yesterday afternoon questions were referred to the department.

Three organizations submitted proposals by the time the tender closed, said Living. But only one of those three was “technically qualified.”

Living said she didn’t have details on how the other two contenders didn’t meet the project’s criteria. Living also said she didn’t know how over budget the qualified organization’s bid was. She refused to name the organization.

The qualified group was actually offering the government more than what it asked for, said Living. That could explain why the budget was higher than expected.

They had expanded the scope of the programming that they were willing to offer and the number of staff, she said.

The new transitional home will be at the former home of the Options of Independence Society on Fourth Avenue. The facility is designed to house between five and eight clients.

When that group, which offers supportive living for people with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, moved into a bigger facility in February of last year, the building went back into government stock.

According to the RCMP, the officer is accused of assaulting Beattie and threatening him while he was in the back of the police car. That report prompted the criminal investigation.

Yukon prosecutors withdrew the charges against Beattie pertaining to Constable Rouleau and Potter on May 22, according to court documents.

Yukon RCMP would not confirm that Cst. Rouleau was the officer under investigation.

“The investigation is largely completed and is being reviewed,”

said Keading, adding they wouldn’t release any names for now.

The Yukon RCMP consulted with the Yukon Department of Justice and the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team and decided Yukon RCMP would handle the investigation and ASIRT would review it, “to ensure that it is thorough and impartial,” the force said.

On top of the investigation, an internal code of conduct investigation has also been directed by Yukon RCMP. The Yukon RCMP said in a release it was “deeply troubled by the allegations against this onduty police officer.”

Teenagers steal car, break elderly man’s hip

The 15-year-old, who was driving at the time of the incident according to RCMP, was scheduled to appear in court yesterday on five charges, including theft of a motor vehicle, failing to remain at the scene of an accident, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

Moments before the 82-yearold man was struck, the teenagers rear-ended another vehicle on Second Ave. and Robert Service Way, causing minimal damages.

On Tuesday Whitehorse RCMP said they were still piecing together what happened and that they needed help from the public and witnesses who were in that area at the time of the incident.

They contacted the vehicle owner, who was not aware that his vehicle had been stolen.

Mountie investigated over assault allegations Yukon RCMP’s major crimes unit is investigating allegations that one of its Mounties assaulted a man.

The officer has been put on administrative leave until the investigation is complete. Meanwhile, Crown prosecutors have withdrawn some charges against the alleged victim, Duke Beattie, a Carcross resident.

On May 15 Carcross RCMP took Duke Beattie into custody after responding to a complaint from the community.

He was charged with five offenses, including breaching his bail conditions, threatening Constable Daniel Rouleau and resisting Rouleau during the execution of his duty.

He was also charged with

Two male teenagers injured an 82-year-old man on Main Street and Second Avenue on Monday morning in a hit-and-run.

The man was treated at the scene of the accident and then transferred to Whitehorse General Hospital where medical staff discovered the man had a broken hip.

He was scheduled to undergo surgery yesterday.

Less than an hour after the accident, Whitehorse RCMP located and arrested the teenagers, aged 13 and 15, who had stolen a 2001 Toyota Tacoma.

Both were charged with possession of stolen property. The 13-year-old, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, was released to his parents.

Whitehorse RCMP looking for missing youth Whitehorse RCMP is asking the public assistance in a missing person case.

On May 25 they received a call about 17-year-old Tristan Chapman, who was last seen leaving Shipyards Park walking towards Boston Pizza on May 22 at 11 p.m.

The police’s efforts to locate him have been unsuccessful so

If that is granted, it could impact the length of time he is on probation after being released.

A long-term offender status means a maximum probation sentence of 10 years. A dangerous offender designation could mean anything from a longer probation period to a lifetime prison sentence.

Earlier this year Nehass was sentenced for crimes he committed while in custody at the Whitehorse jail.

That includes assaulting a corrections officer by spitting on him, attempting to break out of the segregation unit and doing more than $35,000 worth of damage.

During that trial, Nehass asked a territorial court judge to consider whether his treatment in jail violated his rights, including the protection against cruel and unusual punishment.

That application was never finished because a deal was worked out. Nehass said he planned to file a charter application again in Supreme Court. He did that on Friday.

The judge encouraged Nehass to get help from Vaze with the application.

Nehass has been in jail since December 2011. The lawyer told the court he sees two charter applications Nehass could consider making, one based on the length of time it has taken for the trial to happen and another based on the time he has spent in confinement.

Assuming the situation has not changed since his territorial court appearance, Nehass has not been part of the jail’s general population since May 2013.

No date for a sentencing hearing has been set yet.

Teslin residents thirst for swimming pool Jacqueline Ronson News Reporter

T

eslin is a community with a plan.

Last month the Village of Teslin and the Teslin Tlingit Council published their joint community development, which outlines capital and infrastructure projects for the next decade.

At the top of the community’s wish list? A swimming pool.

“That was one of the top priorities as presented by the community – that’s not a priority necessarily that both councils put forward, but the community itself did,” said Wes Wirth, the First Nation’s executive manager.

At a community meeting a year ago, interest in a swimming pool outranked every other item by a landslide.

“The community has said, ‘We’d like a pool.’ So we have to look into it, we can’t just ignore what the community says,” said Wirth.

Ongoing operations and maintenance can be expensive, he said.

“We need to be responsible and make sure that we can actually sustain having a swimming pool here if we’re going to have one. So we need to go do some work on that before we can say, “let’s go build a pool.’”

Some of that work has already been done. The village has compiled research based on community pools around the territory. Eleven out of 16 Yukon communities have swimming pools, according to that report. That includes some communities smaller than Teslin, which has a population of about 450.

Operations and maintenance cost between $35,000 and $317,000 per year at pools run by municipalities in the territory, depending on size, staffing and programming.

Teslin Tlingit Council executive manager Wes Wirth says that the First Nation and the Village of Teslin enjoy a close working relationship.

Teslin’s swimming pool may end up being attached to a new school, which the community hopes will be built in about a decade.

The community expects the pool will cost about half a million dollars.

Another major project on the horizon is planned upgrades and repairs to the Nisutlin Bay Bridge.

The Yukon government was ready to go ahead with that $14.5-million, two-project last year, but the tender was cancelled at the last minute.

The community asserted that more planning and study was required to minimize environmental impacts and maximize economic opportunities for residents.

“We want to be part of the discussion. We need to part of the discussion. It impacts the community greatly,” said Wirth.

The community needs time to train its citizens, he said. Yukon College is currently running an introduc-

tion to the trades program in Teslin.

“We’re trying to encourage citizens to be prepared to participate in these projects.”

The cancelled project meant that it missed the deadline to access the most recent round of the federal Building Canada Fund.

The Yukon government hopes that the next round of federal infrastructure funding will help pay for the project, but for now it’s on hold.

One of the things that makes Teslin special is the close working relationship between the Village of Teslin and the Teslin Tlingit Council administrations, said Wirth.

“Teslin functions on doing things as a community, so First Nations work very closely with the municipality, and we try very hard to work as one community.”

Teslin’s deputy mayor, Gord Curran, said that relationship has grown and strengthened over the past 10 or

“We have our separate spheres of influence and we respect those, but where we can find ways to work together we work through them,” said Curran.

This year alone the village and the First Nation have dozens of projects on the go, including new housing, road repairs and sewer lift station replacement.

“Teslin residents should line up, because we have jobs,” said Wirth.

exemptions for all museums, a special exemption for MacBride only, and the designation of museums as a special class under the Assessment and Taxation Act. But ultimately, exempting museums would result in a loss of approximately $100,000 in revenue to the city, according to city documents, and administration’s final recommendation was that all museums, including the MacBride, be subject to the policy.

Halliday said he was surprised by the recommendation. “We worked productively with the city for five months, so that’s why the vote was a bit of a shocker to us,� he said.

At Monday’s meeting, Curtis said he brought the amendment forward because he had had a change of heart.

Back in November, he commented that the income tax collected from non-profits was important because it goes towards supporting needy organizations. “Lobbying is good and healthy but I’d prefer if the lobby groups were more factual. The vast majority of organizations think this sliding scale is fair,� he said at the time. “If the worst hit is $1,000 this year, then that’s not bad.�

But after speaking to citizens and tourists, Curtis said, he now under-

stands the value and the impact the MacBride has on Whitehorse. “The MacBride Museum is very unique, not only because of its size and location, but it’s titled on its own.

I’d like to bury the hatchet on this one, I’m seeing clearer now.�

Councillors Mike Gladish, Betty Irwin and Jocelyn Curteanu disagreed, arguing the formula was fair and equitable for all museums.

Coun. Irwin said that giving in to one organization would “completely negate the whole process.� “I don’t feel this an undue hardship on the MacBride Museum,� she said. “If we pass this amendment and we give an exemption to this one organization, who is a squeaky wheel, I think we waste an awful lot of time and money developing this grant policy. If we do this now it’s no longer fair and equitable to all the organizations, and we open the door to more organizations coming forward and saying, ‘We’re unique, we deserve special treatment too.’�

The new policy came into effect on Jan. 1.

he owners of Nugget City are raising a stink over the Yukon government’s decision to close the Upper Liard landfill at the end of June.

Scott and Linda Goodwin have run the restaurant, RV park, gas station and service centre near Watson Lake for 21 years.

They say they rely on the Upper Liard landfill to dump their tourist garbage.

Closing it would mean they would have to start hauling the waste to the Watson Lake landfill instead, where there is a tipping fee and strict sorting rules. They say working 18-hour days means they don’t have time for that. “We’re getting a raw deal down here,� said Scott Goodwin. “This af-

fects us more than anybody else.�

The couple says they’ve been fighting to keep the Upper Liard landfill open since 2012, when they first heard rumblings that it would be closed.

As it stands, they can dump their garbage at any time of day, at their convenience, they say.

Letters to the government have gone unanswered, and meetings to discuss the closure of the landfill have been held while the couple is down south during the winter, they add.

In a recent letter sent to Dwayne Muckosky, Yukon’s director of community operations and programs, they suggested the government put a locked gate at the site and give Upper Liard residents a copy of the key, or man the facility part-time.

But they were told that would be too costly.

announced it had finalized its solid waste management agreement with Watson Lake. The Watson Lake landfill is now designated as a regional solid waste facility, meaning the existing transfer station in Upper Liard will be decommissioned over the coming months. “I understand that the cost of garbage and water is astronomical, no matter how you slice the cake,� said Linda Goodwin. “But I’m not about to go through their garbage to tell you what’s in there, I didn’t sign up for that one.�

If the Upper Liard landfill does close, they say, they will resort to a strategy they used for a month back in 2012.

After buying a one-ton dump truck that would allow them to haul more garbage at a time, they discovered it wouldn’t fit inside the landfill. So they

decided to instruct their guests to bring their garbage to a highway rest area about one kilometre down the road, instead.

The mountain of garbage began attracting wildlife and two bears had to be shot, Linda said.

The government eventually revamped the landfill to accommodate the couple’s truck.

Muckosky said the government had been in touch with the couple and would “continue this type of dialogue.�

He explained that some of the waste at the Upper Liard landfill would be moved to the Watson Lake landfill, while other types of waste would be buried at the site.

Ground water wells at the site will be monitored for the next 25 years, he added.

quiet considering the high fire danger we’ve had,” said Tim Mowry, spokesperson of the forestry division of the Alaska Interagency Coordination Center.

Contrary to B.C. and the Yukon, most fire starts in Alaska have been human-caused, said Mowry.

He said that when the Yukon put out a call for reinforcements last week as 10 new fires were starting daily, the state couldn’t reciprocate due to the high fire danger.

Yukon residents should expect “smoky conditions” said Maratos, especially around Dawson City, Carmacks, Watson Lake and possibly Whitehorse.

Officials are also asking paddlers to avoid some of the areas affected by the fire. “We’re asking right now not to paddle the Teslin River in the confluence next to Open Creek because of the active fire,” said Maratos.

There are now 52 fires active across the Yukon. Fire officials are asking residents not to burn and to report any fire activity to 1-888-798-FIRE (3473). A map of active fires is available on the Yukon Wildland Management Branch’s website, at community.gov.yk.ca/ firemanagement.

O

n my long and winding road back to the Yukon, I stopped in the oil patch for 10 years to run bulldozers and participated in somewhere between 25 and 35 hydraulic fracturing jobs in the Duvernay shale field, which encompasses most of central Alberta but also sneaks across the B.C. border in the South Peace country of Tumbler Ridge, Chetwynd, Hudson’s Hope and McBride Lake, amidst the eastern foothills of the Rocky Mountains.

In fact, shale fracking on the B.C. side close to the mountains was hugely successful, and it was common for B.C. wells to produce four times the natural gas of flatland Alberta wells after being fracked and cracked, the theory being that previous tectonic activity caused larger reservoirs of gas and some oil to develop.

The only other shale field in B.C. large enough to be considered major is the Liard/Horn River field in the northeast corner, most of which (80 per cent) lies south of the border except for the northern tip which intrudes into both the N.W.T. and the Yukon.

It is this tiny tip of an insignificant shale field, the most northern on the “major fields” map of North America, that piqued my interest, because I was frankly astonished to arrive back here over a year ago and see anti-fracking bumper stickers, hear about an 8,000 signature “frack off” petition and read bloodcurdling anti-Yukon Party vitriol because they conditionally approved fracking in that tiny southeast corner of the territory.

While I admit the bumper stickers can be humorous – “Get the frack outta here!,” “Go frack Yourself,” etc. – it made me wonder how hydraulic fracturing somehow got lumped in with killing whales, strip mining, clear-cut logging and global warming on the environmental disaster scale.

Ironically, the major motivation for fracking gas wells, besides

profit, is to get the world off its coal addiction because coal deposits 60-70 per cent more carbon into the ozone than natural gas. When shale fracking was first getting started in Pennsylvania in 1998, it was considered the environmentally correct thing to do (if it worked) and many left-leaning environmentalists embraced it as a potential “cure” for global warming because gas burns clean while coal is filthy.

I consider myself a reasonably well-informed environmental sympathizer, perhaps cursed with common sense, and my primary job in the patch was restoring abandoned oil and gas leases to their original pristine state after the oil companies declared them exhausted. Frack jobs were just brief diversions, often one day, from our reclamation work and I never once considered myself some kind of environmental rapist for giving the hard-working frackers a helping hand.

Fears of groundwater contamination baffles me, too. The fracturing is normally being done at such an extreme depth, often over a mile, that polluting shallow aquifers is virtually impossible with cemented drill holes so long as the operators follow regulations. Some don’t, of course, but that is a regulatory problem which can be fixed by massive fines.

In fact, the only potential environmental damage I ever noticed on a frack job was when an employee, probably a new hire, messed up and accidentally spilled some chemical on the ground which caused the supervising consultant to rush out of his trailer with his arms waving. Then it was my job to sweep it up with a small dozer and get it in a truck and off for a ride to the contamination dump.

The fracturing of shale with high-pressure water is a new application of an old practice, some say the most significant advancement in the history of oil and gas production, and is primarily responsible for these recent developments: 1. It has wounded coal, the dirtiest fuel of them all, and has the potential to kill coal entirely sometime in the 21st century if the necessary pipelines get built.

2. It has cut America’s energy imports from OPEC and other nations by 50 per cent in the last decade.

3. The world’s biggest user of energy, industrial America, is on track to actually being energy selfsufficient by 2020 with a surplus for export for the first time in their history, the biggest contributor being the heavily-fracked Bakken shale field of North Dakota, half of which lies above the Canadian border deep beneath southeast Saskatchewan.

That could be the next big Canadian energy play and may make Saskatchewan the new Alberta.

You can also look at it like this if you are anti-war, as I am being a Vietnam veteran: Americans tend to start new wars when they are short of oil and gas. If you need that explained, you must have recently returned from a long holiday on Mars.

The incredible success of hydraulic fracturing in the U.S. has negated the excuse to invade small foreign countries sitting on huge energy fields. Or is it just a coincidence that no more invasions have happened since shale fracking caught on, took off and became wildly successful?

I don’t see how any anti-war environmentalist can be anything but a fracking enthusiast.

Yukoners were treated to MP Ryan Leef ’s latest taxpayerfunded mail-out last week that was dripping with politics. Surely very similar mail-outs went out in Conservative-held ridings across the country.

Such mail-outs fall into one of those grey areas where politicians can hide amidst a certain level of ambiguity to dodge allegations that they are using public funds to further their own political careers.

After all, the success of many government programs depend on the public’s awareness of their existence. And it is reasonable for politicians to keep us apprised of what they have been up to.

But there is a line that is crossed when politicians use taxpayer money for obviously partisan purposes, and the latest offering from our MP falls squarely on the wrong side of that line.

Leef ’s mail-out – entitled “Tax Cuts and Benefits for Families” – is ostensibly informational yet blatant political propaganda. It may not sport a Conservative Party logo, but it might as well have.

The tone of the document is very much, “Look at what our party is doing for you so please

vote for us.”

Leef ’s mail-out uses a blue colour scheme that is conveniently reminiscent of what’s used by the Conservative Party. The words “tax cut” – a favourite party slogan – are highlighted in large lettering on the front page. Rather than referring to the “government,” it makes repeated reference to the “Conservative government.”

It just happens to highlight those policies that the government has made the cornerstone of its re-election campaign – income splitting and the increased Universal Child Care Benefit – and refers to these being a part of the “Conservative plan.”

It even goes so far as to take a swipe at the opposition parties, claiming that “the NDP and Liberals would raise your taxes, take away the… (Universal Child Care Benefit) … and spend billions on bureaucratic programs.”

More subtly it notes that these policies are geared towards “100 per cent of children” and allows a thoroughly flattered “mom and dad” (the so-called “real experts”) to “choose whatever child care works for your families” – a not so veiled attempt at contrasting Conservative policies with the proposals put forth by the opposition parties.

Are these the kind of government programs that needs to be brought to the attention of voters? After all, we taxpayers usually make it a priority to avail ourselves of free money. And a properly completed tax return will lead to a taxpayer receiving most of these benefits anyway, so it is hard to imagine that too many voters miss out on them.

This is not information. It is politics.

The Conservatives are hardly the first to waste public money on political purposes. Voters in ridings with Liberal and NDP MPs no doubt receive slanted mail-outs of their own. This is a practice that has been going on for some time.

But whoever is doing it, the practice of using taxpayer money to promote narrow partisan interests is crass, wasteful, and inappropriate. It should stop.

Unfortunately it will require that politicians to rise above their own self-interest, take the lead, and act in the greater public good.

This fall voters should demand that each candidates pledge to abandon this wasteful practice.

With the advent of fixed dates for elections, it’s become easier for parties and interest groups to figure out the optimal timing and to budget for a pre-writ advertising blitz. Consequently, Liberal MP Rodger Cuzner suggested Monday it’s time to consider whether spending restrictions need to be extended to the pre-writ period.

Of all the ads released Monday, those issued by Working Canadians are the most pointedly partisan. Spokeswoman Catherine Swift said they’re intended primarily to counter radio ads released a few weeks ago by Unifor, the country’s largest private sector union.

Unifor’s ads accuse the Harper government of gutting health-care funding and doing nothing to help the struggling middle class.

But Working Canadians’ ads don’t actually address Unifor’s contentions. Rather, they target Trudeau personally as the privileged son of a former prime minister who “doesn’t understand middle-class families and he never will.�

Swift maintained the ads aren’t “anti-Trudeau,� just “antidumb policy.�

One of the ads asserts that Trudeau has consistently voted against tax breaks for seniors, homeowners, children’s fitness and family caregivers – none of which Trudeau has said he’d scrap, at least one of which he actually voted for and all of which were included in omnibus budget implementation bills containing hundreds of unrelated measures.

Nevertheless, Swift said “the facts are correct, by and large,� in her group’s ads, compared to Unifor’s ads, which she called “dishonest, dishonest, dishonest.�

Shortly after the ads were released, Swift resigned from the board of the C.D. Howe Institute, a think tank that tries to remain scrupulously nonpartisan.

Art project puts pictures in a whole new light Myles Dolphin News Reporter

L

ong before we took photography for granted by snapping selfies and pictures of our meals at whim, people would once gather inside strange shelters and marvel at moving images projected onto a flat surface.

Anyone walking by the SS Klondike on Thursday and Friday evening this week can experience this form of antiquated entertainment, called a camera obscura.

Donald Lawrence, a visual arts professor at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, B.C., will be setting up a tent-like version of the camera and offering workshops on both nights.

Participants will use the images projected onto a large drawing board to sketch their surroundings. Some of the work will be exhibited in the community gallery space at the Yukon Arts Centre.

It’s part of the lead up to the upcoming Midnight Sun Camera Obscura Festival, held in Dawson City on June 17-21.

The camera obscura was initially used in the 15th and 16th centuries by artists to help them draw their subjects more accurately, but it also became popular among scientists, who used them to observe solar phenomena.

Think of a cross between a giant pinhole camera and a periscope. Light shines into a dark chamber at the top of a structure and bounces off a mirror downwards and onto a flat surface.

The camera obscura’s popularity peaked in the late 19th century, when elaborate versions of the device were built to offer 360-degree views, and became used for entertainment purposes at fairs and tourist attractions in areas such as Central Park, San Francisco and England.

Lawrence estimates he’s built about a half-dozen camera obscuras so far. The first was a walk-in camera he set up when he was a graduate student at York University in Toronto, while another featured a hooded structure on top of a kayak.

“My things tend to be more experimental,” he said.

The interest in the camera came from an art class he took during his BFA at the University of Victoria, around 1985.

objects,” he said.

“He was a photographer and he loaned me a view camera, the ones where you put the hood on the back of your head. Around the same time I also became interested in art history from the 17th century and that research led me to finding out about public camera obscuras.”

Some artists are interested in them because of the way they affect the quality of light, he said, while others are more interested in the historical aspect and how it is tied to colonialism.

But there is enough middle ground for people from both backgrounds to come together and enjoy what it has to offer, he added.

The workshops in Whitehorse and festival in Dawson City are tied to a larger, five-year initiative called The Camera Obscura Project.

Lawrence is the group’s principal investigator.

“The aim is to bring together this group of people from diverse backgrounds as a research group, to exchange ideas and understand each other’s practices,” Lawrence said.

together to meet in a seminar format to show one another what they do, and that was also a planning session for what we’re doing this year.”

A future publication will anthologize this year’s findings and give the opportunity to academics to take their ideas a bit further, he said.

Several students from

Thompson Rivers University, as well as one from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, are acting as research assistants during the project.

Camera obscuras will be set up in Dawson City, including one that Lawrence is mounting to the side of the George Black Ferry.

MANNERS DEAR MISS MANNERS: I have a young nephew and niece, ages 3 and 1. When the first child was born, I asked my sister for her children to call me according to the language customs for “aunt” in our heritage language. While we were born and raised in the United States, we grew up referring to our aunts and uncles this way, and I would like to continue the tradi-

tion.

She has refused this request, calling me by a different name in front of her children. At this point, her kids are either not yet speaking, or too young to pronounce anything correctly anyway.

However, I know that her children will come to know me by the name she uses. Not only that, but any future nieces and nephews from other siblings will likely refer to me the same way as their cousins.

I love my niece and nephew, and my siblings, but feel it is disrespectful to not respect my request. Do I have a say in what my nieces and nephews call me?

DEAR MISS MANNERS: A very good friend is getting married shortly and is planning a reception for approximately 75 of the couple’s family and closest friends. The food will be served buffet-style where guests will serve themselves and then sit at tables to eat.

Two of the tables have reserved seating for the “most important” – everyone else is to seat themselves.

We will be seated for approximately one hour.

I have suggested to my friend that she might make her guests more comfortable if she were to plan a seating arrangement, but she is adamantly against it, saying that everyone can sort themselves out.

Do you agree that assigned seating in this case would be a good idea, and if so, am I doing my friend a favor in suggesting it again?

Or should I butt out? Many of the guests will be coming without a partner, if that makes any difference.

DEAR MISS MANNERS: I have enjoyed a good reputation at work throughout my career. Now I am starting to become a bit well-known in my field.

Consequently, I occasionally meet colleagues who are new to me but who, when we are introduced, will say, “Oh, I’ve heard all about you,” in a somewhat gushing tone.

I usually just smile, say, “How nice,” and then ask the person something innocuous about their work or some other pleasantry, but it feels quite awkward to me. Is this an appropriate response?

Carson 10th in tough field at Canadian 10K championships Tom Patrick News Reporter

W

hitehorse’s Lindsay Carson placed 10th out of 6,759 women runners at the Canadian 10-Kilometre Road Race Championships on Saturday in Ottawa.

She was also fourth out of 764 runners in the women 25-29 category.

But what really is a point of pride for Carson is placing fourth out of Canadians in the championship.

“I don’t really go by age divisions, so I was mainly going for the Canadian placing,” said Carson.

“This was my second time racing the Ottawa 10K and both fields – guys and girls – were extremely competitive this year,” she added. “This race goes on every year, but this year it was designated as the national championship. So it was a great opportunity to compete against the best in the world with some Kenyans in the race, and also the best in Canada right now.”

Carson cruised over the finish line with a time of 33 minutes and 57.2 seconds. The 25-year-old came in 3:02 behind the race’s winner, Gladys Cherono of Kenya, and 2:09 behind Canadian champion Lanni Marchant, who placed third.

“So I really got up for the competition and had a good group of girls to race with: a lot of familiar faces, which for me is really important. I race well with girls I know because then I have certain expectations – if I want to beat them, if I want to stay with them.

You try to run your own race, but you also try to rise to the occasion and push the limits.”

Carson, who recently spent a couple weeks training in Kenya leading up to the world crosscountry championships, out-paced Canadian teammate Natasha Labeaud in a sprint to the finish. Carson squeaked in front of Labeaud – and into the top 10 – by just 0.04 seconds.

Carson beat Labeaud by just two seconds at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Guiyang, China this past in March, to finish 59th.

“Going out we had a headwind, so I knew the only way to survive that was to run with a pack of girls.

So I ran with the lead chase-pack – not the leader women … I ran with that group for probably half way, but unfortunately our little chase-pack separated after half.

There’s a little bit of an uphill right at the five-kilometre mark and that’s where I let some of the girls ahead of me go.

“At the finish I caught one of the girls, Natasha Labeaud, and that moved me up in the Canadian standings.”

Carson was less than 10 seconds off of her personal best 10K time, which she set last year in the Vancouver Sun Run, in which she

took second out of 19,377 women runners.

She placed sixth at the 2014 Canadian 10-kilometre Road Race Championships and took second at the 2014 B.C. 10-Kilometre Championship.

“I was hoping to run faster, but I’m still learning the 10K distance,”

said Carson. “Trying to stay focused for over 30-minutes of work is tough. So I’ll take this in stride.

It’s a learning experience. I know I have what it takes in my legs to run with some of the top girls, but I’m still learning with the longer 10K distance.

“I’ll use my strength in the 10K

to help with my five-K, which is what I’m focusing on now with the summer track season.”

Carson also took eighth at the Canadian Cross Country Championships last November, which landed her a spot on the worlds team that competed in China. But now she’s gearing up for track

season. The Ontario native will compete at track meet in Portland, Oregon next month and expects to set qualifying times for the Canadian Track and Field Championships this July in Edmonton.

Last year, following The Masters, some of the world’s best golfers took part in the big cup experiment during an event sponsored by big cup proponent group HackGolf. Sergio Garcia and Justin Rose headlined a field of pros who played a round of nine 15-inch holes at Reynolds Plantation, a swanky golf resort in Georgia.

Garcia penciled a 30 and Rose a 33 – not exactly world record numbers. The reasoning goes: the better the player, the less he or she will benefit from bigger holes. Ace players will hit closer approach shots and sink the follow-up putt in a big hole or small hole. Or they will two-putt no matter where they are on a green.

“So not only has the game changed in equipment, devices like GPS and range-finders – eventually it had to come down to the size of the hole changing,” said Enns.

Yukon teams selected for Canadian Slo-Pitch Championships Tom Patrick News Reporter

A

fter an absence of more than 25 years, Yukon will be represented at the Senior Men’s and Women’s Canadian Slo-Pitch Championships this August.

Following Softball Yukon’s qualifier tournament over the weekend at Whitehorse’s Pepsi Softball Centre, we now know which two teams will represent the territory.

Whitehorse’s Marlins will play in the men’s division and Whitehorse’s Fountain Tire Mudders will play in the women’s.

“We didn’t really expect to be the team going … but we’re excited to go,” said Marlins captain and shortstop Robin Smith.

“Our core has been playing together the last three years and then we picked up a couple other guys who we’re buddies with who were on different teams … All of us are early and mid 20s.”

The Marlins beat out four other teams in the qualifying tourney, topping the P&M Recycling Guns 19-8 in the final on Saturday.

They came up through the bottom of the draw after losing their opening game 20-16 to Dave’s Cleaning on Friday. The Marlins downed the Jay Hawks before beating Dave’s Cleaning 33-22 in the semi to reach the final.

“We just played good. We got hot in the previous game and just carried it over,” said Smith. “Our defence is always solid. We’ve got really fast guys in the outfield, so playing defence is to our advantage. We just got hot at the right time.”

“Tonight there was great play by everybody. We just hit our sticks hard and our defence was right on tight,” said Marlins’ Andrew Schmidt, who played third base in the final. “This year we knew we had a team who could do it.”

The Marlins never trailed in the final, taking a 2-0 lead in their first at-bat before dealing the Guns a three-up-three-down inning in the bottom of the first.

They eventually took a 10-run lead on a grand slam by Smith in the fifth inning, going up 15-5.

The team also knocked four solo shots from Schmidt, Dakota Organ, Mike Wintemute and Brett Roulston.

“We came out real flat. We’re missing some key guys from our roster, but we called up some guys and they played really well,” said

Guns captain and first baseman Mike Tuton. “We just came out flat. There was not a lot of hurraying in the dugout. If you look at (the Marlins’) dugout, they’re all out on the cage firing everybody up, cheering on others. There was none of that in ours.”

The Guns have long been a team to be reckoned with in Yukon softball. The Guns have won the men’s A division of the Whitehorse’s Dustball Invitational SloPitch Tournament multiple times, including five straight between 2009 and 2013. They lost in last year’s final to a mixed JuneauSkagway team.

The Guns also competed at the Slo-Pitch National Championships – a different national championship not sanctioned by Softball Canada – the last two years.

“We talked before the game, no matter what happened, those kids were going to the nationals,” said Tuton. “We probably weren’t going to go, we said that from the beginning.”

Yukon was last represented at the Canadian Slo-Pitch Championships in 1987 for men and 1989 for women, sources said.

This year’s championship will take place Aug. 9-15 in Dorchester, Ont. “I’m very excited. I can’t wait,” said Schmidt. “It’s nice that it’s a hot weekend like this because we The Yukon home of

have to be used to it, playing in Ontario in mid-August.”

The Fountain Tire Mudders earned the spot at nationals with two straight wins over the Nuway Crushers in a best-of-three showdown. Only two women’s teams registered for the qualifying tournament.

“We’re all really excited to represent the Yukon,” said Mudders captain Roni-Sue Steinhagen.

“We know it’s going to be a lot of hard work, so we’re planning a lot of practices and stuff to step up our game.

“One of the things I love about this team is we all play together and it’s definitely a team effort …

It’s not one particular person who stands out.”

The Mudders won 23-13 Friday and 24-4 Saturday. They scored nine runs in the sixth inning in Friday’s game and six runs in the first inning of Saturday’s game.

“Our bats were on last night (Friday),” said Mudders outfielder Shelly Mitchell. “We had one inning that we didn’t have bats and the rest of the time it was hits, hits, hits.”

This season is the Mudders’ third together. They placed third in the women’s A division in the 2013 Dustball tourney and came second last year.

“I’m from Ontario and my family back home, we’re all big in ball,” said shortstop Jamie Taylor.

“My family is proud I get to come down and represent Yukon now.”

A lot more Yukon teams are expected to enter Softball Yukon’s next qualifying tournament at the end of July. That one will select the teams who will compete at the 2016 Canadian Slo-Pitch Championships, which will be held at home in Whitehorse.

“We will be sending teams to this year’s nationals because it’s based on us getting the championship – our teams need to travel, attend other locations as well,” said Arcand. “That was part of our bidding for it. We said we’d send teams.”

The 2016 championships won’t be Softball Yukon’s first time hosting a major event in recent years, nor will it be the last. Whitehorse was home to the 2008 International Softball Federation Junior Men’s World Championship, the 2012 ISF Women’s World Championship and the 2014 ISF Junior Men’s World Softball Championship. The Yukon capital will also host the ISF Men’s World Championship in the summer of 2017.

National Aboriginal Day- Call for Volunteers, from Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre Task description: Opened in 2012, the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre is a non-profit organization dedicated to the collection, documentation, preservation and presentation of the natural and human history of the Kwanlin Dun people. Through engaging, informative and educational programs and exhibits, the Centre proudly reflects and promotes the culture of the Kwanlin Dun as well as hosting a variety of unique services and programs that contribute towards the Yukon experience.

National Aboriginal Day (June 21st Annually) is a day to celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding achievements of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples in Canada.

We will have food vendors, entertainment all day and special activities throughout the event.

The KDCC is seeking volunteers who are interested in taking part in all the National Aboriginal Day festivities on June 21, 2015 as well as set up on June 19 & 20.

Responsibilities: We are looking for Volunteers to do a variety of tasks , including set up and tear down of event spaces, providing assistance with programmed activities, providing information to the public, light cleaning and facility maintenance, providing assistance for the live performance Main Stage and other duties Skills needed: If you wish to be a part of this amazing opportunity, please indicate your experience and background in volunteering and events, areas of interest for volunteering , as well as your availability for June 19, 20 & 21.

Time commitment: Volunteers will be required on June 19 & 20 between 9:00am-5:00pm for set up and organization and then on Sunday, June 21 between the hours of 8:00am9:00pm for National Aboriginal Day activities.
