Sunseekers and waterbugs alike – from the Semiahmoo Peninsula and beyond – flock to White Rock Beach every year.
Plenty of places to cool off There are plenty of places to cool off on a hot summer’s day on the Semiahmoo Peninsula. Whether you prefer the sand between your toes and salt water on your skin, or you’re more of an indoor-pool swimmer, you’re sure to find the perfect spot to relax and enjoy some fun in the water. Here are the most popular swimming spots around White Rock and South Surrey:
Crescent Beach Crescent Beach, situated on the eastern shores of Boundary Bay, is a relaxing, low-key alternative to the hustle and bustle of nearby White Rock Beach in the summer. Whether the tide is out or in, one will find a whole host of activities at their fingertips. It’s a great place for playing on the beach, kite-flying, ice cream, kayaking, picnics, and searching for crabs and is undeniably one of the best beaches in the region. A lifeguard is on duty from July through August to keep an eye on
swimmers in the roped-off area. Another perk for visitors: free parking.
White Rock Beach Thousands of visitors from all over flock to White Rock Beach every summer to jump from the pier, take a dip in the ocean and sunbathe. Named after the large boulder that graces its shoreline, this charming, oceanside community is located along an eight-kilometre stretch of sandy beach. The waterfront is always bustling with activity and excitement, especially around Marine Drive, where the sounds of music and laughter echo from the often-full restaurant patios. At low tide, children can build sandcastles, play frisbee and explore the marine life lurking below the seaweed. Swimmers note: White Rock Beach does not have a lifeguard on duty at any time throughout the year. Make sure you have a credit card or change to pay for parking.

South Surrey Indoor Pool Year-round, the South Surrey Indoor Pool, measuring 37-metres in length, is a popular spot for swimmers of all ages and experience levels. With admission, one has access to six 25-metre lanes, a dive tank and two diving boards. There’s also a children’s pool, a whirlpool and two dry-heat saunas. All swim sessions are fun-filled and interactive. The “Fun Staff” lead activities and games throughout the afternoon and evening public sessions, and are sure to leave you with a big smile on your face. Other features include instructor-led fitness classes and one-on-one assistance with your strokes. Visit www.surrey.ca for admission rates and swim schedules.
Sunnyside Outdoor Pool As soon as the sun begins to really sizzle on the Semiahmoo Peninsula, the Sunnyside Outdoor Pool on 26 i see page 7

The club is proud of its ability to serve the swimming community with programs including synchronized swimming, triathlon, water polo, family and medal swims. Visit www.cbswimclub.ca for more information.
Tong Louie Family YMCA

Located at 14988 57 Ave., the Tong Louie Family YMCA offers a range of swimming lessons for all ages and abilities. The facility includes a toddler pool, 25-metre lanes for swimming lengths as well as a smaller special-use pool.
Crescent Beach Swim Club The Crescent Beach Swimming Club, located at the foot of McBride Avenue, adjacent to Blackie Spit, offers a broad aquatic program with opportunities for all family members at all levels. The pool and signature salt-water tank have been a part of local swimming heritage for many years.
Grandview Aquatic Centre
Kids Water Park Swimming pools and salt water aren’t the only ways to stay cool. For the kiddies, the water park located at South Surrey Athletic Park on 148 Street and 20 Avenue is always a barrel of fun and frolic. The park’s water system operates from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m, from mid-May to Sept. 30, and is always free. Washrooms are on site, as well as a picnic area with shelters.

Revived Sea Festival bigger than ever This year's event – the 63rd – is set for the B.C. Day long weekend in August Following a successful revival of the original name – and an influx of new organizational energy in 2014 – one of the Semiahmoo Peninsula’s oldest traditions, the White Rock Sea Festival, will be back and bigger than ever this summer. The date for the 63rd annual event will be the Aug.1-2 weekend and a highlight will be the 29th annual torchlight parade (Sunday, Aug. 2, 9 p.m.) featuring White Rock’s city float, representatives from other cities throughout B.C., and all manner of marching bands and wild and wacky commercial floats. New organizing body, the White Rock Events Society, promises all of the popular features that crowds have come to expect over the years, including live music, a children’s activity area and fireworks. Known for close to 20 years as the

Spirit of the Sea Festival, the festival has proudly returned to the White Rock Sea Festival brand. Last year’s event celebrated 65 years of the festival, but in actuality it was the 65th anniversary of the concept, introduced to the White Rock Board of Trade in 1949 by
Syd Suddes as a replacement for the waning White Rock May Day celebration. It took three years to bring the concept to fruition in 1952, but it was an almost instant success, resonating with residents. It was that year that one of the most enduring features of the weekend – the ‘Miss White Rock’ contest, now the White Rock Youth Ambassador pageant – was launched, and White Rock’s newly-chosen royalty still make their community debut at the torchlight parade. Some other features, such as the King Neptune contest, launched in 1954, in which contestants were judged on the magnificence of their beards, have fallen by the wayside. But some version of the children’s sandcastle contest has always been part of the fun.

Dip your toes into new water When it opens, the Grandview Aquatic Centre will offer something for everyone While the Semiahmoo Peninsula is well known for its beaches and waterfront recreation spots, a brand new facility set to open this fall will provide a state-of-the-art place for aquatics lovers to enjoy year-round. The Grandview Heights Aquatic Centre, at 24 Avenue and 168 Street, will be home to numerous leisure programs, events and competitions once it opens later this year. The facility includes a number of aquatic and fitness features aimed at offering something for every age and ability. The centre includes a 10-lane, 50-metre Olympic-size competition pool, complete with a series of competition-height diving platforms at one, five, three, 7.5 and 10 metres.

only higher temperature pool, as well as a sauna and steam room. The 500-square-metre leisure pool includes a lazy river, spray features and beach entry for small children, as well as a large, spiralling waterslide. The shallow end of the leisure pool features a movable floor, which can be adjusted in height depending on what that area is being used for. The facility is equipped with spectator seating for up to 900 people, for accommodating largescale swim and diving competitions. It will also house a 10,000 sq.ft. fitness centre on the second floor, overlooking the pool, which will include cardio equipment and a variety of weight-training i see page 21
Set to open in the fall apparatuses. The building itself is something of an architectural marvel, featuring a rippling roofline that conjures images of waves in the ocean. The roof structure is made up of long beams – fabricated with what is known as glulam (glued laminated wood) beams – which makes up the long, dynamic looking appearance of the building. The exterior is made up of floor-toceiling translucent panels which let in plenty of natural light but reflects the rays that are too bright. Plans for the aquatic centre were first announced in 2011, with an estimated cost of the project pegged at $53 million. Construction began in the fall of 2013, and is expected to be completed in October of this year.

“Even if there are long-term vapers, this is not a problem, as long as they quit smoking. The problem is combusted tobacco, not nicotine. At the dosage used by vapers or users of nicotine gums or patches, nicotine is not toxic. Long term vaping is not a public health problem; not any more than long term use of nicotine gums.” -Dr. Jean-François Etter Credentials: University of Geneva Professor of Public Health, well known researcher in tobacco and electronic cigarettes.

Diner Review • Mar 16, 2014 My family and I went for lunch on Sunday and had a delicious and authentic dim sum meal. I’ve been eating dim sum for two decades - the food was fresh and better than the dim sum I had in Hong Kong. We got the egg tarts, durian rice balls, char siu buns, rice rolls with scallop, siu mai, radish cake, and mango pudding. - Sha from Vancouver

Plenty to keep sports fans busy As any local sports fan knows, there’s no shortage of action on the Semiahmoo Peninsula – and 2015 is no exception. No matter your favourite sport or activity, there should be plenty to keep you busy thoughout White Rock, South Surrey and Cloverdale in the coming months. Two of the biggest events of the summer have always been the Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championships and the Tour de White Rock cycling series – both of which are set for July. This year, the Canadian Open – which has been held in South Surrey since the early 1990s, formerly under the Canada Cup moniker – will run from July 3-13. The women’s fastpitch tournament is one of the largest, most prestigious on the planet, and it’s also among the most popular, routinely drawing the top youth and women’s teams from around the world, including numerous countries’ national programs. The 10-day showcase is split into four divisions – international, elite, Futures (under 19) and Showcase (under 16) – and in the past has seen more than 80 teams take part – totaling more than 1,300 players. While the majority of the action takes place at Softball City (2201 148 St.), the tournament is also staged at Sunnyside Park (15455 26 Ave.) and Cloverdale Athletic Park (6330 168 St.). This summer’s Canadian Open will be even bigger than usual, as organizers ramp up efforts in advance of next year’s 2016 Women’s World Fastpitch Championships, which will be held at Softball City and, for one year, will replace the Canadian Open. Surrey won the bid for the world championships back in the fall of 2013, and organizers have been preparing to welcome the world ever since.

The Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championships, held every July in South Surrey and Cloverdale, is one of the most popular events of the year. For more information on the Canadian Open, visit www. canadianopenfastpitch.com
Tour de White Rock Less than one week after the Canadian Open comes to a close, the Tour de White Rock hits the streets – and this year it's a little different. Now in its 36th year, the event – set for July 17-18 – is just a two-day affair, as opposed to three in past years. Gone from the schedule is the hill climb, but the popular criterium in uptown White Rock remains, as does the road race, which will now run Saturday, as opposed to its usual Sunday morning time slot. The criterium will see cyclists pedal around a short, one-kilometre course that includes Johnston Road, Five Corners, White Rock City Hall and White Rock Elementary.

The criterium races are among the most exciting of the weekend, as riders – cycling within mere centimetres of each other – reach speeds up to 70 km/h. The Tour de White Rock’s road race begins at 9 a.m. on the 18th, and features a 130-km men’s race and an 80-km women’s event. Hundreds of riders will take part, pedalling along Marine Drive before traversing a gruelling, hilly course full of long climbs, tight turns and beautiful scenery. For more information on the Tour de White Rock – including a route map, race details and more – go online and visit www. tourdewhiterock.ca

Action from the pools to the rink i from page 38 being played around town. Local baseball and softball diamonds – from the aforementioned Softball City, as well as South Surrey and Cloverdale athletic parks, and myriad of local school diamonds – have been abuzz with activity since earlier this spring. On the softball side, the White Rock Renegades and South Surrey-White Rock Thunder softball programs are in full swing as they aim for provincial – even national – titles. On the baseball diamonds, the White Rock Tritons – now under the guidance of longtime Major League Baseball scout Marty Lehn, who is aboard as general manager – have both their under-16 and under-18 squads out in full force, as they aim for playoff success in the BC Premier Baseball League.

Local fields are full of youth football players – of all ages – during the fall.
Aquatics Local pools are also a hub of activity, as Peninsula-based swim and dive clubs – including the Pacific Sea Wolves, White Rock Divers, White Rock Amateur Swim Association, White Rock Wave and the Crescent Beach Swimming Club – stay busy in the water, competing in meets throughout the Lower Mainland and beyond. Synchronized swimming is also growing in popularity, thanks to clubs like the Surrey-based BC Aquasonics. The South Surrey aquatic community will no doubt get a boost soon, too, when the Grandview Heights Aquatic Centre opens later this year.
Lawnbowling Lawnbowling is also a big draw in White Rock, as two clubs – the White Rock Lawn Bowling Club (1079 Dolphin St.) and the Mann Park Lawn Bowling Club (14560 North Bluff Rd.) – host members and
guests for daily games, tournaments and other events throughout the year. As well, the White Rock Lawn Bowling Club is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year.
Football As the summer ends, fall sports take centre stage, especially on the football field. The White Rock-South Surrey Titans minor football association plays Sundays throughout late summer and fall – the club’s annual Titans Day celebrations, held at South Surrey Athletic Park in September, serve as the unofficial kick off to the gridiron season. The Titans also have a thriving flagfootball program – for all ages – that runs throughout the spring, and wraps up in June with provincial championships. At the high-school level, Earl Marriott and Lord Tweedsmuir secondaries also have thriving football programs, and field teams at a variety of levels.

Hockey At local hockey rinks – South Surrey Arena (2199 148 St.), Centennial Arena (14600 North Bluff Rd.) and Cloverdale Arena (6090 176 St.) – minor-hockey players will lace up their skates from the fall until next spring. Exciting things are happening at Semiahmoo Minor Hockey Association this year, too – club executive members are attempting to revive the long-dormant juvenile program for older teenagers, while the association will also celebrate its 50th anniversary. At South Surrey Arena, the BC Hockey League is also a popular draw, as the Surrey Eagles aim to rebound from a tough season last year, which saw them begin a rebuilding effort under a new coaching staff led by Blaine Neufeld. Like their counterparts at Semiahmoo Minor Hockey, the Eagles, too, will be celebrating a milestone this coming season – their 25th year in the BCHL.

AUTOMOTIVE DEALERSHIP
What is a Podiatrist? A podiatrist is a doctor of podiatric medicine (DPM), also known as a podiatric physician or surgeon. Podiatrists diagnose and treat conditions of the foot, ankle, and related structures of the leg.
Why Dr. Howard Green? For nearly 21 years, podiatrist Dr. Howard Green has been helping people get back on their feet – literally – with his expertise Dr. Howard Green and personalized care. The longtime Peninsula resident has a slew of credentials – including holding the position as the Head of the Department of Podiatry at Vancouver General Hospital and UBC, as well as President of the British Columbia Podiatric Medical Association, to name a few. In 2008, Dr. Green was one of the first Canadian podiatrists to be certified as a Master Surgeon in the HyProCure procedure – a quick, simple in-office procedure that dramatically and permanently corrects flat-foot deformities in children and adults, with a high success rate.
What services does he offer? He is a full-scope podiatrist, meaning he can look after, diagnose and treat all foot-health related issues. He also does more complex procedures, such as surgical correction of foot deformities or abnormalities

Can you explain how a deposit works at an automotive dealership? Be sure you understand the deposit, return and exchange policies of the dealership before you sign any documents. Remember, the term deposit can be used to describe quite a few different things. It is an industry best practice to be sure that the terms of any deposit are clear and in writing. Depending on when it is taken in a transaction, a deposit may be a separate agreement for a variety of services. It could be an agreement for services to: r )PME B WFIJDMF GPS B QFSJPE PG UJNF r -PDBUF B WFIJDMF GSPN BOPUIFS EFBMFS r #SJOH JO B WFIJDMF GSPN UIF NBOVGBDUVSFS BOE PS r "SSBOHF à OBODJOH GPS B WFIJDMF Be sure you know what your deposit is for. If there is a written purchase agreement, the law requires motor dealers to detail the terms and conditions under which a deposit may and may not be refundable. Even when a deposit is stated to be non-refundable, there may be situations when a deposit will be refundable; such as when a dealership cannot deliver on its promise.

Veterinary Care so important for your Pet?
A: Pets need to go to the vet like
we need to go to the Doctor for regular check-ups so they stay in optimal health. Routine preventative veterinary care is crucial for your pet to live a quality, happy life. This starts with proper nutrition, vaccination strategies, disease screening, and dental cleanings. Puppies and kittens are very susceptible to contagious parasites and viruses. Regular veterinary care should start when your pet is a baby and continue through adulthood. Start good nutrition early on with your pet. Young pets, like us, need vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to grow and stay healthy. Early detection of disease can save your pet’s life! Disease can be caught early by wellness examinations performed by your vet. Regular dental cleanings can stop infections in the oral cavity from spreading to the heart and other organ systems in your pet. Keep in mind how pets age only taking your pet to the vet once a year would be like you only seeing the doctor once a decade! Remember to book twice yearly veterinary exams to ensure optimal health for your furry family member!
