B.C. Views: B.C. goes long with LNG bid

by Tom Fletcher Opposition politicians were outraged over the B.C. government’s latest effort to secure its first major liquefied natural gas deal, announced last week.

Premier Christy Clark, Natural Gas Development Minister Rich Coleman and Finance Minister Mike de Jong signed agreements with Pacific Northwest LNG for a long-term gas royalty structure that could run for 30 years.

The government says the deal guarantees minimum royalty revenue for the province, while the investors increase their revenue if the spread between gas prices in North America and Asia increases during the term.

Pacific Northwest is a partnership of some of the biggest investors and gas customers: Malaysian state giant Petronas, its Canadian subsidiary Progress Energy, Chinese state firm Sinopec, Indian Oil Corp. and Japan Petroleum.

These corporate giants will review a project development agreement, and if they approve, Clark will convene the legislature to approve changes that would compensate them if the new LNG income tax increases.

gas regulations on LNG would also trigger compensation. Future changes to general carbon tax or corporate income tax rates would not.

NDP leader John Horgan warned that “too much lolly” is being offered, with no word of job guarantees for B.C. or a deal with First Nations at the proposed site near Prince Rupert.

“My biggest concern is that we’re tying the hands of future governments because a desperate government made commitments that they over-promised on and now they want to get a deal at any cost,” Horgan said.

Green Party MLA Andrew Weaver called it “shocking and irresponsible,” repeating his prediction that the global market is swimming in gas and will never support huge green-field projects across B.C. For the investors, it’s like a mortgage. There are “subjects” to be removed before the deal closes, and this is a proposed $36 billion mortgage for pipelines, LNG processing and shipping facilities.

This isn’t just a political dispute. For example, Progress has drilled about 500 gas wells in northeastern B.C., and Petronas took it over with this development in mind. Without exports, B.C.’s whole gas industry is looking at a bleak future of low prices and demand.

Petronas delayed its investment decision to this year and cited exactly these concerns, certainty on taxation and royalties beyond the election cycle. With that in hand,

their obstacles remain federal environmental approval and a revenue sharing deal with a First Nation to host a terminal.

Pacific Northwest CEO Michael Culbert notes that answers to questions posed by the Lax Kw’alaams First Nation were submitted to federal regulators only days before they started voting on a $1 billion share of LNG proceeds over 40 years.

The vote was a resounding no, despite a redesign that put pipelines on a suspension bridge over the most sensitive salmon habitat. Culbert suggests that given some time to examine environmental mitigation work, that answer may change.

Does aboriginal title offer a veto over projects like this? According to the recent Supreme Court of Canada decision on the Tsilhqot’in case, the short answer is no. Objections could be overridden if governments determine a project is in the interest of the greater public.

Talks have taken place with 19 First Nations affected by pipelines and facilities, and 14 have agreed. While they continue with Lax Kw’alaams and other Tsimshian Nations on the coast, it’s worth recalling that others are not so reluctant.

The Nisga’a Nation has identified four sites as suitable for LNG terminals with a shorter pipeline route to the coast than Prince Rupert.

Time to pledge for Walk a Mile in Her Shoes This year, once again, a group of men wearing red, high-heeled shoes will walk in the Sam Steele Days parade to raise money for the Cranbrook Women’s Resource Centre.

The men—23 of them have signed up so far—are busy collecting pledges as part of Cranbrook’s fourth annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes: The International March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault and Gender Violence.

“This is our main yearly fundraiser,” said Melanie Gould, with the Friends of the Cranbrook Women’s Resource Centre. “We’ve set a big, audacious goal of raising 20 thousand dollars.”

men to walk a mile (a 1.3-mile parade route, actually) wearing the shoes which are devilishly pointy at the toe and harrowingly narrow at the heel tip.

“We special-ordered the shoes,” Gould said.

“We’ve got them in sizes up to 16 for the taller guys.”

Walk a Mile In Her Shoes started in 2001 in California, and has spread to many communities across North America.

Proceeds from every walk must go to a community organization that works to reduce violence against women. The Cranbrook Women’s Resource Centre, under the auspices of Community Connections of Southeast BC, is just such an

So far, East Kootenay Community Credit Union, Mount Baker Secondary (staff and students) and Cranbrook Finning have signed up teams.

Courteous campfires A number of excessively large campfires in the City and the smoke from some of these fires has created an influx of complaints to Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services this spring.

Residents using campfires and other cooking fires need to be aware of a number of things in order not to be a nuisance to your neighbours.

“The first is being aware of the venting index – the ability of the atmosphere to disperse airborne pollutants like smoke,” says Wayne Price, Director of Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services. “The second is that when the weather is warmer neighbours in the immediate vicinity often have windows and

doorways open.

Those who use campfires or other outdoor fire pits are encouraged to monitor the venting index before using a campfire.

A guideline is also in place that limits the size of fire pits to 24 inches in diameter. The intent is to ensure that campfires are controllable and do not pose a threat from either radiant heat or flying embers to surrounding properties or other combustibles.

A copy of a Public Safety Notice, respecting campfires within City limits is available on the City of Cranbrook website under ‘Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services’ .

Canadian Environment Week Strengthening Our Environment Today for Tomorrow Recycling 101 - The Basics

You can use ANY yellow bin in the East Kootenay. Here are some quick tips to remember when recycling: • All plastics MUST be clean and have a number between 1 and 6. That number must be in the triangular recycling symbol. If there is no number, it should go in the garbage if it can’t be reused.

• All plastic grocery/shopping bags can be recycled -- even if they don’t have a number on them. This is the only item that can be recycled if it doesn’t have a number. All other plastics must be numbered • Styrofoam CANNOT be recycled in yellow bins (even though its marked #6), but can go to the MMBC packaging area at the Cranbrook Bottle Depot.

• Tin cans should be well rinsed with labels removed, if possible.

• Cardboard should be flattened to save bin space.

• All paper products can go in the yellow bins (and Fernie & Invermere blue bag program) -- including hard and soft cover books. Foil covered or waxy papers cannot be recycled. Milk cartons can be taken to the MMBC Packaging area at the Cranbrook Bottle Depot for recycling.

What to Do With Paint Paint and aerosol paints can be taken to the Cranbrook Bottle Depot, New or Nearly New (Kimberley), Fernie Bottle Depot, Invermere Bottle Depot and RONA Northstar Hardware & Building Supplies (Invermere).

Containers must be sealed in paint containers and clearly labeled. If paint cans are dried out and there is no liquid left, the cans can go in the garbage.

Wrangler Unlimited is the only four-door convertible currently on the market and its standard Sunrider soft top has a clever sunroof feature, in addition to a full topdown position. Classic Jeep features include its round headlights, a flat fold-down windshield, exposed door hinges and doors that are easy to remove and available in both full or half frame.

An optional Jeep Freedom Top is a three-piece modular hardtop, which fits over a retracted soft top. In addition to providing a higher level of security, it has three removable panels. There are two Targa-like removable roof panels up front and a larger panel over the rear seats.

Wrangler Unlimited originally came with a torquerich 3.8-litre V6 coupled either to a six-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic. It’s not a light vehicle and tips the scales at a robust 1896 kg (4180 lb), so gas consumption is also heavy.

Expect gas consumption at 15.6/11.8 L/100 km (city/ highway - new five-cycle rating) with the automatic transmission. So, to provide its wilderness-wandering customers the extended driving range they expect, Jeep fits an Unlimited with an extra large (85-litre) gas tank.

The base Sport and Sahara trim levels came with a second-generation CommandTrac part-time four-wheeldrive, with a two-speed transfer case and a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio. A TracLok limited-slip rear differential was optional.

Aimed at serious out-door enthusiasts, the Rubicon edition is probably more Jeep than most buyers need. This off-road-ready machine comes with beefier suspension and steering components, protective skid plates, a roll cage and higher ground clearance. It also has an Off-Road Rock-Trac twospeed transfer case, a 4.0:1 low-range gear ratio, electric front- and rear-axle lockers and an electronic sway bar disconnect.

The 2012 Wrangler Unlimited got a new 3.6 litre V6 engine and a 5-speed automatic transmission. Power output and fuel economy, however, are both roughly the same as the 3.8 litre V6 / four-speed automatic combo they replaced. No significant changes were made to Wrangler Unlimited for its 2013 or 2014 model years.

1. An Ounce of Prevention. When it comes to dealing with any type of garden pest, the best approach is Aidentifying the pests and taking long-term action to keep them from becoming a problem. If you create conditions they don’t like, it will not only deal with the pests you see right now, it will also take away their ability to thrive in the future. There are many tools you can use, from using natural predators, planting disease-resistant varieties, trapping or fencing to chemical control with the targeted use of pesticides.

Our fancy name for it is Integrated Pest Management Strategy, ask us about it.

2. Sucking the Life out of Your Plants. Aphids are common garden bugs. They are tiny creatures with soft, small bodies that suck sap from leaves and distort them. Ladybugs love to eat aphids. They can consume about 5,000 aphids in their lifetime, so they can be an effective aphid control if you can keep them on the plants.

3. The Itsy Bitsy Spider. While they sometimes evoke feelings ranging from disgust to fear, spiders can be one of your most effective ally in the war against pests, willing to eat almost any insect they can catch.

The key to using garden spiders as predators is to leave them alone. Most garden spiders set up webs in corners or obscure areas of the garden. By leaving the web alone you are allowing the spider to do its job, helping your plants out in turn.

4. An Imposter that Helps You Grow. They are out there in nature and what is so amazing about mason or orchard bees is that they are even better at pollinating than regular honeybees as they are smaller and can go deeper into the blossom. Orchard bees usually hatch out at about the same time that most fruit trees are in flower. All we have to do to attract them is build or buy a simple bee house.

5. A Very Hungry Caterpillar. We’ve probably all seen them, small green caterpillars with black heads - leaf rollers, wrapped in the leaves of our trees, especially cotoneaster, chokecherry, apple and crabapple trees.

BTK is a naturally occurring bacterium that is highly effective at killing these pests, but is completely nontoxic to humans, pets and birds.

6. What’s Eating my Lawn? If your lawn is not looking its best, there are several potential reasons. Your grass might be lacking water, have dog urine or fertilizer spills or there might be insects feeding on your lawn. If it is pests or diseases attacking your lawn, damage will occur at random. If symptoms follow mowing or spray patterns they most likely are not caused by disease.

7. Lawn Heroes Come in Small Packages. Is your lawn developing brown patches where the dead grass is easy to pull out? Are there little moths flying around when you are mowing the lawn? Then you may have a sod webworm attacking your lawn. Help is on the way in the form of beneficial nematodes.

These microscopic ‘good-guy’ predators attack and destroy sod webworms while being completely harmless to humans, pets and birds.

8. A Loyal Companion. There are many plants that can be great allies in the war against unwanted pests.

Marigolds are great companion plants, they can enhance the growth of several vegetables and their roots produce a chemical that acts as a natural pesticide.

A marigold’s scent will deter insects and even deer are known to have a distaste for this fragrant flower.

Another pretty and powerful plant is alyssum with its tiny flowers attracting numerous predatory wasps.

Planted around your roses and fruit trees, garlic can help repel aphids.

9. Make it Unappetizing. Your choice of plants can be important as well, especially when it comes to the biggest garden pest - if you go by size - deer. Besides the marigold, there are numerous bulbs, flowers, herbs and even shrubs and trees that hooved nibblers find unappetizing. We have a list of deer-resistant plants, but it is important to remember that deer-resistant means the chances a plant will be eaten are reduced, a hungry deer will nibble on almost anything.

10. Gated Community! Fencing is the only way to keep deer completely out of yard and garden. Especially if deer have already sampled your plants and made your garden a regular stop on their feeding tour, your fence has to be high enough to keep the animals from jumping it as well as secured tightly, with no openings to wiggle their way back in.

The homesteaders had energy efficient landscaping all figured out, but the great suburban wave and tract housing did away with all that precious knowledge. What the old timers knew is that tree windbreaks keep the north wind off the walls of the house and sun off them in the summer. That made for cheap air-conditioning and less firewood to be gulped up by the woodstove. But as energywise homeowners are learning today, the low-tech approach can really pay off.

Two energy-efficient landscaping tips • Make shade.

Shading and evapotranspiration from trees can lower the temperature surrounding a house by as much as 6°F. And a well-shaded house has 15-50 percent lower air-conditioning costs. To make shade fast, install trellis and climbing vines on or near walls that receive full sun most of the day. For the long term, plant trees in a border around the house. Evergreen trees provide year-long coverage, while deciduous trees offer shade in summer but let sun-

light through in winter.

• Make windbreaks.

A recent study showed that well-placed windbreaks could save heating and cooling costs

by up to 40 percent.

That’s because planting trees around your house in a strategic pattern reduces the wind chill during the cold season. For the distance between the windbreak and the house, it is recommended to leave a space that is two- to five times the height of the mature trees in the windbreak.

Trees planted north and northwest of your home provide the best winter coverage.

Jobs Minister Shirley Bond announced the new requirement Tuesday, and it takes effect July 1. Construction firms bidding on major projects such as schools, hospitals, roads or bridges will have to include their plans to hire apprentices.

Construction unions have pushed for the change, arguing that a lack of apprentices on public jobs is an obvious gap in the government’s skills training plan. B.C. Building Trades executive director Tom Sigurdson said he is pleased with the agreement, and will give it a year to work before deciding if it goes far enough.

Bond said the coming year could see as many as 15 major projects that would qualify. She agreed with Sigurdson that many apprentices don’t complete their training because they can’t find a job placement between stints in trade school.

Bond said subcontracts worth $500,000 or more, with a focus on one of the 57 Red Seal trades, will also require an apprenticeship component.

“By having a policy like this, government is setting a standard but is not being prescriptive,” he said.

NDP jobs critic Shane Simpson said his party has called for apprentice opportunities on publicly funded projects for years, but the govern-

ment needs to go further.

“In the public service, including municipalities, schools, universities, health care, there are only 300 apprentices in the whole province, and about half of them are with BC Hydro,” Simpson said.

B.C. Federation of Labour president Irene Lanzinger said “aspirational goals are not enough,” and the province should require one of four employees on major projects be apprentices.

College of the Rockies to provide retraining for Canfor workers

College of the Rockies is providing retraining opportunities for employees of the Canfor Canal Flats Mill who have lost their jobs due to a downturn in the timber market.

Canfor’s Canal Flats Mill announced on February 5, 2015 that half of their workforce would be let go due to a lack of economically available timber. The layoffs impacted employees in both production and maintenance departments at the Canal Flats site. Many of the jobs lost were highpaying, long-term jobs and their elimination creates a big impact on the region.

College of the Rockies is an active participant in the Canal Flats Worker Transition Team led by the Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training. Other Team members include representatives from the Ministry of Advanced Education, WorkBC, Canfor’s Human Resources department and Union Transitions

Team, and the Village of Canal Flats. The retraining is made possible, in part, by a onetime grant of $150,000 from the Ministry of Advanced Education.

“Industry slowdowns can put strain on a community, and we are committed to helping the people of Canal Flats during this transition,” said Minister of Energy and Mines and MLA for Kootenay East Bill Bennett.

“Training provided through College of the Rockies will provide a strong foundation to build new careers. We are helping all British Columbians find their fit in our diverse, strong and growing economy.”

The College undertook a survey of the impacted workers and found that fifty-four percent of the respondents were interested in a Haul Truck Operator/Heavy Equipment hybrid program. In response to this interest, the College will be delivering two six-week programs that include the full Haul Truck Operator program certification as well as additional weeks of introductory simulation and theory instruction for dozers, graders and excavators. The first course will start July 27 and run until September 5 with the second taking place from November 2 to December 11.

“We are really excited for the opportunity to pilot the Heavy Equipment modules in our simulators and to build upon our already successful Haul Truck Operator simulator training,” adds Bradish.

4-H Show & Sale the diversity of agriculture in our province. In July we have 3 members going to a program called Youth Action. This is a program that helps develop leadership, self esteem and communication skills as well as long lasting friendships.

On May 2nd we held

We have had a busy year so far. We started out with our annual camp at Rock Lake in September that was a blast. We held registration for our local three clubs- South Country Craft and Critters, Cranbrook Multi Club and the Wasa Club in October. Our district has 59 members this year in a range of projects and 18 volunteer leaders. These projects include Beef, Sheep, Swine, Horse, Poultry, Small Engine, Outdoor

Living, Foods, Crafts, Sewing, Woolcraft and Cloverbuds. A common myth is that you need to have an animal to be in 4-H but as you can see there are many other projects available besides an animal project.

We had our Beef weigh in November and weighed in 20 steers. In February we weighed in 14 sheep and 11 swine. Later in February we held our club public speaking competitions and the top 2 ju-

nior and senior members went on to our District competition on February 22 at the Jaffray United Church.

The winners from that competition were Juniors 1st Olivia Murdoch, 2nd Nellie Baker and 3rd Taylor Tracey, the Seniors 1st Jordan Thielen, 2nd Taylor Holt and 3rd Colby Holt.

The following weekend we held our Regional Public Speaking event at the College of the Rockies and the winners were Juniors-1st

Jessa Adams, 2nd Olivia Murdoch and 3rd Rasmus Knudsen and Seniors- 1st Colby Holt, 2nd Olivia Hanson and 3rd Jordan Thielen.

The top senior will go on to a provincial competition in Vernon on July 2-4.

In April and May we will be having members from our area travelling to Ottawa and another doing Agri Career Quest where they members travel throughout the province to experience

our Regional Judging Rally at Fort Steele. Each member was expected to judge 5 project classes and the senior members are required to give orals in their enrolled projects.

This is a competition that is held with the Creston District. The winners of the Regional

and District aggregate for Juniors were 1st Taylor Tracey, 2nd Emma Pighin 3rd Megan Stewart for Seniors 1st Kayla Sarabun, 2nd Taylor Holt, 3rd Gabby Bake r & Mackenzie Hawke The clothing members model their garments and the crafts members show their items that they have made this year.

This years winners were Dress Revue 1st Sydney Fahselt, 2nd Taylor Tracey, 3rd Cassie Fahselt, Craft Displays 1st Sydney Fahselt, 2nd Cassie Fahselt &Taylor Tracey.

There is also educational displays made by members and this year we had 11 entries. Cassie Adams won for the Cloverbuds, Junior winners 1st Megan Stewart, 2nd Rasmus Knudsen, 3rd Madison Adams for the Seniors 1st Stephanie Alexander, 2nd Tessa Alexander, 3rd Mackenzie Hawke & Olivia Hanson.

Overall educational displays were 1st Stephanie Alexander 2nd Tessa Alexander and Megan Stewart, 3rd Mackenzie Hawke&Olivia Hansen.

Members are now all preparing for our Show and Sale on June 7 at the Wycliffe Exhibition Grounds. Members are all busy teaching their animals to lead and how to stand for showing, grooming and washing them. We will have for sale 18 market steers, 10 lambs and 11 pigs. Come see what the members have achieved this year.

Everyone is welcome to attend. Show starts at 10 am and the sale will be at 4 pm. Thank you to our many volunteers, sponsors and our 4-H families and friends.

Growing the best tomatoes ever!

Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow in the garden. This is mainly because they are delicious and can be used for such a wide variety of things from fresh off the vine to a delicious pasta sauce and everything in between.

Tomatoes that you grow yourself taste much better than the ones that you buy at the grocery store.

They don’t lose their freshness through transportation time.

Now more than ever before the possibilities for growing tomatoes are truly

endless.

Whether you want to grow your tomato plants in a standard garden bed, a container, or even a hanging basket you can do so!

The key is to grow the appropriate tomato for the right location.

Everyone is familiar with the regular tomato called the Beefsteak. This variety provides the large tomatos that everyone is used to.

Around here, this variety can take a long time to mature so if this is your choice, ensure you start them early inside. A

great choice for our area is the Early Girl or Manitoba Tomato. While these varieties are not quite as large as the Beefsteak, they are still a good size and mature about 25-30 days earlier. Sometimes, that is a benefit in our climate. If cherry tomatoes is what you’re looking for, again there are several options. The one most familiar is the Sweet 100, but another growing favorite is the Tommachio. Tommachio tomatoes grow as tall or taller than Sweet 100’s but contain

five times the sugar as a Sweet 100 and are excellent dried in the oven. Now, Tumbler tomatoes are truly a wonder to grow. As the name suggests they tumble and are excellent in baskets and containers. They come in red, yellow and tiger and if you grow them once, you will surely grow them again. They literally produce hundreds of cherry tomatoes throughout the year.

One variety that we tried this year were Orange Wellingtons and Lemon Boy. As the name suggests

one is orange and one is yellow. These varieties are favored by people enjoy a low acid tomatoes.

As well, a variety called Sweet Seedless was tried this year. It’s the first larger variety tomato that contains very little seeds, thus enabling the plant to put its sugars into the fruit. Another mid to large variety is the Healthkick tomato. It’s fruit resembles the texture of the regular Roma tomato so commonly used for sauce, except Healthkick tomatoes contain 25

times the lycopene, which is great for heart health.

Just remember, that whatever kind of tomato you grow, ensure good soil, with ample drainage and use tomato specific food. This is important because proper tomato fertilizer contains micro nutrients and calcium, to ensure good ,juicy fruit with excellent flavor and no disease issues.

And tomatoes like it hot, so plant them in a bright sunny location.

Northstar GM hosts Heart & Stroke’s Big Bike and fund raised $8057!

The Heart&Stroke Big Bike is one of the primary community fundraising events for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. This fun-filled event earned its name from the 30-seat bicycle teams of energetic riders who pedal through 200 communities in nine provinces coast to coast – raising awareness and funds along the way.

All of the money raised through Big Bike will go to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, where they’ll use it to develop life-saving treatments that bring hope to heart disease and stroke patients.

The host team from Northstar GM and a few choice media personalities raised $2172.

The Royal LePage Roadster bringing it home with $785.

Key City Zumba and Scotia Bank with a total of $625.

Walmart Wingnuts and the City of Cranbrook combining for a total of $2045.

Neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow....well okay rain....did not wipe the smiles off these guys!

Cranbrook Curves was top team again this year, raising $2430. Curves has raised close to $20,000 in the past six years!

CAMPBELL, Marilyn Anne 1942 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 2015 In the late afternoon of Wednesday, May 20, 2015, Marilyn Anne Campbell (nee Milne) passed away at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital at the age of 72 years. Marilyn was born in Cranbrook on December 19, 1942.

Growing up in Chilliwack, BC Mom always enjoyed bowling and later switched to curling when she returned to the Kootenays in the early years of her marriage. In her later years, she took up golf and spent many enjoyable rounds of golf with her friends. Mom was always a very sociable person and would do anything for anyone. She loved her children and her grandchildren deeply and enjoyed any time she could spend with them. Her one most beloved companion was her dog, Jack. She will be sorely missed by all who were privileged to know her.

Marilyn leaves to mourn her passing her two children; one son Scott (Dianne) and her daughter Carmen (Joe) as well as five grandchildren; Matthew Campbell, Dustin Campbell, Amanda Gnucci, Tayler Gnucci and Meghan Campbell.

Marilyn also leaves one great grandson Lukas Campbell, one sister, Susan (Sam) Gopal and her friend and former spouse, Larry Campbell.

A Celebration of Life for Marilyn will be held at a later date. Condolences may be left for the family at www.markmemorial.com.

OBITUARY Anne Goodman 1917 - 2015 Anneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wishes came true on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at the F.W. Green Memorial Home, passing at the age of 98. We will all miss her smile.

Anne is survived by her daughter Pat and her sons Fred, Ted, Gordon and their families, 7 grandkids and 10 great grandkids, her sister Lillian, many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents William & Mary Wagner, her brother John, sisterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Catherine and Effie, husband Lloyd, grandson Darcy Jones and special friend Steve Shypitka Sr. Anne was Past Matron of the Order of Eastern Star, a member for over 50 years; a member of The Railway Pensioners and the Cranbrook Senior Citizenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Branch 11.

For more than 30 years Anne knit toques for the Newborns at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital.

There will be no service by Anneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s request. Her interment will follow at a later date in Westlawn Cemetery in Cranbrook, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Anneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s name to the Cranbrook-Kimberley Hospice Society, 20 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 23rd Avenue South, Cranbrook, BC, V1C 5V1.

The basic ingredients aren’t so basic even in the base model! – Standard equipment includes cloth seats, split-folding rear bench, push-button start, rear view camera and Mazda Connect infotainment system.

The more deluxe models add nicer materials, offering premium safety and audio technology.

The Front Wheel Drive version could be a good urban choice but I think Canadians will opt for the AWD CX-3. The fuel economy numbers are not dramatically different between the two options – 7.6 L/100km (FWD) 8.1 L/100km (AWD), combined city/highway.

The CX-3 should arrive in local dealerships any day now. Prices have just been released.

The base GX FWD starts at $20,695, the AWD version adds two grand to the sticker price, and that is also the base price for the GS. The GT starts at a hefty $28,995 and rises to $30,495. Take a long look at the GS versions.
