Town launches new tourismbased website

A new tourism-based website — visitsylvanlake. ca — has been launched by the Town of Sylvan Lake in a bid to provide area visitors with easy access to local information.

The Town partnered

with Tourism Red Deer for the website’s content development and online infrastructure, with the hopes of seeing it used as a starting point for local tourismbased initiatives, development and activity.

A Tourism Strategic Plan developed by the Town in 2013 outlined the need for such a website.

The importance of the tourism industry in Sylvan Lake became clear in 2014

after an assessment indicated a dollar-figure impact of nearly $75 million. The same study found that more than 760,000 people visited Sylvan Lake in July and August of that year.

Town economic development officer Vicki Kurz earlier this week noted the new website is “still a work in progress, with feature stories and events yet to be added.”

Invasive mussels found on Sylvan Lake-bound boat STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

A close call along the shores of Sylvan Lake saw a mussel-infested boat barred from entering the water over the May long weekend.

The boat was intercepted during a mandatory inspection at the Sunbreaker Cove boat launch, just as the trained inspectors manning the site were getting ready to end their shift.

“They determined through the protocols that we train them in that the boat was high risk, and so they did a high risk inspection — a very detailed inspection — and they discovered mussels on the watercraft,” said Cindy Sawchuk, a strategic advisor with Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development.

The incident proved both the effectiveness of the province’s mandatory boat inspections and the reality of the threat posed by invasive species, Sawchuk added. Invasive species such as zebra and quagga mussels have no known control measure, and their presence

can cause irreparable harm to aquatic systems and vital underwater infrastructure.

For that reason, prevention is key.

“Clean, drain, dry — that’s the message that we want to get across,” said Sawchuk. “ We can inspect boats, but it’s really up to the boaters, because if they start to clean, drain and dry their boat every time they leave a water body, and boaters in Alberta start to change their behaviour, we’re effectively eliminating the risk of transporting any of these species.”

The mussels found on the Sylvan Lakebound boat were believed to have originated in Ontario, where the boat was purchased from. The boat’s owner, Sawchuk said, was “very co-operative and extremely compliant.”

“His exact words to me were, ‘I don’t want to be responsible for spreading the plague into Alberta waters,’ and so they were quite mortified,” said Sawchuk. “If mussels do get introduced ... it would be very bad.”

The province last week said the boat would be decontaminated free of charge by specially trained transport officers.

It is probably difficult for people who have not lived in Alberta to understand the significance of our recent election of an NDP government: After 44 years of oneparty-state politics, we have proved to ourselves that political change is possible by making that change.

Post-election polls show that Albertans are largely satisfied with the change. A substantial portion — many of us not card-carrying New Democrats — are ecstatic about it. As a writer in Macleans put it, Albertans “are celebrating a passing from sickness into health, a seizure of freedom for Alberta.”

Albertans resolved, as an article in the Calgary Sun said, to “throw the bums out,” and finally we did.

The result is nothing short of intoxicating. But now that the PCs are deposed, what next?

Two big picture items scream out for Albertans’ attention. On the substantive policy side, we need to develop an across-the-board sustainability agenda. Alberta’s oil sands, for example, constitute Canada’s fastest growing source of GHG emissions and an ecosystem- and community-destroying phenomenon of gargantuan proportions.

But dealing with the oil sands is only the beginning.

Other examples abound. For example, Alberta has the

largest and fastest growing gap between rich and poor in Canada. This undermines our social sustainability and our cities have expanded to accommodate rapid population growth in a profoundly unsustainable way. As Naheed Nenshi, mayor of Calgary, has often observed, we have built cities we can’t afford to operate and maintain.

On the democratic process side, we need to strengthen our democracy while we can by enacting election finance reform and by adopting a fairer, more representative voting system. There is no doubt, as National Post columnist Andrew Coyne and others such as Fair Vote Canada constantly remind us, our voting system is shockingly unrepresentative.

The results of the recent Alberta election illustrate the problem: the New Democrats got 40 per cent of the popular vote but won 62 per cent of the seats. The political preferences of many Albertans are not reflected in the make-up of the new Legislature. And this is a typical result of our electoral system: the PCs fierce dominance of Alberta’s politics for so long was facilitated and exaggerated by our unfair electoral system. We need to adopt proportional representation, a system where the fraction of the vote received is fairly — proportionately — reflected in the allocation of seats among the contesting parties.

But to address our enormous sustainability chal-

lenges and electoral reform, we have to ensure our democracy is never again dominated by big money. In Alberta, that means money from the fossil fuel industry (oil, gas and coal).

Contributions to parties and candidates must be limited to individuals; corporations and other organizations, unions included, must be banned from making political contributions. Appropriate limits, much lower than the current ones, must also be enacted.

This part of the Alberta reform agenda is actually pretty straight-forward and there are good examples in

Canada as to how these changes can be made in law and policy. Further, election finance reform was an NDP election promise. Albertans have to insist that this reform be enacted soon so that we don’t miss this opportunity while a party that is not in bed with industry holds power.

After 44 years of PC power, it is good that another party has a decisive majority for now. Albertans need time to establish some kind of balance after decades of PC dominance and the rot that set in after years of uninterrupted power. But we need to get to a better, more

representative, political system as soon as possible and that can only come through adoption of proportional representation.

It’s a truly wonderful time to be a politically engaged Albertan. There’s a hopefulness, one Albertans haven’t experienced for decades. But huge issues have been long ignored by a series of lazy, entitled and business-subservient PC governments.

The work to be done is immense, but it’s also exciting. Let’s get on with it.

Sylvan Lake artists want castle preserved STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

A pair of Sylvan Lake artists have asked for the Town’s help in preserving a castle in Sylvan Lake that’s said to have been built more than 100 years ago.

Mary Grace Toth and Marian Jacoba Shilka, addressing Town Council as a delegation on Monday night, said they’ve become concerned with the deteriorating state of the “Stone Castle” on 50A Avenue. And while they’ve had no luck contacting the property’s owner, rumblings of a potential sale have made them fear that the castle could soon be lost forever.

“We see this beautiful castle that’s been vacant for 10 years deteriorating day by day,” said Toth. “It’s in disrepair — windows and doors are boarded up, there are signs of vandalism, boards are broken and doors are damaged.”

The two said they’ve been “inspired by visions of what the castle could become,” and asked Town Council to consider enacting a bylaw that would protect and preserve the town’s oldest buildings, such as the castle and the “Stone House” on 46 Street. “(The castle) could be a tourist attraction for downtown,” said Toth. “A museum, a gift shop, a tourist information centre — it could be many things that bring people to our town and that remind them of our history.

“We need your assistance in saving our castle for it to become a community resource, because it’s such a significant contribution to our history. It’s a very enchanting place.”

The stones that make up the castle, believed to have been built around 1905, were said to have been gathered from the shores of the lake.

Toth said two attempts to claim the castle as a historical site have been made in the past. Neither, she said, was followed through.

Town resident urges action against criminal activity STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Recent ongoing criminal activity has prompted one Sylvan Lake resident to urge Town Council to consider ways of teaming up with residents to fight crime locally.

Jordan Sinclair, addressing Town Council during the open microphone segment of Monday night’s regular meeting, said he had been awoken the previous night

by the sound of voices of people conspiring to access both his and his neighbour’s properties.

With such activity not uncommon in the area, he said, now is the time for the Town to take action.

“The town is rife with this problem,” he said. “Do something to get something started to make sure our residences and property are safe.”

He suggested adding more policing or

establishing a citizens patrol to help mitigate property crimes.

The latter, he felt, would need the Town’s weight behind it in order to be effective.

“They need guidance training, and I think that’s a role that the Town has to play,” he said. “It’s at the point I think where people in certain areas of town aren’t feeling safe in their homes, and property is not safe in homes, sheds and garages.

“It’s time we had some ways to stop

that.”

Mayor Sean McIntyre responded to Sinclair’s concerns via social media earlier in the day, noting that a regional RCMP property crimes task force has proven effective in fighting property crime in the area recently.

McIntyre added he was hoping to set up a meeting with Sylvan Lake RCMP Staff Sgt. Gary Rhodes in the near future to discuss the issue further.

Town council approves increased debt financing for NexSource Centre STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Sylvan Lake Town Council on Monday voted to increase NexSource Centre debt financing to $16 million from $13 million, following the approval of a nearly-$3-million project budget increase in late April.

The budget increase arrived as the result of a value engineering exercise carried out earlier this year. Council chose the debt financing increase out of three financing options presented by staff on Monday to make up for the additional costs.

Others options suggested reducing spending in other areas — potentially affecting projects and upgrades on Lakeshore Drive and Centennial Street — and increasing sponsorship and grant funding by up to $1 million.

Councillors agreed that

requesting another $1 million out of the project’s fundraising committee was a big ask.

“The volunteers that run that campaign signed on (to raise) $2 million,” said Mayor Sean McIntyre. “It’s not fair for us to ask them to raise more.”

McIntyre suggested other ways of raising money for such initiatives in the future, including a home lottery previously proposed by Coun.

Dale Plante.

“Coun. Plante has done some background work on a home lottery and its abilities to contribute to the NexSource Centre and other programs, and I think that not only is it an option, it’s something like that we ought to consider,” he said. “We need community champions to make it happen, but I think it’s something we ought to discuss.”

The total budget for the NexSource Centre now sits at $33,550,000.

Chinook’s Edge School Division recently completed a two-year viability study of the school in light of stagnant enrolment — which the division says decreased slightly further over the course of the study.

With 30 students currently enrolled, school staff and parents have been told numbers must now go up before the start of the new school year in September, at which point the school board will make a decision on the school’s future.

“The bottom line is we need our numbers up,” said Kelly Mykyte, vice president of the school’s parent council. “If we have our numbers increased by 15 kids, (the board) will definitely take notice.”

To that end, Mykyte and other parents have begun extolling the school’s virtues to parents in Sylvan Lake and Eckville, informing them that they too can send their children to school in Benalto.

“When you come to Benalto, you see this is how school should be,” she said.

“The level of education is good, the teachers are so involved with the students, and all of the kids play together — all ages — where you don’t really see that in the bigger schools.

“I really truly think that when people move to Sylvan, they don’t even consider Benalto, but it is an option out there.”

Chinook’s Edge superintendent Kurt Sacher said division staff will continue to monitor the school’s enrolment situation closely between now and September.

“No decisions have been made as far as what the board will be doing next year, but it certainly is on our radar, and in the meantime, we’re trying to support some really devoted parents that are trying everything to bump the numbers up for their school,” he said. “We’ve been thoroughly impressed with that school council and what they’ve attempted to do to try and secure a higher level of student enrolment over the long haul.”

If numbers don’t increase, the fate of the school will “depend on what the board would like to do,” he added.

“We’ve certainly mentioned to them that we’re concerned about the enrolment ... and I as a superintendent have a responsibility to make the board aware of those numbers in September,” he said. “We found that there’s a really positive learning environment for students there with the teachers that are in place and the caring staff that are there, and it’s just the goal of the school council and our goal to ensure that we’re able to continue to provide that level of service over the long haul.”

Meanwhile, Mykyte assures she’s ready to do whatever it takes to ensure the school’s long-term future.

“I’m very passionate about the school and the community, because if the school fails, the community starts to suffer,” she said.

“Now is the time where people start thinking about schools for next year, and it gives parents time to make an informed decision.”

The beginning of June marks a special time for all Sylvan Lake residents, who between June 1 and 7 are being invited to come together to celebrate Seniors Week.

Daily activities and entertainment for seniors are planned throughout the entire week — all as a way of saying thank you to some of the community’s most valuable citizens, according to Maryan Weenink of the Sylvan Lake Seniors Association.

“Seniors are awesome, and they are big contributors to our community,” Weenink said. “They are the grassroots of our community. They've given their blood, sweat and tears for us.”

Weenink added that many senior citizens are active community members who spend time volunteering and giving back to the community. Though Seniors Week concludes June 7, seniors are appreciated very much yearround, she assured.

“They help families out and they are a big part of the community that we can't overlook,” she said.

“It's important to make sure the seniors know that they are appreciated and that they are an integral part of our community.”

New lakeside development designed to minimize impact on environment A new lakeside development has employed what it calls “Conservation by Design” to minimize impact on the environment.

The Slopes of Sylvan Lake is a 49-acre cluster-style development located near the Summer Village of

Birchcliff that has retained 25 acres of undisturbed natural area in what its developers call “the future of development in the watershed.”

“We believe we have achieved the perfect balance between managing the steady

population growth while ensuring the long-term health and sustainability of the lake,” said Chris Artibello, president of Belterra Land C ompany.

“Our Conservation by Design techniques promote the creation, retention and manage-

ment of our 49 acres, and they ultimately help us achieve a smaller development footprint.”

The development is tied into the Regional Wastewater Line lift station, adding further to its environmental appeal. It’s that same appeal

that earned the development a voice of approval from Lacombe County, within which the development is situated.

“Our goal is to provide quality communities and to protect the lake at the same time,” said Lacombe County

commissioner Terry Hager.

“The Slopes of Sylvan Lake does both.”

The Slopes’ first stage of construction is now complete, with a number of villas and homesites available. An open house at one of the villas is slated for May 30.

Organizers of the 2015 Best Body Fitness Sprint Triathlon on Sunday are calling the event a success, despite having to deal with a forced swimming cancellation, route changes and a medal shortage.

Athletes were supposed to start the race with a swim at the Aquatic Centre, but with the

pool still out of service, the triathlon was turned into a duathlon.

Having athletes swim in the lake was considered, but ultimately decided against by race director Steve Miller and co-race director Scott McDermott, who deemed water temperatures to be too frigid.

Even though participation numbers were down by about 35 from the previous year, there

were still around 68 volunteers who helped with the event.

A total of 126 adults took part, while 77 children participated in the Splash and Dash event that followed.

McDermott said participating athletes were understanding and upbeat, despite the setbacks.

“The weather was perfect and everything went really well,” McDermott said. “A few flat tires on the bike course, but no real

challenges, and most of the local traffic was courteous and kind.”

Medals were awarded at the end of the race, but due to delays in shipping, there was a shortage.

The issue became evident as medals ran low when the children came in, McDermott said.

The disappointment at the prospect of not receiving a medal was evident on the faces of some children, he added. And that’s when some of the adult racers

showed their generosity, resulting in one of the day’s more poignant moments.

“They were coming up to me in droves handing over their own finisher medals for the kids,” McDermott said. “I must admit, I choked up and my eyes got a little moist. Every kid got a medal. Many of the adult athletes gave up their winning gold, silver or bronze medals. It was amazing.”

Lakers football players invited to play for junior city teams JASMINE O'HALLORAN-HAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Five Lakers football players have been given the chance of a lifetime to play for junior football teams in Edmonton and Calgary.

Sulley Larocque, Kyle Eckenswiller and Landon Rosene all received invitations to play for the Edmonton Huskies, while Skylar Selk and Seth Blagen were invited to play for the Calgary Colts.

Joining the junior football teams means a huge life change in making the transition from minor football to playing on a junior team with bigger, more advanced teammates as old as 22.

The boys commit to at least one season with the team and are required to play most days of the week for several hours each day.

The Colts will play most of their games at McMahon Stadium starting Aug. 16 and ending with a national championship game on Nov. 7.

Colts head coach Matt Blokker said new players in their first year are transformed from boys to men.

“It's a huge jump for them,” Blokker said. “But at the same time these guys are trying to create a balance between life and football so they can reach their aspirations of being football professionals and playing univer-

sity football.”

Blokker said if the players can excel on a junior team, they have a real chance of moving on to playing for higher-level teams such as the Calgary Stampeders.

He said the new players have to adapt to playing with others who have completely different lifestyles. He described a possible situation of a first-year player being lined up beside another older player who is married with children.

This is meant to help new players adapt quickly to different situations in a fastpaced game, where preparing for a game isn’t all about being on the field and running with the ball.

Blokker said the players have to do their homework before playing the game, which means preparing at different levels every week.

“It's a learning process and until you go through your first year, you don't understand it,” Blokker said. “Our job is to teach that and make sure that our guys in their

first year are mentally prepared just as much as they are physically prepared.”

The Edmonton Huskies start their football season Aug. 15 and finish Oct. 11.

They will play many of their games at Clarke Stadium.

Just like the the boys who were invited to play for the Colts, the boys playing for the Huskies are required to be fully committed to the game as well.

Huskies media co-ordinator Hernan Salas said once the season starts, the players are typically on the field Monday to Saturday, with Sunday being one of their only days off.

Salas said being on the team provides players with a supportive family atmosphere where the coaches, management and the board care about the well-being of the players.

“Being around them you feel like family,” Salas said.

“From the board members right to the last player on the roster, there's always interaction and they’re always wanting to help these kids out.

They learn how to respect one another and they are all like brothers at the end.”

Salas said many of the Huskies players have been accepted to play for collegelevel football teams and are equipped with strong work ethics, which they learned in their time playing for the Huskies.

“It's a lot of commitment for these guys and they’re not getting paid,” Salas said.

“These kids work their butts off and they don't just sit at home and wait to practice.

They have daily lives. It's admirable what they go through.”

The most important thing the new players learn is how to work hard, how to train hard and how to keep their personal lives going — all of

which Salas said prepares them for real-life situations as adults.

Lakers head coach Jeremy Braitenback has had the privilege of training these five players into the young football players they are, and said they are exceptional players who have made their coaches very proud.

He said it's not typical for five players to receive invitations to play for the junior teams.

“In the past we haven't been able to put many players on post-secondary teams because the city has always had advantages over our programs, but we're starting to catch up,” Braitenback said.

“The kids are playing as

young as eight years old.

These guys had the benefit of playing since they were 10 years old.”

He said the Central Alberta football program has come a long way with having football all the way down to the Atom level, where the kids can start playing at eight years old, which was an advantage the children in the city seemed to always have.

But now he said there is more of an equal opportunity.

Braitenback said he and the other coaches are very proud of how five of their players have made it on the teams and said it goes to show how far the players have grown within the program.

Police investigating Highway 20 trailer theft May 9 8:41 a.m. – RCMP are investigating the theft of a trailer from a construction site off Highway 20. In the early morning hours of May 9th, an employee witnessed a suspicious truck hooking up to a trailer on the job site

and flee southbound on Highway 20. A large number of tools and equipment were stolen in addition to the trailer.

stop. RCMP stopped a speeding vehicle on Highway 20 at Rainy Creek Road. The male driver exhibited signs of intoxication but refused to provide a roadside breath sample.

As a result, the male was charged with refusal of an approved screening device and is also facing a fine for speeding under the Traffic Safety Act. May 10 12:23 p.m. – An investigation is underway into the theft of a truck on Halsall Street in Sylvan Lake. The owner advised that his truck, a Chevrolet Tahoe, was parked outside his residence overnight. The vehi-

cle was locked but the spare keys were left inside. The truck was recovered in Red Deer a few days later. Two Red Deer males in their thirties are facing charges including possession of stolen property.

May 11 2:03 a.m. – RCMP conducted a traffic stop on Beju Industrial Drive in Sylvan Lake after police noted the driver to be acting erratically. A 22-year-old male from Red Deer was questioned and was found to be in breach of conditions of a recognizance for having contact with a female passenger who was in the vehicle. He was officially

charged under the Criminal Code for breach of a recognizance.

10:49 a.m. – Several vehicles were reported stolen from a business on Industrial Drive in Sylvan Lake. A complainant advised police that the compound at B&T Auto body was illegally entered and a trailer, ATV, and motorcycle were stolen. RCMP continue to investigate.

6:57 p.m. – A break and enter at a rural address near Sylvan Lake is being investigated. A complainant contacted police to advise that three sheds were entered into and an attempt was made to break into a quonset on a property located off Township Road 382 in Red Deer County. Nothing appeared to be stolen from the property.

May 12 6:50 a.m. – A business property on Sylvaire Close in Sylvan Lake was accessed and a truck stolen. Police were advised that the stolen truck was driven through a locked gate on the property after a trailer was detached from the vehicle. A few other items were damaged and/or stolen. A day later, a witness reported suspicious activity at a property on Range Road 24 involving people dismantling a truck matching the description of the stolen vehicle. RCMP attended and arrested a 39-year-old Penhold male and a 29-year-old Sylvan Lake male after they initial-

ly fled the scene in the stolen vehicle. Various charges are pending.

10:55 a.m. – A 35-yearold male from Alhambra is facing multiple charges in relation to a recovered stolen vehicle. A witness reported a suspicious truck with noticeable damage parked at Range Road 13 and Township Road 372.

The male driver eventually headed southbound on Highway 13 where he was stopped by RCMP. An investigation resulted in the male being charged with five counts of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000; one count of possession of property over $5,000; possession of breakin instruments; possession of methamphetamine; and possession of marijuana.

11:28 a.m. – A resident reported the theft of credit cards from a vehicle in Sylvan Lake. A complainant advised police that he left his vehicle parked with the windows open in front of his residence on Ryders Ridge Boulevard. The owner went back inside his house for a few minutes when someone entered the vehicle and stole credit cards from a wallet left inside. The culprit fled the scene before police were contacted.

Hockey Canada to celebrate centennial year in Sylvan Lake Hockey Canada will mark its 100th birthday with a three-day celebration in Sylvan Lake starting May 29.

The organization officially turned 100 in December, and throughout the entire hockey season has been visiting communities all across Canada with its Century Tour caravan filled with interactive historic hockey displays.

The tour will be situated at the Sylvan Lake Canadian Tire on Friday, May 29 from 1 to 7 p.m., Saturday, May 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, May 31 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Former NHL player Rhett Warrener (Calgary Flames, Buffalo Sabres, Florida Panthers) will be on site from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.

During the Sylvan Lake stop, a synthetic ice rink will also be set up, allowing local teams and players to participate in free programming sessions. Hockey Canada’s Mike Dundas will lead on-ice skill sessions, and will be assisted by Sylvan Lake Hockey Camp Staff.

To participate in the sessions, players are required to have played in Sylvan Lake Minor Hockey’s Novice, Atom or PeeWee divisions in the 2014/2015 minor hockey season. Participation is being offered on a firstcome-first-serve basis.

Players participating in all skill sessions are required to wear full hockey gear.

Participants are encouraged to register as early as possible by calling 403-887-2159 as space is limited.

A free skate will take place on the synthetic rink from 3 to 4 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, and is open to anyone interested in playing on the surface. A helmet, gloves, skates, a neck guard, elbow pads and a stick are required.

About four to six volunteers are still needed for the various family fun events that will take place.

Fire hall progress

- Construction on the town’s new fire hall at 50 Street and Beacon Hill Drive is progressing well, with piles and grade beams said to be nearing completion. Construction on the $6.27-million project is expected to wrap up by February 2016.

Helping hands

- The Sylvan Lake Lions football team, along with parents and members of the Sylvan Lake Lions Club, spent time cleaning up Petro Beach on Saturday. The Lions Club sponsors the football team, and the team’s players give back to the club each spring by helping clean the beach, which the club is responsible for. Team staff say the event gives players a chance to say thank you to Lions Club members for all that they do, and feel it also teaches players community spirit.
