Aldergrove youngsters are having a blast at the Spring Soccer series hosted by Aldergrove Youth Soccer Club, Aldergrove Elks Club and Aldergrove Chevron every Monday evening in Aldergrove. This Aldergrove Soccer initiative is a highly popular introduction to the sport which has been lauded by the provincial association. Spring Soccer continues until June 15.

A memorial service for the four members of the Janzen family killed in a tragic murdersuicide will take place this Friday afternoon. Randy Janzen killed his wife Laurel, daughter Emily and sister Shelly in early May, apparently distraught over Emily’s severe struggle with migraine headaches. He said in a Facebook post that he killed all three because he did not want his wife and sister to have to deal with his actions in killing Emily, 19. When police were called to the Aldergrove home of Shelly Janzen after being alerted on May 7 by friends who were concerned about her, it led them to the home of Randy Janzen and his family in the Rosedale area of Chilliwack. He barricaded himself in the house and eventually set it on fire, killing himself. The tragedy has been a deep shock for all who knew the Janzen family, who were longtime residents of Langley. Randy and Shelly’s parents were founding members of Bethel Mennonite Church on 56 Avenue, near 248 Street, and Shelly continued toy be an active member of the congregation. Shelly had taken care of her mother until her death last August. Randy and Shelly grew up in an idyllic rural area on 66 Avenue, just off 200 Street, in the 1960s and 1970s, before the area became home to big box stores and townhouses. Bethel pastor Phil Wheaton said the surviving Janzen family members have asked that the service for all four be held at Bethel, which can accommodate about 600 people. He expects that the church will be packed. The service takes place at Bethel Mennonite Church, 24687 56 Ave , starting at 1 p.m. Friday.

Voter turnout on transit referendum high here By JEFF NAGEL Aldergrove Star

Elections BC has received and screened nearly 655,000 ballots in the Metro Vancouver transit referendum, as of Wednesday morning. That’s an average of 41.9 per cent of registered voters who have marked ballots so far.

There are just a few days left for residents to complete and send in their ballot packages by the deadline of 8 p.m. on Friday, May 29. Mailing them in by Canada Post is no longer recommended in case they don’t arrive in time. Last-minute voters can instead drop their ballot packages off at an

Elections BC plebiscite office. In the Langley area, there is an office at Willowbrook Shopping Centre. It is open during mall hours, but not on Sundays. Metro Vancouver residents are being asked to approve a 0.5 per cent increase in the provincial sales tax to

fund various transportation improvements, including new rapid transit and express bus lines. So far, 39 per cent of Langley City voters have returned their ballots, and 44.5 per cent of Langley Township residents have voted. The voter participation rate in the City is almost double the 20 per cent

participation in the municipal election that was held just last November. Turnout in Langley Township is among the highest in the region. Only New Westminster and the three small communities of Anmore, Belcarra and Lions Bay have had a higher percentage of voters return their ballots.
