Muscular dystrophy fundraiser coming up in June Red Deer man knows the range of challenges that MD brings

ith June approaching, organizers are gearing up for the annual fundraising walk for muscular dystrophy which is set for June 6th.

The Red Deer Walk for Muscular Dystrophy takes place at McKenzie Trails, starting with registration at 1 p.m. The walk starts at 2 p.m.

Besides the walk, there will be entertainment, face painting, photos and food, organizers say. Muscular dystrophy is the name of a group of genetic muscle disorders that are characterized by progressive weakness and wasting of the voluntary muscles that control body movement. Currently there is no cure.

People with CMT usually have problems with their feet and hands, including feet deformity, foot drop, abnormal sensations and loss of fine motor skills. Not everyone with CMT is affected in the same way.

There is a Red Deer group that meets throughout the year, plus it hosts social get-togethers. For City resident Aaron Tarnowski, 43, being a part of a group like this has helped to make a tremendous difference in his life as he deals with the challenges of MD, of which there are more than 100 different forms.

“I was pretty much a healthy kid,” he explained, recalling his early years. “I didn’t really have any problems, except for a minor surgery because I was having trouble keeping my heels on the ground.

We thought it was just a typical tightening of the heel cords.” A few years later, he had to have another surgery. After that, things were normal.

“I played hockey, baseball – did all the things a kid does – camping, dirt biking,” he said. “But I started to notice problems with fatigue, and getting tired easily. I was starting to have more problems climbing stairs, my knees felt weak and I would start just collapsing and finding it very hard to get back up. Eventually, over time, I would have to crawl over to something to grab onto to get up. If there wasn’t something around, I’d have to ask for someone’s assistance, if they could literally boost me up.”

This started when Tarnowski was in his early teens. Over the next couple of years, he saw numerous specialists. “At first they thought I had cerebral palsy, then they thought I had multiple sclerosis.”

Eventually, an Edmonton specialist was able to diagnose the FSH form of muscular dystrophy. He was diagnosed in the mid1980s when he was in Grade 8.

According to Muscular Dystrophy Canada, anyone can be affected by these disorders. Principal symptoms include progres-

sive muscle wasting, weakness, and loss of function.

The severity and progression vary depending on the exact diagnosis and the individual.

“When you are first diagnosed, it’s pretty devastating – you don’t know what your future is going to hold,” he said. “You do what you have to do to deal with it at the time.

“I was so scared about what my future might hold, I didn’t want to think about it.”

But along the way, he started making better, more positive choices about how he was going to handle it. “I got through with the support of friends helping me see the light.

“It’s also about finding the motivation to know that you can still get out there and make a change and make people aware of things like MD and the need for equipment. And nowadays, nothing is cheap – especially when it comes to anything medically-related,” he added, referring to the aids and equipment that those with MD typically need.

Today, Tarnowski is confined to a wheelchair, and has been for about 20 years. For all the challenges he lives with, he is extremely positive and engaging, and eager to reach out and help others who have had and are facing similar health battles.

“I transitioned slowly to using a wheelchair – I tried using my legs as much as I could. Being a young guy, I was kind of in denial – you know what’s going to happen but accepting it is not an easy thing, especially when you are at that age, in your mid-teens. You are playing sports and being active, and all of a sudden you’re sitting on the sidelines watching all your friends. You were in there with them, and now, you just can’t do that.”

Sadly, he was also bullied in those years.

“I was poked fun at lots, but that’s just life.

There are always going to be bullies. But it makes you a stronger person, and it makes you very good at conflict resolution,” he added with a laugh. “I think people who go through life with a disability are stronger in character in a way because they have no choice but to be.

“The focus also changes to what can I do, and what more can I do? And how far can I push myself to be able to do it?”

Tarnowski credits a solid support system of good friends with helping him adjust to all the changes. And that support remains a critical part of staying upbeat. He was instrumental in starting the MD chapter in Red Deer more than 20 years ago.

“We started it more as a support group, but over the years it grew and we got more involved in fundraisers. Anyway we could build awareness and raise money for both research and equipment was our biggest

We know how limited it is to be able to get some of the specialized equipment and there isn’t a lot of funding out there government-wise.”

Meanwhile, Tarnowski is steadfastly optimistic about the scientific advances being made in research, and his outlook on life no doubt fuels his joyful spirit.

“Everybody has a story, and everybody’s story deserves to be heard – no matter how sad or how happy it is. It helps others gain a new perspective on life in general – life as a whole and what people have to go through on a daily basis.

“It could be one story from one person that could strike a nerve in someone and

change their life. It could make them want to do more to raise awareness. If you can really educate people and make them aware – make them aware of what MD is, what it’s all about, how many people it really does affect – people would be a lot more open.

“If I can open up even just one person’s mind, then my job is done. That’s all it takes – because it just takes one person to change the world. I love educating people on that.”

Food bank gives out 43% more hampers in April Agency still short $200,000 in funding during economic downturn

BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express The Red Deer Food Bank handed out 43% more food hampers this past April than in the same month in 2014.

Fred Scaife, executive director of the Red Deer Food Bank said demand has been high.

In April 2014, the food bank gave out 338 hampers and this past April saw 592 hampers given out.

“We have here what is called our self serve area and our clients can come and they can get potatoes and bread and overstock stuff as well,” said Scaife.

“The vast majority of those people don’t actually get hampers. They are the ones that are just about making it – they are right on the cusp. By coming in here and getting a few potatoes and a few loaves of bread, that is just enough to get them through.

“Last year in April we serviced 1,147 of those requests. This year in April we serviced 1,708.”

Scaife said the increase in demand is hand in hand with what is going on with the province’s economy.

“We are seeing more and more clients coming in here that are saying they are laid off more than ever before,” he said.

“When we went through this recession in 2008-2009, our demand was so high that we had to renovate our client service area in order to accommodate that number of people.

“Since that time we have been used to dealing with the volume of people that we were dealing with, that quite frankly we just don’t notice it as much now. Demand continues to rise.”

Scaife added officials at the Red Deer Food Bank began to see demand increase late last year. “We saw this storm coming.

We knew it was going to come.”

He added the downside to the economy decline and the increased demand is that the food bank is still running behind financially.

“We are about $200,000 short right now.

Basically we have enough money to keep operating until the end of July and first part of August.

“We are hoping more money will come in by then,” he said. “Once we got into January and I started to work the figures – the funds had gone down and demand was going up. That is a perfect storm for us.”

Scaife said no matter what the financial situation is, the food bank will not close its doors.

“That will not happen. I will find a way.

We have discussed at length the eventuality of that reality and there are a number of us that are prepared to move forward, even if we are not getting paid, because we know it will be short term.”

He added even if the economy was to rise

and everyone got called back to work, the food bank would still suffer from the effects for six months to a year afterwards.

“Here’s the thing with the Alberta economy – when there is a feeling like there is going to be a downturn, the effect on us is immediate. On the other hand, when the economy improves and stabilizes, it takes anywhere from six months to a year to affect us. People fall behind and they stay behind and it takes a while to get back to where they don’t need our service anymore.”

Meanwhile, the food bank is in need of donations – both food and money. They are also looking for volunteers as they have had to lay off two of their staff members.

“For every staff member that we lay off, we need seven or eight volunteers to replace that person. We have opportunities galore for people here.” efawcett@reddeerexpress.com

Alleged drunk driver makes first court appearance

A man charged with impaired driving causing death made his first court appearance in Red Deer Provincial Court last week.

Chad Ryan Connatty, 30, faces numerous charges after a collision on May 20th in Red Deer that resulted in the death of a 44-year-old Springbrook man. He has been charged with impaired driving causing death, operation of a motor vehicle while driving with a blood alcohol level over .08 causing death, impaired operation of a motor vehicle, blood alcohol exceeding .08 and driving

while disqualified.

Connatty is currently also before the courts on two other matters.

Red Deer RCMP responded to a collision between a Ford 150 and a motorcycle May 20th at 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of 19th St. and 30th Ave. Witnesses attempted to administer CPR to the driver of the motorcycle until Red Deer EMS and firefighters arrived. EMS staff worked hard to save the victim, a 44-yearold Springbrook man.

He was pronounced deceased at the scene and his next of kin has been notified. His name will not be released at the request of the family.

The collision occurred when the truck, which was driving northbound on 30th Ave., attempted to turn left onto 19th St. and collided with the motorcycle, which was driving south on 30th Ave. The victim was wearing a helmet. An RCMP collision analyst attended and the intersection was blocked off for almost three hours while RCMP conducted their investigation.

Connatty was arrested at the scene for impaired driving causing death and was taken into custody.

Connatty will make his second appearance in Red Deer court on Friday.

City boy loses best friend after dog poisoned

BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express One local boy is without his best friend after his fouryear-old dog was poisoned in the backyard of his Kentwood home last week.

Meghan Elgert left her home around noon on May 22nd for just over an hour.

She let both of her dogs outside in the backyard to play - Phineus, a Maltese-Yorkie cross and Eva, a LabradorShepherd cross.

“I came home and I opened the back door and Eva ran in fine and I was calling for Phineus and I thought he was rolling in the dirt because I had just gotten his hair cut short for the summer. I go out there and he’s flopping like a fish and my heart stopped,” she said.

Elgert rushed Phineus to the vet and they discovered he had a really high temperature. He was given some anti-seizure medication and had cold packs and cold cloths on him to try to bring down his temperature.

“They sent me across the street to the vet hospital so that when they could get an IV started, someone would be with him all night. They took him back right away and they sent me home to check my backyard to see if he had gotten into anything.”

Elgert went home and once she arrived, she called for her other dog Eva. “She comes to the top of the stairs and she is foaming at the mouth and her back end is dragging. I quickly grabbed her and loaded her up and took her to the vet too.”

Elgert then returned

home to look in her backyard for any sign of what the dogs may have gotten into. “I walked around the backyard and looked in bushes and in my garden. I couldn’t find anything.”

Once back at the vet, they asked Elgert if she had fed her dogs any chicken.

“I said no. I can’t even remember the last time I ate chicken,” she said. “The vet told me they had pumped Phineus’ stomach and it was full of raw chicken and it looks like it was laced with strychnine.”

Eva was in better shape as Elgert got her to the vet extremely quickly before the poison affected her nervous system.

Both dogs stayed overnight at the emergency vet but veterinarians were unable to save Phineus.

“In that moment my heart just stopped again and it was just an emotional breakdown for me and my boy – it was horrible.”

Elgert’s son, Maddox Berezay, 9, had gotten Phineus as a Mother’s Day gift for Elgert four years ago. But it became quickly apparent that Maddox and Phineus would be best friends.

“It wasn’t my dog,” Elgert said with a laugh. “Maddox cried all day on Saturday and then he couldn’t go to sleep that night. He finally fell asleep at about 2:30 a.m. but for the rest of the night he was just screaming in his sleep, calling for Phineus.

It was so hard to hear as a mom.”

Elgert has reported the incident to police and is hopeful whoever poisoned Phineus will be found and charged.

“I want to encourage other dog owners to sweep your yard before you even let your dogs out to play or keep an eye on them. Hug them everyday because you never know what could happen,” she said. “I never thought in my wildest dreams that this would happen.”

Cruise Night heads to CrossRoads Church parking area

BY JENNA SWAN Red Deer Express The not so subtle sound of engines roaring, the simmering smell of snacks at the many food trucks, the laughter of family of friends – that’s what Red Deer Cruise Night is all about.

What began in 2003 as a few friends gathering weekly to share their common love of anything with an engine has since evolved into one of the largest gatherings of auto lovers in North America.

Winner of the 2014 Tourism Red Deer award for Events Attractions during the Red Deer Experience Awards in April, Red Deer Cruise Night sees on average of around 500 tricked out hot rods and classic cars every week and draws a crowd from not only across western Canada but also a growing crowd from eastern Canada and the U.S. After a longstanding residency in the northeast corner of the Parkland Mall parking lot, the growing attraction has found themselves a new home as of June 11th in the parking lot of CrossRoads Church located west of Red Deer on 32 St.

Event founder and organizer Dave Burden explained the move is due to construction taking place in the mall in upcoming months but he is excited to see how the new location works out. Although the location is now out of Red Deer City limits he believes car lovers will take kindly to the new location with the open highway to ‘clean their cylinders’ on the drive out.

“It’s a bit disappointing we had to move just because we had a good flow at Parkland Mall, but change has usually always proved to be a good thing for us,” explained Burden. “By going out to CrossRoads Church we have the opportunity to start with a blank slate. “The space will be about twice the size we have now and I think it will help to smooth things out as far as overly aggressive drivers opening up their engines in town right on 67 St. which has caused complaints in the past and I really think traffic will just flow better there.”

This year alone Burden has received inquires from as far as Detroit, Texas and California all expressing interest in visiting the renowned show. Burden believes the increasing view of Cruise Night as a tourist attraction will lead to an increase in the local economy as well.

“With people starting to travel from further away to come see us, that means they’re going to be spending the night in Red Deer usually, they’ll be buying food and fuel here,” said Burden. “Then you have the people coming in locally from the surrounding area who might stop for supper before or after the

event and maybe fuel up here as well. “Even people from Red Deer tend to go for a drive and hit up an ice cream shop after or go for a beer or coffee – so it gets them out and gets that extra flow into the area.”

Following their big win at the Red Deer Experience Awards, Burden was determined to make the event

Online forum supports women recovering from cancer Women in Alberta recovering from gynecological cancers can now discuss their concerns, securely and anonymously, as part of an online support group that’s being evaluated by researchers.

The 12-week, professionally moderated forum is part of a study led by Alberta Health Services researchers in Calgary and Edmonton. Women can learn about how treatment can affect them sexually and how to manage these changes. They are able to post questions, messages or comments, and interact with others in the

same situation. “Women often have concerns about the effects of cancer treatment on their body image and sexuality,” says Dr. John Robinson, a psychologist with the Tom Baker Cancer Centre’s Department of Psychosocial & Rehabilitation Oncology.

For many years, online support groups have been available to different patient populations but their effectiveness in helping women with gynecological cancers has not been well studied, particularly where the focus is on recovering sexually.

To be eligible for the study, women must

have completed their cancer treatment between three months to five years ago.

Alberta researchers are looking for about 80 women to participate in the study, which is also underway in Ontario, B.C., and New York. In total, 520 women will take part. Pollinator parks approved for City

Council voted in favour of supporting the dedication and promotion of four Red Deer parks as dedicated pollinator parks, including City Hall Park, Snell Gardens, Bower Ponds and Maskepetoon Park.

Sites were chosen using a number of principles that guide service levels and permitted uses for parks in Red Deer. These principles include such considerations as environmental/ ecological protection, protecting our history, park development and service levels, public access and park uses, existing design and function, and innovation and change. Each site includes habitat, pollen sources, interpretive access, and pesticide limitations. Interpretive signage will be installed to describe the unique features and care taken to protect and promote pollinators at each location.

“The City is doing excellent things in our parks system and we want to highlight those efforts and share our knowledge with residents and agricultural enterprises,” said Trevor Poth, parks superintendent. “Many of our tactics can be easily incorporated into private yards of residents to help promote healthy areas for pollina-

tors to live.”

The dedication of pollinator parks will provide opportunities to preserve and enhance pollinator habitat; celebrate the successful initiatives that protect pollinator species within Red Deer’s park system; and raise awareness regarding the importance of protecting pollinators.

Native pollinators include bumblebees, butterflies, wasps, moths, flies, beetles, hummingbirds and bats.

Meanwhile, council also approved a new pesticide policy Monday afternoon.

The City will continue to reduce its use of pesticides on City-owned and maintained public lands with City council approving a policy on the cosmetic use of pesticides.

The approved policy limits the use of pesticides to control nuisance weeds except within performance sports fields; within Class A sports fields and no closer than 30m from a play structure or school; within arterial roadways; noxious and prohibited noxious weeds as identified in the Provincial Weed Control Act; in mulched tree wells and shrub beds; on concrete, aggregate, asphalt or similar surfaces; to control rodents; and to control nuisance insects.

The policy also addresses the need to continue exploring and testing methods of weed control that do not rely on pesticides as per the City’s Environmental

OPINION War on drunk driving Time and time again we hear of people choosing to get behind the wheel after they have been drinking and they risk the lives not only of themselves, but of others as well.

Just last week we saw another man charged with impaired driving causing death. Although his matter is before the court and of course he is innocent until proven guilty, it is terrible to even hear that he has been charged with impaired driving and that alcohol could possibly be involved.

Impaired driving in Red Deer is certainly an issue. Monthly we hear about people being charged and the numbers seem consistent.

We all know the consequences, so why is the message not sinking in? It’s the same old thing with human nature – ‘it will never happen to me. I’ll never get caught. Just this once.

I don’t have far to go. I don’t have another way home.’ The excuses go on and on and on, and it’s just getting very tiresome to the community at large.

When people drink, you basically aren’t dealing with a rational, normal person anymore. Gone are the inhibitions, gone is the common sense, and so really, education and penalties only can go so far when people are stuck in a drunken haze.

Still, however, penalties need to be tougher – much tougher – so they are something of a deterrent. It’s mind-boggling how lightly this issue is still treated in the courts.

To show where this province is at in terms of some statistics, as part of promoting traffic safety for the May Long Weekend and Canada Road Safety Week, Alberta’s Integrated Traffic Units focused their weekend efforts on reducing impaired driving, distracted driving, speeding and getting people to buckle up.

Integrated Traffic Units were out in full force during the long weekend, with several units operating at full capacity in order to respond to impaired drivers, speeders and distracted driving.

Between May 16th and May 19th officers laid more than 4,500 charges across the province.

This included 56 drivers who had been drinking and were removed from the roads, compared to 35 in 2014 and 50 in 2013; 4,369 speeding violations issued compared to 3,960 in 2014 and 4,049 in 2013; 39 drivers who were charged with distracted driving, compared to 60 in 2014 and 68 in 2013; 60 people were charged with failing to use seatbelts or child safety seats compared to 167 in 2014 and 240 in 2015.

Numbers like these should be disturbing to everyone.

As a community we need to find a way to get this message across. The effects are certainly far-reaching, and as we all know, these tragedies are of course completely preventable.

Alberta NDP must act quickly to ensure change endures It is probably difficult for people who have not lived in Alberta to understand the significance of our recent election of an NDP government: after 44 years of one-party-state politics, we have proved to ourselves that political change is possible by making that change. Post-election polls show that Albertans are largely satisfied with the change. A substantial portion – many of us not cardcarrying New Democrats – are ecstatic about it.

As a writer in Macleans put it, Albertans, “Are celebrating a passing from sickness into health, a seizure of freedom for Alberta.”

Albertans resolved, as an article in the Calgary Sun said, to “throw the bums out,” and finally we did.

The result is nothing short of intoxicating. But now that the PCs are de-

Two big picture items scream out for Albertans’ attention. On the substantive policy side, we need to develop an across-theboard sustainability agenda. Alberta’s oil sands, for example, constitute Canada’s fastest growing source of GHG emissions and an ecosystem - and community-destroying phenomenon of gargantuan proportions.

But dealing with the oil sands is only the beginning.

Other examples abound.

the largest and fastest growing gap between rich and poor in Canada. This undermines our social sustainability and our cities have expanded to accommodate rapid population growth in a profoundly unsustainable way. As Naheed Nenshi, mayor of Calgary, has often observed, we have built cities we can’t afford to operate and maintain.

On the democratic process side, we need to strengthen our democracy while we can by enacting election finance reform and by adopting a fairer, more representative voting system. There is no doubt, as National Post columnist Andrew Coyne and others such as Fair Vote Canada constantly remind us, our voting system is shockingly unrepresentative.

The results of the recent Alberta election illustrate

the problem: the New Democrats got 40% of the popular vote but won 62% of the seats. The political preferences of many Albertans are not reflected in the make-up of the new Legislature.

And this is a typical result of our electoral system: the PCs’ fierce dominance of Alberta’s politics for so long was facilitated and exaggerated by our unfair electoral system. We need to adopt proportional representation, a system where the fraction of the vote received is fairly – proportionately – reflected in the allocation of seats among the contesting parties. But to address our enormous sustainability challenges and electoral reform, we have to ensure our democracy is never again dominated by big money. In Alberta, that means money from the fossil fuel industry (oil, gas

and coal). Contributions to parties and candidates must be limited to individuals; corporations and other organizations, unions included, must be banned from making political contributions.

Appropriate limits, much lower than the current ones, must also be enacted.

This part of the Alberta reform agenda is actually pretty straightforward and there are good examples in Canada as to how these changes can be made in law and policy. Further, election finance reform was an NDP election promise. Albertans have to insist that this reform be enacted soon so that we don’t miss this opportunity while a party that is not in bed with industry holds power.

After 44 years of PC power, it is good that another party has a decisive major-

ity for now. Albertans need time to establish some kind of balance after decades of PC dominance and the rot that set in after years of uninterrupted power.

But we need to get to a better, more representative, political system as soon as possible and that can only come through adoption of proportional representation. It’s a truly wonderful time to be a politically engaged Albertan.

There’s a hopefulness, one Albertans haven’t experienced for decades. But huge issues have been long ignored by a series of lazy, entitled and business-subservient PC governments.

The work to be done is immense, but it’s also exciting. Let’s get on with it.

Invasive mussels found on Sylvan Lake-bound boat

BY STUART FULLARTON Courtesy of the Sylvan Lake News A close call along the shores of Sylvan Lake saw a mussel-infested boat barred from entering the water over the May long weekend.

The boat was intercepted during a mandatory inspection at the Sunbreaker Cove boat launch, just as the trained inspectors manning the site were getting ready to end their shift.

“They determined through the protocols that we train them in that the boat was high risk, and so they did a high risk inspection — a very detailed inspection — and they discovered mussels on the watercraft,” said Cindy Sawchuk, a strategic advisor with Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development.

The incident proved both the effectiveness of the province’s mandatory boat inspections and the reality of the threat posed by invasive species, Sawchuk added.

Invasive species such as zebra and quagga mussels have no known control measure, and their presence can cause irreparable harm to aquatic systems and vital underwater infrastructure.

For that reason, prevention is key.

“Clean, drain, dry — that’s the message that we want to get across,” said Sawchuk.

“We can inspect boats, but it’s really up to the boaters, because if they start to clean, drain and dry their boat every time they leave a water body, and boaters in Alberta start to change their behaviour, we’re ef-

fectively eliminating the risk of transporting any of these species.”

The mussels found on the Sylvan Lakebound boat were believed to have originated in Ontario, where the boat was purchased from. The boat’s owner, Sawchuk

said, was “Very co-operative and extremely compliant.

“His exact words to me were, ‘I don’t want to be responsible for spreading the plague into Alberta waters,’ and so they were quite mortified,” said Sawchuk. “If

mussels do get introduced, it would be very bad.”

POLICE BRIEFS MAN CHARGED WITH IMPAIRED DRIVING Daniel Lapalme of Red Deer, 51, has been charged after several related collisions on 67th St. on March 29th.

At 4:50 p.m. March 29, RCMP responded to a 911 call reporting several related collisions on 67th St. A man in a truck was struck from behind by a grey Bonneville while he was stopped at a red light on 67th St. When he exited his truck, the driver of the suspect Bonneville backed up, striking the vehicle behind it, then drove around the truck, grazing the victim. The Bonneville then executed a U-turn and headed westbound on 67th St., where it struck a third vehicle at 65th Ave. and was pinned there until RCMP arrived.

Lapalme has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, failing to stop or remain at the scene where a person was injured, impaired operation of a motor vehicle with blood alcohol over .08 and impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm.

LLOYD HALL WANTED ON CANADA-WIDE WARRANT Red Deer RCMP are asking for public assistance to locate 49-yearold Lloyd James Hall, who is wanted on a number of warrants. Hall has been unlawfully at large since June 14th and RCMP believe he is in Central Alberta. Hall’s warrants pertain to thefts of vehicles in Drayton Valley and Edson, being unlawfully at large in Red Deer, and a Canada-wide warrant for breach of parole conditions. Hall also goes

SEARCH WARRANT EXECUTED At noon on May 19th, the Priority Crimes Task Force executed a search warrant on a rural property in the area of RR 284 and Township Road 374. The search warrant came after a targeted task force investigation related to stolen vehicles and other stolen property.

Task force members from Red Deer and Blackfalds executed the search warrant, with support and equipment from Ponoka RCMP, Innisfail RCMP and Police Dog Services.

Police seized stolen property including five trucks, four quads, three motorcycles, construction supplies including window glass, a trailer filled with tools, more large quantities of tools, three rifles and a sawed off shotgun. RCMP continue to look for a 2013 Dodge Viper they believe is connected to this investigation; the Viper was reported stolen from a rural residence near Burnt Lake Trail on May 17th. This vehicle was originally white, but police believe it may have been spray painted black.

One man was taken into custody without incident at the residence and RCMP continue to actively investigate.

RCMP will release an update as the investigation unfolds, including the name of the man taken into custody and charges against him once those charges have been sworn before the courts.

IMPAIRED DRIVERS ARRESTED Between May 12th – 18th, Red Deer RCMP Traffic Services arrested and charged four impaired drivers; the arrests were made during a series of traffic campaigns focusing on impaired driving and during a May 16th check stop. As well as testing drivers for impairment by alcohol, Red Deer RCMP also use certified Drug Recognition Experts who are trained to identify and charge drivers impaired by street drugs, prescription drugs, or a combination of intoxicating substances.

During this one-week period in Red Deer, RCMP arrested and charged four impaired drivers (over 80 mg%) arrested and charged – each had their vehicle seized for three days.

One person was charged with refusal to provide a breath sample, 11 roadside breath tests were administered, one field sobriety test (physical coordination test) was administered, two new drivers with any amount of alcohol in their system had 30-day license suspensions and their vehicles were seized for seven days, as well, two 72-hour suspensions for blowing 50-100 mg% were given and those people had their vehicles were seized for three days.

During the check stop, one 24hour drug-related suspension was given, three suspended drivers were stopped and if it was their first offence, their vehicles were seized for 30 days.

If it was their second or subsequent offence, their vehicle was seized for 60 days. Also, three were charged for not having insurance, two were charged for failing to stop at an intersection, one was given Graduated Driver’s License-related charge, two people were charged under the Gaming and Liquor Act, 19 had other provincial charges laid against them, five had other Criminal Code charges and three warrants were executed.

At 4:20 a.m. on May 16th, RCMP received a report that a man with a handgun entered the store, threatened the staff member and demanded cash.

The suspect departed on foot carrying a white plastic grocery bag with an undisclosed amount of cash; he was seen walking eastbound.

RCMP and Police Dog Services responded and made sweeps of the area but were unable to locate the suspect.

The suspect is described as Caucasian, about 5’7” or 5’8” tall and about 190 lbs. He is in his early to mid-30s and had dark hair and was wearing blue jeans and a black UnderArmour brand hoodie with a large logo on the chest.

RCMP SEARCH FOR JEWELRY THIEF Red Deer RCMP are looking for public assistance to identify the man who stole a diamond ring worth approximately $6,500 from People’s Jewellers on May 15th.

At 2:40 p.m. on May 15th, RCMP were called to the jewelry store in Parkland Mall after the suspect ran from the store with a women’s diamond Vera Wang engagement ring.

The suspect was seen running southbound down the grassed hill toward the river.

RCMP Police Dog Services responded and established a track, following it down a trail where RCMP located discarded clothing that matched the description of the clothes the suspect wore during the theft.

A witness noted a man matching the suspect description get into a waiting truck in the Riverside Industrial area.

The suspect is described as Caucasian, about 5’8” tall with a thin build (about 145 lbs). He had short, dirty blond hair, bright blue eyes and was wearing an oversized, faded black suit with a burgundy coloured dress shirt and a t-shirt underneath.

The suspect vehicle is described as a battered-looking late model white Dodge Dakota driven by an older man with grey hair.

Recognizing the many achievements of Morris Flewwelling June 2nd marks the birthday of one of Red Deer’s most distinguished public servants, volunteers and philanthropists, Morris Flewwelling. There are few aspects of our community that have not been directly touched by this very active, energetic and creative individual.

F. Morris Flewwelling was born in 1941 and grew up in the village of Mirror, north east of Red Deer.

Shortly after he was born, Morris’ dad, Ross, left to work on the Alaska Highway. Ross then served overseas with the Canadian Army. More than four years would pass before Morris and his mother Marjory were finally reunited with his dad.

As a child, Morris took a very strong interest in libraries, culture and gardening. He decided to make education his career.

He graduated from the University of Alberta in 1964 with a Bachelor of Education degree, majoring in the biological sciences and minoring in history.

He first got a job as a teacher at Alix, but later moved into Red Deer. He furthered his education with post-graduate studies.

He subsequently became a guidance counsellor and special education teacher.

In 1968, he started the first alternate school program in Alberta for teenager students who found traditional classrooms a challenge.

The year 1968 is also the year Morris married Hazel Waldburger, a fellow teacher and also a dynamic community volunteer. Morris and Hazel are the proud parents of two sons – Michael and David.

DAWE tions and projects. Some of the first were the Red Deer Allied Arts Council, Central Alberta Theatre, the United Way, the Christmas Bureau, Red Deer Community Band Society, the Red Deer Recreation Board and the University of Alberta Alumni Association.

In 1974, Morris successfully ran for City council.

This increased his community involvements with such organizations as the Red Deer Public Library, Red Deer Archives, and Red Deer Museum.

Subsequently, Morris left the City council and the Red Deer Public School District and became the executor director of the Red Deer and District Museum (1978). During his tenure and as a result of his hard work and skill, the Red Deer Museum was named the model institution of its size in Canada.

Morris’s community, regional, provincial and national involvements became a virtual torrent of activity.

He was a founding director of the Alberta Historical Resources Foundation.

He served as president of both the Alberta Museums Association and the Canadian Museums Association.

He was a director of Nature Canada, founding director of the Waskasoo Museum Foundation, a Governor of Heritage Canada, founding chair of the Heritage Community Foundation, founding chair of Ellis Bird

Farm, co-founder of the Central Alberta Historical Society and chair of the Red Deer College Fine and Performing Arts Centre Development Committee.

One of his proudest accomplishments was being the founder and first chair of the Red Deer Community Foundation. The Community Foundation now is the leading philanthropic organization in Red Deer.

As he retired from the Red Deer Museum, Morris successfully ran for City council again. He was a councillor for nine years.

He then was elected as mayor three times in a row (2004, 2007 and 2010).

Morris has received a vast number of awards and distinctions including Citizen of the Year (1982), Alberta Achievement Award (1991), Canada 125 Medal (1992), Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal (2003), Alberta Centennial Medal (2005), Honorary Bachelor of Arts

Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from Red Deer College (2014) and the Alberta Order of Excellence (2014).

In 1997, he received Canada’s highest civilian honour when he was named to the Order of Canada.

However, Morris is particu-

larly proud of being named Chief Mountain Eagle (2012) by the Cree First Nation for his work with First Nations across Canada.

CITY BRIEFS WATER MAIN FLUSHING Starting last week, crews began the annual water main flushing and inspection of fire hydrants after the winter months.

Each year from May to October crews flush water mains in an effort to improve water quality, remove sediment and minerals from the walls of the pipes, identify valves that require repair, replace stagnant water with fresh water, and determine which areas require more frequent flushing. Water will be flushed through fire hydrants and it will drain onto the streets and back into the storm sewer system through catch basins. Hydrants are flushed for up to 30 minutes and the water being flushed may appear red at first as it has remained stagnant at the bottom of the hydrant for more than a year.

This year, water mains in Downtown, Anders, West Park and Highland Green will be flushed, with a total of 220 flushes planned.

Residents may notice cloudy water while flushing of the water main in their block is underway. Cloudy water is not a health concern and can be cleared easily by running cold water taps for

10 to 20 minutes.

CONSTRUCTION CLOSES 30 AVE. NORTH OF 67 ST. A portion of 30 Avenue (Range Road 272), north of 67 St. closed this week as construction gets underway for the 67 Street/30 Avenue Expansion Project.

The closure is necessary for underground utility installation and road construction which will see this section of roadway paved. The road closure will remain in place until the end of the summer.

A detour route is in place along Township Road 384 and Range Road 271.

The 67 Street and 30 Avenue Expansion Project began in 2014 and is needed to facilitate growth and development in Red Deer’s northeast.

This year’s work includes extending 30 Ave. two kilometres north, extending 67 St. one kilometre east and constructing a modern two lane - roundabout northeast of the current bend. Construction on the roundabout will begin late summer.

STYNER REMEMBERED WITH SPECIAL AWARD Marlin Styner was remembered for his contribution of service as part of the annual Red Deer College Community Awards last week.

Styner, a graduate of the business administration program at RDC in 1990, left a long legacy at RDC, in the community and across Canada. In 1981, at the age of 18, he was involved in a vehicle collision that left him paralyzed.

About nine months after the collision, he was released from rehabilitation and exactly a year after the injury, he started college.

Following this, he looked beyond the struggles of life

as a quadriplegic and embraced a new role as an advocate for people with disabilities. He became a sought after speaker through the nation, speaking on behalf of the PARTY (Prevent Alcohol and Risk Related Trauma in Youth) program.

He spoke to more than one million grade school students across the country, educating on injury prevention programs, and inspiring through his perseverance and passion. Along with his works, Styner also gave his time, volunteering with more than 20 organization in which he provided leadership, advice and inspiration to many.

As an alumnus of RDC, Styner also served on boards, committees, task forces and other causes.

Styner was also bestowed with several awards and recognitions including the Alberta Centennial Medal for Service to the Community and the Mayor’s Special Recognition for Humanitarianism among others.

In 2012, the Premier’s Council on the Status of Persons with Disabilities created the Marlin Styner Achievement Award, which annually recognizes a deserving individual living with a disability.

The award was presented to Styner’s wife Diane Gramlich, in recognition of his contribution to RDC and Central Alberta.

Arens receives additional nine months in jail

BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express Rodney Arens was sentenced to nine months in jail and received a 27-month driving prohibition as well as a lifetime weapons ban for charges in relation to an incident in Sylvan Lake in 2013.

Arens, 37, of Red Deer, previously pleaded guilty to impaired care and control of a motor vehicle, obstructing an officer and resisting arrest and failing to comply with conditions.

He pleaded not guilty to numerous drug related charges including a trafficking charge which he was found not guilty of last month in Red Deer court.

Arens was sentenced in Red Deer court earlier this month.

The charges stem from Dec. 21st, 2013 after Sylvan Lake RCMP responded to a complaint of a possible impaired driver in the Town. Upon locating the parked and running vehicle at the Fas Gas on Main

Street, police located the driver, slumped over the steering wheel. After waking the driver and speaking to him, he was arrested for impaired care or control of a motor vehicle.

Police have said after a search of the male and the vehicle, they located cash and crack cocaine and a small amount of marijuana.

Arens is currently serving nearly six years in prison after being found guilty of impaired driving causing death after a crash claimed the life of a young City boy in 2010.

Last month, Arens took the stand during his trial and said just before the 2013 incident in Sylvan Lake, he was in a good place.

“Things were going well at that point and there were more positive things going on in my life.”

But just days before his arrest he was fighting with his girlfriend at the time and he took, “A few days off and indulged. I was partying and I shouldn’t have

been doing that.”

He testified that while he was staying with one of his employees in Sylvan Lake he began to do a large amount of drugs and was drinking in excess as well.

Arens testified that on a “normal” day he would do three to four grams of crack cocaine.

“At the time I was feeling a little bit suicidal and I was getting whatever I could get and as much of it as I could get. I went three to four days without sleep.”

He also testified that he could not remember how he got to the Fas Gas in which police located him at.

He added although there was a large number of drugs found in the truck he was in, he was not trafficking the drugs – some of the drugs were his and some were his employees.

“I wasn’t planning on bumping into law enforcement – I thought I would have had it all smoked by then,” he said. efawcett@reddeerexpress.com

Human trafficking case held over in court

Varinder Sidhu, 49, and Ravinder Sidhu, 46, both from Red Deer, have been charged with organizing the coming into Canada of one or more persons by means of abduction, fraud, deception or use or threat of force or coercion, employing a foreign national in a capacity in which the foreign national is not authorized under this Act to be employed and counseling, inducing, aiding or abetting or attempts to counsel, aid or abet any person to directly

or indirectly misrepresent or withhold material facts relating to a relevant matter that induces or could induce an error in the administration of this Act is guilty of an offence.

Their lawyer, Will Willms asked the matter return to court on June 30th.

On April 3rd Calgary Federal Serious Organized Crime officers completed a 10-month investigation. Lois Leone (nee Bennett) of Red Deer passed away at the Red Deer Regional Hospital on May 21, 2015.

Lois was born in Oshawa Ontario on September 24, 1936. Lois is survived by her husband Murray Barnard, daughter Lisa Barnard, son David Barnard (Karen), her 3 grandchildren Joshua, Sarah and Matthew Barnard, as well as her sisters Doris Nelson (Sam), Heather Jansen and brother Ray Bennett (Denise). Lois is predeceased by her parents Charles and Elma Bennett, her brother Ford Bennett (Doris) and sister Wilma Bennett and brother in law Scott Jansen. She will also be missed by family members including nieces and nephews as well as friends. The family would like to thank the doctors and nursing staff at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Units 33 and 32. Donations may be made in Lois’ memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

ENTERTAINMENT Folk-rockers Sea Perry set to hit The Hideout

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express Sudbury-based folk-rockers Sea Perry are serving up some of the catchiest tunes heard so far this year, and they’re bringing the goods to The Hideout on May 29th.

As bassist Shawn Fisher says, each performance, be it an opening spot for such likeminded acts as The Trews, Great Big Sea or The Strumbellas, or on a festival bill with dozens of other artists or their own headlining sets, Sea Perry sees it as an opportunity to change lives, change people’s perspectives or touch somebody in some way.

Chris Milligan (guitar/vocals), Fisher (bass/keys) and Chad Bouchard (drums) - are ready to take their relationship with music lovers to the next level with the release of their full-length debut Do What You Do. “We’ve all been writing music and working with bands for years – it’s always been our mission to take music to the next level.

That’s kind of the way we met, in our native Sudbury – we had played some shows with each other’s bands and started to become friends in that way,” explained Fisher.

With other projects wrapping up, the guys decided to join forces back in the spring of 2013 – and the concept for Sea Perry was sparked. “We started writing some music and we realized that we were doing something that we really liked, and there was a very similar kind of mantra among the three of us. All of our aspirations are the same, so that really helped us – it strengthened our resolve to do this project.”

Recorded in Toronto with producer Michael Jack, who’s worked with such Canadian and international talent as Bono, Rush and Nelly Furtado, the 10 tracks were laid down with an ear towards bringing to life that stage show while also accentuating the stellar musicianship and remarkable songwriting skills throughout the group.

“We wanted to work with somebody that had some real weight to their resume,” said Fisher. “We wanted to deliver these songs in the right form, and that they stayed true through the recording process,” he said.

“There’s a big difference between ‘live’ music and how something translates to an album.”

Angus-MacDonald about working on the CD with him but he was a bit busy at the time. Jack subsequently sent them a message saying how much he liked their music and that he would love to collaborate at some point. They clicked, and the production process was soon underway.

Fisher also credits the tight-knit nature of the trio with bringing out the best Sea Perry has to offer, explaining that, like all great relationships, this one is built on honesty and vulnerability, each of the three willing to fight it out to get something that’s definitively something they can take pride in.

“There are times when we’re writing music that we get so passionate about an idea that we’re trying to push forward that we really force each other to get to a very uncomfortable zone emotionally,” he said. “But sometimes you need to get to the brink of your humanity to get something out that’s really significant.”

Overall, he said the recording of the project proved a pretty seamless affair.

“When it comes to structuring the songs, we spend a lot of time working on that and it’s very collaborative. So we know where all the changes are – we are very conscious of how it’s going to transmit to the studio and how it’s going to sound at the end.

“When we go in, we have a very specific process of what we do, and so far that’s really working for us.”

Whatever that process involves, something is clearly working - Do What You Do is filled with what has been described as ‘giant sing-a-long choruses, pristine radio-ready melodies, chiming guitars and steady, driving rhythms’.

“It’s happy, but it’s got a real grit to it.”

The record is also filled with lyrics and stories that run the gamut of coming to grips with your own mortality and moving forward in the face of whatever might come your way to, of course, relationships

of all kinds. For Fisher, as with the other guys, a love for music surfaced early on. “I grew up all around musicians. My grandmother played everything – she was a very talented woman. Everyone on my mom’s side was just very musically inclined naturally, and my mother exposed me to a lot of different music.

“And my dad was a crooner – he’d be singing these songs non-stop. He loved Frank Sinatra. And that’s actually where my voice lies – in that register. I’d definitely say I was inspired by my father in that regard.”

Ultimately, the guys can’t wait to hit the road and introduce their music to a much broader audience. There is nothing like that connection of artist to audience.

“The band wasn’t born out of writing for an album, the album was born out of a love of playing ‘live’ and then having the challenge of putting it onto a recording.” editor@reddeerexpress.com

Cornerstone stages The Little Mermaid

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express The talented troupe of Cornerstone Youth Theatre is gearing up for their latest show, The Little Mermaid.

Performances run May 29th30th and June 5th-6th at New Life Fellowship Church, with curtain at 7 p.m. There are 3 p.m. shows on May 30th and June 6th as well.

Journey ‘under the sea’ with Ariel and her aquatic friends in this musical production.

In an underwater kingdom, the beautiful mermaid Ariel longs to leave her home - and her fins and live in the land above the sea.

But first she’ll have to defy her father, King Neptune, make a deal with the evil sea witch, Octavia, and convince the handsome Prince Eric that she’s the girl whose enchanting voice he’s been seeking.

“I think that The Little Mermaid is a story that is so much about growing up,” explained director Tori Grebinski.

“Sometimes we know in our hearts what is right for us even when life’s barriers seem overwhelming.

“But you never know what you truly believe unless you put yourself out there and try.

“I think there is something to be said for those who don’t let skeptics or conformity get in their way of them reaching their dreams.”

The Little Mermaid was originally written by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen and it was first published in 1837. Over the years, the story has been adapted to various media, including musical theatre and animated film.

“We have 62 students in this session. And we have 11 on crew – so 73 altogether. It’s amazing.”

She said the rendition Cornerstone selected isn’t the Disney version, but it’s a wonderful retelling of the classic story just the same.

“We have quite a few main speaking roles, but we also have a large chorus as well,” she explained.

“There are many fun char-

acters in our show.

“It’s a story we all know and love, and (playwright) Mark Russell did an amazing job of creating his own interpretation of a story we all know and love. Sometimes we find some resolutions through some unique circumstances, however Russell keeps the storyline and the music very ‘Disney-esque’ and true to the image we all have in our minds of what The Little Mermaid is.

“It’s turned out to be a tonne of fun making this show our own.

“I don’t think the kids even notice it’s not the Disney version anymore, it’s the version that they love and it’s really fun. The songs are still super-fun to dance to.”

“CORNERSTONE IS A GROUP LIKE NO OTHER – NOT ONLY DO YOU FEEL A CONSTANT BUZZ OF EXCITEMENT BUT YOU ALSO FEEL AN OVERWHELMING SENSE OF ACCEPTANCE, FAMILY AND TOGETHERNESS. TORI GREBINSKI Grebinski has certainly had her hands full with such an enormous cast, but she’s taken it all in stride.

She admits it’s been challenging at times, but adds that, “I also think those challenges are the best part.

“Every child and every volunteer comes into every show with so many wonderful talents and ideas.

My job is to try and channel those ideas, so it’s the best sort of ‘problem’ to have in my opinion.”

Meanwhile, Cornerstone Youth Theatre staff work to provide theatrical opportunities throughout the year. There are week-long musical theater summer day camps offered in several locations around the Red Deer area.

Camps are offered for ages five to 18.

They also offer 10-week sessions during the school year. A variety of classes are offered (core classes in drama, voice and dance, plus specialty classes which vary from session to session).

As for The Little Mermaid, there are plenty of reasons for its undeniable staying power and enduring popularity, said Grebinski, who has choreographed the last four Cornerstone shows, summer camp shows and has also co-directed one production.

“I think The Little Mermaid reminds us of the struggles we face growing up and not only the consequences of our actions, but it also has an ending that we all desire for our own lives, I think. So we kind of grab onto that.”

As for directing, she’s said it’s turned out to be an amazing experience.

“Cornerstone is a group like no other – not only do you feel a constant buzz of excitement but you also feel an overwhelming sense of acceptance, family and togetherness.

“All the hard work that’s put into everything really shows.

“It inspires me to see how everyone comes together to create this work of art.”

Dan Sinasac Band at Fratters The Dan Sinasac Band is heading to Fratters this Friday, May 29th.

Sinasac is a singer/songwriter with a passion for soulful, funky rhythm and blues. Growing up across the river from Detroit, his stylings were influenced by the sounds churning out of the motor city. A master on the Hammond B3 organ, his ability to connect with his audience has made him a favourite on the local music scene.

Sinasac began performing throughout Windsor and gained experience in the middle of a music revolution in the late sixties through the 1970s.

In 1983, he moved to Edmonton and created an original blues project called Jack Shadow. As front man and keyboard player, he came into his own as a composer and began gaining recognition within the Edmonton music community.

Performing at such venues as the Sidetrack Café, Festival Place, The Grinder and the Capital Hill Pub gave him the experience as a performer and the confi-

dence to write, produce and record Burnt Piano. He created a project that was true to the blues form, and his roots as a down home soul and R&B artist.

He currently owns and operates a recording studio in Sherwood Park -- DanLyn Studios.

It’s certainly something of a dream come true, as he’s always been fascinated with the whole recording process.

Collaborating with others in his busy studio provides a constant source of joy and creative inspiration.

His new double disc Street Corner History is a lifetime of original material, both electric and acoustic.

Rounding out the band are Gerry Moellering (guitar), Dean Pierno (drums) and Kim Lesaca (bass guitar).

“I’m so much more complete with my band, said Sinasac. “I’m truly blessed to work with such gifted, dedicated musicians.”

Sam Weber brings artistic excellence to Bo’s on June 1st

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express West coast-based singer Sam Weber certainly has a way with crafting richly descriptive tunes – the gifted artist performs June 1st at Bo’s.

Hailing from North Saanich, B.C., the 22-year-old singer-songwriter and guitarist has caught the imagination of listeners and media across the world.

His masterful debut full-length CD, Shadows in the Road, is the culmination of years already spent focused on touring and recording. Shadows in the Road, which was released in the fall of 2014, has been described as an album of ‘intense contrasts, emotional entanglement, and mercurial, enthralling arrangements.’

Opening with the powerful, dream-like title track, things pick up steam with the engaging, infectious Right Hearted. Weber’s style shines through again in tunes like Something to Say and the gentle, ethereal tones of August. Weber has a knack for digging deep and writing songs that really touch the listener; there’s a storytelling richness that surfaces throughout. Matched with compelling musical foundations, there’s hardly a misstep to be found. The disc closes with a tune called Peace – again, a testament to Weber’s maturity – already – as an artist.

Weber credits his folks and

family in general with offering a great place to grow in his musical giftings. “I have a really strong foundation,” he notes of his parents and brother, during a break from traveling through Thunder Bay. He started off with the proverbial piano lessons, and even though he had an exceptional teacher, that didn’t last overly long. “I didn’t gravitate to the formal, technical approach to it.”

What he did find appealing were rock tunes on the radio featuring intense guitar solos – so when he picked up a guitar around the age of 12, essentially, a creative path was found. “I just started playing with friends and at school.

“I’d hear these epic guitar solos, and that’s what really hooked me. I realized also that what was engaging me was that those were brilliantly written songs – it was like a catharsis – listening to a great song. So playing the guitar was like a gateway into all of that, too.”

A penchant for songwriting started to surface around that time as well. And really, he’s never looked back. Playing with a number of local bands would follow over those formative years, and his gift for songwriting continued to mature as well.

From that point, he basically knew that working as a musician would pretty much be the life for him, adding he also knew it likely wouldn’t be the easiest path to

take. “I did want, in some capacity, to just write my own songs and play them. So I always tried to do things that would align with that.”

In 2012, at age 19, Weber was one of the youngest people to ever be covered in a major Guitar Player magazine feature.

The prestigious Berklee College of Music also saw his potential, awarding him a summer scholarship when he was just 17.

The school went on to award him a scholarship that would have covered some of his educational expenses, but Weber’s artistic instincts proved too restless and he returned home to Canada to pursue his songcraft. “I wanted to allocate my resources and my attention to just doing my own thing,” he said, admitting it would have been a great opportunity at Berklee just the same.

But he has no regrets – Weber headed home to the west coast and picked up where he left off – performing, writing and planning for a full-length CD. Shadows in the Road is the result of stretches of creative explorations; quite a bit of time went into the formation of the disc, which lends itself to the layered, rich and imaginative sounds that resonate from song to song. “I wanted to write songs that I would like – at the time I really liked ‘big’ songs with big production – those are the kinds of things I was working towards with my writing.

“It was hope that it would be music that I would want to listen to.”

Meanwhile, Weber’s journey is just beginning, and it’s off to a truly inspiring start. He’s relishing the chance to cross the country now, playing for audiences from coast to coast. It’s been a special tour also in that he’s been able to perform plenty of new ma-

terial that will ultimately find its way onto his next CD. He hopes to begin recording that one later this year with a potential release set for next spring.

“The only thing that is really fulfilling is writing songs and playing songs, and being expressive that way. It’s oddly therapeutic in a way, too.” editor@reddeerexpress.com

Belliveau’s selection was made by the board after hearing that their current artistic director Matt Gould would be retiring after 10 years with the organization.

“I am very excited for this new chapter in Tree House’s history. The future is bright. Serge has a lot of experience in theatre arts.

What’s really cool to me, as well, is that he was a kid in the Tree House program years ago. He has come home to roost and spread the fun, connection, growth experiences and character building that Tree House’s drama programs provide,” said Kerwin Rittammer, president of the THYT board.

“I also want to thank Matt profusely for all the time, energy, and passion he brought to the Tree House programs for the last 10 years. I consider him a friend and wish him all the best in the new endeavours and paths his life will take.”

Having gotten his feet wet as the Scarecrow in The Wizard of OZ directed by then AD Richard O’Brien, Belliveau was inspired to pursue stagework.

“WITH THE EXPERIENCES LEARNED FROM THIS COMPANY AND MY YEARS OF TRAINING AND PERFORMANCES, I INTEND TO PASS ON MY GREAT JOY AND PASSION FOR THEATRE.” SERGE BELLIVEAU He attended Red Deer College and performed there as a student in Joseph and His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat as Judah, Billy Bigelow in Carousel, and aptly cast as the Clowne in A Winter’s Tale.

Performing regularly with Prime Stock saw him act locally and across the province professionally. Transplanted to Toronto he received training in im-

provisation which serves him well with his passionate involvement with Bull Skit.

Belliveau has taught, written, directed, and acted in countless performances.

Belliveau said, “First off I would like to thank the board for choosing me as the next artistic director for Tree House. In many ways I ‘got my start’ in theatre through THYT. With the experiences learned from this company and my years of training and performances, I intend to pass on my great joy and passion for theatre.

“I am excited and inspired to be working with the young community of this city, and cannot wait to see what life lessons they have to teach me in return.

I am motivated by Matt Gould’s tenure as artistic director and look forward to see where THYT can grow from here.”

With his farewell show opening next week, Gould said, “I want to thank everyone involved in Tree House Youth Theatre over the past 10 years for their

support and enthusiasm for my work as artistic director. I am confident that my beloved ‘house’ will be kept in good order with our new artistic director, Serge Belliveau.

Tree House has been in operation for 27 years and offers children and youth ages nine to 17 from Central Alberta the opportunity to learn the dramatic arts in a challenging and safe environment.

Handling the pain of shin splints Pain along the front of your lower leg?

You may have shin splints. Here’s what to do about them.

WHEELER Medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS), also known as shin splints, is a relatively common condition for runners, dancers, tennis players and inexperienced athletes. Most often caused by pushing yourself too hard too soon, the pain of shin splints can get so bad you’re no longer able to run or perform, putting a quick end to your season. The key is prevention. If they do set in, it’s important to treat them promptly.

Here’s what you need to know about shin splints.

Your shins are located along the front part of your legs below the knee. The pain, soreness, tenderness and swelling of shin splints can occur either on the outer part of the front of your lower leg (anterior shin splints) or the inner part of the front of your lower leg (medial shin splints).

The pain can affect one or both legs. In the early stages, you’ll just feel the soreness while exercising. But as shin splints worsen and go untreated, you may feel pain continually. Pain is usually more acute in the morning and when you try to flex your foot.

Don’t blame all lower leg pain on shin splints. Stress fractures - small cracks in the bone - cause sharp leg pain that’s usually in a localized area and feels better in the morning after rest. Compartment syndrome can also cause pain, nerve problems and muscle weakness on the outer shins when the muscle swells and creates pressure.

It’s been years since you put on running shoes. One day you decide it’s time to get back in shape and go run a mile.

Don’t be surprised if you develop shin

splints. Athletes who do too much too soon or suddenly intensify their training routine put themselves at risk for shin splints. Other causes include overpronation (flat feet), forgetting to warm-up, wearing old or non-supportive shoes, or running on a slanted surface always in the same direction.

One or more of these factors combine to cause stress on the shinbone, muscle and the connective tissues, leading to inflammation and pain.

Shin splints will not get better if you continue your high impact exercises.

Running or dancing through the pain will only make it worse. While it may be hard to sit on the sidelines, it’s not hard to treat shin splints.

The best thing to do is avoid the activities that cause pain, apply ice to the shins for 15–20 minutes several times a day for two to three days, and take an anti-inflammatory over-the-counter pain medication like Ibuprofen to reduce pain and swelling. Medial shin splints will benefit from gently stretching your Achilles tendon and anterior shin splints will heal faster from gentle calf stretches. After a few days of rest, focus on low-impact activities (swimming or bicycling) to stay in shape until your shin splints heal (usually three to six months).

If you’ve had shin splints before, a physical therapist can help you determine if your shin splits are caused by your running form or the way your foot hits the ground.

Tips to avoid shin splits in the first place include wearing supportive shoes designed to fit your foot type and using shoe inserts to help correct flat arches.

You should also warm up before exercising, stretch afterwards, ease back into exercise after a long hiatus, and include strength training in your workout routine.

Thirteen per cent of runners complain of shin splints. Most cases are due to a premature increase of intensity, duration, or hill training.

Deciding whether or not you need a CT scan?

JONES head injuries in young children has almost doubled in the past 10 years. But the American Academy of Pediatrics says one-third of CT scans done for these injuries are not needed. Experts suggest agreeing to a CT scan only if it happens after a car accident or a fall from a bike when no helmet was worn. Or if there are symptoms such as confusion, weakness, loss of consciousness, hearing or vision.

Today, back pain is one of the most common complaints seen by doctors. It can be so incapacitating that, when it strikes, patients want a speedy diagnosis and quick relief of pain. Thus many patients are sent for either an X-ray or CT scan of the back. But most back pain is due to muscle sprain that normally subsides in a few weeks.

The CT scan rarely helps doctors in deciding how to treat the pain and results in useless radiation. So unless there’s loss of bladder and bowel control, muscle weakness or decreased feeling in the legs, it’s safer to let nature heal the pain.

Suppose the doctor believes abdominal pain is due to appendicitis or a kidney stone. In these cases an ultrasound will usually

marily used to detect soft tissue, muscle, tendon, spinal cord injuries and small lesions in the brain such as multiple sclerosis and tumours.

CT scans are used by emergency room doctors who need a speedy diagnosis. A patient could die from a hemorrhage while having an MRI which takes 45 minutes. A CT scan makes the diagnosis in five minutes.

So they are used for severe

trauma to brain, spinal cord, chest, abdominal and pelvic injuries. And if your body contains metal, a CT scan must be used rather than an MRI. One test to avoid at all costs is a full body scan.

One study reports that for every 1,250 of these scans, one person will die of cancer. Another study claims that 2% of all future cancers are likely to result from CT scans.

To decrease the risk of radiation ask your doctor why a CT scan is needed.

Can ultrasound or an MRI provide the same result?

Could a previous scan of the same area be used to avoid having a new scan?

And remember, if a doctor has invested in his own CT scanner, studies show he will use it more often.

Some doctors recommend CT colonography to detect precancerous polyps in the large bowel, rather than regular colonoscopy where a flexible lighted instrument is inserted into the colon. But this test is less accurate and again exposes patients to radiation.

How many people will die from excessive radiation exposure? Today, more patients get CT scans for a variety of problems. So how can patients decrease the risk of excessive exposure?

‘Consumer Reports on Health’ says the number of CT scans in the U.S. in 1980 was under 3 million.

Now in 2015 it’s 80 million.

Experts claim that about one-third of the scans have little medical value. And the report adds that some doctors and technicians don’t take measures to reduce radiation exposure.

In the past it’s been said that the radiation threat is greatest in children. But some research now suggests that certain radiation induced cancers place adults at risk as well, more than previously realized by doctors.

So when is a CT scan a benefit or a questionable risk? Patients sometimes worry their headaches may be due to a tumour and they request a scan. But most headaches are caused by tension or migraines.

Exposure to radiation would be needed only for an abnormal neurological examination, or if doctors are concerned about a diagnosis. But if this is the case, an MRI is required, not a CT scan. An MRI does not expose you to radiation and is more accurate in diagnosing brain tumors or arterial aneurysms.

High school soccer in full swing across City

BY JENNA SWAN Red Deer Express The Notre Dame Cougars defeated the Innisfail Cyclones 4-0 last Friday evening at the Collicutt Centre.

The mid-season win sets the Cougars up nicely heading into play-offs.

Head coach Humberto Aspillaga said the team is in good shape this season thanks to extensive training but believes the big win last week was due largely to the teamwork shown on the field.

“We were able to work as a team and do what we do in practice,” said Aspillaga following the game. “The most important aspect at the high school level is learning we all need one another and we need to be able to work as a team.

“If we do well it’s a combination of having the proper support from your teammates both on and off the field.”

He added a desire for the ball and the passion to play are all necessary in addition to teamwork in order to win games.

“I work very hard as a coach to help develop players’ roles on the team, but at the same time you have to ensure you’re working together as a team and that’s really what we saw happening at Friday’s game.”

A bit of skill doesn’t hurt either, with the coach adding his team has a number of players who have played high levels of soccer including a player who ran a semi-professional career in Chile, a number of players also heading into their season with the Red Deer Renegades Soccer Club,

It wasn’t skill Aspillaga was looking for at the beginning of the season however, adding their ‘try-out process’ may be a bit different than other schools in their league.

“One of the philosophies we have adopted at Notre

Dame is that we never cut a player from the team - they cut themselves from the team by not showing up to practice.”

With that being said, Aspillaga didn’t make the practices easy, stating the process shows an athlete’s motivation and dedication, starting the season a month prior to their first game

with early morning runs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7 a.m. Aspillaga added not only does it help show a players commitment level, it also helped get the teams’ endurance to a heightened level before the season.

The coached added society benefits from the hard work and dedication stu-

dents learn while playing soccer.

“Kids want to learn and these skills are going to prove beneficial later in life,” he explained.

“The things they learn in the field whether it’s learning to care for a fellow teammate or translating the hard work they do in practice into the work

Red Deer Rampage remain undefeated

“It was really great to watch them step up and produce some goals for us in the offensive end.”

With both players having strong offensive and defensive skills, the coach added he feels comfortable putting them in any situation.

Nineteen-year-old Jayce Grebinski of the Rampage made his seasonal return to the field during the matchup against he Marauders as well, following an injury, with Reykdal adding it was great to see the player return to the field.

“He made an awesome effort of pushing the ball up and had nice transitioning from offense to defense as well as winning loose balls.”

The strong offense seen on Sunday’s game was one Reykdal has been waiting to see all season, stating it’s primarily the team’s defensive push that makes them shine. “I’ve seen our defense be very successful in the past four games, but this game was a little different in that our offense was definitely the stronger point of the game for us and we did see our defense slipping up in that third period.”

The Red Deer Rampage lacrosse team is taking a firm hold on the season with an undefeated record thus far of 5-0-1.

The Tier 1 Junior ‘B’ team took down the Okotoks Marauders with a final score of 11-7 for the Rampage on their home field at the Kinex Arena over the weekend.

A strong offensive push from the Rampage secured an 11-4 lead heading into the third period, with the Rampage defense letting three late goals slip past but it wasn’t enough for the Marauders to take home the win.

With four goals from one of the Rampage’s newer additions, Logan Sinclair, and three goals from Rampage veteran Logan Elliot, the team’s offense was on fire during the match on Sunday afternoon.

Head coach for the Rampage, Dustin Reykdal explained although he was disappointed to see their defense slip up in the third period – to which he attributed to complacency due to the team’s lead – he was beyond thrilled to watch Elliot and Sinclair come into their own.

“It’s what I’ve been expecting and what I knew they’ve been capable of all season so it was great to

down to play-offs, that’s when we need to be able to win games because that’s when it really counts.”

He added he hopes to see the team get their skills in check and develop the younger guys on the team to be able to have the confidence they need on the field.

“They also need to be comfortable playing with one another and these are things I like to see happen early in the season so we can win games later on.”

After the team’s trek to Founder’s Cup last year, Reykdal explained the returning players from last year’s team have done an incredible job of stepping into leadership roles and showing the newer players what it’s going to take to make it to a top level of play again this year.

“Those players know and understand what it takes to play at that higher level and it makes it easier for me as a coach because you

can rely on those players who are stepping up and demonstrating their ability as leaders on the team.”

The Rampage takes to the road this weekend, with games in St. Albert and Edmonton and will return to the Kinex Arena in Red Deer on Friday, June 5th at 9 p.m. as they take on the Sherwood Park Titans and again on Saturday June 6th at 8 p.m. against the Calgary Shamrocks. jswan@reddeerexpress.com

Beauty in the eyes of those with rose coloured glasses I travelled to my old stomping grounds last weekend and spent a few days in Medicine Hat. I haven’t been back there in a few years and it was wonderful to connect with old friends and family. My sister and I made a point of driving through neighbourhoods looking at the houses we grew up in which was a wonderful and nostalgic exercise.

The homes have aged, a few have changed colours and one of them was kind of run down but in my eyes they were all beautiful because of the memories they hold.

There is a drive through burger joint in the Hat which is an independently operated store called Tino’s. They make the most amazing chili fries and they were a staple in my childhood so naturally when I travel there in the summer months I must make a stop at this ridiculous looking building. If you Google search images you will see a white brick building trimmed with

WYSE red and black trying very hard to imitate a tiny castle. Pointed arch windows and bright red brick corner towers adorn this Medicine Hat landmark while a faded sign in the parking lot boasts ‘Where the burger is KING’. Looking at this odd building one might think that a Monty Python crew had left a quirky set design standing while filming one of their epic movies but it is a true and thriving burger and fry business that I think is beautiful.

It is possible for us to have items in our home or in our lives that show beauty to us even though they may be aesthetically

unpleasant to others. Our imprinting of memories upon a building, colour or any object will convince us that it is beautiful.

Only when sitting outside on the picnic table waiting for our order did I see the building up close, noticing that some of the bricks were fallen and that the mortar was crumbling. Up close the building showed its age and may not have been as beautiful but my memories and the delicious aroma wafting out of the tiny service window clouded my judgement and I saw it all as quite beautiful.

It might be a good practice to invite a friend or professional designer into your home if you are considering a refresh of your space. As we live with items, colours and decor elements day to day we can sometimes become blind to its true nature.

Memories and nostalgia may cloud our vision and help us overlook items that may

make our interiors dated. I’m not saying we need to get rid of every piece of memorabilia in our homes but it may be time to store some items - especially if we are craving a fresh update.

We all joke about rose coloured glasses and many of us have sat with friends laughing about an ex partner wondering ‘what we ever saw in them!’ I believe we all have these items and memories in our lives and sometimes it is a good feeling and memory and then sometimes it can just be clutter. If you are searching for a change and a refresh it may be time to take off those glasses and have a candid look at your home. Store or repurpose those items that are no longer working in your space and make room for new items or maybe more room for less items.

TRAVEL After nearly three decades Las Vegas still glitters To say that my recent visit to Las Vegas was an eye-opener after 27 years, is an understatement.

The arrival at the airport gave me the first indication on how much this city has grown over the years.

We grabbed our bags and headed out to get in line for a taxi.

The line-up was very long but it moved quickly and we were on our way to the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.

The Hard Rock was abuzz with having hosted a fight the previous night and further events thereafter. People gathering to see Ludicrous who was having a special pool party that day? It was jawdropping. The Hard Rock were quick to recognize that we were not there for the concert and escorted us to another section of the Casino to check into our hotel.

Even though we had asked for early check in, unfortunately, our room wasn’t ready. We were able to hand our luggage over to the bellman.

We then proceeded to walk down to the strip, which was a beehive of activity with people from all around the world, speaking different languages and enjoying what Las Vegas had to offer.

What to do, what to do? We toured some of the amazing casinos and tried to absorb the sites and sounds of the strip. Wow! So much had changed. Numerous hotels that existed almost three decades ago, were not there! As we traveled down the strip, there were amazing shows that the hotels would put on.

You could spend a few days simply taking in the shows offered along the strip.

With all to see we had to focus on our show we chose to see Criss Angel! The show began at 7 p.m.

His show was amazing and one that I would recommend that you go to see. It is something words will never describe.

HISTORIC – Take a trip down memory lane on Freemont Street in old Las Vegas.

Moving onwards, after having a lovely experience thus far, the next adventure, the Grand Canyon! Back at home the office spoke highly about their clients’ experiences with the Grand Canyon Tour with Pink Jeep Tours.

Rise and shine at 6 a.m. and the day began! The tour company took us to the south side of the canyon which is notably the best section to the see the Grand Canyon from. They went on the famous Route 66 and it was enjoyed by all.

A choice of lunch was provided by the tour company before departing Vegas in the morn-

ing. Bottled water was handed out freely and the tour guide was amazing.

Twelve hours of touring the Canyon was definitely a massive highlight and will be reminisced about for years. It is understood why so many people recommend it!

A trip to Las Vegas is never complete without the trip to Freemont Street. This is the old Vegas and is a must-do. The technology never existed 27 years ago. The largest television in the world? It is recommended that you go closer to the evening to see the light show from the

overhead canopy. The sights are something to see and you really have to see it to believe it. Seeing the World Famous Binions and the four Queens gives you just a little taste of what old Las Vegas was all about. You can purchase a beverage and walk around and of course the choices to eat are endless. There is great little Italian restaurant at the Golden Nugget called Grottos and they had the best tomato basil soup along with some amazing bruschetta which didn’t leave much room for the pizza that we ordered.

Overall, it was nice to leave the busy strip and see what the old

Vegas had to offer. It is different and worth to considering to stay in the area for a few days before moving hotels and spending the remainder of your holiday on the strip.

When they say, ‘You’ll need a vacation after your Vegas vacation’, it’s true.

Once arriving in Las Vegas I quickly realized I should have come more often than averaging a few decades. The memories created out of this quick trip to Las Vegas were incredibly worth it!
