Sareena Nickoli Sareena can’t believe it’s been almost 14 years since she’s been a part of the family furniture business. How small business owners can market their businesses

According to Forbes magazine, more than 50 percent of the working population works for a small business. Many small businesses are homebased and hundreds get started each month.

Despite their prevalence, only a handful of small businesses survive more than 10 years. Small business owners must learn how to properly market their businesses and garner a larger audience to stay afloat.

While there’s no set amount a business should devote to advertising and marketing, such expenses should be included in an organization’s operational budget.

Small business owners just getting started may want to consider the following tips as they attempt to market their businesses and expand their customer base.

• Create an online presence. A survey from online marketing firm Yodle found that only about half of small businesses have websites. Customers routinely go online to learn more about businesses and make purchases. Customers will visit websites to find directions to brick-and-mortar stores, find store hours and/or learn about the products or services offered by a particular firm. Small business owners should establish an online presence and ensure the site is routinely updated and modernized.

• Sponsor local events. For a relatively small investment, small businesses can get their names out to the public by sponsoring community events. When approached by schools and other organizations, lend your help. Donate a basket of goods or a certificate for services for gift auctions. Work with organizations to donate a portion of sales to a charity or school through a specialized fundraiser. Contact a sports league to see if your company name can be printed on uniforms or used on banners around the field. Not only will this get your name out, but it also will establish a positive image of your company.

• Establish yourself as an ‘expert.’ Be accessible to journalists and media outlets who may need quotes or insight when writing articles.

Local papers and circulars can get your name out to the community and bring in new customers. Being quoted in print helps establish a reputation as being an authority in your field.

• Don’t ignore social media. Social media accounts are generally free to set up and require minimal effort to maintain. Social media can help establish and maintain a brand and help you share messages and other content.

She has been a police officer, consultant, lawyer and Splatsin chief but Gloria Morgan’s greatest pride comes from her volunteer work.

And her three-page CV reflects that, with her work and volunteer experience sharing equal space.

“Volunteering connects you to community, to people and to other organizations. It creates a global network around you,” Morgan explained.

With her extensive work history, Morgan could easily develop that network without volunteering but it remains a vital part of who she is as a person.

“Wanting to serve is a big part of it. I get satisfaction that I’m

helping something move forward.”

Morgan grew up with an instinct for injustice that continues to drive her.

She began honing her strong work ethic as a pre-teen working in orchards and adding several jobs to her resume before following through on her childhood dream by becoming an RCMP officer in 1979.

Morgan spent 11 years with the RCMP but began doing undergraduate studies at Fraser Valley College while still in the service, earning a spot on the Dean’s List for two years.

“I went to school because I just needed something to do but the goal became apparent quickly.”

That goal was to become a lawyer, which she accomplished in 1994, being called to the bar the following year.

Her time at UBC law school was not without extra curricular activities. She was part of the First Nations Law Students’ Association, the Law Students Legal Advice Program and First Nations Articling Committee, she produced a two-hour video on native justice, lectured on the Charlottetown Accord, made a presentation on policing natives at the Justice Institute and more.

Morgan’s law career included running her own practice, serving as Crown prosecutor, circuit duty counsel and duty counsel and back to her own practice before her life took another turn.

Nominated for Splatsin chief in 2001, Morgan asked her brother to remove her name from the list but he did not – “just to see what would happen” – and she was elected.

Morgan focused on financial stability for the band, creating opportunities for band members and giving the community a voice during her two terms as chief.

Left looking for work after losing a third election, Morgan once again turned her efforts to First Nations justice.

She worked as a consultant on Aboriginal issues before taking on outreach work around the Indian residential schools settlement as a regional coordinator.

That job morphed into one as an adjudicator, which involves listening to Aboriginals’ residential school experiences and determining if they are eligible for compensation.

“It was a great job but I’m working my way out of it,” she noted. “I have other dreams and goals but I am not sure exactly what they are right now.”

Morgan recently applied to be a provincial court judge but she is unsure if that is the right path

for her now.

She continues to serve on the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Board and the Interior Health Patient Care Review Board, is an avid golfer and enjoys focusing on First Nations issues – work and play she would not be able to

continue as a judge.

One thing is certain, Morgan will not be sitting still and she will be doing something that makes a difference.

“I want to leave the world a better place than when I came in,” she said.

The kitchen is the place to talk about what happened at school, chat with friends or share a midnight snack with someone special.

“The kitchen is the heart of the home and there are so many ways that people can make it be the place that suits their lifestyle and where they love to spend time.

And it doesn’t have to cost a lot,” said Crystal Sturgeon, who is busy putting the finishing touches in the studio/showroom for her new business, CK Design Kitchen and Bath Cabinetry LTD. “When I was younger, I was constantly rearranging my bedroom and painting and papering the walls.

I didn’t like school. I guess I was too artistic. Every teacher told me I was extremely talented if I would apply myself in arts and drama,” said the VSS 1997 grad. She moved to Calgary and started an accounting course with her mother’s encouragement because design did not seem to promise a steady career.

“I dropped out of accounting and got a degree in design from Mount Royal. My mother is proud of me now and she has a fabulous kitchen,” said Sturgeon, who worked in Calgary as a designer for four years, then moved back to Vernon where she fell in love with the city again and with Dave Sturgeon who is now her husband and business partner in CK Design which started in 2005.

“I just couldn’t do this without my amazing husband and my family being there for me. I had a dream of owning my own design store. Here it is. I don’t think I could do it in a big city because there is a more relaxed atmosphere here. I can take my fouryear-old son, Neil, my greatest masterpiece, to a job site if I need to and people are cool with it,” she said.

“I must have more than 100 kitchens in the community now and I love it when I meet people I’ve designed for around town and they tell me how much they enjoy their kitchens. It’s really exciting that people are taking more time to think about kitchens now, how kitchens can be functional and beautiful. There is so much choice, whether it’s a new home or a renovation. And people are paying more attention to bathrooms now as well.”

CK Design helps people make choices by determining family needs and wishes, with abundant samples of materials and display kitchens.

People can also see how their ideas look on 3-D computer programs.

Sturgeon noted that people are getting more adventurous with kitchen design choices and taking a more European approach with colour and mix and match materials. The use of space and utensil and appliance organization and storage is met with ingenious new ideas like slide-out counters.

“Everything can be custom-tailored to your needs. I call it bespoke,

like a suit made just for you. And you can have all the extras without spending a lot. Sometimes all it takes to make the change you want is something small, a change of hardware, a colour or an accessory,” said Sturgeon.

“Botox is not just for your face. A little injection of something new can smooth out your kitchen, too.”

She’s excited showing off the showroom where one kitchen display will be dedicated to baking cookies and pies to serve when customers drop in for coffee and a chat, or just to get some new ideas.

CK Design is involved with a company that plants trees around the province on behalf of businesses.

Since each kitchen uses approximately two trees, these are now being replanted annually. The business uses only environmentally friendly products with most materials Canadian of British Columbia made. The showroom will soon have a line of accessories, some designed and made in Vancouver.

“I wake up every day and feel I’m blessed to work where my passion is.

I don’t feel I’ve really worked a day in my life because I love it all so much.

This is my playground. I have six wonderful employees and each one of them is creative and dedicated and loves their job.”

Sturgeon’s passion and creativity won a Tommie Award from the Canadian Homebuilders’ Association in 2014.

6 . When an employee or contractor is terminated or indicates that they are leaving, deactivate their email accounts. Abandoned email accounts could be exploited by cyber criminals.

Melanie King’s recipe to business success is one she has refined over the years.

Being successful for King has involved a little luck, some tough choices, considerable hard work and a lot of love for that work.

“Do something that you really love with people you really love and it’s never work,” said the owner/ operator of Mel’s Pizza in downtown Enderby.

Pizza sauce seems to run in King’s blood. She started as a phone girl at Frieda’s Pizza in Quesnel at the age of 14 and stayed for 10 years before opening her own Italian restaurant.

A failed marriage led to a failed business and a move to Fort McMurray, where she earned her real estate licence.

She continued in real estate when she moved to Enderby with her son James in 2005 but an enticing offer on a local pizza place led her back to the restaurant business in 2007.

King bought the place and became her own boss within a week.

Enlisting her son’s help, she opened up and, flying by the seat of her pants, slowly built up a customer base.

A trip to Pizza Expo 2008 and a

Dough Doctor workshop improved her product while some free and bargain priced pizzas for a ladies’ ball tournament sealed her presence in the community.

“What better way to get your business known than through the moms? It was the cheapest and most effective advertising I ever did.”

The business took off again when King bought a building up the street and opened a new place under her own name in 2011. She works 12-14 hour days but she thoroughly loves cooking for people and she has built up a dedicated staff of six. In February, her business earned the Best Workplace Award from Small Business BC. King said entrepreneurs must have a tough skin while still being responsive to customers’ concerns.

“I take things personally but I don’t let it drive me,” she noted. “I run my business, my business does not run me”. She has great pride in her product, always tweaking the menu – adding and subtracting as needed. A recent trip to Pizza Expo (which allowed her to renovate during a short closure) has her exploring gourmet pizza options.

She is a true believer in shopping local because it benefits the local economy is so many ways.

Too much volunteer work was leading to burnout and King knew she had to cut back; she now limits herself to donating her product.

Business is rising like her pizza dough – 400 per cent since 2007 – and King sees Mel’s Pizza as an Enderby fixture for many years to come. “(Long-time employee) Brittany (Neville) and James get it in my will,” she said.

But preparing for a professional career begins long before men and women send out their first resumes. The following are a few steps first-time job seekers can take to ensure their transition from student to professional goes as smoothly as possible.

• Clean up your online presence.

College is a carefree time for many students, but those fun times should not come to define your online presence. When preparing to enter the workforce, scrub your social media presence clean of anything that does not present you in a mature and positive light. Fair or unfair, photos from nights out on the town in college can damage your reputation and prevent hiring managers from considering your resume. Clean social media profiles of any information, be it photos, blog postings or musings on Twitter, that may leave companies questioning your judgment and maturity level, and think twice before posting any such information in the future.

• Clean up your physical presence.

Shoulder-length hair and a scruffy beard might have projected your desired image on campus, but such an image will rarely score you points in the business world. First impressions go a long way, and appearance can make or break a first impression. Even if a more conservative look is not your personal style, it’s the style many companies prefer. Men should project a polished look, including a nice suit, while women should wear appropriate office attire and avoid going overboard with makeup and jewelry.

• Do your homework.

Just because college has ended doesn’t mean first-time job seekers no longer have homework. Research the industry you want to work in, staying abreast of the latest developments and predictions as to where the industry is going and which companies figure to be leading the industry in the coming years.

Research also should involve learning about companies you want to work for, and that research should be kicked into overdrive if

A taste of Mexico CARA BRADY The Morning Star

One of the pleasures of travelling is recreating favourite food at home.

While that can be difficult, those who like it hot can find authentic Mexican ingredients at El Gusto Latino Market in Vernon.

Fanny Chapman, who started the business in 2013, grew up helping cook in her family’s restaurant in Acapulco.

“My father is a Swiss Canadian who came to Mexico on holidays and met and married my mother and stayed to start a business. He combined European dishes for European tourists with Mexican food and we’d have things like wiener schnitzel with salsa, and of course, tamales, enchiladas, tacos and ceviche,” she said.

In 1993, another Canadian, Steve Chapman, was on holidays in Mexico and found a lovely Mexican bride.

“History repeated but this time it took me away,” said Chapman.

Away was to Dease Lake in northern B.C., where her husband worked for BC Hydro.

“It was a very big change and a big challenge, beautiful and interesting. My dad told me that was the real Canada,” said Chapman, who was busy learning English and working as a cashier. Work took the couple around the province and they moved to Vernon in 2010.

“I said, ‘We’re staying here.’ I had

wanted to open a store for the longest time but we were always moving,” said Chapman.

She opened El Gusto Latino Market and found her customers in Mexican seasonal workers who wanted home food and Canadians who wanted what they had eaten in Mexico. Some of her products are imported directly from Mexico while others, like tortillas and cheese, are from Lower Mainland suppliers so they are fresh. Chapman does whatever it takes to get her products on the shelves. Products are often delivered to her but she has been known to drive a round trip to the Coast in one day to get what she needs.

The store is stocked with ingredients to cook Mexican from scratch — queso Oaxaca, chorizo, epazote, nopalitas, cane sugar, corn husks for tamales, and sauces like mole, habanero and the popular valentina sauce which is used on everything in Mexico. There is a whole rack of every kind of dried pepper, with something for all tastes.

The Mexican workers especially like the Sangria Señorial, a soft drink made with sugar cane, and the Mexican Coke in a bottle. The spice Mexican candy is also popular.

And then there’s the Mexican chocolate. Chapman’s Ibarra hot chocolate was voted the best in the Hot Chocolate competition that was part of the Downtown Vernon holiday celebrations last November.

The 2015 National Image Salon of the Professional Photographers of Canada was exhibited recently during the Canadian Imaging Conference, the annual conference of the PPOC in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

Brenda Hala MPA F/PPOC-BC, a professional photographer from Vernon had 3 images accepted and exhibited in the National Image Salon, judged prior to the conference by a panel of master photographers from across Canada.

Acceptance into the salon is an indication of the makers’ ability to produce outstanding images for their clientele. It also earns the maker merits toward several designations offered to PPOC mem-

bers, including the prestigious Craftsman of Photographic Arts and Master of Photographic Arts.

The competition features entries from across Canada in twenty-one different classes, including press, portrait, architecture and fashion.

Kent Wong, Chair of the National Exhibition Committee, said: “We were thrilled to see so many inspiring entries in the competition this year. The salon images clearly demonstrate the exceptional skill and quality that professionals bring to the medium of photography.”

Time management tips for working moms

T

he responsibility of raising a family while maintaining a career is never easy. Working moms often wish there were more time in the day to spend with their families or get more done at the office. While there’s no way women can add a 25th hour to their days, there are ways to manage your time more effectively so you can get around to doing those things you never seem to have the time to do.

• Get a head start. Perhaps no time of day is more hectic for a working mother than the morning, when she must get ready for work while getting the kids ready for school and ensuring they have a good breakfast. Some moms even drop their youngsters off at school. That’s a lot of tasks to tackle before you even sit down in your office to answer the first e-mail or listen to the morning’s first voicemail. To make mornings less frantic, get a head start the night before by laying out the next day’s clothes for you and encouraging your kids to do the same. Preparing lunches, packing a gym bag and even setting the coffee maker can all be done the night before to save you time and make mornings more relaxing.

• Take public transportation to work. Public transportation may not be available to all working mothers, but those with access to a train, subway or bus might want to take advantage of that opportunity. If you do, you can spend your daily commute catching up with work instead of sitting in traffic behind the wheel of your car. Even if public transportation takes a little more time to get you to work than driving yourself, that extra time can be spent preparing for the day ahead.

• Catch up on work over the weekend. The weekends are a time when many working mothers look to unwind, but spending an hour or two catching up on work on a Saturday or Sunday morning is a great way to make the week a little less hectic.

As the week progresses toward the weekend, set aside certain tasks that aren’t urgent but can be easily addressed in an hour or so over the weekend. This frees up time during the week to tackle larger projects and might even allow you to leave your office earlier on weekdays.

• Prepare or even cook meals in advance. The

days of yore when mom cooked all the meals are largely a thing of the past, as nowadays both parents tend to share cooking duties.

But while corporations or larger organizations might be able to stretch their budgets when necessary, small businesses often don’t have the luxury of such leeway.

Because small businesses are often less financially flexible than their larger competitors and counterparts, small business owners tend to agonize over their budgets when starting out. Part of that struggle may stem from small business owners who specialize in their trade but have little experience at running a business. But determining a small business budget is essential to a business’ success, as it helps owners determine if they have enough money to fund the business and its potential expansion while also providing owners with a steady income.

Each industry is different, and budgets that work for one business will not necessarily work for another.

But the following tips can help business owners develop an effective budget for their businesses regardless of their industries.

UNDERSTAND YOUR INDUSTRY Understanding your industry and knowing your product are two

different things. When establishing a budget for a new business, small business owners should familiarize themselves with the industry they will be joining. Calculate the cost of machinery and materials. The prices of materials can fluctuate depending on supply and demand, but small business owners developing a budget can research how such costs fluctuated in the past or speak with current business owners to determine how much of their initial cash supply and future revenue will need to be allocated to production costs.

Another thing to learn about the industry is if there are certain trends that may dictate your revenue stream. For example, a surf shop likely won’t bring in as much revenue in the winter as it will in the summertime. Such trends are not exclusive to seasonal businesses, and business owners need to take them into consideration when developing a budget for their businesses. Doing so will help you stay afloat during those times of year when your industry traditionally struggles. If you fail to do so, you may be forced to lay off workers, close your doors or both.

Developing a budget for a startup can be tricky, as it’s hard to know how to allocate your revenue when you don’t know how much revenue your business is going to generate. But that doesn’t mean you can’t allocate that yet-to-be-earned revenue. In fact, doing just that is entirely necessary. Determining your operating costs, which include cost of materials, labor, the rent or mortgage on the property where your business is housed and taxes among other expenses, helps you know how much revenue you’ll need to generate to make the business work. Knowing the percentage of revenue that needs to go toward your operating costs can help you develop a realistic budget that gets you through the first few months when it’s hard to determine just how much revenue the business is likely to generate.* Give yourself some breathing room. When developing a budget for your small business, it’s important to build some breathing room into that budget. This can provide some leeway should your estimated revenue fall short of your actual revenue or your business takes off and you suddenly find yourself

in need of money in order to meet customer demand and/or expand the business and its staff. In addition, factoring in some breathing room will come in handy should costs beyond your control, such as rent or the cost of materials, suddenly rise.

DEVELOP A SECONDARY EMERGENCY BUDGET Figures regarding the survival rates of new small businesses vary significantly. Conventional wisdom has long suggested such businesses fail far more often than they succeed, and many go up in flames rather quickly.

However, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, roughly half of all new businesses survive five years or more, and about one-third survive a decade or more. But surviving five years is not necessarily a 50-50 proposition, as small business owners who plan ahead for emergencies are likely in better positions to make it to 10 years than those that don’t. When developing a secondary emergency budget, include cost-cutting measures, which can make it easier to make tough decisions if money becomes tight but bills still need to be paid.

Balancing work and family is a juggling act faced by many working parents. Responsibilities to work and family often overlap, and that can make solving the riddle of balancing work and family that much more difficult.

Single-income households have decreased dramatically over the last several decades, as escalating costs of living have made it difficult for many families to get by on just one income. But working parents can employ several strategies, both at the office and at home, as they attempt to make the job of juggling commitments to work and family a little less difficult.

AROUND THE OFFICE

A major concern many parents have as they attempt to balance work and family is that they are not spending enough time at home with their children or not paying enough attention to their kids or even their spouses when they are home. One way to find more time at home is to inquire about the possibility of working remotely.

Advancements in technology that have made it easier to remotely communicate with clients and coworkers has led to an influx of workfrom-home employees. While working from home does not mean workloads will diminish, it does save men and women the time they would spend commuting to and from work, and that translates to more time at home with the family. If working remotely full-time is not a possibility, men and women can ask if it’s possible to do so one or two days a week, as such a schedule will still provide more time at home.

Another avenue men and women can explore as they attempt to achieve a better balance between work and family concerns how efficiently they do their jobs. Business owners may improve that morale by helping employees hone their skills, be it paying for coursework that allows them to improve existing skills or sending them to seminars where they can learn more about their field. Such efforts are relatively inexpensive investments for employers, but they show employees that their companies are willing to invest in them. Such gestures can improve morale and productivity.

* Set targets and follow up on them

A sleepy office environment or low employee morale are not always behind lower productivity. In some instances, employees simply need to have goals set for them in order to improve their productivity. Goals should be realistic but not too simple to achieve, as poorly set goals can give employees the wrong impression. When tasked with meeting easy targets, some employees may think their employer does not have much confidence in their abilities, while others may embrace easy goals and use them as an excuse to be unproductive. So while goals should be realistic, they also should inspire employees to do their best. Once targets have been established, don’t forget to follow up and ensure progress is being made. Setting targets but failing to follow up on employee progress can produce an environment in which employees feel as though their efforts are not valued.

Determining why productivity is sagging is not always so easy. But many times employees themselves are a business’ best resource with regard to identifying why things have taken a turn for the worse. Business owners can create an environment in which employees know their input is valued. If necessary, instruct department managers to conduct monthly meetings with staff to address issues such as work flow, teamwork and responsibility. During these meetings, which can be valuable during periods of low or even exceptional productivity, managers can solicit suggestions from employees about improving productivity and efficiency.

What to expect in technology this year As technology continues to evolve, devices are being used in ways that might have seemed impossible as recently as a couple of years ago.

Cloud computing involves large groups of remote servers networked together to allow centralized data storage. How to avoid distractions when working from home

Telecommuting has made great strides over the last decade. As more people work from home, more people need to find ways to be productive outside of the office environment. That productivity may hinge on avoiding distractions.

Many people telecommute in an attempt to make their lives

easier and more affordable.

Working from home carries with it a number of benefits, but also quite a few challenges. Some people who work from home find it more difficult to separate work life from home life, and distractions in the latter can sabotage the former. Recognizing your biggest distractions

and remedying them can lead to more productivity and better job performance.

Children One of the more popular reasons employees work from home is to be more available for child care. Telecommuting gives working parents a schedule that is flexible enough to meet work deadlines while also being able to pick the kids up from school or to attend school-related functions and extracurricular activities.

Telecommuting also allows new mothers to nurse longer or stay home with infants for a longer period of time.

However, the same reasons people work from home also can prove to be the biggest distractions. Imagine being several paragraphs into a report when the baby wakes up from a nap and demands to be fed. Conference calls can be disrupted by a child who needs homework help or a toddler who needs the

channel changed on the television. Some trial and error may be required to develop a system in which you can work effectively and be able to pull away to handle child-related issues.

Social media Social media connects people to the world around them. Smartphones and tablets enable people to check their email, update their status and tweet messages at a moment’s notice. Working from home affords unrestricted access to social media sites and other forms of communication that may not be so readily accessible in a traditional working environment. It can be tempting for you to constantly click over to Instagram or LinkedIn during the day. However, telecommuters should set specific times of the day when they use social media and restrict usage to only these times. This way they can more fully immerse themselves in work.

Phone calls or texts answered at all hours of the day can be distracting. Working from home does not give friends or family unlimited access to you, so discourage unexpected visits or phone calls. Others should understand that they must respect your work hours, whether those hours are being spent at home or in an office.

Dedicated workspace It can be difficult to take telecommuting seriously if your work area is a folding table and a laptop stuck in the corner of the living room. Others in the household may infringe on your workspace, and daily life can produce many distractions. It is best to have an area specifically dedicated to work, and this area should be closed off to others who won’t need you during the day (children should be able to reach you in case of emergency). Your work desk shouldn’t be a place that the children do their homework.

Try to set up your desk in an area that doesn’t get much foot traffic or inspire you to daydream. If you are close to a tele-

vision or facing an open window, you may spend too many hours gazing aimlessly instead of focused on the tasks at hand. Very often you can be your own worst enemy when it comes to distractions. Buckling down and paying attention requires effort.

Know your limits Taking breaks from time to time can quell boredom and refresh your level of concentration.

Periodically step away from your desk to grab a snack or drink, just like you would at the office.

Go outdoors for a few minutes and breathe some fresh air. These tactics can keep your head clear.

Resolve problems before logging on Attempt to handle any concerns or tasks related to your personal life before you start your work for the day. Otherwise, you may be focused on tackling one problem when your mind should be on something else.

While home and work issues will inevitably cross paths, do not use work hours to pay bills, schedule medical appointments or run house errands.

Reducing distractions is a key to telecommuting successfully. As more companies recognize the benefits of allowing employees to work from home, workers should step up to the challenge with dedication and focus.

She moved on to a Women’s and Children’s Department Store on Granville street as Marketing Manager and drew all the Fashion Illustrations plus wrote the ad copy for this store as well as ‘free-lancing’ as illustrator for fourteen other fashion houses. Patricia taught the first “Fashion Illustration” courses for the Vancouver School of Art offered in that city. She was then hired by Pacific Press to work in the Art Department of the Vancouver Sun, then an ad to teach Art in the small Native community of Bella Bella (Waglisla) called to her and she and her husband moved north.

For the past twenty years she has served as primary judge for the Vernon District Art Scholarships. These scholarships are awarded to the top graduating grade twelve Art Students of the North Okanagan.

Patricia’s paintings are in corporate and private collections in the United Kingdom, Australia, Hong Kong, the U.S.A. Japan, South America, Mexico and Canada. Her works have been published by the prestigious San Diego watercolour Society, for their annual International Shows.

Patricia is collaborating with Eclectic Med and Lent, Fraser and Wall for an Artist’s Retrospective show in October.

Corinne Jeppesen Corinne moved to Armstrong with her parents in 1979 and picked asparagus as a teenager on weekends and after school.

Now 36 years later she is growing asparagus (across the road from where she grew up) with her husband Mark.

The spending habits of women

W

omen and men are different in many ways, but they do share some similarities, especially when it comes to their respective spending habits. Perception and reality do not necessarily equate when examining the spending habits of women.

Several different organizations took a closer look at what women choose to purchase, and the results may just surprise you.

According to Mortgage Choice, women spend more on socializing than on fashion and beauty products. In addition, women spend roughly the same amount on socializing as men do (37.7 percent for women versus 36.2 percent for men). Men and women seem to spend similarly on entertainment as well. Having fun and enjoying time out with friends seems to be a big source of spending regardless of gender.

According to KBK Wealth Connection, a company dedicated to empowering women and the financial services professionals who serve them, women tend to spend money regularly on smaller purchases while men prefer to buy big-ticket items on

Data compiled by the coupon service 8Coupons.com says women can take up to 40 percent longer than men as they mull over their decisions and try to find a better price elsewhere.

How to take back your downtime M

any working professionals have hectic schedules. Perhaps due to technology that now allows men and women to stay connected to the office no matter where they might be, a great number of men and women now exceed the traditional full-time employment standard of 40 hours per week. In fact, data from the 2013 and 2014 Gallup Work and Education polls indicates that adults employed full time work an average of 47 hours per week, almost an entire extra workday.

Some working professionals have little recourse with regard to reducing the number of hours they work each week. But those who find themselves unknowingly working extra hours, whether it’s by checking work emails at home or answering business calls even after leaving the office, can take steps to regain their downtime for themselves.

Men and women who want to take back their downtime may benefit if they start to schedule activities during those hours that aren’t meant to be spent at the office. Rather than planning on going to the gym, plans that can easily fall apart if a particularly difficult project lands on your desk, schedule sessions with a physical trainer or sign up for classes with a friend or family member. You will be less likely to work during your downtime if you have already paid for a training session or class or have scheduled a dinner date or another activity with a loved one. Especially busy professionals can plan activities for one or two weeknights per week so they know they are leaving the office on time no less than 20 percent of the time.

One way to ensure you get out of the office on time is to promote team-building activities with your coworkers. Propose a company softball team or encourage your bosses to sponsor a company bowling team. Such activities can create stronger bonds between you and your coworkers, and they also ensure all of you get out of the office on time at least once per week. While you won’t necessarily avoid talking about work, you will be out of the office and having fun while you relax rather than sitting at your desk and burning the midnight oil.

Working professionals looking to spend less of their downtime working can avoid checking work emails after leaving their offices for the day.

• Turn off your devices

Professionals who own smartphones or tablets can now check work emails or monitor work projects whether they’re sitting in their offices or lounging on the couch at home with their families. Bringing lunch to work puts you in greater control over the foods you are eating. You can pack a healthy and diverse selection of foods. Don’t forget to also bring some snacks that offer a healthy mix of protein and carbohydrates to keep your energy levels up. Otherwise, you may succumb to the temptation of the lunchroom snack machine.• Take frequent breaks. Stale air inside an office environment can make you feel fatigued and less productive.

Also, spending too much time behind your desk may contribute to feelings of stress and tension. Use every opportunity possible to get up and leave your office. Keep your desk drawer stocked with some alcohol swabs or disinfecting spray and routinely clean your keyboard, mouse, touchscreen, and desk surfaces. You also can wipe off door handles and knobs around the office if you want to be proactive.

Close your eyes and look away from the computer monitor every 20 minutes. Focusing on objects of varying distances can help keep the eyes strong and reduce fatigue.

Industry Outlook 2015 As much of the world slowly recovers from the far-reaching economic downturn that began in 2008, the International Monetary Fund has predicted a 3.2 percent growth for the global economy in 2015.

Some countries have already witnessed an uptick in industrial growth. But other nations are not seeing the same level of success.

Slow growth and inflation is plaguing areas of South America. Trade surpluses in Germany are likely to shrink in 2015. There is still steady growth in areas of Asia, but China’s projected 7.1 percent growth, though high compared to other nations, is the country’s lowest in 15 years.

With regard to the economy, job growth and more qualified people returning to the marketplace continue to benefit the economy.

But certain industries have emerged as the safest bets for employment possibilities and success in 2015. A recent survey from researchers at Michigan State University found certain job sectors anticipate strong hiring growth

Growth in information services, which includes telecommunications, publishing, motion pictures, and broadcasting, is expected to surge. Finance and insurance remain strong and safe bets for employment as banks now will make up for cutbacks during the recession. Other strong employment contenders include management consulting, accounting, law, computer design, and engineering services.

Health and wellness services appear recession-proof as well. IBISWorld Industry Research notes pilates and yoga studios were highly resistant to the recession. With a predicted annual growth of 4.8 percent, these health and wellness industries are targeted for growth and increased success in 2015.

Pieces of the global economic puzzle are coming together while others are falling out of the mix, and it should be interesting to see how the world economy reacts in the new year.

Erma takes great pride in her accounting role with the Vernon Toyota group of companies since 2007. She has owned a Toyota since she was 19 and loves the product and her Toyota ‘family’.

When not working, Erma and her husband enjoy travelling, fishing, dancing and spending time with her two grown sons.

Amber has been part of the Vernon Toyota team for the past 12 years.

Kami comes from an auto industry family and has worked in almost every department of a car dealership.
