No weapon was ever found and no complaints came to the RCMP about noise that day, the jury has heard.

Closeleigh Manor’s air deemed safe by report

An air quality report presented to Closeleigh Manor residents last month concludes that the air in the 32-unit housing facility is clean and safe.

The study follows complaints in September by a tenant who expressed concerns about the air quality in the building.

Highway widening plans too car-centric: city, cyclists News Reporter

T

he Yukon government’s plan to widen the Alaska Highway to four lanes through much of Whitehorse is out of sync with the city’s transportation goals, says Mayor Dan Curtis.

“We just don’t want it to have that flavour, that it’s more of a freeway,” he said on the phone Tuesday.

Making the highway wider and faster through the city is “not necessarily a good thing for us, we feel.”

The city would like to see the city’s growing transportation needs accommodated with more attention to walking, bicycling, transit and carpooling, rather than simply increasing highway vehicle capacity, he said.

Whitehorse’s transit demand management plan aims to see 50 per cent of Whitehorse residents commuting by methods other than private car in the next 25 years.

A fancy new highway that’s designed primarily to speed up vehicle traffic could undermine that goal.

Indeed, the design criteria that the consultants looked at mostly had to do with reducing vehicle collisions and easing the way for vehicles to move through the corridor.

The plan does allow for the construction of a multi-use trail through the corridor, but many details have yet to be worked out.

For example, the current mock-ups show the multi-use trail going right through the Airport Chalet building.

Highways and Public Works has confirmed that there is no plan to move that building.

They’ve yet to determine how the trail will be adjusted.

The Whitehorse Urban Cycling Coalition has also voiced its opposition to various parts of the design.

The current proposal is to have 80 kilometre per hour speed limits through the whole corridor, except between Hillcrest and Two Mile Hill, where the limit would be lower.

The cycling coalition has suggested a limit of 60 kilometres per hour from Robert Service Way through Crestview.

The city is also concerned about the proposed speed increases through Whitehorse, said Curtis. Increased speed can dramatically increase fatal collisions.

But he’s optimistic that the Yukon government will work towards a plan that works for the city, he said.

“The minister has met with council, and he’s given us assurances that changes will occur following the consultation period.”

“I’m very, very optimistic that our administrations can work together and find a really good compromise.”

The public consultation period for the plan closed on Friday.

Alicia Debreceni, spokesperson for Highways and Public Works, said that consultants are currently working to compile the responses into a “what we heard” document, and the government will not make any decisions on how to proceed before it has seen the results.

Consultants have to date received 283 hard copy responses, 222 online responses and 30 email responses. They conducted 40 in-person meetings with affected groups and residents, and 175 residents visited public open houses.

The energy board will likely hear the proposal later this year.

“The fact that the producers actually asked for an exemption in Canadian waters to not have to drill the relief well in the same year is really scary,” said Bagnell.

“Can you imagine oil pouring out into the Arctic Ocean pouring out all season, waiting for them until next season to drill a relief well?”

The Arctic Council could have a role in taking on the issue of coordinating between Arctic nations to better understand the implications of a potential oil spill and figure out what’s safe enough, said Bagnell.

But in the end, perhaps it would be best for the oil to stay in the ground, he said.

“Because of global warming, and the cuts that need to be made to carbon production, there’s no necessity to drilling in unsafe places.

“Why would you threaten a pristine environment with new production?”

Four wildfires caused by reckless burning Pierre Chauvin News Reporter

C

arelessness caused four forest fires over the Victoria Day weekend, prompting fears for the rest of the summer as high temperatures are forecasted for the next weeks. “Don’t abandon (your campfire), that’s the number one reason behind human-caused starts,� said George Maratos, spokesperson for Yukon Wildland Fire Management.

Three of the fires were in the Whitehorse area – in Tagish, Lake Laberge and Fox Lake – while the fourth was near Haines Junction.

The quick reactions by nearby residents to all four fires allowed firefighters to easily contain them.

On Tuesday, only the Fox Lake and Haines Junction fires were still active but fully contained.

In Tagish, the fire was caused by five small bonfires that were abandoned. “They weren’t even attempted to be put out properly,� said Maratos. “That’s very, very serious; thankfully they were able to get the helicopter with the bucket of water on it.�

Careless burning, on top of threatening local communities, takes up crucial resources at a time where the territory is under extremely dry conditions, said Maratos.

Eleven firefighters and one helicopter are still working to extinguish a fire near the Klondike Highway north of Dawson City that started last week.

On Tuesday, firefighters had contained the fire to 37.5 hectares. “At one point (during the weekend) there were some hot spots that had crossed the highway, but (firefighters) were quick to contain it,� said Maratos.

fighters to British Columbia, the Northwest Territories and Alaska to help fight a particularly tough fire season under a resource sharing program. This year, the Yukon might be the one calling for help.

Most of the territory is under “phenomenal fire conditions,� according to Maratos. Except for Old Crow, the rest of the territory is under either extreme or high fire danger.

It’s a stark contrast with last year’s fire season, the quietest on record, that saw little to no lightning activity and no record-high temperature.

“It’s gonna be a much different year than it was last year and we’re only in the third week of May,� said Maratos.

While at this time last year there had been five fires burning 0.9 hectares, seven fires have burned 38.6 hectares so far this year.

As about half of each year’s fires are caused by humans and are preventable, residents are asked to be cautious.

Campfires should only be lit at designated fire pits or surrounded by rocks, and they should always be kept at a manageable size, said Maratos.

But more importantly, always make sure to fully extinguish a fire before walking away from it. “It should be to a point where you can actually put your hand where the fire was,� he said.

Campfires are banned within Whitehorse city limits, and backyard burning requires a burning permit. However, those permits are suspended when fire danger ratings are above the low level, as is the case with nearly the entire territory now.

OPINION The wealth we give away Lewis Rifkind

T

he current premier of the Yukon is fond of saying that the Yukon has beauty both above ground and beneath it.

The below-ground beauty is, one assumes, all the mineral deposits the Yukon has been blessed with.

There are precious metals such as gold and silver. There are base metals such as zinc, copper and lead.

All of these minerals belong to all Yukoners, unless they are located on First Nation Class A land, in which case they belong to that particular First Nation.

As the reader might be aware, large-scale industrial mining has been around in the territory for well over a century, and getting minerals out of the ground has become part of the Yukon mystique. One just has to look at a vehicle licence plate, with the image of the old-style prospector, to see this reflected.

As romantic as this image of yesteryear is, the individuals and companies who do this activity can’t just pocket the shiny rocks; they face an important reality.

The minerals do not belong to the company or individual who extracts them from the ground until a royalty is paid to the owner of the mineral, be it the Yukon government or a First Nation’s government.

The concept is that since the mineral is a non-renewable resource and will not grow back, ever, the owners of the mineral deserve some financial compensation for a resource that is permanently removed from the land.

One would think that with over a century of large-scale

mineral extraction and associated royalty payments the Yukon would be wealthy beyond belief.

Since 1898, it is estimated that roughly 20 million ounces of placer gold have been recovered from the Klondike placer mining district alone. In today’s prices that’s about $24 billion.

The Keno region is estimated to have produced from 1913 to 1990 214 million ounces of silver, 322,698 tonnes of lead and 198,141 tonnes of zinc. The silver alone at today’s prices is worth $3.4 billion.

The Faro mine produced over 2.3 million tonnes of zinc, 1 million tonnes of lead and 63.5 million ounces of silver. At today’s prices the zinc would be worth about $5 billion.

Imagine if a decent royalty had been obtained from this wealth over the years and put aside for the wellbeing of future Yukoners.

Instead, this huge amount of wealth has been extracted, forever, and by any standard the Yukon is dirt poor.

The most recent territorial budget was $1.3 billion, of which $1 billion came from Ottawa in the form of the annual transfer payments, federal transfers and recoveries.

Why do we receive huge amounts of southern taxpayer dollars? The answer is because the mineral royalties the Yukon gets are a joke.

The royalty on gold is computed at the rate of 2.5 per cent, but gold is always assumed to be worth $15 per ounce. That’s right. The value of gold for the purposes of calculating the Yukon royalty is stuck at an absurd value from over a hundred years ago.

This means that placer gold royalties are 37.5 cents an ounce on gold that is worth around $1,200 an ounce.

In 2013 about $69.4 million worth of placer gold was extracted and the Yukon received just under $18,000 in royalties.

Hardrock mining is even worse. The only operating hard rock mine in the Yukon, the Minto mine, is on Selkirk First Nation Class A land.

They get all the royalties from this mine. In 2013 it was $215,773.

But at least the Minto mine operators paid a royalty.

The Wolverine mine, currently under creditor protection, has debts of $647 million, was operating for three years, and didn’t pay a cent in royalties to the Yukon government.

There is beauty in those mineral deposits, as well as wealth. It’s time to recognize that Yukoners deserve some of that wealth and we must stop giving it away.

Granted the circumstances are different – the federal Conservatives are not the Alberta PCs – but the Alberta election shows that many (what we thought were) hardline conservative voters have a breaking point. Clearly ideology is not the be-all and end-all of politics.

The Alberta election showed that if there is to be an alternative to a tired conservative government for Albertans it is not going to be the Liberals. We all knew that the Liberal brand was damaged goods in Alberta, but this outcome brings the extent of that into sharp focus.

In an ideological consistent world such a wild swing – where voters pass over a more moderate alternative – makes no sense.

Such a change of heart is enough to make Dennis Fentie blush.

But it can be explained by that province’s visceral hatred of the Liberal Party. The fact that the province wasn’t willing to consider the Liberals as a more business-friendly alternative shows that it isn’t just on life support. It is dead and buried.

Progressive opposition to the Harper government in this country is palpable. There are a lot of voters who just want the Conservatives gone. While there

Terrorism isn’t classy Open letter to Green Party Leader Elizabeth May: Your “address” at the recent press dinner was not your finest hour, a pity given that you have performed your duties and responsibilities as an MP admirably, respectfully and honourably to this point.

Why you did not show the same character on this occasion probably stunned and shocked almost everyone – supporters and detractors alike. Is that what you are really like away from the decorum and discipline of Parliament?

Your closing outburst at the press conference particularly defied my understanding. You said, “Omar Kadr has more class than the whole Conservative cabinet.”

Really? Perhaps you may want to reconsider your words given that you showed no class at all, yet surprisingly, Tony Clement, a cabinet minister, and the other MPs CBC interviewed for The National showed a great deal of class and forbearance by refusing to criticize you when asked for their opinion of your speech.

As for your support for Omar Kadr, perhaps a certain compassion is warranted given his age and his circumstances of having been raised by Canada’s first family of terror, but give me a break – you really think Omar Kadr has class? No way! Even at 15, Omar knew very well what he was doing was wrong and evil, but he did it anyway.

He willingly joined and supported the Taliban terrorists in their campaign of rape, murder, hacking off of limbs, throwing acid in the faces of young girls who dared to go to school, planting improvised explosive devices which killed civilians and soldiers alike. And yes, he may also have participated in some of the actions which killed Canadian soldiers in addition to the American soldiers he killed and wounded for which he went to Guantanamo.

Omar has not apologized for any of it nor renounced those he once ran with and their warped ideology. Now he is out on bail and he is still trying to sue Canada for $20 million because we

supposedly mistreated him? If he is truly sorry and reformed, let him say so and let him drop his suit. If and when he does, perhaps in showing remorse he may also be said to have shown “class.”

Until then, he has none.

Your inference that the members of the cabinet, which is being rightly diligent in its responsibility for ensuing public safety and rightly concerned that Omar may not be such a “class act” as you deem him to be, are somehow of lesser character than Omar is outrageous. Your comment was also highly disrespectful of our veterans and their families and their sacrifices in Afghanistan.

Perhaps your ill-considered speech was but a temporary lapse of judgement. Let us hope so.

Yukon Party shares blame for today’s recession In his May 6 column, Kyle Carruthers got it half right regarding the recession the Yukon currently finds itself in. Mineral prices may be bigger than Yukon, but government does have a role to play when creating a climate for investment.

As the Yukon Party has only recently learned, the Yukon government cannot control mineral prices. However, for the duration of the good times the Yukon Party

are many who have a preference for the orange team or the red team, there are many others who don’t really care one way or another and are just trying to figure out who has the best chance of defeating Stephen Harper.

Justin Trudeau is a politician who entered the political scene with a large trust fund of political capital that he has been doing his best to blow. He has charisma and name recognition.

All he needed to succeed politically was to maintain some sort of body temperature.

Unfortunately the last six months or so have suggested that he may be unable to do that.

His party’s knee-jerk decision to support the government’s new heavy-handed security legislation, Bill C-51, has become a political disaster with many voters as grassroots anger has grown.

The Liberal Party position that Canada’s role in the fight against ISIS should be “noncombat” has something to offend everyone. For those who support the mission it is cowardly and weak; for those opposed it is just enough to make us complicit in yet another intervention in another Middle East conflict.

Until the Liberals belatedly released their own “families with children” policy a few weeks ago – months after the NDP and

Conservatives had released their own – they had left a serious policy vacuum. By doing so Trudeau will have to work extra hard to counter the perception that he is short on ideas.

In contrast, Thomas Mulcair has appeared much like Stephen Harper did before ousting the Liberals in 2005 – an articulate, consistent, and compelling critic of the government.

An NDP victory in Alberta may upset the conventional wisdom that the Liberals are the party best-equipped to defeat Stephen Harper.

Combine fed-up progressive voters with those who just want to “throw the bums out” and “windsock voters” – who just flap whichever direction the polls are blowing – and strange things can happen.

An NDP victory in the next election is far from a sure thing.

I’m certainly not predicting a federal “orange wave” in Alberta.

But what these results show is that the NDP can surprise us and win in unexpected places.

After recent events in Quebec and Alberta I think it is fair to move the possibility of an NDP government from the realm of the unlikely to the plausible.

The event serves as an excellent opportunity for government officials to meet with Western Canada’s mining industry and promote the jurisdiction as a good place to do business. The message I received loud and clear from industry was that the Yukon Party government’s strained relationship with First Nations was going to have an impact on investment decision’s this year and beyond.

As I have highlighted in question period and in a previous letter to the editor, despite these same mineral prices there has been GDP growth in the other territories and mining has been a part of that. Your columnist noted that since 2009 we had outperformed B.C. and N.W.T. on average.

I think this highlights an even bigger issue: despite our huge exploration boom over that period, we have fewer operating mines now than we did when the Pasloski/Cathers government came into power. The opportunity of that period of huge exploration spending has now passed us, and we are left hoping for the rebound.

WINNIPEG anada has set a new greenhouse gas emission reduction target as it prepares for international talks later this year, but critics say the goal is the weakest among G-7 countries.

Environment Minister Leona Aglukkaq says that Canada proposes to cut emissions to 30 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030 – a target she called “fair and ambitious.�

Speaking in Winnipeg last Friday, Aglukkaq promised to introduce new regulations on methane emissions produced by the oil and gas industry. There will also be new rules for natural gas-fired power generation and for the chemical and nitrogen fertilizer industries. “This target is ‌ an ambi-

tious commitment based on our national circumstances, which include a growing population, a diversified, growing economy and Canada’s position as a world leader in clean electricity generation.�

The target is slightly weaker than that of the United States, which has pledged to cut its greenhouse emissions by up to 28 per cent from 2005 levels by 2025.

Canada, the U.S. and other countries are taking their targets to a United Nations conference later this year in Paris, where a new international emissions regime is to be negotiated.

Environmental groups said Canada’s target is anything but ambitious. “The European Union, already with per-capita emissions well below Canada’s, has a 40 per cent reduction target for 2030 – more than five times greater than Can-

Aglukkaq would not answer questions about whether Canada will buy international credits to meet its targets – something that would be a change from longstanding policy. That system would see Canada get deductions from its counted emissions by investing in environmentally friendly projects in other countries. “Thank you for coming. Today’s announcement is about the 30 per cent reduction,� she said in declining to answer.

Whether Canada will even be able to meet its new targets is an open question.

Despite a previous promise to cut emissions 17 per cent below 2005 levels by 2020, Environment Canada reported last month that national greenhouse gas emissions rose between 2012 and 2013 to 726 megatonnes, the fourth consecutive annual increase.

Even if the target is met, it might not be enough.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the world’s chief scientific body on the issue, has said that worldwide greenhouse gas emissions must be cut by between 25 and 40 per cent below 1990 levels by 2020 if the world wants to avoid the worst implications of global warming.

Starting at 4 p.m. the Watershed breaks out the craft beers and whisky and becomes a 19+ establishment. Many of the beers are special orders from Outside, and Quinn boasts of the number of unique brews you can only find at the Watershed. He also runs a scotch club in Whitehorse and inevitably has a some excellent scotch available. A fan favourite has been the $9 deal of a slice of Epic pizza and a Pilsner.

This split between family coffee shop and friendly bar wasn’t by choice, but is rather a creative solution to licensing limitations, says Quinn. To get a liquor licence that would allow the Watershed to serve alcohol as well as permit minors inside would require a full kitchen, something the Watershed doesn’t have space for. The result is that when liquor starts flowing late

afternoon, those under 19 need to leave. “If that’s basically what my limitation is, what time do you switch that over at? Four o’clock seemed to make the most sense.”

Just a few streets from the bustle of the downtown core, the Watershed is located near the relatively tranquil corner of Sixth and Alexander, in the building formerly occupied by the Rah Rah Gallery. Though it could be thought a risky move to set up an establishment so far from the crowds of office workers and tourists that roam Second Avenue and Main Street, Quinn doesn’t have a problem with that.

“There’s a thousand people who live right here,” Quinn says, motioning out the front door.

The key, he says, is catering to downtown residents’ interests.

“This is much more convenient for them, whether it’s getting their coffee, getting their off-

sales at night, just finding a place they can walk to for food or whatever else.” Weekly events include board games on Mondays, live music on Saturdays and free movie screenings on Sundays, among others.

Being where the people live has been paying off so far, says Quinn. It’s been just over six weeks since the Watershed has been open, but already there have been a number of times that have packed the place out. The grand opening was a shoulder-to-shoulder affair, and Quinn got a pile of positive comments from patrons.

The night of Alberta’s recent election results also drew many customers. “There were 40 drunk socialists here who were really, really excited,” says Quinn. “We got a noise complaint that I’m dealing with, but I mean it was a one-time generational thing.”

Big band brings big sound to birthday bash

Former members of The Big Band will be returning to the Yukon to perform a 25-year anniversary concert at Mount McIntyre on Saturday night.

artha Hartman-Stehelin was brimming with confidence when she auditioned to be the vocalist for a nameless big band in Whitehorse 25 years ago.

Conductor Henry Klassen was looking for musicians that would be performing at a circumpolar health conference.

“I came in and sang, and told him, ‘You know that I’m the one that’s right for this part,’” Hartman-Stehelin said.

“He said, ‘Well, there are other people auditioning,’ and I said, ‘Yeah, I know they’re good, but none of them know big band like I do.’”

It marked the beginning of the Circumpolar Swing Band, and Hartman-Stehelin’s 10-year tenure as singer for the 1940s swing music group.

On Saturday night, past and current members of the 19-piece band – now known as The Big Band – are celebrating its silver anniversary with a birthday bash at Mount McIntyre.

Over the years, the band has

played countless shows around the territory but one of the most memorable performances was in the summer of 1992.

The band opened for a group of musicians at the Dawson City Music Festival that would soon become one of the country’s most beloved bands, the Barenaked Ladies.

“Every night was an absolute crazy party with these guys,” Hartman-Stehelin said of the band, who were gaining popularity at the time but still without a major label.

“And when they were on stage, the place was totally alive and rocking like you wouldn’t believe.”

Former trumpeter Tim Bullen remembers that weekend fondly, too.

Musicians at the festival were required to take part in a clinic or workshop offered on site, and Bullen chose acapella singing.

“We’re in this little Anglican church by the river, the place is packed and there’s no one to lead this thing,” he said.

“All of a sudden these guys from Barenaked Ladies walk in and they taught us how to sing ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight.’”

Bullen and Hartman-Stehelin, who now lives in St. Albert, Alta., will be returning to their old stomping grounds this weekend for the celebration, which is both a performance and a reunion of sorts.

Hartman-Stehelin said she’s always been fond of big band music.

Being part of a band meant an opportunity to socialize with likeminded people, too.

“We had more fun than you can ever shake a stick at,” she said.

“It wasn’t just a band that loved to play, but we had incredible musicians, too. Monday night was sort of our social night, we had band rehearsal and would go to the Kopper King for wings after.”

She still remembers the band’s first performance as if it was yesterday, and watching people’s faces light up as they heard the band play.

But the greatest thing about big band music, she says, is how it brings people back to innocence.

“It was before the bomb, before Kennedy was shot, the bands really came to life then,” she said.

Bullen, who has been playing the trumpet for over 40 years, re-

members performing at the Commissioner’s Ball in Dawson City and at the 50th anniversary of the Alaska Highway celebrations.

He said he’s looking forward to meeting up with the friends he hasn’t seen in 20 years, and “getting that Yukon flavour back in my blood.”

Fawn Fritzen has been with the band for about seven years, and its vocalist for the last two.

She originally joined as a pianist, which was a bit of a learning curve, she said.

“I’d never played with a band before, never played jazz, so I got through my first tune and Kelly (music director) said ‘OK, can you swing it?’”

“I had no idea what he was talking about. But everyone was really nice and I went back and tried it again, and learned what swing meant.”

Fritzen, who replaced outgoing vocalist Rebekah Bell in 2013, describes the experience of performing with a 19-piece band as “energizing” and compares it to being part of a choir or a sports team.

“It’s a huge high,” she said, “to have so many people supporting

your sound.”

Saturday’s celebrations will feature three sets of dance music, Fritzen said.

There will also be a tribute and fundraiser for local musician Bruce Bergman, who needs triple bypass surgery followed by a kidney transplant, she added.

The show is on the same night as another fundraiser for Bergman, held at the Robert Service Campground.

“Since we couldn’t make it to that we wanted to find a way to contribute,” Fritzen said.

All proceeds from the evening’s liquor sales will go towards Bergman’s medical expenses.

Tickets are $20 and available at Dean’s Strings. Children 12 and under get in free. Doors open at 7 p.m. with music starting at 7:30 p.m.

“And if you happen to wear silver, you’ll be eligible for a prize,” Fritzen said.

“But the most important thing at the end of the day is the music and people coming to dance.

That’s what we do, we play dance music.”

Think outside the pot to grow a big garden in small spaces Shelley Levis

R

ow homes and townhouses are becoming more and more popular. If you are one of these homeowners, then you already know the challenges of working with a small garden or a postage stamp for a yard. You don’t have to let the lack of exterior space limit your ability to grow produce; you just have to grow up!

Pinterest is the go to place to get ideas on everything from recipes to easy DIY’s and there is no shortage of garden advice floating through the myriad of eye-catching photos in the feed. Growing vertically has become very popular in the small space garden genre, but you should be aware that not all the methods are necessarily safe.

The first offender I want to address is this idea of using wood pallets for vertical gardening.

Never, ever use one of these for growing edible plants. Wood pallets are often treated with preservatives to prevent rot and carry all kinds of cargo including toxic chemicals.

There is no way to be absolutely certain that the pallet you found in a junk pile isn’t going to leach harmful chemicals into the soil of the plants that feed you and your family.

Reusing plastic containers as planters is another method that needs examination. Recycling codes can be found on the bottom of plastic containers and bottles.

1, 2, 4 and 5 are considered safer plastics, while 3, 6 and 7 should be completely avoided. Plastics that contain BPA or other harmful toxins do not make ideal planters as

Gutter gardening is a great use of vertical space. Strawberries, mesclun greens and herbs do great in these trough shaped planters when attached to a wall or fence. Be cautious of using salvaged gutters that may have lead paint; galvanized steel is your safest option here.

Multi-pocket planters made from wool or breathable cotton is widely available on the market today. These vertical gardens can grow a lot of food and be hung from a railing or an exterior wall.

A simple DIY version is to use an inexpensive cloth shoe holder that’s

perfect for a salad garden.

Vining vegetables can be trained to grow upward. Try growing cucumbers or zucchinis on a trellis in a planter for maximum use of space. Grow a sunflower in a pot and add a seed or two of beans to climb up its stock. Create hanging baskets of mixed lettuces with some trailing nasturtiums whose blossoms can be added to salads for a beautiful edible addition that will impress your guests.

Think outside the pot when it comes to plants and look at ways you can use your space no matter how small it is, to grow a big garden.

pring is a bustle of activity in the garden at my home. In between weeding and seeding, I stop to watch the birds congregate in the trees, peck at freshly dug soil and hunt for nesting materials. As they go about their business completely oblivious to me, I marvel at how intelligent and somewhat methodical they actually are.

There is no need to set an alarm clock in our house. Wakey the Woodpecker is reliably by every morning around 7 a.m. to hammer on the metal exhaust vent on the roof above our bedroom. This has been a consistent practice of his every spring for the last three years and from what I understand about their life spans, this could go on for another three to seven!

A birdhouse mounted by my garage is once again occupied. I spotted the new residents moving in the other day as they pulled the old nesting material out and brought the new materials in. I often wonder if it’s the same family of chickadees and their offspring that have claimed that dwelling as their own from year to year.

I watched a pair of busy robins carting off the dried grass blades of my garden from my writing desk the other day and paused to observe their activity. They were absolutely adorable picking threw the debris then swooping up to their nest in the tree with beaks full of building materials.

While I’m no bird expert, I do enjoy having them in my yard and

But sky-high home prices, hefty realtor fees and land-transfer taxes deterred her. Instead she’s opted for a large-scale renovation – including building on a three-storey addition with an ensuite master bathroom and a walk-in closet – to the tune of roughly $150,000. “We’re creating our dream home, that we plan on never leaving,� McDermott said.

Renovation contractors say soaring home prices in Toronto and Vancouver are encouraging many homeowners to pursue renovations instead of shopping for new homes. “They can’t afford to buy new, so what they’re doing is they’re improving the living spaces that they’re in now,� said Jon-Carlos Tsilfidis, the renovators council chair at the Building Industry and

According to a poll recently released by CIBC, Canadian homeowners plan to spend an average of $17,142 on renovations this year, with basic maintenance such as painting, flooring and replacing appliances coming in as the top category for planned repairs.

However, that’s down 13 per cent from last year, when home-

The telephone poll of 1,020 Canadians conducted by Nielsen Consumer Insights is considered reliable within 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

f you’ve lived with your kitchen for awhile, chances are you’ve got drawers full of stuff you rarely use and cupboards you just hate. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a well-organized kitchen that makes food preparation a pleasure?

Frotten meets the challenge in Arizona

hitehorse’s Jessica Frotten picked up gold, silver and bronze in the Copper State over the weekend.

The 27-year-old para wheelchair racer won four medals at the Desert Challenge Games in Mesa, Arizona.

“I’m happy with it,” said Frotten. “Last year at this meet I didn’t do very well and didn’t place. It’s nice to see that I did a lot better this year.”

“There was a gnarly storm there and conditions weren’t super hot. So no personal bests (other than in the 1,500) but I pushed well and I medalled.”

Frotten captured gold in the 200-metre, silver in the 100and 400-metre, and bronze in the 800-metre in the T53 division.

She also claimed fifth in the 1,500-metre, in which the T53 and T54 classes were combined, but was third for her division.

Interestingly, the only event she didn’t win a medal in was the only one she set a personal best time in, finishing the 1,500 in 4:15.90.

“Funny story. I’m just getting into these 1,500s and I kind of miscounted my laps and thought I was done the 1,500 when I still had a whole other lap to go,” said Frotten. “When I realized the race wasn’t over, I did the fastest excel I’ve ever done in my life to get back into the race. I still managed to PB.” The Desert Challenge Games marked the second meet in a row Frotten raked in hardware. She won five gold at the Dogwood Track and Field Meet in Victoria, B.C. the previous weekend.

Am and Parapan American Games this summer in Toronto. She had already reached the qualifying time in the 400 at Florida’s Daytona Snowbird Classic in March and then

the 200 with a time of 34.78, just 0.9 second ahead of Mexico’s Lucero Anahi Vazqu.

“It was a good race … It’s nice to come first,” said Frotten. “It’s nice to race people in my class too. There just aren’t many in Canada.

“It’s nice to see where I’m sitting with the rest of the world.”

“Friday night there was a crazy storm with thunder and lightning and floods, and it delayed all the races an hour,” she added. “We raced the 200 and for the 800 it started raining again and that was a really bad race for me. They had us sitting in the call room for an hour and by the time we got out there all my muscles were seized out.”

“Word on the street is it’s the fastest track in the world,” said Frotten. “So if it’s going to happen, it’s going to happen there.”

“I really haven’t been training for it. So if it happens, it happens, if it doesn’t, I’m not going to lose any sleep about it.”

Last year at the Daniela Jutzeler Memorial Frotten captured her first international event medal with a bronze in the 200-metre and raced the 100-metre in 19.19 seconds, putting her ninth in the IPC world rankings.

The six-time Yukon steelshooting champion also took fourth at the B.C. championships last season before heading to his first world championship in October. At the IPSC World Shoot Simmons placed 162nd out of 367 shooters in the open division and sixth out 25 of Canadians.

We are sad to announce the death of our friend Jim Parkinson, “Parky” to his those who knew him.

Jim passed away at his place on Lake Laberge on Wednesday May 13th.

Parky leaves behind the many friends and acquaintances he made during the 43 years he lived in the north.
