The Abbotsford Police Department (APD) is warning the public about a rash of street robberies that have taken place this year.

A total of 18 robberies occurred from Jan. 1 to May 18 in various locations throughout the city and involved the victims being confronted in public places. Items such as cellphones,

cash and jewelry were taken.

Const. Ian MacDonald said although the total is not “extraordinary” compared to the typical numbers of such incidents, police are concerned about the violence that has accompanied some of them.

He said in one case about a week ago at a park off High Drive, two men had gone out for an early-morning smoke when they were

swarmed and beaten by up to eight men.

One of the victims lost consciousness, and both were taken to hospital by ambulance.

MacDonald said suspect descriptions in the 18 robberies have varied, but all are described as young men.

Province employs fewer child mental health psychologists than seven years ago

n 2008, the province was told it had “miles to go” to address mental health issues in children.

Seven years later, 69 per cent of children with mental disorders – more than 50,000 kids – still do not receive specialized services.

The government says progress is being made, with 5,000 more children getting help. But while that number has increased, The News has found that the agency tasked with treating such kids employs fewer nurses and psychologists than it did in 2008.

Similarly, over the last seven years, provincial spending on Children and Youth Mental Health (CYMH) services has failed to keep up with inflation, much less the number of clients.

Children and Youth, and last November from the BC Liberal-chaired Select Standing Committee on Children and Youth – for the government to make youth mental health a priority.

That has left service providers doing their best to treat a growing clientele with funding that hasn’t seen a substantial boost in years.

As the executive director of the Fraser Valley Child Development Centre (FVCDC), Karen McLean oversees a team that provides support to children with developmental and behavioural disorders – including ADHD (Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder) and Anxiety Disorder.

McLean said her organization has been receiving more referrals in recent years – often from schools.

McLean says the CYMH front-line staff do great work in assisting families, but there have been no appreciable hikes in funding for FVCDC programs for some time. Asked when funding last increased, a long pause follows.

“It’s been probably seven or eight years.”

In 2003, the province created a special plan it labelled as a landmark in efforts to address mental health concerns in children. Five years later, a follow-up report was issued called “Promises kept, Miles to Go.” That title summed up the report’s diverse conclusions.

That 2008 report found that while advances had been made, “the overall child and youth mental health service system is clearly inadequate in many respects.”

Since then, British Columbia’s Representative for Children and Youth, Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond, has repeatedly told the government that the mental health system for children is failing and requires significant improvement.

And last year, a team headed by SFU professor Charlotte Waddell delivered a strong call to action in a report prepared for the Ministry of Child and Family Development (MCFD).

Families face “stark service shortfalls,” and only one-third of children who need help get it, Waddell and her team wrote.

“Mental disorders are arguably the leading health problems that Canadian children and youth face from infancy onwards,” the report concluded. “These shortfalls would not be tolerated for physical health problems in young people, such as cancer or diabetes, and should no longer be tolerated for mental health problems.”

That report recommended tripling investments in evidence-based treatment systems and prevention programs to both treat mental disorders and reduce their prevalence in the province. That sounds expensive, but the B.C. government’s current spending on CYMH is just 0.2 per cent of provincial spending.

In 2008/9 the CYMH budget doubled to $89 million. Since then, as the total provincial government budget has grown by 21 per cent to $45 billion – more than half of which goes to health care – spending on child and youth mental health has risen by just $4 million, or 4.4 per cent over six years, a figure less than the inflation rate.

The increase in the number of children and youth receiving services means there has been a decrease in per-child funding.

The $93 million allocated to CYMH services last year was less than half of what the government spent on Community, Sport and Cultural Development. It’s also less than seven per cent

‘Alarming’ prevalence of child mental health issues From A4

The 2015/16 budget saw total government spending rise by $500 million. Of that, $1.3 million went into CYMH services.

The lack of spending growth can be seen in staffing levels, with the number of psychiatrists and nurse clinicians employed by CYMH declining over the last seven years.

In 2008, the province employed 59 frontline nurses and seven supervising nurses, according to numbers provided by the MCFD. By 2015, the number of front-line nurses had dropped to 42, although the number of supervisors had risen to 10.

The number of frontline psychologists declined from 37 to 33 over the same seven years, while the number of supervising psychologists rose from six to eight.

In response to a series of questions about

changing staffing levels, a government spokesperson said the number of front-line staff employed by CYMH has increased by two per cent, from 442 to 453.

Most of those are social program officers who provide services such as intake, assessment, diagnosis, treatment and crisis intervention for children. Such officers make considerably less money than psychologists.

After repeated requests for an interview with MCFD minister Stephanie Cadieux over the course of several weeks, The News was informed the minister was unavailable.

MCFD communication staff did provide written statements to a series of questions regarding child and youth mental health.

The statements, attributed to the minister, acknowledge that more B.C. children are facing mental health challenges. Asked if child and youth mental health is a priority, the statements point

to the $1.3-million rise in CYMH funding as evidence that the government is “committed to serving and supporting children and youth with mental health and/or substance use challenges and their families.”

committee, which is chaired by BC Liberal MLA Jane Thornthwaite, and includes MLAs from both parties, including Abbotsford South MLA Darryl Plecas, delivered an interim report to the legislature that declared “the prevalence of mental health issues among youth is alarming,” and that “current service levels and delivery models are not meeting growing demands for services.”

The report continued: “The committee believes that youth mental health needs to be treated as a high priority by government, and that a concerted effort is required to develop a cohesive and effective mental health system that provides timely, responsive, and seamless services to youth and families. This will require additional resources, enhancements to existing services, and the identification of service delivery models tailored to meet the specific needs of communities across the province.”

Three months later, that interim report was on the minds of staff at the B.C. division of the (CMHA) when they evaluated the provincial government’s 2015/16 budget.

With the budget for CYMH services slated to increase by just $2.8 million over the next three years, Jonathan Morris, public policy director for CMHA BC, called the budget a “missed opportunity.”

In an interview, Thornthwaite, who is also the parliamentary secretary for child mental health, wouldn’t comment on budgeting for CYMH programs, saying that is not her role.

The standing committee will eventually deliver recommendations on how to improve the child mental health system. But asked whether parents should expect improvements and action to result from those recommendations, Thornthwaite avoided making any promises.

“I can’t speak on behalf of government; what direction they’re going to go,” she said.

But she did point to the creation of an integrated model of service delivery in the interior of the province.

“There’s a lot of movement going ahead right now.”

Asked if government would commit to implementing any

MCLEAN recommendations from Thornthwaite’s committee, a MCFD statement attributed to Cadieux said government would “consider” them.

Earlier this month, the standing committee was briefed on the New Brunswick delivery system.

Thornthwaite said she was intrigued to hear that province had improved services by fostering more cooperation between providers – and that it didn’t require more funding.

TTTT Meanwhile, back at the FVCDC, McLean said staff are doing their best with the available resources.

“There are kids who are waiting for services,” she said.

She is optimistic that some of the structural changes being made will help make the system more efficient and easier to navigate.

McLean believes uncertain economic times have limited government spending, but she warns that underfunding the system isn’t necessarily economically prudent in the long run, citing societal costs that come with dealing with adults with addictions, mental illnesses and learning disabilities.

“The importance of our investment in young children, in their positive growth and development and early intervention when they have struggles, will pay for itself down the road,” she said.

“Hopefully, the economy improves.”

On five occasions, the thieves wore masks or balaclavas to cover their faces.

All but two of the victims have been male, and 15 of them were under the age of 30.

MacDonald said the victims have suffered a range of injuries that have been minor or required hospitalization.

He said more than one-third of these incidents took place on Saturdays and almost all occurred after 4 p.m.

The robberies have occurred with both the suspects and victims arriving in the same area on foot, and they tend to take place in less-populated and less well-lit areas, including Mill Lake Park and the Bourquin bus loop.

“Although APD investigators feel that some of these incidents are not random, we still want citizens to be aware and to elevate their personal safety practices,” he said.

MacDonald recommended that people walk in pairs or groups and stay near busier locations with good lighting.

The irked woman spat a remark at Adam’s mom, Amanda.

“Your son is a monster.”

Just another painful moment in a lifetime of struggle for a parent of a young child with a mental disorder.

One more sharp reminder for Amanda that the monster is not her son; it is the depth of mental health issues among B.C.’s children and youth, and the lack of help.

Adam is among an estimated 80,000 kids in this province who experience some sort of mental disorder.

Of those, more than 50,000 do not get specialized assistance. Many don’t even get a diagnosis.

If those statistics seem staggering, so is the government response to the issue.

In the past seven years, Children and Youth Mental Health spending rose by a paltry $4 million. Of the total provincial budget, CYMH comprises 0.2 per cent.

In that period, the number of front-line CYMH psychologists dropped from 37 to 33.

Front-line nurses went from 59 to 42, although the number of supervising nurses crept from seven to 10.

What has ballooned in the past seven years, though, is the legion of children needing specialized diagnosis and treatment.

Perhaps it’s a greater awareness on the part of parents that some child behaviours are indicators something is seriously amiss.

Likely, it’s also identification by teachers better equipped to recognize mental disorders, and who make referrals or requests for special needs assistance in the classroom.

Whatever the factors, there can be no doubt that government services fall appallingly short of dealing with children’s mental

health issues.

There’s no shortage of professional reports and expert voices that support that statement – among them B.C.’s Representative for Children and Youth, Mary Ellen TurpelLafond, who has repeatedly identified the CYMH system as failing.

For much of society, it all falls into the category of too bad, but it’s “their problem.”

Yet, like so many of social ills, it is really everyone’s problem.

Why? Children with mental disorders who go undiagnosed and untreated don’t get better on their own. Mental health issues rarely go away with age.

In fact, they usually worsen.

And that makes government inaction and anemic funding response a financial fallacy and a social crime.

Providing specialized services to mentally ill children is expensive, yes. The cost of failing to treat is far greater.

dents. That can affect the quality of education for the entire class.

Intervention and treatment for any human ailment is virtually always easier and less expensive earlier rather than later. Certainly that must be so for mental health.

As the teen years progress, so does the potential for mental disorders to become exacerbated by peer pressures, exposure to drugs and alcohol, and frustration with social identity and acceptance, to name just a few of the increasingly complex factors.

Young adults are less inclined to maintain consistent counselling sessions.

When mental health problems begin to manifest in a larger context, the potential for severe situations also increases.

Homelessness would be one.

Many of the people living on the street and under bridges in this city suffer from mental illness. Likely they did as children as well.

Criminal activity would be another.

Homelessness is mundane compared to the cost of crime in terms of enforcement, justice and incarceration.

And then there’s the potential of violence, which can carry a price beyond value.

It brings new meaning to the expression, “Pity the children.”

New history book highlights change from village to city A new book on Abbotsford’s history will document the community’s change from a village to a city.

The MSA Museum Society has announced the publication of “Abbotsford, from Village to City: A Commitment to Excellence and Innovation.”

The book is edited by local poet and historian Robert Martens and museum archivist Anneleen van Dijk. It highlights Abbotsford’s growth and development in industry, health and community care, justice services, culture, and environmental consciousness.

“It is inspirational to see so many people from such a wide range of backgrounds contributing to this

project. This book represents Abbotsford’s journey from a village to the city it is today,” said van Dijk.

With written contributions by more than 40 local authors, most of whom were personally involved in the stories they tell, the result is a collection of essays with intimacy and passion. Topics include the origins and evolution of UFV, Community Services, and the Abbotsford Airshow, as well as the story of the city’s populist resistance to the construction of the SE2 power plant in Sumas, Wash.

Tragically, our provincial government, specifically our premier, clearly endorses foreign ownership from comments she has made. Certainly she must realize refusal to take the matter in hand forces Canadian citizens and residents out of the market and allows our land to be taken over by financial tycoons that care nothing other than for getting maximum return on their investment with absolutely no concern for our country and even less for our citizens.

Recently, it was reported that properties in the Greater Vancouver were up for sale, but Canadian buyers were and/or are excluded.

On the issue of foreign ownership, all levels of government should place severe restrictions on the sale of property to foreign owners. In addition, foreign owners should be required to pay a premium on property taxes and any property transfer taxes, especially when they take over properties and simply leave them vacant with the view of re-selling them at some later date.

I would ask Premier Christy Clark if she is in any way concerned for those citizens or residents who are being shut out of property ownership solely due to greed on the part of current property owners who are prepared to have our country taken over by foreigners.

Lighthouse Theatre is the musical theatre program of Heritage Christian Online School, composed of 38 distributed learni n g / h o m e - s ch o o l e d and public school students, ranging from Grades 2 to 12.

The students are committed to a high standard of excellence in acting, singing, and choreography and to the costumes and impressive set design.

My Son Pinocchio Jr. is a mix of heartwarming fairy tale and action-packed adventure, touching on the universal themes of family and love, as Geppetto learns what it means to become a father.

Performances are at the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium on Friday, May 22 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, May 23 at 2 and 7 p.m.

The resident had left her front door open and, when she was in a different area, saw a shadow. When she came back in the room, a woman was standing in the house and said she was looking for her missing cat.

The intruder quickly left the residence, and the homeowner noticed that her purse had been knocked to the floor. It appeared as if her purse had been rummaged through, but nothing was missing.

After the homeowner posted the incident on Facebook, others came forward with similar stories.

Most said they had come across a woman on their property, saying she was looking for either a lost dog or cat.

In one case, she was holding a cat carrier.

No one reported that any items were stolen.

One resident was able to photograph the woman, with a male companion, and copies of the pictures were then posted around Matsqui Village as a warning of her suspicious activities.

The matter was also reported to the APD, who are now investigating. Anyone with information, or similar stories, is asked to call the APD at 604-8595225 or text abbypd (222973).

Annual Run for Water on May 31

Fundraiser will support clean-water project in Yella, Ethiopia The annual Envision Financial Run for Water takes place in Abbotsford on Sunday, May 31.

This year’s event raises money for a clean-water project in Yella, Ethiopia, where villagers often have to walk eight hours to access drinkable water.

The funds raised here will go toward laying 19 kilometres of piping, three spring caps and 46 water points in Yella.

The Run for Water offers three route options, all leaving from Mill Lake Park on Bevan Avenue. The

half marathon begins at 7:30 a.m., followed by the 10 km run at 8:30 and the 5 km fun run at 10 a.m.

Road closures begin at 7 a.m. on Sunday and will re-open to traffic at 10:30 a.m.

An ultra marathon

takes place the previous day, covering 55 km from Chilliwack to Abbotsford.

The event amalgamates separate walks held in Abbotsford, Chilliwack and Hope in previous years.

The walk begins at 1 p.m. with two route options – 2.5km and 5km. The route is accessible to everyone, including those using wheelchairs, scooters or strollers.

The event includes live entertainment, snacks and draw prizes.

Diversity and immigration partnership Program for newcomers enters its second year Alex BUTLER Abbotsford News

The Fraser Valley Diversity and Immigration Partnership (FVDIP) is heading into its second year of assisting immigrants in the Abbotsford community.

An event in downtown Abbotsford last

week launched the second year of the partnership, which is made up of leaders from different organizations, sectors and industries in the Fraser Valley area.

federal government’s Local Immigration Partnership (LIP). LIPs bring together community groups and organizations to develop coordinated approaches to promote and incorporate immigrant settlement and integration.

Hardeep Sidhu, chair of the FVDIP council, said Abbotsford welcomes more than 1,000 immigrants each year.

She said moving to a new country is stressful, but the community can help.

“Organizations have come together to form this collective initiative … designed to strengthen our ability to welcome immigrants who call the Fraser Valley their home.”

The partnership coun-

cil – which has representatives from the Chamber of Commerce, school district, University of the Fraser Valley and more – aims to help attract, settle and integrate immigrants to build a stronger community and businesses.

The council aims to learn what is available for immigrants, what is lacking and how to increase awareness of immigrant needs.

In 2014 he was invited to perform at the International Cello Festival of Canada and was honoured to perform alongside many great cellists.

After receiving his bachelor in cello performance, Gjernes hopes to complete his master’s degree in Europe.

The concert is at Matsqui Centennial Auditorium (32315

Local golfer signs with Cascades Nathan Bahnman, one of the top junior golfers in the Fraser Valley, has signed with the UFV Cascades men’s golf team.

Bahnman, who is finishing off his Grade 12 studies at Abbotsford’s Mennonite Educational Institute, will join the Cascades in the fall.

“We are thrilled to have Nathan join the Cascades golf program,” head coach Chris Bertram said. “I have watched him develop as a player over the last few years, and I am confident he could have a big impact right away.”

Bahnman, age 17, plays out of Ledgeview Golf Club and Cultus Lake Golf Club. He won a pair of Canadian Junior Golf Association (CJGA) events last summer, and represented Canada as part of a CJGA team at the 2014 Dutch Junior Open. He finished tied for 49th and was tied for top Canadian honours at the U21 international event.

Injuries plague Cards From torn muscles to concussions and facial fractures, the spring of 2015 hasn’t been a great time to be an Abbotsford Cardinal.

The B.C. Premier Baseball League team has been beset by injuries in recent weeks, and the standings has shown the results. After

a hot start to the season that saw the Cardinals win five of their first six games, coach Corey Eckstein’s shorthanded team has recorded only a single win this month.

ending,” he said, and even some of those players still in the lineup, like star Tanner Rempel, are playing hurt.

The Cardinals have called several players up from their junior team, and Eckstein said they acquitted themselves well Tuesday during a 7-6 loss to the Langley Blaze that saw the winning run scored in the ninth inning.

“We have to get better everyday and some of these young kids are going to have to step up for us.”

Brain injury can happen in a moment and change a life forever.

On May 13, health minister Terry Lake announced $3 million in funding to the Brain Injury Alliance to support those with brain injuries.

Fraser Valley Brain Injury Association (FVBIA) executive director Carol Paetkau of Abbotsford was in Victoria to witness the announcement.

“This was the culmination of years of work brought to fruition by the collaborative efforts of four brain injury associations (Fraser Valley, Northern, Prince George and Kamloops), who formed the Brain Injury Alliance in 2014, and the government of British Columbia.”

Straiton Community Club is hosting a strawberry brunch on Sunday, May 31 to raise money to help fill the gap in the roof of its heritage building, Straiton Community Hall.

The Brunch Between – taking place halfway between Mother’s and Father’s Day – runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the hall, 4698 Sumas Mtn. Rd. The brunch includes strawberry apple crumble, strawberry almond roulade with mascarpone, strawberry bacon salad and more.

Verdict: I found the new F150 to be slight improvement over the previous version with most of the improvements coming from the interior. The new body design is more of a personal preference and I think it will take me a while longer to come around. Give it a year and I’ll let you know if it was a hit or a miss.

the historical Jaipur Polo Club in New Delhi, located within the racecourse.

Cartier has enjoyed a longstanding relationship with India and in particular the

Maharajas dating back to 1911. They would entrust Cartier to design and set their precious stones into magnificent pieces of jewelry.

The opulence and elegance of India’s long-standing automotive legacy has returned to India thanks to the vision and hard work of the event creator and

director, Mark Shand, a British travel writer and conservationist. Sadly, he died in 2014.

The other person responsible for the event is the renowned Indian automotive historian and expert, His Highness

Rana Manvendra Singh of Barwani who hand picks some of the rarest restored and preserved vintage automobiles from across India.

BAMPTON, Wayne It is with great sadness we announce the unexpected passing of our dear Dad, Wayne Allan Bampton on May 9, 2015 at the age of 54 years.

He will be forever missed by his children JJ (Alysha), Bill, Kris, Katryna (Dan), grandson Jaxon and his little buddy Devon. Wayne was predeceased by his mother Elizabeth and his passing will be mourned by his father Stanley, brother Gary (Millie), sister Diane (Paul) and their families and a huge amount of friends and extended family.

A service to celebrate Wayne’s life will be held on Saturday, May 23 at 1:00pm at Salvation Army Cascade Community Church 35190 DeLair Rd., Abbotsford.

KOBES, Tina KOBES - Mrs. Tina, late of Lamson Road, Sumas Prairie, passed into the presence of her Lord on May 17, 2015 at the age of 85 years. She was predeceased by her husband Sid in 1998. She is survived by her loving family, son Jake (Grace) and their children Sydney (Jodi), Janina (Randy), Edwin (Debbie), Heidi (Theo) and Leslie (Sarah); son John (Norine) and their children Daryn (Cheri), Brayden, Craig (Jessica) and Rylan; daughter Jane (Herman) Driegen and their children Lynn (John), Christina (Matt), Cheryl, Shannon and Karen; and by 19 great grandchildren. A graveside service was held on Thursday, May 21 in the Musselwhite Cemetery, followed by a memorial service in the Abbotsford Canadian Reformed Church with Pastor Justin Roukema officiating.

KVAAS, Robert “Roy” July 26, 1932 - May 12, 2015 It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Roy. Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, wonderful brother, friend and neighbor, on May 12, 2015 at Ridge Meadows Hospital. He is predeceased by his parents, Frederick and Madeline Kvaas, his infant brother George, his brothers Sonny in 2013, Danny in 2011, Alvin in 2007 and his sister Norma Rosk in 2010. He leaves behind loved ones to mourn his passing, his loving wife of 56 years Margaret, children Tim (Joanne), Christine (Wayne), Patricia and Bradley; 9 grandchildren, Ryan, Samantha, Kyle, Natalie, Nathan, Greg, Daniela, Sarah and Scott; 3 great grandchildren Ethan, Gabbi and Gay; sisters Dorothy, Thelma, Fia, Reta, Amy, Leona and Trudean; Brothers Gordon and Douglas, many nieces and nephews and their extended families and friends.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday May 29, 2015 at 11:00 am at the Garden Hill Funeral Chapel 11765 - 224th St. Maple Ridge. In lieu of flowers donations would be appreciated to the charity of your choice.

Suzy passed away peacefully on May 13, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Suzy was born in Langley, BC on April 12, 1952 and lived her whole life in the lower mainland. Tragically predeceased by son Jarrid in 2004, Suzy is survived and will be forever missed by daughter Brittany (Terry), husband Kevin, stepson Lee (Chelsea), grandchildren Benjamin, Lukas and Tucker, mother Joan, sister Connie, brother Gordie (Kim) and many other friends and family too numerous to mention.

Suzy was a long time employee of London Drugs and was eternally grateful for the network of friends she had through her work family. She was an avid hiker, loved to dragonboat (and that network of friends), working in her garden and yard at Birch Bay, loved animals and was a regular supporter of the SPCA. Suzy had a smile that could light up a room and embraced life every day, no matter what challenges she faced. Suzy firmly believed her family and friends came first and she was the first one to provide comfort in times of need and to help celebrate their successes.

Suzy’s passing leaves a hole that can never be filled but memories of her kindness, her joy of life and love and commitment to friends and family will never be forgotten.

In lieu of flowers donations to the Mission Hospice would be gratefully appreciated. A Celebration of Suzy’s life will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2015, in Abbotsford, time and location still to be determined.

GANES, Sharon Janet (nee Rothenbusch) Sept. 12, 1956 - May 6, 2015 Mrs. Sharon Ganes of Camrose, formerly of Mission, B.C., passed away on Wednesday, May 06, 2015 at the age of 58 years.

Sharon will be fondly remembered by her husband of 37 years, Trevlyn; her children Leah (Jeff) Young of Okotoks, Joshua (Jenny) Ganes of Vancouver; grandchildren Chloe, Lucy, Bennett, Amber, and Isla; her sister Shirley Schartner; brothers Mark (Lori) Rothenbusch and Daniel (Karen) Rothenbusch; and her parents Jack and Janet Rothenbusch; as well as many friends and relatives. She was predeceased by her brotherin-law Earle Schartner.

Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at 1:30pm., from The Camrose Pentecostal Church with Rev. Dave Hesje and Rev. Paul Knudtson officiating.

Inurnment will take place in The Mission Cemetery at 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 22, 2015.

Lena Dudzik

November 15, 1927 May 15, 2015 Lena (Michalina) Dudzik was born in Wostok, Alberta. She was one of six children born to William and Irene Chipiuk. The family owned a large cattle and grain farm in St. Lina, Alberta and Lena spent her youth assisting with tending to the farm.

As a young woman she moved to the west coast where she met her husband, Bruno and they were wed in 1954. Bruno and Lena welcomed two sons into the world, Barry and Frank.

They were fiercely proud of their children and instilled in them a strong work ethic and a great sense of responsibility. Lena was a devoted wife and mother who enjoyed old country music, dancing, crocheting, baking and gardening. She was also a devoted member of the Holy Cross Ukrainian Catholic Church in Whalley, B.C. and a valued member of the women’s church auxiliary. Lena was a fabulous cook and hostess. A meal at the Dudzik home was full of laughter and awash in tasty homemade delicacies from Eastern Europe. As Baba, Lena was extremely proud of the many accomplishments of her five grandchildren: Trent (Stacey), Clark, Danika, Paige and Evan. Lena was predeceased by her husband Bruno and brothers John and Joe. She is survived by brothers Alec and Tom and sister Pearl Peniuk, sons Barry (Deirdre) and Frank (Lynda), grandchildren, extended family and friends. The Dudzik family would like to thank Dr. A. Chafe and the entire staff at Menno Home (every one of you is an angel on earth) in Abbotsford. Evening prayers for Lena will take place at the Avalon Surrey Funeral Home at 13288 108 Avenue Surrey (Whalley) on Thursday, May 21st at 7:00 p.m..

Mass for Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 23rd at the Holy Cross Ukrainian Catholic Church, 13753 108 Avenue Surrey - reception to follow. Interment will take place following the reception at Valley View Cemetery at 14644 72 Avenue. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations being made to the Alzheimer’s Society of B.C. FROESE Gerhard “George” April 8, 1917 – April 24, 2015

FROESE, Gerhard “George” of Abbotsford, BC went to be with the Lord at the age of 98 at Abbotsford Regional Hospital on April 24, 2015. He was born on April 8, 1917 in Isiljkulj, Siberia, Russia.

George was predeceased by his father and mother, Isaac and Elizabeth Koop, his adoptive parents Abram and Catherina Froese, his wife, Irma (nee Funk), his younger sister Mary and his other brothers and sisters in Russia.

George will be forever missed by his loving wife, Sue (nee Schmidt); his 6 children Ed Froese (Vi), Gerald Froese (Vivian), Bettyanne Neufeld (Ron), Jack Froese (Debbie), Eileen Deros (Glenn) and Marjorie Toews (Dan), 21 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

George moved from Russia to Canada with his adoptive parents and sister, Mary,

at the age of 13 and settled in Steinbach, Manitoba. In 1944 he moved with his family to a dairy farm in Matsqui, BC. In 1945 George married Irma and settled in Mt. Lehman where he founded Bakerview Farms, a commercial egg farm, and raised his 6 children. George enjoyed his life as a chicken farmer and was very proud of the fact that the farm has remained in the family. George enjoyed his many hours of fishing at Loon Lake with his family, traveling the world and spending time with his grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, May 30 at 11:00 a.m. at Bakerview MB Church, 2285 Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford.

George was always grateful for the Mennonite Central Committee’s help in relocating his family during its move from Russia to Canada.
