Clean-up of homeless camp under highway overpass Alex BUTLER Abbotsford News

Crews cleaned up a homeless camp on Tuesday under the Hwy. 1 overpass at King and Riverside roads, as the Ministry of Transportation took action to clear the site.

The camp has generated a number of public complaints about the amount of accumulating trash, as well as the safety of the overpass due to the occupants digging into the slope.

Doug Wilson, bridge manager with the ministry, said their efforts to clear the site were partly necessary due to complaints from the public and the City of Abbotsford.

The ministry previously said that an inspection showed that there were no threats to the structural in-

Crews will restore the stability of the slope, which will then be covered by rocks.

The ministry, along with the Abbotsford bike patrol, has been communicating with the people in the camp over the past several months, letting them know the clean-up was coming and if they didn’t move they’d be charged with trespassing.

Wilson said service agencies offered alternate shelter for those in the camp.

People found at the site in future will be charged with trespassing, said Wilson.

The other side of the overpass, off Lonzo Road, will also be cleaned up, he said.

The newly redeveloped Kinghaven Treatment Centre, which opened on Friday, will receive an additional $1 million in provincial funding for a new pilot project to help men reintegrate into the community.

The $5 million treatment centre, for men at-risk of homelessness due to substance use, replaces the original 58-bed centre on the same site on King Road. With the redevelopment, the capacity has increased to accommodate 62 men.

The centre is operated by the Kinghaven Peardonville House Society and originally opened in 1970. In addition to providing detox and transitional living at the site, the men can move on to the George Schmidt

Gerry Palmer, board chair of the society, said dealing with addictions is one of the most serious social issues, and the centre is a “small part of dealing with a huge problem.”

He said the new facility is replacing one that was “well past its best-before date.”

Malcolm Strybos, a former resident at Kinghaven who now works for the society, said he had come from prison and completed the 70-day program. He said he really needed the support he received while in treatment and slowly worked back into the community.

“I started succeeding in life again,” he said, adding that he once again got to be a father to his children.

Milt Walker, executive director of the society, said that all the men who come through Kinghaven can be like Strybos if they want to.

He praised the centre’s staff, adding that because of them, people can live productive lives.

Woman of the Year Kelly Chahal chosen for Myrtle Evertt award Kelly Chahal was named the recipient of the Myrtle Evertt Woman of the Year Award on Thursday night.

The award is sponsored by the Business and Professional Women’s Club of Abbotsford and was presented during a ceremony at the Phoenix Lounge.

Chahal is an Abbotsford city councillor who has volunteered with the Fraser Valley Indo Canadian Business Association and is a probation officer specializing in the supervision of sex offenders and high-risk cases.

She is also a director with the advisory committee for the Centre for Indo-Canadian Studies.

Four other women were nominated for the award: Brenda Falk, a city councillor and owner of Tanglebank Gardens; Deb Lowell, media spokesperson

Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond, the province’s Representative for Children and Youth, said British Columbia has a “dramatic shortage of therapy supports.”

From diagnosis to treatment, “every single part of that process needs to improve,” Turpel-Lafond told The News. She said she frequently comes away “heartbroken” from meetings with such families.

“The kids are bounced around. They’re so distressed because they can’t navigate the system.”

Families wait too long for diagnoses, she said, and time is wasted that could otherwise be used to treat the illnesses or provide behavioral training to allow the child to cope with a disorder.

The current system, she said, is a “mishmash of programs,” some of which work well but aren’t deployed across the province because of a lack of leadership. Turpel-Lafond worries that frustrated and desperate parents will increasingly turn to private care, removing some of the pressure from the public system, but also siphoning professional resources while creating a two-tiered environment.

TTT Life remains a struggle for Amanda, who quit her job because Adam was unable to attend more than two hours of school a day. After three years of such struggle, Amanda pulled Adam from school to homeschool him. It has become clear that she’ll never have the normal family she once envisioned.

For one, she won’t leave Adam, now 10, alone with his seven-year-old brother after seeing him put his hands around the younger boy’s throat after being touched without warning.

At the same time, she sees wonderful things in her son. Beyond the outbursts, Adam loves his little brother, and will speak up for him when he’s sad.

And while he might not be able to memorize the alphabet, he is a math whiz who dreams of becoming a computer scientist.

TTT Meanwhile, Karen has increased her activism.

She has spoken to school districts and has created a group she calls Champions for Community Mental Wellness to help other parents navigate the system.

Her child’s autism diagnosis means she and her husband now receive $6,000 a year for support services. After spending thousands of the family’s own money, having funding for behavioral interventionists, occupational therapists, counselling and other care helps significantly.

But that doesn’t solve all the problems. Although the government provides funding to schools for students with issues like autism, Karen pulled her son from class earlier this year, citing a lack of support, resources and understanding.

Her husband has a good job, and she feels lucky to be able to stay at home. “What about the single parent that can’t leave work?” she asks.

Karen knows a mother in Chilliwack who left a well-paying job and now subsists on government assistance in order to care for a child who was no longer welcome at school.

TTT Theresa’s family life also remains tough, but at least some things are improving.

After a torturous kindergarten year, and after being diagnosed with ADHD and destructive behaviour disorder, Ben was admitted to the social development program at Blue Jay elementary.

“It saved our lives,” Theresa said. The program caters to kids with mental disorders and is run by specialized teachers. Ben spends part of his time in a regular classroom, and the rest in the social development space, which features an attached “calm down” room for kids having an outburst.

“At Blue Jay, those teachers are amazing. They’re actually involved in my child’s mental health.

“They’re providing so much more than a school experience.”

But one day, Ben will leave Blue Jay and enter middle school. So, late at night, Theresa will be on the internet, trying to learn more about her child’s “different kind of brain” while trying to untangle the web of programs offered.

“I remind myself: He is trying at the same time I am. He is trying as hard as he can.”

Traffic snarls not my idea of long weekend Mark

There in the freeway median near the Cole Road off-ramp was a rollover, decorated with police tape. The accident occurred at about 1:30 p.m. At 5, according to the radio, eastbound traffic was still at a stop-and-go crawl all the way west to 232nd Street in Langley ... all because lookyloos had to check out the wreck.

A flashing light, someone changing a tire on the shoulder or even a coyote standing in a field is enough to put weekend getaway journeys on interminable delay as drivers rubberneck.

Invariably, as traffic slows, an unattentive driver, on the phone or texting or daydreaming at speed, rams another vehicle and even more prolonged traffic chaos ensues.

On Friday, apparently all eastbound routes: Fraser Highway, Huntingdon Road, 58th Avenue and others were jammed as formerly happy travellers tried to avoid the freeway snarl, resulting of course in equally slow going regardless of route chosen.

And it all happened again Monday morning. Freeway closed at almost the same spot due to a rollover, Parallel Roads jammed as homeward-bound holidayers avoided the blockade.

All that time wasted, whining kids in the back seat, vast amounts of fuel burned at idle . . . no thanks, I’m just happy to stay at home.

However I do feel for those who try to make the most of a weekend, and who want to get out of town with their family to enjoy the magnificence of what B.C. offers. I just don’t understand why

so many have to slow down for no other reason than morbid curiosity. I will confess that I too rubberneck, I just do it at speed, which admittedly, may also have its issues.

Thankfully, I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to arrange my time so that my “long weekends” can be scheduled for

garden beds, with more on the way.

Fast as I could build them, and fill with dirt, they were planted with all manner of future produce. I can just imagine the bounty to come – all at once. I’m sure we’ll be giving away vast quantities of squash, beets, carrots and almost anything else that can be grown in our climate.

Not only will there be too much to eat ourselves, I can assure you that each beet and carrot will, due to the purchase of dirt, lumber, screws, wire (in what will be a fruitless effort to keep out the rabbits), cost remarkably more than it would be to buy from even the most thrifty of grocery stores.

On the other hand, we will know where it comes from, pesticide-free.

And, I am repeatedly told, it is fun to watch it grow, and harvest fresh from the garden.

Part of the problem, or part of the solution

The recent article about homelessness May 1 got my attention, and I feel compelled to respond in favour of Medicine Hat’s mayor, Ted Clugston.

With so much negativity regarding the tent villages that are springing up everywhere including Abbotsford, the model that has been used in Medicine Hat is a refreshing and positive alternative.

I am fully behind people retaining their dignity in hard times and a community that shows their concern for the welfare and safety of all its citizens, rather than snubbing our noses at the homeless.

Having never been in their position and never hope to be, how would we feel if that was us that we heard our community talking about?

Not all homeless are drug addicts (although many are) or have mental issues, (although many do). Many if not all are not there as a first choice, but as a last resort.

We as their community should be concerned that people are finding themselves without a safe place to live a home.

The April 2014 issue of the magazine Mother Jones tells the story of what Utah did to help people in the same situations that Mayor Clugston used – give them a place to live. They chose to provide individuals a place to live under a controlled setting and offer help as needed.

The positive outcomes of sobriety and stability were overcome. It was because of the housing arrangements that had been supplied. This model has a high success

rate in people recovering from mental issues, and stability for individuals to still have a place to live for many years after their initial set-up. The cost for health-related treatments, emergency services costs and the burden of health care by frequent hospitals visits were dramatically reduced.

Utah’s model has moved into other cities like Seattle, Portland, Maine, and in California.

It is my belief that as a community we can be part of the problem or part of the solution. With the examples of Medicine Hat, and cities in the U.S. using the model of housing first with its many success stories, maybe we should embrace a proven method as well.

Naomi Hughlett has been named the winner of the 2015 Total Makeover Challenge presented by Shape Your World Society.

Hughlett was announced last Wednesday as the winner during the final segment of the three-phase contest.

The last phase was a fashion show at the Phoenix Lounge, featuring the 10 finalists.

The fitness, health and beauty challenge began in January with 30 participants.

At the end of the first segment on Feb. 25, the public was invited to vote for their favourite challenger, with public and sponsor voting counting as 50 per cent of the value for choosing the next round of challengers.

The other half was based on weight loss, inch loss, program participation, attitude, leadership and other mini challenges.

Twenty participants advanced to the next segment, which ran from Feb. 26 to April 8. This was followed by a period of online voting on the Abbotsford News’ website and the naming of the 10 finalists. Big ideas for Abbotsford’s future Community plan update sets out seven key concepts Alex BUTLER Abbotsford News

As Abbotsford plans for its future, the focus will be on seven key concepts: create a city centre; establish distinct neighbourhoods; make walking, cycling and transit delightful; design places for people; foster natural beauty; enhance agricultural integrity; and, finally, make it work.

Those are the big ideas that came out of the second stage of Abbotsforward, the city’s official community plan (OCP) update, following community consultations that included more than 4,000 interactions with residents.

The OCP is a document that guides decision-making on

growth and development in a city.

Brent Toderian, the consultant on the OCP project, spoke to council last Monday about the various ideas, but emphasized that the seventh idea – make it work – is different than the rest.

He said implementation of the plan is the most important part, adding that plan itself states that it “will not sit on a shelf collecting dust.” While this is not typical language for such a plan, it is indicative of the message they want to send, he said.

Toderian said things are being done differently to send a strong message about how “when this plan is challenged – which we all know it will be – that both council, staff and the

community are prepared to stand up and fight for the plan to be achieved and followed and respected.”

He said the first challenge will be how council addresses the projects that are being considered by the city now, as it will impact how things develop in the future.

Abbotsforward staff will be out in the community over the summer to share the ideas through a summer fair and neighbourhood walks, and in the fall to receive input for developing growth scenarios through more road shows, citizen circles, and stakeholder workshops.

The decision to adopt, and the more difficult decision to give a child up for adoption, are filled with emotions. In situations where one member of the family is adopting the child of another family member, this can be an even more stressful and emotional situation, because the parties all know each other and are very close to each other.

Fortunately, the legal process for these “familial” adoptions is relatively straightforward, and with the help of an experienced adoption lawyer, Sheri finalizing the adoption can go smoothly.

Let’s take the hypothetical case of Mr. and Mrs. Blue. The Blues have wanted a child of their own for years, but are not able to have children of their own.

Mrs. Blue’s younger sister is Ms. Brown. Ms. Brown recently found out that she is pregnant with a girl. It was unplanned. She is young and single, and does not feel she can adequately provide for her child.

Ms. Brown has decided her child would have a better life if she put her up for adoption after she is born, and thus advised her sister.

The Blues discussed the option of adopting Ms. Brown’s unborn baby. Before approaching her to discuss their wishes, the Blues made the decision to contact a local adoption lawyer. The Blues met with their lawyer and learned that familial adoptions happen quite often in situations such as theirs, and that with the birth parents’ consent, the adoption process could be quite simple. They were told that adopting parents have an obligation to use their best efforts to locate the Sale ends Monday, June 1st

birth parents in order to obtain their consent. If they are unable to locate one of the parents after making a reasonable attempt to do so, they could apply to a court for an order dispensing with consent.

The Blues now felt ready to speak with Ms. Brown about the potential for adoption.

After much consideration, Ms. Brown agreed to consent to the adoption of her baby to the Blues, w h o m she knew would give her a loving home.

Ms. Brown Yakashiro p r o v i d e d the Blues with the name and address of the baby’s father, so they could get his consent too. The Blues went back to their lawyer, who began the necessary preparation of documents that they were then able to provide to both parents for their signature, consenting to the adoption.

Shortly thereafter Ms. Brown gave birth to a healthy baby girl. The Blues decided to name her “Hope.”

Only a few short months later, after the necessary child care reports were completed, the Blues received the call they had been waiting for; the Adoption Order had been granted and they were now the legal guardians of baby Hope.

One of those sentries guarding the tomb is a local sailor from Abbotsford, Leading Seaman Rebecca Charlesworth.

Charlesworth is a member of ship’s company of Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Regina, which is homeported in Esquimalt.

“I partially grew up on a sailboat, loved the water and was inspired by the Royal Canadian Navy,” said Charlesworth, who has now been in the navy over 13 years.

In that time she has earned the General Campaign Start – South West Asia for service in Afghanistan, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, NATO Article 5 medal and the Canadian Forces’ Decoration (CD). She has deployed around the globe on various military exercises and operations.

“To represent the past, current and future Canadian Armed Forces with honour and respect for the fallen, here at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, is a great privilege,” she said.

When not in uniform, Charlesworth volunteers with Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue as well as Royal Canadian Sea Cadets.

Susan Antak honoured

A retired Abbotsford educator received this year’s Education Advocate Award from the Association of BC Deans of Education (ABCDE) earlier this month.

Susan Antak worked as a principal at the Abbotsford School District and teacher for more than 30 years.

She has a long record of excellence in leadership, mentorship, and community engagement.

Antak began her teaching career as a primary and music teacher in the Nelson School District in the late 1970s. In 1989, she moved to the Abbotsford School District. She volunteered on numerous organizations, such as the Local Learning Resources Committee, Early Literacy Committee, and Abbotsford Family

Mountain biker crashes Just before 9 p.m on Saturday, emergency crews were called to assist an injured mountain biker on Sumas Mountain.

Assistant Fire Chief Craig Bird said the mountain biker crashed on a downhill O E VID INE ride.

Crews did precautionary medical procedures and the biker’s condition was stable, Bird said.

He said about once or twice a month, crews are called to Sumas Mountain to assist mountain bikers.

He said if bikers can provide their GPS coordinates it is helpful.

Antak took on the role as an administrator in 1995. As principal at Harry Sayers elementary school in 2002, she worked to engage a school community that served 500 students, mostly made up of new Canadians.

Antak brought in translators to connect with parents and babysitters to encourage parent participation at the school. This helped staff learn how to better support students.

Antak also helped develop a family centre for preschoolers and their caregivers and a preschool program that ran out of the school.

As a district principal, Antak supported and mentored teachers as well, and continues to do that in retirement.

“She has extended her involvement with UFV’s Teacher Education Department by becoming a faculty mentor,” said Sheryl MacMath, department head of teacher education at UFV, who helped nominate Antak for the award.

“Each year, she mentors teacher candidates during their field experience.

Candidates gush over Susan, commenting on her unyielding support, tremendous expertise, and bubbly enthusiasm.”

The ABCDE Awards were given out Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops.

Estate Planning: where there’s a Will there’s a way Building a legacy begins with the first dollar saved and the first good deed, and is an effort that takes a lifetime. We are remembered by how we choose to live and how we support the friends, families and organizations that are important to us.

Estate planning is one of the most important steps you can take to provide for your family and loved ones in the event of your death or other unexpected event. When done properly, there will be a smooth transfer of your assets to those you wish to benefit. This can save your family money and heartache.

From a legal perspective, a testamentary Will allows us to control how our assets are distributed upon death and choose an executor who we trust to distribute them. A Will may contain charitable gifts, backup executors, and provisions that hold money in discretionary trusts until our children or grandchildren are responsible enough to invest or save their money.

Estate plans should be reviewed regularly to account for changes in legislation or personal circumstances. For instance, in 2014, the BC government passed significant changes to how Wills are interpreted and how estates are administered, affecting those who die without a Will, when Wills are revoked, and what happens if family members predecease you. This year, Ottawa changed how certain testamentary trusts are taxed and charitable receipts are allocated.

As a lawyer with an estate planning practice, I remind my clients that proper estate planning is more than a Will. It also involves looking at the way ownership of your assets is organized, reviewing your life insurance policies, the beneficiaries of your RRSPs, and your employment pension plans for ways to eliminate probate fees. For those who own businesses such as farming corporations, there may be additional savings from separating assets into more than one Will.

Estate planning should also include incapacity planning. For instance, a husband and wife who own a home together should consider an enduring Power of Attorney for each other, as both owners need to be capable of signing documents to sell or refinance a property. Abbotsford Hospice is busy with today’s challenges, constructing the Holmberg House, a new 10-bed adult hospice located at the corner of Marshall and Gladwin near the Abbotsford Regional Hospital. But its leaders are busy thinking about tomorrow.

Those who have been thrifty all of their lives appreciate the idea of an endowment fund because the capital remains untouched while the income is distributed annually. If the fund is established during their lifetime, they can choose annually what they want to support and involve their children in those decisions, teaching them the importance of giving back

to their community.

Some donors create legacy funds through their estates. “After taking care of their loved ones they leave an estate gift to create a donor fund with ACF where they can designate which charity or charities will receive the annual disbursement from their fund. By making these plans in advance, ACF can work with donors to create a fund agreement that will ensure their philanthropic wishes will be fulfilled”, said McAlevy.

Mission Community Foundation Mission has many reasons to be considered special. Not the least of these is the generosity of its citizens. Mission Community Foundation is now 27 years old and was conceived as a result of a bequest from Margaret Erskine.

Since that time, we have grown to the point that over 1.2 million dollars has been given to deserving graduating students for post-secondary studies and grants to local charitable organizations now total almost $460,000.

We are proud of the fact that all our donations are held in perpetuity and that only the interest derived from investments goes to benefit the citizens of our community. Only 1.5% is used to defray administrative costs and we welcome donations from anyone wishing to augment one of our 82 different funds, or who wants to

start a new fund; no amount is too small.

Our current activities include the sponsorship of an evening of free music every year at the Twilight Concert in the Park series held in Heritage Park every summer. Also, this coming November, we plan on celebrating Philanthropy Day by having a pop-up store on Main Street. Our intention is to give away as much gently used clothing as we can collect and pass it on to those in need.

Firing up the backyard

By Kerry Vital Outdoor spaces are becoming nearly as important as indoor spaces when it comes to relaxing in your home.

Whether it’s warm or there’s a chill in the air, you can spend more time outside with family and friends when you install a backyard Àre pit.

When you think Àre pit, you might think of a campÀre reminiscent of family camping trips as a child. But outdoor Àre features have come a long way in recent years.

“We’re seeing a trend towards the minimalist look,” says Catherine Traschenko of Dreamcast Design and Pro-

duction. “Concrete is getting quite popular due to that inÁuence.”

Sleek and modern backyards are complemented by an equally sleek Àre bowl. Other options include the traditional Àre pits, and square or rectangular Àre tables.

Concrete comes in a range of colours, from the classic grey to a white, taupe or charcoal shade.

“When you’re choosing a colour you need to consider

how much maintenance you want to do,” says Traschenko.

“With a light colour or a dark colour, you will need to clean it more often because it shows more dirt. A midtone is best.”

Other popular materials for outdoor Àre pits include stone, brick and old-fashioned copper and other metals.

Fire pits can be fuelled by natural gas, propane, wood or a clean-burning gel.

A Àreplace professional will be able to advise what the best

option is for your space.

“It’s important to ensure you have enough clearance to the ceiling and to the nearby walls,” says Traschenko.

“Every Àre pit will have regulations on clearances, and it should be CSA-approved.”

It’s also important to keep anything Áammable such as foliage away from the Àre pit.

A stone or brick surround is a great and safe option, especially in drier climates. Builtin seating will keep people from getting too close to the Àre pit.

If you’re looking for a natural gas Àre pit, you will have to keep where the hook-up is in mind. If the hook-up isn’t right beside where you plan to put the Àre pit, you might need to take a hose into account, Traschenko points out.

“You also need to keep in mind what you plan to use it for,” she says. “Do you want to eat at it, or just use it for warmth?”

If you plan to use it for warmth, choose a Àre pit that is lower to the ground.

“Heat rises,” Traschenko says. “The lower the Àre pit, the warmer you will feel.”

Maintenance is an important consideration for anything that stays outdoors.

“At the start of the season, vacuum out any debris from the burner area, and make sure there are no leaves clogging it up,” says Traschenko.

“Wipe the Àre pit and remove anything that’s inside it.”

Keeping your Àre pit covered when it’s not in use prevents dirt, leaves and other debris from getting inside it and forcing you to clean it more often, so Traschenko always suggests that customers

The legendary coach who started W.J. Mouat’s football program in 1987 is preparing to head back to university.

Denis Kelly, who has led the Hawks to three provincial championships since he helped to start the football program at Mouat 28 years ago, has been named associate offensive co-ordinator of Simon Fraser University’s Clan football team.

After a storied high school coaching career, Kelly will now be working with new offensive co-ordinator, Joe Paopao, focusing on quarterbacks, receivers

and running backs at SFU. The new job came courtesy of a telephone call from SFU’s new head coach Kelly Bates, a former B.C. Lions player and coach, to join his staff.

Kelly knew Bates from working at various high school football camps over the years and had also worked at B.C. Lions camps with Paopao, a former CFL quarterback and longtime CFL coach.

“The timing was good,” said Kelly, who was winding up his teaching career.

Kelly coached at SFU full-time from 1980 to 1981.

“This is a good opportunity to keep coaching,” he said.

Open to all ages, however 18 and under must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

SFU is Kelly’s alma mater. He played for SFU coaches Lorne Davies and Tom Walker and was the back-up quarterback to Lui Passaglia in his senior season in 1972. Kelly began his teaching career at Vancouver College and then, after a stint at Notre Dame, he arrived at W.J. Mouat to start a football program at the school in 1987.

He was also part of a run of success for the TWU-affiliated Fraser Valley Volleyball Club (FVVC) U18 Blitz girls team, which won seven straight B.C. club championships between 2004 and 2010.

“I’m just so thankful that UFV is willing to take a chance on me and give me my first opportunity as a head coach at the college level,” Gilray said. “It’s my goal to get UFV back to that national championship level that they’ve been at previously.”

The Grade 8 boys 200-metre hurdles saw ACS’s David Williamson and Connor Piers finish

second and third, respectively.

That race was won

by Mouat’s squad. The school also finished second in the senior boys 4x100 event.

W.J. Mouat and Abbotsford Christian School (ACS) both claimed team titles at the Fraser Valley High School Track and Field Championships, which were held last week at Rotary Stadium.

Mouat finished first place in the combined team senior division class, besting Lord Tweedsmuir and Maple Ridge secondary.

The school also won the male senior division crown and finished second in the male junior division class.

ACS claimed top spot by just one point in the Grade 8 combined team class. In the Grade 8 female and male classes, ACS finished second and third, respectively.

Like the first two days of competition (for results, see the May 15 edition of The News), the final day of competition on Thursday saw several local athletes claim top spots.

Friesen commits to UFV

University of the Fraser Valley men’s volleyball coach Kyle Donen has added four high school standouts to his roster, including Mennonite Educational Institute left side Ben Friesen.

All four players had success at the provincial level, with Friesen winning provincial AA gold with the Eagles last season.

“These players have definitely shown their ability to win,” Donen enthused. “Not only do they know how to win, but they know how to lead by example on the floor.”

Friesen’s high school career included an AA provincial bronze medal in 2013 in addition to the gold medal last season. He also won a national club championship in 2010 with the Fraser Valley Volleyball Club, and was a tournament allstar at the 2012 B.C. Junior Boys Christian Schools Championship.

Friesen, who played for Donen this spring with the Orangemen Volleyball Club, is enrolling in general studies at UFV. “Ben has been a great leader for our club team all season long and I think his abilities will transfer well to the college game,” Donen said.

“His overall ball control is exceptional, and that will allow him to compete at various positions on our team. I’m really excited to see Ben grow as a player and take his game to new heights this coming season.”

Friesen said he’s ready to do whatever it takes to excel at the college level.

“I’m looking forward to playing with a great group of players and coaches that are going to help me improve and find my role on the team,” he said. “If that’s being the best freshman benchwarmer the team has ever seen, bring it on.”

Cumiskey in for Chicago Abbotsford’s Kyle Cumiskey was set to draw into the Chicago Blackhawks lineup Tuesday night for his first National Hockey League playoff game in five years.

Cumiskey, who signed with the Blackhawks last summer after playing two seasons in Sweden, spent most of this year with Chicago’s AHL affiliate. He was called up for the team’s playoff run, but had yet to play a game. The result of the

He is predeceased by his parents, Frederick and Madeline Kvaas, his infant brother George, his brothers Sonny in 2013, Danny in 2011, Alvin in 2007 and his sister Norma Rosk in 2010. He leaves behind loved ones to mourn his passing, his loving wife of 56 years Margaret, children Tim (Joanne), Christine (Wayne), Patricia and Bradley; 9 grandchildren, Ryan, Samantha, Kyle, Natalie, Nathan, Greg, Daniela, Sarah and Scott; 3 great grandchildren Ethan, Gabbi and Gay; sisters Dorothy, Thelma, Fia, Reta, Amy, Leona and Trudean; Brothers Gordon and Douglas, many nieces and nephews and their extended families and friends.

Passed peacefully into God’s hands at Abbotsford Regional Hospital on Sunday, May 10th with some of his close friends by his side. Gus is survived by his sister Joan (Joe) Mitosinka of Lorette, MB and brother Leonard (Evelyn) of St. Vital, MB. Gus was born on June 7, 1929 in St. Boniface, Manitoba to Edward and Julia Tytgat. Gus was the second of 7 siblings.

He grew up in St. Boniface, MB until the age of 16 when he moved to Vancouver, BC. He loved the west coast weather and never moved back to Manitoba but returned to visit family for significant birthdays and events and they also came to Vancouver to see him.

Gus was a shoe-shiner in Vancouver known for his great service at the corner of Granville and Robson and did that until he retired in his early 60’s to Abbotsford, BC. Here he was involved in a 12-step program where he made some dearly loved friends. Retiring for Gus meant riding 30-40 km. a day on his bicycle collecting bottles to supplement his income. This brought him much joy and also was how God enlarged his community of friends which all loved and enjoyed him. After attending at least 3 full cycles of the church program “Alpha” (no doubt he loved the dinners which were provided), in his own words Gus said, “I couldn’t resist the love of God any longer and I had to give my life to Him.” Gus was known as someone always looking to help out a friend, he loved to laugh and had a twinkle in his eye and knew how to work hard.

Health issues forced Gus to stop riding his bike when he was in his early 80’s and this adjustment was very tough on him. He longed to be with Jesus and now he has his heart’s desire.

Memorial Service will be held Friday, June 12th at 10:00 am at South Abbotsford Church in the gym, 32424 Huntingdon Road. Gus was predeceased by his parents, his sister Marie Letkeman, his brothers Victor and Bob and adopted sister Yvonne.
