The card tucked into the white roses summarizes the way many people felt about Dakota Leslie: “I have never had a friend so supportive and trustworthy. You will never be forgotten, my brother.”

The note is part of a growing roadside memorial on the northeast corner of Marshall and McCallum roads, where bright flowers and heartfelt messages mark the area where Leslie was struck by a vehicle last Thursday night. The 19-year-old died in hospital a few hours later.

Tributes have been flooding social media ever since.

Leslie was a volunteer show host and DJ with The Generation Z Show on Abbotsford’s CiVL radio, which is based at the University of the Fraser Valley.

Leslie’s co-host Andy Lee said Leslie was “the greatest friend and show host I could ever ask for.

The 20-year-old driver remained on the scene and has co-operated with police, MacDonald said.

A longboard was found at the scene, near Leslie, but it has not yet been confirmed whether he was riding it at the time of the crash, whether he was using the crosswalk, and who had the right of way.

Leslie was last seen at a downtown Abbotsford business at 9:15 p.m. on Thursday, April 30, and police are asking for any witnesses that might have seen him from that time until the crash at 9:41 p.m.

MacDonald said police are also asking to hear from drivers/ passengers who passed through the intersection of McCallum and Marshall roads at or just before the collision.

Any witnesses to the collision who have not yet spoken with police are asked to contact the Abbotsford Police Department at 604-859-5225 or text abbypd (222973).

Meanwhile, a friend of the Leslie family has set up a fundraising page on the GoFundMe website to raise money for Leslie’s funeral.

The page explains that the family has endured several losses in the last eight months – including the deaths of Leslie’s uncle and grandmother – and has also faced some financial burdens.

“This fund will help make it possible to give Dakota the memorial he deserves,” the page states, adding that the money will also help with the remaining costs from the losses of the other family members.

He taught me to have patience and compassion, for he lived by his heart while I lived by what my brain told me,” posted Lee, who left the station earlier last week to continue his studies on the East Coast.

CiVL station manager Aaron Levy told The News that Leslie was “one of the youngest and most enthusiastic volunteers at CiVL,” and the station is in shock over his passing.

“You can recruit to the ends of the world, but you can’t solicit, train or learn the kind of creativity, excitement and sense of community that Dakota is already being remembered and missed for,” Levy said.

Leslie, the youngest of four siblings, was a 2014 graduate of Abbotsford Senior Secondary. He was also a volunteer for the Excalibur Party, which had candidates running in Abbotsford and Mission in the 2013 provincial election.

A message posted online from the BC Excalibur party said Leslie was a “caring and compassionate individual” and a “bright and caring young man.”

“He lived by his conscience and the things he believed in,” the message stated.

Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said the collision that killed Leslie is still under investigation.

The incident took place at about 9:40 p.m., when Leslie was struck by a Honda Accord that had been travelling west on Marshall Road and was making a right turn onto McCallum.

Break-ins continue to plague Townline neighbourhoods A family describes their safety concerns Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

The woman had just returned home from work and was having a shower when she heard the doorbell ring at her west Abbotsford home.

She ignored the sound, but when she came downstairs, she spotted a car in her driveway with the driver still inside. She ventured outside, just in time to see a second man punching numbers into the keypad of her garage.

“Who are you? What are you doing?!” the woman asked.

The man stopped and, without saying a word, got into the passenger seat of the vehicle, and the car pulled away.

Now, the woman’s daughter, Preet, said she and her family are unnerved about having been the potential victims of a break-and-enter in an area that has experienced a rash of them since last fall.

The latest figures from the Abbotsford Police Department indicate there have been 33 home break-ins in the Townline Road and Blueridge Drive area from Nov. 5 to April 26.

Const. Ian MacDonald said the suspects have targeted mainly jewelry, cash and laptop computers. In one of the thefts, the culprits made off with $50,000 in jewelry, electronics and foreign currency.

They have mainly entered the homes by prying open locked windows at a time when the residences are unoccupied.

MacDonald said the culprits likely have been observing the routines of residents in the area before targeting specific homes.

That concerns Preet and her family. They believe the thieves had been watching their home for days, learning their routines and observing the code they were entering on their garage keypad.

The incident took place on the one night of the week that the family usually isn’t home, but Preet’s mom came home from work two hours early that day.

Preet said they are concerned that if the suspects had entered the home and been startled by her mom, they might have harmed her.

The family now ensures there is someone home at all times, and they have installed video surveillance cameras on their property.

“We’re so scared … It’s very, very unnerving,” she said.

The family also initially had concerns that when calling to report the incident to police, they were not given a file number nor did anyone follow up with them. Police have since looked into their concerns, and MacDonald said it was discovered that an error in judgment by a call-taker resulted in the information not being forwarded to investigators.

Police have since made contact with the family, and Preet’s mom has provided suspect and vehicle descriptions, which police are not releasing at this time, to avoid hindering the investigation.

Day and night patrols have been stepped up in the area.

Residents are asked to continue to report suspicious activity by calling the Abbotsford Police Department at 604-859-5225 or texting abbypd (222973).

Education struggle goes on Many parents were probably hopeful that last week’s B.C. Court of Appeal decision was the last they’d hear about the provincial government’s seemingly never-ending battle with the BC Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) over the removal of class size and special-needs support formulas from classrooms.

Wishful thinking...

In a judgment Thursday, four of five appeal court judges found that the province did not infringe on the constitutional rights of teachers to bargain working conditions.

It was a stinging rebuke to the teachers’ union, finding that the government has the authority to set class sizes and special needs support in public schools, and that it didn’t bargain in bad faith.

Regardless, the BCTF said it will try to take the case to the Supreme Court of Canada, and the historical shoving match between Victoria and the BCTF will see yet another chapter.

While no one would argue that class sizes should be left to expand without limits, and while support for specialneeds children is vital to give those kids the tools they need to become healthy adults, both issues should not be decided by unions, contract negotiators, and subsequently, lawyers and courts.

These issues are at the core of education policy and the type of learning environments provided for our children – in context of what is reasonable, affordable and sustainable over the long-term.

To take this out of the hands of the public’s elected representatives – whatever their political stripes – and expect the courts to be the champions of kids through an interpretation of law, isn’t good for anyone.

The public has the ability to express and test its education values as a priority at the ballot box.

It’s how democracy should work.

Other Hand My introduction to federal politics in the Fraser Valley came in the spring of 1968 when, in the parking lot adjacent to the Chilliwack Progress, I watched Liberal candidate Jerry Pringle suddenly flip over and walk on his hands!

I had just finished interviewing him and incumbent candidate Rev. Alex B. Patterson in the office and continued outside with them to chat when Pringle surprised us. His antics brought a smile to my face (and my only non-Conservative federal vote), and a dour look from the staid Alex B., at that time the last sitting member of the federal Social Credit Party of Canada.

Not only was Pringle bringing vitality and excitement to Valley politics, he was riding on the wave of Trudeau-mania that on June 25, 1968 swept him and Pierre Trudeau’s Liberals to power. It also put the final nail in

the coffin of the federal Socreds.

For the 1972 federal election, Patterson re-invented himself as a Progressive Conservative, and once again found himself back in Ottawa.

His retirement 12 years later was cause for an exciting and, I’m certain, most lengthy candidate nomination “convention” in the Valley’s history. Among the half-dozen or so mostly well-known long-term residents contending to be the candidate were Abbotsford Mayor George Ferguson and Eaton’s store manager Ross Belsher. It was a spirited event with relatively large contingents supporting each contender amassed in Chilliwack’s Evergreen Hall (our riding then was known as Fraser Valley East).

What made that convention exciting was that voters cast their ballot for one candidate, and following the count, the low man on the ticket was dropped and subsequent votes were held, knocking off candidates until the last ballot.

The voting took all day – the number of voters declining each time their favourite was dropped. The final late-evening battle for votes was between Ferguson and Belsher, the latter’s solid support from members of the Sevenoaks Alliance Church, many having

been bused to the venue with no ability of returning to Abbotsford until the last ballot was counted, carrying the day.

While Blesher’s bloc support was, in the day, a bit controversial for Valley politics, its legitimacy was not contested.

It’ll be interesting to see if Gurmant can convert this win into electoral success this October. a ballot for the Conservative candidate for the new riding of Mission-Matsqui-North to Alaska (well, at least to Ashcroft and beyond).

The Best Western in Mission where the balloting occurred was packed and it was clear in my mind, even before I voted, who the winner would be.

When I first learned that Gurmant Grewal, denied candidacy by the Conservatives in Cloverdale-Langley City this past November, was promoting his son in this riding, I knew

his tactics of gathering together huge membership numbers would occur here, too.

And the numbers don’t deny it: 3,841 total memberships, 1,864 eventual voters on Saturday, close to 1,000 votes putting his son over the top on first count.

I’ve received many emails and calls over the past couple of days alleging all sorts of things: interloper-candidate, mass membership purchases, voting by non-residents – none substantiated.

What can be confirmed is that unless you are pushed by highly motivated people, most don’t join political parties nor are willing to spend the time participating in candidate selection.

Gurmant understands that. He first got himself elected, then his wife – for a time, until allegations of scandal caused him to step aside – the only husband-wife team to ever sit in the House of Commons. Now he has helped his son attempt to be the first mother-son team of MPs in Ottawa.

I’ll be interested to see if Gurmant can convert this win into electoral success this October.

“You don’t treat homelessness with emergency shelters and hope to cure it.”

Those words were shared by Medicine Hat’s mayor at a recent forum at UFV. Medicine Hat is known as the city that solved homelessness, so perhaps we should pay some attention.

Another person sharing information is Soledad Vega. Below are two excerpts from Vega’s article, “Solving Vancouver’s homelessness problem through public health care,” Rabble.ca: “A study released in 2012 by Dr. Michael Krausz, a professor of psychiatry at UBC and the UBC Providence Leadership Chair, found that half the people who are homeless first found themselves without a home before they turned 25.

“Eighty-five per cent suffered some kind of emotional, physical or sexual abuse in their childhood, many of them while in foster care.

“The study also found that 93 per cent of all homeless people have a current mental disorder and 83 per cent exhibit a substance abuse disorder.

“Finding ways to provide the proper medical support for the most vulnerable will be far more productive than discussing this year’s statistics on street homelessness.”

Or we can hold tightly onto the status quo, label those on the street as “lazy,” and loudly begrudge the few services that are provided.

that all the lights were on, but no one even came to the door.

It would have been nice if you had come to let me know that you were not interested instead of being so complacent. It also would have been nice to meet my neighbours. To the two houses that did open their doors, I was able to meet those neighbours and we did have lovely conversations. Thank you for that.

Having had three brain tumors, including having to have radiation, I canvass for the Cancer Society every year as a way to give back, for them helping me so many years ago. I wear my daffodil proudly. Next time you see me wearing it, carrying the canvassing book, with my name tag, don’t you think it would be nice to open your door and at least say hi?

Two men were taken to hospital early Sunday morning after police received reports of an assault in progress in the 2400 block of Crescent Way. After 2:45 a.m., police arrived at a residence which had been contaminated with bear spray, said Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald.

Inside were a 55-year-old victim and a 25-yearold suspect who were both seriously injured.

“It looked like an altercation had taken place,” MacDonald said.

He said the 25-year-old had allegedly come to the home armed with bear spray, a replica hangun, a machete, bolt cutters and a hammer.

MacDonald said that before police e arrived, the suspect had been subdued by another occupant of the VIDEINOE home who assisted the 55-year-old.

The suspect did not live at the home.

Charges being considered against the 25-yearold include aggravated assault and assault with a weapon, among others.

The exact circumstances of the incident are not yet clear, as the 55-year-old is still in serious condition in hospital, recovering from a head injury.

“Oftentimes when we see these types of things, robbery is the motive,” MacDonald said, but added that police are still gathering evidence.

He said police officers had to wear gas masks to protect themselves from the bear spray and there was “quite a bit of mayhem” at the scene.

Sentenced after fleeing cops, crashing vehicle Incident took place on Vye Road in January Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

A man who fled from police and then crashed in a stolen vehicle in January of this year has been sentenced to 12 months in prison, followed by two years of probation.

Brian Robert Stephan, 29, of Chilliwack was sentenced Friday (May 1) in Abbotsford provincial court.

All charges were stayed against his coaccused, Stephanie Liane Glaister, 27.

The two faced a total of 17 charges after an incident that took place just after 2 a.m. on Jan. 5.

Police were stopping traffic due to downed trees and power lines, when a Toyota 4Runner that had been stopped on Short Road – south of Huntingdon/Vye Road between Gladwin and McCallum – abruptly turned around and sped away.

Police broadcast the vehicle’s description, and several minutes later, a report came in of a single-vehicle

crash in the 33800 block of Vye Road.

The SUV had crashed into a fire hydrant and power pole, but was unoccupied when police arrived.

Officers began looking for the driver and any passengers, and the crashed Toyota

was confirmed as having been stolen from Chilliwack.

Shortly after, a Ford Explorer drove by officers eastbound on Vye Road.

The Explorer had been stolen from a home in the 33900 block of Vye Road,

where residents had reported a break-in and the theft of their car keys.

The Explorer was stopped by a spike belt laid down my police.

Stephan pleaded guilty to two counts of theft of a motor vehicle and one count of

A man charged last year with sexual assault and committing an indecent act related to an incident at a bus stop has been sentenced in Abbotsford provincial court.

Amrik Kular, 43, has been placed on two years’ probation, and will not serve any jail time.

He was sentenced May 1 on two lesser counts of assault, to which he had previously pleaded guilty.

Kular was charged after an 18-year-old girl contacted police on July 26 to report that she had been waiting at a bus stop in the 2400 block of Montrose Avenue – in front of Abbotsford

The victim reported that the man wrapped his arms around her from the front and wouldn’t let go.

She was able to free herself, and the man then moved a short distance away and appeared to be exposing and touching himself.

Police arrested the man a short distance away from the scene, and announced two days later that Kular had been charged in relation to the incident.

He was subsequently charged with three further counts of breaching his bail conditions, but those charges were stayed at sentencing.

Involve Abbotsford provides information for non-profits On Saturday, May 9, the City of Abbotsford is hosting Involve Abbotsford, a free oneday symposium that will provide training and networking opportunities to help local non-profit sports, arts, and social services organizations build their capacity and skills and network with others in their industry.

Signy Wilson will be providing a keynote address and will be inspiring participants to help create cultures of engagement within organizations. In addition, Involve Abbotsford offers four different infor-

mative workshops by industry professionals.

The sessions have been tailored to meet the unique requirements of community organizations and nonprofit agencies.

Workshops include: Colette Squires, the power of program evaluation; Alison Martens, efficiency through continuous improvement; Bill Flitton, how to be

a council delegate; and special events 101 with Alanna Carmichael, Barb Roberts and Carla Soltis.

These workshops will provide important information for organizations in meeting strategic goals, and provide opportunity for wider engagement.

Participants can choose between workshops during the day,

enjoy a light lunch, and will have opportunities post-presentation for more specific advice and information from the presenters.

A lengthy labour dispute is over between Southern Railway of B.C. and its unionized employees.

A tentative agreement has been reached between the U.S.-owned firm and its more than 120 employees, who had been locked out since Jan. 5.

SRY employs 20 people in Abbotsford and operates a yard off Vye Road.

During the 114-day lockout Southern Railway managers ran the short line railway, which hauls cargo around the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley. The company and CUPE local 7000 representatives returned to the bargaining table March 30. Details were not released pending a ratification vote.

The lockout began after the union in December rejected a final contract offer of nearly 10 per cent in pay hikes spread over six years.

According to the expired collective agreement, Southern Railway current wages for regular employees range from $28.99 an hour for janitors to $36.07 for locomotive engineers and $38.01 for rail traffic controllers.

Members of CUPE local 7000 voted 68 per cent to ratify the new contract, which includes wage hikes totaling 10.5 per cent over seven years, while preserving or improving other benefits or working conditions.

Beautiful handmade vests, hats, baby blankets and booties cover the table at a meeting of a local knitting circle for immigrant women, as members admire one another’s work.

The group, run through Abbotsford Community Services (ACS) multicultural and immigrant services, brings together immigrant women in Abbotsford who take donated yarn and create unique, handcrafted projects that will be given back to others through the local food bank and hospital.

The group started meeting on Mondays in November of last year at ACS’s west Abbotsford offices.

Andrea Dykshoorn, co-ordinator of the ACS Community Connections program, said many immigrant women are often seen by society as “unskilled workers,” but when you look at their knitting abilities “it’s incredible.”

She said finding work is a matter of opportunity and can be difficult for immigrant women.

But through the knitting group, they get to use the skills they have to help others, as well as connect with the community and work on their English language proficiency.

Lawn bowling club sees 80th year Hosts annual season-opening event

The Jubilee Park Lawn Bowling Club began its 80th anniversary season on Wednesday, April 29 with its annual opening day.

Abbotsford Coun.

Patricia Ross, the city’s deputy mayor, rolled the first ball of the season.

The club, located at 2552 McCallum Rd., began in 1935 when a few residents got together and volunteered their time and equipment to construct a lawn bowling green.

In the beginning, the plot of ground was not part of Jubilee Park, so some brambles and brush had to be cleared to make a suitable area.

The club was originally known as the Abbotsford Lawn Bowling Club. It later became part of Jubilee Park and its name was changed in 1987.

Initially, there was just one green, but over time, it expanded to eight.

Ball hockey event supports Matthew’s House

A ball hockey tournament in May will help raise funds to support Matthew’s House, a respite home for families with children who have complex care needs.

Streets tournament will take place May 23 at Sevenoaks Shopping Centre in Abbotsford.

The four-on-four event will offer both recreational and competitive hockey games for everyone age seven

and older. Teams must have four to seven players.

The event is being organized by Chris Trendall and his dad, Les. “I’ve been involved with hockey my whole

life and thought it would be great to put on a tournament that anyone could participate in,” said Trendall, who works as a special education assistant at MEI school and is a hockey coach.

Volunteers sought for Cost of Eating project Are you interested in food security? Are you looking to gain some volunteer experience?

Fraser Health is looking for volunteers to help out with the 2015 Cost of Eating project.

The Cost of Eating is an advocacy tool that measures how much it costs to eat a healthy diet in different regions across B.C. The work involves going into selected grocery stores in Fraser Health communities and recording prices of specific food items.

Volunteers will choose which Fraser Health communities they wish to volunteer in.

Communities include anywhere from the Burnaby and Delta borders all the way east to Chilliwack and Hope.

Volunteers will need to be available for a training webinar on how to collect the data.

The actual pricing of the foods needs to be done between May 25 and June 5. Food costing at each store takes approximately one and a half to two hours. The total amount of time involved will depend on how many stores the volunteer chooses to cost. Volunteers may choose to work in pairs or alone.

Good skills to have: attention to detail, accuracy when collecting data, and having an interest in food.

Free dementia tele-workshop offered May 13 A free tele-workshop being offered by the Alzheimer Society of B.C. is designed to help families learn practical techniques for living with those who have Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias.

“Understanding Behaviour” runs Wednesday, May 13 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

The session will look at strategies to determine what

the person with dementia might be trying to communicate, and to find ways to decrease the occurrence of behaviours that are of concern and to respond in supportive ways.

Habitat for Humanity celebrated the opening of the new location for its ReStore this past weekend while raising money to help victims of last month’s earthquake in Nepal.

A barbecue, by donation, outside the new 20,000 sq. ft. shop – located at 31877 South Fraser Way – raised about $1,000 for Nepal.

The money will be sent to Habitat for Humanity’s international organization.

The new store is twice the size of the previous one on Abbotsford Way. Habitat for Humanity CEO Doug Rempel said the new space is “filled to the brim” with furniture, appliances and home building supplies.

“It took us about six weeks to move because we were moving and still running the store,” said Rempel. “It was a big job.”

“We receive donations from individuals as well as companies,” noted Rempel, who described the operation as a new and used building supplies store.

There is also a recycling program oper-

ating out of the store where people can drop off scrap metal.

“We separate it and, if there are appliances, we test them and sell them to raise money and help other organizations.”

All proceeds from the ReStore help support Habitat for Humanity projects.

Last year, the group

built a house on Farmer Road in Abbotsford and now Rempel is looking for land to build another affordable house, townhouse or apartment.

“We help build homes for low-income families that can’t get a traditional mortgage,” said Rempel. “We also help with home renovation projects for people who can’t afford to fix their home.”

Rempel said the projects can range from $1,000 to $15,000 in value and most of the work is done by volunteers. Sometimes professionals, like a certified electrician or plumber, are brought in when a volunteer is not available.

Since 2001, Habitat for Humanity has finished six homes and completed countless home renovation projects.

The price of pain and suffering? lawyers that their cases are only worth a certain amount, usually something less than $7,500. They will sometimes suggest that if an injury is categorized as “mild� or “moderate,� this is the maximum amount they can pay.  Unfortunately, a myth exists that suggests mild or moderate soft tissue injuries are governed by a chart or tariff kept by insurance companies. Nothing could be further from the truth. B.C. courts recognize that in dealing with awards of this nature, Doug it is impossible to develop a “tariff.� Awards will vary in each case to meet the specific circumstances of the individual case.

When I initially meet with new clients, I am often asked: “How much is my claim worth?� My response is that the assessment of damages is always a multi-faceted exercise. Before we can express any opinion, we need to see medical reports and obtain

If you are injured as a result of the fault or “negligence� of someone else, whether it be from a car accident, a slip and fall on some stairs or patio, or whatever, British Columbia law allows for recovery of any damages you may suffer as a result of those injuries. Damages fit into several different categories. The most common and talked about is “pain and suffering.� It’s also known in legal circles as “nonpecuniary� or “general� damages.

Damages for pain and suffering are intended to compensate an injured person for the loss of enjoyment of life caused by the injuries. My job as a personal injury lawyer is to assess and advocate on behalf of my clients so they can receive the best possible settlement given their particular situation. General damages can range anywhere from a few hundred dollars to several hundred thousand, depending upon the nature and extent of the injuries, and the impact those injuries have on the individual. ICBC adjusters will often tell people who are not represented by

(b) nature of the injury; (c) severity and duration of pain; (d) disability; (e) emotional suffering; (f) loss or impairment of life; (g) impairment of personal relationships; (h) impairment of physical and mental abilities; and (i) loss of lifestyle.

There may also be additional factors unique to a particular individual that could factor into an assessment of general damages.

Most people are not trained to assess damages. The insurance company will not educate you on what is involved in properly assessing the value of your injury claim. Insurance companies, by their very nature, are in the business of reducing risk and lowering their payouts. The adjuster’s job is to close the file as inexpensively and quickly as possible. If you don’t have proper legal advice, you are at risk of selling yourself short.

DEVELOPMENT OF A PEST MANAGEMENT PLAN Pest Management Plan (PMP) No.: 794-003-15/20 The Fraser Timber Supply Area Cooperative Association (FTSACA) is developing a Pest Management Plan (PMP) under the Integrated Pest Management Act. This plan will describe a vegetation management program using Integrated Pest Management, including the use of herbicides.

The purpose of the PMP is to describe the vegetation management program in the FTSACA chart area in the Fraser Timber Supply Area. Vegetation control methods in this plan include aerial foliar spray, ground foliar spray (including backpack and power nozzle), stem injection (hack and squirt), basal bark sprays, manual girdling, power saw, stem bending and pulling and mechanical site preparation. These treatments will take place within the Fraser Timber Supply Area that contains Crown land designated as forest land within the Chilliwack Forest District extending from the Nesakwatch River drainage on the Canada / US border in the south to the Nahatlatch River drainage in the north. It extends from the Pitt River in the west to the Skagit River in the east. Since the FTSACA chart areas are spread throughout the Chilliwack Forest District, nearby towns include Boston Bar and Hope and the communities of the Fraser Valley. There are numerous dwellings scattered throughout the plan area. Proposed herbicides to be used include Vision, VisionMax, Vantage, Weed-Master (glyphosate), Release MSO, Garlon RTU, Garlon XRT (triclopyr) and Sylgard 309 (siloxylated polyether). This Pest Management Plan will be in effect for a period of five years from the date of approval (approximately 2015 to 2020).

Local teams top divisions at volleyball provincials Hundreds of teams competed at event over two weekends at Tradex

The 2015 Volleyball BC Provincial Championships wrapped up this weekend at Tradex. Hundreds of club teams competed over the past two weeks for top spot in 13U, 14U, 15U and 16U categories.

The event brought together the best club teams from across the province, including those from Abbotsford’s

Orangemen and Elevate clubs and several from the Fraser Valley Volleyball Club (FVVC), for a three-weekend tournament hosted at the Tradex Convention Centre in Abbotsford and the Richmond Oval.

Elevate’s Larsen team won gold in the 14U Girls Division 3, while the FVVC won the 16U Girls title.

Other local teams also put up solid results.

In 13U Girls Division 2, Elevate McLean finished eighth, with Danielle Visser named most inspirational player. Division 3 competition saw Elevate Williams finish 13th, with Elizabeth Staetter claiming the most inspirational award.

The 13U Boys division saw the Orangemen Lions finish eighth, with Rahul Wiebe named most inspirational.

Virtanen called up to AHL Abby product playing with Utica comets

Jake Virtanen’s Western Hockey League season might be over, but the Abbotsford native and Vancouver Canucks first round draft pick won’t be putting away his skates quite yet.

Virtanen’s Calgary Hitmen were eliminated Friday from the WHL playoffs after losing in five games to the Brandon Wheat Kings.

But the 18-year-old Yale grad has been called up by the Canucks farm team, the Utica Comets, for their playoff run.

VIRTANEN

Because of his age, Virtanen was not eligible to join the Comets until his junior team was eliminated from the playoffs.

Virtanen notched 52 points in 50 games during the regular season and 13 points in 14 playoff games. Virtanen missed the first three games of the series with the Wheat Kings after being suspended.

He will be joined by fellow Canucks draft pick Jared McCann, who plays for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.

COMEAU Lindsey Gail Lindsey Gail Comeau (47) passed away peacefully on April 28, 2015 in the company of her loving family. Predeceased by her father Tom, Lindsey is survived by her mother Janet; sister Lesley and niece Mattia; husband Rob; and their five children Gilbert, Monique, Luc, Celine, and Kaiya. Lindsey was born in Kitimat, BC in 1968, but spent most of her life in Mission, BC. She completed her teaching degree at UBC after finishing a Bachelor of Arts at SFU, and returned home to pursue her career.

Lindsey was a dedicated educator, wife, and mother. She loved to travel and spend time with friends and family, and would often comment on how fortunate she was to have a close family and many friends.

Lindsey took comfort in knowing that so many caring people would look after her children and family in the future. We are so grateful for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time. A memorial service will be held at the Cedar Valley Mennonite Church at 1:00 pm, Saturday, May 9, 2015. Gordon Huxley died in the arms of his Heavenly Father Saturday, May 2nd in the Abbotsford Regional Hospital following a brief illness. He leaves his wife Phyllis and his sons David, Ken (Darlene), Phil (Joanna), numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. Gordon was born in Sydney NSW Australia on March 4, 1928, to Frank and Dorothy Huxley who had recently arrived in Australia from England. The family came to Vancouver, December 1929 where Gordon spent his school years, graduating from Vancouver Technical Secondary School. He met Rose Benner in Vancouver where they married in 1952. Gordon transferred with BC Electric to Abbotsford in 1953 where they built a home and raised their family. Gordon retired from BC Hydro in 1982, and spent the next 20 years enjoying his hobbies, and traveling with Rose to many interesting destinations. After Rose’s death in 2005, Gordon met and married Phyllis in 2006.

For the next 9 years they moved back and forth between Abbotsford and Spruce Grove, Alberta to be near their families. Gordon had a variety of interests: he was an accomplished radio controlled model airplane builder, talented photographer, and first class multimedia technician. Gordon accepted God into his life at an early age, the decision which became both chart and compass of his life, and which created the deep desire to live and teach God’s Truth. Besides his teaching, Gordon was actively involved with the rebuilding Camp Kawkawa in Hope as well as numerous other projects. The family would like to thank the Abbotsford Regional Hospital staff and doctors for their care and kindness. A funeral service will be held in Abbotsford at the Seven Oaks Alliance Church at 1:30 pm, Saturday May 9th, 2015.

Ron passed peacefully into the presence of his Lord and Saviour on Wednesday, April 29th surrounded by his family.

Ron was born in Victoria, BC to Tibor Eugene Rittich and Enid Margaret Putnam. After high school Ron pursued a career in engineering at BCIT and went on to work for various civil engineering firms.

Most recently, Ron worked for Wedler Engineering as the project manager until his retirement. He maintained a close relationship with his work colleagues. Ron really enjoyed going out for dinner exploring the outdoors, rock collecting, and daily going to Starbucks. He would often spend hours there studying and reading his Bible. During his last year of life he dealt with much physical suffering and Romans 5:1-5 became his anchor passage. Ron is survived by his dear wife of 33 years, Benita, daughters Rebecca (Mark), Ruth, Rachel and grandson Jacob; sisters Janet (Jack Chalifoux), Sue (Tom Chernenkoff), nephews and nieces. The family wishes to thank the nurses and doctors at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 6, 2015 from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm at Henderson’s Funeral Home, 34537 Marshall Road, Abbotsford, BC. Employment Opportunity - Kindergarten Teacher Squiala Elementary is a Band operated school located in Chilliwack, B.C. Our school offers a Montessori program, K4 through to Grade 3 and accommodates approximately 50 students. We have an opening for the position of a Teacher for our Kindergarten class. Please self identify if of Aboriginal Ancestry.

Responsibilities: The Teacher is responsible for the instruction of Kindergarten.

Skills and Qualifications: • Holds a valid B.C. Teacher’s certificate, TQS Category 5 • Bachelor of Education Degree • Active member of the B.C. College of Teacher’s • Experience and/or training in Montessori • A good understanding of the B.C. curriculum • Recent classroom teaching experience • Solid classroom management skills • Ability to prepare and apply long range planning for all students, which includes student modification and adaptation • Experience with IEP’s and special education practices • Genuinely committed to a high standard of professionalism, integrity and academic excellence • Knowledge of Sto:lo culture and Halq’eme’ylem and the ability to incorporate both into the classroom • Successful experience working within a First Nations community • Strong verbal and written communication skills • Dedicated to teamwork approach • Ability to work well with teachers, support staff, students and parents • Ability to maintain confidentiality • Must undergo a successful Criminal Record Check

Requirement: Must be willing to take the Montessori training and have it completed in order to implement in the new school year. This requirement only applies to those teachers not trained in Montessori.
