Elisha Jimmy was released on bail after appearing in Creston Law Courts on May 13 on a charge of arson causing bodily harm.

“She will not be residing in the Creston area,” Creston RCMP Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan told the Advance.

She was released on 13 conditions including no contact with the victim, no consumption or possession of alcohol, and no possession of weapons or incendiary devices. Jimmy is required to remain in B.C., and must advise the RCMP if she is in Creston.

Meredith is citizen of year

A tearful and visibly shaken Bob Meredith was clearly surprised when he was announced as the 2015 citizen of the year at Friday’s Blossom Festival opening festivities.

30 apartment fire that resulted in a Creston man, Ross Millar, being taken in critical condition to Vancouver General Hospital.

Millar received a skin graft last week, which the doctors determined to be 80 per cent successful, according to a Tuesday update on a GoFundMe.com fundraising page. The remaining 20 per cent was slated to receive an additional graft on May 14.

Creston airport a Kootenay medevac hub

port. The building also offers comfortable respite for medevac pilots while they are in Creston. In it, they can shower, make coffee, access the Internet and make phone calls. They can even catch some sleep if they need it.

“That training centre is the envy of the Kootenays,” she said.

“I have never seen such ambitious volunteers.”

Air transfers of medical patients often take time. In some cases, planes are also delivering special equipment needed to stabilize a patient so the air evacuation can be made. A pilot might wait up to four hours between landing and takeoff.

“I used to see them sitting under the wings of their plane, getting some shade from the hot sun,” Angus said. “Now they can come inside to get out of the weather and relax a bit. We want to make them feel safe and comfortable when they are coming in to Creston.”

That safety starts long before a plane gets anywhere near Creston. Installation of weather instruments and webcams provides pilots and dispatchers with accurate and timely information about weather and runway conditions. A quick visit to the airport’s website offers webcam photos, refreshed every 10 minutes. Pilots can see the conditions themselves and they have clearly become more and more confident that

Creston’s airport is able to accommodate them.

Runway lights that can be turned on from their air have made night landings possible.

And, once again, the commitment of volunteers plays a key role.

“One winter night we got a call that an air ambulance needed to come in,” society president George Green said.

“Lionel (a board director) and I had the runway plowed and ready for landing in 45 minutes. It was still snowing when the plane landed at 3 a.m.

“We don’t give enough kudos to B.C. air ambulance service. It’s extremely important to a community like this, with our remote location and elderly population.”

The airport also attracts other emergency services. It is used as a fixed-wing base of operations by forestry when fires are burning in the area.

RCMP, conservation officers and hydro operations also require the use of an airport at times. An on-site caretaker ensures needs can be met quickly, and the availability of regular aircraft and jet fuel make it a convenient stop.

The airport operates on a $120,000 annual contribution from the Regional District of Central Kootenay, and supplements that income with proceeds from fuel sales and hangar leases. Grants are sought for capital improvements. Out of that, budget equipment has to be purchased, operated and maintained.

“When we (the society) took over we didn’t have so much as a lawnmower,” Green said.

“Much of what we have has been purchased from other airports and it’s older equipment.

But it is lovingly and carefully maintained by our volunteers.”

As a rare — perhaps B.C.’s only — air facility operated by a society, Creston Valley Airport has seen its use as a centre for medical evacuations grow dramatically.

From “maybe three a year” when she was administrator of the Creston Valley Hospital, Mary Angus said that there have been 45 such operations carried out between December and March.

“That’s why I became involved,” said Angus, a nonpilot who serves as secretary of the Creston Valley Regional Airport Society (CVRAS).

CVRAS has been running the airport on contract for about eight years, after it was operated by the Town of Creston since its construction nearly 30 years ago.

Ron Toyota, then president of the airport society, was a key negotiator in the agreement that turned over operation of the facility to the society.

“It just made sense,” he said.

“With its location in Lister it was never going to be a priority for snow-clearing services and maintenance. The volunteers could respond quickly to any weather need and they were eager to see it become a true regional facility.

“It’s worked really well.

Coincidentally, a number of volunteers and directors have been medevac patients, so they are more committed than ever to ensure the airport is ready and able to handle medical evacuation flights.”

Not all patients being transferred from ground ambulances are from the Creston Valley, though.

“We have become a hub for the central and west Kootenay,” Angus said. “When air ambulances — fixed wing aircraft and helicopters — can’t land in Trail, Nelson or Castlegar because of weather and runway conditions, they often can in Creston. Patients are brought to the Creston airport to be air transferred to larger hospitals.”

Why has the society’s involvement worked?

“I have never seen such ambitious volunteers,” Angus said. “When something breaks down they come out in hordes.

Whether it’s snow plowing, grass mowing or fixing a water line break, they are there.

“And we aren’t all pilots. I hate flying.”

In fact, Angus is only one of three society directors who aren’t pilots. Two others no longer fly.

“Fred Jones” — the pastpresident who died last year — “wasn’t a pilot. But he was a great believer in the importance of this airport,” Angus said. “He worked tirelessly. He put in a lot of time, not only with us but with search and rescue.”

Report of Xbox theft reveals firearms in home

Creston RCMP received 65 calls for service from May 11-17 Cpl. Gerry Sliworsky said on Tuesday.

May 11 •When a male on Vancouver Street called 911 to report the theft of an Xbox, police arrived to find firearms in the residence without proper paperwork.

•After two horses that broke through a fence in Wynndel, police located the owner, who rounded them up.

•A Creston resident reported being harassed by phone calls from a sheriff after a theft from an Idaho casino. It turned out she was not involved, and the sheriff’s department apologized.

•A female reported finding inappropriate questions on a job application. Police spoke with the business owner, who said the questions were a joke.

•The suspect could not be located when a resident called police to report seeing someone involved in an earlier gun-pointing incident.

•A boat trailer was struck in a hit and run at a Highway 3A launch, causing about $500 in damage.

•An oncoming vehicle hit another vehicle pulling out of a driveway on 16th Avenue South. There were no injuries.

•Police determined the driver

did not assault a student on a school bus near Kitchener.

•No criminal activity took place during a neighbours’ dispute in Erickson.

•Police will follow up with the owner of a red Chevrolet Impala that was passing illegally near Kitchener.

•No indication of criminal behaviour was discovered when police investigated a car parked at Centennial Park, where children were playing.

•Police pushed a large boulder off Highway 3 20 kilometres east of Kootenay Pass.

•Cranbrook RCMP were informed of a BMW passing on a blind corner heading in their direction.

May 12 •A female turned in a shotgun she found while packing.

•A vehicle became high-centred while turning into a driveway on Erickson Road.

•A flower box at a downtown business was struck in a hit and run. The driver was identified and will be ticketed for failing to remain at the scene.

•A student who was not allowed on Prince Charles Secondary School (PCSS) property was gone when police arrived.

•A male exchanged words with a driver for speeding on Sixth Avenue North, then gave the licence plate number to police, who found

The deer was not located.

May 15 •A male camping on private property on Hurry Road left when asked.

•An investigation into a report of child pornography turned up nothing illegal.

•After falling asleep in public on Northwest Boulevard, an intoxicated male was given a ride home.

•A search and rescue team responded to a boat taking on water in Pilot Bay. •A driver will be ticketed after surveillance video recorded a hit and run in a Canyon Street parking lot.

•A West Creston resident said she was being kept awake by loud “cannons” being used to scare away wildlife. Police were unable to locate the source.

May 16 •Suspicious youth reported near a Northwest Boulevard business were just playing.

•An impaired driver at the Kingsgate border crossing was issued a 24-hour suspension, as well as other citations.

•Police visited PCSS to warn an unwanted individual to stay away.

•Windows were smashed on vehicles in Kitchener.

•A female was held in cells until sober after being removed from a residence where she was not wanted.

•An intoxicated male was picked up behind the Greyhound station and held in cells until sober.

•Fraud was reported after a male tried to cash a cheque drawn on an account with insufficient funds.

May 17 •A found debit card will be returned to the bank.

•No evidence was found after a reported break and enter in Kingsgate.

•A window was broken at the Creston Valley Mall after a driver hit the gas pedal instead of the brake.

•Shots heard in Kitchener came from someone firing a rifle in a safe manner and location.

•The owner of a horse wandering in Canyon and Lister could not be identified.

•Police could not determine the source of two shots fired in Yahk.

•The source of a single gunshot in Erickson was not found.

said a larger apron is needed at the end of the runway to accommodate easier turnarounds and make transfers easier.

Getting hooked up to the Lister water system would help, too. Water is pumped from a well, which has trouble meeting the airport’s needs.

There is a 25,000-gallon storage tank on-site. Ironically, Green said, that water storage can be used by the regional fire department to fight any fires in the area, “but we can’t get on their

(Lister’s) water system.”

“We have come a long way, though,” Angus smiled.

Green and Angus recently attended a BC Aviation Council (which the society just joined) conference and it was an eye opener. More than 90 airports were represented, “from YVR (Vancouver) to a gravel strip up north,” Angus said.

“We were the only one operated by a society. And we are one of the few that doesn’t charge medevac flights to land.”

“Bob was one of the founding members in starting the Citizens on Patrol,” Handy said. “This service to our community helped not only our citizens, but also the RCMP.” A teacher and principal for most of his professional career, Meredith was described as a man who gave his time at recess, noon hour and after school for activities like square dancing, basketball, baseball and other activities.

He served on the minor hockey executive and was a well-known baseball umpire for many years.

He trained others at umpire clinics throughout the Kootenays.

“I would say that Bob has shown by his life to have a very giving nature and has never counted the cost or hours,” Handy said. “It has always been a service of love and pride for his community.”

As a young man, Meredith began a life of public service by enlisting in the Canadian Navy.

A 35-year career in education

followed, “teaching and molding young children’s lives. …

Many have benefited from Bob’s influence, as seen by how many remember and love this special teacher.”

Among the other organizations that Meredith served with as a director and/or president are the Creston Curling Club, recreation centre society, Creston Golf Club, East Kootenay and Creston Valley teachers’ associations, and Creston Principals and VicePrincipals’ Association.

After retiring from his career in education, where in a 27-year span he served as principal of schools in Crawford Bay, Riondel, Wynndel, CanyonLister and Erickson-Yahk, Meredith worked as a Sun Life Financial advisor/agent for another 12 years. He retired from that career in 2004.

Meredith remains active in the Creston Valley Rotary Club and is president of the Creston and District Society for Community Living, which he joined seven years ago.

“CDSCL is where my heart is,” he said in a brief accep-

tance speech. “I plan to stay involved because it is very important to me.”

When Meredith took to the stage with his wife, Marion, Handy read a message of congratulations from their daughter, who wrote on behalf of his children and grandchildren.

As 2015 citizen of the year, Meredith was presented with a selection of gift cards from local restaurants and a gift package from Creston’s Pharmsave.

Flowers were presented to Marion.

Creston Mayor Ron Toyota and Regional District of Central Kootenay Area B director Tanya Wall and Area C director Larry Binks formally announced the opening of this year’s Creston Valley Blossom Festival.

Blossom Festival committee president Joanna Wilson introduced committee members and thanked them for their efforts.

Entertainment for the soldout evening was provided by Johnny Cash tribute performer David James and Big River. The group was a hit with the audience, which responded enthusiastically to each song.

Plans to construct a new facility for the Creston Valley Gymnastics Club on Canyon Street took a major step forward on May 12 when town council approved a zoning bylaw amendment to permit health and fitness use on the property.

Coun. Joe Snopek conducted a public hearing prior to the regular council meeting. Hearing no questions or objections from the gallery, Snopek declared the hearing closed.

After town council received an overview of design changes proposed to make the building more visually appealing, the required amendment was passed unanimously.

Construction adjacent to the former Broaster House building is expected to begin this year.

Council Briefs •Erin Carr, representing Gadicke and Carr, presented the 2014 audited financial statements.

Carr said she had no irregularities or concerns to report.

•Tax rates will be set at a spe-

cial council meeting on April 21.

•A request for a discretionary grant from the Columbia Basin Environmental Education Network was received. The group will be advised their application would be more suitable for a Community Initiatives Grant in the future.

•Application will be made to fund joint activities involving town council and the Lower Kootenay Band council under the C2C regional community-to-community forum grant program.

•Booking fees for Millennium Park were waived for a Teen Action Committee-sponsored concert on Aug. 15.

•Minor changes to the water rates and regulations amendment bylaw and fees and charges amendment bylaw were each given three readings. The amendments are primarily housekeeping changes.

•Engineering manager Colin Farynowski presented an overview of the town’s asset management program, which sets out plans to maintain and replace sewer and water lines, roads and sidewalks and other assets over a long term.

A toast to volunteerism

When Bob Meredith was announced on Friday evening as Creston’s 2015 citizen of the year, he joined an elite list of passionate and tireless volunteers who have served this community. Meredith was an obvious choice, with a remarkable track record of giving time and effort to numerous organizations, but it was no surprise when he took to the Prince Charles Theatre stage while fighting back tears. Despite their amazing record of good citizenship, recipients almost never seem to see the award coming. Inevitably, they are quick to point out others who would be just as deserving.

Meredith is the 47th person to be honoured this way in Creston.

Many of those chosen for the honour can be considered local legends.

Tak Toyota, Bill Herchmer, George Oliver, Ruby Roebuck, Wayne Salmond, Harry Haberstock, Vaughan Mosher, Anne Page, Lela Irvine, Alex Nilsson, William and Ruth Mitchell-Banks — the list is impressive, and one is left to wonder just what our community would have been like without anyone of them, or those whom I haven’t named.

We came to Creston after Tak Toyota had died. It was eight years after he had been named citizen of the year. I doubt that I had been on the job for a week before I first heard a reference to all the contributions Toyota made. The first winner, Fred Martello in 1969, was still active as a school board member, if memory serves. Herb Dodd, the 1976 choice, had recently retired and sold his practice to a young Dr. Gene Zackowski. In that year we arrived, the recipient was Bill Herchmer, one of Creston’s most recognized businessmen and volunteers.

Ruby Roebuck was the first woman on the list that I knew. She was completely dedicated to her causes and she led by example, inspiring others around her. I knew George Oliver early on and a kinder,

Lorne Eckersley more decent man would have been hard to find. In the ensuing years, I always got a kick out of seeing him play in the Shriners band in Blossom Festival parades. I don’t think he ever stopped grinning when he was on that float.

The 1987 honouree was Wayne Salmond, who was as passionate about the value of team sports for kids as anyone I ever knew. He held court at the rear of Home Hardware on Canyon, cajoling, organizing, promoting and just getting things done. If Wayne got an idea you could be pretty much assured he would make it happen.

It makes me happy to think that his legacy lives on his children, one of whom (Scott) is a senior official with Hockey Canada.

Three years later, Pastor Harry Haberstock rode in the Blossom Festival Parade as the 1990 Citizen of the Year. He shared Salmond’s enthusiasm for kids’ sports, and made contributions that are still affecting the positive place that is the Creston Valley. Likewise, Margaret Lavender, who built on her passion for music and the arts to enrich the lives of countless others.

on Youth was clear and true, with the proof still carrying on all these many years later.

Ed and Joan Gatzke were the first couple to be named as citizens of the year and I have always maintained that it would be more appropriate, in almost every case, to include spouses in each of the awards. Without family support it is unlikely that many of these recipients could have made the same contributions. The Gatzkes were followed in 2002 by Lela Irvine, who as mayor set an example for every other small-town mayor the province. She was respected by everyone, regardless of their political leaning. No one did municipal politics as well as Lela Irvine and I am proud that I was able to call her a friend, even after many a heated argument.

One of my favourite citizen of the year presentations was in 2007, when Betty Martin was honoured.

Few have been better at fundraising, which is no one’s favourite activity.

She may have been the youngest winner, but she was certainly as deserving as anyone on the list.

Bob Meredith was, to my recollection, a guy who always seemed to be everywhere. Thirty-odd years ago bingo was a big fundraising favourite and he was in great demand as a caller. He was a familiar figure behind home plate at baseball games, as he donned mask and chest protector to umpire countless games. His lengthy list of contributions can be found elsewhere in this issue. Bob Meredith can now be counted as one of those elite citizens who have been so honoured. He and the others on the list can count themselves as being in very good company.

Senate and politics must be separated To the Editor: The focus lately put on the Senate by the alleged misdemeanours of some of its members — notably, Mike Duffy — has revived calls for the institution’s demise. They should be strongly resisted.

What the Senate needs is not abolition but reform.

ing. Canada must find a way to get appointments to the Senate out of the hands of politicians.

That won’t be easy. It would help if one of the Senate’s functions wasn’t to give the provinces a voice in Parliament, but that is a vital job — and anyway, changing it would require a constitutional amendment and there is no hope of getting that given the hurdles now in the way.

So, we must find a new way of making the appointments from and for the provinces. And since we can’t get God to do it (though we must hope heaven’s influence will be brought to bear indirectly) we must look to humans.

But which humans?

What if, in each province, the job was given to a cadre of persons of stat-

ure but without obvious political connections — the presidents of various occupational organizations such as the medical and other professional associations, the farmers’ union, the major labour organization and others? These appointing groups would be mandated to fill vacancies in the Senate with, again, persons of stature and good repute but without partisan political connections or evident leanings.

The introduction of such an arrangement would doubtless be resisted by federal politicians and maybe by provincial ones, too, but if public support for it was strong enough they would have to give in.

Library needs strategic plan input

It’s a great time to be a librarian.

There was a time not so long ago that many people were questioning the future of libraries. With the advent of the Internet, the argument went, libraries would become obsolete. Of

The Book Drop Aaron Francis course, for those old enough to remember, the same argument was made when microfiche was the new thing. Through it all, libraries have emerged stronger and more entrenched in our community fabric than ever.

Libraries have survived by recognizing social trends and embracing change. When ebook technology became a real possibility, libraries were among the first to work with publishers in promoting this new technology and ensuring widespread access to it.

When the Internet started to become the go-to source for current informa-

tion, we changed how we acquire and maintain reference and non-fiction collections, and made sure that everybody in our communities could access the new technology.

When we talk about the future of libraries nowadays, it is about much more than information and books.

Libraries today are deeply involved in community and economic development, in advocating idea creation and small business incubation, in supporting the emergent maker culture, in promoting physical health and environmental sustainability, and more.

We work with vulnerable populations, and develop services and expertise around early childhood development.

We have transformed the library space from collections of resources to places that support learning and collaboration in all of its manifestations.

Of course, when I say “we”, I am professing to speak for a broad range of public libraries. In reality, here at Creston Valley Public Library, we have a long way to go in embracing the broader social changes that are taking over even our little mountain town. It is time that we start talking about what our library of the future looks like, and this process is going to start now.

Over the coming months, the

library board and I are going to challenge you to think beyond your conception of what the library is now to what the library could be and must be to support the future needs of our community. How will people of all ages learn in the future? In what ways do you see our community growing and developing? How are you and your family going to be impacted by current economic, social and technological trends?

What you tell us will be encapsulated in a new strategic plan for the library, and will become my work plan for the next several years. I’d like to make one promise to you: While I may challenge you to think beyond what you may think the library has been or should be, the final plan will be yours.

It will be made by and for the residents of Creston and Regional District of Central Kootenay areas A, B, and C, not based on what some library in Edmonton, New York or Nelson might be doing.

In mid-May, for the first time in year, I got sick — really sick — spending one night in the emergency room here in the Creston hospital. Those ER beds are not meant for a long stay, so sleep simply didn’t happen. However, while sitting there, staring at the wall about 4 a.m., a sudden flash of insight came.

In grief counselling, we learn that the third month after the death of a loved one can be quite challenging. The immune system essentially says, “OK, I’ve kept things going for two months, and now I’m taking a break.” So colds, the flu and more often set in. It’s something I’ve known for years. But when

emotions are in upheaval, memory and common sense don’t always kick in.

That night in the ER, I consciously let our old buddy go. He still comes for a quick visit now and then, but he’s free to carry on with whatever his mission may be. And so am I. I guess the message from this little story is to remember that, regardless of our training and regardless of all our life lessons, when emotional pain hits us, we are as helpless, as vulnerable, as non compos mentis as everyone else — even though we think we are in control!

Essentially, we find less protection of student information and too many vague parameters that leave parents with questions like, “Who will have access to our kids’ records? Will this information be shared between ministries? And what happens if my child’s private information is wrongfully disclosed?” There are no answers to these questions, and the Liberals’ “trust us” response is cold comfort when they are continually chastised for not being able to protect the information of children in foster care.

The third major aspect of this bill continues Premier Christy Clark’s long-held disdain for public educators.

Every profession regulates their professional development standards and needs, and government has supported that.

This is no longer the case for teachers. No longer will school boards and teachers work together to identify local needs for professional development.

Rather, the minister will decide based on a cookie cutter that he crafts in his office. The result: Kootenay teachers may not get the training they need to support Kootenay kids because the minister in Victoria prioritizes Vancouver’s needs for the province.

Moving Along Together Week 4 Enhancing Wellness: Beyond the Physical

Our weekly sessions at TAPS for this program are attended by people affected by memory changes and their family caregivers.

We use the “By Us for Us” Guides published through the University of Waterloo by the Murray Alzheimer Research and Education Program as points of discussion chosen by the participants. We’re offering a few ideas and resources in these columns for your information, for family, friends and loved ones. Information will be posted on the Valley Community Services website. This is meant to complement any information available through other sources and stimulate discussion.

In the second half of The Enhancing Wellness Guide the underlying theme could be summed up as the importance of being easy on ourselves. This is not new information is it? The advice to take care of ourselves is a recognized human goal, yet in actuality we spend a lifetime discovering what it means to live it. Historically we can find evidence of traditions exhorting the importance of a balanced life.

In our time, researchers have continued to document the benefits of understanding the effects of stress on our adaptability to change. We hear increasingly that our attitude, habits and states of mind contribute to our sense of well-being. Scientists track hormones, biochemical and resonance changes and more. They reveal our body’s wisdom as a living organism with positive or debilitating results over time. A paradigm shift is occurring in our understanding of the capacity and potential of our body/ mind to serve us well. We are constantly learning and adapting. We have access to many opportunities to help us in this journey.

changes. They identified three key areas in this booklet, Enhancing Wellness: Beyond the Physical: being centred, staying connected and living in peace.

What do these topics evoke for you? The basic idea to consider is, are you aware of how you take care of yourself and what you could do to enhance your psychological and emotional well-being? Being affected by memory changes potentially adds another level of distress in everyday life. How might we benefit by exercising our abilities, improving our capacities in the face of changes whether it is for ourselves or someone in our lives.

Here are a few suggestions written by the contributors to the guide:

Continue to live your life with basic fundamental core values and do those things that give you inner peace, meditate, utilize your faith community, do yoga or other bodywork, embrace your personal support network, identify one person who can be your trusted friend you can vent to when needed, get out, have fun, get involved, volunteer, do things that allow you to engage with other people, join a club, a church, go dancing, attend a day program, end or minimize negative relationships, don’t worry about making mistakes and forgive yourself if you do, do things that allow you to feel a sense of purpose and contribution, enjoy the little things that life has to offer, focus on today, bite the bullet, make time for family and friends, help others, explore new classes, spend time in the outdoors, take time for yourself, solitude is a good time for reflection, listen to music, write a journal..... what would you add to this list? How about a joke?

Teachers, parents and school trustees were not consulted prior to developing this bill. Ignoring the very people most impacted by legislation is a sure fire way to make bad laws. Our kids deserve better.

Rec centre used by patrons of all ages

I just snuck out of my office to have a peek at a couple programs happening here at the Creston and District Community Complex. One was the Magic School Bus program, which has been going on for many

Valley Advance. Tia has a blast teaching the exercise portion of the program, which starts with warmups singing along to Petula Clark’s Downtown, which I remember my mom singing when it was on the radio probably in the mid-sixties. (I believe since my mom was English, it was mandatory to learn and sing all Petula’s tunes whenever possible.)

Actually, they all seem to be having a great time and I believe they have graduated up into the fitness track area by this time.

Tradition continuing at North Woven Broom

After a couple of decades of twisting and turning handles and weaving broomcorn, North Woven Broom Co. owners Rob and Janet Schweiger decided to work toward retirement. They didn’t have to look too far for a successor, though — and their nephew, Luke Lewis, is now the one doing the twisting, turning and weaving.

“I’ve been in and out of the shop since I was pretty little,” Lewis said. “I never thought I would work here, but it’s a place I’ve always known of. ... Even having grown up always knowing about the brooms, it’s amazing how much there is to learn — sweeping styles and what a good broom feels like.”

His mom and Janet are sisters, and Lewis, who was born in Nelson and grew up near Toronto, visited Crawford Bay regularly with his family. His parents, both teachers, had an organic dairy farm and they encouraged creativity.

“The way my home was growing up, it was always about art and doing things with your hands,” Lewis said.

He took environmental studies at York University from 2006-2011, and worked in Jasper National Park and travelled each summer. When he wanted to learn to build a yurt — a round tent-like structure based on the tents used by central Asian nomads — he went to the Yukon to learn to make buckskin.

But when he visited his aunt and uncle during their winter vacation in Arizona, they brought up the idea of him taking over the business — they bought the Crawford Bay shop in 1992 from the previous owners — which is complemented by their daughters’ Granville Island Broom Co. in Vancouver.

This wasn’t something Lewis could just jump into, though — there was a steep learning curve to creating the North Woven Broom style, which employs a rarely-seen weave with two layers of unprocessed broom corn to give the broom’s head both strength and a unique bulbous look.

“There are very few people doing this, especially the weaving of the stems,” Lewis said. “It’s a very old style coming from Shakers, who were really the people who popularized the flat broom.”

The technique Lewis uses is about 200 hundred years old, and machines used in the shop aren’t particularly modern, either.

A flattener is from the 1870s, and a machine from the 1930s is used to make straighthandled brooms.

“With this machine, they would have stopped doing the weaving, but we’ve modified it,” said Lewis.

Even with the machines, the work is physically demanding, with muscle memory working to create the right tension — pressure that ensure good callouses are developed.

“My uncle often says, ‘We have callouses in places people don’t have places,’ ” said Lewis. “There’s a lot of contact.”

The challenges are worth it, though, to bring a level of style to a tool that can be found in every home.

“This is celebrating that and adding a level of beauty,” said Lewis. “I feel my aunt and uncle have really brought art to broom making.”

The art is evident in some of the more unusual handle styles, particularly manzani-

ta, which Rob and Janet have long gathered while on winter vacation in Arizona.

“I can get lost in it,” Lewis said.

“It’s so beautiful to look at.”

That can be said of all of the company’s products, which have been

used in a wide range of TV shows (Road to Avonlea and Star Trek: Enterprise), movies (Shanghai Noon and Bewitched) and stage productions (Broadway’s Fiddler on the Roof and the Lyric Opera of Chicago’s La traviata).

Of course, they’re probably best known for their use as promotional items by Raincoast Books, the Canadian publisher of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, which required a total of 300 full-sized brooms and 500 miniature brooms.

And while visitors are quick to identify the brooms with the shop, they are also mesmerized by the number of artisans in Crawford Bay, of which Lewis is proud to be one.

“There is so much to do and see here,” he said. “It’s a whole experience to be here. It’s not just brooms and it’s not just the forge, it’s everything.”

Singers, musicians teaming up for concert

The Spring Concert on May 29 at Prince Charles Theatre could have been alternately called Concert of the Kootenays as it brings together some very talented singers and songwriters from across the area. It should be a fun night as this circle of musical friends performs a diversity of their original songs and innovative arrangements of other country, blues, Celtic and maritime favorites.

Tim Plouffe will be opening the concert with his original country compositions and

unique style that won him entertainer of the year at the Budweiser Country Festival in Grande Prairie, Alta., two years in a row. Plouffe grew up in Creston and graduated from Prince Charles Secondary School. This is a rare opportunity to hear him perform as family commitments are his main priority these days.

Kootenay Jack (Jack Kenny) from Fruitvale is a talented singer-songwriter who has a number of CD releases to his credit. From his toe tapping rockabilly to his gentle ballads, he tells the story of a long and

interesting life playing music that reflects his love for both!

Trena Spears from Cranbrook won the Kootenays’ Best Singer competition in 2012 and has spent her time since then composing, performing and recording her original songs and raising a family. You will love Spears’ beautiful voice and the diversity of the country and blues songs she has written.

Thunder Cats sign Quebec d-man for new season CRESTON VALLEY THUNDER CATS

The Creston Valley Thunder Cats are pleased to announce the addition of defenceman MarcAntoine Gagnon from St. Paul, Que., for the 2015-16 Kootenay International Junior Hockey League season.

Gagnon joins the Thunder Cats from the College de l’Assomption in l’Assomption, Que., where he captained his team during the 201415 season while recording 10 goals and 29 points in 30 games.

“Marc is a highly-skilled offensive defenceman whose positioning and hockey IQ are already

very well developed,” said Thunder Cats head coach Jeff Dubois. “His goal is to play in the BCHL and we’re very pleased that he’s chosen Creston as the place to develop both on and off the ice this coming season.”

At College de l’Assomption, Gagnon played for former BCHL goaltender and current Alberni Valley Bulldogs scout Joel Quirion.

That connection led to the 17-year old travelling west for a Bulldogs camp in Port Alberni, where he was identified by Thunder Cats coaches.

Gagnon subsequently visited Creston and participated in the Thunder Cats’ spring camp in

Calgary, Alta., where he was a top performer.

“I’m happy to start a great experience and begin my junior hockey career with a great organization,” said Gagnon, who describes himself a smart

two-way blue-liner with a good first pass.

“This year, I’m looking forward to helping the Thunder Cats have a winning season. I think we have a team that can go far in playoffs, and I want to

work hard and be ready to make the step to Junior A next season.”

Gagnon will join his new teammates for the Thunder Cats’ main camp beginning Aug. 21 at the John Bucyk Arena.

Denise Lagasse (nee Gauthier) July 15, 1930 ~ May 12, 2015

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Denise Lagasse (nee Gauthier), resident of Creston B.C. She passed away on May 12, 2015 at Cranbrook Hospital B.C. at the age of 84.

Born in Coppen Sask. on July 15, 1930, daughter of Raoul and Maria Gauthier. She married Roland Lagasse October 21, 1953 in Gravelbourg Sask. They raised eight children while farming, operating Lagasse Welding. They enjoyed camping, church, bowling, travelling, family gatherings, gardening, playing piano and violin.

When they moved to Creston in 1996 they hosted family and friends with tours of the Creston valley.

Denise enjoyed her involvement with Holy Cross Parish events and kept busy daily knitting baby items for the hospital tuck shop.

She is predeceased by her husband Roland and son Marcel.

She is survived by daughters: Cecile Cousineau, Laurette Orban, Pauline Lagasse, Alice (Sam) Pon, Jeanne (Dave) Koback; sons: Raymond (Leane) Lagasse and Leo Lagasse; 13 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at Our Lady of Assumption Cathedral on May 30, 2015 in Gravelbourg, Sask.

Memorial donations may be made to Holy Cross Parish or to the Creston Valley Hospital Tuck Shop.

Obituaries Victoria Will

December 31, 1921 ~ May 15, 2015 Victoria Will passed away on May 15, 2015 at the Creston Valley Hospital after a lengthy illness.

Victoria was born in Fernie, BC to Asunta and Samuel Marasco, on December 31, 1921. Victoria spent her childhood and educational years in Fernie.

Victoria and her family moved to Creston in 1959.

Here she enjoyed her many friends and family members. She played bridge with her bridge club for over 40 years. Victoria entered her many selections of bread in the Fall Fair competition; always coming home with a blue ribbon.

Victoria is predeceased by her son David Will.

She will be sadly missed by her surviving family; husband Edward Will, daughter Darlene (Doug) Roberson and granddaughter Lindsay Robertson.

Friends wishing to make a memorial tribute may do so to Creston Valley Hospital Auxiliary Tuck Shop, Bag 3000, Creston, BC V0B 1G0.

Seniors getting out and about in the valley

This week, the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors (TAPS) received a donation of a box of freshly harvested leaf lettuce, thanks to the staff and volunteers at the College of the Rockies greenhouse. We anticipated their tender taste and enjoyed the look of the almost glowing, glistening green leaves as the staff washed them for lunch. The scent of lilacs is unmistakable throughout the valley and other garden blooms show up at the centre, bringing a bit of spring inside.

Tips from TAPS Maureen Cameron Our much anticipated Arts and Culture Week “Come Sing with Us” event promoted by the arts council in April was a great success, with about 50 people participating in singing familiar songs.

Thanks to Joanna Wilson with her enthusiastic and skillful piano playing and helping lead us all through an hour of singing. Folks of all ages from the Cresteramics day program, Creston and District Society for Community Living and TAPS, staff, volunteers and community visitors came together. The spirit of song and rhythm rang out for an hour in joyful sounds. Thanks to St. Stephen’s Presbyterian Pastor Church Gwen Brown for inviting us in. Watch for more community sing-alongs throughout the year, as I heard rumors of “more events like this”.

As well as the usual outings and activities through TAPS, a group of seniors travelled by bus to Prince Charles Theatre during Focus on Youth to enjoy an afternoon performance.

Thanks to Brenda Brucker for the idea and reserving seats for us. And kudos to the youth and their teachers for their work and enthusiasm. Another outing was to the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area, which, with its easy access for parking and wooden walks, is friendly for all kinds of locomotion.

Our Moving Along Together program for folks affected by memory changes is in its fourth of eight weeks and is going well. Our cook during this program is Kaylie and judging by comments, her skills in the kitchen are much appreciated.

On April 12, the TAPS room was the location for a daylong program by presenters from KCOSA hosted by the Better at Home program.

The two workshops, free of charge, were appreciated by the 20 people attending, with the first covering information about licensing issues for mature drivers and the second covering topics and resources relating to advance care planning and directives. Free materials were made available, and many of these are also at your doctor’s office and through Better at Home. Craig and Judy Gray were the presenters (they can be reached at 250352-6635 or kcosakootenaycosco@ gmail.com). We all came away convinced that this information is

relevant for us all, to inform yourself and your family and to be proactive for planning ahead no matter what your age.

Last Thursday was Walk with your Doc day and a group of TAPS folks was ready to participate for part of the walk, joining others from the community heading out from the community complex.

Thanks again to our volunteers and partners and donors. Financial donations are appreciated on an ongoing basis to help us keep this program going.
