Former Columbine principal shares heart-wrenching story Frank DeAngelis recounts 1999 school shooting during Red Deer visit

T

he man who was principal at the time of one of North America’s most horrific school shootings was in Red Deer to tell his story last week.

Frank DeAngelis, former principal at Columbine High School, spoke about his experience and how the community overcame the tragedy that happened on April 20th, 1999. DeAngelis was the final speaker of the Campus Security Administrators Workshop Conference being hosted by Red Deer College.

“The reason I am here is because I made a promise after the tragedy at Columbine that I was going to do whatever I could to make sure we’re being proactive and to share some of the advice I had to learn the hard way,” he said. “Thirteen of my students were killed by two of my own students. There is not a day that I don’t think about that.”

DeAngelis became the principal of Columbine High School in Jefferson County, Colorado in 1996 after being a teacher there. He retired just last May. One of his favourite things to do while he was principal was to go down to the cafeteria at lunchtime and visit with students.

On April 20th, 1999, DeAngelis was late getting down to the cafeteria.

“I was meeting with a teacher to offer him a full-time contract and my secretary comes running in and she said, ‘Frank, there has been a report of gunfire’,” he said. “Immediately I was thinking this can’t be happening. I ran out of my office and my worst nightmare was becoming a reality – I came in direct contact with the gunman.

“It’s been over 16 years but I still have flashbacks of what I witnessed in that moment. I remember seeing a kid with a ball cap on backwards and a black vest which carried all the ammunition he had. All I remember was staring at him – he was about 50 yards away from me. I can remember distinctly thinking, what is it going to feel like to be shot? It would happen quickly, my body would get cold. And then all of a sudden I start thinking about my wife and how I will never hold my kids again. Everything slowed down,” he said.

“Fortunately for me there were some girls who were unaware what was happening and they were getting ready to come into the crossfire and they redirected my attention. It was at that point that I ran to an adjacent hallway as the gunman came towards us.”

He added there were several things that happened that day that he can’t explain.

“The gunman is coming towards us and

we’re going down a hallway and all the doors are locked. I reach into my pocket and I had 35 keys and I pulled out the one master key that opens up all the doors,” said DeAngelis. “I have tried that time and time again – to pull out the master key in that stack. It was my day – that one key saved my life and it saved the girls’ lives.”

He added what he found out later from the police was that if David Sanders, a teacher at Columbine who was killed by the gunman, had not come up a particular hallway as DeAngelis was coming out of his office, DeAngelis likely would have been shot that day.

“Needless to say, here I am in this wonderful school, 13 people are dead on my watch, in addition two of the kids that did the shooting that also injured 26 kids, were my students,” he said. “It was a war zone.”

Following the tragedy, DeAngelis promised the students who were freshman that he would remain principal at the high school until they graduated.

“My priest told me that I really needed to go back and rebuild that community and I didn’t feel like I could do it in three years.

If I really wanted to do it, it had to be a generational thing so I made the promise to be there until every kid who was in an elementary school (at the time of the tragedy) graduated and that was the class of 2012,” said DeAngelis, who ended up retiring in 2014.

Today, DeAngelis said he believes schools are better equipped to handle tragedies like Columbine.

“The protocol on that day at Columbine was to secure the parameter and the two gunman had reign of the school for about 30 minutes. Now as a result of some of the things that happened at Columbine, we are actively engaging the shooter. Unfortunately shootings are still occurring but I think they are engaging the shooter much sooner and research shows that if they can be deterred - timing is everything,” he said. “I think some other things that were learned is how do you create an environment for help. How do you connect with those kids that don’t necessarily feel connected? I’m hoping to be proactive to teach kids how to treat each other – how to respect each other – how to create environments that are welcoming to all students.

“Today, I think threat assessment is better. I think counseling is better and I think we have learned. But unfortunately every time we make a correction, it seems shooters are out-thinking law enforcement agents or schools. A prime example was Sandy Hook (Elementary). They had everything in place – they had secure entry, but they didn’t anticipate the shooter would shoot his way through the glass. The

bottom line so many times is that there is a feeling of comfort when you see cameras or metal detectors, but we have to do something for these people who are crying out for help. As I have stated, the two shooters at Columbine didn’t come out of their mother’s womb hating – what happened from the time they turned 18 and were killing their friends in a school?”

Unfortunately, school shootings continue to happen and DeAngelis said every time he hears of another one he is re-traumatized.

“It could be another school, it could be across the country, it could be 20 years later – when I see those kids running out of the building it takes me back to April 20th, 1999,” he said. “That’s the one thing everyone I think feels when you experience a tragedy – in a year or two you are going to wake up and everything is going to be back to normal when it’s not. You have to redefine what normal is,” he said. “What is interesting is that people are in different places – some suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder five or six years out.”

DeAngelis said his faith helped him move forward.

“It was two days after I survived the shooting and I was feeling survivor’s guilt.

The priest at my church said there was a reason I was spared – now go back and rebuild that community. I felt the spiritual strength to do that,” he said. “Another friend of my parents – he was a Vietnam veteran – he said if you don’t help yourself, you can’t help anyone else. Between the counseling and my faith, it helped me continue. I also had the support of people in the school district.”

Meanwhile, DeAngelis continues to remember those who were killed in the Columbine shooting and he honours them by speaking around the country and raising awareness.

“There is always someone out there to reach - kids who are struggling. So many times with these school shootings, these kids are on a suicide mission because they know they are going to be killed. There are other ways to seek help and I don’t care how dark it may seem – there is always going to be light there,” he said. “For staff I think the most important thing is that each day you realize the impact you can have on a kid. Reaching out and providing love – there is a way to have that environment where you care about them and they care about you. That is what it is all about.” efawcett@reddeerexpress.com

Ross Street Patio almost ready for the season

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Red Deer Express With overwhelming success in previous years, the Ross Street Patio will be back again with a kick-off celebration on June 5th.

The patio will host numerous events beginning in June that will run through until September. These events include live musical performances from local artists, as well as a new artisan wares sale portion.

“The kick off is a little bit different from what we do for the rest of the patio season.

We do it quite casually, and don’t bring in the big stage yet or anything like that. Randi Boulton will play her music from just before 12 to just after 1 p.m.,” said Special Events Coordinator for the City of Red Deer Peter McGee. “From 4-6, St. Groove will perform and they are a funk/jazz kind of band. At the same time, we will have a magician by the name of Kyle Key, so he will go around and do different things for the kids.”

All of the patio events have been designed in coordination between the City and the Downtown Business Association. This year, events have been scheduled to run Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Wednesday evenings from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. and on the first Friday of every month.

The Wednesday evening events run in accordance with the Downtown Market that runs from 4 to 7 p.m. It begins on June 3rd.

The Friday events complement the many art galleries that host events downtown on Fridays, such as the First Friday gallery show-

ing events.

“The whole goal of everything that’s going on downtown right now is to make it more welcoming and to attract more people down there and in turn, help the businesses down there,” McGee said.

“We’re trying to make it so that people aren’t coming down just for a specific show – that they are coming down simply because it’s a nice place to be. There’s always some sort of entertainment going on and they are usually local artists, so the patio provides us a way to reach out to those local artists.”

Last year, the Downtown Business Association (DBA) took over the programming for the Wednesday evening events, allowing the City to create the opportunity for events on both Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Tyler Bowman of the DBA said this year, the patio would incorporate some spaces for local artisans to sell wares. Other than that, the format will be very close to previous years with the addition of the Tuesday events.

“It’s continuously creating a destination for people to go and be a part of the community, and to get that sense of community. It gets them out on the streets and interacting with one another,” Bowman said.

“Red Deer is quite a vibrant cultural community – there’s always events going on. The patio just continues to allow people a space to get out of their offices for a day and go and have lunch outside while supporting local businesses and merchants downtown. They can enjoy the weather, the entertainment and the atmosphere.” kmendonsa@reddeerexpress.com

In its 45th year, the Red Deer Farmer’s Market kicked off in the City last weekend.

Despite the wet and cold weather, about 150 vendors were selling their wares and hundreds of people flocked to the Red Deer Arena grounds to enjoy the annual pastime.

“It’s always an exciting time for me and my family,” said Dennis Moffat, operator of the Red Deer Farmer’s 12:18 PM Market.

“It’s the start of our summer season and I think that is one of the reasons why people like it – it means summer is not too far away.”

On any given weekend from May long until the Thanksgiving long weekend, upwards of 200 vendors can be found at the market.

Located in the parking lot of the Pidherney Curling Centre and the Red Deer Arena, changes for the next couple of seasons are on the horizon for the market.

Red Deer City council has approved the demolition and reconstruction of the Red Deer Arena in anticipation of the 2019 Canada Winter Games.

As construction happens on the Red Deer Arena, the Farmer’s Market will be forced to find a temporary location.

“I’m in the midst of searching for it.

I’ve had some offers but nothing is for public consumption yet,” added Moffat.

“I have a lot of faith and I am an optimist that we will find a good place.

It’s Red Deer’s market and they will find it wherever we go.”

He added ideally he would like to keep the market in the downtown

area, if possible.

“There is a great financial boom for the City of Red Deer. It brings a lot of people to town and we do a lot of business in the short period that we operate – 88.5 hours over the season,” he said.

“I HAVE A LOT OF FAITH AND I AM AN OPTIMIST THAT WE WILL FIND A GOOD PLACE. IT’S RED DEER’S MARKET AND THEY WILL FIND IT WHEREVER WE GO.” DENNIS MOFFAT

“We generate more than $5 million worth of business during that time,” added Moffat.

The Red Deer Arena will be demolished next year. It is anticipated the project will be completed in the fall of 2018. The total cost is pegged at $15.3 million.

“Council was given two options with respect to the future of the arena. Because of the repairs required for the roof, we would either need to spend approximately $9-$10 million just to repair the roof. Instead of throwing good money after that, council decided to invest the $15 million for a complete rebuild of the arena so that the life of that facility would last approximately 25-30 years,” said Mayor Tara Veer.

“Recreation is working closely with affected community sports teams that will be affected by the construction,” she said.

“The annual weekend market is a much-loved event for Red Deerians and we need to accommodate and make provisions for the market both during construction season at the Red Deer Arena, as well as positioning it for success in the long run once construction is complete,” said Veer.

“My understanding at this time is that there are various options to accommodate the market in the shortterm and particularly during construction.

“In the long run, the construction of the Red Deer Arena will actually position the market even better because of the upgrades to paving and the enhanced washroom access.”

Sarah Cockerill, director of community services for the City of Red Deer, said the City would like to see the market back in its current location once construction of the new arena is complete.

“We’re very happy to be in partnership with the Farmer’s Market and we hope that they come back once construction on the arena is finished,” she said.

“We are also including the Farmer’s Market in all of our planning and design consultations as it relates to the new Red Deer Arena and what that might look like in terms of enhanced facilities that they can tap into from the outside. We are definitely working with Mr. Moffat to ensure the market has a home following the temporary move.

OPINION Continued support The people of Nepal continue to endure unimaginable suffering, as a second earthquake struck the region on May 12th. The death toll from the April 25th 7.8-magnitude earthquake has surpassed 8,500 with officials saying that number could reach 10,000 as aid workers continue to search through the rubble. More than 250,000 people have been left homeless as well.

As mentioned, a second major quake on May 12th, with a magnitude of 7.3, struck 76 kms east of the capital Kathmandu, as people were struggling to recover from the first earthquake.

The death toll from the two quakes now stands at an estimated 8,583.

Dozens are still missing as well, officials say.

The previous deadliest earthquake to strike the country in 1934, killed at least 8,519 in Nepal, as well as thousands more in neighbouring India.

Nepal is a country that has struggled with high unemployment, poverty and hunger for many years, making these events all the more devastating.

Here at home, the Red Deer Rotary Clubs are fundraising for ShelterBox – an organization that responds to disasters around the world.

The program helps families survive in the immediate aftermath of a disaster.

ShelterBoxes are packages that contain a family tent, blankets, water purification, cooking utensils, a stove, a toolkit, a children’s activity pack and other vital items. ShelterBox response team volunteers deliver the goods to victims of disasters. For more information,

On an international scale, organizations are working to help bring order back to the region. The Canadian Red Cross is still active onsite as well. Before the second earthquake officials were providing services in two remote locations – with members in Dhunche and in Khukondole. However, the team in Khukondole has been evacuated until further notice due to road closures that made it difficult and unsafe to reach patients or for patients to reach the unit.

The Canadian Red Cross is now considering returning in a mobile configuration.

Red Deerians are encouraged to support those impacted by making a donation to the Canadian Red Cross Nepal Region Earthquake Fund at www.redcross.ca, by calling 1-800-4181111 or by contacting the local Canadian Red Cross office. The Canadian Government will match eligible donations through to May 25th.

Also, the Salvation Army’s International Emergency Services team is currently working in Nepal to support local officials and assess how best the Salvation Army can respond in partnership with other agencies already on the ground.

The Salvation Army officially opened its work in Nepal in April 2009.

We urge Red Deerians to give what they can – even in these tough economic times. It is hard to image the hardships in Nepal and every little helps.

Women are twice as likely as men to experience mood disorders Almost anyone can attest to the fact that men and women are different in many ways. Scores of books – which have achieved varying degrees of success and acclaim – have been published that attempt to quantify and explain the differences.

In the field of psychiatry, gender differences are an important phenomenon as men and women not only experience different disorders, they experience the same disorders differently.

The best example of this occurs in mood disorders such as depression and bipolar disorder.

Women experience a higher incidence of these conditions and manifest different symptoms across their lifespan than men.

To begin with, women

This difference in incidence is not fully understood, but there seems to be a connection between female mental health and the hormonal system.

For instance, there is no difference in incidence among pre-pubescent children or among seniors.

Gender difference seems to be confined to the reproductive years, which suggests that hormones such as estrogen play a role.

more likely to have a mood disorder, but women experience different symptoms than men.

Women are much more likely to have a seasonal pattern to their depression and are more likely to have an increased appetite and need for sleep compared to the classic symptoms of insomnia and lack of appetite.

Women with mood disorders are also much more likely than men to suffer with a co-existing anxiety disorder and also tend to experience their disorder as a chronic illness across their lifespan rather than an isolated incident.

It seems that during the reproductive years women are at a much higher risk with their mood disorders than they are in their early years or after menopause.

Hormonal events such as pregnancy or the period of menopause tend to increase recurrences and symptoms of mood disorders.

For example, women are more likely to present bipolar symptoms for the first time after a reproductive event. Also, 70% of women with existing mood disorders will relapse during pregnancy.

The post-partum period is widely known to be a risky time for women in terms of mood symptoms and many women experience either post partum blues or the more serious depression. In fact, as many as 80% of women experience the mild blues after giving birth – not a disorder, but some mild depression and anxiety that dissipate quickly.

postpartum depression affects 10 to 15% of women and only a very few suffer from the psychiatric emergency of postpartum psychosis.

Menopause brings hormonal instability that appears to be linked to an increased frequency of depressive symptoms and women with a history of mood disorder are at a much higher risk of recurrence during this period.

Indeed, the female hormonal system appears to affect her mental health, while on the other hand, mood disorders themselves may affect the timing of some reproductive or hormonal events.

For example, menopause seems to occur earlier than average in women with a history of depression.

With an increasing

understanding of the relationship between a woman’s reproductive cycles and her mental health, there will be possibilities for gender specific treatments and treatments designed to suit the hormonal landscape of a specific time of life.

In the meantime, it is important to get treatment if you experience a mood disorder. Depression and bipolar disorder are serious illnesses with many health consequences and should not be ignored.

If you have a mood disorder and are considering pregnancy, talk with your doctor about your options.

Events cancelled for this year’s Festival of Trees Officials are in full swing with planning the 22nd annual Festival of Trees. This year’s Festival will not include Festival Lights the Night and the Festival’s Winter Solstice. The Senior Appreciation and Volunteer Sneak a Peek will be combined as well.

For 21 years the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre has received more than $11.8 million from the Festival of Trees, and their mission is to continue this great event through the ever changing economy, officials said. The business of fundraising is no different for ‘for profit’ businesses which make up part of the event’s supporters, officials say.

Further reductions will be to take the Festival back to two pavilions at Westerner Park by returning the children’s activity area Candy Cane Lane, back to Stockmen’s Pavilion. However, in regards to the Festival Lights the Night, officials are excited to announce that the City of Red Deer, in partnership with the Downtown Business Association, will host a similar event ‘Red Deer Lights the Night’. This event will be a community celebration that will kick off the winter holiday season.

Fundraising efforts for this year’s Festival of Trees will be directed to enhance client care and services in the Medical Specialty Clinics at the Red Deer Regional Hospital.

Medical Specialty Clinics provides a multidisciplinary approach to care for clients in Central Alberta living with multiple sclerosis, Hepatitis C, heart failure and anticoagulation therapies as well as specialized geriatric services and stroke prevention complex medical conditions.

Over 2,000 clients per year access ambulatory services in the Medical Specialty Clinics. This number is anticipated to double by 2024.

All Central Alberta residents will benefit from the renovation and expansion of services by improving access to a specialized team and thereby decreasing wait times, officials said.

The renovations will result in an improved physical environment that supports clients with mobility aides, family presence at clinic appointments and allowing for the creation of new and the expansion of existing services.

Enhancements to the Medical Specialty Clinics space will support individuals with chronic conditions to maintain maximum independence and avoid hospitalization.

Bussing fees to increase in Red Deer Public district

BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express The Red Deer Public School district has voted in favour of increasing bussing fees in hopes of addressing an anticipated $378,952 deficit in its transportation budget.

“We are not an anomaly in the province – most districts are struggling with their transportation budget in some fashion,” said Bev Manning, board chair.

“The discussion is that we have suffered with transportation funding for quite some time. It is insufficient. It is disappointing that it is insufficient and we have managed, but we just can’t manage any more, especially in this financial climate.

“It doesn’t make any of us happy to have to charge this fee – we tried to find some different options, but really this is about the only thing we could come up with that was fair to everyone who is using the service.”

Transportation fees for students in Kindergarten to Grade 5 who live under 1.6 km from the school will be charged $300, while students who live between 1.6 km and 2.4 km will be charged $150 and students who live over 2.4

km will pay $75.

Students in Grades 6-12 who live under 2.4 km will pay $300 and students who live over 2.4 km will be charged $75.

In addition to increasing revenue, administration proposed expense reductions and amending service levels to ensure student bussing is operated in the most effective and efficient manner.

Other recommendations included the double-shifting of buses for selected routes which is more efficient. This change would also see a minor adjustment to start and end times at affected schools. The district is also looking at alternatives for students using transportation services and attending Spanish Bilingual and Christian Alternative programs which are programs of choice and do not qualify for the same level of provincial funding.

In developing the recommendation, the district devel-

oped a common approach to addressing transportation fees and service levels with counterparts in Red Deer Catholic and Chinook’s Edge School Divisions who are facing similar challenges.

“This has been an ongoing issue for the district. It’s important that our student transportation system be selfsustaining and that is why we need to make these changes,” said Manning. “It means that those using the system will have to contribute to the shortfall. In the past, we have had to redirect funding for instruction to cover the deficit and we simply can no longer do so.”

While the recent provincial election saw a change in government which may impact overall funding for education, the district’s priority would be additional revenue to support instruction rather than transportation services.

The political influence of Alfred Speakman Red Deer has generally been noted for the calibre of people who have represented the community in the provincial and federal legislatures.

DAWE Alfred Speakman was one of the most capable of those political figures.

He served first as Red Deer’s MP and then as MLA for many years.

He was also the Leader of the Opposition in the Alberta Legislature during the Second World War. Speakman was born in Dundee, Scotland in August 1880. He emigrated to Canada with his family to the Antler Hill district near Penhold in 1890.

As soon as he was old enough, he acquired his own farm in the Hill End district, but soon moved back to the family farm at Antler Hill.

His father, James, had become very active in provincial farmers’ organizations. James eventually became the second president of the United Farmers of Alberta, following James Bower,

Alfred became a very active opponent of Social Credit. He was instrumental in creating the Unity Movement, a coalition of many political groups against Social Credit. In 1940, he successfully ran as an independent candidate in the provincial election for the Red Deer constituency.

In 1941, he was elected leader of the Unity caucus in the Alberta Legislature and became the Leader of the Opposition. Such was his influence that he was also appointed to the provincial Post-War Reconstruction Committee and served as chair of the Agriculture Sub-Committee.

Unfortunately, poor health continued to dog him. He passed away from a heart attack on Nov. 4th, 1943. Among those who paid tribute to him on his passing were Premier Ernest Manning, J. Percy Page and Elmer Roper.

Alfred was survived by his wife Elva Pearl (Soley), and his daughter Mary Usher. His nephew, Thomas Speakman (Tom) Barnett, was a seven-term MP for the constituency of ComoxAlberni in B.C. The Speakmans’ home still stands at 4010 Ross Street in the Michener Hill district of Red Deer, but is not considered a historic site.

with his enormous abilities as a speaker, Alfred had a great deal of influence in national affairs, much greater than one might have expected from a member of a third party in parliament.

For example, he served as chair of the committee on land settlement for veterans of the First World War. In the spring of 1926, he became seriously ill following an operation. For a while, it looked like he might not survive the illness. Although he was not fully recovered, he faced another election in the fall of 1926. Such was his popularity, he was still re-elected with more than twice the number of votes of his nearest opponent.

In 1930, the Great Depression set in, but Alfred was again able to get re-elected to the House of Commons, albeit with a much reduced majority. However, as the Depression progressed, the U.F.A. began to collapse as a political party.

Disillusioned by the hard times, economically and politically, Alfred joined the new C.C.F. party (the forerunner of the NDP). However, in the 1935 federal election, another new political movement, Social Credit, swept Alberta. He finished third in the vote results.

Meanwhile, Alfred became the secretary of the Penhold local of the Alberta Farmers’ Association and continued in that position when the organization became part of the United Farmers of Alberta.

He served as a trustee on the Antler Hill School Board. He became a councillor for Local Improvement District 19 and was later chair of the council for the Rural Municipality of Arthur.

In 1921, Alfred decided to run in the federal election as a candidate for the United Farmers of Alberta in the Red Deer riding.

He was elected in a landslide, winning by more than twice the number of votes than all of his opponents combined.

He was easily re-elected in the federal election of 1925.

Alfred initially sat with the caucus of the Progressive Party, which represented farmers in the House of Commons and was the second largest party in Parliament after the 1921 election.

However, the Progressive Party suffered from a great deal of disunity. He consequently moved over to what was known as ‘the Ginger Group’ of progressive MPs in Ottawa.

Local student selected for summer research program

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Red Deer Express A Red Deer Grade 11 student has been chosen as one of a limited few who will participate in an extensive summer research program through the Heritage Youth Researcher Summer (HYRS) Program.

Andrew Panteluk, 16, will be going to the University of Calgary to study the effects of exercise on cerebral blood flow and look at the impacts of exercise of cognitive functioning. For six weeks, he will participate in professional research labs, learn about the facilities and develop his understanding of mental and physical health.

“Ever since I came into middle school science, I’ve always had a keen knack for the sciences – biology, chemistry, physics.

This program is really cool because you can experience more things that are outside of the classroom than you otherwise would in high school. You get to participate in real research, and that’s really cool. This will also allow me to get some experience to really make sure that this is the kind of medical research I want to do,” he said.

Panteluk added to be able to study neuroscience is a topic that holds great personal interest for him.

“I’m really focusing on neuroscience and this field is very dear to me because

I’ve had a lot of family members who’ve been impacted by neurological disorders.

I didn’t know that when I was applying to it, but now that I’ve been selected, it’s even more interesting to me because I can relate some of those things to my own experiences of what my family went through,” he said.

Over 200 students apply for the program, with 50 being chosen in total for the whole province. Of those 50, 22 students will be sent to the University of Alberta, 22 will be sent to the University of Calgary, and six students will take their program at the University of Lethbridge.

The program is well suited to Panteluk’s academic interests, but also his extracurricular interests of ski races and being a lifeguard. He said the link between physical activity and the medical research fit him perfectly and he is glad to have been given this opportunity.

“I can learn more in the neuroscience field and I’m definitely looking towards that field as I start applying for university next year. A major component of the HYRS acceptance is that you have to be willing to be an ambassador for the program, so I’ll come into classrooms and talk about my experiences and relate those to curricular activities inside the classroom.

That’ll be pretty cool – getting to inspire other students as well who are coming up

through the grades.”

Panteluk said he is a little nervous, but is much more focused on the excitement of the program’s opportunities. He added he is hopeful that he will be conducting such research one day, and views the HYRS

program as a great opportunity to get started.

CITY BRIEFS WESTERNER PARK CEO UPDATE The board of directors of Westerner Park has decided not to continue the contract of Darrell Komick as the organization’s chief executive officer and general manager, effective last week.

“As we move ahead with our strategic vision for Westerner Park, we look forward to finding a CEO to reflect our goals, and to work with our staff, stakeholders and volunteers to carry those plans out effectively,” said Graham Heron, president and board chair of the Westerner Exposition Association. As that search continues, Assistant General Manager Jim White will serve as acting CEO and general manager.

LIBRARY SURVEY Red Deerians are being asked to help shape Red Deer Library Board’s plan of service via a short telephone survey to be conducted this week. Environics Research Group will conduct the Board’s community needs survey. The survey is a version of the questions asked by library staff and board members at the City of Red Deer Let’s Talk event in the Bower Mall in April.

A random selection of Red Deer residents will be asked to participate in a short, person to person survey asking what they like about living in Red Deer and what the Library can do to improve their quality of life.

“The results of this survey will be impor-

POLICE BRIEFS MEN ARRESTED AFTER BREAK AND ENTER On May 12th, Sylvan Lake RCMP were called to investigate a break and enter to a business in the Sylvan Lake Industrial Park.

During that crime, a Ford F-350 was stolen.

On May 13th at 2 p.m., Sylvan Lake RCMP were alerted to the possible location of that stolen truck by a member of the public

who had seen pictures of the truck on facebook.

The truck was reportedly being dismantled at a rural property near Benalto. Police attended this location and the suspect fled in the stolen truck. For reasons of public safety, the pursuit was terminated.

Further investigation into this matter led police back to the same rural property where two males were eventually arrested without

incident.

Travis Patrick Meyers, 29, of Red Deer County was arrested at his residence and charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000, flight from police and failing to comply with previous release conditions.

He was brought before a Justice of the Peace and has been released from custody on $3,000 cash bail with numerous conditions of release.

The second male arrested on the property was Gary Raymond Auvigne, 39 of Penhold who was wanted on several outstanding arrest warrants.

Auvigne is not facing any new charges as a result of this incident.

Investigators are asking anyone who may have information regarding this occurrence to contact the Sylvan Lake RCMP at 403858-7200.

HOUSE FIRE BEING INVESTIGATED

Fire investigators continue to assess the damage and investigate the cause of a house fire in Oriole Park last week.

At 8 p.m. on May 14th, Red Deer Emergency Services responded to a call for a house fire at 34 Osborne St.

When fire crews arrived on scene the family had safely evacuated the home and there were no injuries reported.

The fire was quickly knocked down by fire crews and it was confined to only one room in the home.

However, the damage was extensive enough that the residents were not allowed to go back inside their home and the Red Cross stepped forward to provide shelter and support services for the family.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.

MAN CHARGED AFTER ARMED ROBBERY RCMP arrested a masked Red Deer man within hours of his armed robbery of the Deer Park Express 24 last week.

At 5:20 a.m. on May 12th, RCMP received a report of an armed robbery at the Express 24 on Davison Drive.

A masked man armed with a knife entered the store and

demanded cash from the staff member. The suspect departed in a blue truck with a toolbox in the back, heading eastbound down the alley behind the store.

Thanks to the store’s video surveillance, RCMP were able to quickly identify a suspect and the suspect vehicle. Shortly after 1 p.m., RCMP located the suspect in the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop.

Jayden Riley McKean, 19, of Red Deer, who was also wanted for outstanding warrants, was taken into custody without incident.

A judicially authorized search of the vehicle revealed evidence linking McKean to the armed robbery earlier that morning.

McKean has been charged with armed robbery, wearing a disguise with intent to commit a crime, possession of stolen property, two counts of failing to appear and driving without insurance.

You really have to drink that Kool-Aid Do you remember the story of the old religious cult from 1978 that ended in a mass-suicide in Jonestown, Guyana? Jim Jones, the leader of the group, convinced his followers to commit suicide by drinking grape flavoured KoolAid laced with potassium cyanide. It’s a tragic story, where 913 of the 1,100 Jonestown residents drank the Kool-Aid and died for a religious belief that was - to put it lightly - questionable.

This tragic story however has shifted in meaning over the years to mean two things - either stay away from goofy things that make no sense or embrace this great new thing. “Do not drink the Kool-Aid” is a warning to avoid something that makes no sense and will actually do you harm.

Today I am talking about the positive version of the term - the fact that you, ‘need to drink the Kool-Aid’, and the group I am saying you need to join is the health and fitness cult. It’s funny and a little sad that folks think fitness and health is a cult or anything other than a smart idea - but then again, I drank the Kool-Aid back in 1998.

It is indeed a challenge for people like me, people passionate about changing the world, about sharing how great it is to be fit and healthy, to speak to regular folks who have clearly not drank the Kool-Aid. It’s like we are aliens, speaking a different language. As a trainer, speaker and enthusiastic health nut it is easy for me to assume that everyone understands that eating well and exercising is logical, smart and the natural thing to do. But it is easy to forget that most people do not feel that way any more.

When we get a new client in the gym or I speak to a group of people (as I did last week, speaking to the staff at Progressive Waste Solutions), I need to share the experience of being fit and healthy and ultimately, encourage a

McDERMOTT group of people to drink the KoolAid. My job is to tell the story of when I was fat and sick, stressed and unhealthy, eating for fun, living on sugar and fat, sitting around letting my greatest gift -

my body. Then I need to show the benefits of being more healthy, more alive and having more fun, and hopefully, have people see the need to drink the Kool-Aid. I think most people get that eating well and moving your body is the right thing to do - so why don’t they? Why are most people out of shape? Why is obesity an epidemic? Why are we losing this battle?

To be honest the other kind of Kool-Aid leaders are out there too

– and they have bigger budgets than I do. I write a little newspaper article trying to help you see the benefits of living a great life. They have SuperBowl commercials telling you how great their chemical crap product will taste, how cool you will look and how fun it is to be part of their cool group. People drink that Kool-Aid in gallon buckets.

Every grocery store, gas station, fast food restaurant and convenience store is full of anti-

health items masquerading as food. But I am asking you to trust me.

Drink the Kool-Aid that will not result in you committing suicide over time. Back in the 80s there was a saying – “Choose life.” I am asking you to drink the health and fitness Kool-Aid, and have a great life with me.

Hunting Hills to host international cultural fair

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express Students and staff at Hunting Hills High School are gearing up for a first-hand look at a range of cultures via the Hunting Hills Multi-Cultural Fair, set for May 28th at the school. The event, which will feature a multitude of booths, games, activities plus delicious treats, runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the gathering area. It’s ideal for the whole family, complete with activities for the kids as well.

“What we are trying to do is highlight the amazing multi-cultural characteristics of our school, and to celebrate culture within our school,” said Arlee Oprenchok, a world history and social studies teacher

at the school, who also coordinates the Diversity Club. The event is open to everyone, including students who will be attending Hunting Hills in the future. “The language classes, world history classes, and the Diversity Club, our FNMI Group (First Nation, Métis and Inuit), are also participating as well our international students.”

Students who have been on school trips, such as to China and Spain, will have the opportunities to incorporate those experiences into their presentations as well.

CARE (Central Alberta Refugee Effort) representatives will also be onhand to run their refugee camp simulation, which gives visitors the chance to see something of what displaced people experience.

Oprenchok said she wants people to see

the school’s passion for learning about others and the amount of care they have for other people. “It’s also about looking at similarities between people rather than differences, in a world where we very often focus on how we differ.”

Various sponsors are also providing samples of cuisine, something for which organizers are very grateful, she added.

Samples will provide a ‘taste’ of a stream of cultures. It’s a reflection of a changing community demographic, too. “I have a Social 20 class and a quarter of the students weren’t born in Canada. So they come with an amazing wealth of understanding that enriches the classroom.

Leah Stella, an English and Spanish teacher at the school, agreed the fair is a

great means of engaging the students who have traveled abroad – she took 40 students to Spain this past March.

“Our booths will be here, we will have music playing, there will be a slide show, visitors can talk to the kids who are running their booths, there will be games in the library that kids can take part in.

We’re really hoping people come out – it’s definitely educational and family-oriented.

“We really also to showcase our school in terms of being a leaders in global citizenship, so people keep looking at Hunting Hills and saying, ‘Yes, they know what it is to be accepting, understanding and have a world outlook and a focus that is one of having a broader view’.” editor@reddeerexpress.com

Mother’s advice was right, that teeth should be brushed after every meal.

But mother can’t be expected to be perfect, and what she didn’t know causes gum disease (gingivitis).

What happens is gums become infected and pull away from teeth, forming deep pockets where bac-

teria accumulate. And for want of good gums, the result may be bad breath, infection, lost teeth and other health problems.

Infection lurking in diseased gums can spread in blood circulation to the heart, causing a condition called bacterial endocarditis. When this happens, bacteria infect the heart’s valves which separate the chambers of the heart.

This can be a life-threatening condition. For example, bacteria can travel to the brain causing a stroke.

Or bacteria carried by the blood can create pockets of pus in the kidney and other organs.

Bacterial endocarditis, if left untreated, can, on rare occasions, result in either severe disability or death.

Valves infected by bacteria become inefficient allowing some blood to remain in the heart’s chambers. This makes the heart’s muscle work harder and eventually death results from congestive heart failure.

Several years ago a Scottish Health Survey re-

vealed those who had gingivitis showed an increase of C-Reactive Protein and fibrinogen in their blood.

The blood tests indicated a general inflammatory process was taking place in arteries. Researchers concluded this resulted in a 25 to 75% increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

A report from the Mayo Clinic says gingivitis has even been linked to premature birth and low birth weight.

But what was lacking in mother’s advice? Unfortunately she had not read enough history to provide the best information about preventing gingivitis.

In the 15th century Professor Givanna of Padua University suggested, “If all particles of food were removed from between teeth after each meal and the mouth cleaned night and morning, care could be effective”.

Mothers were unaware children and adults can brush their teeth a dozen times after each meal and food will still be left be-

tween them. This no man’s land between teeth traps food, promotes infection, pulls gums away from teeth and destroys the tough periodontal fibers that hold teeth in place.

The solution to preventing gingivitis is easy and obvious.

Some prefer using dental floss. But for years I’ve preferred Stim-U-Dents, similar but better than toothpicks, to remove particles of food from between teeth.

And in my 92nd year I have not lost a single tooth.

Years ago I realized how hard it is to get preventative health messages across.

I spent several days aboard the USS Nimitz, the nuclear aircraft carrier.

The average age of the crew was 19 and it required seven dentists on board to repair dental decay in 6,000 sailors!

ENTERTAINMENT Zerbin brings brand new tunes to City show

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express On May 24th, Victoria-based band Zerbin will be heading to Red Deer to play Bo’s Bar & Grill.

The guys (Jason Zerbin and Peter Mol) released their highly-anticipated CD Darling on April 14th and they’re following it up with a cross-Canada tour. Their new record was produced by the band and mixed by Dave Pensado (Michael Jackson, Beyonce, Elton John) and Tom Dobrzanski. Duran Ritz was also part of the band through the process, but chose to leave post-release.

From the start, the disc shines with all kinds of terrific sounds – from the instantly-engaging disc opener Real Time which flows seamlessly right into the rhythmic, punchier sensibilities of tunes like C’est La Vie and Shoulder. Other highlights include Worlds on Fire, the comparatively plaintive and very stripped-down feel of the title track and the bubbly tones of Kids in the Forest.

“To me, it’s our true debut,” explains Zerbin, adding that he and Mol have been collaborating for about four years. “It started as a solo project of mine and Peter joined as a drummer. As things started to progress, we also started to write together, too. So it started then to form into what Zerbin is today with us collaborating and Peter moving to guitar and us co-writing all of the stuff.”

The guys had also released an EP called Touch back in 2013.

Touch secured them a number of EMAs and the single New Earth garnered a spot on alt-rock charts, moving on to be chosen for a variety of international film and TV spots - they have spent the past two years sharing stages with the likes of Bruno Mars and Arcade Fire.

Looking back, Zerbin recalls his interest in music in general as one that was sparked early on. He grew up in a musical family, and he took guitar lessons through his younger years as well. And although much of his exposure to music was a bit limited in those years – it was mainly church and worship music – that interest in further exploration didn’t waver.

But it did at times take a back seat to sports. Zerbin said he didn’t really get rolling with the music side of things till later in high school and in his early college years.

ORIGINALITY - On the heels of a recent CD release Darling, Zerbin is excited to be hitting the road in support of the project.

“I always feel a bit like a late bloomer into the whole thing, but I love it now. It’s what I was made to do,” he said. “It wasn’t until later that I started to develop my own taste and tap into some broader influences.”

Getting used to playing in front of people wasn’t much of an obstacle, thanks to his days of playing in church services.

“It gets you comfortable with playing in front of crowds – and many times these are larger crowds than many bands ever play for,” he explained. “For us as a band, and me personally, the larger the audience the more comfortable we are. But performing came out of songwriting, and a desire to share the music that we were creating and the joy that comes from people experiencing that.”

Meanwhile, the guys’ dedication has certainly paid off. Zerbin received two 2012 Edmonton Music Awards: Music Video of the Year and Single of the Year, for New Earth. In July of 2014, New Earth was

also voted #51 out of the Top 102 Canadian Songs by listeners of Edmonton’s modern rock radio station SONiC 102.9.

And to top it off, Zerbin was selected as Band of the Month for July of last year by the Victoria modern rock radio station The Zone @ 91-3 as well as by Edmonton’s SONIC 102.9 this past March.

“We’ve learned over the years to work well together,” he said of merging the differing creative visions as the recording process unfolds.

“Sometimes we hate each other’s ideas – there can be tension and conflict in the midst of the writing process, but you grow up and learn to respect and you learn that what others bring to the table can make your ideas better,” he said.

“I tend to bring a bulk of stuff to the music, and Peter tends to bring more flavour – these tweaks and licks and colour.

“Our style of lyrics diverges quite dramatically. Because I sing it, it’s got to be

something that makes sense to me and works, so there tends to be tweaking until it works.

“For me, the majority of the time, the lyrics come second to the melodies,” he said. “It’s almost like a paleontologist chipping away until you find the actual fossil – it’s how it kind of feels with songwriting.

You chip away – for me, I throw a lot down and then chip away to find the actual song in all of it.”

Meanwhile, even though Darling is essentially brand new, the guys are already looking ahead.

“We’ve done this record, and already we’re talking about the next EP – dropping it as soon as we can.” The plan, in fact, is to head into the studio this summer and work on a fresh new slate of tunes. “We don’t want it to be another couple of years between things – maybe more like a space of six months.” editor@reddeerexpress.com

Roxanne Potvin including City on current tour

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express Singer/songwriter Roxanne Potvin always loved music, but she first had aspirations of hitting the stage in dramatic fashion. The gifted, Montreal-based artist performs May 23rd at The Olive.

As mentioned, although she grew up in a home where there was plenty of music to enjoy, she originally had a passion for acting. But then in her mid-teens, she started penning a few of her own tunes, and gradually that penchant for acting turned into a desire to perform her own tunes.

It’s proven to be successful path for the engaging singer, who has also landed a couple of Juno Award nominations along the way as well.

She’s recorded with John Hiatt, Daniel Lanois, Colin Linden, Bruce Cockburn, Wayne Jackson, Bob Babbitt, Dave Mackinon, Steve Dawson, a duet with Colin James and has opened for John Hiatt, Blue

Rodeo, Allen Toussaint, the Neville Brothers and the Funk Brothers among many others.

Meanwhile, she’s touring B.C., Alberta and Ontario through May. “Music was always around me as a kid – lots of it in the house,” she explains during a chat from Vancouver. “I remember from very early on loving music, and getting lost in my dreams listening to albums.” There are pictures of her as a toddler with earphones on, relishing what she’s hearing, she laughs.

“Music was always a companion, but I never saw it as a career option until much later on – when I was about 18. I didn’t sing onstage until I was about that age.”

She was also a huge fan of the Beatles, even as an adolescent – when most of her friends were listening to Nirvana, Hole, Rage Against the Machine and such.

“I would say, can we put a Beatles record on? And they would all look at me funny.”

Potvin opted more often for the oldies –

music that her parents had enjoyed – like pop from the 50s and 60s as well.

“I would go in phases – and have (musical) obsessions that would last about a year,” she recalls. “My first big inspiration was the Beatles when I was about 13 or 14.

That’s when I discovered the Beatles, was at about that age.

“I also got into the blues around the time I was 15.” She also liked Elvis and Little Richard, and legends like the Everly Brothers as well. “I was always sort of drawn to it – the rock and roll of the 1950s. So when I discovered the blues, I thought, oh that’s where a lot of this stuff comes from! It was kind of a full circle moment there.”

Eventually, when it came time to choosing a career path, she knew acting just wasn’t going to cut it.

“I knew that I wanted to do music.”

She took some lessons over the years in guitar and voice, and ultimately has worked hard to find her own way as a songwriter and an artist.

“That’s when I really cut my teeth, learned electric guitar and also learned to play onstage,” she said. And it’s been a productive period ever since.

A walk through her discography will take listeners on a stylistic journey from blues, R&B and folk on Juno-nominated, Colin Linden-produced The Way it Feels to the soul and pop of No Love for the Poison-

ous and the keyboard-laden, atmospheric folk and garage rock sounds of Play.

It was after touring Play for about a year that she decided it was time for something a bit different, so she took some time off and headed back to school to study sound engineering. After wrapping up her studies, she picked up her notebook and guitar once again, working away at what is to be her fifth full-length disc.

These days, she sums up her style as roots-pop, and as to the new project, she’s looking at a release sometime in early 2016.

Still at the demo stages, her new songs – she’d like to have about 30 or so done when she heads into the studio – are first person snapshots of life among friends and lovers. The witty garage-folk attitude of Play makes a few appearances and melody is at the forefront, she said.

She has recorded an EP with a few of the songs – only available on the current tour. Fans will have to wait until the new CD comes out to hear the complete selection of tunes.

“I’m super excited and happy to be out here – I tend to not sleep a lot on tour because I’m so excited. Everything is fun - I love being on tour, seeing different places and meeting different people. And I totally feel that’s what I’m supposed to be doing. I feel like it’s my place.” editor@reddeerexpress.com

Alberta-based singer/songwriter Leeroy Stagger is hitting the road in support of his 10th studio album Dream It All Away, with a Red Deer stop slated for May 27th at Fratters Speakeasy.

Notre Dame Cougars takes down Hunting Hills Lightning

BY JENNA SWAN Red Deer Express The Notre Dame girl’s rugby team shut out the Hunting Hills Lightning on Friday afternoon with a final score 34-0.

The game was one of the last of the regular season for Zone 1 teams as the schools head into zone finals next week.

Following Friday’s win, the Cougars are on the road to Olds and Rimbey, but will return on Monday to face the Lightning again in the Zone 1 semi -finals with the winner moving on to face Lindsay Thurber on May 27th in the City finals.

The winner of Wednesday’s game will then move on to represent the central zone at the 4A Provincial Tournament on June 5th and 6th at Ellerslie Rugby Park in Edmonton.

Head Coach of the Cougars Ian Rattan said the win last Friday couldn’t have come at a better time for the girls adding he believes the strong season they’ve had came from the foundations built in their preseason.

With a good mixture of returning and new players, Rattan took to the road with the girls and ventured to Kamloops during their preseason in April where they played a weekend tournament.

“It was fun for the kids being able to play some bigger teams,” said Rattan.

“With B.C. starting their season in the beginning of January it meant we got some really quality games in before the start of our regular season.

“We end up losing our last game at the end of the tournament to a team from Seattle who finished

Over the years he has spent with rugby in Red Deer, Rattan said he has watched the league develop with the City teams growing continuously stronger and rural teams such as Rocky Mountain House joining their league as well.

“The teams seem to be rounding out a bit more as the years go on. Thurber is always quite good with Bill Bowd, who also coaches the women’s Titans team on the bench for the Raiders and Justin Pilgrim joining as the Hunting Hills coach - the competition is always increasing,” he said. “Rural teams like Lacombe and Rimbey always give us a

Local kayaker has sights set on world championships

BY JENNA SWAN Red Deer Express A local athlete reached his goal of making it to the World Junior Kayaking Championships in Foz do Iguassu, Brazil earlier this month.

Notre Dame High School student Darius Ramrattan, 17, began kayaking six years ago, shortly after setting his goal of making it to the international competition.

The road to Brazil led Ramrattan to Ontario over the summer where he placed second overall in team tryouts for the Canadian Junior Kayaking team.

This guaranteed the young kayaker his ticket to Brazil and the chance to complete the goal he had set, which had been inspired by a former teammate Levi Severtson.

“A guy I used to train with (Severtson) made the junior national team four years ago,” said Ramrattan. “So when he got to go to his junior worlds I just thought that would be so great and so I set my sights on Brazil.”

‘I WANT TO MAKE SEMIFINALS IN POLAND THIS TIME AROUND.’ DARIUS RAMRATTAN Although his parents were wary to see their son travel to Brazil for three weeks, they were in support of their son’s drive and ambition – leaving him in the care of coaches Mike Holroyd and Paul Manning-Hunter.

Although Ramrattan did not do as well as he had hoped on the international platform, he was overall

pleased with the experience in which he competed alongside over 500 athletes from around the world.

“The top female at the competition was an Olympic medalist and the top male is a senior world champion,” he said, of the world championship. “The people who were there were the best of the best for their countries.”

Overall Ramrattan finished 71st in the World Junior Kayaking Championship, explaining it was more his mental game that needed work at the competition than it was his skill.

After leaving Brazil he was happy to get his first world stage out of the way, and feels he is more prepared going into next year’s competition.

“After Brazil I have set my goal for next year as not just making it to the 2016 world championships in

Looking into the future he hopes he one day makes it to the Olympic stage perhaps in 2020 or 2024.

With kayaking not holding a prominent place in Central Alberta, the young athlete explained the number one question he is asked by those curious about his chosen sport is a simple one – what do you do?

“The answer is simple - we race down rivers,” he added. “Usually they are artificial, like the one in Brazil that was 100 per cent artificial.

“The fastest person through the 23 gates wins with a two second penalty for touching the gate and 50

second penalty if you miss a gate.”

While working towards finishing Grade 11 at Notre Dame, Ramrattan has high hopes for his future adding he enjoys applying the focus and determination he has gained from kayaking to his studies and hopes to further his education and one day study medicine.

For Ramrattan the rest of the summer will be packed with river runs in Kananaskis for training with appearances at both nationals and provincials over the course of the next six months then on to Krakow in 2016. jswan@reddeerexpress.com

Keeping the hiccups of home design in perspective My heart is not here this week, wanting so badly to assist the citizens of Nepal after reading about the devastating earthquakes has left me with no design inspiration or enthusiasm and I should apologize in advance for not being able to provide you with any perky or optimistic design advice.

When I have witnessed photos of flattened homes and children who have no place to sleep it gives me an unavoidable ache in my heart when I think about what we complain about and what we take for granted in our beautiful, safe country.

It is truly about our perspective and our gratitude with what we have been blessed with, isn’t it? Doesn’t there come a time when we need to take a look around and experience a deep and profound gratitude for our homes and our ability to make them absolutely beautiful?

Is it because they are fixated on every small detail or is it more of a self-fulfilling prophecy? Those clients who are romanced by the process of redecorating or design are more likely to enter the final space with an open heart and a deep breath as they truly enjoy the beautiful space they have helped create.

I’m not sure I can accurately describe why some clients appreciate and allow themselves to positively experience their homes while others only see the flaws.

Possibly a personality type or maybe some people are looking at their homes or

their decorating projects from a perspective of perfection – that they can’t possibly be happy or satisfied if there is one flaw in the hardwood or that the battle to have a single slightly off tile removed from the middle of the bathroom floor will make them more relaxed.

It is true that some personalities would be bothered by slight irregularities in their product choices and I find that hardwood and tile are the two main culprits in causing people unhappiness.

Take a look around your home and ask yourself if you can peacefully live with your house in the condition it is currently in. I’m not saying to accept shoddy workmanship or damaged materials but to take a breath and consider those around the world who do not currently have homes and look at it for a few moments from another perspective.

A committed contractor or sub contrac-

tor will work with you to fix your concerns but sometimes, just sometimes I think we can let a few things slide in the greater scheme of things and still be happy and grateful in our homes.

The best design advice I can give you this week is to loosen up a bit, ease up on that white knuckle hold you have on your contractor’s neck (or wish you did!) and know that everything is going to be alright and that soon you will have a beautiful new home or space.

You are one of the fortunate ones to have four walls standing even if you are pulling your hair out over the perfect paint hue.

Eventually everything works out and hopefully you have had a pleasant time arriving at your ideal space, and you can if you practice perspective in all situations, even the very frustrating ones.

counts you are using to make up the down payment, a void cheque and governmentissued ID. If you are self-employed you will also need two year’s T1 Generals and two year’s financial statements.

Specialty documentation you may need depending on your situation includes divorce/separation agreement, bankruptcy discharge documents, proof of debts/collections paid, proof of taxes paid, mortgage statement and offer to purchase on your current home; lease agreements, mortgage statements, property tax bills on any rentals.

Apply – it’s time to do the application.

You are going to be asked a series of questions and your credit is going to be pulled.

Here are the criteria the lenders are using.

Two trade lines reporting for two years – a trade line can be a credit card, a line of credit, a vehicle loan but ideally you should have one credit card and the other can be any of the others; no late payments; you are not exceeding 75% of your available credit limit and you have normal levels of credit inquiries.

I will tell you credit cards and mortgages now report on your credit bureau so make sure they are both paid on time every month. Information is abundant these days so it is easier than ever to familiarize yourself with mortgage lingo.

You are signing a binding contract for a time frame of one to10 years so taking an hour up front to understand the terms is a good idea.
