CITY Taking the stage my

The Canada Day Kickoff Concert at the Abbotsford Centre on June 30 is a familyfriendly event leading up to Canada Day. The musicians scheduled to perform are strictly Canadian – with local connections – including Aaron Pritchett, King & Cash, and Beamer Wigley originating from B.C., and Alberta-born band Emerson Drive headlining the celebration. Sharing the stage will also be the winner of this year’s Abbotsford Idol Contest presented by Finnegan’s Grill and The Abbotsford News. “For me personally, it’s still the best part of the job!” says Emerson Drive frontman, Brad Mates, on performing live. “The amount of shows we’ve done throughout the past 20 years makes going on stage feel like a safe place to be.” Since their inception in 1995, Emerson Drive has been cranking out hits on the country music scene and getting audiences ramped up across North America with their footstomping stage presence. Throughout their career they have scored numerous hits, including I Should Be Sleeping, Fall Into Me, Last One Standing and their emotionally charged ballad Moments – a 2007 hit that boosted their careers and solidified Emerson Drive as a force to be reckoned with.

MAIN EVENT

Twelve-year-old singer and songwriter, Beamer Wigley will take the stage to perform an acoustic set that features both original and cover songs.

Aaron Pritchett will be one of the performers at the Canada Day Kickoff Concert on June 30 at Abbotsford Centre

Leading up to the concert, Finnegan’s Grill in partnership with The Abbotsford News will run a four-week talent contest to decide the next Abbotsford Idol. The lucky winner will be crowned at Finnegan’s Grill on June 23 and get the opportunity to perform in an opening slot at the Kickoff Concert, as well as other prizes.

“Anyone coming to our shows can expect a high-energy performance, with songs they have heard on the radio over the past 13 years,” says Mates.

after my show is over.”

Also set to perform is country star Aaron Pritchett of Pitt Meadows, known for bringing “rock energy” to his intense stage show.

“Believe in yourself, never stop getting better, and remember that there is always something more to learn,” he says.

“I love being on stage and putting on the best show I possibly can, so the fans in Abbotsford will hopefully get to feel like they’re up there with me!” says Pritchett. “Without a doubt my favourite song to play has to be Hold My Beer. When we break into it I get a rush of adrenaline that lasts even long

The country duo King & Cash is also set to perform at the Kickoff Concert. The group is fronted by former lead guitarist of the pop rock band Faber Drive, Jordan Pritchett of Mission – who has decided to follow in his father Aaron Pritchett’s footsteps and pursue country music.

His advice for artists aspiring to “make it big” in the music industry – like those competing in Abbotsford Idol – is to be tenacious.

“The weekly pool of competitors will perform acoustic songs, with the winners of each week moving on to the final competition round, that will have King & Cash as guest judges,” says director of booking and events at the Abbotsford Centre, Corey Margolis. Abbotsford and Fraser Valley residents are invited to kick up their boots, dance, and sing along to the music of notable Canadian musicians along with the next Abbotsford Idol at the upcoming Canada Day Kickoff Concert. The event gets underway at 6 p.m. Tickets start at $15 plus applicable fees. For more information, visit abbotsfordcenter.ca

In today’s busy world, it can sometimes be difficult to make well-informed decisions about proper and sufficient sun-protection. The best way to protect your skin from the dangerous effects of UV radiation is to make sun protection part of your daily routine. Here are some facts that will break it down and help you make the best decisions for you… Look for a physical sunblock as opposed to a chemical sunscreen. Physical sun blocks contain ingredients such

as Titanium Dioxide or Zinc Oxide – they protect your skin from the sun by deflecting or blocking the sun’s rays. Chemical sunscreens, such as Avobenzone or Helioplex, work by absorbing the sun’s rays. With this absorption into the skin, chemical filters tend to be more irritating to skin and some can cause allergic reactions. Look for a sunblock with SPF 30. For best results, apply the sunscreen 30 minutes before sun exposure and reapply every 1-1/2 to 2 hours, even on cloudy days and after swimming or sweating. SPF 30 sunscreens block nearly 97 percent

of UV rays, where sunscreens above SPF 50 block about 98 percent. Therefore, the benefits of using an SPF higher than 30 are negligible and do not outweigh the negative of a higher chemical component. Other ways to protect yourself from UV radiation are to limit sun exposure between 11 AM and 4 PM and especially around midday, wear widebrimmed hats, and try to plan activities in the shade as much as possible. Remember to stay informed, read the product label ingredients, always follow the instructions, and stay sun-safe!

Hassle-Free Beauty Tips It’s a common misconception that in order to look your best, you need to devote ample time in front of the mirror each morning. However, looking your best is much simpler than it sounds. Here are a few shortcuts to help look great in no time at all!

INSTANT BEAUTY PICK-ME-UP Feeling a little run down? With just a few quick fixes, you can easily appear more rejuvenated and refreshed! All it takes is a pop of colour on your face — on your eyes, cheeks or lips — to give your overall beauty look a complete boost.

MULTITASKING LIP GLOSS In addition to giving your lips a nice shine, pearly white lip gloss can be used as a highlighter on your cheek and brow bones.

SUPER SIMPLE SMOKEY EYE

Seamlessly transition to an evening look in no time at all! Rim your lash line with black or gray eyeliner. Then dust brown or gray shadow all over your lid and crease, making sure to blend the colour up and outward. Lastly, to complete your hasslefree dramatic eye look, apply two coats of black volumizing mascara and you’re out the door!

HAIR FIXES Dress up your ‘do in about 30 seconds with a simple hair accessory. Cute hairpins, clips and headbands can dress up your hairstyle with virtually no effort at all. Heading out after the gym and don’t have time to shower? Spritz a little perfume on your locks to mask any odor.

If you’ve never cooked with fennel, its a great way to experiment with it as it’s delicate flavour doesn’t overpower the dish. You’ll need a few fresh ingredients like fennel and parsley, but you’ve likely got a handful — or more — of the ingredients in your pantry or refrigerator right now.

Arrange the shrimp in a single layer on the tomato mixture, and sprinkle with the breadcrumb mixture. Bake until the shrimp are cooked through and the cheese is melted, 12 to 15 minutes. The Farmer and the Foodie practices. Our Selva black tiger prawns are Ocean Wise approved, ranked a green “Best Choice” by SeaChoice, and sustainably raised in Vietnamese mangrove forests, allowing for the farming of shrimp without cutting mangroves. By maintaining a functional ecosystem of mangrove forests and aquatic species, shrimp are raised using the natural productivity of the surrounding forest habitat with no added feed, fertilizers and chemicals necessary.

Why Ocean Wise Prawns? We love our prawns! In recent years, the popularity of imported prawns has rocketed sales of this tender crustacean to account for one quarter of North America’s entire seafood consumption. However, well-respected news sources are also increasingly reporting of less-than-favourable conditions of fish-farmed prawns, including filthy pond water, unregulated antibiotic use, destruction of coastal habitats in SouthEast Asia, and worker exploitation and child labour necessary for harvesting. While BC’s cold, pristine waters host our famous spot prawns, the growing demand and willingness to pay any price by overseas markets means few of our premium prawns are sold locally. Therefore, it’s important for us at Lepp Farm Market to provide you with prawns raised using environmentally sound and community friendly

Delicious recipes like this means we want to continue eating tasty prawns, but we can consciously choose a product with the least harmful effect on the environment and the greatest benefit to the farmer, mer, whether here in our own backyard or in EXP OUR LORE oceans far away. F

It’s just the fact that it’s such an exciting event to be a part of in Abbotsford.” Abe has been handing out race medals at the finish line since it began 8 years ago. “It’s one of my favourite things to do all

Add years to your pet’s life with a raw food diet SARA GALLANT TAIL BLAZERS, Health Food Store for Pets

The most common comment people make after switching their pet to raw food is that there is way less poop! And, that the poop doesn’t smell nearly as bad! Sure, that’s a great side benefit, but what that means is that our pets are using and absorbing more of their food, improving their health and vitality. Raw food is also much easier and faster to digest than kibble, and that means dogs with gas, diarrhea and other

digestive upset, and bad breath may no longer experience these problems. Raw fed cats and dogs have defined muscle tone and weight problems often resolve. Doggie odour disappears, noticeably less tartar and plaque, fewer ear infections, a new healthy energy, positive behavioral changes, less shedding, less severe allergic reactions, epileptic seizures can decrease, and the list goes on!

foods basically means that the food is as close to what your dog or cat would eat in the wild. This diet contains all of the needed nutrients in an easily assimilated form and is the healthiest diet they can eat!

A raw food diet is the most healthpromoting diet for canines and felines because it’s species appropriate. A species appropriate diet in regards to pet

Tail Blazers has a HUGE SELECTION OF RAW DIETS and our knowledgeable staff can help you find the right one!
