Opinion: What does support really mean?

by Brian Coombs City Council’s recent decision to put the old fire hall up for sale (and not to the arts council), despite saying it supports the arts is nothing new for the arts community. Artists and arts organizations have always had a ton of support— just not financially.

In a lot of cases, when people say they support the arts, they generally mean they ‘tolerate’ the arts. It doesn’t matter that they enjoy watching movies, or like listening to music or have a piece of art hanging on their wall, when it comes to the local arts scene, support means they are OK with its existence.

Just as long as it doesn’t expect any money.

And arts organizations have come to expect this over the years. An artist once pointed out that he, and other local artists, are always expected to donate their work for raffles and such when professionals like dentists or lawyers are never asked to donate their services.

He estimated that he had donated more than $10,000 worth of art for worthy causes over the years. He also noted that he was used to it.

This isn’t to say that there is not another way to support the arts. Back a short time ago, just over 600 people signed a survey stating that

they wanted the deer cull to go ahead. Despite city staff recommending that they wait until fall to try the cull again, Mayor Pratt said that, “The public spoke, it was 70 per cent in favour of a cull.” With those words, there was a renewed urgency to kill the deer and council voted in favour of an immediate cull.

While that incident has no bearing on the old fire hall, it did mark a precedent for City Council in that it appears to take petitions and surveys very seriously indeed.

Here at the Kootenay Advertiser, we are generally informed if someone is circulating a petition. After all, it is important to get the word out if you are doing something that requires public participation. But even though the city has had time for the news to sink in that the Cranbrook and District Arts Council will not be receiving any city financial (or other) support for their fire hall bid, no one has come to this office with any kind of petition for the city to change its mind.

As the city has set a pretty low bar for surveys and petitions, (around 650 signers), one would think that canvassers would have been hitting the streets trying to collect on all the ‘support’ that the arts council has.

And yet, no petitions have surfaced.

There are a few good reasons that the arts council could use to attract signatures as well.

To begin with, they have a history of actual support for the arts. They could also point out that even if the city has to put some yearly support behind the endeavour, there are things cities spend money on that reap no immediate financial benefit.

Sometimes cities build or support things to show prosperity and power and to cement their identity. Examples of such things include the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, the Pyramids in Egypt, or even the Calgary Tower (a very expensive building to house a fairly small restaurant) in Calgary.

They could even say that no one but them has expressed interest in the old fire hall and claim ‘dibs.’

Still, while there have been a few letters to the editor, at the time of this writing, no petition has been introduced in support of the arts council getting city help with the old fire hall. If one isn’t forthcoming, that will demonstrate without doubt that City Council was right in denying the arts council any help, no matter how small, in attaining the historic building.

No outpouring of signatures in favour of the Arts Council bid will also show the real level of ‘support’ that Cranbrook has for the Arts Council—and that is a sobering thought.

This past week the team at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital Renal Dialysis Unit welcomed the addition of a new wheelchair scale compliments of the East Kootenay Foundation for Health. The patient simply walks, or is wheeled, onto the weight platform and is weighed. The foundation provided $4,000 in funding thanks to generous donations received from EKFH’s annual Starlite Campaign.

The Financial Support Program is very well used in the Kootenays, due to our distance from major cancer treatment centres in BC, such as Kelowna and Vancouver, as well as Alberta treatment centres in Calgary and Lethbridge.”

After an unusually mild winter, many of the Society’s winter-oriented fundraising events were cancelled across the province. Wray notes the Society is especially grateful for the alternative Fun Derby.

“On behalf of the Canadian Cancer Society, I would like to offer my heartfelt thanks to JCI Kootenay, Fort Steele, all the businesses and organizations that donated to the event, and everyone who attended.

We look forward to an even bigger and better event next year.” With a better winter, the event will return to the ice next year.

“It was a great way to start off my degree in Kinesiology. I actually got hands on experience with equipment that most of the students at other schools don’t get introduced to until 3rd or 4th year,” she comments.

Staying close to home has its financial benefits as well. Tuition costs are lower than at many larger institutions and remaining local can save on accommodation and cost-of-living expenses. Add to that the numerous scholarship, bursary and award options available through the Financial Aid office and you’ll see that choosing a quality education at College of the Rockies also makes good financial sense.

Heather Hepworth has recently been appointed to the position of Dean, Health and Human Services at the College of the Rockies.

College of the Rockies Vice-President, Education and Applied Research Stan Chung is pleased to announce the appointment of Heather Hepworth to the role of Dean, Health and Human Services.

Hepworth, a Registered Nurse who holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Nursing, has served as acting Dean for the past 16 months.

“In her role as acting Dean, Heather has led many critical projects including nursing accreditation, the northwestern Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing conference,

and strategic plan development,” said Chung.

“The hiring committee applauded Heather’s broad and deep experience working with our degree, diploma and certificate programs.

We look forward to her continued contributions in the future.”

Prior to taking on the role of Dean, Heather worked as a nurse, a union vice-president, an instructor and department head.

“I am thrilled to be joining the dynamic management team at College of the Rockies.

I look forward to contributing to the implementation of the new

strategic plan and continuing to build relationships with community,” Hepworth said.

In her new role, Hepworth will oversee the Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Licensed Practical Nursing, Health Care Assistant, Dental Assistant, Kinesiology, and Child, Youth and Family Studies programs along with the East Kootenay Teacher Education degree offered in partnership with the University of Victoria.

and women’s sitting volleyball teams have been selected by Volleyball Canada for nomination to the Toronto 2015 Parapan American Games team after a training camp and tournament this past week in Montreal.

A total of 12 men and 10 women were named to the team along with head coaches Ray Sewell of Calgary (for the men) and Nicole Ban of Edmonton (for the women).

Of local note is Shacarra Orr, from Jaffray, who will be playing on the women’s team as a setter.

The Toronto 2015 Parapan Am Games will be an important tournament for Canada’s men’s and women’s national sitting volleyball teams as it is a direct qualifier for the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio. The Canadian men’s team took the bronze at the 2007 and 2011 Parapan Am Games, while this is a first major Games appearance for the women.

In men’s sitting volleyball, Canada needs

to finish first or second to Brazil to gain a berth for the Paralympic Games. The Brazilians already have a spot locked up as hosts.

“The Parapan Am Games being held in Toronto is a huge opportunity for parasport in Canada and for the continued development of sitting volleyball,” said Ray Sewell, head coach of Canada’s men’s team. “Our team has made big improvements over the last couple years and we are excited to prove that Canada continues to be competitive in the Pan Am zone. The addition of some younger athletes onto our team has given us a good balance of experience, youth and enthusiasm.”

On the women’s side, Canada needs to finish ahead of Cuba to qualify for Rio. Brazil is in as host and the U.S. automatically gained a berth by winning the gold medal at the world championships last year.

Ride "The Wave" in Cranbrook

We've had some of them for years and anybody that has grown them knows their beauty and easy to look after growing habits. We always get asked for them and everybody wants the petunias that just grow and grow. It all started with a basic purple wave, then pink, and then the colour choices just kept growing and growing. But aside from the different colors, all waves are not created equally. The growth habits vary a lot between varieties, so it's important for you all to know the differences. We can thank some little genius horticulturalists sitting down in Costa Rica for all these beauties.

1. Wave Petunias: 5-7 inches (13-18cm). These are the original spreading petunia. These beauties create a ground hugging carpet of color that can spread up to 4 feet. They can be used in baskets and containers, but have a low profile and very little poof on top. They are great for hanging over a wall. There are 6 colors with basic purple being the favorite.

2. Shock Wave: 7-10 inches (18-25cm). These have more petite flowers for smaller spaces. They have more of a mounding growth habit. These are great in mixed containers and smaller pots where you don’t want the wave to completely overtake you! There are 12 colors available.

3. Easy Waves: 6-12 inches (15-31cm). These guys are fast growing,with tons of blooms all season. They easily tolerate heat, but will also withstand a cooler spot better than most waves.

They grow with more of a mounding habit compared to an original wave, which makes them perfect for baskets and containers. They require very little care and cutting back. This year, there is an exciting new color series called the Velour Series. Berry, Burgundy and Red Velour are all new this year. I saw these at pack trials last year, and let me say, they are spectacular. And guess what.....we are growing all three this year. Numbers are limited so don’t snooze on getting these.

This entire series has 26 colors in it.

4. Tidal Waves: 16-22 inches (41-56cm). This variety came to be about 7-8 years ago. If you Google them, it will tell you to use them in a landscape setting or large containers. From my experience, they are fabulous in the right landscape setting, but DO NOT use them in containers! These guys are monsters! They grow tall and they spread. They are called the hedging petunia and that’s how they grow. Use them against a fence, your house, that ugly yard thing you want to hide or the neighbor you want to hide from!

I did a sloped bank in them 2 years ago, all in one color, and it literally stopped traffic going by. There are five colors in this variety.

5. Double Waves: 6-8inches (15-21cm). If you like frilly, then these are the ones for you. They have more of a spreading habit than mounding, but are somewhat less aggressive than regular waves. They are great in containers and I find some colors even have a nice scent. They come in 6 colors.

If you chose to grow any of these waves just remember this: Chose the appropriate variety for your spot or container Fertilize them very regularly with a good quality water soluble fertilizer. These little guys grow, so they need food!

They love sun and thankfully tolerate wind fairly well.

If they get straggly chop them off so they get growing nicely again.

So, if you want the latest sensation watch for the Velour Series. And also watch for these guys’ cousins: the wave pansies....they too, are lovely.

CBT unveils over $1.3 million in grants for area Thirty-nine projects have recently been granted a combined total of over $1.3 million from Columbia Basin Trust’s Environment Grants. Funds are also currently available for groups seeking grants of up to $10,000 for their environmental projects.

Groups are encouraged to apply as soon as possible at cbt.org/ applyenvironment. As funding is limited, applications will be considered as they arrive.

Projects needing more than $10,000 can apply for funding in the fall.

CRANBROOK CURVES CELEBRATES 15 YEARS OF SERVICING MEMBERS Curves is celebrating its 15th year of servicing members in Cranbrook. It was in May 2000 that the doors were first opened.

The BC Conservation Foundation is one of the groups that has received project funding. Its project involves conducting a study on the conservation of grizzly bears in the Flathead and Elk Valley and providing recommendations to improve human safety and reduce human-bear conflicts.

ment staff make conservation decisions for grizzly bears,” said Garth Mowat, Wildlife Research Biologist, BC Ministry of Natural Resources. “Because it is based on broad public participation, it educates the public about grizzly behaviour, biology and population trends.”

City reminds cyclists of rules of the road With the warmer temperatures more cyclists are now on the road.

It is also a good time to review some of the rules of the road with respect to riding a bicycle. Basically a person operating a cycle on a roadway has the same rights and duties as a driver of a vehicle.

Although there are certain sections under the Motor Vehicle Act specific to bicycles, for the most part the rules are the same. Some of the common offences that cyclists commit are; riding without a helmet,

riding on the sidewalk and not riding on the right side of the road.

There seems to be some confusion with respect to yielding to bicycles particularly at intersections and cross walks.

Unless the cyclist dismounts and walks they are considered a vehicle and should be treated as such. If there is a stop sign a cyclist must stop and yield to the cross traffic. If they get off the bike and walk, the vehicles must yield to them as they are now considered pedestrians.

Hugs: To the two ladies that I met at Elizabeth Lake. They were feeding the geese and goslings bread. I explained what happens to these birds.

They develop Angel Wing and grow too quickly thanks to high carbohydrates. This causes their wings to become deformed no longer making it possible for them to fly. This is irreversible and makes them food for prey animals. The poor things don’t stand a fighting chance. I appreciate that they waited long enough to hear the explanation of why we shouldn’t be feeding these birds. Thanks ladies!

Artists celebrate Kimberley’s mining past On Saturday, May 9, artists Tony and Twila Austin spoke at a public dedication ceremony for their new sculpture, ‘The Sullivan Mine Commemorative.’

The sculpture is welded mild steel and forged repousse and includes a large piece of ore.

“Twila and I believe public art is essential. It nurtures both the viewer and the artist and helps create a tangible sense of place. Public art, by its very nature should represent a continuum, linking the past to the

present and projecting into the future,” said Tony. “The Sullivan Mine Commemorative represents our legacy to the people and City of Kimberley, who have nurtured and supported us for the last 20 years.”

He then went on to thank Teck Resources Ltd., for co-funding the project with the City of Kimberley. He also thanked Kevin Redding and his crew for finding the jackleg used. He thanked the Regional District of East Kootenay and Columbia Ba-

Fill your fruit basket When people think about gardening and growing their own food, usually the first few things that come to mind are vegetables such as tomatoes, potatoes, and other green goodies. What people often forget about is their ability to grow their own fruit! Even in the East Kootenays where we can have some unfavorable weather conditions in the winter, we are still able to grow a wide range of fruits. From the smallest of fruits such as strawberries to large fruit bearing trees and everything in between there is some-

thing for everyone.

A summer favorite is always fresh strawberries. These delicious little snacks can be easily grown in a regular garden bed or even in a small container or hanging basket on a deck or patio. There are many varieties that grow well in this area and some of our favourites include Tristar and Eversweet!

Also remember, there are two types of strawberries; june-bearing and everbearing.

June- bearing varieties give you one main crop, towards the end of June. These are perfect if you are travel-

lers in the summer or ar heading to the lake.

Everbearing produce berries all summer, for the person that can’t get enough.

Raspberries are another easy, fruit bearing shrub you can plant here and reap the benefits. raspberries love good rich soil, a very sunny location and do require a fair bit of moisture so don’t be afraid to water well and mulch to help control weeds and retain moisture.

Joan J Raspberry is a new red everbearing thornless variety. It produces from midsummer until frost and

no more being poked when picking.

Blueberries are also something we can grow here. The biggest thing to remember about growing blueberries here is to keep the soil acidic. As a rule, our area is very alkaline or has a high ph. Blueberries like a acidic soil with a lower pH. Adding peat moss when you plant them and using acidic fertilizer regularly helps control the soil conditions. Also remember that you need two different varieties of blueberries in order to get pollination and fruit. Garden sulphur

is another great way to lower your ph lower.

Apple trees are also a nice addition to any yard.

Fortunately, the plant people have even developed trees for the small urban spaces often associated with city or new housing developments Varieties like Scarlett Sentinal and Golden Sentinal are great in pots on the deck or in the small space in the yard. They average about four feet in height. Another great addition to the apple family is the grafted or combo apple trees.

These are trees with several varieties of ap-

ples grafted on them.

These are wonderful if you live where no other apple trees exist, simply because they pollinate themselves.

Plums and cherries are also a great addition. There is a heavy producing series of sour cherry trees that was developed at the University of Saskatchewan called the Romance series. These are extremely hardy and self pollinating.

Italian Plums are prevalent everywhere in Cranbrook, and are a good choice if you are truly a plum lover, because once established, these trees produce a

lot of plums.

Trees like the Flemish pear are also hardy here, and while they produce scads of little pears, the taste is equivalent to that of store bought pears.

The choices are quite extensive as far as growing fruit here in the East Kootenays.

The key to any successful planting is to prepare the hole with good soil, provide adequate watering and to ensure you use Nurseryland Fruit and Berry Food specific fertilizer, since it contains the micronutrients that fruit truly need. Enjoy the harvest!

Harold G Eaton August 26 1941- May 11 2015 It is with deep sadness that the family of Harold Eaton announces his passing on Monday, May 11, 2015.

Harold was predeceased by his father Jack Eaton, mother Agnes Robinson, and brother Raymond Eaton.

On September 2, 1967, Harold married the love of his life and best friend Peggy. His memory will continue to live on through her love for him.

Harold will be greatly missed by his wife Peggy and his children Jody, Jonathon, and Clinton. He is survived by his brothers Lynn, Jack and Doug; and his sisters Doreen, Alexis, and Shirley. He is survived also by his grandchildren and numerous loving family members and friends.

Harold will be remembered for his love for his family, passion for his land and the cattle he raised on it, and his dedicated work ethic. He leaves his legacy through his family, his farm, and forty years of business at Cranbrook Flooring.

The Eaton Family welcomes you to join them for a celebration of his life on Saturday, May 16, 2015. The service will be at St. Mary’s Parish at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the local 4H Club.

Tyler was born in Okotoks, Alberta and moved to Cranbrook with his family in 2006. He graduated from Mt. Baker in 2011 and was pursuing a career in the oil and gas industry working in northern Alberta.

Tyler loved his sporting activities, especially playing hockey and golf and camping out with his brothers and sisters in the summer. He is survived by his father John and stepmom Anne Marie, his brothers Justin and Layton, sisters Tamara and Alysha. Tyler was predeceased by his mom Janice in 1999 and his grandfather and grandmother Walter Smits 2000, and Gelske Smits in 2013, and uncle Peter Smits 1977.

Tyler will be dearly missed by his many uncles and aunts, cousins, nephews and nieces and along with his many friends.

Tyler was loved by all and will be forever in all our hearts. Tyler you left us far too soon, and we will forever miss you and our hearts will ache with sorrow all the days of our lives. We love you and we trust that you are now safe in the hands of Jesus.

Memorial service to commemorate Tyler's life was held Thursday, May 7th at the Knox Presbyterian Church in Cranbrook, BC. The gravesite service was held in Okotoks Union Cemetery, Okotoks, AB on Friday, May 8.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Young Life of Cranbrook.

rides and a scavenger hunt. The Wildhorse Theatre also featured two showings of the popular animated movie Penguins of Madagascar.
