The election of a new provincial government may have left Sylvan Lake’s previously promised urgent care facility in limbo, but the pursuit isn’t over by any means.

Urgent Care Committee Chair Susan Samson assures that the work for the longawaited project is already in place — the priority now lies in getting the new government to recognize the town’s need for such a facility.

“We’ve done a needs assessment, a business plan and we have a really good understanding of how urgent care would be a good solution to extended wait times.”

“We have to get back on the radar, but the work is done, and the work is good.”

Samson distributed a notice last week advising stakeholders that the PC government’s urgent care announcement in April was “tied to a pre-election budget that never received second reading.”

“Therefore, the promise and the fund-

ing is no longer there,” she wrote.

Further clarity on the matter will arrive once budget and health ministry details become available, said Innisfail-Sylvan Lake MLA-elect Don MacIntyre, who will be sworn in later this month.

In the meantime, he says he’s well aware of the need, and is already working toward a solution.

“One of the first meetings that I have booked already is a meeting with (Sylvan Lake Mayor Sean McIntyre), and urgent care is top of the list on that agenda,” he said. “What I have asked of him and will be asking of the Urgent Care Committee is to let me know what they think our community needs for urgent care as opposed to what has been happening in the past, and that is the government telling us what we need for urgent care and then changing the rules every year.

“What I want to know is, from their perspective, what does Sylvan Lake need, and I’m going to run that as hard as I possibly can. That’s going to be my first order of business.”

Sylvan Lake Mayor Sean McIntyre assured urgent care remains the “numberone priority” for the town, despite a change in circumstances surrounding the project.

“The good news is we’re in direct contact with our duly-elected MLA now, and the moment that the government is in session and the NDP government is sworn in, you can bet that they’ll be hearing from us on a regular basis there as well,” he said. “It is an ongoing effort, and we made a lot of headway with the last government, and we expect that the new government will consider our data, will consider that communities that are smaller than us have hospitals, and will understand that a growing population like that in the Sylvan Lake area needs proper health services.

“Any good government I think will recognize that need and take moves to address it.”

Early-morning sexual assault suspect sought by police STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Police are seeking a male suspect in a case of attempted sexual assault in Sylvan Lake May 2.

Sylvan Lake RCMP responded to the complaint at around 5:41 a.m. after a female victim was allegedly approached while walking near 48 Avenue and 48 Street on her way to work.

The victim was grabbed from behind and carried

into an alley between 47 Street and 48 Street. Her assailant threw her to the ground, and eventually released her after she yelled that she would phone the police.

The suspect then fled the alley heading south.

Police say the male suspect is about six feet tall with a thin to medium build and facial hair on his chin.

He was wearing faded blue jeans and a black jacket or sweater with a hood over

his head, and emitted a smell of alcohol.

Nearby residents and businesses are asked to review any video footage they may have of the suspect, particularly between 4:30 and 6 a.m. the morning of the crime.

Those with information are asked to contact the Sylvan Lake RCMP detachment at 403-858-7200, or Crime Stoppers, for the option to remain anonymous, at 1-800-222-8477.

Alberta’s recently elected NDP enjoyed more support among younger Albertans than any other party, according to polls. Perhaps these younger voters had a hand in deciding the historic result.

There is some irony, then, that the NDP platform will substantially grow spending on retirees, while doing much less to address challenges faced by those under 45. Such generational disparity in provincial budgeting actually worsens the pattern of the former governing party, the Progressive Conservatives.

Under the PCs, Alberta had the largest age gap in social spending in Canada. The bulk of Alberta’s 2015/16 spending is delivered through healthcare ($18.9 billion), education ($7.5 billion), postsecondary ($5.8 billion) and human services, including services for the elderly, disabled and social assistance ($4.2 billion). Of this money, approximately $17,129 was budgeted for each Albertan age 65 plus. Only $7,489 is spent on each Albertan under 45.

Premier Rachel Notley plans to grow this age gap. Her platform increases yearly spending per retiree to more than $18,000, while leaving spending on those under 45 around $7,800. Alberta will soon spend $3,000 more per senior than Saskatchewan, the next most generous province, and $7,000 more than British Columbia. All the while, Alberta will spend less than

Saskatchewan per younger citizen, and only moderately more than B.C. No political party in Alberta, or elsewhere in Canada, breaks down spending by age.

As a result, Notley may not yet recognize that the NDP aspiration to grow medical care spending faster than other parties without growing revenue by a corresponding amount disadvantages younger citizens in two ways.

First, 41 per cent of the NDP’s $20-billion healthcare budget will go to services for the 11.5 per cent of the population age 65 plus. Medical spending on retirees adds up to more than Notley’s entire K-12 budget; one-third more than the entire post-secondary budget; and nearly double the entire human services budget.

Such health spending might be justifiable if Albertans were getting bang for the buck, because we want the best for our aging parents and grandparents. Alas, evidence shows Canadians spend more on medical care than many other rich countries, but get only middling or below average access to doctors, CT scans, MRIs and patient satisfaction.

All the while, doctors get above average remuneration.

Revenue is the second problem with the NDP approach to medical care, repeating a longstanding pattern in Canadian politics. People age 65 and older grew from 9 per cent of Canada’s population in 1976 to 15 per cent today, provincial and federal governments added $32.5 billion in annual medical

care spending for this age group. But governments did not increase revenue to pay for it.

Instead, governments held inflation-adjusted postsecondary spending relatively constant since 1976, even though twice as many young people pursue extra education to compete for jobs. Similarly, governments didn’t build a child care system, even though young Alberta women increased their labour force participation by 42 per cent.

The NDP platform continues the national tradition of making trade-offs between medical care spending for

retirees and investments in services that younger Albertans need more and more. A year from now, the NDP anticipates collecting an extra $815 million in revenue. More than 80 per cent will fund their commitment to even more medical care services for retirees, leaving little left over.

Small wonder Notley’s platform budgets only modest extra spending for grade school, postsecondary or child care by comparison with her healthcare increases.

In this, she aligns with the federal NDP. Federal leader Thomas Mulcair is running for national office on a platform

that would entrench the same generational inequity.

The Alberta election proved big political change is possible – inspiring evidence for younger Canadians who deserve a better deal from political parties. To get this better deal, we need to build a lobby to influence all parties well in advance of voting day. That’s the only way we will get political alternatives that don’t grow intergenerational unfairness.

Election results an unmatched victory for democracy in Alberta Dear Editor, Readers, imagine you are Jim Prentice! Now imagine you are an idiot.

But I repeat myself. (With apologies to Mark Twain.)

This is so very lasciviously lovely. It is time to rejoice. Rejoice not in the NDP victory in our province, but rejoice more so in the simple but indisputable fact we, the people, rule.

Congratulations to the voters Alberta. Many hearts dance with unadulterated ecstasy with our election results. Well done. This is an unmatched victory for democracy in this province.

Floor crossers and Prentice's appointments hammered at the polls.

Alberta voters, take a bow!

Politicians just have learned the electorate is more powerful than ivory towers and all the glitz and glitter that goes with it. The big bang you heard was the explosion of Prentice's plan to take over as PM from Stephen Harper

when he is done.

Thanks Jim for your brazen stupidity in calling an early election, your complete and total disregard for the electorate by accepting duly elected Wildrose MLAs, and for the absolute gall necessary to believe you and your cronies would not be punished for that disrespect.

And, finally, thanks for costing us thousands of dollars more by taking your ball and going home before the results were even finalized in your own riding. Does that cowardly quitter decision not remind you of the proverbial spoiled brat picked last for a playground pickup game? The action, again, speaks volumes of your me-me-me egotistical attitude with total disregard for your constituents or the electoral process.

Jim Prentice was never about the province. Jim Prentice was about Jim Prentice. Good riddance.

You've negotiated backroom deals

with Danielle Smith before. Certainly she has room under her rock for you until this disaster passes? You two deserve each other.

And, Stephen Harper, Albertans had better not see Prentice in that hallowed hall of entitlement called the Senate.

And what of Danielle? "The NDP surge would have happened regardless of anything I did folks. This is why I said conservatives needed to reunite. I wasn't joking," she tweeted.

Yes, Hell may have officially frozen over and pigs may fly in Alberta with this election result, but Danielle is still as dumb as ever. She will not, or cannot, accept the fact she ignited this entire movement by treating the electorate like it was her own toy. The result fits her so nicely.

The thought of Danielle Smith as premier of Alberta is enough to send chills through the body. Her egomaniacal tunnel vision is frightening.

And to Kerry Towle, for whom so many people worked tirelessly and endlessly to get her elected as a Wildrose MLA and despite her steadfast "I spoke with my constituents" reasoning for her crossing the floor, I have but one question.

Did both constituents you spoke with agree, or did the decision whether or not you become a turncoat have to go to a tie breaker?

"If we were in a third-world country, people would be taking up arms. Let's get off our asses and demand democracy be respected," I wrote in letters to the editor columns in five newspapers after the floor crossings.

The piper has been paid. The electorate wins. Democracy wins. To those who contributed in any way to this ground-breaking experience, group hugs all around.

Volunteers needed for triathlon events JASMINE O'HALLORAN-HAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Volunteers are needed for traffic control, to man intersections and to ensure runners and bikers stay on track during the eighth annual Best Body Sprint Triathlon/Duathlon May 24.

The Sylvan Lake Triathlon Club hosts the race, and about 100 volunteers are needed to help with the different events.

There are four highenergy races — a sprint triathlon, a duathlon, the children's Splash and Dash and the team sprint triathlon.

There are currently just over a dozen volunteers registered to help with the event.

Volunteer are strongly encouraged to register early by emailing volunteers@ sltc.ca.

Early registration means volunteers will likely receive their correct size of T-shirt.

Volunteers will work in short shifts, from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and race director Steve Miller said the more volunteers that help for the races, the shorter the shifts will be.

“The main issue is on the road where we have the bikes,” Miller said. “We do all left turns but we still have people controlling traffic at intersections and

corners.”

There are about 150 adults participating in the races this year, and 80 children participating in the Splash and Dash.

Adults participating in the sprint triathlon will swim 750 metres, bike for 25.5 kilometres and run for five kilometres.

Athletes in the duathlon will run for 10 kilometres and bike for 26.6 kilometres.

The Splash and Dash is a fun race for children 12 years old and younger. They will swim a single pool length, run one block and then ride a bicycle, tricycle or child's car for one block.

There will be a team sprint triathlon that men and women can race in together as well.

Miller said the most enjoyable volunteer positions are situated at the finish line where the participants finish their race, and those that involve watching the children participate in the Splash and Dash.

“There's a couple hundred people yelling and screaming at them to run faster,” Miller said. “It's quite interesting and it's definitely about the most fun. If you haven't been there you have to come.”

Red Deer County taxpayers will see a modest one per cent rate increase after county council approved the county’s 2015 tax rate bylaw last week. The bylaw approved remains unchanged from the one presented last month.

Overall taxation revenue in 2015 will increase 3.5 per cent — most of which will come from new development.

The rate increase means residential taxes will now sit at $374.06 for every $100,000 in assessed value — up from $371.40 in 2014. That translates to an increase of $13.30 for a $500,000-assessed property.

Non-residential rates will sit at $1,100.55 for every $100,000 — up from $1,090.70 in 2014. That means an increase of $49.25 on a $500,000 property.

Environmental, community and protective services levies will remain unchanged at 0.1590, 0.4000, and 0.5000, respectively, while the seniors housing levy will decrease from 0.0209 to 0.0200.

Of the county’s $67.7 million 2015 budget, $43.8 will come from taxation. Funded from it are road and infrastructure maintenance, water and waste management, community services and other county projects and initiatives.

County Mayor Jim Wood noted last week that he felt the budget is in line with county council’s strategic goals, and allows for competitive tax rates to be maintained.

Taxes are due by the end of June.

Police investigating area vehicles thefts

April 25 6:17 a.m. – RCMP were contacted in relation to the theft of a vehicle in Benalto.

The owner advised police that he started his truck and went back inside his residence to get his cell phone when someone entered his vehicle and fled the area.

Patrols were made however

the vehicle was not located.

An investigation is continuing.

April 25 5:26 p.m. – A rollover on Highway 781 south of Township Road 374 resulted in RCMP attendance.

The 24-year-old female driver was not injured and returned on foot to her residence. An investigation resulted in the female being charged with failing to remain at the scene of a collision.

11:55 p.m. – An altercation at a local liquor establishment on 46th Street in Sylvan Lake did not result in any charges. A 37-yearold Red Deer male and a 51-year-old Sylvan Lake male became involved in a

heated discussion which became physical resulting in minor injuries to the 51-year-old male. Neither male wished to pursue charges and agreed that it was a consensual fight.

April 26 12:51 a.m. – Police attended a bush party in the Bentley area. Approximately 50 young adults were located drinking around a bonfire on Range Road 14 near Machinery Road. The alcohol was poured out and the party cleared without incident. RCMP ensured that designated drivers were appointed in the group to drive all the participants home safely.

1:57 a.m. – Sylvan Lake RCMP received a call of a

possible intoxicated driver on Highway 20. A truck was witnessed in the ditch and then moving back onto the highway heading westbound toward the Highway 11 and Highway 20 intersection. A traffic stop was conducted on Highway 20 northbound. The male driver was observed to be exhibiting clear signs of intoxication. A 33-year-old Sylvan Lake male is charged with impaired driving and having a blood alcohol level over .08.

11:22 a.m. – A search was conducted of a residence on Peterson Way in Sylvan Lake after a call from an off duty police officer of a break in at the location. Members located one

male in the home. An investigation resulted in an 18-year-old Sylvan Lake male being charged with being unlawfully in a dwelling house. The same male is also charged with break and enter and possession of property obtained by crime in relation to a break in at a school in Airdrie whereby a large quantity of Apple products was stolen. A second male, aged 19, from Sylvan Lake is also charged with weapons offences, possession of property obtained by crime and the unauthorized possession of a firearm.

April 28 6:49 a.m. – An investigation is underway into the theft of a vehicle in the

Eckville area. The owner advised that her SUV was left unlocked and running in front of an address on 53rd Street. A male was witnessed entering the vehicle and fleeing the scene.

12:28 p.m. – A break and enter at a rural address in Lacombe County resulted in the theft of a van. The owner advises that the house and garage on the property located northwest of Eckville were unlawfully entered into and an old 1987 Chevy van was stolen.

The rear house door was forced open resulting in damage and the garage door was also entered into.

An investigation is currently underway.

So many people don’t realize what they are worth. Not monetarily, but personally. We are much more than the job we do, the wages we earn or the number and value of our possessions. Our value goes much deeper than that.

My favourite psalm is Psalm 139. Verses 13 to 16 say: “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”

The Lord God planned each one of us, and created each one of us, and we are “fearfully and wonderfully made”!

We are God’s Children, and, as such, are of great value.

When we think we aren’t worth much, we need to remember this, and remember that it is God whom we must please, and not any person, nor any standards set up by humans.

A well-known speaker started off his seminar by holding up a $20 bill. In the room of two hundred, he asked, “Who would like this $20 bill?” Hands started going up. He said, “I am going to give this $20 bill to one of you but first, let me do this.” He proceeded to crumple the $20 bill up. He then asked, “Who still wants it?” Still the hands were up in the air. “Well,” he replied, “What if I do this?” And he dropped it on the ground and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe. He picked it up, now all crumpled and dirty. “Now who still wants it?” Still the hands went into the air.

Police were called to Forhan’s Pharmacy in Eckville with alarms ringing just after 3 a.m. The suspect allegedly broke into the store, headed directly to the pharmacy area, lifted an undisclosed amount of med-

ication and fled before police arrived on scene.

Public Hearing TOWN OF SYLVAN LAKE NOTICE OF A PUBLIC HEARING REGARDING PROPOSED BYLAW NO. 1671/2015 Being a Bylaw to amend the Land Use Bylaw No. 1555/2010.

WHEREAS it is deemed necessary and expedient to amend Bylaw No. 1555/2010 in the manner hereinafter appearing: NOW THEREFORE, the Council of the Town of Sylvan Lake, in the Province of Alberta, duly assembled and under the powers conferred upon it by the Municipal Government Act, RSA 2000, Chapter M-26, and amendments there to, enacts as follows: (1) That this bylaw may be cited as the Land Use Amending Bylaw #1671/2015.

(2) That Bylaw No. 1555/2010, being the Town of Sylvan Lake Land Use Bylaw, is hereby amended: (a) In Part 2 Interpreting the Land Use Bylaw, Section 2.2 Definitions, by repealing the following definition: “holiday trailer” means a transportable unit intended for leisure accommodations, that is towed by a passenger plates vehicle and does not exceed 2.6 m (8.5 ft) in width, 3.84 m (12.6 ft) in height and 12.5 m (41 ft) in length, including the hitch, except 3.65 m (12 ft) in width when situated in a bare land condominium park; (b) In Part 2 Interpreting the Land Use Bylaw, Section 2.2 Definitions, by adding the following definition following the definition of “parking facility”: (c) “park model recreation unit” means a unit conforming to the applicable CSA standard, or equivalent, for Park Model Recreational Vehicles, built on a single chassis mounted to wheels that may be removed. A park model recreation unit cannot be placed on a basement or permanent foundation, and does not include manufactured homes or recreational vehicles; (d) In Part 2 Interpreting the Land Use Bylaw, Section 2.2 Definitions, by repealing the following definition: “recreation vehicle” means a motor home, camper, watercraft on a trailer, tent trailer or any form of a vehicle used or intended to be used for recreational or holiday accommodations; and replacing the definition as follows: “recreational vehicle” means a portable vehicular structure that is designed for the purpose of recreational travel, temporary dwelling and/or sleeping and includes, but is not limited to, travel and tent trailers, holiday trailers, fifth wheel trailers, motorhomes and watercraft on a trailer.

Utility trailers and truck campers attached to the box of a truck are not included in this definition; (e) In Part 2 Interpreting the Land Use Bylaw, Section 2.2 Definitions, by adding the following definition following the definition of “use”: “utility trailer” means a portable vehicular structure, enclosed or unenclosed, that is designed to be attached to or drawn by a motor vehicle and to transport property,

(f) In Part 6 Contravention and Enforcement, Section 6.3 Offences and Penalties, by repealing sub-sections 6.3.3 through 6.3.8, and replacing as follows: 6.3.3 Any person who contravenes the same provision of this Bylaw within 12 months after the date of first conviction, is liable to the specified penalties for such second, third or subsequent offence set out in Part 10 of this Bylaw.

6.3.4 If a person is found guilty of an offence under this Bylaw, the Court may, in addition to any other penalty imposed, order the person to comply with the Bylaw, or any license, permit or other authorization issued under the bylaw, or a condition of any of them.

6.3.5 Where a Bylaw Officer reasonably believes that a person has contravened any provision of this Bylaw, the Bylaw Officer may, in addition to any other remedy at law: (a) serve upon the person a municipal tag, in the form used by the Town, allowing payment of the penalty as set out in Part 10 of this Bylaw for the particular offence, which payment will be accepted by the Town in lieu of prosecution for the offence; or (b) issue a violation ticket in accordance with the Provincial Offences Procedures Act, R.S.A 2000, C. P-34 or as amended, allowing a voluntary payment of the penalty as set out in Part 10 of this Bylaw, or, requiring a person to appear in Court without alternative of making a voluntary payment.

The recording of the payment of a penalty made to the Town or the Provincial Court of Alberta shall constitute acceptance of a guilty plea, conviction of the offence, and imposition of a fine in the amount of the specified penalty.

6.3.6 Where a contravention of this Bylaw is of a continuing nature, further municipal tags may be issued by a Bylaw Officer 6.3.7 Nothing in this section shall prevent a Bylaw Officer from issuing a violation ticket requiring a Court appearance of the defendant, pursuant to the Provincial Offences Procedures Act, R.S.A 2000, C. P-34 or from laying an information in lieu of issuing a violation ticket.

6.3.8 Nothing in this Bylaw shall prevent or restrict a Bylaw Officer from immediately issuing a violation ticket under Part 2 of the Provincial Offences Procedures Act, R.S.A 2000, C. P-34 for a mandatory court appearance of any person who contravenes this Bylaw. (g) In Part 6 Contravention and Enforcement, Section 6.3 Offences and Penalties, by repealing sub-section 6.4.2(a)(ii), and re-numbering the sub-section accordingly; (h) In Part 6 Contravention and Enforcement, Section 6.3 Offences and Penalties, by amending sub-sections 6.4.3 to reference section referenced from section 6.4.2 (a) to section 6.4.2(a)(ii); (i) In Part 7 Supplementary Regulations, Section 7.32 Objects prohibited or Restricted in Yards, by repealing sub-section 7.32.2, and replacing as follows: 7.32.2 Recreational vehicles shall not be used as an accommodation of any kind within the Town limits, unless in an approved campground. (j) In Part 7 Supplementary Regulations, Section 7.32 Objects prohibited or Restricted in Yards, by repealing sub-section 7.32.3, and replacing as follows: 7.32.3 No person shall park: (1) A recreational vehicle or utility trailer on a parcel in a residential district, except for: (a) any recreational vehicle or utility trailer parked in the rear yard of a parcel;

(b) any recreational vehicle parked on an approved, hard surfaced front or side yard parking area between April 1 and October 31 inclusive; or (c) any utility trailer parked on an approved, hard surfaced front or side yard parking area; (2) A recreational vehicle or utility trailer in any manner that reduces the number of available off-street parking stalls below that required for the uses of the parcel in section 7.35.1 and in accordance with section 7.35.11.

(3) A recreational vehicle or utility trailer unless entirely contained within the property boundaries of the parcel, and not within 0.5 m of a sidewalk, curb, lane or roadway; or in any manner that protrudes, poses a traffic or safety hazard, or is otherwise not entirely within the property boundaries of the parcel.

(4) A passenger vehicle of any kind in the front or side yard of a residential district, except on a driveway or on an approved, hard surfaced parking area, as described in accordance with section 7.35.8. (k) In Part 10 Specified Penalties for Offences under the Land Use Bylaw, by adding the following: Section 7.32.3 (1) and (3) – Person park recreational vehicle or utility trailer in a residential district front yard outside the allowable dates or on an unapproved surface or not within the required setbacks from sidewalks, curbs, lanes or roads.

All persons in favour or opposed to the Bylaw will have the opportunity to be heard. If you are unable to attend personally, written submissions must be submitted to the Municipal Government Building no later than 12:00 noon on Thursday, May 21st, 2015.

If you submit comments on this bylaw, either orally or in writing, the information you provide may be recorded in the minutes of the Public Hearing, or otherwise made public, subject to the provisions of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. A copy of the proposed Bylaw and any related documents can be seen during regular office hours from 8:00 a.m. to 12 noon and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Municipal Government Building. The style of the hearing will be informal and persons wishing to speak will be requested to state their name and address for the record upon being recognized by the Chairperson.

École Fox Run Middle School hosted a huge badminton tournament the last week of April. The event started on April 28 with the Grade 6s, then on April 29 the Grade 7s played, and finally on April 30 the Grade 8s played.

There were over 180 athletes entered in the three events with players from all over Central Alberta.

The categories were girls singles and doubles and boys singles and doubles.

Then there we also mixed singles and doubles.

The top few teams from each category moved on to the CWAJHAA. The tournament was held over the weekend. School divisions

involved included Chinook’s Edge, Red Deer, Wolf Creek, Clearview and Wildrose.

The Grade 7 tournament was held at St. Francis in Red Deer and the Grade 8 tournament was held at Hunting Hills.

Fox Run won a banner (most athletes for age group). The school’s participating athletes included: Grade 7 Boys Singles Chris Ferguson; Grade 7 Girls Singles - Sierra Hilman; Grade 7 Boys Doubles - Warren Stewart, Matthew McDiarmid; Grade 8 Girls Singles - Kate Berg; Grade 8 Mixed Caleb Berg, Deni Brauer; Grade 8 Boys Doubles Luke Marshall, Cody Wold; Grade 8 Girls Doubles Teagan Asham, Reagan Frenette.

Nauticals swimmers fare well at Lethbridge Spring Challenge SUBMITTED SPECIAL TO SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Members of the Sylvan Lake Nauticals Swim Club made their way to Lethbridge May 2 and 3 to compete in the Lethbridge Spring Challenge. The Nauticals have started to compete in the long-course format 50-metre pool for the second time this year with some great results.

In all this weekend, the club broke a total of 11 club records and had six first places, 11 second places, and four third places finishes.

Isaac Bahler, 10, continued his strong swimming this weekend, finishing in the top three in all of his events, and

achieving his first ever ‘A’ time in the 50 free and improving on his club record for 10-year-olds and under.

Zoe DeJonge, 11, earned her 11-year-old ‘A’ time in the 50 free and broke the 11-year-old club record. She finished in the top three in three events.

Tyler Gauthier, 15, captured the 15-year-old club record in the 200 fly and swam strongly in all of his events.

Matthew Gauthier, 15, earned his 15-year-old National time and 17-year-old-and-over Western time in the 50 breast, and broke the club record in the process. He also earned club records in the 200 breast, 50 fly and 100 breast.

Elizabeth Moore, 14, finished in the top three in all of

her swims, and also broke club records in the 100 free, 100 back, 400 IM and the 50 free.

Other swimmers who had personal achievements included: Megan Abram, 13, who had best times in the 400 free, 50 fly, 100 free and the 50 free; Molly Cocks, 11, who had best times in the 200 IM and 50 free; and Sarah McClelland, 10, who had best times in the 200 IM and 50 free.

Other swimmers who participated this weekend and swam well included Abbigail Bahler, 8, Travis Lorenz, 9, Samatha Lorenz, 7, and Lexi Sparrow, 16.

Up next for the Nauticals is the Nose Creek Swim Association Corral City Classic in Calgary May 22 to 24.

A look at Lakeshore Drive motels throughout the years

The following article and accompanying pictures were submitted by the Sylvan Lake and District Archives Society as part of a series celebrating the society’s 20 years of existence this year. The Archives Society is open to the public every Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 4 p.m. at its new location in the lower level of the town’s Municipal Government Building.

The Bluebird Auto Court, with eight double cabins and six single cabins, was located on Lakeshore Drive across from the golf course. Carmen and Helen Alger owned the motel from 1949 to 1954, when they sold it to Alan and Edna Gill. The Algers lived in the house seen in the photo on this page — Carmen Alger is standing to the right of the property entrance.

The Embee Motel was built in 1960 by Manly and Pat Blakely. The land was purchased from L. Ditzler who owned the Varsity Court Motel, which was on the site of the now-closed Kentucky Fried Chicken

outlet. outlet The photo on this page is of the original 1960 Embee Motel building and shows the addition that was built during the winter of 196364. Pat Blakely and family operated the motel until 1975 and then sold it to Walter & Maureen Pritchard. This property is now known as Beach Front Resort.

In 1941, Clarence and Jessie Cyr began building three suites for what would become Sylvan Court, on land they owned on 46 Street. These suites offered cold water, coal stoves and outdoor plumbing! In 1942, two more suites were added — this time with hot water, washrooms and laundry

facilities at the building. h end d off the h b ld Then, in 1946, six more suites were built — each unit with its own bathroom.

Luxury!

The Cyrs sold Sylvan Court Suites in 1949 to a family who, soon after, decided they did not care for life in a resort town — so the Cyrs took it back and re-sold it to Otto and Ruth Tettolowski.

Earlier this month, a group of adult-nominated young Sylvan Lake residents were recognized for their volunteer efforts in the community at the Leaders of Tomorrow

Awards.

And last Wednesday, the tables were turned at the Youth Friendly Business Awards ceremony. Instead of adults recognizing the youth in the community, about 125 young Sylvan Lakers recognized local businesses for being ‘youth

friendly.’

The Youth Advisory Council took all the nominees into consideration, but had to narrow the final recipients down to four businesses.

Incline Industries Skate and BMX Park, Sylvan Lake Municipal Library, Canadian Tire and ATB Financial were nominees for the Building Blocks award, with ATB Financial receiving the accolade.

ATB Financial was recognized because the staff step beyond the bank machine and attend sports and youth events in the community. The staff work to promote positiveness by showing their support in the community.

The bank's branch manager Nancy Numan was thrilled to receive the recognition and held the plaque with pride. She said it felt “awesome” to have won the award.

“We have such a great community of youth and coordinators,” Numan said. “This town really believes in the youth, and it's awesome.”

The businesses in the running for the Community Philanthropy award included Canadian Tire, McDonald’s, Walmart, ATB Financial and Panago.

Canadian Tire was the final recipient, and was recognized for its Jumpstart program, which helps provide funding for children to play sports.

Canadian Tire store manager Elizabeth Lewis was ecstatic to receive the award.

She said about half of the staff employed at Canadian Tire are youth.

“It feels excellent to receive this award,” Lewis said. “We have a lot of youth that work

Some of the businesses that were nominated for the Most Youth Friendly Business award included Railside Bowling and Pizza Hut, Incline Industries Skate and BMX Park, Subway, Taco Time and Mac's. The owners of Railside Bowling and Pizza Hut won the final recognition.

Their owner Daud Ahmed received many compliments from youth who spend their time socializing with friends and bowling.

Ahmed received compliments on how his business caters to all ages, with activities such as throwing birthday parties for the youth. It was also noted how the atmosphere his business provides allows children to be themselves.

Ahmed was very proud to receive the award and said he feels good to be a winner.

As owner, Ahmed said his goal has always been to provide a safe and fun atmosphere for youth in the community.

“We truly believe that it takes a village to raise a child,” Ahmed said. “We wanted to create a place where anybody can come and have fun. It feels good to be recognized for that.”

The business nominees for the Youth Friendly Employer award included Nomads, No Frills, Canadian Tire, Dairy Queen, Sobeys and Boston Pizza.

Nomads won the recognition, but did not attend the ceremony. Nomads received recognition for providing youth with employment and training, resulting in the youth having the opportunity to mature and learn outside of school.

BYSTROM Dec. 1, 1960 - May 5, 2015 Barry George Bystrom of Sylvan Lake, Alberta, passed away in Red Deer at the age of 54. Barry was predeceased by his mother and father, Margaret and Axel Bystrom of the Centreville District. Barry is survived by his sister Jan (Phill) Oltman of Airdrie, his brother Gerald (Jill) Bystrom of Sylvan Lake, his friend Christine of Innisfail, his nephew James, and nieces Anika and Allison, 3 great nieces Adriana, Meredith and Parker and one great nephew, Remi. Barry grew up on the family farm in the Centreville District and received all his schooling in Sylvan Lake. Barry was a gentle soul who immensely enjoyed drawing, painting and photography. He had a great love of music and was a popular partner for “Name That Tune” because of his knowledge of bands. Barry was known for his kindness and patience with animals particularly dogs and cats. Barry had a strong faith and involvement in church activities (Frontline Fellowship) was important to him. A Memorial Service for Barry will be held at Frontline Worship Centre, 4904 50 Ave., Sylvan Lake, AB on Thursday May 14, 2015 at 2:00 PM. Cremation entrusted to the Rocky Mountain Crematorium, Rocky Mountain House.

Lions Club bike auction brings in funds for the community JASMINE O’HALLORAN–HAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Around 80 people gathered in the sunny weather to try their luck at the Sylvan Lake Lions Club’s annual bicycle auction

Saturday morning.

Around 61 bicycles were donated for the live auction held at the Lions Club Hall.

The total number of donations included 23 bicycles from the RCMP and 38 from community mem-

bers.

Within an hour, many of the bicycles had already been sold.

The average bicycle sold for about $30, with a total of close to $2,000 made from the auction.

Proceeds from the RCMP’s bicycles totalled $645.00. That money will go back to the RCMP to help fund their programs.

Around $1,350 was raised from the other donated bicycles, and

Sylvan Lake Lions Club President Peter Moir said that money will support a variety of community programs and local individuals in need.

Moir attended the event and said he enjoys it every

year as he sees new faces and notices people donating their old bicycles and buying new ones.

“It’s fun to see new families come in with their older bikes and get new bikes,” he said.

MARKET UPDATE Active Listings in Buyers Market

April sales numbers were respectable when compared to the five year average, but not on pace with 2014. The number of active listings is going up quicker than the number of sales creating another opportunity for buyers to take advantage of good selection, strong seller competition and very low interest rates. We expect more activity in the cottage and recreational market this summer as fewer people are willing to take their weakened Canadian dollars to a stronger US market.

The rest of the central Alberta market (except Blackfalds) is faring quite well with strong activity in the low to mid price ranges and stable active listing levels. So far we have experienced very little fallout from low energy prices, although it would be foolish to expect there won’t be some before the year is over. It does appear that most of the layoffs have already happened and many oil companies are in good enough financial shape to keep working even with lower prices.

Oil prices have recovered back to the mid to high $50 range but most experts aren’t predicting prices over $60 until next year.

While world demand for oil is increasing, storage supplies are still growing and there are thousands of already drilled wells in the US just waiting for prices to go up before fracking. There is concern that once prices go up, that supply will very quickly come on the market and drive prices down again.
