Local resident recounts deadly earthquake in Nepal Beverly Williams encourages citizens to donate after second quake hits

ne local woman is happy to be alive after surviving the deadly earthquake that hit Nepal and left thousands dead, injured and still missing.

Beverly Williams was on a three-week trek in Nepal to meet the people who supply her with fleece-lined mitts that she sells at the Red Deer Farmer’s Market.

More than 8,000 people are dead after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Nepal on April 25th. Just yesterday another 7.3 magnitude earthquake hit near the town of Namche Bazaar, killing and injuring even more people.

During her time there Williams decided to hike in Langtang National Park.

She went with her guide named Harin, a Nepali.

While on the hike Williams hurt her right leg badly, so she and Har had to turn around and head back to Kathmandu.

At about noon in Nepal on April 25th, the earthquake hit the area. Williams was on a bus heading back to Kathmandu at the time.

“I was in a stupor, I didn’t know what happened. My guide was grabbing me and everyone was running out of the bus. It was very dusty – you couldn’t even see it was so dusty,” she said. “My first thought wasn’t that it was an earthquake, it was that we had gone over the cliff.”

After getting off the bus, Williams said the group was sitting on the side of the road and groups of people on motorcycles began coming around and telling them what had happened.

“Everyone started walking back to Kathmandu. I am a slow walker so everyone passed and it was just my guide and I,” she said, adding they spent the first

At 4:30 a.m. the next morning, Williams and her guide continued their trek.

through it. “I know people died there and I know that could have been my bus.

“Har’s first concern was me the whole time. After the earthquake we got even closer. We were holding hands and walking, we were linked arm and arm.

We were both listening for landslides.”

Somewhere along the way, a truck picked the pair up and took them the rest of the way to Kathmandu – a day and a half after the earthquake hit.

When she returned to

Kathmandu Williams said there were countless people walking around and everyone was sleeping outside because it was dangerous because of the continuous aftershocks. Medical stations were also set up along the side of the street where there were people caring for the wounded.

“I went to a school and I did sleep there for two days.

While I was there I needed to contact my family, but no one could get through and all the hotels were closed. I did get a few people in the

Seeing the devastation firsthand is something that is engrained in Williams’ mind. “(Before the earthquake) I saw the beautiful landscape, people farming on hillsides. (After the earthquake) you saw more than 75 per cent of buildings down. Everyone was in shock,” she said. “I was walking along and there was a little 80- to 90-yearold woman and she was sit-

I knew she has nothing.”

Williams said the need in Nepal is great and she encourages Red Deerians to donate. Local Rotarians are raising money for shelterboxes, which include a family tent, blankets, water purification, cooking utensils, a stove, tool kit, a children’s activity pack and other items.

“It’s important for people to know where their donations are going.”

“After Har had learned that he had lost his home, I was his first and only concern,” she said. “I want to give back.”

Williams is at the Red Deer Farmer’s Market with her booth, Woolen Wonders, and will be collecting donations there in hopes of rebuilding Har’s home.

Brian Malley’s murder conviction appeal postponed

BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express Convicted murderer Brian Malley, who appealed his conviction last month, was to have his appeal spoken to yesterday, but the hearing was postponed to the fall.

Malley, 57, will have his appeal spoken to in the Alberta Court of Appeals on Sept. 15th. On Feb. 24th he was found guilty of firstdegree murder, causing an explosion of an explosive substance

likely to cause serious bodily harm, death or serious damage to property and sending or delivering to a person an explosive device in relation to the death of Victoria Shachtay in 2011.

Malley was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years – an automatic sentence for a first-degree murder conviction. He was also sentenced to serve four years concurrently with the life sentence for the explosive charges he was convicted of – two years for each charge.

The charges stem after an explosion occurred inside Shachtay’s Innisfail residence in November 2011. The incident occurred after a package disguised as a Christmas gift was delivered to the home which RCMP confirmed was the source of the explosion.

Malley was arrested in Red Deer on May 25th, 2012.

Shachtay, 23, was disabled and in a wheelchair from a car collision that happened in 2004. She was also a single mother to a then

seven-year-old girl.

Investigation showed Malley had known Shachtay for a number of years and acted as her financial adviser. Shachtay received a settlement of $575,000 after her accident. A $200,000 loan was also taken out on behalf of Shachtay. All of that money was gone within four years. Malley also supported her from his own personal account in the amount of $44,000.

During the course of the sixweek long trial, 50 witnesses tes-

tified and 100 exhibits were entered.

After the verdict was handed down Crown Prosecutor Anders Quist said this case was one of the most cold-blooded that he has ever encountered.

“The evidence shows him having worked on this bomb from July of 2011 to Nov. 25th of 2011.

Citizens play active role in crime prevention This week marks National Crime Prevention Week, and Red Deer RCMP would like to salute the ways Red Deerians make a difference in preventing and solving crime in their community.

“RCMP rely on citizens to be the eyes and ears of their neighbourhoods, and Red Deerians do a great job working with the police,” said RCMP Cpl. Leanne Molzahn. “Thanks to tips from the public, in the first part of 2015 RCMP have located numerous missing persons and identified sus-

pects in home invasions, serial thefts at local businesses, a hit and run involving a cyclist and a number of armed robberies.”

RCMP also rely on citizens to help them create a complete picture of criminal activity in the community by reporting crime.

Many people don’t report smaller property crimes, mistakenly believing that if the police don’t attend calls of that nature, it means they aren’t interested.

“While police may not physically attend every

call, all crime reports are logged and then analyzed for criminal patterns,” said Molzahn.

When citizens report criminal activity, it allows RCMP to develop a larger understanding of crime trends in the community.

Reports of suspicious or criminal activity also help police to target individuals who may be contributing to the problem. While information obtained from one citizen’s report may not be enough to identify a suspect, RCMP see it as one

piece of a larger puzzle: through analysis of a number of crimes, police are often able to identify the offenders responsible.

Finally, Red Deer RCMP encourage people to mark and record their valuables.

Every year, police confiscate hundreds of items as proceeds of crime, including large electronics, expensive power tools and a large number of bicycles.

All too often, police are unable to identify the owners and the items are sent to auction. Make it an afternoon project to record the

City receives a variety of input at budget open house

BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express More than 100 Red Deerians provided input at the City’s annual budget open house which took place earlier this week. City departments had booths where citizens could provide feedback and ask questions.

“There was strong representation from the finance department and citizens had the opportunity to go through an exercise and place priority on where they would prefer to see their tax investments made,” said Mayor Tara Veer.

“We also had a strong booth on the capital plan as council.

“We also covered off the full spectrum on our departments and staff were on hand to answer any questions that citizens may have had.”

In terms of concerns and positive feedback, Veer said she heard a mixture of things at the budget open house.

“The people who attended came because of an interest in capital projects and others came in there interested more in operations,” said Veer. “With respect to operations, probably what we heard was some commentary on what they thought was working well and what was improving, but also some discussion around key areas of priorities. What I heard was very consistent with previous engagement that we had with the public at Let’s Talk and the statistically significant survey around community safety and transportation pressures.

“Often at the open house we can get a sense of the economic climate our community is faced with. Different years will often have a different theme to it. This year there were people who came out wanting to see various projects go forward and were willing to fund those, but there was also a strong sentiment around concerns that generally City tax rates go up by a cost of living every year and people’s incomes don’t increase to match that.”

City staff have already started work on the 2016 capital and operating budgets. “Once we adopt the 2015 tax rate bylaw which we did in late April and early May, essentially that sends tax notices to our citizens for the 2015 year – literally staff begin building the budget for the 2016 year because it is such a thorough process,” said Veer. “Council adopted general budget guidelines at the end of April which is an important foundation for administration to have at least preliminary cues from council to start build-

ing the 2016 budget.

“From there the budget open house is another critical component of the budget process. It’s imperative that we engage with the public on the front end in order to ensure that the budget that is ultimately prepared and tabled is responsive to the needs of Red Deerians.”

The information gathered at the budget open house will be synthesized and will become part of the overall feedback for the budget. When the capital and operating budgets are tabled, council will see the feedback from the budget open house and other public forums.

“When making decisions, council will hopefully be making decisions that are responsive to the needs of the community.”

Veer added events like the budget open house are important for the City to have to allow for engagement with

Red Deerians.

“This City council has been strongly committed to community engagement – so much so that we have identified it as one of our themes in our strategic direction. The budget open house is one of many open houses that we have throughout the year, but it is absolutely imperative that we provide forums for our public to share their areas of interest and concern and ideas with council and City staff,” she said.

“We recognize that people’s time is at a premium so we have tried to be responsive to that in engaging with our citizens through social media, through online tools and offering a more traditional open house which allows people to drop in for 15 minutes or to come and stay for the duration of the evening.” efawcett@reddeerexpress.com

Registration open for annual Relay for Life

BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express The annual Relay for Life is set to take place in Red Deer next month.

The event will take place June 13th from noon to 12 a.m. at CrossRoads Church.

This year’s goal is to raise $130,000.

Money raised will go towards cancer research, treatment of cancer, to support the Wig

Bank, the driver program and for financial assistance to those battling cancer.

At the event teams will walk or run together around a track passing a baton to their fellow participants while working together to raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society.

There is food and entertainment and a Survivor’s Lap. Larry Parks, who has

participated in the Relay for Life for a number of years, said the cause is close to his heart.

In 2007, Parks was diagnosed suddenly with acute myeloid leukemia.

“I thought I had the flu.

I was sick for about three weeks and I was too stubborn to the to the doctor.

By the time I did get to the doctor, the morning I was told I had leukemia, they

didn’t expect me to live beyond the end of the day,” he said. “I was rushed to Red Deer Regional Hospital and my white (cell) counts were 387,000 and a normal white count would be in the range of four to 10. They couldn’t figure out why I was still alive.”

Parks was transferred to Edmonton the following morning and later that day he had his first chemotherapy treatment.

“There was no time for

me to worry about what was going on. It was simply have chemo treatments, or not survive,” he said. “I was feeling pretty good that day and I asked the doctor to do more tests and I will never forget the words of my specialist when he said if we don’t start treatment today, I will not survive beyond a couple of days. That is how serious it was.”

Parks finished three rounds of chemotherapy.

was told he would need a stem cell transplant to save his life. In June 2007 he received that transplant.

“That was my first taste of being involved with the relay. My office staff in Red Deer entered a team into the Relay for Life called ‘Larry’s Gang’. They sent me six pictures which I hung on the walls on my hospital room and I said I was going to be there next year,” he said. “It was great motivation for me to be there and I was there in 2008. We have been involved in it ever since.”

Parks said his continued involvement with the relay is one of the ways he gives back.

“It’s the least I can do for the organization and the medical science that saved my life. Since 2007 we have raised a little over $100,000 and we are going higher,” he said. “I’m very proud of what we have done.”

Today, Parks is cancerfree and he mentors others battling the disease.

“Over the past six years I have been involved in that, I have mentored about 11 different people who are going through their cancer journey. Unfortunately, they don’t all survive,” he said. “Every time we lose someone I realize how lucky I am to be alive.”

Parks also works with Canadian Blood Services and encourages others to give blood and to the stem cell donor program.

“Last fall I had the opportunity to meet the young woman in Longview, Texas who actually saved my life.

That was a great experience.”

OPINION The sky didn’t fall One week ago today, Albertans were coming to terms with something that former premier Jim Prentice said we would never be – ‘An NDP province’.

Social media blew up with comments about how Alberta had just committed suicide, corporations would flee in terror, the oil and gas industry would sink into oblivion.

But alas, the sky has not fallen. At least not quite yet – and honestly, we don’t expect it to.

Premier-elect Rachel Notley is a smart, sensible and experienced woman in the world of politics. And while many of the newly-elected MLAs may sorely lack any experience, she certainly has the brains and the drive to lead the province. Albeit in perhaps in a new way and in a new direction.

It was frustrating to see so many dire warnings flooding the province right after the election.

Notley won’t prove to be the demise of the province – more than likely it will be the terrible attitudes of some Albertans that have surfaced in the days since the election.

Change is hard – no question. Particularly after having the same government at the helm for 44 years.

Albertans are used to a way of life and especially a way of being governed. But

clearly, they were tired of the Tories and demanded change – even if it meant a sweeping change to the other side of the political spectrum.

In the weeks ahead, it will also be interesting to see Notley release further details about her government’s policies – that is where we will get a true sense of where the province will be headed in the next four years.

In the meantime, we don’t need blowhards like businessman Kevin O’Leary ranting about how this is the worst thing that could ever really happen. Common sense commentary is one thing, but comments designed to spark fear in the hearts and minds of Albertans is a disservice to all.

Ultimately, Notley really hasn’t said anything that should send fear into the minds of the corporate or oil and gas sector. She maintains that she wants to work with both industries – we don’t believe she’s an enemy of business. Who in their right mind would be? Particularly during a time when the province’s economy is struggling.

The bottom line is she has four years to prove herself. If by that time Albertans are in any way dissatisfied, we can certainly demand change once again. It’s time for folks to try and relax, be a bit more open-minded and see where the road ahead leads.

Some economic advice for Premier-designate Rachel Notley If I were sitting with Premier-designate Rachel Notley advising her on the economy and the next budget, I would first recommend that she base her decisions on evidenced-based governance.

Notley would have to first start with a comprehensive audit of the longterm sustainability of the province’s natural assets (oil, gas, minerals, timber, agricultural land). The audit would examine the re-

Alberta’s oil sands reserves contain roughly 168 billion barrels that would be valued at $8.2 trillion based on a conservative US$50 per barrel of oil. At 2013 rates of oil production (2.1 million barrels per day) Alberta’s oil sands should last 215 years.

Second, Notley needs to take a lesson from former Premier Peter Lougheed, who was able to negotiate a higher economic return on oil and gas sales from Alberta’s energy industry.

The oil sector currently pays less than a dime on the dollar in royalty payments, whereas during the Lougheed era it paid an average 27 cents and as high as 37.7 cents in 1977.

than during the Lougheed era, our schools and healthcare system could be properly funded without a sales tax, an increase in healthcare premiums or even an increase in corporate taxes.

Third, Notley needs to conduct an assessment of the renewable energy capacity available for development, including solar, wind, geothermal, biofuels, and other renewable energy options. Alberta has an abundance of sunshine, yet we have the lowest installed solar PV capacity in Canada. Why not consider creating the conditions for a flourishing renewable sector that is as healthy as our petroleum sector?

Fourth, Notley needs to implement a new accounting system for the province.

A proper balance sheet for Alberta would include a full cost accounting of the environmental liabilities

that Alberta imposes on the planet. This would include a proper accounting of the social costs of Alberta’s greenhouse gas emissions that contribute over 35% of Canada’s total emissions, much of it attributed to Alberta’s oil and gas production. Preliminary estimates suggest Alberta’s carbon liability at over $500 million per year.

Included in the new accounting system would be a full cost accounting of unfunded ecological liabilities, including the real costs of cleaning up the tailings ponds in the Fort McMurray oil sands development area. These liabilities do not currently appear either on Alberta’s balance sheet or on the balance sheet of oil sands producers.

Albertans. In short, the government would call for a human well-being and happiness audit.

The assessment would seek to know what Albertans love about Alberta, why they came here, and why they choose to stay. It would want to know whether Albertans actually enjoy their work and whether it brings meaning to their lives.

Included in the assessment would be a well-being benefit analysis of the impacts of raising the wages of the roughly 30% of working Albertans earning less than a $15/hour, the living wage level. By paying a living wage, the province would save an estimated $7 to $9 billion in the societal costs of poverty, increase its revenue and increase the sense of well-being of so many workers that struggle with low income.

By addressing these recommendations, Premierdesignate Notley would be leading the province to a genuine Alberta Advantage while becoming a pioneer in the development of a practical operating model for the new economy of well-being.

But if left unaddressed, these recommendations could dog the party as it sets its stamp on the province.

Red Deer’s citizens of the year honoured

BY JENNA SWAN Red Deer Express Every year Red Deerians are asked by the Rotary Clubs of Red Deer to nominate outstanding individuals making a difference in the City through their volunteerism or philanthropic work.

Each year two locals are honoured by the clubs at the annual Citizen of the Year Gala, which was held last week at the Sheraton Hotel and Conference Centre.

This year’s Citizen of the Year went to Sheila Bannerman for her 33 years of service to her City, which included spearheading the City’s centennials celebrations, extensive work with the Central Alberta Historic Society as acting president, as well as sitting on the board of the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery. Her current work has been with assisting in the ‘Walking With Our Sisters’ traveling exhibit, which sheds insight on missing and murdered aboriginal women of Canada and which is currently on display at the Museum.

Bannerman, who holds a masters degree in history, has spent nearly half her life in volunteerism for her community but

it isn’t the awards that keep her doing it.

“It’s about continuing to serve your community,” said Bannerman. “I believe very strongly in serving the community of Red Deer because I love it here and I love the people here - so it’s what I’m going to continue to do.”

The 2015 Young Citizen of the Year title was awarded to Stephanie AuBuchon for the work she began during her time as a student at Hunting Hills High School, where she co-chaired the school’s inaugural bike-a-thon.

The event just finished its third consecutive year in which thousands of dollars are raised annually and put towards supporting those with mental illness. The money raised has since funded programs for students such as the ‘Breaking Down The Walls’ – a workshop designed to unify, empower and engage students to create a positive and supportive school atmosphere.

AuBuchon was also commended for the years of volunteerism at the Red Deer Hospital where she has been volunteering since the age of 12.

It was during her time here that she discovered a passion for helping others. She

recently finished her second year at Red Deer College where she is enrolled in the Bachelor of Science program and hopes to pursue a career in nursing.

“In volunteering at the hospital, I saw the role nurses play and that’s something I’m very interested in pursuing,” said AuBuchon. “For me it’s about patient care and being with people – that’s what I like.”

AuBuchon attended Joseph Welsh Elementary School and Eastview Middle School before heading off to Hunting Hills High School and onto college. She hopes to one day continue to live in Red Deer and continue her career with the Red Deer Hospital, and perhaps begin volunteering

with the local hospice.

The award recipients are chosen by a board of Rotary members, with nomination criteria for the Citizen of the Year Award stating the decision is based on length of service to the community, a legacy created, the impact created in the community as well as community enhancement.

POLICE BRIEFS RCMP RESPOND TO MOTORCYCLE FATALITY Red Deer RCMP responded to a single vehicle motorcycle fatality at approximately 7 p.m. on May 9th on northbound Taylor Drive near the intersection with Kerry Wood Drive. Witnesses reported that the driver of the motorcycle was driving faster than the speed limit when he lost control and flipped the motorcycle before striking a lamp post.

Red Deer EMS and firefighters attended and treated the 55-year-old Red Deer man on scene, but he was declared deceased shortly thereafter.

An RCMP collision analyst attended the scene; RCMP do not believe alcohol was a factor but believe speed may have been a factor.

Next of kin notification has been completed, and RCMP will not be releasing the name of the deceased man.

ATTEMPTED SEXUAL ASSAULT On May 2nd at 5:41 a.m., Sylvan Lake RCMP were dispatched to a complaint of a sexual assault. The victim had been walking to work in the area of 48th Ave. and 48th St. in Sylvan Lake, when she was grabbed from behind by the suspect and carried into the back alley between 47th St. and 48th St. The victim was then thrown to the ground and eventually released when she yelled that she was going to call police. The suspect then fled southbound down the back alley.

The suspect is described as being male with a thin to medium build, approximately 6’ tall and had facial hair on his chin. He wore faded blue jeans, a black sweater or jacket with a hood pulled over his head and smelled of alcohol.

Sylvan Lake RCMP are requesting the public’s assistance in locating the person responsible for this crime. Police request that the public review video footage, whether residential or business, from May 2nd between the hours of 4:30 a.m. and 6 a.m. and provide police with any video of any person matching the clothing description. Anyone that has heard or seen anything in the area on that morning, or have any information about this crime, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800222-8477 to report anonymously, or contact the Sylvan Lake RCMP directly at 403-858-7200.

RCMP LOOK TO ID BOBCAT THIEF Red Deer RCMP are looking for public assistance to identify a man who was caught in the act of stealing a bobcat and trailer.

RCMP received a call at 11:30 a.m. on May 2nd when the owners of a business located in the Queens Industrial Park happened to be driving by their property just as a man attempted to drive away from it pulling a trailer and bobcat the owners recognized as being their property.

which he had taken it. The suspect attempted to talk his way out of the situation by providing false contact information, but the victims were not convinced.

They took photographs of the suspect and his vehicle and called the RCMP. The suspect returned the trailer holding the bobcat to the compound but fled the scene before police arrived.

The suspect is described as Caucasian, in his 30s and spoke with a Newfoundland accent. He was scruffy-looking with a beard and was wearing a baseball cap and sunglasses.

The suspect vehicle is a newer grey Ford truck with a missing front bumper and a broken passenger window that had red tape on it. The truck had an orange dirt bike mounted in the box.

Looking back on the 1935 provincial election Eighty years ago, on Aug. 22nd, 1935, Alberta was hit with one of the greatest political upheavals in its history.

DAWE The fledgling Social Credit movement swept to power in the provincial election, winning 56 of the 63 seats in the Legislature and carrying 54% of the popular vote.

The long-standing incumbent United Farmers of Alberta (U.F.A.) government was completely wiped out and failed to win a single seat.

Only a small band of five Liberals and two Conservatives were elected to provide an opposition to the new government.

Social Credit was born out of the destitution and despair of the Great Depression.

The movement was led by William Aberhart, a charismatic Calgary school teacher and popular host of a weekly religious radio program, the Back to The Bible Hour.

During the summer of 1932, Aberhart became a convert to the Social Credit philosophy, which had been developed by a British engineer, Major C.H. Douglas.

To Aberhart, Social Credit provided an answer to the economic hardships of the Great Depression in what should have been the prosperous province of Alberta.

Aberhart did not stick to Douglas’s complex theories. He boiled down the econom-

until 1971 when it was finally replaced by the Progressive Conservative Party led by the dynamic Peter Lougheed.

of the chief proponents of Social Credit to the committee of MLAs. Major Douglas was brought out from England to also provide expert advice, but it soon became obvious that he differed fundamentally with Aberhart on many key points.

The special legislative committee produced a negative report on Social Credit and the U.F.A. government rejected any thought of implementing it.

Hence, in January 1935, Aberhart decided to adopt direct political action to implement the plan he passionately felt would end the Depression.

Social Credit constituency organizations were quickly organized and candidates nominated.

The largely discredited U.F.A. government felt powerless to stem the burgeoning political movement and plunged into panic.

Aberhart overcame many of the public’s doubts about his economic and political movement by promising that a Social Credit government would quickly implement a $25 per month ‘dividend’ to each Albertan.

Hence, Social Credit swept to power in an incredible landslide.

Voters ignored the warnings of every major newspaper in Alberta and much of the business elite about the radicalism of what Aberhart proposed.

While Aberhart had a lot of difficulty implementing his platform after the election, Social Credit had an enduring appeal to Albertans.

Hence, Social Credit remained in power

He held that the Depression was due to inherent flaws of the financial system and the domination of a small group of bankers and financiers.

To Aberhart, the solution was to give control of the financial system, “Back to the people” and away from what he referred to as ‘The Fifty Bigshots.’

Aberhart proposed the printing and distribution of social dividends which would close the gap between poverty and prosperity.

In other words, government-issued credit would become the means of controlling the economy and creating money and jobs once more.

Aberhart used his weekly radio broadcasts to spread the idea of Social Credit across the province.

He also tied the moral and religious ‘good’ of Social Credit as a weapon against the greed and corruption of the financiers who he blamed for the Great Depression.

Study groups were established, first at Aberhart’s Prophetic Bible Institute and then in communities across Alberta.

The idea was to help educate people in the tenets of Social Credit and increase the economic theory’s popularity.

Aberhart also pressured the U.F.A. government to study Social Credit as well.

Consequently, a special legislative committee was struck to examine to new proposals and to hear witnesses on their feasibility.

Art of Friendship is an eight-week course designed to help people who feel lonely or isolated learn and practice the skills that help people make and keep friends.

The course meets weekly from 6 to 8 p.m. and runs through June 4th. It will take place at the Dawe Branch of the Red Deer Public Library at 56 Holt St. The RDPL is a co-sponsor of the this course. Art of Friendship is particularly helpful to people who have lost friends because difficult experiences or disability have affected their confidence level and self-esteem. Empty nesters, older people entering retirement, and people new to Red Deer also report that this course has improved their social lives. Riverlands is moving forward Riverlands looks empty right now, but plans are underway to turn the former civic yards site into a bustling downtown that marries living spaces, shopping, restaurants and gathering places.

“Red Deerians have been waiting many years for work to begin in Riverlands,” said Mayor Tara Veer.

“This development will change the whole look and feel of the greater downtown and provide residents with a new urban neighbourhood uniquely situated along our river and trail system.”

Demolition of the former civic yards buildings was the first step in moving forward with the vision for Riverlands. Work has also included cleaning up the site, completing environmental testing and preparing the land for development.

As part of the demolition contract, the contractor was required to recycle as much material as possible. As a result, over 17,000 metric tonnes of concrete and metal, 90% of the building materials, was

recycled instead of going to the landfill.

The vision for Riverlands considers the need to balance environmental sustainability with cultural, social and economic needs while providing a neighbourhood right in the urban core. The City owns approximately 23 acres of developable land that will be made available for sale through an open tender process. In the meantime, planning is underway on many of the features of the Riverlands District, including a riverwalk and other civic gathering areas.

Other work already underway to support the redevelopment of Riverlands also includes the Taylor Drive Improvements project, which will see a new intersection at Taylor Drive and Alexander Way and will increase connections for drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and trail users, and the burial of the transmission line which is scheduled to begin after the May long weekend.

A standby charge is applicable when employees gain a benefit from using the employer’s automobile for their personal use. Personal driving includes vacation trips, driving for personal use, and travel between home and work. If an employee does not use the automobile for personal driving, there will be no taxable benefit.

Live feed technologies are changing natural research

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Red Deer Express In terms of wildlife research and data collection, the use of webcams and live feed technologies is relatively new but it has already created a massive impact in this field.

Central Alberta is home to several of these live webcam feeds. Currently, there are two cameras focused on nesting owls, one at Kerry Wood Nature Centre and the other at Ellis Bird Farm. Both of these feeds have been designed exclusively in Central Alberta and have become game changers in the way people interact with the species.

“The reason the live feeds are so popular is because they provide a unique perspective that people can have into the lives of these birds (and other animals). Prior to this technology, observations would generally be made using binoculars or telescopes by researchers,” explained Myrna Pearman, a biologist at Ellis Bird Farm.

“Most people have an innate interest in nature, but they don’t have the opportunity to spend a lot of time in nature. This technology has brought remarkable views into people’s own homes through computers. Researchers have come onboard realizing that valuable data can be collected through these cameras and so there has been a two-pronged approach right from the beginning with entertainment and research.”

Many countries around the world utilize this kind of equipment to offer a glimpse into the lives of wildlife. There are many web sites where people can go to access these images – one of the most popular being www.ustream.tv, where people can find a huge variety of animal webcams,

both domestic and in the wild.

“What ‘ustream’ does is provide webcam streams and a chat room so people from all around the world can talk about the feeds. There are moderators who keep the chatroom appropriate and who can provide information about the animals on the stream. There are people that log in all around the world,” Pearman said.

“I think webcams are really increasing the level of nature appreciation because people are able to get so close. Not everybody gets involved, but there are a core group that make that extra effort to get that data and send it in,” she added.

This group of people making the extra effort are everyday, non-paid citizens who enjoy watching the feeds for long periods of time and who relay certain information about the animals to researchers. This teamwork cuts down the amount of time researchers have to be specifically watching the cameras, but widens the breadth of the research.

“Two things are amazing about that you have the webcam technology that enables this data to be collected, and then you have a team of dedicated owl watchers that can pass information to the researchers like ‘citizen scientists’.

The researchers can’t always be watching, so they communicate with those who do watch and who are recording the exact times and weather during activities,” Pearman said.

“It gives the general population a way to contribute to current scientific understanding of these species.”

MADD Youth In Canada: Let’s keep each other alive!

MADD Canada’s Youth Program reaches more than 1,000,000 students in Grades 7 to 12 through the powerful School Assembly Program presentations.

In addition, staff say they have recruited a growing number of volunteers who are focused on raising awareness on college and university campuses from coast to coast.

According to the MADD web site, road crashes continue to be leading cause of death among teenagers. The statistics for motor vehicle crashes and impairment-related crashes among young drivers are alarming.

Young people have the highest rates of traffic death and injury per capita among all age groups and the highest death rate per kilometer driven among all drivers under 75 years of age.

More 19-year-olds die or are seriously injured than any other age group. Motor vehicle crashes are also the leading cause of death among 16- to 25-year-olds, and alcohol and/or drugs are a factor in 55% of those crashes.

Studies conclude young drivers are over-represented in road crashes for two primary reasons: inexperience and immaturity. Although young people are the least likely to drive impaired, the ones who do are at very high risk of collision.

Alcohol affects judgment, hand-eye coordination, ability to focus, ability to see and think clearly and ability to recognize potentially dangerous or hazardous road conditions or situations.

Young and novice drivers usually lack both driving and drinking experience.

They tend to be risk takers and are less cautious than their older counterparts. So, even in the absence of alcohol, young drivers are at a greater relative risk of crashing than older, more experienced drivers. When you add alcohol to the equation, the risks become significantly higher.

Of all the young drinking drivers who are killed or seriously injured, the smallest proportion is 16 years of age.

The largest proportion is 19 years of age.

Males account for 87% of the young fatally injured drinking drivers and 89% of the seriously injured drinking drivers.

Population surveys are also showing the number of Canadians driving after using drugs is on the rise. In fact, driving after smoking cannabis is now more prevalent among some younger drivers than driving after drinking.

Survey data from a 2013 Centre for Addiction and Mental Health report showed that, among young Ontario drivers in Grades 10 – 12, 4% drove after drinking while 9.7% drove after smoking cannabis.

Equally concerning as the numbers is the misperception that many young people, and some parents, have that driving under the influence of cannabis is safer than driving under the influence of alcohol.

Many young people think driving under the influence of cannabis is risk-free. Yet studies have shown smoking cannabis can produce unwelcome effects behind the wheel, including a shorter attention span, an altered perception of time and distances and slower reaction times that impair the driver’s ability to respond to sudden events in traffic.

Combining cannabis with even small amounts of alcohol also greatly increases the negative impact on driving skills.

Meanwhile, the ongoing campaign - MY Decisions – MY Voice – MY Right to a Safe Ride Home – emphasizes a range of themes from ‘MADD Youth make smart choices by not mixing alcohol, drugs and driving’, ‘MADD Youth help and educate their friends to stop mixing alcohol, drugs and

driving’ and ‘MADD Youth plan ahead and take turns being a designated driver’ to ‘MADD Youth refuse to get into a vehicle driven by an impaired driver’.

MADD Canada is committed to working with today’s youth to help make roads safer.

They want to engage and work with all those across Canada – particularly elementary, high school and university students, as well as their families, teachers and mentors – who want to do their part to put a stop to alcohol and drug-related crashes.

The organization uses the Internet, radio and TV ads, posters, national contests and bursaries to reach out to every age group.

To assist parents and teachers, MADD Canada has developed education programs, victim/survivor support services and other resources, such as links and statistics for youth of all ages.

Stakeholders have also developed a ‘Contract for Life’ as a reality check between friends and family members. Help friends and family stay alive by encouraging them to sign the Contract for Life and don’t let them drink and drive.

Also, last year, a community and health services coalition developed a new interactive game called Why Drive High?

This game shows how smoking up and driving messes with your hand/eye coordination.

ENTERTAINMENT Charley Pride includes Red Deer on his Canadian tour

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express Fans of classic country will be thrilled that one of the ‘legends’ is making a City stop May 23rd. Celebrating over 50 years in country music, Charley Pride plays the Centrium with showtime at 2 p.m.

The Country Music Hall of Famer and Grammy winner has a catalogue of chart-topping songs including Kiss An Angel Good Morning, Mountain of Love, Crystal Chandelier and Kaw-Liga to mention a few of his more than 36 number one hits.

This past month, Pride was honoured with the release of Neal McCoy’s Pride: A Tribute to Charley Pride: Deluxe Edition.

The project is a 13-cut CD that pays tribute to McCoy’s mentor. In the early 80s, Pride gave McCoy the opportunity to open his shows, earning the young singer his own record deal and subsequently a series of hit singles.

As Pride told McCoy all those years ago, “If you put on a great show and be nice to people, you’ll last a long time in this business.

“I like the good job he did on them,” explains Pride of McCoy’s CD. “He’s a very fine young man; he’s very talented,” he adds, pointing out that McCoy actually opened for Pride for some six years of touring.

These days, Pride is excited about hitting the road again, and delights in putting together a show that reflects his storied career. His latest CD, Choices, was released in 2011.

It marked his first new studio album since 2006’s Pride & Joy: A Gospel Music Collection. He’s currently lining up tunes for his next project, which will include collaboration with Randy Jackson of American Idol fame. “He wants to do an album, and I’d like to as well – we’d also like it to coincide it with the movie that we are trying to get done.”

was initially announced back in the mid-2000s, and was set to be a done deal by 2008 with the title role going to Terrence Howard.

But Howard eventually moved onto other things, and then there were talks with Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson to play Pride. “I met Howard and everything was set to go, but there was a writers’ strike in Hollywood,” he recalls.

The project has essentially been stuck in production limbo since.

Pride would love to see it move forward, noting other similar films about singers tend to find audiences and garner plenty of critical acclaim - Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny Cash and Jamie Foxx as Ray Charles received all kinds of accolades in Walk the Line and Ray respectively, as did Sissy Spacek as Loretta Lynn in Coalminer’s Daughter.

“Lots of them have gotten Academy Awards out of it,” he laughs. But aside from the stalled project, Pride remains brightly optimistic, as he seems to about much of life.

“We’re trying to recoup everything and get things going again – and do whatever it takes to get the movie done.”

But at the end of the day, it’s mainly about the music.

And Pride, 77, couldn’t be happier about how things are going in that department – he’s about to head over to Britain for a string of shows before coming to Canada. “My fans say my voice sounds better than it ever did,” he says with unmistakable gratitude. He recalls hearing Billy Daniels sing That Old Black Magic when he was 65. “I remember thinking, wow that voice is just booming.

I thought if when I’m 65 and my voice is like that, I’ll be a blessed man.

“Here I am, some years later, and people are saying my voice is better than it used to be,” he chuckles, adding that he quit smoking and drinking years ago which has likely helped.

He remembers being in Ha-

waii having a smoke and it felt like something was sawing on his throat. “I thought, why am I doing this – this is the way I make my living.”

Pride’s longevity as an artist speaks to his ability to connect to his audiences. His shows have a laid-back, relaxed feel. And he’s never wavered from what he does best – classic, traditional country.

Born to poor sharecroppers, one of 11 kids in Sledge, Mississippi, Pride has been described as ‘a timeless everyman.’ He’s had a continual presence in music for decades, and to date, he’s sold some 70 million records. Pride also released his autobiography, Pride: The Charley Pride Story in 1994.

Interestingly, music wasn’t what he initially had his sights set on for a career. Baseball was an early passion, but his natural gift as a singer would surface from time to time during those years as well.

He unofficially launched his music career in the late 1950s as a ballplayer singing and playing guitar on the team bus between ballparks. After a tryout with the New York Mets, Pride decided to return to his Montana home via Nashville. It proved a key moment in his life’s direction, as it was there he met Jack Johnson.

Upon hearing the singer perform, Johnson promised a management contract.

A year later, Pride returned to Nashville and was introduced to producer Jack Clement.

When Clement heard Pride’s renditions of a handful of songs, he asked Pride to cut two songs in two hours. Pride agreed and The Snakes Crawl at Night and Atlantic Coastal Line were recorded.

Three months later, Pride’s demo landed in the hands of RCA Records head Chet Atkins who signed him to the label. Pride’s first single hit the airwaves in early 1966. Before long, The Snakes Crawl at Night was climbing the charts with Before I Met

Meanwhile, dozens of his chart toppers now stand as modern classics. Kiss An Angel Good Morning went on to be a million-selling crossover single and helped Pride land Country Music Association Awards as Entertainer of the Year in 1971 and Top Male Vocalist in 1971 and 1972.

Besides being a five-week country No. 1 in late 1971 and early 1972, the song was also his only pop Top 40 hit, hitting No. 21, and reaching the Top Ten of the Adult Contemporary charts as well, according to Wikipedia.

He laughs, recalling various folks asking him if he was ever going to ‘cross over’ to the pop side. Pride is proud to be primarily a traditional country singer,

and points out that the concept of crossing over wasn’t on his radar with his success on the pop charts as it was, referring to Kiss an Angel Good Morning.

Through it all, Pride has kept a level head about his success. And there’s always that sense of gratitude that shines through at every turn. When discussing his life, he reflects on times when things haven’t gone his way. But his perspective has remained decidedly positive.

“I could go on about things – there were times I could have cried and moaned. But I said well, it’s not going to put me in the soup line.”

Scott Woods Band stirs up rich musical memories

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express There is something rich, timeless and engaging about old-time fiddle music. Fans of the style won’t want to miss the exemplary skills of Canadian award-winning fiddler Scott Woods.

He and his band are bringing ‘Fiddling in the Key of…eh?’ to Sunnybrook United Church on May 21st at 7 p.m. Proceeds from the show will help support programs at the church as well as Camp Kasota near Sylvan Lake, too.

“I’ve been across Canada more than 35 times,” he explains during a recent break from touring. “During that time, we’ve realized what we thought was Canadian fiddling varied distinctly as we went to different parts of the country.

“Like with language where there is a dialect, and you can tell where someone’s ancestry is based on the way they say certain words, fiddling kind of has its own dialect as well. If you were of Scottish origin you might play a tune a certain way, or if you Irish you might play it a different way. So we discovered that these different playing styles existed and for the most part they have remained.

“The fiddling is passed down through generations by ear, so the influences on the fiddling remained,” he explained. “It has remained close to the roots of where the settlers came from. So we are exploring those differences between Scottish, Irish, French, Metis, Ukrainian and Acadian, Cajun and some of the American influences on Canadian fiddling as well,” he said. “It’s very much a Canadiana show, and a really fun show.

“There is a lot of variety – there’s some fast tunes, some slow tunes,” he said. “And while I play particular tunes, we also play some images on a screen of different places in Canada that kind of go from east to west. It’s kind of a sentimental, nostalgic look at Canada near the end of the show – it’s certainly a lot of fun.”

Woods is stunning in his role as entertainer, and he’s landed many accolades along the way to prove it. He was part of a Don Messer tribute show for several years some time ago before heading out and developing his own productions.

He had an early start delving into music beginning his studies in classical violin at age four. The training has been critical to his development as an artist, but he always had a penchant for the old-time styles that

were so familiar to him growing up.

During his high school years, he’d practice six or seven hours a day. Then his postsecondary studies took him in a different direction – business and marketing. He’s grateful for those skills as they’re such a help with his career, but music is and has always been at the forefront.

Woods is a winner of the Canadian Open Fiddle Contest, a winner of the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Championships, and Canadian Fiddle Entertainer of the Year. For Woods, playing for the folks in every community and meeting them after the show are definite highlights. Many treat him and the band like family, bringing gifts and even providing food for a post-show treat. “I love the music for sure – it’s an expression. I’m quite shy when I’m not on the stage,” he explained. “It’s certainly an outlet for some of that artistic expression. And because I’ve been across the country so many times, the novelty of traveling has diminished somewhat – but at the same time, I feel very comfortable no matter where I am.

“I could be 2,000 miles from home and still know my way around, know where the Tim Hortons are, and know where to get the fuel. In fact, there are people that typically come to the Red Deer show that bring us homemade pies and put them in coolers so they are still warm when they arrive!

“So in a lot of the places we play, there are people that are like family. It’s very comforting – it’s like playing for your friends and family.”

Performing also brings a sense of fulfillment and joy to his life, and that is partly fueled by the enduring quality of the music as well. “For many, it’s about looking back to a simpler time in life before all the cell phones and gadgets – all the things that are supposed to connect us,” he added with a laugh.

“To the younger people, they come and they’re eyes are opened because they see that this music is fun and it doesn’t have to be twangy and scratchy – hillbilly kind of music. It’s happy, fun music – it’s music for the people.

“I think that’s why it’s so timeless.”

Canadian hip-hop artist SonReal excited to be back in City

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Red Deer Express Canadian hip-hop artist Aaron Hoffman – better known by his stage name of SonReal – says he is looking forward to being back in Red Deer as he promotes his latest EP. Hoffman is on tour to promote For The Town, a sixsong EP released last month. He said that the touring experience has been great and he looks forward to his show at International Beer Haus on May 20th.

Hoffman stopped in Red Deer as he was promoting his album One Long Day. He said things have definitely changed since that tour, especially in regards to crowd response and a more solid fan base.

“Things have actually changed a lot. When I came out with One Long Day, that was kind of the first project that really started the buzz and got people talking about my music. It got people excited about what we’re doing,” he said. “People are getting into the music, and things are starting to snowball for us. It’s partially because of the videos and all that

“I’m just kind of always pushing myself as an artist to try things maybe I’m not comfortable doing or trying to push myself conceptually. I’m trying to talk about things a little bit more in depth with the songs I’m writing, and I think that happened on For The Town,” Hoffman said.

“I’m at a point in my career where I really think that we’ve finally got people listening and watching – things are starting to move for us. I think it’s a really important time in my career to be letting people know who I am, and not shying away from anything I want to say, and to make great music overall.”

Hoffman said he hopes people recognize his drive in his music

and his willingness to make a mark in the industry.

“What I want people to take away from my music is my story.

My story is that I come from a small town, and there’s not really a lot of rappers or anybody that’s come out of the town I’m from (Vernon, B.C). My whole story is kind of fighting against the odds of what it is to do something that a lot of people don’t think you can do,” Hoffman said.

“I think that if people take anything away from For the Town, it’s that we aren’t here for a long time and everybody has dreams and aspirations – For The Town depicts going out and getting those dreams, no matter what.

Gospel Music Celebration at Centrium This summer, Gospel music fans will be streaming to the Centrium to hear some of the finest artists in the genre today. The Gospel Music Celebration runs July 9th11th. Events will be held at the Centrium, kicking off Thursday. The box office opens at 4 p.m. as does the exhibit hall, with concerts kicking off at 6 p.m.

Featured performers this year include the Booth Brothers, the Collingsworth Family, the Mark Trammell Quartet, Legacy V, Young St. Vocal Band, Sweet Saturday, the Triumphant Quartet, the Penny Loafers, Double Portion, Greater Vision, Three and Company and the Ball Brothers.

Watch out for downright dangerous dieting tricks Being in the fitness industry for years, I have heard my fair share of weird and dangerous dieting tricks. Some of them shocking, some of them eyebrow raising and some of them just plain disturbing.

Some people’s desire to lose a lot of weight in a short amount of time is so great they’re willing to try anything - sometimes to the point of putting their health and even their lives at risk. The end result is all they care about and they don’t give much thought to possible consequences. Yes, while extreme dieting methods usually work (for a short, short time and then back fire big time), they just simply aren’t safe or recommended.

Anyone reading this article should take it as a warning - don’t believe the lie that thin people are more valuable and therefore subject your body to dangerous diets.

Health should be your focus, not getting skinny to impress others.

Whatever you try in your weight loss efforts, be sure to avoid these methods.

The human body is made up of trillions of cells. Each cell requires a constant supply of energy to do its job. Ongoing replenishment of protein and healthy fats are needed to build new cells and repair damaged ones. Prolonged, unregulated fasting or drastically reducing the number of calories you consume for a long period of time will lead to the death of fat cells, but it will also kill off muscle and organ cells as well.

The drugs in cigarettes are highly addictive and cause a host of negative health effects including lung cancer, heart problems

and stroke. Nicotine also works to suppress your appetite and reduce hunger. When you do eat, your body can’t absorb all the nutrients out of food and you’ll lose weight. Quit the habit and the pounds will quickly pile on - or that’s what you’ve heard.

This is incredibly false. If you’re willing to make lifestyle changes and eat healthily, you can obtain and maintain a healthy weight no matter what. Normally used to feed sick or injured people, some weight-loss fanatics are paying big bucks to undergo a medical procedure to have a feeding tube inserted up their nose and down to their stomach. For 10 days they eat nothing, while a

formula that’s rich in protein and low in carbs is delivered to their stomach. The total calories equal about 800 a day, well below recommended amounts.

Even worse than a feeding tube, some people are so desperate to lose weight they’re willing to have a plastic patch sewn to their tongue. The stitches are so painful they can’t eat solid foods and a liquid diet restricts calories to fewer than 1,000 a day.

Over-the-counter diet pills may offer small rewards by suppressing the appetite. Prescription weight-loss medication may have more of an effect by reducing absorption of nutrients or changing your brain’s view of food. But be

wary of diet pills sold online and advertised as ‘all natural’. Most of these pills contain amphetamine, a stimulant drug that prevents sleep and causes anxiety, nausea, irritability, and possibly heart problems and even death.

Another highly dangerous diet trend involves cotton balls. Dieters eat cotton balls soaked in water or juice to trick their stomach into thinking they’ve eaten something. Besides being a starvation technique, cotton balls aren’t meant to be eaten and can cause painful blockages that may burst, infecting your body with food and feces.

Extreme dieting leads to hair loss, weak immune system, loss

of muscle, loose skin, fatigue, insomnia, dry skin, anemia, brittle nails, irritability, and organ failure.

Quick weight loss is not worth the short- and possible longterm ill health effects. None of the disturbing diets listed above are healthy, nor do they provide long lasting weight loss. As soon as you can bear the pain no more, the weight creeps back on and your body continues to suffer.

Eat smart, exercise regularly, and never give dangerous fad diets a second thought. You can do it!

There’s a sucker born every single minute It’s been said that, “There’s a sucker born every minute.” I often think of this remark while watching TV medical commercials, the ones that promote drugs to treat common ailments, then show pictures of someone riding a horse, climbing a hill or hugging their partner.

JONES But then the commercial adds, “See your doctor if you notice a rash, skin sores, sudden pain, dizziness, abdominal bloating, fever, chills or coughing up blood. Drug X can be associated with changes in blood pressure, nausea, visual problems, numbness of legs, an increased risk of blood clots and cancer.” The list of hazards continues as long as your arm.

My question? Why would any human consider taking the risks of this medication unless they’re taking their final breath and have nothing to lose? But it’s obvious what has triggered this paranoia.

We are bombarded with health data by the media. There’s a staggering list of over-the-counter (OTC) pills and an expanding list

of prescription drugs. Hence, we are all warned we ignore this medication at our peril.

Madison Avenue learned it’s easy to seduce people when corporations have millions of dollars to spend and a perfect sales pitch.

It’s been said facetiously people have become so obsessed with health that if the U.S. Declaration of Independence were written today, it would declare the pursuit of health, rather than happiness, as the third inalienable right of Americans.

The result is that North Americans have been programmed for illness. Today, a well person is someone who hasn’t seen enough TV ads, been examined by enough doctors and had enough tests done.

Another problem is that nothing seems to be normal these days. For instance, a recent medical report says that even ‘normal’ blood pressure may be too high. And doctors are being told to reduce their patients’ cholesterol levels lower and lower. Sir William Osler, Professor of Medicine at McGill, Johns Hopkins and Oxford Universities was an astute commonsense doctor. He remarked, “One of the first duties of the physician is to educate the masses not to take medicines.”

Osler, if he were alive today, would point out that every year 100,000 North Americans die from

prescription drugs and another 700,000 are admitted to emergency due to their complications. I’m sure he would also stress that natural remedies have not produced dead bodies.

Voltaire, the French philosopher and writer, would also add sound advice. He had a risky habit of criticizing the government during the French revolution, and was tossed into the Bastille for it, not a five-star hotel. During that time he wrote, “The art of medicine is to amuse the patient while nature cures.” He also philosophized, “It’s dangerous to be right when the government is wrong!”

I’d like to end on an optimistic note. But in spite of such sage advice, history continues to show that a sucker is still born every minute. Every year huge amounts of minor painkillers are sold.

Some are effective but many are consumed because few people today will tolerate the slightest ache or pain. It means year after year 22,000 North Americans die from gastrointestinal bleeding due to minor painkillers.

Billions of dollars are spent every year ‘taming’ the stomach’s acid or stopping its production by proton-pump inhibitors such as Nexium, Prevacid and Prilosec.

But these drugs have been associated with pneumonia, life-threat-

‘AAA’ Braves battle Oil Giants in three game series

BY JENNA SWAN Red Deer Express The Red Deer Carstar ‘AAA’ Braves had an action-packed weekend on their home field at Great Chief Park. The last of their four games against the Fort McMurray Oil Giants saw a good battle between the two teams.

The Braves were off to a good start taking the first win of the three game series on Saturday afternoon in the first of the day’s double header held at 3 p.m. but fell short later in the day.

The third game on Sunday saw the Braves down by one in the bottom of the seventh with a score of 4-3 and the bases loaded. Unfortunately the Braves were unable to push a run across the plate to take the win.

New to the team this year – head coach Todd Labranche said Sunday’s game could have went better but considering a minor roster depletion due to injuries and other commitments he says the team is coming together nicely.

“We made some mental mistakes that allowed them to score a few runs and we weren’t able to come back,” said Labranche, who added starting pitcher Mike Ozga played well. “He threw an incredible game and kept us in it.”

He added one of the team’s core players - Kelsey Lalor was among those missing from the roster on Sunday’s game as she was away trying out for a national team in hopes of heading to the PanAm games in Toronto this summer.

“She’s a great ball player and fundamentally sound,” said Labranche of the team’s only female player who has started a number of games for the team as shortstop.

“She wasn’t just an add-on or a later addition – she was one of the core players for our team coming out of try outs.

“She hits high in the batting order which says a lot of her ability.”

With only three senior players on the team, and no utilization of the allowance to roster three over-age players – the Braves certainly have a road of building ahead of them according to the coach.

“A main focus for us as a coaching staff is getting our players up from that Bantam level of hitting to midget level hitting because the pitching is quite a bit faster,” said Labranche on his young team. “We need to go up there with a plan and ensure

we can hit with runners in scoring position and that’s something we’ve been preaching all season.”

He added the coaching staff, which consists of himself, his son Greg Labranche, Braves graduate from the 2014 season, Ty Elliot, as well as former Brave Willie Mulligan, have been drilling the players extensively to prepare for the season and practicing as much as possible in hopes of making it further than the team did last year. “We work hard in practice, our philosophy as a coaching staff is to ensure that practices are difficult so that games seem easy in comparison and become sec-

ond nature to them,” he explained of the out-of-game preparation. “Players on this team need to come prepared with not only the skill but the mindset also.

“We are really focusing on the thinking aspect to help take them to the next level, which includes a lot of situational hitting and situational defense so they know exactly what they need to be doing.”

He added a strong coaching staff will be fundamental if the team hopes to make it to Tier provincials at the end of the season – which he says is the goal for the team thus far.

“The players all respect their coaches’

individual abilities and each one of them brings something very different to the coaching staff,” he explained of his assistant coaches. “It allows the players to really learn a lot from people who played at those higher levels of baseball,” he said.

“Every single time we are stepping on that field whether it’s for a game or a practice – we are learning something new as a team and as individual athletes.”

Local roller derby league open to new members

It develops skills like teamwork, body and mind coordination, endurance and strength. It’s also a very relaxed, friendly atmosphere that Bentley resident Elizabeth ‘Mexi-

“I think the first thing I fell in love with was the welcoming. They are very welcoming, even if you don’t have the skills for the first few classes. You need time, like anything.

Sometimes, you have to tell your brain to turn around on one foot and go backwards, but your brain says, ‘No – I can’t do that’ so you have to push yourself to try.

There is a challenge for your brain and your body and getting them connected. I love that.”

Bolanos skates with the Nuclear Free Roller Derby team, which is a part of the Central Alberta Roller Derby Association (CARDA). She has been participating for a year and a half and said she thoroughly enjoys the sport.

Roller derby is a highimpact sport that is played with five members of a team on the track at each time, roller skating in the same direction and using strategies to help the designated scorer (jammer) complete laps around the other team for points.

Many people think roller derby is only for females, but there are male teams as well. CARDA has clubs for youth, men and women to play on.

“I’m not that young anymore, so to find a sport that has a team, is competitive, and has a lot of contact – it’s hard to find that. I tried roller derby once, and just fell in love so I keep doing it.”

Bolanos said prior to any real matches or scrimmages, it takes a lot of practice and time to get comfortable. She said safety is the number one concern of the club and they will not let players participate in matches until they are comfortable and feel safe.

“Most injuries happen because your muscles aren’t strong enough or because people aren’t really thinking about what they’re doing. But, if you play it safe and know when to stop, you should be fine.

Accidents do happen, and sometimes you jut get crushed. But you’re the one running your adrenaline, so you have to be smart,” she said.

Bolanos said the camaraderie and teamwork of the Nuclear Free Roller Derby team is extremely important. She said the team supports each other through good times and bad, and often, even opponents are friends after the match. She said teamwork is crucial and roller derby is not a selfish sport.

“There is a lot of teamwork. We are a team in the good times and in the bad times. When we win, that’s awesome, and when we lose we suck it up and do our best next time. If someone has a problem, we are there. I think it’s cool that you come here and you’re not a nurse, or a teacher – you’re a player

as part of a team. Everyone is there for you, and you are there for your team.

“There are also no hard feelings in roller derby. Your teammate might kick you or knock you out of bounds, but five minutes later you’re hugging. Sometimes when we’re playing against other

teams, it’s really competitive but you go to the after party and everyone is friends.”

RDC athletics director steps down After more than seven years of leading one of Canada’s most successful athletics departments, Keith Hansen will be stepping down as Athletics Director for Red Deer College to pursue his passion as a full time instructor at the college. Hansen’s time as RDC’s athletic director included accomplishments as both a coach and instructor, in which he led the Kings volleyball team for 12 seasons – in which he won nine Canadian College Athletic Association (CCAA) national championships.

Following his ninth win, Hansen stepped down as coach and into the role of athletic director. His time as the director saw him recognized as the CCAA Athletic Director of the Year for 2011-12 with RDC winning the CCAA Innovation Award in 2013-14 for the RDC captain’s council.

Hansen has been awarded the RDC Distinguished Alumnus award, been inducted into the Alberta Volleyball Hall of Fame as a coach, received the Province of Alberta Coaching Award, twice has been selected as the CCAA Coaching Excellence Award winner for all sports and has since won the City of Red Deer coach of the year two times as well.

The former Kings volleyball coach was also involved in many college initiatives over the years, and well respected within the larger community for his involvement in developing sport through other parts of Alberta and across Canada as a contributing member of a variety of committees and task forces. His volunteer work stretched from being a member of Volleyball Canada Domestic Development Committee, a task force member on the implementation of the Alberta Sport Plan, board member of Alberta Volleyball, executive member of the Alberta College’s Athletics Conference (ACAC), president of the Central Alberta Kings Volleyball Club as well as numerous other positions. “It is with great excitement and a little angst that I step down as Athletic Director of RDC,” said Hansen.

“The athletic program as RDC has been a major part of my life for 21 years – two as an athlete, 12 as a coach, seven as athletic director – so it is hard to step away from something that has given me so much enjoyment.

“That being said, I knew it was time to step away from coaching and move into administration and I now know it is time to step away from administration in full time aca- Swan demia.”

Simplifying your home can lead to helping others Life is about small acts of kindness, a coworker put a coffee in front me at the most opportune moment today and it nearly brought tears to my eyes.

WYSE My significant other took out my garbage, organized my recycling and organized my pots and pans drawer one day while I was at work and it meant so much to me. My dad offered to cut my grass last week and it turned into a lovely chance to visit and share some coffee and cookies.

Home is about sharing yourself and the blessings you have received but sometimes

I think we miss the little acts of kindness that can bring love to people in small ways everyday. I saw a little old lady pulling some cans out of my recycling box last week so now I want to make sure that there are some cans and bottles for her on top of the bin for her to take with her.

I have no idea where life will take this lady but it would make me happy to know that I took a few seconds of extra effort and possibly helped a little.

Often life gets very busy and we can easily overlook those around us who don’t live in beautiful homes and who don’t ever utter the sentence ‘my granite installation is SO stressful!’

I hope that when someone is right in front of us we will stop and be thankful for what we have and that we take one step towards that person and look at them as a human being and ask how we can help.

When I am sitting in my nicely appointed home with my beautiful leather furniture it is easy to forget that man I met a few weeks ago at a sub shop who couldn’t gather enough coins to buy a bowl of soup.

I could have left and jumped in my vehicle and drove away but I made myself stop and look at him and ask him what he needed. It turned out all he wanted was a bowl of soup.

Our homes are crowded beyond recognition with clutter which is both a physically and mentally unhealthy way to live. If you have rooms in your home that cannot be used for their intended function because of clutter then your house is woefully out of balance and probably a constant source of frustration.

Ask yourself what you can donate or put on Kijiji as ‘free to a good home’ I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the people

you help and the freedom you will personally experience.

We are blessed in this country of ours and I want everyone reading these words to stop for a second and choose one random act of kindness this week.

Whether its opening your beautifully designed home to a neighbour or keeping Ziploc bags filled with soap, toothbrushes and socks in your car to hand out to someone you encounter on the sidewalk outside your favorite coffee shop.

Let’s get outside our four walls, pocket the cell phone and take a look around our community. I thank you for reading my tidbits on design and colour and I hope that you will take one small action after reading this week – someone’s day may be depending on you.

Home Builders’ Awards a success This past Saturday night was one of the biggest evenings of the year for our Central Alberta home builders.

TURCOTTE Their association, the Canadian Home Builders Association - Central Alberta’s (CHBA-CA) Awards of Excellence in Housing Show attracted 553 guests from home builders, tradesman, suppliers and professional service businesses to support the annual event.

There were a lot winners this past Saturday night, but the big awards of the evening went to Platinum Homes for the Builder of the year for Small Volume, and Laebon Homes for Builder of the Year Large Volume. Small volume equals 25 homes or less, and large volume is for over 25.

This event is also a large fundraising opportunity for our charity, the Build and Golf a Kid to Cure. This charity supports children’s oncology research and also supports many local initiatives as well.

From one wheelbarrow full of lively spirits, valued at about $1,000 we raised over $18,000 thanks to the very generous members of the Association.

Most of the builders in attendance provided us with a donation along with many of the suppliers and trades companies as well. Quite exciting.

The CHBA-CA Awards banquet is one of the Association’s premiere events and it’s organized by Association volunteer members and sponsors that contribute thousands of dollars per year, and it’s always a pleasure to be involved and part of the Association. Thank you to all of the sponsors and volunteers that created the event once again.
